AbstractStrawberry production is significantly affected by the climatic conditions (mainly light, temperature, and humidity). Thus, management of climate is of utmost importance for improving the plant growth, yield, and quality of strawberries. Keeping this in view, a study was undertaken to study the impact of greenhouse climate on performance of strawberry cultivated in soilless media under time-differential supplemental lighting. This research included three levels of supplemental lighting (I) viz. 235 (I1), 169 (I2), 132 μ mol m−2 s−1 (I3), and 3 levels of photoperiod (P) viz. 12 (P1), 14 (P2), and 16 h (P3) replicated thrice in a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) layout. The supplemental lighting of 132 μ mol m−2s−1 and photoperiod of 16 h resulted in highest fruit yield of 450.0 g/plant with an average value of 408.9 g/plant. The results indicated a significant increase in yield, water use efficiency (WUE) and fertilizer use efficiency (FUE) of camarosa strawberry with decrease in supplemental lighting from 235 to 132 μ mol m−2s−1 and increase in photoperiod from 12 to 16 h. Thus, subjecting the camarosa strawberry plants to light in the range of 362.5–430.6 μ mol m−2s−1 (including supplemental light of 132 μ mol m−2s−1) for about 16 h, keeping the temperature and humidity in the range of 19.5–25.0 °C and 65.0–75.0%, respectively, is desired to record the improved plant growth and quality fruit production, when cultivated in soilless media inside a greenhouse. Research on strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) was carried out in greenhouse in 2022-2023, arranging a 4 x 2 factorial experiment, consisting of four levels of electrical conductivity of the nutrient solutions (1.2, 1.7, 2.2, and 2.7 dS m-1) and application of gypsum (without application – control and application). The plants were grown in coconut fibre substrate from late October to early June. The 2.2 dS m-1 ECsol resulted in the highest yield, whereas the highest values of dry matter and soluble solids were recorded under 2.7 dS m-1 ECsol. Gypsum application resulted in the increase of dry matter, soluble solids, firmness and colour components. The 2.2 and 2.7 dS m-1 ECsol led to the highest levels of hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidant activities as well as polyphenols and vitamin C. From the research carried out on strawberry grown in coconut fibre, it arose that the 2.2 dS m-1 EC of the nutrient solution showed the best effect on yield, but it did not generally differ from 2.7 dS m-1 regarding the quality of the 'fruits'. Gypsum treatment represents an effective strategy to improve some important qualitative characteristics of strawberry 'fruits', under the perspective of sustainable management of crop systems.

Purpose: Soilless cultivation systems (SCS) are farming cultivation methods using inert or organic substrate in place of soil. These systems are considered promising from an environmental sustainability perspective, as they can reduce the amount of water, fertilizers, and other substances harmful to the environment. The aim of this study is to consolidate the current knowledge of environmental impact assessment in the soilless systems context and shed light on the methodological choices regarding the LCA method implementation. Methods: A three-step research method was employed, starting with the identification of the nomenclature of SCS via an overview of the literature, followed by a review of reviews where Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been identified as the most used method to assess the environmental performance of a system. Such a preliminary step served for the third step, which allowed the creation of a search query combining the various soilless techniques and LCA. From Scopus and Web of Science, 56 articles were selected, and methodological data was extracted according to FLAVIA-LCT framework. Data was then analyzed using Excel and VOSviewer. Systematic analysis was preceded by a bibliometric and network analysis, as well as by a technical analysis of the systems found in the selected articles. Results and discussion: Drip irrigation in conjunction with solid substrates, mostly perlite, is the most common SCS method, while tomatoes and lettuce are the most studied crop species. Most systems set in a rural environment had commercial orientations, while urban systems had mostly experimental ones. Most of the assessed systems are set in Spain. Attributional LCA models are most prevalent, with mass-related functional units (FUs) and cradle-to-farm gate system boundaries. The production phase is the most impactful, with electricity, fertilizers, and structure materials being the main contributors. Conclusions: LCA studies displayed common methodological choices concerning attributional model, FUs, and system boundaries, reflecting a main focus on production. Consequential approaches were limitedly applied, and, in these cases, assumptions were often made for transportation and material lifespan due to data unavailability. Sensitivity analyses were only performed by half of the selected articles. Given the rapid growth of the Cannabis industry, developing practices for producing young plants with limited genetic variation and efficient growth is crucial to achieving reliable and successful cultivation results. This study presents a multi-faceted