Abstract

In recent years, a large number of papers have appeared that dealt with $\EPEM$ pair production in heavy ion collisions at high energies. To a large extent these studies were motivated by the existence of relativistic heavy ion accelerators all over the world. There pair production can be studied in so called ``ultra-peripheral collisions'', where the ions do not come close enough to interact strongly with each other. Abstract

We calculate the cross section of J/psi plus prompt-photon inclusive production in gamma gamma collisions at next-to-leading order within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) focusing on direct photoproduction. Apart from direct J/psi production, we also include the feed-down from directly-produced chi_{cJ} and psi' mesons. We discuss the analytical calculation, in particular the treatment of the various types of singularities and the NRQCD operator renormalization, in some detail. We present theoretical predictions for the future e^+e^- linear collider TESLA, taking into account both brems- and beamstrahlung., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We calculate the next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive production of D^{*+-} mesons in p p-bar collisions as a function of the transverse momentum and the rapidity in two approaches using massive or massless charm quarks. For the inclusive cross section, we derive the massless limit from the massive theory. We find that this limit differs from the genuine massless version with MS-bar factorization by finite corrections. By adjusting subtraction terms, we establish a massive theory with MS-bar subtraction which approaches the massless theory with increasing transverse momentum. With these results and including the contributions due to the charm and anti-charm content of the proton and anti-proton, we calculate the inclusive D^{*+-} cross section in p p-bar collisions using realistic evolved non-perturbative fragmentation functions and compare with recent data from the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron at center-of-mass energy root(S) = 1.96 TeV. We find reasonable, though not perfect, agreement with the measured cross sections.

Abstract

Based on an approach to non-Abelian propagation of color dipoles in a nuclear medium we formulate a nonlinear k_t-factorization for the breakup of photons and pions into forward hard dijets in terms of the collective Weizs\"acker-Williams (WW) glue of nuclei. We find quite distinct practical consequences of nonlinear nuclear k_t-factorization for interactions of pointlike photons and non-pointlike pions. In the former case the large transverse momentum p_t of jets comes from the intrinsic momentum of quarks and antiquarks in the photon and nuclear effects manifest themselves as an azimuthal decorrelation with an acoplanarity momentum of the order of the nuclear saturation momentum Q_A. In the breakup of pions off free nucleons to the leading order in pQCD the spectator parton has a small transverse momentum and the hard dijet cross section is suppressed. In the breakup of pions off heavy nuclei the forward hard jets are predicted to be entirely decorrelated. We comment on the sensitivity of the pionic dijet cross section to the pion distribution amplitude. The predicted distinction between the breakup of photons and pions can be tested by the sphericity and thrust analysis of the forward hadronic system in the COMPASS experiment at CERN., Comment: 32 pages, 2 figures, RevTex4

Abstract

We study the associated production of bottomonia and Higgs bosons at hadron colliders within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics providing all contributing partonic cross sections in analytic form. While such processes tend to be suppressed in the standard model, they may have interesting cross sections in its minimal supersymmetric extension, especially at large values of tan(beta), where the bottom Yukawa couplings are enhanced. Abstract

The STAR collaboration at RHIC is measuring the production of electron-positron pairs at small impact parameters, larger than but already close to the range, where the ions interact strongly with each other. We calculate the total cross section, as well as, differential distributions of the pair production process with the electromagnetic excitation of both ions in a semiclassical approach and within a lowest order QED calculation. We compare the distribution of electron and positron with the one coming from the cross section calculation without restriction on impact parameter. Finally we give an outlook of possible results at the LHC., 15 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We study the photoproduction of a D^{*+-} meson in association with a hadron jet at next-to-leading order in the parton model of QCD with non-perturbative fragmentation functions extracted from LEP1 data of e^+e^- annihilation. The transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions recently measured at DESY HERA in various kinematic ranges nicely agree with our theoretical predictions. This provides a useful test of the universality and the scaling violations of the fragmentation functions predicted by the factorization theorem. These comparisons also illustrate the significance of the charm component in the resolved photon. This is elaborated by investigating the cross-section distributions in x_obs^gamma and cos(theta^*).

