Abstract

Anomalous microwave emission (AME) is believed to be due to electric dipole radiation from small spinning dust grains. The aim of this paper is a statistical study of the basic properties of AME regions and the environment in which they emit. We used WMAP and Planck maps, combined with ancillary radio and IR data, to construct a sample of 98 candidate AME sources, assembling SEDs for each source using aperture photometry on 1°-smoothed maps from 0.408≠GHz up to 3000 GHz. Each spectrum is fitted with a simple model of free-free, synchrotron (where necessary), cosmic microwave background (CMB), thermal dust, and spinning dust components. We find that 42 of the 98 sources have significant (>5σ) excess emission at frequencies between 20 and 60 GHz. An analysis of the potential contribution of optically thick free-free emission from ultra-compact H ii regions, using IR colour criteria, reduces the significant AME sample to 27 regions. The spectrum of the AME is consistent with model spectra of spinning dust. Peak frequencies are in the range 20-35 GHz except for the California nebula (NGC 1499), which appears to have a high spinning dust peak frequency of (50 ± 17) GHz. The AME regions tend to be more spatially extended than regions with little or no AME. The AME intensity is strongly correlated with the sub-millimetre/IR flux densities and comparable to previous AME detections in the literature. AME emissivity, defined as the ratio of AME to dust optical depth, varies by an order of magnitude for the AME regions. The AME regions tend to be associated with cooler dust in the range 14-20 K and an average emissivity index, βd, of +1.8, while the non-AME regions are typically warmer, at 20-27 K. In agreement with previous studies, the AME emissivity appears to decrease with increasing column density. This supports the idea of AME originating from small grains that are known to be depleted in dense regions, probably due to coagulation onto larger grains. We also find a correlation between the AME emissivity (and to a lesser degree the spinning dust peak frequency) and the intensity of the interstellar radiation field, G0. Modelling of this trend suggests that both radiative and collisional excitation are important for the spinning dust emission. The most significant AME regions tend to have relatively less ionized gas (free-free emission), although this could be a selection effect. The infrared excess, a measure of the heating of dust associated with H ii regions, is typically >4 for AME sources, indicating that the dust is not primarily heated by hot OB stars. The AME regions are associated with known dark nebulae and have higher 12 μm/25 μm ratios. Abstract

The atom-bond connectivity index-abbreviated ABC-has proven to describe the heat of formation of alkanes with an accuracy comparable to that of high-level ab initio and DFT methods. Its physical interpretation in terms of quantum-theory, its generalization, and many of its mathematical properties have been reported. Here, a probabilistic interpretation of the generalized ABC index is provided. It indicates that the terms defining this index represent the probability of visiting a nearest neighbor edge from one side or the other of a given edge in a graph. This interpretation is general enough as to cover the case of polarizing bonds in a molecular context. We then introduce a matrix representation of these probabilities in the form of generalized ABC matrices. Using this representation we study some indices related to the eigenvalues of the ABC matrices, such as the ABC energy and the ABC Estrada index. 4. Bond-length distributions for ions bonded to oxygen: alkali and alkaline-earth metals.

Abstract

Bond-length distributions have been examined for 55 configurations of alkali-metal ions and 29 configurations of alkaline-earth-metal ions bonded to oxygen, for 4859 coordination polyhedra and 38 594 bond distances (alkali metals), and for 3038 coordination polyhedra and 24 487 bond distances (alkaline-earth metals). Bond lengths generally show a positively skewed Gaussian distribution that originates from the variation in Born repulsion and Coulomb attraction as a function of interatomic distance. The skewness and kurtosis of these distributions generally decrease with increasing coordination number of the central cation, a result of decreasing Born repulsion with increasing coordination number. We confirm the following minimum coordination numbers: [3]Li+, [3]Na+, [4]K+, [4]Rb+, [6]Cs+, [3]Be2+, [4]Mg2+, [6]Ca2+, [6]Sr2+ and [6]Ba2+, but note that some reported examples are the result of extensive dynamic and/or positional short-range disorder and are not ordered arrangements. Some distributions of bond lengths are distinctly multi-modal. This is commonly due to the occurrence of large numbers of structure refinements of a particular structure type in which a particular cation is always present, leading to an over-representation of a specific range of bond lengths. Outliers in the distributions of mean bond lengths are often associated with anomalous values of atomic displacement of the constituent cations and/or anions. For a sample of [6]Na+, the ratio Ueq(Na)/ Ueq(bonded anions) is partially correlated with ⟨[6]Na+-O2−⟩ ( R2 = 0.57), suggesting that the mean bond length is correlated with vibrational/displacement characteristics of the constituent ions for a fixed coordination number. Mean bond lengths also show a weak correlation with bond-length distortion from the mean value in general, although some coordination numbers show the widest variation in mean bond length for zero distortion, e.g. Li+ in [4]- and [6]-coordination, Na+ in [4]- and [6]-coordination. For alkali-metal and alkaline-earth-metal ions, there is a positive correlation between cation coordination number and the grand mean incident bond-valence sum at the central cation, the values varying from 0.84 v.u. for [5]K+ to 1.06 v.u. for [8]Li+, and from 1.76 v.u. for [7]Ba2+ to 2.10 v.u. for [12]Sr2+. Abstract

