This article discusses the importance of radar systems and processing methods for space situational awareness (SSA). It highlights the vulnerability of the space environment due to the increasing number of satellites and space debris, as well as the growing threat of attacks. Radar sensors are particularly useful for SSA because they can detect small debris over long ranges and accurately track objects. The article presents various topics related to radar systems for SSA, including ground-based and space-based radar, multistatic radar networks, and cognitive radar and deep-learning methods. For spaceborne ISAR imaging of space targets, due to the high-speed relative motion between the radar and targets, both the translational and rotational motion exhibit the high-order characteristics. Conventional translational motion compensation (TMC) methods are ineffective in handling such high-order translational motion. Moreover, the migration through resolution cell (MTRC) stems from the presence of the high-order spatial variant phase of the echo signal, resulting in severe defocusing of ISAR images. In this paper, a novel spaceborne ISAR imaging approach for space targets is proposed, which incorporates the high-order TMC and the high-order MTRC correction. First, the slant range model for spaceborne ISAR imaging is derived as a third-order polynomial form. Based on this model, a modified high-order TMC method is proposed, which utilizes the minimum entropy method combined with the Broyden – Fletcher – Goldfarb – Shanno (BFGS) algorithm. The proposed method leverages orbital model information to obtain the initial TMC coefficients, enabling TMC to be completed more accurately and effectively. Then, a modified polynomial keystone transform (PKT) is proposed to correct the high-order MTRC. The PKT-based method effectively addresses both the high-order and first-order MTRC corrections simultaneously. Finally, a spaceborne ISAR imaging approach is proposed to obtain well-focused ISAR images. Simulated and real data results validate the analysis of the spaceborne ISAR imaging model and demonstrate the effectiveness of the spaceborne imaging approach for space targets proposed in this paper. This article presents a novel 3‐D shape reconstruction strategy for small solar system bodies using spaceborne radar which is applied in flyby trajectories to characterize multiple targets in one mission to save time and cost. In this study, we establish a measurement geometry for rapidly spinning small solar system bodies that combines the motion properties of synthetic aperture radar and circular synthetic aperture radar techniques. We also propose a modified imaging algorithm, which is processed using Cardano's formula and the modified polar format algorithm, to improve the imaging quality. Finally, we present simulated results of point‐scattering and 3D shape models. Our analysis shows that the shape reconstruction errors of the algorithm are less than 1.5 m as indicated by the standard deviation. Plain Language Summary: Exploring small solar system bodies is crucial to understanding the evolution of our solar system. However, most of these small bodies are distant from Earth, and the small size, weak gravity, irregular shape, and high speed rotation further increase the difficulty of exploring a small solar system body. To tackle these challenges and characterize as many targets as possible in one mission, we propose a novel 3‐D imaging strategy. Our approach aims to reconstruct the 3D shape of rapidly spinning small solar system bodies in flyby trajectories. Conventional transmitarray antennas are designed to produce a directional pattern with the beam peak in a single direction when the feed is placed at a distinct location. A real-life application requiring conical beam scanning necessitates the development of antennas with patterns that sweep out a cone in space through successive excitation of feeds placed at multiple locations along the body of the revolution ring focus. In this communication, we propose transmitarrays as an antenna solution that can achieve the conical beam sweep. Compared to the previously reported transmitarrays, the development of an off-axis-fed transmitarray for conical beam scanning requires significant advancements regarding the synthesis and optimization of the off-axis-fed transmitarray. A novel synthesis algorithm is presented based on the optimization of the feed location and a modified transmitarray phase compensation. To validate the approach, an 18 cm transmitarray with a thickness of 0.8 cm operating at 13.4 GHz is designed, simulated, prototyped, and measured. Predictions obtained by full-wave simulations agree well with the measured results. Conventional radars repeat the transmission of the same waveform after a predefined interval of time called pulse-repetition-interval (PRI). This technique helps estimate the range and Doppler shift of the targets and suppress clutter. However, in dual-function radar communication (DFRC), a different symbol waveform is transmitted after each PRI. Depending on the number of targets, radar receiver output yields several peaks representing different targets’ ranges. Each peak comes with its side-lobes called range-side-lobes (RSL). In DFRC, due to different symbol waveform transmission, peaks and RSLs do not remain coherent, making Doppler shift estimation and clutter suppression challenging tasks. In most of the available literature, iterative receive filters have been designed for DFRC to minimize RSLs and achieve coherent output for different waveforms. However, the proposed receive filter does not guarantee coherent output for more than two waveforms. In contrast, we proposed two novel closed-form algorithms to design receive filters for DFRC that guarantee coherent output response for several waveforms and suppress RSLs. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed receivers achieve full coherency, and the RSLs are significantly lower than the conventional method. This article presents the first demonstration of a full-waveguide feed at W-band, enabling transmit–receive duplexing and 2-D tracking of targets. The proposed device is a compact unit designed to be used as feed of a 94 GHz space-borne radar. Its duplexing concept relies on a septum orthomode transducer polarizer for transmitting and receiving sum signals with opposite circular polarizations. Additionally, the first higher order mode of circular waveguide (TM01) is allowed to propagate inside the device to extract a difference signal for tracking. By comparing received sum and difference signals in amplitude and phase, both angular directions of a target position can be derived. A prototype of the duplexer was fabricated and tested: measurements at 94 GHz show return loss and isolation above 23 dB at all ports, with reasonable performance from 92 to 96 GHz. With the increasing of on-orbit satellites, target dynamic monitoring becomes more and more important in space situation awareness applications. Currently, there are some exploratory methods monitoring attitude-stabilized targets using various high-resolution remote sensing technologies. However, it is still a big challenge to achieve dynamic estimation of spin satellite with single sensor. Inspired by the existing matching based works, this article presents a dynamic estimation method of spin satellite using single-station inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images. When the angle accumulation is set to be a constant in each ISAR imaging period, the projection change of target structures in the long-term observation sequence is described with the hidden Markov model to build the mathematic expression of target on-orbit state. In this condition, target sequential attitude can be solved with Viterbi decoding algorithm even the azimuth scaling of each image is difficulty due to target spin motion. Then, combined with the radar observation geometry, target sequential attitude parameters are substituted into a spin parameter optimization, which is solved by particle swarm optimization algorithm. In the end, target instantaneous attitude vectors and spin speed are used to express its dynamic during the observation period. Simulation experiments of a typical spin spacecraft, Tiangong-I, confirm the feasibility of the proposed algorithm, and its superiority is also investigated by comparison with the existing work. The advantages of sub-terahertz