Abstract

We present theoretical predictions for the transverse-momentum distribution of J/psi mesons promptly produced in gamma gamma collisions within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, including the contributions from both direct and resolved photons, and we perform a conservative error analysis. The fraction of J/psi mesons from decays of bottom-flavoured hadrons is estimated to be negligibly small. New data taken by the DELPHI Collaboration at LEP2 nicely confirm these predictions, while they disfavour those obtained within the traditional colour-singlet model.

14 pp. (2002)., We consider $J/\psi$ photoproduction in $e^+ e^-$ as well as linear photon colliders. We find that the process is dominated by the resolved photon channel. Both the once-resolved and twice-resolved cross-sections are sensitive to (different combinations of) the colour octet matrix elements. Hence, this may be a good testing ground for colour octet contributions in NRQCD. On the other hand, the once-resolved J/psi production cross-section, particularly in a linear photon collider, is sensitive to the gluon content of the photon. Hence these cross-sections can be used to determine the parton distribution functions, especially the gluon distribution, in a photon, if the colour octet matrix elements are known.

We calculate total and differential cross sections for the production of sfermion pairs in photon-photon collisions, including contributions from resolved photons and arbitrary photon polarization. Sfermion production in photon collisions depends only on the sfermion mass and charge. It is thus independent of the details of the SUSY breaking mechanism, but highly sensitive to the sfermion charge. We compare the total cross sections for bremsstrahlung, beamstrahlung, and laser backscattering photons to those in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We find that the total cross section at a polarized photon collider is larger than the $e^+e^-$ annihilation cross section up to the kinematic limit of the photon collider.

Abstract

We present a new cascade-type microscopic simulation of nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC energies. The basic elements are partons (quarks and gluons) moving in 8N-dimensional phase space according to Poincare-covariant dynamics. The parton-parton scattering cross sections used in the model are computed within perturbative QCD in the tree-level approximation. The Q^2 dependence of the structure functions is included by an implementation of the DGLAP mechanism suitable for a cascade, so that the number of partons is not static, but varies in space and time as the collision of two nuclei evolves. Abstract

We study the production of Higgs-boson pairs at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LUC), in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. At the tree level this proceeds via $q\overline{q}$ annihilation and at the one loop level via gg fusion. These mechanisms are investigated for the production of neutral and charged Higgs-boson pairs as well as for $W^{\pm} H^{\mp}$ associated production. We present full analytical results for these processes. Por our numerical anlysis, we adopt the SUGRA-inspired scenario. It turns out that the SUSY contribution enhances the qoss section up to 50% in the case of $H^+ H^-$ production. In the case of $W^{\pm} H^{\mp}$ associated production, this can make an effect of $\pm$ 10% depending on tan $\beta$ and $m_{{H}_{\pm}}$ In the case of neutral Higgs production, this can enhance or decrease the cross section depending on tan $\beta$ and the final-state Higgs masses.

Abstract

In the absence of light Higgs bosons, the W and Z bosons become strongly interacting particles at energies of about 1 TeV. If the longitudinal W,Z components are generated by Goldstone modes associated with spontaneous symmetry breaking in a new strong interaction theory, the quasi-elastic W,Z scattering amplitudes can be predicted as a systematic chiral expansion in the energy. We study the potential of TeV e+e- and e-e- linear colliders in investigating these scattering processes. We estimate the accuracy with which the coefficients of the chiral expansion can be measured in a multi-parameter analysis. The measurements will provide us with a quantitative test of the dynamics underlying the W,Z interactions.

Abstract

Fragmentation functions for D mesons, based on the convolution of a perturbative part, related to the heavy quark perturbative showering, and a non-perturbative model for its hadronization into the meson, are used to describe D^* production in e^+e^- and ep collisions. The non-perturbative part is determined by fitting the e^+e^- data taken by ARGUS and OPAL at 10.6 and 91.2 GeV respectively. When fitting with a non perturbative Peterson fragmentation function and using next-to-leading evolution for the perturbative part, we find an epsilon parameter sensibly different from the one commonly used, which is instead found with a leading order fit. The use of this new value is shown to increase considerably the cross section for D^* production at HERA, suggesting a possible reconciliation between the next-to-leading order theoretical predictions and the experimental data.