experiment series analyzing propagation techniques for evaluating proficiency in the growth and development of Cannabis vegetative cuttings. This research encompasses various (1) soilless propagation methods including aeroponics, horticultural (phenolic) foam, and rockwool; (2) transplant timings; (3) aeroponic spray intervals; and (4) aeroponic reservoir nutrient concentrations, to elucidate their impact on rooting and growth parameters amongst two Cannabis cultivars. Aeroponics was as effective as, and in some cases more effective than, soilless propagation media for root development and plant growth. In aeroponic systems, continuous spray intervals, compared to intermittent, result in a better promotion of root initiation and plant growth. Moreover, raised nutrient concentrations in aeroponic propagation demonstrated greater rooting and growth. The effects of experimental treatment were dependent on the cultivar and sampling day. These findings offer valuable insights into how various propagation techniques and growth parameters can be tailored to enhance the production of vegetative cuttings. These results hold critical implications for cultivators intending to achieve premium harvests through efficient propagule methods and optimization strategies in the competitive Cannabis industry. Ultimately, our findings suggest that aeroponic propagation, compared to alternative soilless methods, is a rapid and efficient process for cultivating vegetative cuttings of Cannabis and offers sustainable advantages in resource conservation and preservation. Rice cultivation without land as an urban farming method is carried out to produce food in a subsistence manner. This experiment aimed to examine the response of rice plants to non-soil planting media based on alternate wetting-drying irrigation. This work was conducted at the screen house in Sumberjeruk Village, Jember Regency (8°07'42.9" S and 113°47'09.3" E) from January to May 2022, using a factorial complete randomized design (crd) with 2-factors and 3-replications. The soilless medium (husk:water) as the first factor consists of 4 compositions (v/v): 0:1, 1:4, 1:6, and 1:8 (total volume 25-L), while variety as the second factor consists of Inpari 46 and IR 64. The results showed that the combination treatment (husk: water) 1:6 and Inpari 46 had a significant effect on the number of productive tillers (25.17 stems) and grain weight per hill (34.07 g). The planting medium of non-soil husk: water 1:6 gave no significant value to husk: water 1:4 on the total number of grains (124.21 grains) and full grains (83.52 grains). The Inpari 46 varieties showed the highest value for the total number of grains (133.07 grains), the number of full grains (84.88 grains), and the weight of 1000-seeds (22.43 g). Using husks and water as a planting medium in the right ratio was an ideal medium for soilless rice-cultivation because the husks are thought to be able to supply oxygen to the media. Agronomic biofortification of crops is a promising approach for the accumulation of Si in plant organs and can be achieved through the application of Si-containing fertilizers in the nutrient solution (NS) using a soilless technique. In the present research, a local variety of Cucumis melo L. called Carosello and two tomato hybrids, 'Alfa 200' (TA) and 'Versus' (TV), were cultivated in a floating system with three levels of Si (0, 50, and 100 mg·L−1) in the NS with the aim to study the Si translocation/accumulation in leaves, stems, and roots of these genotypes. In general, by adding Si to the NS, Si accumulation in plants increased. Regarding Si translocation, it was found that Carosello exhibited a better translocation capacity than tomato hybrids, and Si movement from roots to shoots was very much dependent on tomato genotypes. With the highest Si content in the NS, TA had a similar Si concentration in leaves and stems, while TV showed a greater Si concentration in leaves. In conclusion, Carosello landrace is confirmed as a good Si accumulator, while the tomato is confirmed as a species with low Si accumulation capacity. Bark particle screening is a critical secondary processing stage when engineering bark-based horticultural substrates. There are several factors that can influence bark screening efficiency; however, the bark moisture content immediately before screening may have the largest impact. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect bark moisture content has on bark particle separation across two commonly used screen apertures and the subsequent static physical properties of the screened bark. The moisture contents examined herein ranged from 50%, 55%, 60%, 65%, and 70% and were gravimetrically determined. The screen apertures used were 6.3 mm and 9.5 mm. The results showed that moisture content has a considerable effect on both screening yield and the physical properties. Generally, as moisture content increased, bark yield (i.e., bark processed through the aperture) decreased. Moreover, as moisture content increased, the proportions of fine bark particles adhered to coarse bark increased, shifting the air-filled porosity: water-holding capacity of the substrate. In summation, the drier moisture content had the greatest (i.e., most equal) separation, regardless of screen aperture. Future research should identify the interaction between feed rate and moisture content.