technology (sub-THz, 200–700 GHz) have already been advanced for imaging and recognition of a space object's state from a space-based sensor using inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR). The technology benefits from wide absolute signal bandwidths, giving high range resolution and from enhanced sensitivity to surface texture. An experimental validation of such a system in controlled laboratory conditions is presented. Possible image formation methods are proposed and evaluated experimentally. Images of real parts of satellites have been produced at sub-THz frequencies and compared to lower frequency images. Other results include sub-THz bistatic ISAR, and sub-THz cross-polarized images which highlight the scattering from rough surfaces while attenuating the very bright scatterers seen from conventional monostatic images. In recent years, there are increasing interests and applications on radar–communication integration for system miniaturization, cost reduction, and so on. Moreover, thanks to the common functions of hardware components including transceiver, antennas, and even basic signal/data processing, the integrated design of radar and communication systems becomes feasible. In this article, through design of proper time sequences, waveforms, and recognition algorithms, radar sensing and wireless communication can be integrated into 4-D antenna arrays simultaneously. In addition, with the high design degrees of freedom of 4-D arrays, the proposed approach can also provide a low probability of intercept capability. Being a key technology for beyond fifth-generation wireless systems, joint communication and radar sensing (JCAS) utilizes the reflections of communication signals to detect foreign objects and deliver situational awareness. A cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is uniquely suited to form a mobile bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) with its serving base station (BS) to sense over large areas with superb sensing resolutions at no additional requirement of spectrum. This paper designs this novel BS-UAV bistatic SAR platform, and optimizes the flight path of the UAV to minimize its propulsion energy and guarantee the required sensing resolutions on a series of interesting landmarks. A new trajectory planning algorithm is developed to convexify the propulsion energy and resolution requirements by using successive convex approximation and block coordinate descent. Effective trajectories are obtained with a polynomial complexity. Extensive simulations reveal that the proposed trajectory planning algorithm outperforms significantly its alternative that minimizes the flight distance of cellular-aided sensing missions in terms of energy efficiency and effective consumption fluctuation. This is the third of three articles that quantify the high added value of frequent satellite microwave observations of the atmosphere (with a “refresh” time on the order of 1 min) to capture the dynamics of weather systems. Recent advances in small-satellite and microwave miniaturization, such as the “Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical systems” (TempEST) millimeter-wave radiometer developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, are paving the way for the design of convoys of spaceborne radars that can directly observe the evolution of severe weather at very fine temporal scales. The analyses presented here are to establish the relation between passive microwave observations and their change in time and the underlying cloud variables and processes and to evaluate the sensitivity to the different physical and instrument parameters. In this third part, simulations are used to demonstrate and quantify the direct sensitivity of a time sequence of mm-wave radiances to the vertical structure of the vertical updrafts in convective storms. It is demonstrated that the brightness temperatures from a pair of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) radiometers maintaining a separation of 1 or 2 min can indeed be used to retrieve the column-maximum magnitude of the vertical wind as well as the height of the maximum. While such passive retrievals do not provide the vertical detail that a pair of radars would produce, the radiometers have a vast swath and therefore enable the observation of an entire storm. The application is therefore quite different from the case of a convoy of radars: rather than compiling radar statistics over multiple years, the radiometer-convoy measurements can be used to analyze every storm that is observed. Radar sounders (RSs) are gaining importance in planetary missions thanks to their unique capability of providing direct measurements of subsurface (SS) structures. To support their design and data interpretation, several electromagnetic (e.m.) simulation techniques have been developed with enhanced capabilities for emulating the RS acquisition process. However, the raw simulated radargrams obtained from e.m. simulators are difficult to interpret and analyze without a focusing operation, which results in an underestimation of the RS detection performance. While frequency methods for range and azimuth compression of real RS data are well-established, their use on simulated data is not addressed in the literature and requires major modifications. This article presents a novel method that implements azimuth compression using unfocused and focused processing on simulated raw data. The proposed method is based on an adaptation of the range-Doppler algorithm to the case of raw data generated by a coherent RS simulator. The method is demonstrated in three case studies to show the similarity between simulated and real data processing: 1) simple geometries; 2) a simulated SHAllow RADar (SHARAD) radargram compared with the real data product; and 3) a real application scenario for supporting the design of a new RS instrument. The results indicate higher fidelity of the focused simulated data with the real data product and the target structure, confirming the usefulness of the proposed approach in obtaining realistic processing of simulated radargrams. Spaceborne radar sounders are high frequency (HF)/very high frequency (VHF) nadir-looking sensors devoted to subsurface investigations. Their data interpretation can be severely hindered by off-nadir surface clutter. Recent literature showed that the clutter suppression capabilities of this class of systems can be greatly enhanced by deploying an array of orbiting sensors in formation flight synthesizing a narrow radar antenna beam. In this article, we assess the capability of distributed radar sounding to discriminate clutter from subsurface returns by exploiting direction of arrival (DOA) estimation techniques. This is achieved by first outlining an approach for designing and evaluating the distributed radar sounder DOA estimation performance as function of the radar system parameters (e.g., intersensor distance) and external noise factors such as ionospheric scintillations. Then, the theory is complemented by radar simulations of several acquisitions over Greenland assuming a variety of subsurface geometries. The simulations confirm that clutter discrimination through DOA estimation is a viable approach to further improve the array capability in disambiguation of subsurface echoes from surface ones. Methodologies for characterization of the lateral indentation of silicon-germanium (SiGe) nanosheets using different non-destructive and in-line compatible metrology techniques are presented and discussed. Gate-all-around nanosheet device structures with a total of three sacrificial SiGe sheets were fabricated and different etch process conditions used to induce indent depth variations. Scatterometry with spectral interferometry and x-ray fluorescence in conjunction with advanced interpretation and machine learning algorithms were used to quantify the SiGe indentation. Solutions for two approaches, average indent (represented by a single parameter) as well as sheet-specific indent, are presented. Both scatterometry with spectral interferometry as well as x-ray fluorescence measurements are suitable techniques to quantify the average indent through a single parameter. Furthermore, machine learning algorithms enable a fast solution path by combining x-ray fluorescence difference data with scatterometry spectra, therefore avoiding the need for a full optical model solution. A similar machine learning model approach