The associated production of a J/psi and a photon in photon-hadron collisions is considered, and shown to be a good probe of the presence of colour-octet mediated channels in quarkonia production, as predicted by the factorization approach within NRQCD. 17 pp. (1996)., The next-to-leading-order (NLO) cross section for the production of heavy quarks at large transverse momenta ( p ⊥ in γγ collisions is calculated with perturbative fragmentation functions (PFFs). This approach allows for a resummation of terms ∝ α s ln( p 2 ⊥ / m 2 ) which arise in NLO from collinear emission of gluons by heavy quarks at large p ⊥ or from almost collinear branching of photons or gluons into heavy-quark pairs. We present single-inclusive distributions in p ⊥ and rapidity including direct and resolved photons for γγ production of heavy quarks at e + e − colliders and at high-energy γγ colliders. The results are compared with the fixed-order calculation for m finite including QCD radiative corrections. The two approaches differ in the definitions and relative contributions of the direct and resolved terms, but essentially agree in their sum. The resummation of the α s ln( p 2 ⊥ / m 2 ) terms in the PFF approach leads to a softer p ⊥ distribution and to a reduced sensitivity to the choice of the renormalization and factorization scales.

Berlin : Springer 10 pp. (1996)., The next-to-leading open charm production in $\gamma p$ collisions is calculated within the Perturbative Fragmentation Functions formalism, to allow resummation of $\as\log(\pt^2/m^2)$ terms. In the large $\pt$ region $(\pt > m)$ the result is consistent with the fixed order NLO calculation, small discrepancies being found for very large $\pt$ and at the edge of phase space. Abstract

42 pp. (1996)., We present a complete calculation of the higher-order perturbative QCD corrections to inelastic photoproduction of J / ψ particles. A comprehensive analysis of total cross sections and differential distributions for the energy range of the fixed-target experiments and for inelastic J/ψ photoproduction at HERA is performed. The cross section and the J / ψ energy spectrum are compared wth the available photoproduction data including first results from HERA. This analysis will not only provide information on the gluon distribution of the proton but appears to be a clean test for the underlying picture of quarkonium production as developed so far in the perturbative QCD sector.

Abstract

34 pp. (1996)., A measurement of inclusive charged particle distributions in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering for $\gamma~* p$ centre-of-mass energies $75< W < 175$GeV and momentum transfer squared $10< Q~2 < 160$GeV$~2$ from the ZEUS detector at HERA is presented. The differential charged particle rates in the $\gamma~* p$ centre-of-mass system as a function of the scaled longitudinal momentum, $x_F$, and of the transverse momentum, $p_t~*$ and $\,\,$ , as a function of $x_F$, $W$ and $Q~2$ are given. Separate distributions are shown for events with (LRG) and without (NRG) a rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction. The data are compared with results from experiments at lower beam energies, with the naive quark parton model and with parton models including perturbative QCD corrections. The comparison shows the importance of the higher order QCD processes. Significant differences of the inclusive charged particle rates between NRG and LRG events at the same $W$ are observed. The value of $\,\,$ for LRG events with a hadronic mass $M_X$, which excludes the forward produced baryonic system, is similar to the $\,\,$ value observed in fixed target experiments at $W \approx M_X$.

Abstract

We extend a quantum kinetic approach to the description of hadronic showers in space, time and momentum space to deep-inelastic $ep$ collisions, with particular reference to experiments at HERA. We follow the history of hard scattering events back to the initial hadronic state and forward to the formation of colour-singlet pre-hadronic clusters and their decays into hadrons. The time evolution of the space-like initial-state shower and the time-like secondary partons are treated similarly, and cluster formation is treated using a spatial criterion motivated by confinement and a non-perturbative model for hadronization. We calculate the time evolution of particle distributions in rapidity, transverse and longitudinal space. We also compare the transverse hadronic energy flow and the distribution of observed hadronic masses with experimental data from HERA, and find encouraging results. The techniques developed in this paper may be applied in the future to more complicated processes such as eA, pp, pA and AA collisions.

Abstract

In two-photon collisions at LEP2 and a future e + e − linear collider heavy quarks (mainly charm) will be pair-produced rather copiously. The production via direct and resolved photons can be distinguished experimentally via a remnant-jet tag. We study correlations of the heavy quarks at next-to-leading order in QCD in the direct channel, which is free from phenomenological parton densities in the photon. These correlations are therefore directly calculable in perturbative QCD and provide a stringent test of the production mechanism.

