This research aims to establish the link between blockchain technology adoption in the maritime and shipping industry and its impact on maritime supply chain integration via a systematic review of both the academic and practice literature. In total 148 articles were identified and analysed. Blockchain applications identified from the literature are categorized into three domains: document management, transaction management, and cargo/vessel/terminal operations. An analysis of the benefits and challenges that influence the deployment of blockchain technology for maritime supply chain integration leads to the development of an integrated and extended Technology, Organization, and Environment (TOE) framework. This study is among the first to examine the current state of blockchain diffusion within the maritime supply chain, making a significant contribution to the field. The extended TOE framework offers guidance for future research and understanding of the relationship between blockchain adoption and maritime supply chain integration. This study aims to investigate the antecedent of supply chain transparency (SCT) and its impact on mitigating supply chain risk (SCRISK) and enhancing supply chain resilience (SCR). Furthermore, this study seeks to examine the moderating effect of supply chain integration (SCI) on the relationship between SCT and SCRISK, as well as SCT and SCR. Utilizing hierarchical regression on survey data from 332 Chinese companies, the results have revealed that SCI had a significant positive effect on SCT, which further leads to decreased SCRISK and increased SCR. Meanwhile, SCI negatively moderates the relationship between SCT and SCRISK but has no moderating effect on the relationship between SCT and SCR. By examining the critical role of SCT, the research opens the black box of the relationship between SCI and supply chain risk and resilience management and provides insights into how firms can establish and utilize SCT more effectively. Supply chain integration (SCI) has been considered an antecedent of sustainability performance (SP) by some studies; however, empirical findings on the nexus between SCI and SP in the existing literature are inconsistent. The study aims to provide an extensive literature review on the SCI–SP relationship. We propose a conceptual research framework to investigate the SCI–SP relationship with consideration of the effects of contextual moderators. A meta-analysis is adopted to analyse the sample of 60 selected empirical papers focusing on this relationship. The results provide evidence of a positive relationship between SCI and SP, which is affected by the two types of moderating variables: operationalisation of SP construct and control variables (industry sector, economic development, and the country's logistics capabilities). We find that SCI has the greatest impact on economic SP and the lowest impact on social SP. The SCI–SP relationship is more robust in the service industry than in the manufacturing industry. When a country's logistics capabilities increase, SCI's influence on SP becomes weaker. The results of this study are drawn from extant empirical research, and thus the validity and reliability of these findings rely on the validity and reliability of the original studies. This study is the first meta-analysis to examine the vital relationship between SCI and SP and adopted a country's logistics capabilities as a moderator. Purpose – This study aims to assess the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in retail stores to improve supply chain visibility and integration. Design/methodology/approach – This study employed a qualitative methodology with data collected using semi-structured interviews from a sample selected using purposive sampling. The population consists of 48 employees, of which 6 were selected for the sample as they worked directly with IoT and supply chain issues. Participants were from a SPAR franchise store (Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regalmatig). Findings – Thematic analysis was used to analyse the transcribed data from the interviews. The themes identified include supply chain visibility, supply chain integration and IoT. The findings indicate that the main IoT used is an organisational-wide system, the SIGMA (SPAR Integrated Goods Management Application) system. Other technologies that aid supply chain visibility and integration are geotags, the internet, WhatsApp social media applications, emails and scanners. Practical implications – From the findings, this study recommends that IoT systems should be frequently updated to reflect current trends and that IoT systems should enable the integration of small and medium Enterprises (SMEs) suppliers. Originality/value – The Fourth Industrial Revolution has ushered in new technologies that revolutionise business operations. Among these technologies is the IoT, which has ushered in a new connectivity area. However, there is little research on the use of IoT for supply chain visibility and integration in the South African retail sector. It provides sector-specific insights and recommendations for retailers, which might not be covered in general supply chain management literature.