can be employed for sheet-specific indent monitoring; however, reference data from cross-section transmission electron microscopy image analyses are required for training. It was found that scatterometry with spectral interferometry spectra and a traditional optical model in combination with advanced algorithms can achieve a very good match to sheet-specific reference data. When a missile-borne radar system works in downward-looking surveillance mode, the broadened ground clutter signal in virtue of platform high-speed motion will be received by the radar receiver, which will cause difficulty in moving target detection and attacking. Unlike airborne and spaceborne platforms, a missile-borne platform exhibits some unique motion characteristics, such as diving, spinning, and coning, causing the clutter space–time distribution property significantly different from those of airborne and spaceborne radar platforms. In addition, the forward target striking requirements make the missile-borne clutter space–time spectrum further exhibit the severe range-dependent property. To deal with these issues, accurate motion modeling of a missile-borne radar platform is first carried out in this article, where the complex platform motions including forward-looking diving, spinning, and coning are considered. Then, the autocorrelation processing combined with iterative adaptive approach is applied to estimate the clutter angle-Doppler center frequencies, so as to effectively realize the clutter nonstationary compensation along spatial and temporal directions. Finally, a time-domain sliding window-based subspace projection method is proposed to achieve the robust clutter suppression. Weather radar echo extrapolation, which predicts future echoes based on historical observations, is one of the complicated spatial–temporal sequence prediction tasks and plays a prominent role in severe convection and precipitation nowcasting. However, existing extrapolation methods mainly focus on a defective echo-motion extrapolation paradigm based on finite observational dynamics, neglecting that the actual echo sequence has a more complicated evolution process that contains both nonlinear motions and the lifecycle from initiation to decay, resulting in poor prediction precision and limited application ability. To complement this paradigm, we propose to incorporate a novel long-term evolution regularity memory (LERM) module into the network, which can memorize long-term echo-evolution regularities during training and be recalled for guiding extrapolation. Moreover, to resolve the blurry prediction problem and improve forecast accuracy, we also adopt a coarse–fine hierarchical extrapolation strategy and compositive loss function. We separate the extrapolation task into coarse and fine two levels which can reduce the downsampling loss and retain echo fine details. Except for the average reconstruction loss, we additionally employ adversarial loss and perceptual similarity loss to further improve the visual quality. Experimental results from two real radar echo datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology and show that it can accurately extrapolate the echo evolution while ensuring the echo details are realistic enough, even for the long term. Our method can further be improved in the future by integrating multimodal radar variables or introducing certain domain prior knowledge of physical mechanisms. For a space-based radar system with hybrid baseline, the problem of clutter angle-Doppler spectral broadening poses a significant challenge to clutter cancellation in the terrain fluctuant observation scene. To improve the robustness of clutter suppression, this article proposed a homogeneous sample selection method based on a novel concept of generalized spatial spectrum density function (GSSDF). This method can be summarized as three crucial steps. First, the GSSDF was constructed by the prior information of digital elevation model (DEM) data, radar system parameters, and the backscattering model. Then, the angle of deflection (AOD) and the equivalent bandwidth (EBW) of GSSDF were adopted to measure the diffusion of clutter spectral. Subsequently, the sample selection criterion was established by a new threshold detection strategy, but the key here is that an appropriate detection threshold of the AOD and EBW can be determined by the characteristic of filter response. To summarize, this approach ensures that the training samples sharing similar clutter properties can be selected to estimate clutter covariance matrix (CCM), thereby enhances clutter suppression capability. Multiple-input and multiple-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO SAR) is a very potential technique for high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) imaging due to the fact that it can provide more degrees of freedom. In this article, an innovative MIMO-HRWS SAR imaging system is introduced with segmented phase coding (SPC) waveforms. However, it is well-known that the echo separation issue is the most technical challenge for MIMO SAR. It has shown that the separation of orthogonal echoes from cross correlation interference can be achieved by scan-on-receive (SCORE). However, this method often requires large computing resources on board, especially for null-steering process. For this, we propose a two-stage spaceborne–ground echo separation scheme. This scheme is mainly divided into two steps: the first step is a real-time SCORE beamforming process on board to reduce the downlink data volume, and the second step is a bandpass–null-steering process to suppress the interfering echoes on the ground. Thus, this scheme allows for the low computing resources on board and sufficient suppression of the interference simultaneously. Following this scheme, the MIMO-HRWS SAR system enables its number of equivalent phase centers nearly double that of the azimuth multichannel SAR system, leading to higher resolution and wider swath imaging. Finally, detailed simulation experiments for the MIMO-HRWS SAR imaging system are performed to verify the practicability and feasibility of the proposed scheme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a new method to retrieve dynamic information from spaceborne Doppler radar observations. The method is based on a complex convolution Doppler resampling (CConDoR) formulation, which links the spaceborne pulse-pair (PP) correlation measurements to high-resolution PP products that are not affected by the spacecraft motion. The CConDoR formalism allows to easily simulate Doppler products via convolution products. The CConDoR representation enables also retrievals by deconvolution. This approach is illustrated using a Wiener deconvolution algorithm. Results are shown for simulations of the radar of the Earth Cloud Aerosol Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE; developed by the European and Japanese space agencies). The proposed corrections improve the accuracy of the measured mean velocities (by correcting for nonuniform beam-filling (NUBF) biases) and spectral widths (by correcting for the spectral broadening), which to the best of the authors’ knowledge is novel. Lake ice thickness (LIT), a thematic product of lakes as an essential climate variable (ECV), is sensitive to changes in air temperature and on-ice snow mass. Here, a novel and efficient analytic method (retracking approach) is presented for the estimation of LIT from Ku-band (13.6 GHz) radar altimetry data. The new retracker, referred to as ${{\mathtt {LRM}}\_{}{\mathtt {LIT}}}$ , is based on the physical modeling of the conventional radar echoes (also called low-resolution mode or LRM) over ice-covered lakes that show a characteristic step-like feature in their leading edge attributed to the reflection of radar waves at the snow–ice and ice–water interfaces. The method is applied to Jason-2 and Jason-3 data acquired over Great Slave Lake, Canada, over three ice seasons (2013–2016). As expected, the agreement between the Jason-2 and Jason-3 LIT estimates over their overlapping period (2016 ice season) is excellent with a mean bias error of 0.013 m and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.024 m. LIT estimates from ${{\mathtt {LRM}}\_{}{\mathtt {LIT}}}$ are in good agreement with simulations from a thermodynamic lake ice model and in situ measurements with RMSE values of the order of a few centimeters for the three winter seasons. The retracker also provides a robust way to assess the accuracy of LIT estimates which is in the order of 0.10 m when the ice cover is well established and prior to melt onset. In addition, ${{\mathtt {LRM}}\_{}{\mathtt {LIT}}}$ captures the seasonal transitions during the freeze-up and breakup periods and ice growth over different winter seasons, making it a promising method for monitoring inter-annual variability and trends in LIT from past and current conventional radar altimetry missions. Currently, the spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system transmits a great deal of data to the ground processing station and generates massive images daily, only a tiny fraction of which contains radio frequency interference (RFI). However, most of the existing RFI detection methods are based on the prior conditions in which the known image contains interference. In fact, it is difficult to learn whether SAR images contain RFIs without prescreening, so it is of great significance to the rapid and real-time screening and detection of RFI in SAR images. This article proposes a method to screen and detect RFI from massive SAR images simultaneously. 