Abstract Background Strawberries are one of the most widely cultivated fruits in the world, and their popularity continues to grow due to their unique taste, high nutritional value, and numerous health benefits. The success of strawberry cultivation depends largely on the quality of the growing media used. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in soilless media as a sustainable alternative to traditional soil-based growing methods. This study aimed to compare the effect of different growing media, both soil and soilless (Hydroponic Production System) media, on the fruit quality and phytochemical contents of two cultivars of strawberry (Yellow Wonder and Camarosa) in a greenhouse. Results The values of Fruit weight, fruit firmness, and SSC were higher in soilless media than in soil media. In addition, ʻCamarosaʼ was higher than ʻYellow Wonderʼ in these characteristics. The rates of glucose and fructose were higher in soil media than soilless media, and ʻYellow Wonderʼ was higher than ʻCamarosaʼ in the rates of glucose and fructose. The values of total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity were higher in soil media, and also ʻYellow Wonderʼ was found to have more total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity than ʻCamarosaʼ. In terms of mineral contents, ʻYellow Wonderʼ had higher values than ʻCamrosaʼ in both media. When the results of the study were examined in general, Camarosa red strawberry variety was found to be higher than ʻYellow Wonderʼ in pomological characteristics. Conclusions Pomological values increased in both strawberry cultivar in soilless media. In terms of phytochemical properties, the ʻYellow Wonderʼ had higher values than the ʻCamarosaʼ. Also, Phytochemical contents were higher in the soil media compared to the soilless media.

Aquaponics is defined as a sustainable and integrated system that combines fish aquaculture and hydroponic plant production in the same recirculated water loop. A recent study using high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies highlighted that microbial communities from an aquaponic system could control one of the most problematic pathogens in soilless lettuce culture, namely, Pythium aphanidermatum. Therefore, this study aims at isolating the microorganisms responsible for this biocontrol action. Based on the most promising genera identified by HTS, an innovative strategy for isolating and testing original biocontrol agents from aquaponic water was designed to control P. aphanidermatum. Eighty-two bacterial strains and 18 fungal strains were isolated, identified by Sanger sequencing, and screened in vivo to control damping-off of lettuce seeds caused by P. aphanidermatum. Out of these 100 isolates, the eight most efficacious ones were selected and further tested individually to control root rot disease caused by the same pathogen at a later stage of lettuce growth. Strains SHb30 (Sphingobium xenophagum), G2 (Aspergillus flavus), and Chito13 (Mycolicibacterium fortuitum) decreased seed damping-off at a better rate than a propamocarb fungicide and a Pseudomonas chlororaphis registered biocontrol agent did. In root rot bioassays, lettuce mortality was prevented by applying strains G2 and Chito13, which were at least as efficacious as the fungicide or biopesticide controls. Lettuce disease symptoms and mortality were eradicated by strain SHb30 in the first bioassay, but not in the second one. These results show that aquaponic systems are promising sources of original biocontrol agents, and that HTS-guided strategies could represent interesting approaches to identify new biocontrol agents. Sustainable agriculture aims to meet the needs of the people in the present as well as in the future. The inadequate supply of vegetables raises dependency on imports for the growing population. To reduce import dependency, effective approaches in urban farming are emerging. One of the approaches is the application of hydrogel as a growth substrate in urban farming. This comparative study focuses on the characterisation of cellulose-based hydrogel sourced from cotton and its application as a seed germination medium in comparison to soil and perlite. Hydrogel is prepared by using