Abstract

At the start of my hydrobiologist career, I spent almost two decades under the patronage of Lajos Felföldy, the outstanding hydrobiologist and botanist. As both of us were staff members of the onetime Water Resources Research Centre (VITUKI, Budapest, Hungary), we were involved in several research projects. Felföldy had recognized that the lack of identification keys and monographs of the aquatic biota written in Hungarian is a serious impediment for the progress of hydrobiological science in Hungary. Thus, he edited and partly authored the 25-volume series of Vízügyi hidrobiológia (Hydrobiology for water resources research). Another outstanding contribution of him was a comprehensive monograph on aquatic ecology (A vizek környezettana) published in 1981, which is an excellent reference work even today. His hydrobiological research mainly focused on the water quality and biota of water reservoirs. He had a clear knowledge and expertise on these and applied innovative techniques to improve or maintain the water quality of reservoirs. Personally, I learned from him a lot, both in hydrobiology and humanity. When he retired at the age of 60, he gave me the following advice. "Sir, you should continue to work as a researcher until you can do it with due humility. As soon as you feel this is not the case, you should give it up immediately." 2. IDENTIFICATION OF POMADASYS SPECIES (PISCES, HAEMULIDAE) FROM AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MIDDEN SITE IN NANKUANLI EAST (TAIWAN), BASED ON OTOLITH MORPHOLOGY.

Abstract

The morphology of the sagittae of the genus Pomadasys was used to identify otolith remains from an archaeological midden site in Nankuanli East (NKLE) in Tainan City in southwestern Taiwan. Of the 60 Pomadasys otoliths from the NKLE site, 50 were identifi ed as belonging to four presently occurring species, namely P. argenteus (n = 37), P. kaakan (6), P. maculatus (1), and P. quadrilineatus (6). Ten otoliths, lacking distinguishable characteristics remained unidentifi ed as to species. The sizes of the fi shes that would have produced the predominant P. argenteus otoliths from the NKLE site were estimated using the relationships between fi sh length, fi sh weight, and the otolith length of modern fi shes. The fi shsize estimates from most otoliths were less than 152.15 mm in length and 59.68 g in weight, except for the extrapolated estimation of 598.03 mm in length from one extremely large-sized otolith that measured 26.43 mm in length. Species composition and distribution of Pomadasys fi shes were compared between this archaeological site and the present-day status, and the implication of coastal adaptation on the estimated fi sh sizes of prehistoric NKLE inhabitants was discussed. Abstract

Premise of the study To characterize the level of genetic diversity and gene flow, as well as to identify unambiguously two African tropical tree species, Erythrophleum ivorense and E. suaveolens, we have developed a set of nuclear SSR (Simple Sequence Repeats) markers. Methods and Results Nine SSRs that display polymorphism in both species were identified. The nine newly developed SSR markers can be amplified in only two multiplexed reactions. Levels of polymorphism were assessed in two populations per species, yielding two to fifteen alleles per locus in E. ivorense and three to sixteen alleles per locus in E. suaveolens. Conclusions The SSR markers developed here are promising to study the spatial distribution of genetic diversity and the genetic delimitation of two Erythrophleum species from central Africa. © 2011 Botanical Society of America.

4. Fusarium spp. Contamination of Wheat, Maize, Soybean, and Pea Grain in Croatia

Abstract

From 2002 to 2008, 203 samples of wheat, maize, soybean, and pea were analysed for the presence of Fusarium species. Contamination with Fusarium spp., expressed as the percentage of seeds with Fusarium colonies, ranged from 5 % to 69 % for wheat, from 25 % to 100 % for maize, from 4 % to 17 % for soybean, and from 3 % to 17 % for pea. 187 isolates were collected and the following 19 species determined: F. graminearum, F. poae, F. avenaceum, F. verticillioides, F. sporotrichioides, F. heterosporum, F. crookwellense, F. tricinctum, F. semitectum, F. oxysporum, F. proliferatum, F. solani, F. equiseti, F. pseudograminearum, F. chlamydosporum, F. sambucinum, F. compactum, F. scirpi, and F. culmorum. Dominant species were F. graminearum on wheat (27 % of isolates), F. verticillioides on maize (83 % of isolates), F. sporotrichioides on soybean (34 % of isolates), and F. proliferatum on pea (29 % of isolates). Among species identifi ed, F. heterosporum, F. crookwellense, F. pseudograminearum, F. sambucinum, and F. compactum have been reported for the fi rst time in Croatia., U periodu od 2002. do 2008. g. analizirana je prisutnost vrsta Fusariuma na 208 uzoraka zrna pšenice, kukuruza, soje i graška. Kontaminacija vrstama Fusariuma, izražena kao postotak sjemenki s kolonijama Fusarium spp., kretala se od 5 % do 69 % na pšenici, od 25 % do 100 % na kukuruzu, od 4 % do 17 % na soji te od 3 % do 17 % na grašku. Prosječna kontaminacija vrstama Fusariuma u različitim godinama varirala je od 10 % do 46 % na pšenici, od 50 % do 91 % na kukuruzu, od 5 % do 9 % na soji te od 7 % do 10 % na grašku. Vrste Fusariuma koje se javljaju na zrnu izolirane su i determinirane s odabranih uzoraka pšenice, kukuruza, soje i graška. Skupljeno je 187 izolata, a utvrđeno je 19 vrsta: F. graminearum, F. poae, F. avenaceum, F. verticillioides, F. sporotrichioides, F. heterosporum, F. crookwellense, F. tricinctum, F. semitectum, F. oxysporum, F. proliferatum, F. solani, F. equiseti, F. pseudograminearum, F. chlamydosporum, F. sambucinum, F. compactum, F. scirpi i F. culmorum. Dominantne vrste bile su F. graminearum na pšenici (27 % izolata), F. verticillioides na kukuruzu (83 % izolata), F. sporotrichioides na soji (34 % izolata) te F. proliferatum na grašku (29 % izolata). U Hrvatskoj su prvi put utvrđene vrste F. heterosporum, F. crookwellense, F. pseudograminearum, F. sambucinum i F. compactum.

5. Genetics of Wild and Captive Lobster Populations

Abstract

There has been a signifi cant increase in the number of genetic investigations into lobster biology in recent years. We summarize and evaluate the insights provided by these studies, with emphasis on population structure, reproductive biology, diet, species identifi cation and fi sheries - induced evolution. The applications of genetic techniques are far reaching and likely to become increasingly important to aquaculture and fi sheries research and management. In particular, applications of species identification and DNA barcoding techniques allow for surveillance of product substitution and contamination. It can also be used to map species distributions, understand food webs, attribute catch to stocks and for mapping the distribution and abundance of planktonic larvae. We conclude by discussing how the development of new genetic technologies is likely to deliver further novel insights about the biology of lobsters and provide important foundations for future fi sheries management.