1) We construct an approximate RFI-free background image by using the preprocessed time-series SAR images acquired in the past. 2) We generate difference images based on the image change detection method and analyze them by using an adaptive threshold, then calculate the entropy of all difference images to complete the preliminary screening of the RFI-containing). According to the preliminary results, we remove the RFI-containing parts; after reconstructing the background, we repeat step 2 with the images to be detected and obtain the final screening and detection results. Radio frequency interference (RFI) is a significant threat to accurate microwave remote sensing. The RFI signals manifest themselves in unpredictable locations and patterns in the image, which will cause measurement distortion and image degradation or even lead to wrong retrievals of the geophysical parameters. Accurate detection of RFI artifacts is a prerequisite step to preserve the overall quality of remote sensing quality. In this article, a semantic cognitive enhancement network for RFI signature detection is proposed. It employs an encoder–decoder architecture, which incorporates the atrous spatial pyramid pooling, depthwise convolution, and self-attentional mechanism. Rather than detecting the existence of RFI artifacts for an entire image, the proposed scheme can realize RFI recognition in a pixelwise manner without setting predefined thresholds. Extensive experimental results on diverse scenarios in Sentinel-1 images with various RFI types are provided, which demonstrates robust detection performance for both strong and weak interference without requiring a large number of training samples. Incidence angle diversity of space-borne radiometer and radar systems operating at low microwave frequencies needs to be taken into consideration to accurately estimate soil moisture (SM) across spatial scales. In this study, the single channel algorithm (SCA) is first applied to Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) brightness temperatures at vertical polarization (${\mathrm{ TB}}_{V}$) to estimate SM at coarse resolution (25 km) and develop a land cover-specific and incidence angle (32.5°, 42.5°, and 52.5°)-adaptive calibration of single scattering albedo ($\omega$) and soil roughness ($h_{s}$) parameters. These effective parameters are used together with fine-scale multiangular Sentinel-1 backscatter in a single-pass active–passive downscaling approach to estimate ${\mathrm{ TB}}_{V}$ at fine scale (1 km) for each SMOS incidence angle. These ${\mathrm{ TB}}_{V}\mathrm {s}$ are finally inverted to obtain the corresponding high-resolution SM maps. Results over the Iberian Peninsula for year 2018 show an increasing trend of $\omega $ and a decreasing trend of $h_{s}$ with SMOS incidence angle, with almost no variability of $\omega $ across land cover types. The active–passive covariation parameter is shown to increase with SMOS incidence angle and decrease with Sentinel-1 incidence angle. Coarse and fine ${\mathrm{ TB}}_{V}$ maps from the three SMOS incidence angles show similar distributions (mean differences below 0.38 K). Resulting high-resolution SM maps have maximum differences in mean and standard deviation of 0.016 and 0.015 m3/m3, respectively, and compare well with in situ measurements. Our results indicate that model-based microwave approaches to estimate SM can be adequately adapted to account for the incidence angle diversity of planned missions, such as Copernicus Microwave Imaging Radiometer (CIMR), Radar Observing System for Europe in L-band (ROSE-L), and Sentinel-1 next generation. A large time-bandwidth product bistatic radar offers several advantages in high-resolution target detection and motion parameter estimation, but the scale factor and inner-pulse Doppler will also be introduced in the radar echoes when detecting high-speed targets. Under this condition, the conventional matched filter will cause a certain energy loss and a nonnegligible shift of the range center, which is called mismatch effect. Considering the special geometries of the bistatic radar, we first establish the precise echo signal (PES) model to describe the radar echoes for high-speed targets in a space–air-based bistatic radar system. By analyzing the mismatch effect within the pulse and the migration between pulses, we have obtained the mathematic relationship between the scale factor, inner-pulse Doppler shift, range, equivalent velocity, and acceleration. Following that, we perceive that the parameters of the matched filter are related to the target motion parameters, i.e., a priori unknown, which inspires us to propose an iterative coherent integration method to achieve the intrapulse and interpulse integration. A PES model matched filter with initial parameters is defined and a roughly motion parameter estimation is acquired by the PES model-based Keystone transform (PES-KT) and inner-pulse chirp Fourier transform (CFT). The estimated parameters are used for matched filter construction and coherent integration. This process is performed over multiple iterations to provide an accurate motion parameter result. For the design of present and next-generation spaceborne SAR missions, constantly increasing data rates are being demanded, which impose stringent requirements in terms of onboard memory and downlink capacity. In this scenario, the efficient quantization of SAR raw data is of primary importance since the utilized compression rate is directly related to the volume of data to be stored and transmitted to the ground, and at the same time, it affects the resulting SAR imaging performance. In this article, we introduce the performance-optimized block-adaptive quantization (PO-BAQ), a novel approach for SAR raw data compression that aims at optimizing the resource allocation and, at the same time, the quality of the resulting SAR and InSAR products. This goal is achieved by exploiting the a priori knowledge of the local SAR backscatter statistics, which allows for the generation of high-resolution bitrate maps that can be employed to fulfill a predefined performance requirement. Analyses of experimental TanDEM-X interferometric data are presented, which demonstrates the potential of the proposed method as a helpful tool for performance budget definition and data rate optimization of present and future SAR missions. To develop a 3-D imaging synthetic aperture radar(SAR) algorithm, a theoretical expression for a Fourier transform of data cube is required. In this article, we introduce a function representing the Fourier transform of 3-D SAR data cube. The function is derived using the method of stationary phase and similar to the one used for 2-D data matrix. For verification and evaluation, a 3-D range migration algorithm using this function for bulk compression is examined. The simulation results based on the parameters of an experimental terahertz indoor SAR testbed show that the algorithm can well focus the 3-D image and, hence, verify the derived function. The image quality assessments such as spatial resolutions and peak sidelobe ratio are used to further evaluate the function and the algorithm. The concept of sub-terahertz (sub-THz) imaging and recognition of space objects by a satellite-based inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) is