Background and purpose: Aphthous and oral ulcers are the most common ulcerative conditions of the oral mucosa, presenting as painful sores on the oral or tongue mucous membranes that make eating and drinking difficult. Zataria multiflora Boiss. has demonstrated therapeutic potential and has been used in formulations such as Protact® mouthwash. Recent studies indicate that this plant possesses several therapeutic effects, including alleviating inflammation and promoting healing in oral, digestive, and skin wounds. Given the documented effectiveness of this plant in treating various types of oral wounds and inflammation, along with the availability of Protact® mouthwash in pharmacies nationwide, this study aims to evaluate patient and physician satisfaction with the efficacy of Protact® mouthwash for treating oral ulcers and aphthous ulcers in Sari and Babol, the two largest cities by population in Mazandaran province. Materials and methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included a sample of 75 individuals, consisting of 35 physicians and 40 patients from Sari and Babol who either prescribed or used Protact® mouthwash. A convenience sampling method was used, with participants selected based on their willingness to complete a checklist. Data were collected by trained interviewers visiting medical centers, physician clinics, and pharmacies, and inviting participants to complete the checklist. Data were presented as mean ± standard deviation (M ± SD), percentages, median, minimum, and maximum values. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-squared, Kolmogorov–Smirnov, and independent t-tests. Results: The majority of participants in both groups were men (patients: 52.5%, or 21 out of 40; physicians: 94.3%, or 33 out of 35). The mean, median, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum ages for physicians were 53.94, 56, 7.6, 40, and 68 years, respectively, while those for patients were 40.13, 42, 10.8, 18, and 63 years, respectively. Most patients in this study (75%) reported a high level of satisfaction after using Protact® mouthwash. This mouthwash was mainly used for the treatment of aphthous stomatitis and oral inflammation, with a frequency of 52.5%. Results from the physicians' checklists showed that Protact® mouthwash was most frequently prescribed by dentists (42.9%), followed by general practitioners, hematologists and oncologists, and radiologists (each with a frequency of 11.4%). Additionally, physicians expressed satisfaction with the healing progress in their patients. Conclusion: The findings support the effectiveness of Protact® mouthwash, a natural product produced in Iran, for the prevention and treatment of oral cavity-related conditions. The efficacy of this product is likely attributed to the presence of major phytochemicals in Zataria multiflora extract and essential oil, including thymol and carvacrol, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and tissueregenerative properties beneficial to mucosal and skin healing. Objective: The present study aimed to assess the impact of the aqueous-ethanolic extract of Zataria multiflora (ZM), carvacrol (Car), and their co-administration with a PPAR activator, pioglitazone (Pio), on oxidative stress and inflammation induced by paraquat (PQ) inhalation at a systemic level. Materials and Methods: The rats in the control group were exposed to saline and those of other groups to PQ (54 mg/m³) aerosols for 8 times on alternate days. Nine PQ groups were treated with saline, Car (20 and 80 mg/kg/day), ZM (200 and 800 mg/kg/day), Pio (5 mg/kg/day), dexamethasone (Dexa, 0.03 mg/kg/day), and low-dose ZM or Car + Pio for 16 days during the period of PQ exposure (n=6). Results: Differential and total WBC counts, and malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin (IL)-10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α levels were enhanced but catalase (CAT), thiol, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were reduced in the blood in the PQ group (p<0.01 to p<0.001). All measured variables improved in groups treated with both doses of ZM, Car, Pio, ZM + Pio, Car+Pio, and Dexa vs the PQ group (p<0.05 to p<0.001). Most variables were more improved in combined treatment groups in comparison with three agents alone. The combination of ZM or Car, and Pio showed an impact on PQ inhalation-induced systemic changes. Lakes play a vital role in water conservation, biodiversity, tourism and job creation. However, seasonal changes, inflow of sewage and erosion increase the amount of nutrients discharged into the lakes and affect the structure of the ecosystem and the diversity of its planktons through the reduction of water quality. The purpose of this study was to identify the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in Karon-4 lake to investigate the trophic indicators and water quality of this lake. For this purpose, after identifying 4 stations, sampling was done in 4 stages during 2017. Based on the results, 30 species of phytoplankton (belonging to 7 groups) and 58 species of zooplankton (belonging to 7 groups) were identified. The highest density of phytoplankton was observed in late summer and autumn, indicated the high values of soluble oxygen of the lake in these seasons beacause of increased photosynthetic activities. Most of the observed zooplankton species were also in the spring season and related to Copepoda, Rotifer and Cladocer. The average Shannon-Wiener and Margalf indices for phyto and zooplanktons indicated the improvement of living conditions and the possibility of the presence of more diverse species of zooplanktons due to the development of phytoplanktons in this lake. Therefore, in order to prevent algal bloom, in addition to controlling external factors (entry of various pollutants), attention should also be paid to internal conditions governing this dam. The life cycle of barnacles usually consists of two stages: the free-swimming larval stage and the stationary stage. Their larval stage has 6 stages. Considering that plant essential oils showed anti-algae properties in previous studies, in this study, the toxicity of this essential oil was investigated on different stages of barnacle larvae of A. amphitrite species. Because they should not have a negative effect on the food chain. Also, in order to evaluate the toxicity effects of Z. multiflora essential oil on barnacle larvae as a study model. This test was performed based on the determination of LC50 in a 24-hour period on different stages of barnacle larvae, in such a way that in 24-well plates of each stock, 6 concentrations of 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, 3.125, 1.5 µg/ml was prepared, then 1 ml of sea water and 10 barnacle larvae were added to each well and the number of dead and alive was checked by loupe. The obtained results showed that the LC50-14.198 µg/ml in the (VI ( stage of and the LC50-36.91 µg/ml in the) II( stage have a significant difference. Also, this plant essential oil showed a toxic effect on barnacle larvae at concentrations higher than 20 g/ml. But in general, the use of this herbal essential oil has significant biological activity due to having carvacrol as the main component of the essential oil. Also, by having different compounds such as phenolic, terpenoids and alkaloids, it can be a pioneer in the development of practical and bio-compatible with eco-management goals in low concentrations.