cotton linter, sodium hydroxide, urea and epichlorohydrin as the cross-linker. Analyses to characterize soil, perlite and hydrogel (cryogel) were performed through gel fraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Seedling growth performance for four plant species (Ipomoea aquatica, Brassica juncea, Lactuca sativa, Solanum lycopersicum) was recorded after 15 days on each growth medium. Hydrogel crosslinking strength was at 92.49% based on the gel fraction analysis and the swelling of the hydrogel reached 65.00% in ten days. The FESEM analysis shows the hydrogel has a porous structure. Growth of Ipomoea aquatica in hydrogel medium was better than in soil. Leachate reuse is a helpful tool that contributes to the sustainability of agricultural systems, but it requires previous disinfection. Hydrogen peroxide can be found among the disinfectants frequently applied in ecological production systems. Moreover, it can improve the oxygenation of the root system. The objective of this work was to study its effect on C. fruticosa plants fertigated with leachates. A split-plot design with six treatments, three without an H2O2 supply (S0) and three with an H2O2 supply dosage at 2% (SH2O2), was arranged: raw leachate from C. lanatus (L100), raw leachate from C. lanatus diluted with tap water until EC of 2.5 dS m−1 (LWD), and raw leachate from C. lanatus diluted with standard nutrient solution until EC of 2.5 dS m−1 (LNSD). The results produced data about the evolution of the nutrient and leachate solutions throughout the cultivation period. Morphological (height, leaf number, leaf area, total fresh weight, relative water status, and dry weight) and physiological (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids, chlorophyll a+b, and proline) parameters were studied to reveal the plant response. The efficiency of nutrient utilization was higher with the LWD treatment, and water and nitrogen utilization efficiency decreased under the H2O2 supply. In conclusion, the reuse of diluted leachate is advised for nutritionally undemanding crops, such as C. fruticosa; moreover, the H2O2 supply improved tolerance to salinity and enhanced root growth and Red-Green-Blue (RGB) values. The study was carried out in the research greenhouse, within the Horticultural Products Quality Research Center in 2022. A variety of oak leaf lettuce, Kineta, was grown on the mattresses filled with perlite. The nutrient solution was administered in 3 concentrations (EC), namely 1.5 mS/cm², 2.5 mS/cm² and 3.5 mS/cm². Three pH levels were used for each EC type. Differences were found between the experimental variants regarding the variety's reaction to these treatments. Climatic conditions are the most important for the development of tomato culture, namely temperature, humidity and the level of carbon dioxide concentration. The study was carried out in research greenhouses, which belongs to the UASVM in Bucharest on variety Cheramy F1. The environmental factors in the greenhouse, temperature, atmospheric humidity, CO2 concentration inside the greenhouse. Also, the obtained productions were registered. In this paper we aimed to demonstrate the difference in production of tomatoes obtained in a culture compartment with normal air conditioning equipment and in a compartment in which the climatic conditions were improved by installing heat pump systems. Tomato is the main vegetable cultivated under soilless culture systems (SCSs); production of organic tomato under SCSs has increased due to consumer demands for healthier and environmentally friendly vegetables. However, organic tomato production under SCSs has been associated with low crop performance and fruit quality defects. These agricultural deficiencies could be linked to alterations in tomato plant microbiota; nonetheless, this issue has not been sufficiently addressed. Thus, the main goal of the present study was to characterize the rhizosphere and phyllosphere of tomato plants cultivated under conventional and organic SCSs. To accomplish this goal, tomato plants grown in commercial greenhouses under conventional or organic SCSs were tested at 8, 26, and 44 weeks after seedling transplantation. Substrate (n = 24), root (n = 24), and fruit (n = 