proposed and analyzed in this article. Operation at sub-THz frequencies in the band 200–400 GHz benefits from wide available bandwidth, high sensitivity to surface texture, and very small target features, and requires an antenna of small physical size. A feasibility study is presented based on use case scenarios of the relative motion of monitoring satellite and observed objects. Expected resolutions, power budget, and oscillator stability requirements in this frequency band are discussed. Image formation methods are proposed and evaluated with simulations. A simple electromagnetic modeling capability is proposed to create a comprehensive dataset of sub-THz ISAR images, with the orientation and aspect angles seen by the sensors, which can be used to train semantic classifiers. Due to the employment of frequency increment across the array elements, frequency-diverse array (FDA) produces a jointly range-angle-time-dependent beampattern, which finds wide applicability in improving the target detection performance and imaging resolution capability. By the exploitation of the multifrequency transmission across elements, this article proposes an FDA-based space–time–frequency deceptive jamming approach against spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) by using the range-Doppler algorithm (RDA) for high-resolution imaging process. We analyze the range-azimuth distribution of false targets generated by the FDA jammer and then reveal the controllability of the number and locations of false targets by adjusting the frequency increment and the number of FDA elements. In order to set the FDA jammer parameters properly, we derive the minimum/maximum allowable frequency increment, the maximum number of elements and maximum azimuth offset by the ambiguity function, and Doppler frequency analysis. Nowadays, Sentinel-1 (S-1) synthetic aperture radars (SARs) operating in wave mode and the real aperture radar (RAR) called Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring (SWIM) onboard the China-France Oceanography SATellite (CFOSAT) are the only two kinds of spaceborne radars providing directional ocean wave information globally. To quantify the absolute uncertainties in the swell wave heights of a specific wave system (Hss) observed from these two spaceborne sensors, a triple colocation error model is exploited via WaveWatch III (WW3) wave model hindcasts for the first time. After implementing spatiotemporal collocation, cross-assigning swell partitions, and rejecting suspicious data, a database of the optimal-matched Hss triplets (S-1, SWIM, and WW3) is determined over a one-year period (June 2020–June 2021). Qualitatively, traditional dual intercomparisons indicate the inconsistency between the Hss from both SAR and RAR radars in terms of systematic biases. Furthermore, the triple collocated error analysis quantitatively reveals that, at a global scale, SWIM onboard CFOSAT has the least uncertainty in Hss [~0.2-m root mean square error (RMSE) and ~11% scatter index (SI)] compared with S-1 SAR (0.35–0.50-m RMSE and 17%–26% SI depending on incidence modes) and WW3, under the assumption that the random errors of the three data sources are independent, indicating that the newly launched SWIM instrument is an invaluable resource of directional wave information for the scientific community. The results are discussed with respect to regional error characteristics along with a feasible explanation of error sources. Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is a promising field with a diverse set of applications. Polarimetric GNSS-R has been shown to be sensitive to different land parameters, such as freeze/thaw, crop growth, or soil moisture. In this article, the polarimetric scenario of a GNSS reflection is defined, and the theoretical basis and the algorithm to retrieve the Stokes parameters of a GNSS-R signal are proposed. The presented algorithms are validated using data collected by the two linear orthogonal polarization channels of the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) radar antenna working as GNSS-R, known as SMAP-Reflectometry (SMAP- $R$). The Stokes parameter retrieval is presented for the SMAP- $R$ case, and the receiver phase offset and intensity are calibrated. The same calibration procedure proposed by the CYclone GNSS (CYGNSS) mission is applied to the SMAP- $R$ first Stokes parameter, allowing the retrieval of the normalized bistatic radar cross Section (NBRCS) of such measurement. Polarization information can greatly improve the ability of detection, parameter retrieval, and classification for entomological radar. In recent, the instantaneous fully polarimetric measurement technique is used in entomological radar, so as to relax the restriction of invariant orientation during observation compared to the typical vertical-looking radar with linear-polarized rotation configuration. However, the fully polarimetric measurement is based on a multichannels’ radar system, and the imbalance and crosstalk between channels, namely, polarimetric errors, will severely affect the measurement of the polarimetric scattering matrix (PSM). Thus, polarimetric calibration is essential to obtain the accurate polarization information of targets. In contrast to inefficient and manual calibration methods, a data-driven polarimetric calibration method is proposed based on the assumption of reciprocity and bilateral symmetry of insects in this article. The polarimetric errors are elaborately decomposed into two components, which could be estimated by reciprocity and bilateral symmetry, respectively. In addition, because the proposed method is data-driven, the calibration process could be automatically executed to compensate for the temporal-variant polarimetric errors induced by temperature change and, thus, suitable for the long-term operation of entomological radar. Simulations and experiments are carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed calibration method. Results show that it could achieve high accuracy when the number of insects used as calibrators is large enough. Precipitation nowcasting is an important task, which can be used in numerous applications. The key challenge of the task lies in radar echo map prediction. Previous studies leverage the convolutional recurrent neural network (ConvRNN) to address the problem. However, the approaches are built upon mean square losses, and the results tend to have inaccurate appearances, shapes, and positions for predictions. To alleviate this problem, we explore the idea of adversarial regularization and systematically compare four types of generative adversarial networks (GANs), which are the combinations of GAN/Wasserstein GAN (WGAN) and its multiscale version. Extensive experiments on a real-world radar dataset and four typical meteorological examples are conducted. The results validate the effectiveness of adversarial regularization. The developed models show superior performances over the existing prediction approaches in the majority of circumstances. Moreover, we find that the WGAN regularization often delivers better results than the GAN regularization due to its robustness, and the multiscale WGAN, in general, performs the best among all the methods. The total mean square slope (mss) of large-scale (in comparison with the scale of radar wavelengths) ocean waves can describe the roughness of the ocean surface. This important parameter has found many applications and can be determined by the dependence of large-scale mss on azimuthal angles. The Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring instrument onboard the China France Oceanography Satellite (CFOSAT) can provide a 2-D normalized backscattering radar cross section (NRCS) for 2-D global ocean-surface wave detection. In this article, the 2-D NRCS is used to calculate the total large-scale mss via two methods. The first method is constructed from regression, while the second scheme is derived from a three-solution method. Finally, the total large-scale mss is calculated using these methods, and the map of the distribution of the global total mss is presented for the first time. Our results show that the two sources of total large-scale mss obtained are consistent with each other. Exploring polarimetric diversity of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is directly applicable to conventional monostatic cases. For this, the most used convention is the backscatter