Abstract Background Zataria multiflora Boiss. is a medicinal and aromatic plant from the Lamiaceae family. It is extensively used in Iranian traditional medicine, mostly as a replacement for Thyme species. This study was focused on the analysis of chemical composition and the distribution and types of trichomes of Z. multiflora grown under different conditions. Equilibrium headspace analysis in combination with GC-FID-MS was used to identify volatile compounds released by aerial parts of Z. multiflora in development stages of 50 and 100% flowering under normal and drought-stress conditions. Results The main constituents were p-cymene (20.06–27.40%), γ-terpinene (12.44–16.93%), and α-pinene (6.91–16.58%) and thymol (8.52–9.99%). The highest content of p-cymene (27.40%) and thymol (9.99%) was observed in the 50% flowering stage at the 90% field capacity, while the maximum γ-terpinene (16.93%) content was recorded in the 100% flowering stage under normal conditions. Using the SEM method, it was found that peltate glandular and non-glandular trichomes are distributed on the surface of the leaf, stem, and outer side of the calyx. However, capitate trichomes only are detected on the stem and calyx in the 100% flowering and beginning of blooming stages, respectively. The type and structure of trichomes do not vary in different development stages, but they differ in density. The highest number of leaf peltate glandular trichomes was observed in the vegetative and beginning of blooming stages at 50% and 90% field capacity, respectively. Non-glandular trichomes of the stem were observed with high density in both normal and stress conditions, which are more densely in 90% field capacity. Conclusions Since this plant has strong potential to be used in the food and pharmacological industries, this study provides valuable information for its cultivation and harvesting at specific phenological stages, depending on desired compounds and their concentrations.

The current study aims to co‐encapsulate Shirazi thyme (Zataria multiflora) essential oil (ZEO) and nisin into chitosan nanogel as an antimicrobial and antioxidant agent to enhance the shelf‐life of cheese. Chitosan‐caffeic acid (CS‐CA) nanogel was produced to co‐encapsulate Zataria multiflora essential oil and nisin. This nanogel was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis, X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The effect of free (TFZN) and encapsulated ZEO‐nisin in chitosan nanogel (TCZN) on the chemical and microbiological properties of Iranian white cheese was assessed. The particle size, polydispersity index value (PDI), zeta potential, antioxidant activity, and encapsulation efficiency of the optimal chitosan‐ZEO‐nisin nanogel were 421.6 nm, 0.343, 34.0 mV, 71.06%–82.69%, and 41.3 ± 0.5%, 0.79 ± 0.06 mg/mL. respectively. FTIR and XRD approved ZEO and nisin entrapment within chitosan nanogel. The chitosan nanogel showed a highly porous surface with an irregular shape. The bioactive compounds of ZEO and nisin decreased the pH changes in cheese. On the 60th day of storage, the acidity of treated samples was significantly lower than that of control. Although the lowest anisidine index value was observed in samples treated with sodium nitrate (NaNO3) (TS), there was no significant difference between this sample and TCZN. The lowest microbial population was observed in TCZN and TS. After 60 days of ripening, Coliforms were not detected in the culture medium of TCZN and TS. Considering the growth period of saffron, intercropping it with species that have similar needs could be a favourable option for optimizing land use, provided that the allelopathic effects of saffron are taken into account. In order to investigate the allelopathic effect of saffron on quantitative and qualitative traits of some medicinal plants, an experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran. Treatments were a combination of 4 species (Thymus vulgaris, Zataria multiflora, Ziziphora clinopodioides and Teucrium polium and corm and leaf extracts in four levels (0, 3000, 6000, 9000 mg.kg-1 ) arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications. Measured parameters were the fresh and dry weight of root and shoot, shoot-to-root ratio, stomatal resistance, SPAD reading and essential oil percentage and yield. Results indicated that interaction of corm and leaf extract concentrations affected fresh weight of root and SPAD reading. Four species showed different trends in different extract concentrations. In Thymus vulgaris and Zataria multiflora, with increasing extract concentration, stomatal resistance initially increased and then decreased, but other species did not follow this trend. By increasing extract concentration, SPAD reading initially increased and then decreased. In all species studied, except Thymus vulgaris, an increase in extract concentration led to an increase in the shoot-to-root ratio. Additionally, as extract concentrations rose, the percentage of essential oil decreased. Overall, across all investigated species, the physiological and qualitative traits of the plants decreased with the use of saffron leaf and corm extracts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Aims Thymus plant is a very useful herbal medicine with various properties such as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Therefore, the properties of this plant have made this drug a suitable candidate for wound healing. In this study, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) gel containing Zataria multiflora volatile oil nanoemulsion (neZM) along with polycaprolactone/chitosan (PCL-CS) nanofibrous scaffold was used, and the effect of three experimental groups on the wound healing process was evaluated. The first group, HPMC gel containing neZM, the second group, PCL-CS nanofibers, and the third group, HPMC gel containing neZM and bandaged with PCL-CS nanofibers (PCL-CS/neZM). Wounds bandaged with common sterile gas were considered as control. Methods The nanoemulsion was synthesized by a spontaneous method and loaded into a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) gel. The DLS test investigated the size of these nanoemulsions. A PCL-CS nanofibrous scaffold was also synthesized by electrospinning method then SEM and contact angle tests investigated morphology and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of its surface. The animal study was performed on full-thickness skin wounds in rats, and the process of tissue regeneration in the experimental and control groups was evaluated by H&E and Masson's trichrome staining. Results The results showed that the nanoemulsion has a size of 225±9 nm and has an acceptable dispersion. The PCL-CS nanofibers synthesized by the electrospinning method also show non-beaded smooth fibers and due to the presence of chitosan with hydrophilic properties, have higher surface hydrophobicity than PCL fibers. The wound healing results show that the PCL-CS/neZM group significantly reduced the wound size compared to the other groups on the 7th, 14th, and 21st days. The histological results also show that the PCL-CS/neZM group could significantly reduce the parameters of edema, inflammation, and vascularity and increase the parameters of fibrosis, re-epithelialization, and collagen deposition compared to other groups on day 21. Conclusion The results of this study show that the PCL-CS/neZM treatment can effectively improve wound healing.

