This present study investigates the recovery of wood biomass ash (WBA) as chemical stabilize in compacted earth bricks. The specimens were tested for compressive and thermal properties in dry state. The tests were performed at 7 and 28 days of age in order to evaluate the effect of the partial substitution of soil with WBA on the mechanical and thermal properties of the compressed earth bricks. The results indicate that bricks manufactured with 20% of partial substitution showed better performance than those containing only soil. Nevertheless, the use of WBA as source of lime improved the compressive strength and the thermal conductivity of the bricks stabilized with different proportions (5, 10, 15 and 20% wt) when compared with bricks fabricated with 100% soil. This improvement is owing to the pozzolanic reaction produced between the soil components and the WBA as well as the soil microstructure. It was also concluded that the combination of the soil components and lime containing in WBA in the stabilization of compressed earth bricks seems to be a promising alternative when considering issues of energy consumption and pollution. This review provides an overview of methods to extract valuable resources from the ash fractions of sewage sludge, municipal solid waste, and wood biomass combustion. The resources addressed here include critical raw materials, such as phosphorus, base and precious metals, and rare earth elements for which it is increasingly important to tap into secondary sources in addition to the mining of primary raw materials. The extraction technologies prioritized in this review are based on recycled acids or excess renewable energy to achieve an optimum environmental profile for the extracted resources and provide benefits in the form of local industrial symbioses. The extraction methods cover all scarce and valuable chemical elements contained in the ashes above certain concentration limits. Another important part of this review is defining potential applications for the mineral residues remaining after extraction. Therefore, the aim of this review is to combine the knowledge of resource extraction technology from ashes with possible applications of mineral residues in construction and related sectors to fully close material cycle loops. Renewables-based power grid expansion has increased the use of wood biomass as a low-carbon fuel, resulting in the generation of predominantly inorganic wood biomass ash (WBA) as waste during biomass combustion. The conservation of historically valuable, damaged, and energy-inefficient buildings can help downsize carbon emissions and energy consumption, while promoting the use of alternative repair materials, including unavailing materials such as WBA, and implementing zero-waste measures. This study aims to underscore the importance of a proactive approach in managing WBA and its application in artificial hydraulic lime (AHL) mortars. Hybrid lime mortars were prepared by combining natural hydraulic lime (NHL) as the primary binder with fly wood biomass ash (WBA) as the secondary substitute, using different mass ratios of NHL to WBA (100:0, 80:20, and 70:30). The experimental framework encompassed interconnected analytical steps, ranging from binder analysis to paste and mortar preparation. The chemical and mineralogical composition, physical properties, and reactivity of WBA were evaluated to determine the appropriate proportion of WBA for low-carbon AHL binder formulation. Prior to mortar mixing, the water demand, setting time, and soundness of the AHL pastes were assessed. The effects of each AHL binder blend on the mechanical properties of the AHL mortars were analyzed based on compressive and flexural strength measurements after 28 days of curing under different CO2 and moisture conditions (CO2~400 ppm at 70% RH and 95% RH; CO2~30,000 ppm at 60% RH). Additionally, changes in the porous structure were studied. Notwithstanding the greatly prolonged setting time, the results indicate that the mechanical properties of AHL mortars can be enhanced by the addition of WBA in a moderate ratio, empowering the development of environmentally friendly lime mortars suitable for conservation purposes.

The concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is constantly increasing, leading to an increase in the average global temperature and, thus, affecting climate change. Hence, various initiatives have been proposed to mitigate this process, among which CO2 sequestration is a technically simple and efficient approach. The spontaneous carbonation of ashes with atmospheric CO2 is very slow, and this is why accelerated carbonation is encouraged. However, not all ashes are equally suitable for this process, so a methodology to evaluate their potential should be developed. Such a methodology involves a combination of techniques, from theoretical calculations to XRF, XRD, DTA-TG, and the calcimetric determination of the CaCO3 content. The present study followed the approach of exposing ashes to accelerated carbonation conditions (4% v/v CO2, 50–55% and 80–85% RH, 20 °C) in a closed carbonation chamber for different periods of time until the maximum CO2 uptake is reached. The amount of sequestered CO2 was quantified by thermogravimetry. The results show that the highest CO2 sequestration capacity (33.8%) and carbonation efficiency (67.9%) were obtained for wood biomass bottom ash. This method was applied to eight combustion ashes and could serve to evaluate other ashes or comparable carbon storage materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research concerned the possibilities of the natural management of ash, which is a waste product obtained in the process of burning wood chips in a bio-heating plant. The basis of the research was a pot experiment, which was carried out in a greenhouse of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland. This experiment dealt with the influence of increasing doses of wood biomass ash added to soil on selected soil properties. The soil used for the pot experiment was taken from the arable layer (0–25 cm) of the soil. It was characterized by acidic reaction, low salinity, and an average content of total carbon (TC). The test plant was corn. Soil analysis after plant harvest showed an increase in pH and a significant improvement of soil sorption properties, without causing an excessive increase in soil salinity. In addition, a significant increase in the content of available K, P, and Mg was observed, which at the highest dose of WBA reached: 121.9; 109.3, and 41.33 mg kg−1 of soil, respectively. The content of trace metals: iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), chrome (Cr), and nickel (Ni) in the soil was quite varied but did not exceed the permissible values for agricultural soils. The content of available forms of these trace metals at the highest dose of WBA was, respectively, 1004, 129.9, 8.70, 2.08, 5.54, 0.195, 1.47, 0.97, and 1.92 kg−1 of soil. Downsizing fossil fuel dependence and greenhouse gas emissions is at the forefront of a sustainable future. The expansion of renewable energy while striving to minimize dependence on fossil fuels has led to biomass taking the lead among renewable energy sources, with wood having the broadest application. Along with the growing trend of using biomass as a renewable energy source, the combustion of wood biomass results in wood biomass ash (WBA), leading to compelling amounts of waste. In this study, the technical feasibility of fly WBA from different Croatian power plants was analyzed to evaluate its potential use in precast concrete drainage elements and curb units. By implementing a performance-based design, the influence of various factors in thermal processing of wood biomass was investigated, together with a detailed characterization of WBA in order to assess the feasibility of using WBA as a secondary raw material in a large-scale industrial batching plant. The compressive strength and durability properties (water absorption, permeability, and freeze–thaw resistance) of concrete mixtures with WBA as a replacement for 15 wt% cement were evaluated and compared with the precast concrete manufacturer’s technical requirements. The main concerns identified were compositional inconsistency of WBA, workability downturn, delay in initial reactivity rate, and increased water absorption. Concrete with WBA based on a circular design has been found to be a viable solution to cement depletion, stepping up from recycling to reuse of industrial waste.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels is the cornerstone of all European climate and energy strategies. Consequently, renewable energy sources are becoming more competitive with fossil fuels. The largest source of bioenergy in the European Union is biomass-fired power plants. Therefore, the European coal phase-out strategy led to an increased use of wood biomass as a sustainable fuel, generating large amounts of wood biomass ash (WBA). In the research studies reported so far, WBA has been mainly used in cementitious composites. However, given the similarities between the chemical composition of WBA and hydraulic lime (HL), this research focused on its potential classification as a building lime. Overall, three different sources of fly WBA were considered for the preparation of binders as mixtures of WBA and coal fly ash (CFA) in different ratios. The contribution of each binder mixture on the paste and mortar properties was analyzed based on the chemical composition, setting time, volume stability, and contribution to the mortar strength (compressive and flexural). In general, it can be concluded that the studied binders can meet the criteria of EN 459-1. However, special attention should be paid to the volume deformations and the setting time.

Since ash from wood biomass mostly ends up in landfills, recent research has focused on finding its economic and environmental added value as a potential new raw material in the construction industry. However, for wood ash to be used on an industrial scale in construction, a strategy for its proper storage must be defined. Proper storage of WBA is important to ensure quality control for applications in cementitious composites. This work investigated the aging of wood biomass ash (WBA) collected from five different power plants in Croatia and its influence on the performance of cementitious composites. WBA and cement pastes were investigated at different aging times (up to one year) using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), isothermal calorimetry and initial and final setting times. The results showed that storage of WBA in closed and open containers resulted in carbonation and hydration of mainly free lime and periclase, respectively, which affected the reactivity and setting times of WBA cement pastes.

Worldwide there is a significant increase in amounts of wood biomass ash (WBA), a waste from wood biomass combustion process. In this case study, 21 different sources of wood biomass ash (WBA), namely fly ash, bottom ash, and mixed ash from 10 different power plants in the Republic of Croatia were characterised based on their physical-chemical properties. Compared to the criteria listed for the use of coal fly ash in the concrete industry (EN 450), most WBAs exhibit higher loss of ignition values, high CaO and MgO contents, and higher total alkali and sulfur content. The results show a higher amount of alkalies and heavy metals in fly ash (WBA-F) as compared to bottom ash (WBA-B), but also their potential stabilisation in glassy phases. Based on WBA characterisation results, collected WBAs were benchmarked and categorised for three different resource replacements in production of cement and concrete: 1) partial replacement of a raw material for clinker production; 2) partial cement replacement as a mineral admixture in cementitious composites, and 3) partial replacement of aggregates used for concrete production. For this a new method for WBAs quality-ranking ordering is proposed, based on a normalisation approach relative to some quality criteria. The proposed preliminary screening methodology enables to address an important technological challenge in high variability in quality parameters of WBAs originating from many different sources. Abstract The key point of this investigation is to valorize CaCO 3 -rich wood biomass ash (WBA) from brick industry in the preparation of one-part white geopolymer cement (WGPC) using diatomite as main ingredient. The suggested method not only implemented for cleaner production of eco-friendly cement, but also used to WBA disposal. In the present work, WBA was treated with different sodium hydroxide concentrations (at NaOH: CaCO 3 molar ratios of 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25), followed by dying and pulverizing to produce dry activator powder with a fixed fineness. The impact of dry activator content, containing the same NaOH content (3 wt. %), on the performance of one-part WGPC was evaluated by setting times, total porosity, and compressive strength measurements. The results revealed that the compressive strength development enhances with time, associating with the continuation of aluminosilicate (in diatomite) dissolution and formation of strength-giving-phases such as calcium silicate hydrate and calcium aluminosilicate hydrate. The synergistic filling and nucleating effects of CaCO 3 were recorded when 21.5 wt.,% of pretreated WBA, at NaOH/CaCO 3 molar ratio of 0.5, added to diatomite to yield one-part WGPC with optimal 28-days compressive strength (48 MPa) and relatively high whiteness (85%). This qualifies the prepared one-part WGPC to be beneficially used as alternative to white Portland cement in decorative works and prestige construction projects.