Purpose – To delve into the integration of global logistics and supply chain networks amidst the digital transformation era. This study aims to investigate the potential role of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in facilitating the integration of global flows encompassing both tangible goods and intangibles. Additionally, the study seeks to incorporate third-party logistics activities into a comprehensive global logistics and supply chain integration framework. Design/methodology/approach – Prior research is synthesised into a global logistics and supply chain integration framework. A case study was undertaken on Yuan Tong (YTO) express group to investigate the framework, employing qualitative data analysis techniques. The study specifically examined the context of the BRI to enhance comprehension of its impact on global supply chains. Information was collected in particular to two types of supply chain flows, the physical flow of goods, and intangible information and cash flows. Findings – The proposed framework aligns well with the case study, leading to the identification of global logistics and supply chain integration enablers. The results demonstrate a range of ways BRI promotes global logistics and supply chain integration. Research limitations/implications – The case study, with multiple examples, focuses on how third-party logistics firms can embrace global logistics and supply chain integration in line with BRI. The case study approach limits generalisation, further applications in different contexts are required to validate the findings. Originality/value – The framework holds promise for aiding practitioners and researchers in gaining deeper insights into the role of the BRI in global logistics and supply chain integration within the digital era. The identified enablers underscore the importance of emphasising key factors necessary for success in navigating digital transformation within global supply chains.

With the rapid development of digital technologies, digital transformation is becoming a critical way for enterprises to improve their performance. However, the current literatures lack sufficient research on whether and how the usage of digital technology improve supply chain performance. Based-on resource-based view and information processing theory, this study examines the impact of digital transformation on supply chain performance, as well as the mediating role of supply chain integration. The proposed hypotheses are tested empirically using data collected from Chinese A-share listed manufacturing firms for the years 2015 to 2022. The results show that digital transformation has a significant impact on supply chain performance, in which supply chain integration plays a partial mediating role. After a series of endogeneity and robustness tests, the results remain valid. Further analysis also reveals that the impact of digital transformation on supply chain performance is more significant for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) than for large enterprises. In addition, firm size has a significant heterogeneous effect on this relationship, which implies that digital transformation is better able to improve SMEs' supply chain performance. While the significance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) adoption in business operations has been steadily growing, its impact on supply chain integration (SCI) and supply chain performance (SCP) remains unclear in the existing body of literature. This paper seeks to evaluate the influence of ICT adoption on SCI and SCP, delving into the presence of mediator and moderator variables. Using survey data collected from 259 participants in the dairy supply chain in Iringa, Tanzania, this quantitative study employs structural equation modeling to examine the impact of ICT adoption on SCI and performance, as well as to explore the role of SCI as a mediating factor and the moderating effect of age, gender, skills, and education level. The findings indicate that ICT adoption has no significant direct impact on SCP, as this relationship is entirely mediated by the three levels of SCI (SI, II, and CI), revealing how this connection is influenced by skills and education level. The study offers a comprehensive exploration of ICT adoption within the context of food processing supply chain per-formance, demonstrating how companies can harness the benefits of ICT adoption through SCI. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between institutional pressures, supply chain integration and supply chain performance in the wooden furniture industry. Cross-sectional survey data collected from 86 registered wooden furniture firms in Uganda were analyzed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling. The study revealed that institutional pressures are positively and significantly related with supply chain performance and that supply chain integration plays a partial mediating role in the institutional pressures-supply chain performance relationship. Further, our component level analysis of institutional pressures reveals that whereas coercive pressure has a discernible positive influence on both supply chain integration and supply chain performance, mimetic pressure does not, while normative pressure positively influences only supply chain integration. These results underline the need to understand the role of individual components of institutional pressures and integration requirements in strategic supply chain management practice in order to boost supply chain performance of the wooden furniture firms. Employing an extensive literature review, the research initially investigates their broader impact on global supply chains and subsequently focuses on integrated logistics and global sourcing domains. The findings highlight the increasing