alignment. While establishing important advantages for the monostatic case (possibility to have equal values on the cross-polarimetric channels), it has been proven to introduce some difficulties for the bistatic case. This appears in relation to the so-called conjugate similarity operation, when (mathematically) asymmetric scattering matrices occur. In this article, we propose the detailed algorithm which provides a solution to the conjugate similarity operation, in the case of general scattering matrices. The proposed algorithm is based on the real representation (RR) matrix transformation. Furthermore, we investigate the characterization of canonical bistatic scatterers (three elementary targets). Raw bistatic polarimetric signals are obtained using simulations with a computationally electromagnetic (EM) software, capable of complete EM analysis. The eigenvalue classification illustrates the potential of additional information brought using the proposed RR scattering matrix (RRSM). Current spaceborne wind scatterometers have shown failure due to mechanical wear from moving parts used to conically scan a directive beam. In order to eliminate the risk of mechanical rotation failure, an antenna design with no moving parts that achieve the conical beam sweep is desirable. In this article, a lightweight, 3-D-printed, inhomogeneous lens antenna is presented as an all-electronic alternative. Compared to the previous on-axis fed lenses, the real-life application requiring conical scanning necessitates significant developments regarding the synthesis, optimization, and prototyping of the off-axis fed lens. The lens antenna is designed using curved-ray geometrical optics coupled to particle swarm optimization to determine the optimum lens surface shapes and material inhomogeneity while obtaining a design with minimum volume and therefore mass. An 18 cm lens is designed using this approach. Instructions on how to 3-D-print the inhomogeneous lens are given using a unit cell design, which permits additive manufacturing using fused deposition modeling (FDM) techniques. The lens is measured for far-field pattern performance at various locations along with the ring-shaped focus of the azimuthally symmetric lens. The measurements agree well with predictions obtained by full-wave simulations. These all-electronic alternatives are expected to prolong the lifetime of future spaceborne wind scatterometers. Earth-based repeat-pass synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) is a powerful tool to obtain the high-precision lunar terrain and deformation information, due to the short revisit period as well as the all-weather, long-time, and large-coverage characteristics of radar lunar observation. In this article, the baseline formation mechanism is investigated. Theoretical analyses show that the interferometric baselines mainly come from the lunar libration; however, the lunar libration may also result in a significant change of baselines and further lead to serious geometric decorrelation. To address this problem and ensure the Earth-based repeat-pass InSAR of the Moon, the precise relative motion model between the radar and the lunar target, considering lunar libration, is established, and the subradar point (SRP) wagging phenomenon is analyzed. Then, to evaluate the effects of SRP wagging on InSAR coherence, a geometric decorrelation model based on azimuth angle and incident angle is proposed. Based on that, the spatial–temporal baseline for Earth-based repeat-pass InSAR of the Moon is analyzed based on numerical simulation. Results show that the temporal baseline has obvious periodicity with a cycle of about 27 days. When the temporal baseline is an integral multiple of 27, the spatial baseline usually has the minimum value and the geometric decorrelation effect is relatively slight. Moreover, using the geometric decorrelation criteria, we examine the effects of radar frequency, position, and target location on the quantity of viable interferometric pairs, which has guiding significance for the selection of radar system parameters, radar position, and lunar target area. Global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-based passive bistatic radar (PBR) has many advantages benefiting from the bistatic configuration and the excellent properties of the GNSS signals. In this article, the possibility of moving target indication (MTI) using a GNSS-based PBR is analyzed and illustrated by experiments. The power budget is first evaluated to investigate the capabilities and limitations of the GNSS-based PBR. Due to the low power density of GNSS signals, long-time integration is required to achieve long-range surveillance. In our previous work, a Radon Fourier transform (RFT)-based long-time integration algorithm has been proposed for GNSS-based PBR. However, the RFT-based methods are computationally inefficient. In this article, a novel MTI algorithm based on high frame rate image sequence (HFRIS) is introduced to the GNSS-based PBR. Benefiting from the avoiding of the iterative multidimensional parameter searching, it has a higher computational efficiency than the RFT-based methods. At the same time, the possibility of multistatic positioning for moving targets using the GNSS-based PBR is analyzed. It is shown that the absolute position of the target in three dimensions could be determined if at least three satellites are utilized to measure the range delay of the target return. To confirm our analysis, experiments are conducted which detects the airplanes using the GPS signals as illuminators of opportunity. The collected data are processed by both the RFT-based method and the HFRIS-based method. Both methods have successfully detected the airplane target at a distance of about 5 km and the HFRIS-based method shows a far better performance in terms of processing efficiency. The multistatic positioning experiment is also conducted and the estimated position of the target is well consistent with the values acquired by the flight record, which shows the potential of the GNSS-based PBR on multistatic operations. In this study, we address the challenging problem of automatic detection of transient deformation of the Earth’s crust in time series of differential satellite radar [interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR)] images. The detection of these events is important for a wide range of natural hazard and solid earth applications, and InSAR is an ideal data source for this purpose due to its frequent and global observational coverage. However, the size of this dataset precludes a systematic manual analysis, and a low signal-to-noise ratio makes this task difficult. We present a novel method to address this problem. This approach requires the development of a novel network architecture to take advantage of the unique structure of the InSAR dataset. Our unsupervised deep learning model learns the “normal” unlabeled spatiotemporal patterns of background noise signals in 3-D InSAR datasets and learns the relationship between the input difference images and the underlying unknown set of individual 2-D fields of noise from which the InSAR images are constructed. The detection head of our pipeline consists of two complementary methods, semivariogram analysis and density-based clustering. To evaluate, we test and compare three increasingly complex network architectures: compact, deep, and bi-deep. The analysis demonstrates that the bi-deep architecture is the most accurate, and so it is used in the final detection pipeline [autoencoder long short-term memory-based anomaly detector of deformation in InSAR (ALADDIn)]. The analysis of experimental results is based on the detection of a synthetic deformation test case, achieving a 91.25% overall performance accuracy. Bistatic scattering from rough surfaces is typically approached through the analysis of the scattered field in the conventional H and V polarization basis, which coincides with the zenith and azimuth unit vectors in a spherical reference frame. This study delves into the impacts of different choices of the transmit and receive linear basis on the performance and design of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mission receive-only companion. This article formalizes the rotation of the scattered wave orientation at the antenna axes of the companion with respect to the transmitted one and introduces a novel set of linear polarizations, named principal polarizations, in