24) composite samples were subjected to DNA extraction and high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The present study revealed that the tomato core microbiota was predominantly constituted by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. Remarkably, six bacterial families, Bacillaceae, Microbacteriaceae, Nocardioidaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Sphingomonadaceae, were shared among all substrate, rhizosphere, and fruit samples. Importantly, it was shown that plants under organic SCSs undergo a dysbiosis characterized by significant changes in the relative abundance of Bradyrhizobiaceae, Caulobacteraceae, Chitinophagaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Erythrobacteraceae, Flavobacteriaceae, Nocardioidaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Streptomycetaceae. These results suggest that microbial alterations in substrates, roots, and fruits could be potential factors in contributing to the crop performance and fruit quality deficiencies observed in organic SCSs. Substrate-grown crops represent approximately 10% of the cropping area of intensive greenhouse horticulture in southern Spain. The vast majority are free draining, in that they do not collect and recirculate drainage. The substantial nutrient loss in drainage contributes to contamination of water bodies. This study examined the effectiveness of dynamic management approaches to appreciably reduce the large nutrient loss associated with free-draining substrate-grown crops. For three tomato crops, grown in substrate, this study (i) compared management of N, P and K based on the ratio of the concentration in drainage to that in the nutrient solution, to conventional management, (ii) derived uptake concentration values for N, P and K throughout the crop cycle, and (iii) evaluated uptake concentration as a nutrition management tool. Ratio-based management reduced the amounts of N, P and K in drainage, in relation to conventional management by 58–61%, 65–80% and 55–77% respectively. The amounts of applied N, P and K were reduced by 22–28%, 37–43%, and 28–34% compared to conventional management. N, P and K concentrations in the applied nutrient solution slightly below the uptake concentration were associated with much lower concentrations in the drainage solution. In contrast, when the applied nutrient concentration exceeded the uptake concentration this was associated with much higher drainage nutrient concentrations. In conclusion, the two nutritional management strategies examined, ratio-based management, and use of uptake concentrations were both associated with reduced nutrient application and a considerable reduction of nutrient loss in drainage. Fruit production was maintained with the improved nutrient management practices. These strategies offer approaches that can considerably reduce the substantial nutrient loss in drainage associated with free-draining substrate cropping in greenhouse production in southern Europe.

The aim of this study to improve the production of tomato and strawberry plants in soilless culture. This experiment was carried out to study effect of the planting distances (D30, D40), Overlapping (mixed culture) of the tomato plant only and with strawberry plant (L0, L1), and foliar application by Biozyme (B0, B1) on growth and productivity of the plants. The results revealed that planting of tomato at a distance 40 cm by using ring culture (soilless) had a significant superiority in the chlorophyll content (61.15); diameter of the tomato stem (13.47 mm); fruits number of tomato (22.78); fruit weight of tomato (206.88 g) and total plant yield of tomato (4.71 kg.plant−1). In addition, for strawberry plant had a significant superiority in the fruits number (16.25); fruit weight (25.20 g), total plant yield (408.55 g plant−1, 1634 g m−2 and 389.47 kg greenhouse-1). The planting of tomato at a distance 30 cm had a significant superiority in the plant high (210.88 cm) and total plant yield of tomato (22.86 kg m−2 and 5.69 ton greenhouse-1). Foliar application of Biozyme alone and combined treatment D30 B1 had a significant superiority in the yield of the strawberry plant (340.08 g plant−1 and 269.70 g.plant−1, respectively).