importance of supply chain integration in contemporary business strategy. The study establishes that integrating logistics and global sourcing is pivotal for achieving performance improvements crucial for success in today's competitive landscape. It demonstrates that this integration yields various organizational benefits, including cost reduction, improved technology access, enhanced sourcing consistency, strengthened supplier relationships, and improved information sharing. Blockchain has revolutionized the field of supply chain management, allowing firms to optimize their operations and achieve enhanced levels of efficiency and environmental responsibility. This study investigates the relationships between the functionalities of the blockchain-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) and many aspects of the supply chain, namely, supplier integration, internal integration, customer integration, and sustainable logistic capabilities. It also analyses the impact of these correlations on the supply chain performance and sustainability of firms. This study is grounded in an empirical inquiry carried out using a questionnaire survey of the retail industry in Pakistan. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed to analyze the data. The findings indicate a direct correlation between the use of BC-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities and the integration of the supply chain, as well as logistic capabilities. Furthermore, there is a strong and meaningful correlation between blockchain-enabled supply chain integration and sustainable logistic capabilities and firm performance. The research findings indicate that the combined impact of digital innovations results in higher levels of corporate performance and sustainability. By embracing digitization through blockchain technology, business organizations can attain supply chain excellence. This integration enhances the adoption of environmentally beneficial actions, minimizes waste, and decreases carbon emissions across supply chains, thus reinforcing the connection between sustainable firm performance and environmental sustainability. As a result, the enterprises may execute sustainably through improved logistical capabilities and effective integration. The results hold great theoretical and practical significance for improving supply chain management efficacy and accomplishing multiple SDGs, including SDG-8, SDG-9, SDG-11, and SDG-12. Purpose – This study investigates how asset specificity, relational governance and firm adaptability relate with supply chain integration (SCI), considering selected food processing firms (FPFs) in Uganda. Design/methodology/approach – This study applies a quantitative research methodology. This research draws on a sample of 103 FPFs that have been selected from a population of 345 FPFs located in Kampala district. Hypothesis testing was done using Smart PLS version 3. Findings – Asset specificity has a significant positive relationship with SCI, and firm adaptability partially mediates this relationship. Also, there is a full mediation impact of firm adaptability on the relationship between relational governance and SCI. Research limitations/implications – This study focused on perceptual measures to get responses from managers on the level of integration with key suppliers and customers, yet firms deal with a number of suppliers and customers. Originality/value – This study contributes to existing literature on SCI by applying the transaction cost theory. The study focuses on the influence of asset specificity, relational governance and firm adaptability on SCI in the food processing sector. Literature on relational governance in supply chain using the transaction cost theory remains scanty. Few studies have also focused on firm adaptability as a mediator in the FPS with specific focus on Uganda, yet the sector is highly faced with uncertain events. The uncertain events in the sector and in developing countries call for adaptive strategies. Additionally, this study is the first to use firm adaptability to mediate the influence of asset specificity and relational governance on SCI more so in a developing country like Uganda where the FPS is one of the most important in the economy.

Digital devices have revolutionized customer shopping behavior, giving rise to omni-channel retailing. Omni-channel retailing seamlessly integrates physical and digital channels, touchpoints, and supply chain operations. Owing to the rapidly evolving technology landscape, retailers struggle to discern the right investment approach to digitally transform their supply chains. Despite the widespread assumption that investment in supply chain integration (SCI) is vital for omni-channel retailing, empirical studies investigating the underlying mechanisms behind this process are limited. This research seeks to understand how and why investment ability catalyzes omni-channel SCI. Utilizing a two-phase abductive qualitative research design, Phase 1 involved 17 semi-structured interviews with senior managers from nine large South African omni-channel retailers. In Phase 2, content analysis of 40 integrated annual reports (IARs) from omni-channel retailers was conducted. This study identifies two crucial investment trade-off decisions that drive omni-channel SCI: financial and human resources. This demonstrates that strategically aligned investment ability fosters scalability and agility, playing a catalytic role in omni-channel SCI. The findings contribute valuable insights into omni-channel retailing and supply chain literature, providing practical guidance for managers navigating the complexities of investing in omni-channel SCI initiatives. These investment guidelines could accelerate the digital transformation and SCI processes for omni-channel retailers.

