Abstract

This paper empirically approaches the phenomenon of cognitive pluralism and its manifestations in a typical formation of a novel system of diagramming arguments: networks. For this case, from a sociocultural perspective, we conducted focused interviews in which we analyzed the interpretations that students of Informal Logic (FFyH, UNC, Argentina) construed on the "bidirectional relations" of the network diagrams. These formations are presented as problematic inferential assumptions in which the students contradict themselves by indicating the direction of the inference between two given propositions. The results obtained show that: 1) the bidirectional relationships are conceptualized as typical formations in the diagrams with reticular structure that manifest the phenomenon known as cognitive pluralism, 2) the argument networks, exhibit and summarize inferential admissions that ascribe to both classic and modern conceptual construction theories, since the bidirectional relations of the network diagram are organized following both the principles of the concept of "class" and those of the concept of "series"; and 3) the modification of reading practices and analysis of diagrams of arguments when using networks gives a predominant place to the new sign system.