In this study, sequential electrospinning was employed to produce a multilayer film consisting of zein nanofibers (Z) and Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO) with different layers. The layers include: Z (without ZMEO), Z1 (one layer of Z + ZMEO), Z3 (three layers of Z + ZMEO), and Z5 (five layers of Z + ZMEO). Then, the effect of this antimicrobial packaging was investigated in relation to increasing the shelf life of strawberries at 4 °C for 12 days. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the fibers demonstrated a uniform and smooth structure without any beads. The use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that ZMEO was physically encapsulated into multilayer Z, resulting in an enhancement in thermal stability. The multilayer film showed a sustained release pattern of the encapsulated ZMEO for Z3, lasting for 90 h, and Z5, lasting for 180 h. This was in contrast to the rapid release within 50 h observed with Z film. The release kinetics for Z5 showed a good correlation with both the Higuchi and Korsmeyer–Peppas models, while for Z1 and Z3 films, Fickian diffusion was identified as the underlying mechanism. The findings of this study indicated that the multilayer film released ZMEO through a combination of diffusion and polymeric erosion. During a 12-day period of cold storage, strawberries that were treated with Z5 showed significant preservation of their anthocyanin (32.99%), antioxidant activity (25.04%), weight loss (24.46%), titratable acidity (11.47%), firmness (29.67%), and color (10.17%) compared to the control sample. The findings indicated that the sequential electrospinning technique used to create the multilayer nanofibrous film could be used in various fields, such as bioactive encapsulation, controlled release, antimicrobial packaging, and food preservation. Purpose: The increasing resistance to onychomycosis treatment globally is a major concern as it results in treatment failures. This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of incorporating nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) in a gel formulation for treating mild to moderate Candida-associated onychomycosis using Zataria multiflora (Zt) essential oils. Methods: The characteristics of Zataria multiflora-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (Zt-NLCs) were validated using a carbopol gel (1 % w/w). In vitro tests were conducted using CLSI M60 standards to evaluate the susceptibility of ten commonly encountered dermatophyte species to antifungal agents. A clinical study was conducted involving 40 volunteers randomly assigned to two groups: one receiving the Zt-NLCs gel and the other receiving a placebo, using a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. The objective was to assess clinical manifestations and mycological findings after topical application for 2 and 4 weeks. The causative agents' species were identified using a PCR-RFLP method. Results: The preparation of Zt-NLCs gel resulted in a uniform suspension of spherical nanoparticles with favourable characteristics and no cytotoxic effects. Nowadays if essential oils can remain stable in food processing conditions, they can be used as an alternative to synthetic preservatives in food products. In this research, in addition to investigating the compounds of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon essential oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the antimicrobial properties of two essential oils before and after heat treatment (200 °C; 10 min) against Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger were evaluated. Based on the obtained results, the thermal process did not significantly affect the main compounds of the essential oils. Cinnamaldehyde and eugenol were the main constituents of cinnamon essential oil, while phenolic compounds (thymol and carvacrol) made up 61.5% of Z. multiflora essential oil. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of Z. multiflora and cinnamon essential oils against Aspergillus niger were 250 and 4000 µL/mL, respectively, while the minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) were 250 and 16,000 µL/mL, respectively. Against Bucillus subtilis, the MIC and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) values were 7.8 and 15.6 µL/mL for Z. multiflora, and 16,000 and 32,000 µL/mL for cinnamon, respectively. The inhibition zones of heated Z. multiflora and cinnamon essential oils were 20.5 and 16.05 mm against A. niger and 29.00 and 17.00 mm against B. subtilis, respectively. In general, the results demonstrated that the thermal process did not significantly affect the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils, meaning that they are suitable for use as antimicrobial agents in products that undergo thermal processing.

Objective: Liver is an important player in regulation of body homeostasis. Study investigated the effects of hydro-alcohol extract of Zataria multiflora (ZM) on oxidative damage, level of IL-6 and enzymes of liver in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated rats.Materials and Methods: The rats were distributed into 5 groups: 1) Control; 2) LPS; and 3-5) ZM-Extract (Ext) 50, ZM-Ext 100, and ZM-Ext 200. ZM-Ext groups received 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of extract 30 min before LPS. Drugs were injected intraperitoneally. The entire period of this project was 17 days. In first three days, only extract was injected and then, ZM was injected along with LPS.Results: LPS increased the level of ALT (Alanine aminotransferase), AST (Aspartate aminotransferase ), ALK-P (Alkaline Phosphatase), IL-6, malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO) metabolites and lowered thiol, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) concentration. ZM extract not only reduced ALT, AST, ALK-P, IL-6, MDA, and NO metabolites concentrations but also increased thiol content, and SOD and CAT levels.Conclusion: Extract of ZM prevented LPS-induced hepatotoxicity. This protective effect was associated with reduction in inflammation and oxidative stress.