Soilless crop production is spread worldwide. It is a cultivating technique that enhances yield quality and quantity, thus contributing to both food safety and food security. However, in closed-loop soilless crops, the risk of spreading soil-borne pathogens through the recycled nutrient solution makes the establishment of a disinfection strategy necessary. In the current study, sodium hypochlorite was applied to the recycled nutrient solution as a chemical disinfectant to assess its impact on plant growth, leaf gas exchange, fruit yield, tissue mineral composition, and possible accumulation of chlorate and perchlorate residues in tomato fruits. The application of 2.5, 5, and 7.5 mg L−1 of chlorine three times at fortnightly intervals during the cropping period had no impact on plant growth or gas exchange parameters. Furthermore, the application of 2.5 mg L−1 of chlorine led to a significant increase in the total production of marketable fruits (total fruit weight per plant). No consistent differences in nutrient concentrations were recorded between the treatments. Moreover, neither chlorate nor perchlorate residues were detected in tomato fruits, even though chlorate residues were present in the nutrient solution. Therefore, the obtained tomatoes were safe for consumption. Further research is needed to test the application of chlorine in combination with crop inoculation with pathogens to test the efficiency of chlorine as a disinfectant in soilless nutrient solutions. Hydroponics is a farming technique for growing plants with mineral nutrients using a soil-free medium. The plant roots are submerged in soil-free media, such as vermiculite or perlite, or just in mineral nutrient solutions. This allows for high production yields throughout the year with less water and agro-chemical inputs. Consequently, hydroponics is considered a sustainable agriculture technology. Hydroponically grown crops are usually protected from the diseases transmitted through soil or animals in open fields. Therefore, they require fewer chemicals for pest control and are safer than conventionally grown crops in terms of possible chemical contamination. Nevertheless, hydroponics guarantees neither plant health nor the microbial safety of fresh produce. In the case of microbial contamination by human pathogens, unlike soil-grown crops, the pathogens may rapidly spread through the circulating water and simultaneously infect all the plants in the facility. This review summarizes the up-to-date knowledge regarding the microbial safety of hydroponically grown crops and discusses the role of the hydroponic system in reducing the microbial hazards for leafy and fruity crops as well as the potential risks for contamination by human pathogens. Finally, it outlines the approaches and the available science-based practices to ensure produce safety. The contamination risk in hydroponic systems may be diminished by using novel planting materials and the appropriate decontamination treatment of a recirculating liquid substrate; by modulating the microbiota interactions; and by following strict phytosanitary measures and workers' hygienic practices. There is a timely need to adopt measures, such as the Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) guidelines, to mitigate the risks and ensure safe hydroponically grown vegetables for consumers. The aim of this study to improve the production of tomato and strawberry plants in soilless culture. This experiment was carried out to study effect of the planting distances (D 30 , D 40), Overlapping (mixed culture) of the tomato plant only and with strawberry plant (L 0 , L 1), and foliar application by Biozyme (B 0 , B 1) on growth and productivity of the plants. The results revealed that planting of tomato at a distance 40 cm by using ring culture (soilless) had a significant superiority in the chlorophyll content (61.15); diameter of the tomato stem (13.47 mm); fruits number of tomato (22.78) ; fruit weight of tomato (206.88 g) and total plant yield of tomato (4.71 kg.plant−1). In addition, for strawberry plant had a significant superiority in the fruits number (16.25); fruit weight (25.20 g), total plant yield (408.55 g plant−1, 1634 g m−2 and 389.47 kg greenhouse-1). The planting of tomato at a distance 30 cm had a significant superiority in the plant high (210.88 cm) and total plant yield of tomato (22.86 kg m−2 and 5.69 ton greenhouse-1). Foliar application of Biozyme alone and combined treatment D 30 B 1 had a significant superiority in the yield of the strawberry plant (340.08 g plant−1 and 269.70 g.plant−1, respectively). Growers rely on soilless substrates to provide sufficient water and nutrients to containerized crops. Traditional bark-based substrates are engineered to have relatively low water-holding capabilities, which can lead to nonuniform rewetting patterns and inefficient usage of water resources. Engineering substrates to redistribute water dynamics and maximize aeration within the container may improve water resource efficiencies. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether more efficient irrigation schedules can be used when stratifying unique substrates within a container for added crop water and nutrient efficiency. Loropetalum chinense ‘Ruby’ liners were planted and grown in a conventional pine bark substrate or one of three stratified substrate treatments, including a bark:peat, bark:coir, or fine bark layered on top of a coarse bark. The crops were grown under four different irrigation schedules, including single daily application, single application at deficit levels, cyclic application, or cyclic at deficit schedules. Stratified substrates improved crop growth, quality, and yield when compared with plants grown in conventional bark in the single application irrigation treatment. Measured at final harvest, substrates positively influenced plant growth index (P < 0.0001), whereas irrigation scheduling alone had no effect (P = 0.6321). There was a strong interaction between substrate and irrigation schedules on Δ growth index (P = 0.0141). There were strong substrate effects on shoot dry weight (P = 0.0060), root dry weight (P = 0.0342), and growth index (P = 0.0040). The stratified bark:coir treatment outgrew all other substrate treatments. In addition, within all irrigation treatments, plants grown with the stratified bark:coir substrate had the highest survival ratings among the other substrate treatments, whereas the conventional bark had the lowest survival rates. Substrate and irrigation had an effect on nitrogen and potassium leachate concentrations levels (P = 0.0107 and P = 0.0004, respectively). Evaluation of microbial communities showed that substrate (P = 0.0010) and the stratified layer (P = 0.0010) had strong influences on the type of community present and the relative abundance in the treatments used herein this study. Specifically, within cyclic scheduling, bark:peat actinomycete populations were significantly greater than other substrate treatments. Furthermore, under deficit irrigation, stratified substrate systems were able to mitigate crop water stress. The results indicate that when crops such as the Loropetalum are grown in the stratified system, crop growth can be sustained when drought conditions are present. This is possible by providing adequate water availability even under low water inputs until subsequent irrigations during the fragile establishment period, when compared with using traditional bark-based substrates.