transmit and receive, deemed more suited to represent the scattering mechanisms of rough surfaces. Such a set is defined by the polarization bases that maximize the radar cross section. It is shown that the theoretical estimates from the proposed geometrical framework provide a good agreement with analytical and numerical simulations, performed considering state-of-the-art numerical solutions. In addition, this article promotes the hypothesis that a bistatic radar configuration, defined through the conventional H and V linear basis, presents a strong similarity, from a target information retrieval standpoint, to a monostatic compact $\varphi $ -pol mode, i.e., with the transmission of a linear polarization rotated by an angle $\varphi $. The rotation $\varphi $ varies over the swath and as a function of satellite separation. For baselines of 250–300 km, such as those envisioned by the European Space Agency (ESA) Harmony Earth Explorer candidate, and for steep incidence angles, an equivalent $\pi /8$ -pol can be achieved for rough surfaces. This article presents a high-gain slotted ridge waveguide antenna array (SRWAA) with inductive diaphragms, which can realize a wide-sector beam with a low sidelobe simultaneously. The proposed antenna can cover a wide detection range and avoid interference from other directions. The expected excitation distribution for the antenna array is extracted through a beamforming method. To reduce the influence of the dispersion phenomenon on signal quality, inductive diaphragms are inserted into the sidewall of the ridge waveguide, which is fully analyzed from the point of the equivalent circuit. A cut-off-mode power divider is utilized, which can control the power ratio flexibly. An SRWAA working at 24.125 GHz, including a six-way feeding network, and a $6\times24$ slot array with the size of 330 mm $\times66.8$ mm is designed and fabricated. The measured sidelobe level (SLL) and half-power beamwidth (HPBW) in the elevation plane are −19.6 dB and 54.41°, with the counterparts in the azimuth plane −29.8 dB and 3.15°, respectively. The measured peak gain is 22.3 dBi at 24.125 GHz. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated ones. This is the first presentation of quasi-synchronous spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) high-resolution images acquired from C-band Radar Constellation Mission (RCM) and RADARSAT-2 consisting of quad-polarization (HH + HV + VH + VV) wide-swath observations of Hurricane Epsilon. These measurements clearly show that the denoised HV- and VH-polarized normalized radar cross sections (NRCSs) have great consistency. NRCS values at HV- and VH-polarizations are more sensitive to wind speeds and less sensitive to incidence angles or wind directions than those at HH and VV for hurricane force winds. For large incidence angles and high wind speeds, the sensitivity of HH-polarized NRCS to wind speed is higher than that of VV. HH- and VV-polarized NRCSs gradually lose wind direction dependency at high winds. It is notable that the time interval between the two SAR acquisitions is only 3 min. This allows for a direct comparison of HV- and VH-polarized images to investigate the variations in high-resolution backscattering within the hurricane vortex, thereby revealing the most dynamical areas. An asymmetric dynamic is observed around the eye of Hurricane Epsilon, based on positive and negative differences (VH–HV) in the western and eastern parts of the eye. The impacts of rain on quad-polarized NRCS are also examined using collocated rain rates from the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) and wind speeds from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP). Significant rain-induced NRCS attenuations are about 1.7 dB for HH and VV, and 2.2 dB for HV and VH, when the rain rate is 20 mm/h. These attenuations are associated with rain-induced turbulence and atmospheric absorption. This work shows that the collocated RCM and RADARSAT-2 hurricane observations provide a unique analysis of synoptic and joint C-band measurements of the ocean surface in quad-polarization; this is noteworthy in view of preparations for the next generation of dual-polarization scatterometer (SCA) onboard second-generation meteorological operational satellite program (MetOp-SG). A new algorithm is proposed, which estimates two parameters of the particle size distribution (PSD) at each range bin from the global precipitation measurement’s (GPM’s) dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) data. The equation that expresses the relationship of the PSD parameters between adjacent range bins is derived. By including the attenuation effect within the bin in the discretized equation, the new algorithm alleviates the double-solution problem when attenuation within the bin is sufficiently large. The stability of the solutions to the equation depends on the value of the mean diameter $D_{m}$ and its gradient with respect to the range in the case of liquid precipitation. There is a critical diameter above which the backward processing of the equation provides a stable or moderately diverging solution, unlike the forward processing that often gives unstable solutions. To provide a set of initial conditions without using the surface reference technique (SRT) in the backward processing, an initialization method using the Hitschfeld–Bordan (HB) attenuation correction method is proposed and tested. It is challenging to estimate satellite targets’ absolute attitude and size with limited observational data. This article proposes an innovative way to jointly estimate satellite targets’ absolute attitude and size in the 3-D stable coordinates based on inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) image interpretation with only one image. By taking advantage of the rectangular solar panels commonly equipped on satellites, this article extracts solar panel’s principal components, line features, and phase features of single ISAR imagery with principal component analysis (PCA), radon transform (RT), and minimum-entropy (ME)-based autofocus method, respectively. The projection relationship between these features and the absolute attitude and size of the satellite are established separately. Through multi-features fusion, a joint parameter estimation optimization function is established. This optimization is solved iteratively by the quasi-Newton method. The attitude and size parameters can be estimated simultaneously and rapidly, realizing the satellite state estimation under limited observation data. Accurate and timely estimation of precipitation is critical for issuing hazard warnings (e.g., for flash floods or landslides). Current remotely sensed precipitation products have a few hours of latency, associated with the acquisition and processing of satellite data. By applying a robust nowcasting system to these products, it is (in principle) possible to mitigate this latency and improve their applicability, value, and impact. However, the development of such a system is complicated by the chaotic nature of the atmosphere, lack of sufficient knowledge about the evolution of precipitation systems based on previous observations, and the consequent rapid changes that can occur in the structures of precipitation systems. In this work, we develop two approaches (hereafter referred to as NowCasting-nets) that use recurrent and convolutional deep neural network (DNN) structures to address the challenge of precipitation nowcasting. A total of five models are trained using global precipitation measurement (GPM) Integrated MultisatellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) precipitation data over the Eastern contiguous United States (CONUS) and then tested against independent data for the Eastern and Western CONUS. The models were designed to provide forecasts with a lead time of up to 1.5 h, and by using a feedback loop approach, the ability of the models to extend the forecast time to 4.5 h was also investigated. The performance of the models was compared against the random forest (RF) and linear regression (LR) machine learning (ML) methods, a persistence benchmark (BM) that uses the most recent observation as the forecast, and optical flow (OF). Independent IMERG observations were used as a reference, and experiments were conducted to examine both overall statistics and case studies involving specific precipitation events. Overall, the forecasts provided by the NowCasting-net