This study identifies and proposes a framework that provides insights into supply chain integration (SCI) and supplies chain sustainability (SCS) relationships. Drawing on dynamic capability theory, stakeholder theory, and contingency theory, it analyses primary qualitative data obtained by interviewing managers and executives and conducting observations, as well as secondary data within leading pharmaceutical companies, national pharmaceutical institutions, and regulators in the UK and Ghana. The study illustrates how and why (i) SCS can be achieved through SCI, and (ii) identifies the internal and external contextual factors (IECFs) that influence the relationship between SCI and SCS, that is, 'external uncertainty (EU)', 'patient satisfaction', and 'leadership style'. The contribution of the paper lies in (i) providing an in-depth understanding of the IECFs affecting supply chains' sustainability performance, and (ii) proposing a framework that extrapolates the IECFs influencing the relationship between SCI and SCS for both developed and developing country contexts. Practitioners are provided with guidance on how to effectively and efficiently operationalise SCI to achieve SCS whilst managing the effects of the IECFs on supply chain activities. China's retail industry has vigorously developed an omni-channel retail strategy in the last few years. However, quantitative research on this development remains relatively scarce. This article addresses this by building a theoretical model of the relationships between internal supply chain integration, external supply chain integration and financial performance in omni-channel retailing and then verifies it by using a structural equation model to analyze 356 omni-channel retailers. The results show that in the case of omni-channel retailers, the supply chain's internal information integration has a significant positive impact on its external information integration and that the supply chain's internal process and internal organization integration significantly positively impact its external process and external organization integration. And it also shows the supply chain's external information integration and external organization integration positively impact omni-channel retailers' financial performance. However, the supply chain's external process integration is not found to have the same effect on financial performance. This study addresses a theoretical gap in the research on the impact of supply chain integration on firm performance in omni-channel retailing. We develop and test a moderated mediation model to explain how management accounting systems impact supply chain integration and firm performance, and how perceived environmental uncertainty influences these relationships. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to analyze the survey data from 158 supply chain firms in Vietnam. Results indicate that the use of management accounting systems increases the extent of supply chain integration, which in turn enhances firm performance. Furthermore, perceived environmental uncertainty moderates the positive associations between the use of management accounting systems, supply chain integration, and firm performance. This study makes several contributions to existing literature. First, it elucidates the role of supply chain integration in promoting partner integration in the Vietnamese context. Second, it reveals the performance implications of the interaction between management accounting systems and supply chain integration. Our findings have important implications for supply chain management because they emphasize the need to develop effective management accounting systems and supply chain integration strategies in the context of environmental uncertainty. Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of two characteristics of supply chain management (SCM) (resilience and integration) on new product performance (NPP) via the mediation of marketing innovation orientation. Design/methodology/approach: This study was designed by the quantitative method, and the research model was developed based on the resource-based view (RBV) theory of 211 managers from Israeli firms using SmartPls3 software. Findings: The main finding that emerges from this study is that marketing innovation orientation serves as a full mediator in the relationship between supply chain resilience (SCR) and NPP as well as in the relationship between supply chain integration (SCI) and NPP. Thus, companies that wish to achieve a competitive advantage over their rivals should improve and strengthen their marketing innovation orientation. By doing so, they enhance the relationship between SCM and NPP. Practical implications: The findings provide an applicable guideline for marketing managers. Managers should be ready to adapt to customers' demands, environmental changes and, most importantly, disruptive events in a dynamic environment. Originality/value: The current study sheds light on the mechanism for NPP via integrating suppliers, customers and the organization. Companies, in emerging economies and beyond, struggle to develop integration mechanisms that deliver supply chain performance and competitive advantages. Those striving for organizational performance by streamlining supply chain processes must assess the challenges and benefits of employing technologies for