This is a collection of thoughts about and for Anne Turvey, written by current members of the English Education Team at the Institute of Education. To that extent, we are all her intellectual and professional heirs, although we stand in a variety of relations to her, and know her variously as PGCE and MA tutor, colleague, mentor and friend. It was one of Anne's superpowers to be able to blur the edges of such roles, often to collapse them altogether and her ability to fuse the social and the academic is a strong theme. We examine how the FutureCoast storytelling game creates an accessible, online space to explore the climate problem and its impacts, as well as to glean insights regarding player perceptions. Through FutureCoast, players imagine a climate-changed future by creating stories about an altered world. A total of 251 voicemail responses generated from game participants recruited through social media and other channels were coded and analyzed. Subject engagement with the storytelling game provided valuable data about climate change understanding, as well as rich, player-created narratives that document the complexity of public thinking about climate-changed futures. Commonly occurring themes include Adaptation, Challenge, Technology, Weather, Governance and Policy, and Food.FutureCoast participants perceived optimistic scenarios for technology, energy and mitigation, and pessimistic scenarios for weather, food, water and adaptation. From FutureCoast stories, we gain an understanding of public perceptions toward climate issues that can help communicators develop more informed and effective climate change communication strategies. Key policy highlights Through playful approaches, such as FutureCoast, we can gain an understanding of public perceptions toward climate issues that can help communicators develop more informed and effective climate change communication strategies. Using novel approaches such as games to understand perceptions can elicit information from people who would otherwise not engage in surveys or other research methods. An innovation of the FutureCoast approach is its ability to produce rich, player-created narratives, which can be analyzed to uncover complex thinking about climate-changed futures. Responses may reveal where the public identifies and voices emerging issues earlier than experts. Identifying optimistic and pessimistic trends around climate issues gives communicators the opportunity to re-frame negative climate perceptions toward actions and solutions, thus empowering their audiences with information that can elicit climate action. In putting posthuman theories to work, we shift our gaze beyond the human in two early education classrooms to imagine walls as palimpsests. By thinking-with palimpsests, we imagine walls as multi-layered agentic objects that do more than hold shifting configurations of documentation. Thinking-with walls as palimpsests enables us to make-sense of walls in relation to the past and present through multiple materialities, spaces and times. With this experimental and playful writing, we story wall encounters through stretching our attention to the everydayness of the human-non-human-more-than-human life of walls. In offering up two wall stories, we move our gaze to zoom in and out of walls' mundanities to materialize encounters. Other kinds of knowledge can be made and remade with different kinds of noticing that take seriously non-human mundanities of time, space and matter with wall storyings. Taking a seriously playful, and speculative, approach we leave our musings of the wall stories unfinished so that new knowledge, and unthought thoughts can be made. The ecosystem system services framework has potential to help clarify wildlife management challenges at the single species scale, but existing methods struggle to capture the complex values and tradeoffs at play in human–wildlife interactions. We worked with community scientists to gather and use stories (n = 150) as a source of ecosystem services data about living alongside eastern coyotes (Canis latrans var) in rural Vermont, United States. Our a priori ecosystem service assessment showed that human–coyote interactions can have simultaneous positive and negative human well‐being impacts at both the sample scale and for individual interviewees. Our research identified emergent themes that lent insight into how interviewees justified different kinds of relationships with coyotes. We applied a tradeoffs lens to evaluate three policy options based on their potential to mitigate ecosystem disservices and maximize ecosystem services from human–coyote interactions. We found that ecosystem services assessment rooted in a dataset of stories revealed policy‐relevant understanding of value conflicts and alignments at the sample scale without overshadowing the nuances of individual interviewees' experiences. In this paper, we seek to intervene in the proposition that there are recognisable or abstract-able modes of doing qualitative writing, and instead affirm that writing from a feminist scholarly perspective is often an embodied, domestic, haptic and serendipitous gesture. Occurring in in-between spaces and moments, in which personal and professional life frequently