Global threat resulting in heavy metal contamination of medicinal plants is considered a serious concern. The quantitative evaluation of four heavy metals, lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu), was investigated frequently sold medicinal plants in the markets of Iran. Two medicinal plants, Mentha piperita L., and Zataria multiflora Boiss. were selected from six different herbalists of six districts of Shiraz, Iran. The dissolution of the sample was performed by a conventional wet acid digestion method, and heavy metal levels were determined using Polarograph. Statistical Analysis was used by SPSS.21. According to the achieved results in M.piperita the levels of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu were in the range of 2.66 ± 0.76 mg/kg, 0.017 ± 0.009 mg/kg, 0.092 ± 0.069 mg/kg, and 0.237 ± 0.080 mg/kg, respectively. The concentrations of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu in Z. multiflora samples were 1.46 ± 0.74 mg/kg, 0.019 ± 0.004 mg/kg, 0.11 ± 0.05 mg/kg, and 0.41 ± 0.17 mg/kg, respectively. There was a correlation between Zn with Cu in our finding (r = 0.9). Based on these results, we found that the concentration of heavy metals in these two medicinal plants was not more than the standard concentration reported for similar plants. It appears that these plants are generally safe in usual doses. The finding of this study can be used to determine standard heavy metals limits in M.piperita and Z.multiflora in future studies. Nowadays if essential oils can remain stable in food processing conditions, they can be used as an alternative to synthetic preservatives in food products . In this research, in addition to investigating the compounds of Zataria multiflora and cinnamon essential oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the antimicrobial properties of two essential oils before and after heat treatment (200 °C; 10 min) against Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger were evaluated. Based on the obtained results, the thermal process did not significantly affect the main compounds of the essential oils. Cinnamaldehyde and eugenol were the main constituents of cinnamon essential oil, while phenolic compounds (thymol and carvacrol) made up 61.5% of Z. multiflora essential oil. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of Z. multiflora and cinnamon essential oils against Aspergillus niger were 250 and 4000 µL/mL, respectively, while the minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) were 250 and 16,000 µL/mL, respectively. Against Bucillus subtilis, the MIC and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) values were 7.8 and 15.6 µL/mL for Z. multiflora, and 16,000 and 32,000 µL/mL for cinnamon, respectively. The inhibition zones of heated Z. multiflora and cinnamon essential oils were 20.5 and 16.05 mm against A. niger and 29.00 and 17.00 mm against B. subtilis, respectively. Zataria multiflora Boiss is a perennial plant with a wide spectrum of biological and pharmacological activities including antidiabetic, antinociceptive, anti-asthmatic, anti-fever, anti-spastic, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. This paper reviews the therapeutic effects of Zataria multiflora based on recent reports. The relevant reports were extracted by checking the electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar from the beginning of 2010 until the end of May 2023. The neuroprotective effects of Zataria multiflora can be attributed to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, enhancement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and alleviation of brain oxidative damage. Zataria multiflora also exerts its protective effects on the respiratory system, liver, and kidney by reducing the level of inflammatory cytokines, scavenging the free radicals, and augmenting the antioxidant enzymes. Additionally, Zataria multiflora accelerates wound healing via upregulating transforming growth factor-β, insulin-like growth factor 1, fibroblast growth factor 2, and vascular endothelial growth factor, and inducing angiogenesis and collagen biosynthesis. Objective: Liver is an important player in regulation of body homeostasis. Study investigated the effects of hydro-alcohol extract of Zataria multiflora (ZM) on oxidative damage, level of IL-6 and enzymes of liver in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated rats. Materials and Methods: The rats were distributed into 5 groups: 1) Control; 2) LPS; and 3-5) ZM-Extract (Ext) 50, ZM-Ext 100, and ZM-Ext 200. ZM-Ext groups received 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of extract 30 min before LPS. Drugs were injected intraperitoneally. The entire period of this project was 17 days. In first three days, only extract was injected and then, ZM was injected along with LPS. Results: LPS increased the level of ALT (Alanine aminotransferase), AST (Aspartate aminotransferase ), ALK-P (Alkaline Phosphatase), IL-6, malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO) metabolites and lowered thiol, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) concentration. ZM extract not only reduced ALT, AST, ALK-P, IL-6, MDA, and NO metabolites concentrations but also increased thiol content, and SOD and CAT levels. Postharvest fruit rot is a major problem in strawberry production chain worldwide. Aspergillus sp. is one of the major fungi associated with fruit rot of strawberry. In this study, an Aspergillus flavus was isolated from a rotten strawberry fruit. Based on the nucleotide sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer regions of rDNA, the fungus was confirmed as A. flavus. Pathogenicity of the isolated fungus was confirmed by artificially inoculating strawberry fruits under laboratory conditions. This strain was capable of producing aflatoxin B1 in vitro as determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Postharvest dip treatment of mature strawberry fruits with Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZEO) (0.1%) completely suppressed A. flavus infection and prevented rotting of fruits. The results of this study suggest that ZEO can be used as a sustainable and safe alternative to chemical fungicides for the control of Aspergillus fruit rot of strawberry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adipose tissue-derived factors such as ANGPTL8 and adhesive molecules play an important role in exerting the pathological effects of obesity. This study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of resistance-endurance exercise training combined with Zataria multiflora ingestion on the levels of ANGPTL8, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 in sedentary overweight and obese men. Methods: In this clinical trial study, 40 sedentary overweight and obese men (with an average body mass index of 28.41±1.75 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to four groups with 10 subjects each. The groups included placebo, Zataria multiflora, training, and training + Zataria multiflora. The exercise training was combined training consisting of resistance-endurance exercise, conducted three times per week over eight weeks. Zataria multiflora supplement consumption was set at 500 mg daily. Blood sampling was conducted before and after the eight-week intervention, and the levels of ANGPTL8, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 were measured using the ELISA method. In this study, sequential electrospinning was employed to produce a multilayer film consisting of zein nanofibers (Z) and Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO) with different layers. The layers include: Z (without ZMEO), Z1 (one layer of Z + ZMEO), Z3 (three layers of Z + ZMEO), and Z5 (five layers of Z + ZMEO). Then, the effect of this antimicrobial packaging was investigated in relation to increasing the shelf life of strawberries at 4 °C for 12 days. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the fibers demonstrated a uniform and smooth structure without any beads. The use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that ZMEO was physically encapsulated into multilayer Z, resulting in an enhancement in thermal stability. The multilayer film showed a sustained release pattern of the encapsulated ZMEO for Z3, lasting for 90 h, and Z5, lasting for 180 h. This was in contrast to the rapid release within 50 h observed with Z film. The release kinetics for Z5 showed a good correlation with both the Higuchi and Korsmeyer–Peppas models, while for Z1 and Z3 films, Fickian diffusion was identified as the underlying mechanism. The findings of this study indicated that the multilayer film released ZMEO through a combination of diffusion and polymeric erosion. During a 12-day period of cold storage, strawberries that were treated with Z5 showed significant preservation of their anthocyanin (32.99%), antioxidant activity (25.04%), weight loss (24.46%), titratable acidity (11.47%), firmness (29.67%), and color (10.17%) compared to the control sample. The findings indicated that the sequential electrospinning technique used to create the multilayer nanofibrous film could be used in various fields, such as bioactive encapsulation, controlled release, antimicrobial packaging, and food preservation.