supply chain integration. This study's objective is to analyze the supply chain integration antecedents required to enable supply chain performance, competitive advantages, and organization performance. Although prior research indicates that the Internet of Things (IoT), as one of the enabling technologies, plays an instrumental role in enhancing organization performance through supply chain integration, no empirical tests have been performed before. Therefore, this study examines the direct and indirect effects of the IoT's impact on organizational performance through different mediating variables—supply chain integration, supply chain performance, and competitive advantages. This study uses survey data from Saudi Arabian companies that adopted IoT-based applications in their supply chains. The results from partial least squares structural equation modeling indicate that the benefits and challenges of IoT adoption significantly affect supply chain integration. Moreover, supply chain integration partially mediates the relationship between IoT, supply chain performance, and competitive advantages while supply chain performance and competitive advantages mediate the relationship between supply chain integration and organization performance. This study offers theoretical implications regarding how dynamic capabilities are associated with supply chain integration and how they influence organizational performance; it also reveals valuable managerial insights. This paper analyzes from the perspective of Service‐Dominant Logic how value is generated through supply chain integration. The inclusion of the Service‐Dominant Logic together with the Transaction Costs Economy and the Resource Based View allows exploring ways of explaining the generation of value that have been seldom studied. In particular, the role of specific resources, governance form, and information sharing are analyzed in the Spanish mining and manufacture of nonmetallic mineral products industry. The hypotheses generated are tested with structural equation modeling. The sample size was 276 cases. The findings support the importance of governance form and relation‐specific resources as operant resources, as well as the importance of the latter in amplifying the governance form's effect. Five operant resources are identified: information sharing, governance form, relation‐specific resources, trust, and relational commitment. These resources outline three ways of value generation. Many antecedents identified as essential to supply chain resilience (SCR) are often studied independently, without considering their synergistic effects. Based on a case study and resource orchestration theory, this article focuses on configurations of different antecedents regarding supply chain integration and big data analytics capability to develop proactive and reactive SCR. Using survey data from 277 Chinese manufacturing firms, we consider three dimensions of supply chain integration, information integration, operational integration and relational integration, and three dimensions of big data analytics capability, technical skills, managerial skills and data driven‐decision culture, and conduct fuzzy‐set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to explore antecedent configurations generating high proactive and reactive SCR. We find that multiple antecedent configurations can achieve high SCR and configurations for high proactive and reactive SCR are not identical, which may involve alternative effects across different antecedents. We further implement propensity score matching analysis and reveal that firms following these configurations for high SCR also have better economic and operational performance. Moreover, we check the robustness of findings by using secondary data and attributes analysis with machine learning. This article complements and extends existing SCR literature from the configurational perspective and provides practical insights for managers to build SCR. Highlights: Firms should be aware that configurations of various antecedents rather than a single antecedent determine SCR.No single antecedent is necessary for high SCR and there are alternative configurations resulting in high proactive or reactive SCR; thus, when certain specific capabilities are lacking, firms should properly orchestrate other capabilities for achieving high SCR.Antecedent configurations in building proactive and reactive SCR are not identical; thus, firms sometimes need to adjust solutions for different SCR strategies. This study aims to examine the effect of supply chain risk on supply chain resilience through the mediation of supply chain integration. A sample was collected by purposive sampling, and the data was gathered by using an online survey for three company sectors: manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain management in Java, Indonesia. The data were analyzed with Analysis of Moment Structure structural equation modeling (AMOS-SEM) using AMOS-24. The Result shows that SCR has impact to 3 dimension of integration but only Internal integration impact positively to SCRE whereas supplier and customer integration have not any impact on SCRE. Despite that, SCR still has an effect on SCRE, mediated by SCI. It’s suggest to improve the collaboration and coordination between Supplier and Customer Integration for Resilience of supply chain.