meld, with porous boundaries, our writing practices appear to talk back rhetorically to the notion of writing qualitatively. What are the qualities of qualitative writing? Within education (our field) quality can seem to masquerade as a measurable, generalizable thing, implying a 'gold standard' or that different writing practices or products can or should be compared or ranked. For us, writing is frequently encountered as serendipitous, messy and intricately entwined with daily life at numerous scales. This is not to suggest that writing magically takes shape, but rather it is un-abstract-able from daily routines, situations and energies at local and global scales. In the middle of these situations, writing happens when it takes precedence, at whatever cost that might be to bodies, relationships and domestic schedules. Working with a range of feminist philosophers, we draw the temporal, situated, mattering of writing into focus. This paper engages in non-linear story-telling about the processes of our collaborative writing of this paper. We are particularly inspired by Stewart's (2007:75) approach to writing to convey moments of ordinary life, which she describes as 'a circuit that is always tuned into some little something, somewhere. A mode of attending to the possible and the threatening'. We dwell upon the somethings and the somewheres as a means to draw out the temporal passing by of life in all its messiness, as a piece of writing comes together, tracing moments of shimmering intensity and mundane frustration and distraction throughout the work. This paper discusses The Cannibal and I Killed Eighteen, KTN's two documentary Case Files that profile Geoffrey Matheri and Philip Onyancha's confessions as serial killers. With the hindsight that documentaries generally document true crime stories, the discussion closely follows the journalist's narration vis-à-vis the victims' confessions, truths, and evidences and it attempts a closure to Dennis Onsarigo's observation that each of the two cases is still a case open. The study is informed by two observations; first, despite the victims' glaring testimonies of their macabre killings, both were jailed for the lesser allegations of attempted rape crimes and assaults, and second, though Onyancha publicly confessed to have murdered eighteen, he still contemplates writing a book 'The Untold Story' of which he says the book will allow Kenyans to know the truth, Guided by Narrative Theories, this study activates 'invisible' histories and 'inaudible' stories and it considers how the aesthetic qualities of the documentary and production process place the works between their actuality and the supposed reality in the outside world. The term 'magic realism' extensively refers to the style of writing or technique that includes magical an d supernatural events narrated realistically. This research investigates the elements of magic realism in Nick Joaquin's select short stories, The Mass of St. Sylvestre, Dona Jeronima, and May Day Eve, as juxtaposed with reality, specifically on the magic realism and realities, cultural milieu, and Filipino psyche. The assumption is supported by the literary theories of Mary Ann Cain's Formalism Theory, Homi K. Bhaba's Postcolonialism Theory, and Aristotle's Mimetic Theory. This research uses qualitative methods and discourse analysis. The findings of this study demonstrate that the existence of magic realism juxtaposes with the realities, the cultural milieu displays the different Filipino culture and identity, and the Filipino psyche is depicted in the other short stories. Based on the findings of this research, it has been found that the elements of magic realism and realities are revealed in Nick Joaquin's selected Philippine short fiction, namely, The Mass of St. Sylvestre, Dona Jeronima, and May Day Eve. In the future, a more in-depth and advanced study focusing on a unified theme of the plot, characterization, and setting could be done to reveal the prevalence of magic realism as juxtaposed with reality. In this article, we enact a partial cartographic storying of reconceptualist turns in our work. We do this by situating ourselves in relation to each other and our work across time as a mode of tracing the (situated) possibilities that these turns have enacted for children-in-relation with worlds. In enacting this dialogic and cartographic storying, we collaborate in a way that is inspired by Black methodologies. This means that we intentionally think with liberatory possibilities in our work in early childhood education research and practice across modalities, disciplines, temporalities and geographies. Importantly, like Black methodologies this co-theorizing is also ontological; it is inseparable from our own relational becomings. Following an anticolonial ethos, we are interested in the liberatory potentials of our work, at multiple scales and in different but specific places. We attempt to enact the difficult task of (re)storying our childhood education research and practice in ways that pay attention to the interconnected presences and effects of white supremacy, human supremacy and colonialism, while simultaneously refusing to reinscribe a flattened damage-centred understanding of