Abstract

17 pp. (1995)., The exclusive production of ϱ 0 mesons in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections have been measured in the range 7 < Q 2 < 25 GeV 2 for λ ∗ p centre of mass (c.m.) energies 40 to 130 GeV. The λ ∗ p → ϱ 0 p cross section exhibits a Q −(4.2±0.8 −0.5 +1.4 ) dependence and both longitudinally and transversely polarised ϱ 0 's are observed. The λ ∗ p → ϱ 0 p cross section rises strongly with increasing c.m. energy, when compared with NMC data at lower energy, which cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. The data are compared with perturbative QCD calculations where the rise in the cross section reflects the increase in the gluon density at low x .

Abstract

16 pp. (1995)., Jet production in deep inelastic scattering for 120 < Q 2 < 3600 GeV 2 has been studied using data from an integrated luminosity of 3.2 pb −1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified with the JADE algorithm. A cut on the angular distribution of parton emission in the γ ∗ - parton centre-of-mass system minimises the experimental and theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the jet rates. The jet rates, when compared to O ( α s 2 ) perturbative QCD calculations, allow a precise determination of α s ( Q ) in three Q 2 -intervals. The values are consistent with a running of ifα s ( Q ), as expected from QCD. Extrapolating to Q = M Z 0 α s ( M Z 0 ) = 0.117 ± 0.005 (stat) −0.005 +0.004 (syst exp ) ± 0.007 (syst theory ).

Abstract

11 pp. (1995)., The next-to-leading order inclusive cross section for large- p ⊥ photoproduction of charm quarks at HERA is calculated in two different approaches. In the first approach the charm quarks are treated as massive objects which are strictly external to the proton and the photon while in the second approach the charm mass is neglected and the c quark is assumed to be one of the active flavours in the proton and photon structure functions. We present single-inclusive distributions in transverse momentum and rapidity including direct and resolved photons. The cross section in the massless approach is found to be significantly larger than in the massive scheme. The deviation originates from several contributions which are disentangled. We argue that large- p ⊥ photoproduction of charm quarks at HERA will be sensitive to the charm content of the photon structure function.

Abstract

University of Toronto, Diss., 1995; 101 pp. (1995). = University of Toronto, Diss., 1995, High energy (E > 400 GeV) leading neutrons were observed for the first time in electron-proton (ep) collisions, in the data collected in 1993 with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider. This was done using the lest Forward Neutron Calorimeter (FNC). In this thesis, first, the ZEUS detector setup is described, including a detailed description of the FNC, its insitu calibration and the detemination of its acceptance. At an ep collider photon-proton physics (photoproduction) can also be studied using the almost real photons emitied by the electron beam. With the FNC, leading neutron physics was studied using the ZEUS photoproduction data sample, at an average $\gamma p$ center of mass energy of 180 GeV. The first results are presented here, including the inclusive neutron spectrum. The characteristics of events conlaining such leading neutrons in photoproduction are discussed and compared to the overall photoproduction sample. The One Pion Exchange model from hadron-hadron collisions was found to be consistent with the presented data. The total photon-pion cross section was measured using the FNC to tag an almost real pion beam. It was found to be $\sigma_{\gamma \pi}$ (90 GeV) = 92 $\pm$ 5 (stat.) ± 28 (syst.) $\mu b$. The inclusive transverse momentum ($P_T$) distributions of charged particles in photoproduclion are also presented for non-diffractive events, the diffractive events in two bins of the diffractmg mass, äs well äs for the non-diffractive leading neutron tagged events. The results are discussed and compared to the previous photoproduction and hadron-hadron data.

Abstract

28 pp. (1993)., The Selberg trace formula for automorphic forms of weightmεℤ, on bordered Riemann surfaces is developed. The trace formula is formulated for arbitrary Fuchsian groups of the first kind with reflection symmetry which include hyperbolic, elliptic and parabolic conjugacy classes. In the case of compact bordered Riemann surfaces we can explicitly evaluate determinants of Maass-Laplacians for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary-conditions, respectively. Some implications for the open bosonic string theory are mentioned.

11 pp. (1993)., We calculate in next-to-leading order inclusive cross sections of single-particle production via resolved photons inep collisions at HERA. Transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions are presented and the scale dependence is studied. The results are compared with first experimental data from the H1 Collaboration at HERA.