Supply Chain Integration (SCI) has attracted increasing attention in Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) literature as it could be a very useful tool for risk mitigation. At the same time, companies in several sectors are experiencing a transition towards more circular and sustainable business models, which poses new challenges and risks for firms. Despite the relevance of integrative practices in supply chains to deal with risks and uncertainties, evidence about the role of SCI for dealing with risks of Circular Economy (CE) is still lacking. The focus of this paper is on the causal link between SCI and SCRM in a circular economy context, with the main aim of investigating the effects of SCI and SCRM practices combined with CE on company performance. For this research, a multiple case-study approach was adopted involving several companies at different levels in the furniture industry. The results are expected to guide companies in their transition towards CE business models, being able to better deal with CE risks through integrative practices and obtaining an overall increase of efficiency, particularly in costs, due to the optimization and green use of waste materials. Operational efficiency is essential for optimizing resource utilization and streamlining processes, resulting in cost savings and increased productivity. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of different drivers on the operational excellence of organisations in Saudi Arabia. The study examined the mediating role of supply chain integration and digital technology adoptability. Data were collected from 290 employees across multiple departments in various organisations in Saudi Arabia. The researchers utilised a self-administered questionnaire, a cross-sectional research design, and a quantitative research approach. The study found that supply chain integration and digital technology adaptability had a significant impact on sustainable operational excellence. The study found significant effects of Eco-innovation, control operations process optimisation systems, and operations risk management systems on supply chain integration. This research also found no significant influence of Eco-innovation and process operations management systems on digital adaptability. In addition, the results revealed that supply chain integration and digital technology adaptability act as significant mediators between various factors and operational excellence. The study provides theoretical insight by emphasising the significance of key drivers of operational excellence, such as sustainability, eco-innovation, risk management, and process optimisation. Further, the study illustrates the limited impact of traditional production strategies. The study highlights the practical importance of organisations prioritising certain factors to improve operational performance. These assets, however, are neither easily re‐deployable to other uses nor quickly adjustable, preventing firms from flexibly matching supply and demand. Second, these firms have pursued global supply chain integration by acquiring similar firms or firms in their upstream or downstream supply chain to diversify into other supply chain activities. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some firms have successfully pursued these strategies, but others have failed, eventually exiting the market. We posit that one explanation for this difference may be how effectively these firms manage their assets relative to their supply chain integration activities. We test this proposition by drawing from resource‐based theory and transaction cost economics and using longitudinal data for 148 maritime shipping firms. We also test post hoc whether typically acquired supply chain activities are beneficial. Goal: The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating role of supply chain integration for Supply chain risks heading toward organizational performance. This study is mainly focused on the dairy sector of emerging economies. Design / Methodology / Approach: This is quantitative research, in which a multi-item scale web-based survey was conducted to collect primary data. 407 stakeholders of the dairy industry, specifically the customers and the ones dealing with supply chain operations and the planning and integration department were investigated. Confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency were applied to test the reliability and fitness of the measurement model and structural equation modeling-SEM is used to test the proposed hypotheses. Results: The results suggest that in the dairy sector, both customer and supplier risks, act as barriers to implementing (SCI) supply chain integration and also negatively influence (OP) organizational performance. However, supplier risks, belonging to the dairy industry of an agricultural-based country like Pakistan, have a comparatively less negative impact on organizational performance as compared to customer risk, conversely, supply chain integration helps the organization to achieve better performance. The integration indeed acts as a strong mediator in reducing the negative impact of supply chain risk. Limitations of the investigation: This study utilizes cross-sectional data, which restricts the researchers to depict the entire manifestation of (SCR) supply chain risk, supply chain integration, and organization performance, for businesses operating in the dairy sector of a developing economy, like Pakistan. Practical implications: This study helps managers to use SCI as a tool to reduce the impact of supply chain risk i.e. supplier risk and customer risk on organizational performance. Also, this study explains the importance of customer risk as compared to supplier risk associated with perishable products. Originality/Value: This paper enriches the literature in an evolving area of SCI and SCR, by investigating the mediating role of SCI. Two key risks i.e. supplier risk and customer risk associated with the supply chain network of dairy sector organizations are addressed, along with the mediating ability of supply chain integration to improve firm performance is investigated. In the context of the rapidly evolving landscape shaped by the increased prevalence of digital technologies and the transformative dynamics of supply chains in the post-COVID-19 era, this research seeks to address a crucial gap by examining the mediating role played by supply chain integration and efficiency. The primary aim is to provide a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of how digitalization influences networks of supply chain performance. Moreover, we delve into the moderating impact of supply chain dynamism on shaping this association. Through a simple random sampling technique, survey data were collected from 293 Turkish manufacturing firms via an online survey and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The findings underscore that digitalization significantly enhances supply chain integration and efficiency, thereby contributing to improved supply chain performance. Notably, supply chain integration and efficiency were identified as key mediators in the relationship between digitalization and supply chain performance. Furthermore, we investigate the moderating effect of supply chain dynamism, revealing its positive influence on the association between digitalization and supply chain integration. Rooted in key theories such as the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities, this study provides valuable insights by unraveling the intricate processes through which digitalization's impact is channeled in the post-COVID-19 era.