To achieve a suitable alternative for high-risk chemicals, the antifungal effects of zinc oxide (ZnO) and ZnO-ZmEO (Zataria multiflora essential oil loaded on ZnO) were investigated against six isolates of Fusarium as a destructive phytopathogenic fungus. The results showed that ZnO-ZmEO had a fungistatic effect against all isolates except F. oxysporum f.sp. lentis, and fungicidal activity against F. graminearum. The mycelial growth inhibitory of ZnO-ZmEO was increased by 42.70% compared to the ZnO and by 66.33% compared to pure essential oil. The effects of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) coating incorporated with Shirazi thyme (Zataria multiflora) oil nano emulsion (SNE), in different concentrations (10, 20, and 30 mg/ml), on the melanosis and the quality of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) was investigated during 10 days in refrigerated temperature (4 ± 0.5 °C). The results showed that incorporating SNE into CMC could significantly (P < 0.05) improve the microbial and lipid oxidation quality of the shrimp. During storage, the incremewnt of total volatile basic-nitrogen and trimethylamine in the SNEs-treated groups were lower than that of the other groups (P < 0.05). Also, the application of SNEs improved the textural, melanosis, and sensory acceptability of the coated shrimps. However, treating the shrimp with SNE in 30 mg/ml concentration caused an increase in the a* and b* values of samples and a decrease in the acceptability of this group. Hence, the SNE incorporation at lower concentrations (10, 20 mg/ml) into CMC coating could be useful in extending the shelf life of the shrimp during refrigerated storage and could be a substitute for sodium metabisulphite. Abstract Dental caries and oral infections have become a widespread issue in the modern world. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial, antifungal, and cytotoxicity characteristics of the extracts of Echinacea purpura, Arctium lappa, and the essential oil of Zataria multiflora as a potential herbal mouthwash. The essential oil of Z. multiflora leaves and the extracts of E. purpurea and A. lappa roots were prepared. The characterization was carried out by GC-MS and also, total phenol and flavonoid were assed for all three samples. The antimicrobial and anti-biofilm effects were evaluated against Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus salivarius, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The cytotoxic effect of the samples was evaluated on HEK 293 and HDFa cells by MTT test. Thymol and carvacrol contents in EO of Z. multiflora were measured at 31% and 42.2%, respectively. A. lappa had the lowest total phenolic and flavonoid value among the samples. On the other hand, the total phenolic content of Z. multiflora and the total flavonoid content of E. purpurea were the highest. The MIC values of Zataria, Arctium, and Echinacea against S. mutans were 0.011% v/v, 187.5 mg/ml, and 93.75 mg/ml, while MBC were 0.011% v/v, 375 mg/ml, and 187.5 mg/ml, respectively. The formulation showed bactericidal activity against S. mutans in the concentration of 5.86 mg/ml for Echinacea and Burdock extracts and 0.08 µl/ml for EO of Zataria. The formulation significantly affected microbial biofilm formation and induced biofilm degradation. The cell viability percentages were higher than 50% during 24 and 48 h. The formulation had a significant antimicrobial effect on cariogenic bacteria and C. albicans, with the lowest cytotoxic effects. Therefore, this formulation can be an appropriate candidate for mouthwash.

Abstract Background Allergic rhinitis is a widespread disorder across the globe. The Shirazi thyme (Zataria multiflora) has been shown to have considerable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study assessed the effect of this herbal product on alterations in inflammatory/anti-inflammatory cytokines. Method This study was conducted on the bank sample before and after the intervention to measure interleukin-4, interleukin-5, and interferon -γ levels with the ELISA test method in a supernatant taken from the PBMC cell culture from 30 allergic rhinitis patients. Results The IL-4 level had no significant difference between the two groups before the treatment. However, it had a significant increase in the case group after the treatment. The IL-5 level was significantly higher in the case group before the treatment. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences between the case and control groups after the treatment. Similarly, no significant differences were observed between the two groups considering IFN-γ before and after the treatment. Conclusion Consuming thyme with an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 and a decrease in IL-5 cytokine control inflammation and improvement in allergic rhinitis symptoms. Purpose: The wound healing process involves a complex series of biological events. Skin grafts have several uses as a reconstructive method. There are several dressings for the skin graft donor site, but the optimum dressing agents that provide all the requirements at the same time are unclear. This prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of Zataria multiflora cream in the wound healing process of partial-thickness skin graft donor sites and compared it with a placebo. Materials and Methods: This clinical trial study was performed on patients who underwent split-thickness skin grafts. Enrolled patients applied Z. multiflora cream and placebo controlled (petrolatum ointment) twice a day, from the day of intervention at the skin graft donor sites in two parts, separately. On 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after surgery, the wound healing process was evaluated, photographed, and scored according to the Bates-Jensen assessment tool. Evidence of infection was evaluated. The main agent and placebo were compared during the wound healing process. Results: Decreases in wound surface area and total score were significantly greater in the Z. multiflora group (p < 0.05). The wounds of 30% of patients in the second week and 90% of patients in the third week were completely epithelialized in the Z. multiflora group. These values were 3.3% and 36.7% for the control group, respectively, and so, the healing rate was ∼9-fold in the second week and 2.45-fold in the third week in the Z. multiflora group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Wound healing and reepithelialization accelerated significantly in the first, second, third, and fourth week after intervention in the Z. multiflora treatment group, due to modulating the inflammatory phase and improving the proliferative phase. Background and purpose: Candida infections have increased significantly in the antimicrobial resistance era, and synthetic antifungal drugs have limitations. The present work aimed to review the antifungal properties of Zataria multiflora (Z. multiflora) as an herbal remedy. Method: PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, SID, Civilica, and Magiran databases were searched for the antifungal activity on in vitro, in vivo, dental biofilm, and clinical studies