children, educators and their relational worlds. This article reflects on the assumptions we make in the design of faculty and graduate student orientations and on the implementation of redesigned orientations that foreground participant narrative. When educational developers purposefully make space for participant stories at their orientations, it is a way not only to share power with graduate students and faculty but also to create a more inclusive environment and sense of belonging. We offer a reflection on educational developer and participant experiences of small narrative interventions in graduate student and faculty orientations at our university in 2021. We find that through foregrounding story sharing we were able to shift from assimilation to acculturation by including, cultivating, and honoring diverse views, creating community, and promoting agency. This is an epilogue to the collection of essays devoted to Indigenous Americans and the Atlantic World. It focuses on two core arguments found in the papers featured in the forum. The first is the extraordinary mobility of Native people in the Atlantic world – Native people and stories span a vast geographical and temporal span. The second is the bare and scattered archival fragments that are often the only records of these peoples' complicated lives – Native people and stories are thus hard to find and reconstruct. This tension between Native peoples' impressive mobility and their fragmented archival footprint opens-up larger questions about how Indigenous Americans reshaped Atlantic histories and why Atlantic histories must center Indigenous Americans. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the impact of the lexico-phonological diglossic distance of story reading (a scaffolded storybook intervention, informed by Vygotsky's theory of scaffolding and fading) on Arabic-speaking preschool children's comprehension and receptive and productive vocabulary. Method: The participants were 139 Israeli-Palestinian kindergartners: 71 composed an intervention group and 68 composed a comparison group. The intervention group heard stories gradually from the SpA, identical, cognate, and unique word forms, whereas the comparison group heard traditional stories unrelated to their lexico-phonological distances. Story 1 was read in unique spoken Arabic (SpA) form, stories 2 and 3 were read in 58 and 45% identical and cognate word forms, respectively, and story 4 was read in 70% unique word forms. Results: The results clearly showed that children's vocabulary and story understanding was significantly higher after the intervention, especially noticeable in stories that contained a higher proportion of Standard Arabic (StA). Interestingly, the stories told entirely in Spoken Arabic (SpA) were the most effective, yielding the highest scores in both comprehension and vocabulary. Stories that mixed different word forms also performed well, though not as strongly as the SpA stories, while those solely in StA were the least effective. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest that scaffolded storybook intervention may enhance the receptive vocabulary and comprehension skills of children. This study shows that, in the context of diglossia, stories should be read to children systematically and gradually according to the lexical-phonological distance of words in the stories. Storytelling is known to positively affect resilience, providing opportunities to share and develop narratives that help make sense of difficult experiences, find meaning in them, and building beliefs around our capacity to adapt well to challenging experiences. Aim: The aim of this review is to synthesize peer‐reviewed studies on the impact of storytelling interventions in developing resilience in children. Method: The review adhered to the updated PRISMA 2020 guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022365474). We conducted searches in 12 databases with search strings comprising of concepts regarding storytelling, resilience and children. Results: The review included 11 studies published between 2012 and 2022. The narrative synthesis of the studies indicates that storytelling interventions enhanced psychological resilience in children. Discussion: Storytelling‐based interventions in school settings with participatory approaches using cultural stories, and positive psychology‐based interventions were effective and feasible. Implications for Practice: This review has scope for informing future interventions with children, especially those who live in marginalized communities in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). In the last decade, storytelling has been popularised as a method for societal sustainability transformations. With this growing popularity, there has also been a rapid increase in those identifying as storytellers. Perhaps because storytelling for sustainability has an innocent ring to it, it has not yet been studied from a power perspective. However, as it is fast-spreading and has explicit change purposes, it is important to clarify assumptions about knowledge, power and change. This article offers a first step towards understanding and evaluating the wide variety of applications behind the label of