Plant biostimulants have been used to reduce the damage caused by different types of biotic and abiotic stresses. Iodine (I) is a non-essential element in plants. Still, it is considered beneficial and a biostimulant, since exogenous application can enhance the redox metabolism, which improves antioxidants, synergies with essential minerals and increases tolerance to adverse factors. However, little is known about the mechanism of action of iodine; so, it is advantageous to undertake research that elucidates the impact of this element on plant physiology, which is expected to encourage the productive agricultural sector to use this element with additional biofortification benefit. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of foliar KIO3 applications every 15 days at 100 μM, on growth, mineral content and antioxidants in tomato plants grown under greenhouse conditions subjected to salinity stress (100 mM NaCl). The results showed that iodine did not mitigate the adverse impact of salinity on fresh or dry biomass but increased fruit production by 23%. A greater amount of N and Fe was also found in the leaves but not in the fruits; the same happened with the iodine concentration, which was high in the leaves of the treated plants but not in tomato fruits. The content of Ca and Mg in fruits was decreased in plants treated with iodine, as well as the activity of the GPX, lycopene and the antioxidant potential. None of the fruit quality variables were affected by salinity with or without application of iodine.

Coconut coir is widely used as a substrate component for southern highbush blueberry [(SHB) Vaccinium corymbosum L. interspecific hybrids] cultivation in containers. Coconut coir-based substrates can exhibit high potassium (K), sodium (Na), and chlorine (Cl) concentrations. Sodium in the substrate is particularly problematic because it can cause salinity stress and nutritional imbalances in young blueberry plants. Thus, Na removal is important to ensure transplant success. We hypothesized that preplant fertilization with large volumes of nutrient solution can reduce substrate salinity, replace Na with nutritional cations, and enhance blueberry establishment. We tested this hypothesis in a greenhouse experiment with ‘Snowchaser’ SHB grown in rhizoboxes filled with a 7:3 mix of coconut coir and perlite. Four different treatments were delivered every 24 hours starting 72 hours before transplant. Treatments included 1.75 g⋅L–1 calcium nitrate (CN), 2.38 g⋅L–1 monoammonium phosphate (MAP), deionized water, and well water. One rooted cutting was transplanted to each rhizobox. Rhizoboxes were fertigated during the 7-week cultivation period. We found that preplant fertilization increased nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and calcium (Ca) concentrations in the substrate without replacing Na. Thus, preplant fertilization increased substrate salinity. Preplant fertilization also promoted microbial respiration in the substrate at the start of the experiment. Treatments did not affect SHB root architecture, leaf area index, leaf greenness, or biomass accumulation, likely because nutrients delivered by the fertigation solution provided the plants with homogeneous optimal conditions. These findings suggest that preplant fertilization with large volumes of nutrient solution does not enhance blueberry establishment in coconut coir-based substrates.