of Z. multiflora on Candida species. Results: Overall, 33 articles evaluated the effect of Z. multiflora on Candida species and classified them into four groups, as follows in vitro (23), dental biofilm (6), in vivo (2), and clinical studies (3). All studies considered Z. multiflora effective in reducing or even inhibiting the growth of Candida species. NoMFC significant differences were seen in the effect of Z. multiflora on susceptible Candida compared to the resistant groups of Candida in the studies. It was also influential in inhibiting C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. kefyer, and C. zeylanoides. Conclusion: Considering the side effects and resistance of current antifungal drugs as well as the benefits of using herbal medicines, such as lower cost, less likely to develop drug resistance, the absence of side effects, and toxicity compared with chemical ones, it is possible as a powerful alternative to replace or combine with the current antifungal for Candida infection therapy along with other therapies. Introduction and Aim: Dental caries is the most common and chronic disease of the oral cavity worldwide. Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli are the most important etiological agent of dental caries. The aim of the present study was to compare the antimicrobial effect of Zataria multiflora essence with chlorhexidine (CHX) on the growth of streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus). Material and Method: In this in vitro study, the standard strains of S. mutans (PTCC = 1683) and L. acidophilus (PTCC: 1643) were obtained as lyophilized ampoules. Zataria multiflora essence was extracted using the Clevenger apparatus. Serial dilutions of 0.2% CHX and Zataria multiflora essence were prepared. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of CHX and essence of Zataria multiflora were determined using the modified Epsilometer test. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test and SPSS version 18. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The MIC levels of 0.2%CHX and Zataria multiflora for S. mutans and L. acidophilus were (0.00125,0.01) and (0.005,0.04) mg/ml, respectively. The antibacterial activity of CHX (0.2%) was more than Zataria multiflora essence. The antibacterial activity of 0.2% CHX and Zataria multiflora against S. mutans was more than L. acidophilus. The study investigates the antibacterial potential of hydroalcoholic extracts from Rosmarinus officinalis and Zataria multiflora , combined with ciprofloxacin, against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Initial screening showed promising results, leading to further exploration of the synergistic effect of the extracts and ciprofloxacin. The combination of the two extracts had an additive effect, while the combination of each extract with ciprofloxacin resulted in partial synergism. The most significant synergistic effect was observed against MRSA 9, with a 3200-fold reduction in the MIC value of ciprofloxacin. The similar inhibitory concentration of the extracts for all MRSA strains suggests these non-antibiotic agents have a broad spectrum of activity against MRSA. This offers a promising avenue for developing new therapeutic approaches to tackle drug-resistant bacterial infections. The results highlight the potential of combining R. officinalis and Z. multiflora extracts with ciprofloxacin to enhance antibacterial efficacy against MRSA strains.

Thymus species have found remarkable importance in food and medicine industries. The present study investigates the potential effect of Ag nanoparticle elicitors on proliferation of callus, and production of carvacrol and thymol in Zataria multiflora and three Thymus species. Firstly, callus was induced on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 2 mg l−1 of 2, 4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and 1 mg l−1 of kinetin (Kin)). Secondly, the effects of two different concentrations of Ag nanoparticles (4 and 8 mg l-1) were studied on callus growth and its secondary metabolites production. Results elucidated that after elicitation by 8 mg l-1 ofAg NPs, significantly the highest callus growth rate (CGR) (0.02 mm day-1), callus fresh mass (CFM) (0.99 g), and carvacrol (0.68 mg l-1) and thymol (11.09 mg l-1) content was achieved. Comparing different Thymus species, notably the greatest carvacrol and thymol amount was obtained in .kotschyanus Boiss. & Hohen. and T. Daenesis Čelak. at 8 mg l-1 concentration ofAg NPs. Hence, it is evident that the stimulation by NPs is dose-dependent. This study has potential to be commercially applied for the enhancement of pharmaceutical compounds in different species of Thymus.

Zataria multiflora is an important medicinal plant with antioxidant and anticancer properties attributed to its phytochemicals. To develop a method for bulk production of valuable phytochemicals, cell suspension culture of Z. multiflora were grown in liquid B5 medium and then treated in their log growth phase with chitosan (0, 10, 20, and 40 mg L−1) and yeast extract (0, 400, 800, and 1200 mg L−1) for 3 days. The levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and the main terpenoids and phenylpropanoids in the cell extracts were determined by HPLC and spectrophotometric techniques. The H2O2 and MDA levels significantly increased in the cells treated with both yeast extract and chitosan, while the NO level increased in those exposed to yeast extract. At their highest concentrations, both elicitors significantly increased PAL and TAL activities, as well as phenolic acids and flavonoids contents. Chitosan only induced the production of caffeic acid (22 µg g−1 DW), benzoic acid (2 µg g−1 DW), 4-hydroxy benzoic acid (6 µg g−1 DW), epicatechin (63 µg g−1 DW), and apigenin (5 µg g−1 DW) in the cells, while yeast extract increased the contents of phenylpropanoids gallic acid (50 µg g−1 DW), vanillin (35 µg g−1 DW), salicylic acid (24 µg g−1 DW), catechin (130 µg g−1 DW) and terpenoids carvacrol (7 µg g−1 DW) and thymol (24 µg g−1 DW). In this study, the inhibitory effects of Zataria multiflora, Nepeta haussknechtii, Artemisia sieberi, and Citrus aurantifolia EOs in pure and Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanocapsulated formulations were evaluated on the mycelial growth of Alternaria solani to find a suitable alternative for synthetic chemicals. The crystal structure and morphological properties of the fabricated nanomaterials were assessed via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. The textural features of the prepared nanoparticles were investigated with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and the presence of elements in the samples was studied with energy- dispersive X-ray (EDX) technique. The mycelial growth inhibitory (MGI) was performed in the laboratory by mixing with potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium at concentrations of 100, 300, 600, 1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 ppm. Based on the results, major differences were monitored between different concentrations. At the highest studied concentration, the inhibition