storytelling for sustainability. We perform a frame analysis of how storytellers describe their storytelling for sustainability. Our findings demonstrate that the label of storytelling for sustainability encompasses fundamentally different ideas about whose knowledge counts. In the Netherlands, there was always a clear distinction between Protestant and Catholic folklore. That is visible in witchcraft accusations, but it is also visible in ghost lore. This lore is here reconstructed applying a not always used source, to wit newspaper articles. Here, I will discuss how accounts of hoaxing on the one hand and misinterpreted experiences on the other, help to understand how, in this case people in the Netherlands of roughly a century to a century and a half ago, realized their imagination of the dead. Not in a paradisical kind of afterlife, or as rotten corpses in the ground, but as specific entities which permeated the boundaries between the living and the dead. These newspaper reports are confronted with the stories (or jokes) collected by folklorists. I will also discuss content, with a special focus on the phenomenon of the hoax. Hoaxsters, however, allow the researcher to engage with an extra dimension in the encounter, between the ghost and the observer there is now a third party interacting with both. (How this involves the researcher, is always a problem in historical research.) Was there an overall ghost picture? What was the reaction of bystanders? Moreover, this essay will move between story and history, between the past as it was experienced and as it was related to contemporaries, between 'fact' and 'fiction' to give it another name. Ali Samadov has a special place in the development of Azerbaijani children's prose. In general, the 60s of the twentieth century are characterized as a special stage in literary and theoretical thought. There are good reasons for this and it is not only caused by the revival in Azerbaijan. It is mostly connected to the awakenings and mobility that took place in the Soviet space, as well as in the European environment. This period, which is characterized by the name "prose of the sixties" or "generation of the sixties", revives the same imagination and content in all parameters. The peculiarity of poetry, prose, dramaturgy, publicism, and literary criticism at this stage is specified by the connection to the mobility and awakening of national thought, archaic memory as a trend. In this process, children's literature is also characterized by the remarkable aspects of unique thinking models, ways of understanding and presenting life. Representatives of the older generation, as well as an important part of the artists who entered great literature in the 60s, played an active role in creating airplane literature. M. Rzaguluzade, M. Living simultaneously in worlds of subsurface darkness and cosmic light, plants transfer knowledge across time and place thresholds. They communicate through their interactions in plain sight and beyond view, often escaping the reaches of human imagination. Medicinal plants, in particular, offer the intimacy of embodied sensory knowledge. As we consume them, ecosystem functions are reenacted inside our bodies through physiological actions. Drawing on botanically centered practices incorporating field work, herbalism, and writing, this project expands creative methods within geography. Through botanical stories, I build on established knowledge adding insights and interpretations derived from ecological observations and botanical medicine practices. These stories feature ecologically and culturally important species that serve as guides for navigating emerging and ongoing environmental and social issues. Through interconnectivity with Betony (Pedicularis spp.), Globemallow (Sphaeralcea spp.), and Vervain (Verbena spp.), I explore plant perspectives for living relationally with environmental change. This study examines the phases and dynamics of workplace bullying (WB) as a social positioning phenomenon within moral orders. Applying the positioning theory (PT) and the relational model of WB, the study analyses 136 written online stories of WB, utilizing narrative analysis of positioning in self-other relationships. The findings, limited to the perspective of the bullied (targets), identify four distinct storylines of WB that involve different forms of positioning: (1) the loss of health and ability to work, (2) passive acceptance of bullying, (3) unresolved conflict, and (4) active opponent in bullying. These findings shed light on the development and variations in WB storylines regarding the target, perpetrator, and work community, with a focus on the organizational and interpersonal power dynamics associated with WB. Research has shown that Physical Education (PE) is a white, male, and able body-dominated profession, particularly in Spain. When some female pre-service PE teachers, who had a difficult relationship with their bodies and sports abilities, enrol in such a degree, some of these problematic relations come to light. Participants for this study were four female pre-service teachers who self-identified as lesbian, anorexic, visually impaired, and big respectively. Data were collected through