models are superior, with the convolutional NowCasting-net (CNC) achieving 42%, 24%, 18%, and 16% improvement on the test set mean squared error (MSE) over the BM, LR, RF, and OF models, respectively, for the Eastern CONUS. Results of further testing over the Western CONUS (which was not part of the training data) are encouraging and indicate the ability of the proposed models to learn the dynamics of precipitation systems without having explicit access to motion vectors and other auxiliary features and then to generalize to different hydro-geo-climatic conditions. Multifrequency (MF) polarization synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) systems can obtain more abundant and continuous earth resource information than single-frequency ones and have been widely used in the remote sensing community. However, there are relatively a few researches for the fine MF PolSAR image classification, which is an important part of remote sensing image interpretation. The main focus currently is on the single-frequency part. Therefore, for dual-frequency PolSAR image classification, this article proposes the dual-frequency attention fusion network (DFAF-Net). It is based on frequency-aware attention and adaptive feature fusion to improve classification performance. First, the dual-frequency PolSAR data is input into the joint feature extraction (JFE) module to obtain the joint feature representation. Meanwhile, two frequency-aware attention block (FAB) modules with the same structure are constructed, which, respectively, generate frequency-specific attention masks based on the guidance of different frequency data. Subsequently, these masks are used to weigh the joint features to highlight the description of different frequency-aware importance. The activated frequency-aware features can fully mine and utilize the complementary information provided by different frequencies, thereby enhancing the discrimination of similar landcover categories. Finally, the adaptive feature fusion block (AFFB) module is utilized to adaptively aggregate different frequency-aware features multiple times, which can effectively eliminate information differences. The obtained fusion features are more compact within classes and separable between classes, thereby effectively improving the classification performance. Experiments on three measured spaceborne and airborne dual-frequency PolSAR datasets verify that DFAF-Net can better perceive frequency characteristics and fully mine the complementary. Therefore, the classification accuracy is effectively enhanced, and the inaccuracy of single-frequency classification can be eliminated. Meanwhile, due to the introduction of the attention module, the classification performance of the proposed DFAF-Net is more competitive than the related deep learning networks. This article outlines the archetype of a novel SpaceBorne Radar (SBR) in the Ka-band for space situational awareness (SSA) based on a code-division multiplexing (CDM) multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) payload transceiver. Considering small-size hypervelocity debris, the functional architecture of the fully polarimetric SBR is described, including key comparisons with previous works based on single-input–multiple-output (SIMO) configurations. SBR operations are clarified via timing hierarchies in surveillance mode, the complex data hypercube structure, and the low pulse repetition frequency (L-PRF) range and range rate search (RRRS) entailing a track while simultaneous search (TWSS) contacts collection strategy. Ancillary details on the SBR functional architecture provide paramount insights to ponder critical MIMO aspects and pave the way for key research and development efforts. This article reports the Phase A study results of the interferometric extension of the high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) mission with three MirrorSAR satellites. According to the MirrorSAR concept, small, low-cost, transponder-like receive-only satellites without radar signal demodulation, digitization, memory storage, downlink, and synchronization are added to the planned German X-band HRWS mission. The MirrorSAR satellites fly a triple helix orbit in close formation around the HRWS orbit and span multiple single-pass interferometric baselines. A comprehensive system engineering and performance analysis is provided that includes orbit formation, MirrorLink, Doppler steering, antenna pattern and swath design, multi-static echo window timing, SAR performance, height performance, and coverage analysis. The overall interferometric system design analysis of Phase A is presented. The predicted performance of the global digital elevation model (DEM) is improved by one order of magnitude compared to presently available global DEM products such as the TanDEM-X DEM. When an early warning radar installed in a spaceborne platform works in a down-looking mode to detect a low-altitude flying target, the severely broadened main-lobe clutter cannot be ignored, which will cause the deterioration of the moving target detection capability. To deal with this problem, a space–time adaptive processing (STAP) technique is proposed for effective clutter suppression based on the spatial–temporal 2-D joint filtering. However, the full-dimensional optimal STAP encounters the challenges of high computational complexity and large training sample requirement. Therefore, the dimension-reduced STAP technique becomes necessary. This article proposes a novel dimension-reduced STAP algorithm based on spatial–temporal 2-D sliding window processing. First, several sets of spatial–temporal data are obtained by using spatial–temporal 2-D sliding window. Then, for each set of data, the 2-D discrete Fourier transform is performed to transform the echo data into the angle-Doppler domain. Finally, jointly adaptive processing is performed to realize the clutter suppression. Compared with the conventional STAP algorithms, the improvements of this method over the existing methods are: 1) the proposed method requires fewer training samples due to the 2-D localization processing and 2) the proposed method can obtain the better clutter suppression performance with lower computational complexity. Due to the small size of foreign object debris (FOD) and varied complex weather conditions, the detection of FOD on airport runways is a great challenge. Radar is an important method for detecting FOD targets. However, almost all the existing systems are based on real apertures, which have disadvantages such as low azimuth resolution and susceptibility to rain interference. Here, an innovative FOD detection radar system based on arc-scanning synthetic aperture radar (AS-SAR) technology, the AS-SAR based FOD detection system (AS-FODR), achieves omnidirectional coverage with a very high azimuth resolution and the suppression of flicker clutter, such as rain drops in severe weather. According to the radar imaging simulation of a scene under rainy conditions and the information processing analysis of field experiments, a prototype system was built, and an efficient data process flow was proposed. The attitude and size of satellite targets are essential information for their activity analysis. This article proposes a novel approach to estimate the absolute attitude and size of satellite targets in the 3-D stable coordinates based on inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) image interpretation. In an ISAR image of a satellite, the satellite’s body is chosen as an individual structure segmented from each ISAR image by employing pix2pix generative adversarial network (Pix2pixGAN). By exploring the shape feature of the satellite body with principal component analysis (PCA), the satellite attitude and size are estimated jointly through solving an optimization based on the gradient iteration method. The optimization is established by bridging range-Doppler (RD) images and the target feature parameters (attitude and size) with the accommodation of target trajectory information and the ISAR geometric projection model. In the experiments, the simulation data are generated from real satellite orbital parameters and the computer-aided-design (CAD) models of two satellite targets: TianGong (TG) and KeyHole (KH). Compared with the factorization-based reconstruction method, the proposed method can estimate the attitude and size of the satellite simultaneously and has a higher size estimation accuracy.