of Z. multiflora EO was 100%, which was 43.20, 42.37, and 21.19% for N. haussknechtii, A. sieberi, and C. aurantifolia, respectively, and the inhibition of their nanocapsules was 100, 51.32, 55.23, and 26.58%, respectively. In the greenhouse study, Z. multiflora EO and its nanocapsule (ZnO-ZmEO) were compared with the ZnO and chlorothalonil fungicide based on the highest inhibitory of Z. multiflora in vitro. The highest antifungal effect was related to the ZnO-ZmEO by 53.33%. Therefore, the ZnO-ZmEO formulation can be recommended as a biofungicide for managing and controlling tomato early blight disease after further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wet bubble disease (WBD) caused by Hypomyces perniciosus is a major constraint of button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) cultivated worldwide. A few synthetic chemical fungicides are used to control WBD. In our study, the potential of essential oil (EO) from Zataria multiflora in inhibition of H. perniciosus was evaluated as an alternative to chemical fungicides. An isolate of H. perniciosus was isolated from wet bubble diseased A. bisporus and pathogenicity of the mycoparasite was determined under artificially inoculated conditions. The mycoparasitic fungus was identified using sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA. The EO was extracted from the aerial parts of Z. multiflora by microwave extraction method and evaluated in vitro for its antifungal activity against H. perniciosus. The EO of Z. multiflora (ZEO) at the tested concentrations (50% and 100%) inhibited the growth of H. perniciosus in the agar diffusion test. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ZEO was 0.04% as assessed by the poisoned food technique. The chemical composition of ZEO was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. A total of 23 compounds were identified. Among them, the most abundant compounds were Linalool (20.3%) and Bornyl acetate (15.5%). Linalool at the tested concentrations of 0.25% and 0.125% completely inhibited the mycelial growth of H. perniciosus in an in vitro assay. Introduction: The anti-inflammatory effects of exercise training and zataria multiflora have been proven. In the present study, researcher investigated the effect of eight weeks combined exercise training and Zataria multiflora (Z. multiflora) supplement on the levels of IL-1β and insulin resistance in overweight and obese men. Materials and Methods: The 40 overweight and obese men with average age of 27.73 ± 2.15 years old and average body mass index (BMI) 28.41 ± 1.75 kg/m² were randomly divided into four groups including the placebo, Z. multiflora, combined training, and training + Z. multiflora. Combined exercise training program conducted for eight weeks and three sessions per week. Z. multiflora supplement was also consumed at 500 mg daily. Blood sampling was performed before and 48 hours after the eight weeks intervention. The levels of IL-1β and insulin were measured by ELISA method. Data were analyzed by analysis of covariance and Bonferroni post hoc test. Results: The levels of IL-1β in training and training + Z. multiflora groups significantly decreased compared to placebo and Z. multiflora groups (P < 0.001). In addition, significant decrease of insulin resistance in training group compared to placebo (P < 0.001) and Z. multiflora (P = 0.003) groups, and also in training + Z. multiflora group compared to placebo and Z. multiflora groups were observed (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Combined training alone or in combination with Z. multiflora supplementation can exert anti-inflammatory effects. Kebab Koobideh ranks among the most popular in Iran, Turkey, and other countries. This product is prepared by mixing minced meat, onion, and various spices. The objective of our study was to examine the influence of Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO), fat, and saffron infusion as independent variables on the formation of four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH4) and sensory attributes of Kebab Koobideh. The findings indicated that all independent variables exerted a significant impact on the formation of ∑PAH4. Zataria multiflora essential oil was observed to exert an inhibitory effect on the production of ∑PAH4. The saffron infusion demonstrated a reduction in impact at lower concentrations, while increased effectiveness was observed at higher concentrations. Additionally, a sample meeting the desired specifications, containing 18.5 % fat, 0.008 % saffron infusion, and 0.02 % ZMEO, was prepared with consideration of two dependent responses. The desirability of this sample was quantified at 0.72. The sample contained 2.20 ng g−1 of ∑PAH4 and was rated as acceptable by sensory analysis, with a score of 84.60 out of 100. All samples exhibited a margin of exposure (MOE) exceeding 100,000, indicating that there is minimal cause for concern. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for the samples with 10 % fat, 0.05 % saffron infusion, and 0.02 % ZMEO, as well as for the sample with 10 % fat, 0 % saffron infusion, and 0.01 % ZMEO, was found to be negligible. The assessment of overall quality is contingent upon the evaluation of fat content. In conclusion, the integration of effective variables can result in a sample that exhibits satisfactory organoleptic characteristics while simultaneously reducing the concentration of PAHs. • The ZMEO at all levels and Saffron infusion at a low amount reduce ∑PAH4. • The highest inhibition rate was 87.36 %, and all samples had MOE˃100000. • The ZMEO does not have adverse effects on organoleptic properties. This experiment was conducted to study the effect of thyme extracts from Zataria multiflora and Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam on some productive traits and blood parameters. A total of 240 one-day-old, male broilers of Ross 308 were used in a completely randomized design with 6 experimental groups and 4 replicates with 10 birds in each. Experimental treatments consisted of a basal soybean-meal diet (control), the basal diet supplemented with vitamin E at 200 mg/kg, Zataria multiflora essential oil at 200 mg/kg or 400 mg/kg, and Ziziphora clinopodioides essential oil at 200 mg/kg or 400 mg/kg. The results showed that the birds in the experimental groups consumed more feed and had significantly greater body weight as well as energy and protein efficiency in the whole experimental period, especially Ziziphora clinopodioides at the level of 400 mg/kg, compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Thyme extracts had a significant effect on the most blood factors, except cholesterol and LDL-c (P < 0.05). Thyme extracts significantly reduced serum albumin and improved HDL-c level (P < 0.05). The experimental groups had a significant effect on the relative weight of breast and thigh, malondialdehyde concentration, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme activity (P < 0.05). Based on the results, Ziziphora clinopodioides at the level of 400 mg/kg can be introduced as an effective oral additive to improve the studied traits.