participant-produced texts, graphical representations, and interviews. The authors then reconstructed the participants' stories which are presented in the form of narratives. The conceptual tool of embodying norm-criticality helped us to highlight the importance of critical reflection about own beliefs, past experiences and understandings, and their influence on pedagogical practices in PE. This study contributes to the push towards a change of the stereotypical beliefs of what a PE teacher should be or look like, and in this way, emphasises the vast benefits of diversifying PE teachers' beliefs and understandings. Many scholars have cautioned that the use of Western research methods is problematic in studies with Indigenous communities given colonialist histories that have exploited Indigenous populations. One solution has been to utilize a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach to enhance equity in research partnerships. Employing a CBPR approach, however, does not necessitate the inclusion of Indigenous Research Methods, an additional step that can further benefit studies with their explicit alignment with Indigenous worldviews and values. In a CBPR project aiming to understand Indigenous harm reduction clients' perspectives of barriers and facilitators to opioid use disorder treatment, our research group assembled a multidisciplinary qualitative data analysis team that included diverse tribal community members and academics. Sparse literature was available to guide the use of Indigenous Research Methods for the qualitative data analysis phase of the research. To address this gap, the aims of this process paper are: (1) to describe the implementation of the Collaborative Story Analysis method, and (2) in the Indigenous tradition of honoring and sharing stories, describe our analysis team's experiences and perceptions of implementing this Indigenous Research Method. Through a series of process discussions, the analysis team found that applying the Collaborative Story Analysis method: (1) honored relationships and story, (2) strengthened the depth of analysis, and (3) exhibited tensions when working in a dominant Western culture. Through sharing our team's experiences, the aspiration is that others can use these insights in their own consideration and implementation of an Indigenous Research Method for qualitative data analysis.

Drawing upon the Schiffrin’s analytical model of footing, positioning, and stances as mechanisms for reframing and re-voicing experiences, this study (as a qualitative approach) investigates the contextualization of an event through the narration of stories in the practical domain of political discourse, specifically presidential speeches. To accomplish this goal, a discourse analysis is conducted on four stories in four political speeches delivered by Barack Obama, the former president of the United States to identify the evolution in their structural composition. The model of attitudinal stance proposed by Qaiwer is integrated into the analysis. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the concept of hegemony seeking within the framework of narrative-based discourse analysis. The focus is on the correlation between the narrative and the formation of attitudes, rather than on the narrative itself. The analysis reveals variations in the four recounted versions presented by Obama in different contexts. These noticeable changes and discrepancies may be attributed to the specific objectives of each speech, whether focused on self/other campaigning or policy advocacy.

On arrival in a host country, asylum‐seeking children face uncertainty and stress that may compound past traumatic experiences of war and violence. This article is based on a participatory action research project, Welcome Haven, that aims to promote the wellbeing and mental health of asylum‐seeking families in Montreal, Canada, through psychosocial workshops. Since 2023, our interdisciplinary team has conducted arts‐based workshops to support asylum‐seeking children lodged in hotels that function as temporary accommodations, funded by the federal government. This study examines the drawings and narratives of participating children (ages 5–17) to understand how children communicate and make sense of their experiences through artmaking. Following a participatory action research framework using arts‐based approaches, we use narrative and thematic analysis to analyze our (a) ethnographic field notes, (b) notes from our intervention team meetings, which functioned as peer supervision for facilitators, and (c) photographs of children’s artwork. Our findings suggest that children use drawings to share and externalize their personal stories and to express fears and hopes for the future. Importantly, children’s expression happened not only on the page and through stories, but in the space between facilitators and children, and in their manner of sharing or protecting their art. The challenges of conducting research and creating therapeutic alliances in these spaces are explored. This research has important implications for understanding children affected by war and those in humanitarian crisis settings, including reception centers and shelters in high‐income countries.

