The aim of the presented research is to evaluate the potential performance of a new bending magnet X-ray beamline—PolyX, designed for microimaging and microspectroscopy at the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS in Krakow. Due to the short beamline length (<15 m), PolyX uses compact polycapillary and single-bounce monocapillary optics for X-ray focusing in the 4–15 keV energy range. Polycapillary optics require a dedicated approach for an efficient simulation of X-ray propagation in multiple capillary channels. Therefore, the PolyX beamline was ray traced by combining XRT (XRayTracer) and polycap libraries. In addition, to estimate the X-ray fluorescence spectra excited by focused beams, Monte Carlo simulations were conducted using XMI-MSIM. All simulations were aimed to estimate the crucial X-ray beam properties, i.e., the flux, the spot size, and the energy spectrum, for monochromatic and polychromatic X-ray beams. Synchrotron light sources can provide the required spatial coherence, stability and control to support the development of advanced lithography at the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray wavelengths that are relevant to current and future fabricating technologies. Here an evaluation of the optical performance of the soft X-ray (SXR) beamline of the Australian Synchrotron (AS) and its suitability for developing interference lithography using radiation in the 91.8 eV (13.5 nm) to 300 eV (4.13 nm) range are presented. A comprehensive physical optics model of the APPLE-II undulator source and SXR beamline was constructed to simulate the properties of the illumination at the proposed location of a photomask, as a function of photon energy, collimation and monochromator parameters. The model is validated using a combination of experimental measurements of the photon intensity distribution of the undulator harmonics. It is shown that the undulator harmonics intensity ratio can be accurately measured using an imaging detector and controlled using beamline optics. Finally, the photomask geometric constraints and achievable performance for the limiting case of fully spatially coherent illumination are evaluated.

Following the rapid growth in accelerator-based light sources research since the mid of 20th century, miscellaneous third generation synchrotron radiation (SR) facilities such as SSRL, APS, ESRF, PETRA-III, and SPring-8 have come into existence. These SR source facilities provide 1020–1025 photons/s/mrad2/mm2/0.1%BW peak brightness within the photon energy range of 10–105 eV. Since different measurement techniques are utilized at X-ray beamlines of SR facilities, many kinds of insertion devices (i.e., undulators and wigglers) and optical components (e.g., high-resolution monochromators, double-crystal monochromators, lenses, mirrors, etc.) are employed for each experimental setup as a matter of course. Under the circumstances, optimization of a synchrotron beamline is a big concern for many scientists to ensure required radiation characteristics (i.e., photon flux, spot size, photon energy, etc.) for dedicated user experiments. In this respect, an in-vacuum hybrid undulator driven by a 6 GeV synchrotron electron beam is optimized using evolutionary algorithms (EA). Finally, it is shown that EA results are well consistent with both the literature and the analytical calculations, resulting in a promising design estimation for beamline scientists. The mutual optical intensity (MOI) model is a partially coherent radiation propagation tool that can sequentially simulate beamline optics and provide beam intensity, local degree of coherence and phase distribution at any location along a beamline. This paper extends the MOI model to non-ideal two-dimensional (2D) optical systems, such as ellipsoidal and toroidal mirrors with 2D figure errors. Simulation results show that one can tune the trade-off between calculation efficiency and accuracy by varying the number of wavefront elements. The focal spot size of an ellipsoidal mirror calculated with 100 × 100 elements gives less than 0.4% deviation from that with 250 × 250 elements, and the computation speed is nearly two orders of magnitude faster. Effects of figure errors on 2D focusing are also demonstrated for a non-ideal ellipsoidal mirror and by comparing the toroidal and ellipsoidal mirrors. Finally, the MOI model is benchmarked against the multi-electron Synchrotron Radiation Workshop (SRW) code showing the model's high accuracy.

To accurately gather suitable experimental data, it is essential to establish fully automated measurement systems to reduce the workload of the beamline staff. Moreover, the recent COVID-19 pandemic has further emphasized the necessity of automated and/or remote measurements at synchrotron beamlines. Here, the installation of a new sample changer combined with a high-temperature furnace and a fully automated alignment system on beamline BL04B2 at SPring-8 is reported. The system allows X-ray total scattering measurements of up to 21 samples at different temperatures (from room temperature to 1200°C) to be conducted without any human assistance.

Convenience and cost often lead to synchrotron beamlines where the final Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) focusing pair must relay the final image to different samples at different image distances [Proc. FEL2009, 246-249 (2009)], either for different experimental chambers, or diagnostics. We present an initial analytical approach, starting from, and extending the work of Howells et al. [OE 39(10), 2748-62 (2000)] to analyze the trade-offs between choice of mirror, bending couples and the given, shaped sagittal width of the optic. Both experimentally and in simulation, we have found that sagittally shaped optics can perform with high quality at significantly different incidence angles and conjugate distances. We present one successful demonstration from the ALS Optical Metrology Beamline 5.3.1.