Abstract Background Novel and more efficient compounds are urgently required for medical treatment of cystic echinococcosis (CE). Germinative cell culture of Echinococcus granulosus could be used for anti-echinococcosis agent tests and other biological studies on CE. This study was performed to establish an in vitro cell culture model for E. granulosus germinative cells and to evaluate the lethal effect of Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMEO) on the cultured cells. Methods The inner surface of germinal layers of CE cysts was scraped, and the obtained materials were trypsinized to obtain a suspension of single germinative cells. Medium 199 was used as the basic culture medium and was supplemented with fetal bovine serum, 2-mercaptoethanol, l-cysteine, l-glutamine, glucose, sodium pyruvate, hydatid fluid, amphotericin B and antibiotics. The cells were cultured at a concentration of 104 cells/ml of culture medium and incubated at 37 °C. The culture medium was replaced every 7 days. Chemical composition of ZMEO was identified by GC-MS analysis. ZMEO was tested at concentrations of 0.5–8 mg/ml. Viability of the cells was assessed by trypan blue exclusion assay. Results A significant increase in the cell number was evident at 20, 30 and 45 days after cultivation. At 45 days of cultivation, the number of cells was approximately five-fold higher than on the first day. In GC-MC analysis, carvacrol, p-cymene, g-terpinene and thymol were found to be the main compounds of ZMEO. The lethal effect of ZMEO on the germinative cells at concentrations of 6, 7 and 8 mg/ml was 100% after 60, 25 and 7 min of exposure, respectively. Conclusions At 45 days of cultivation, the cell concentration was suitable for the desired in vitro experiments. A high lethal effect of ZMEO on the germinative cells of E. granulosus may be considered an opportunity for the introduction of a novel, more effective and safer therapeutic agent for treatment of CE using an herbal product. The current study aimed to assess the chemical, microbial, and sensory properties of Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs) in chicken fillets stored at 4 ± 1 °C for 12 days. As a result, the optimized ZEO-SLNS sample exhibited a spherical morphology with a droplet size of 251.51 ± 1.11 nm and a PDI of 0.34 ± 0.01 under transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The encapsulation efficiency (EE) and zeta potential were approximately 55.4 % and −20.87 ± 1.39 mV, respectively. Furthermore, encapsulating ZEO in SLNS enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant activity compared to pure ZEO. As a result, the application of alginate-loaded ZEO-SLNS extended the storage time of fresh chicken fillets. Thus, the application of this edible coating showcased a remarkable ability to substantially decelerate both microbial and chemical changes in chicken fillets during cold storage conditions. Dental caries and oral infections have become a widespread issue in the modern world. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial, antifungal, and cytotoxicity characteristics of the extracts of Echinacea purpura, Arctium lappa, and the essential oil of Zataria multiflora as a potential herbal mouthwash. The essential oil of Z. multiflora leaves and the extracts of E. purpurea and A. lappa roots were prepared. The characterization was carried out by GC-MS and also, total phenol and flavonoid were assed for all three samples. The antimicrobial and anti-biofilm effects were evaluated against Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus salivarius, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The cytotoxic effect of the samples was evaluated on HEK 293 and HDFa cells by MTT test. Thymol and carvacrol contents in EO of Z. multiflora were measured at 31% and 42.2%, respectively. A. lappa had the lowest total phenolic and flavonoid value among the samples. On the other hand, the total phenolic content of Z. multiflora and the total flavonoid content of E. purpurea were the highest. The MIC values of Zataria, Arctium, and Echinacea against S. mutans were 0.011% v/v, 187.5 mg/ml, and 93.75 mg/ml, while MBC were 0.011% v/v, 375 mg/ml, and 187.5 mg/ml, respectively. The formulation showed bactericidal activity against S. mutans in the concentration of 5.86 mg/ml for Echinacea and Burdock extracts and 0.08 µl/ml for EO of Zataria. The formulation significantly affected microbial biofilm formation and induced biofilm degradation. The cell viability percentages were higher than 50% during 24 and 48 h. The formulation had a significant antimicrobial effect on cariogenic bacteria and C. albicans, with the lowest cytotoxic effects. This study aimed to compare the antimicrobial effect of Deconex Surface, a common disinfectant, and Zataria multiflora essence on microbial load of Emergency ambulance equipment in Iran. The samples were selected from all the ambulances through convenience sampling. Before the intervention, the cultures were obtained from the contact surfaces and the surfaces were then disinfected with Deconex and Zataria multiflora. Then, repeated cultures were obtained from the same surfaces. Next, the samples were immediately sent to a microbiology lab. The obtained data were entered into SPSS 2016 and analyzed using statistical tests. Results showed that disinfecting effect of Zataria multiflora is better than Deconex in eliminating certain bacterial species such as Staphylococcus and Bacillus. So Zataria multiflora essence can be used as a surface and hospital equipment disinfectant along with other disinfectant compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For obtaining bioactive compounds, decoction of Zataria multiflora Boiss. (ZM) plant materials was interactively evaluated and compared with the modern method of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). The interactive effects of several parameters including; liquid to solid (L/S) ratio, extraction time, extraction method, and plant material size were studied and optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM). Interpretation of the model outputs revealed that total phenolic content (TPC) of the resulting extracts is mostly affected by the interactive effect of plant material size and the extraction time, while rosmarinic acid (RA) content is only affected by the extraction method. Decoctions was found to have higher RA content (21.19 (mg/g E)) in comparison to UAE extractions (11.64 (mg/g E)), statistically significant at (p = 0.05). In addition, UAE as the modern method of extraction showed no privilege over the conventional method in the case of RA and TPC extraction. However, results suggest higher efficiency of UAE compared to decoction for extraction of antioxidant compounds by water. Eventually, ZM decoction obtained by the optimal extraction conditions was chemically characterized for the first time by the aid of LC-MS/MS chromatography. Naringenin, which is almost exclusively found in Citrus fruits, besides luteolin-7-O-rutinoside and a natural derivative of citric acid were shown to be the major constituents of ZM decoction. Medicinal plants are valuable sources of natural antioxidants such as some terpenoids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds. Zataria multiflora Boiss. is one of the species in the Lamiaceae family that is used in the medicine, cosmetic and food industries. It has high potential as a suitable alternative to synthetic antioxidants in reducing oxidative stress. Therefore, fifteen populations of Z. multiflora in five provinces of Iran were selected in new habitats to evaluate amounts of flavonoids, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity for further examination in domestication, breeding and cultivation programs. The samples were air-dried at room temperature and then were powdered and macerated with aqueous pure methanol in a ratio 10:1 (v/w) by 48 h, resulting liquids were filtered and concentrated under vacuum evaporator to get the crude hydroalcoholic extracts. Subsequently, the total polyphenol, flavonoid and antioxidant content were determined. The total phenol content was measured according to Folin-Ciocalteu method. Total flavonoid content was quantified using the colorimetric method with aluminum chloride. Also antioxidant activity was evaluated using the method of DPPH free-radical scavenging activity. The maximum and minimum amounts of total phenol were observed in Tang-e-Zagh (378.9 mg GAE/g Extract) and Kerman (199.2 mg GAE/g Extract), respectively. The maximum difference flavonoid was 32.7 mg QE/g Extract which was observed between Jiroft and Pasargad populations. Results showed that the most antioxidant activity was obtained in Tashk and Faryab populations.