On the island of Fuvahmulah, Maldives, community members have learned to co-exist with resident tiger sharks. Rapidly becoming a premier destination for shark tourism, Fuvahmulah demonstrates a novel circumstance for how this often-polarizing industry can both bolster the local economy and strengthen shark conservation efforts. Focusing on personal storytelling, this project delivers a 5-part video series and interactive website featuring video portraitures of locals involved in and impacted by the industry. The impact of human-induced climate change poses a significant danger to both the natural environment and societies worldwide. Despite being widely acknowledged, the situation persists and continues to deteriorate. Communicating this issue beyond the scientific community is a complex and difficult endeavor. Climate change is unfolding on a time scale that is difficult for humans to grasp and comprehend. My Capstone project is an example of using storytelling, rather than scientific results, to create a bridge that connects people to the world of climate change science and those who dedicate themselves to its pursuit. Storytelling has the power to invoke emotions, increase knowledge, and inspire action. It serves as a vital method of passing down wisdom from one generation to the next. By embracing storytelling across generations, we can preserve a baseline of what is considered normal and prevent it from shifting. My short film, "Climate Stories From Generations of Changemakers”, shares the personal stories and emotions of young students and senior professors at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, whose work is highly impacted by climate change. Through a series of interviews and conversations, the film offers glimpses into the life stories of these changemakers, showcasing their actions and hoping to inspire others to take action as well. Urban households are an intimate nexus of food and food waste, connecting people to challenges of sustainability and inequality, in wider food systems. Household food waste (HFW) studies, including those which explored consumption practices during COVID-19, have tended to emphasize the reduction in food waste as part of behaviour change. In 2018/19 an exploratory, interdisciplinary, mixed method study was conducted of HFW perceptions and practices of urban residents in The Hague (Netherlands) with purposeful sampling (n = 19), speaking either Dutch, English or Arabic. Participants took photographs of their HFW for photovoice interviews and focus group HFW stories. The research provided a space for participants to become self-aware of the explicit and implicit understanding of their food practices and their household food waste and its related practices (i.e. food-related packaging). This finding resonated across all hierarchical levels of waste management from best practices, such as, reduction to mixed waste least preferred options. Performing HFW appears to lack comprehensive ecological contextualisation as per the latter part of the urban food system. Dutch and English-speaking focus groups seemed mostly unaware of ‘what happened next’ to their disposed HFW and food-related packaging, whilst the Arabic speaking focus group appeared more comprehensively ecosystem attuned. Given the impetus to a zero-waste more sustainable lifestyle, the transitory implications of knowing more explicitly about ‘what happens next’ to different forms of urban HFW disposal, once it is ‘out of sight’, could potentially offer insights into reconfigured routine HFW performance and therefore require further research.

CHIME was initially developed through analysis of experiences of people mainly with psychosis, but it might also be valid for investigating recovery in mood-related, autism and other diagnoses.To examine whether personal recovery is transdiagnostic by studying narrative experiences in several diagnostic groups.Thirty recovery narratives, retrieved from “Psychiatry Story Bank” (PSB) in the Netherlands, were analyzed by three coders using CHIME as a deductive framework. New codes were assigned using an inductive approach and member checks were performed after consensus was reached.All five CHIME dimensions were richly reported in the narratives, independent of diagnosis. Seven new domains were identified, such as “acknowledgement by diagnosis” and “gaining self-insight”. These new domains were evaluated to fit well as subdomains within the original CHIME framework. On average, 54.2% of all narrative content was classified as experienced difficulties.Recovery stories from different diagnostic perspectives fit well into the CHIME framework, implying that personal recovery is a transdiagnostic concept. The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of prison residents' songwriting experiences while engaged in Documentary Songwriters (DocSong) collaborative songwriting pedagogy. The research implemented a qualitative, case study portraiture design inside a prison in which the experiences of an individual 'story source' and group were explored. Key themes originated from the observational, spoken, audio-recorded and sung data procured from a week-long DocSong workshop. The songwriting participants and facilitator created a community that transformed the prison space into an environment in which the residents experienced individual actualization and collective liberation and liberated and restorative music creativity. The songwriting community members shared personal narratives that were replete with emotion, while also demonstrating and supporting each other's emotional vulnerability and resilience. The group collaboratively created songs from spoken word using the DocSong