Spectral and luminescent properties of novel derivatives of 2,4,5-triphenylimidazole synthesized in this study have been investigated in different solvents. For solutions of azomethine-substituted hydroxytriphenylimidazole (I) and two structural isomers, hydroxy- meta-bisimidazoles III and IV differing in the position of the OH group, two luminescence bands due to the presence of two ground-state conformers are observed. The equilibrium between the two conformers depends on the structure of the molecule and the solvent. For solutions of III and IV in polar and nonpolar solvents and for I in nonpolar solvents, long-wave-length luminescence dominates from the conformer with possibility of intramolecular proton transfer in the excited state. For I in protic and highly polar solvents, short-wavelength luminescence is the main one; depending on the excitation wavelength, it is possible to detect weak long-wavelength (green) or more intense short-wavelength (blue) luminescence. We consider the application of instrumental variable techniques in a longitudinal clinical trial in paediatric HIV/AIDS, with a substantial degree of non-compliance to randomized treatment (Nelfinavir versus placebo) and with left censoring of the outcome variable (HIV RNA concentration). We consider in detail the assumptions and implications behind the inclusion and exclusion of interactions between randomized arm and baseline covariates in modelling actual treatment received, and between treatment and baseline covariates in modelling outcome. Dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, with blue absolute magnitudes typically fainter than M[sub B] = -16, are the most numerous type of galaxy in the nearby universe. Tremendous advances have been made over the past several years in delineating the properties of both Local Group satellite dE's and the large dE populations of nearby clusters. We review some of these advances, with particular attention to how well currently available data can constrain (a) models for the formation of dE's, (b) the physical anti evolutionary connections between different types of galaxies (nucleated and nonnucleated dE's, compact E's, irregulars, and blue compact dwarfs', that overlap in the same portion of the mass-spectrum of galaxies, (c) the contribution of dE's to the galaxy luminosity functions in clusters and the field, (d) the star-forming histories of dE's and their possible contribution to faint galaxy counts, and (e) the clustering properties of dE's. Lifetime-contract theory assigns a riskless discount rate for sponsor valuation of pension obligations, but does not address the appropriate discount rate for employee valuation of pension promises. This puts in question the use of a riskless discount rate assumption in many studies which analyze pension claim valuation by employees. This article presents a method for assessing the employees' discount rate for pension claims. The method involves formulating the beta-duration relationship for these claims and combining this relationship with the capital asset pricing model. Numerical illustrations indicate that even for default-free pension promises, the employees' discount rate includes a systematic risk premium which may be non-negligible for young employees, but diminishes rapidly as employees grow older. Kraft pulping is interpreted in chemical terms on the basis of results from extensive qualitative and quantitative model experiments. In essence, the behavior of lignin is explained as a competition between degradation reactions, mainly involving aryl ether cleavage with participation of neighboring groups, and condensation reactions, comprising conjugate addition of carbanions to quinone methide intermediates. The initial phase of technical delignification is tentatively ascribed to the cleavage of α- and β-aryl ether bonds in phenolic lignin units, whereas the cleavage of β-aryl ether bonds in non-phenolic lignin units is considered to be the rate-determining reaction of the bulk phase. The residual phase may possibly be attributed to the rupture of C-C linkages and to aryl ether cleavage without neighboring group participation. Experimental support for these correlations is provided. The interplay of the various lignin reactions, illustrated in a summarizing scheme, explains some known observations in kraft pulping. Attention is drawn to analogies between reactions involved in the degradation of carbohydrates and those reponsible for the degradation of lignin. From the chemical standpoint, therefore, the selectivity of delignification is due to differences in the reactivity of the wood polymers, rather than to differences in the mechanisms of the degradation reactions. Money, Banking, and the Economy: A Monetarist View presents a systematic'monetarist'approach to money, banking, and the economy. The monetarist approach is a blend of the pre-Keynesian quantity theory, the tradition represented by D. H. Robertson, and the modern monetarist school, represented by Milton Friedman and his followers. A systematic development of a model of nominal income, based upon the Cambridge equation and the loanable funds theory of interest, is presented. This model is applied to the business cycle; inflation and stagflation; balance of payments and foreign exchange rates; and monetary and fiscal policy theories. Comprised of 20 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the concept of money and its functions and how it contributes to economic instability. The discussion then turns to the new and old definitions of the things that serve as money, the structure and institutions of financial markets and financial instruments; banks, banking markets, and banking regulations; and the money supply process. Subsequent chapters explore the structure and functions of the Federal Reserve System; the problem of implementing monetary policy; the Clower-Leijonhufvud idea of Say's Principle; the quantity theory of money as described by the equation of exchange or the Cambridge equation; and the connection between money and business cycles.
