Biofunctionalized micro- and nanoparticles are important for a wide range of applications, but methodologies to measure, modulate, and model interactions between individual particles are scarce. Here, we describe a technique to measure the aggregation rate of two particles to a single dimer, by recording the trajectory that a particle follows on the surface of another particle as a function of time. The trajectory and the interparticle potential are controlled by a magnetic field. Particles were studied with and without conjugated antibodies in a wide range of pH conditions. The data shows that the aggregation process strongly depends on the particle surface charge density and hardly on the antibody surface coverage. Furthermore, microscopy videos of single particle dimers reveal the presence of reactive patches and thus heterogeneity in the particle surface reactivity. The aggregation rates measured with the single-dimer experiment are compared to data from an ensemble aggregation experiment. Quantitative agreement is obtained using a model that includes the influence of surface heterogeneity on particle aggregation. This single-dimer experiment clarifies how heterogeneities in particle reactivity play a role in colloidal stability.

Magnetic particles are widely used in lab-on-chip and biosensing applications, because they have a high surface-to-volume ratio, they can be actuated with magnetic fields and many biofunctionalization options are available. The most well-known actuation method is to apply a magnetic field gradient which generates a translational force on the particles and allows separation of the particles from a suspension. A more recently developed magnetic actuation method is to exert torque on magnetic particles by a rotating magnetic field. Rotational actuation can be achieved with a field that is uniform in space and it allows for a precise control of torque, orientation, and angular velocity of magnetic particles in lab-on-chip devices. A wide range of studies have been performed with rotating MPs, demonstrating fluid mixing, concentration determination of biological molecules in solution, and characterization of structure and function of biomolecules at the single-molecule level. In this paper we give a comprehensive review of the historical development of MP rotation studies, including configurations for field generation, physical model descriptions, and biological applications. We conclude by sketching the scientific and technological developments that can be expected in the future in the field of rotating magnetic particles for lab-on-chip applications.

We demonstrate a novel approach to quantify the interparticle distance in colloidal dimers using Mie scattering. The interparticle distance is varied in a controlled way by changing the ionic strength of the solution and the magnetic attraction between the particles. The measured scaling behavior is interpreted using an energy-distance model that includes the repulsive electrostatic and attractive magnetic interactions. The center-to-center distances of particles with a 525 nm radius can be determined with a root-mean-square accuracy of 12 nm. The data show that the center-to-center distance is larger by 83 nm compared to perfect spheres. The underlying distance offset can be attributed to repulsion by charged protrusions caused by particle surface roughness. The measurement method accurately quantifies interparticle distances that can be used to study cluster formation and colloid aggregation in complex systems, e.g., in biosensing applications.

Aggregation processes of colloidal particles are of broad scientific and technological relevance. The earliest stage of aggregation, when dimers appear in an ensemble of single particles, is very important to characterize because it opens routes for further aggregation processes. Furthermore, it represents the most sensitive phase of diagnostic aggregation assays. Here, we characterize dimers by rotating them in a magnetic field and by recording the angle dependence of light scattering. At small scattering angles, the scattering cross section can be approximated by the total cross-sectional area of the dimer. In contrast, at scattering angles around 90 degrees, we reveal that the dependence of the scattering cross section on the dimer angle shows a series of peaks per single 2π rotation of the dimers. These characteristics originate from optical interactions between the two particles, as we have verified with two-particle Mie scattering simulations. We have studied in detail the angular positions of the peaks. It appears from simulations that the influence of particle size polydispersity, Brownian rotation and refractive index on the angular positions of the peaks is relatively small. However, the angular positions of the peaks strongly depend on the distance between the particles. We find a good correspondence between measured data and calculations for a gap of 180 nm between particles having a diameter of 1 micrometer. The experiment and simulations pave the way for extracting distance-specific data from ensembles of dimerizing colloidal particles, with application for sensitive diagnostic aggregation assays.

Antimony δ-doping layers were made by deposition of Sb on monocrystalline Si, followed by the deposition of amorphous Si and a final solid-phase-epitaxy treatment at 620 °C. After post-annealing at temperatures between 625 and 725 °C, Sb precipitates with a diameter of several nm are observed in the δ plane with the aid of transmission electron microscopy. Using channeling Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry the increase of the precipitated fraction with time was determined from the minimum-yield signal. The results are interpreted using a model for the generation of Sb nuclei which grow subsequently due to lateral diffusion of Sb atoms in the δ plane, followed by incorporation into the nucleus. The generation of the nuclei appears to take place by way of two parallel processes: (i) fast, simultaneous generation of a limited number of nuclei at low-energetic sites in the δ plane, with subsequent diffusion-controlled growth, and (ii) slow, continuous generation of a larger number of nuclei at random sites in the δ plane, with subsequent incorporation-controlled growth. The Sb diffusion at the extremely high concentrations under consideration is very fast and concentration dependent, which can be explained by the model of vacancy-percolation diffusion of Mathiot and Pfister [J. Appl. Phys. 66, 970 (1989)]. The activation energy for incorporation of Sb atoms into liquid precipitates appears to be considerably lower than for incorporation into solid ones.