The mutual optical intensity propagation of partially coherent light through a beamline is calculated for different aperture sizes and positions. The coherence, intensity and phase distribution can be extracted from the mutual optical intensity. The phase distribution depends on the aperture size and position. The results show that the widest flat phase distribution is obtained at the optimized aperture size and position. The aperture plays a more important role for partially coherent light than for incoherent light. The influence of the aperture size and position on the intensity and spot size at the focal plane is also analyzed. A way to obtain a balance between the flat phase distribution area, spot size and intensity for partially coherent light in the beamline is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In-situ synchrotron FTIR studies were conducted using four Victorian brown coals and one Thailand lignite to examine the evolution of functional groups from the surface of the sample during pyrolysis from room temperature to 550 °C. TGA data showed that the pyrolysis of all coals is comprised of a drying stage (30–200 °C) and devolatilization stage (200–900 °C). FTIR data showed that compared to Victorian brown coals, less surface functional groups were found in Thailand lignite. The loss of functional groups from Thailand lignite was observed during drying, and the devolatilization consisted of two stages. For Victorian brown coals, the concentration of oxygen contained hydroxyl and carboxyl groups decreased during the drying stage, due to the removal of water, and breakdown of weakly bonded alkene and alkyne. When temperature gradually increased during devolatilization stage, more functional groups were released. However, by 550 °C, the groups at the wavenumber of 1700–1340 cm −1 (carbonyl, carboxylate, aromatic ring, CH 3 and CH 2 groups) remained in the sample. Based on the spectra taken of two chars from the same brown coals, these groups were not completely removed until 1000 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structure solution based on the weak anomalous signal from native (protein and DNA) crystals is increasingly being attempted as part of synchrotron experiments. Maximizing the measurable anomalous signal by collecting diffraction data at longer wavelengths presents a series of technical challenges caused by the increased absorption of X-rays and larger diffraction angles. A new beamline at Diamond Light Source has been built specifically for collecting data at wavelengths beyond the capability of other synchrotron macromolecular crystallography beamlines. Here, the theoretical considerations in support of the long-wavelength beamline are outlined and the in-vacuum design of the endstation is discussed, as well as other hardware features aimed at enhancing the accuracy of the diffraction data. Interference lithography is an effective method of patterning periodic structures with limits set by light diffraction. Using this method at the short wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray provides additional advantages such as high photoresist absorption and low proximity effects. Operating at these short wavelengths, however, associates technical challenges such as light source, optics, transmission masks, and photoresists. Several research groups around the world have set up infrastructures to utilize interference lithography at this wavelength range for different applications. In this article we briefly review the works of these groups in terms of their light source, instrumentation, and achievements. We present more technical in-depth description of the illumination light source arrangements at our XIL-II beamline at the Swiss Light Source and the tabletop system at RWTH Aachen. We describe high-resolution mask fabrication and implementation, as well as achievements in photoresist patterning at cutting-edge resolutions. Moreover, we describe other methods of patterning at these wavelength regimes, such as Beyond EUV lithography, making tall nanostructures, and Talbot lithography. The HERMES beamline (High Efficiency and Resolution beamline dedicated to X-ray Microscopy and Electron Spectroscopy), built at Synchrotron SOLEIL (Saint-Auban, France), is dedicated to soft X-ray microscopy. The beamline combines two complementary microscopy methods: XPEEM (X-ray Photo Emitted Electron Microscopy) and STXM (Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy) with an aim to reach spatial resolution below 20 nm and to fully exploit the local spectroscopic capabilities of the two microscopes. The availability of the two methods within the same beamline enables the users to select the appropriate approach to study their specific case in terms of sample environment, spectroscopy methods, probing depth etc. In this paper a general description of the beamline and its design are presented. The performance and specifications of the beamline will be reviewed in detail. Moreover, the article is aiming to demonstrate how the beamline performances have been specifically optimized to fulfill the specific requirements of a soft X-ray microscopy beamline in terms of flux, resolution, beam size etc. Special attention has been dedicated to overcome some limiting and hindering problems that are usually encountered on soft X-ray beamlines such as carbon contamination, thermal stability and spectral purity. The structure determination of an integral membrane protein using synchrotron X-ray diffraction data collected at room temperature directly in vapour-diffusion crystallization plates ( in situ) is demonstrated. Exposing the crystals in situ eliminates manual sample handling and, since it is performed at room temperature, removes the complication of cryoprotection and potential structural anomalies induced by sample cryocooling. Essential to the method is the ability to limit radiation damage by recording a small amount of data per sample from many samples and subsequently assembling the resulting data sets using specialized software. The validity of this procedure is established by the structure determination of Haemophilus influenza TehA at 2.3 Å resolution. The method presented offers an effective protocol for the fast and efficient determination of membrane-protein structures at room temperature using third-generation synchrotron beamlines. The article focuses on BioCARS, the facility for monochromatic macromolecular time-resolved X-ray crystallography which has been supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The authors state that the facility has a bending-magnet (BM) and an insertion device (ID) beamline. They state that the ID beamline has been upgraded with a redesign of the X-ray optics, construction of a second optics enclosure (SOE), and upgraded instrumentation for the time-resolved (TR) research program.

Abstract: A dispersive extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) beamline employing an elliptically bent crystal and a position-sensitive CCD detector has been developed at the BL-8 bending magnet port of INDUS-2 synchrotron source at RRCAT, Indore, India. The beamline enables simultaneous measurement of X-ray absorption spectra over the range of 5–20keV in a short span of time. The beamline performance has been investigated by measuring the absorption spectra of metal foils and oxide powders. The EXAFS measurements on crystalline Pb5Ge3O11 samples were performed for the first time in literature. The average Pb–O bond length obtained from these measurements is found to agree well with the theoretically estimated value. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A new state-of-the art synchrotron beamline fully optimized for monochromatic X-ray diffraction at high pressure and high (or low) temperature is presented. In comparison with the old high-pressure beamline ID30, this new beamline exhibits outstanding performance in terms of photon flux and focusing capabilities. The main components of this new instrument will be described in detail and compared with the performance of beamline ID30. In particular, the choices in terms of X-ray source, X-ray optics, sample environment and detectors are discussed. The first results of the beamline commissioning are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