approach, forming a strong emotional bond throughout the songwriting process. The individuals' interactions within the group suggested that confidence, patience and the willingness to share were also practised within the songwriting context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Integrated care is based around values of involvement and shared decision‐making, but these are not often reflected within planning and implementation. Barriers include continued emphasis on professional and managerial perspectives, skills gaps on how best to engage people and communities and insufficient investment in involvement infrastructure. Despite such challenges, people with lived experience have still led changes in policy and services. Design: Qualitative study involving 25 participants with lived experience from 12 countries. Participants shared their background stories and engaged in semistructured interviews relating to leadership identity, experience of influencing and personal learning. Transcripts were analysed through a framework approach informed by narrative principles. Results: Participants were motivated by their own experiences and a wish to improve care for future individuals and communities. Sharing their story was often the entry point for such influencing. Participants gained skills and confidence in story telling despite a lack of support and development. Many felt comfortable being described as a leader while others rejected this identity and preferred a different title. No common alternative term to leader was identified. Influencing services required considerable personal cost but also led to new networks, skills development and satisfaction when change was achieved. Discussion: Leadership within integrated care is often awarded to those with structural power related to management or clinical seniority. People with lived experience are though uniquely placed to identify what needs to change and can develop inspiring visions based around their personal stories. Claiming identity as leader can be challenging due to traditional notions of who is eligible to lead and unwillingness by professionals and managers to grant such identity. Conclusions: People with lived experience should be recognised as leaders of integrated care and have access to developmental opportunities and practical support to strengthen their skills, including that of storytelling. Patient and Public Contribution: The research was instigated on the request of a community advisory board of people with lived experience who shaped its design, contributed to the analysis and informed the conclusions and implications. The ways in which a coach conceptualises the needs of a client is central to the way the coaching journey unfolds. In other forms of applied psychology interventions are designed and delivered through the aid of a formulation which is widely recognised as a core competence for professional psychologists. Formulation can be understood as a unique form of storytelling and is a process through which a coach and client make sense of the client's aims and needs, identify the factors of influence, and use this conceptualisation to design a way forward. Although historically, the relevance of formulation to coaching has been underexplored, it is now gaining recognition as a distinct capability and one which may have particular value in contexts of complexity – the terrain that many coaches increasingly inhabit. Exploring formulation from the perspective of different disciplines, including the performing arts, as well as recent and current work within coaching, this article, based on a keynote presentation for the Division of Coaching Psychology's annual conference in June 2023, considers how embedding formulation in our coaching might enable us to enhance our practice, co-construct more effective stories about our clients' needs and contribute in new and ever more creative ways to meet the needs of our clients in a rapidly changing world. This paper presents a novel method based on the logic of the criminal approach, which we have called 'guest book investigation.' The aim is to uncover a unique, immersive story that can be used in people-centered heritage communication. We provide eight research steps (recording of clues, gathering of physical evidence, focused questioning, making enquiries of key informants, finding new evidence trails, data analysis, theoretical reconstruction, scene and incident reconstruction), with recommendations, to arm researchers for the investigation. The novelty of this method is its immersion in a rich pool of evidence and consequent potential to reveal unique, evocative cues which can be leveraged in brand architecture. While the contribution of this paper is mostly methodological, it also has practical value as a means to evoke the past and draw visitors into the atmosphere of a heritage attraction and – literally – to make its spirit of place tangible. We applied the guest book investigation method to the 1948–1956 entries in the guest book of the historic four-star Continental Hotel in Budapest, Hungary. This study explored and documented the child-rearing stories of parents of a child with Down syndrome in the city of Iloilo. The qualitative study examined child-rearing experiences of parents with children having Down Syndrome, utilizing narrative inquiry to gather stories and insights. One family was primarily chosen with additional participants for triangulation. Through interviews and observations, the study aimed to understand the challenges, successes, and parenting aspects involved. The study addressed specific questions regarding parental experiences, successes and challenges, parenting features, and lessons