Objective: Attention problems are one of the most pronounced and documented consequences of very preterm birth (gestational age ≤32 weeks). However, up to now, there is no research published on suitable interventions at school age aimed to overcome these problems. Research in this population did show that executive functions (EFs) are strongly associated with inattention. BrainGame Brian is a newly developed computerized training, in which, in 25 training sessions, the core EFs, including working memory, impulse control, and cognitive flexibility, are trained. This pilot study aimed to examine the feasibility of studying BrainGame Brian in very preterm-born children with attention problems., Design: Pilot feasibility intervention study with one baseline and one follow-up assessment., Materials and Methods: Feasibility was measured by the participation rate, dropout rate, and user experiences with regard to effort, training characteristics, and recommendation to others. From a larger cohort study, 15 very preterm-born children at age 10 years with parent-reported attention problems on the Child Behavior Checklist/6-18 years were invited to participate in this pilot study. BrainGame Brian was performed for a period of 6 weeks. Training outcome measures included visual working memory, impulse control, cognitive flexibility, speed variability, and parent-rated attention, for which pre- and post-training differences were examined at the group level by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test as well as for each individual child separately by the reliable change index., Results: Twelve of 15 children and their parents agreed to participate and 11 children successfully completed BrainGame Brian in the 6-week period. Parents were positive about training characteristics and lack of interference with schooling, but scored the effort as high. We found clinically significant changes in visual working memory and speed variability in post-training assessments., Conclusion: BrainGame Brian is a feasible intervention for very preterm-born children with attention problems.

Ten observers viewed Vermeer's painting Girl With a Pearl Earring and estimated her direction of gaze when her eyes were exposed together and separately. The observers also viewed the painting when her eyes were digitally replaced by those of a real person. The authors found that Vermeer painted the girl's eyes with a precision that was near the limits of visual acuity. Also, Vermeer included 3 gaze illusions, none of which researchers have documented as known in Vermeer's time: (a) when a model whose head is turned to one side gazes at an observer, there is an illusion that she is looking to the side of the observer away from the direction of her head turn; (b) when a model's eyes are viewed separately, they appear to gaze outward relative to each other; and (c) when both of a model's eyes are viewed, the perceived direction of gaze follows that of the nearer eye.

Ocular components were measured by keratometry, phakometry, and ultrasonography on 176 young adults. Refractive error was measured by retinoscopy. Mean vitreous depth was greater and the cornea was steeper in myopes than in emmetropes. There were no significant differences between myopes and emmetropes in mean anterior chamber depth, crystalline lens thickness, anterior crystalline lens radius, posterior crystalline lens radius, or crystalline lens power. Coefficients of correlation were calculated for each of the ocular components with refractive error for the entire group of 176 subjects. The components that showed statistically significant correlations with refractive error were vitreous depth and anterior corneal radius. Eyes with greater vitreous depths tended to have flatter anterior corneal surfaces. The slope of the principal axis relating these two variables was significantly different in emmetropes and myopes. Eyes with greater vitreous depths tended to have lesser crystalline lens power. Vitreous depth showed a statistically significant correlation with posterior lens radius, but not with anterior lens radius.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were measured in the breathing zone air of 56 battery workers at two cokeovens during three consecutive days. The concentration of total PAH ranged up to 186 micrograms/m3. Preshift and end of shift urine samples were collected to determine 1-hydroxypyrene, a metabolite of pyrene. Control urine samples were available from 44 workers in the shipping yard of a hot rolling mill. The median values of 1-hydroxypyrene in urine of smoking and non-smoking controls were 0.51 and 0.17 mumol/mol creatinine, respectively. Concentrations of 1-hydroxypyrene up to 11.2 mumol/mol were found in the urine of the cokeoven workers. At the start of the three day working period after 32 hours off work, the 1-hydroxypyrene concentrations were four times higher and at the end of the working period 10 times higher compared with control concentrations. Excretion of 1-hydroxypyrene occurred with a half life of 6-35 hours. Both the ambient air monitoring data and the biological monitoring data showed that the topside workers were the heaviest exposed workers. The relation between air monitoring data and biological monitoring data was not strong. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify determinants of the internal dose. The combination of exposure and smoking amplify each other and the use of a protective airstream helmet decreases the internal dose. An effect of alcohol consumption and the use of medication on the toxicokinetics of pyrene was not found.

We have undertaken a study among coke-oven workers to test the feasibility of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with anti-trans-7,8-dihydroxy-9,10-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydro-benzo[a]pyrene- DNA antibodies for monitoring occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Coke-oven workers are occupationally exposed to relatively high levels of PAH and are at increased risk for lung cancer. Three blood samples were collected from each of the 56 coke-oven workers exposed to PAH and 44 unexposed workers employed in a steel-rolling factory of the same plant. In addition, PAH levels were measured in ambient air by personal sampling, and the excretion of 1-hydroxypyrene in urine was also measured on 3 consecutive working days. All participants were interviewed regarding working conditions, personal hygiene, and smoking habits. The results showed that the coke-oven workers were exposed to substantial concentrations of atmospheric PAH (1-186 micrograms/m3), including benzo[a]pyrene (0.1-7.8 micrograms/m3) and pyrene (0.6-23.6 micrograms/m3). Both benzo[a]pyrene and pyrene were shown to be representative for the whole group of PAH. Forty-seven percent of the coke-oven workers had detectable levels of PAH-DNA adducts in their white blood cells, compared with 30% of the controls. In both groups, smokers had significantly higher levels of PAH-DNA adducts than did nonsmokers. At one site, we found the correlation positive between DNA adducts and the duration of exposure (r = .47, P = .005). Generally, the correlation was not significant between PAH-DNA adducts in blood and the concentration of PAH in the air and 1-hydroxypyrene in urine.

Phakometry is a technique for measurement of the crystalline lens radii of curvature, usually involving photography of the Purkinje images. We have devised a system of comparison phakometry using commercially available camera equipment. This paper contains a description of the apparatus, technique, and necessary calculations. Reliability of the method is discussed.

Defects in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), as revealed by black and white photography with short wave length light, are frequently an early sign of glaucoma. We describe how to photograph and evaluate the RNFL. Negatives can be mounted as slides with slide mounts and examined with a slit lamp. This eliminates costly printing and enlarging.
