This paper will focus on Thai bordertowns located on ADB economic corridors. The decentralization process initiated in the 1970’s and regional cooperation are two dynamics deeply affecting the role of international borders and putting emphasize on border regions and towns, which used to be land-locked areas at the national scale. Following this idea, bordertowns have been included in governmental spatial planning and public funds have been invested since the beginning of the 1990’s in order to upgrade infrastructures in these cities. Even if Thai bordertowns differ drastically in the national urban frame, as far as demography, economy or infrastructures level are concerned, they are nowadays facing an unprecedented dynamism sustained by regional cooperation. Case studies of three towns located on economic corridors and targeted by national plans show that their spatial organization is changing: new urban centers are emerging, interactions with the areas located on the other side of the border are being reorganized and news actors, private as public, are impacting the urban landscape and functions. These modifications are creating new challenges for local authorities, as they are also likely to promote these cities at the national and regional scales.