learned. The findings highlighted the initial difficulty parents faced upon learning about their child's condition, eventually accepting it and supporting their child to overcome challenges. Successes included fostering understanding and patience, leading to the child's acceptance and growth. However, challenges such as caregiving responsibilities, illness, and financial strain were evident, aligning with existing research. Parenting aspects revealed a positive parenting style, balancing guidance and discipline while respecting the child's autonomy. This approach facilitated the child's development and reduced the severity of disability symptoms over time. Key lessons learned by parents included accepting their child's condition, improving parenting skills through acceptance, and realizing the importance of unconditional love and guidance in raising a child with special needs. Overall, the study shed light on the complex experiences of parents raising children with Down Syndrome, emphasizing the importance of acceptance, support, and positive parenting in promoting the child's well-being and development. This article considers some of the opportunities increased visitation to recreational areas presents in terms of engaging residents and visitors with local heritage in the form of Historic Environment Records (HERs). There are countless potential 'hidden stories' related to cultural heritage sites and artefacts within palimpsest landscapes. These sites and artefacts present opportunities for alternative narratives of place to be negotiated, creating links to the past in the present, and between the exotic and the familiar. The changing approach to landscape practices resulting from COVID-19 restrictions presents new opportunities to engage people with these hidden stories, linking places near with far-off lands across time and space. It also encourages new connections with place that have the potential to (co-)create new narratives; increasing engagement, as well as correlating with pressing issues centred around the climate crisis and the urgent need to reduce travel to achieve Net Zero targets. Stories about a submerged land named Lyonesse abound in culture traditions of Southwest Britain and plausibly derive from memories of land loss within the Scilly Isles. We review Lyonesse stories, their links to Arthurian romances and Greek/Roman accounts of the Cassiterides, and trace their divergent evolution. From this region's history of land-sea movements and human occupation, we propose Lyonesse stories originated more than 4000 years ago when rising sea level divided a single inhabited island in the Scilly group. The comparable antiquity of similar stories is a compelling reason for supposing Lyonesse stories originated from observations of submergence encoded in cultural memories through oral traditions that endured in intelligible form for several millennia to reach us today. Foreign language education may serve many goals, but national storytelling would not be an obvious one. Due to the position of English as an international language, it has become an increasingly important tool for intercultural communication and international public relations for countries whose official language is not English. In this study, we will look into the case of China, where English has been seen as the most important medium of China's national storytelling. Chinese youths are encouraged to learn English well and to equip themselves with the competence to tell China's stories well in English. As a key theoretical underpinning in this study, national stories are taken as national identities to live by. To better understand this relationship, we have invited 100 undergraduate English Majors in a provincial Chinese university to each tell a China story in English. By subjecting the 100 China stories told by 100 Chinese youths in English to a rigorous thematic analysis, we hope to determine in this study what Chinese national identity is constructed through this national storytelling exercise. More importantly, by examining the Chinese case of English as a medium of national storytelling, this study aims to shed light on the specific purpose of English as a global medium for communicating a country's national narratives and national discourses. Jewish-Roman cuisine, the traditional food of one of Europe's longest-standing Jewish communities, is among Italy's most distinctive hyper-local repertoires. Gastronomes increasingly acknowledge the importance of Jewish foodways for Italian cuisine, but a few famous "signature dishes" often dominate popular ideas of Jewish food in Italy. In Rome, carciofi alla giudìa – deep-fried "Jewish-style" artichokes – have long been used to symbolize the diverse and complex Jewish-Roman tradition. Blending ethnographic methods with discourse analysis, I ask how and why carciofi alla giudìa occupy this role, and what this means for contemporary Jewish-Roman identity. I then examine a selection of "origin stories" behind other dishes in the Jewish-Roman tradition, arguing that going beyond the near-ubiquitous artichoke can complicate and enrich our understanding of Jewish-Roman history, culture, and identity. Rather than attempting to prove or disprove these stories, I analyze them as tools for self-fashioning. I identify a variety of characteristics that these narratives are used to communicate: including ancient roots; resilience and resourcefulness; and an openness to new arrivals and external influences. Finally, I interrogate the relationship between the Jewish-Roman tradition and the city's cuisine at large, arguing that this too has important repercussions for Roman and Jewish-Roman self-perception and identity.