Biochar, derived from the pyrolysis of plant materials has the potential to enhance plant growth in soilless media. Howevetar, little is known about the impact of biochar amendments to soilless growth media, microbial community composition, and fate of chemical constituents in the media. In this study, different concentrations of biochar were added to soilless media and microbial composition, and chemical constituents were analyzed using metagenomics and gamma spectroscopy techniques, respectively. Across treatments, carboxyl-C, phenolic-C, and aromatic-C were the main carbon sources that influenced microbial community composition. Flavobacterium (39.7%), was the predominantly bacteria genus, followed by Acidibacter (12.2%), Terrimonas (10.1%), Cytophaga (7.5%), Ferruginibacter (6.0%), Lacunisphaera (5.9%), Cellvibrio (5.8%), Opitutus (4.8%), Mucilaginibacter (4.0%) and Bryobacter (4.0%). Negative relationships were found between Cytophaga and 226Ra (r = −0.84, p = 0.0047), 40K (r = −0.82, p = 0.0069) and 137Cs (r = −0.93, p = 0.0002). Similarly, Mucilaginibacter was negatively correlated with 226Ra (r = −0.83, p = 0.0054) and 137Cs (r = −0.87, p = 0.0021). Overall, the data suggest that high % biochar amended samples have high radioactivity concentration levels. Some microorganisms have less presence in high radioactivity concentration levels. The study was carried out in the research greenhouse, within the Horticultural Products Quality Research Center in 2021. On the mattresses filled with perlite, 2 varieties of lettuce were grown, oak leaf type, Kineta type, and Lollo Bionda type, variety Lugano. The nutrient solution was administered in 3 EC concentrations, respectively 1.5 mS, 2.5 mS and 3.5 mS. Three pH levels were used for each EC type. Differences were found between the experimental variants regarding the reaction of the varieties to these treatments. The study was conducted under controlled conditions in a greenhouse during a crop cycle during September-April. The culture was established on a coconut substrate. All parameters of vegetation, temperature, light, humidity, carbon dioxide content in the greenhouse were monitored. Fruit mass determinations were performed on each inflorescence, as well as carbohydrate and nitrate content. The production obtained by fruiting stages was determined as well as the total production. The study was carried out in the greenhouses of the Research Center for the Study of the Quality of Horticultural Products, within the USAMV of Bucharest, Romania, on a tomato crop, the cultivar Cheramy F1, carried out in an unconventional system on a coconut substrate. The effect of temperature variation on the growth, development and yield of the tomato crop (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) was studied. The observations made on tomato plants led to the conclusion that temperatures above the optimal parameters, especially in the period from May to July, determined the formation of leaves with a smaller leaf surface but also a decrease in fruiting, therefore lower production which led when clearing the crop because it was ineffective. Tomato is the main vegetable cultivated under soilless culture systems (SCSs); production of organic tomato under SCSs has increased due to consumer demands for healthier and environmentally friendly vegetables. However, organic tomato production under SCSs has been associated with low crop performance and fruit quality defects. These agricultural deficiencies could be linked to alterations in tomato plant microbiota; nonetheless, this issue has not been sufficiently addressed. Thus, the main goal of the present study was to characterize the rhizosphere and phyllosphere of tomato plants cultivated under conventional and organic SCSs. To accomplish this goal, tomato plants grown in commercial greenhouses under conventional or organic SCSs were tested at 8, 26, and 44 weeks after seedling transplantation. Substrate (n = 24), root (n = 24), and fruit (n = 24) composite samples were subjected to DNA extraction and high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The present study revealed that the tomato core microbiota was predominantly constituted by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. Remarkably, six bacterial families, Bacillaceae, Microbacteriaceae, Nocardioidaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Sphingomonadaceae, were shared among all substrate, rhizosphere, and fruit samples. Importantly, it was shown that plants under organic SCSs undergo a dysbiosis characterized by significant changes in the relative abundance of Bradyrhizobiaceae, Caulobacteraceae, Chitinophagaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Erythrobacteraceae, Flavobacteriaceae, Nocardioidaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Streptomycetaceae. These results suggest that microbial alterations in substrates, roots, and fruits could be potential factors in contributing to the crop performance and fruit quality deficiencies observed in organic SCSs.

Leachate reuse is a helpful tool that contributes to the sustainability of agricultural systems, but it requires previous disinfection. Hydrogen peroxide can be found among the disinfectants frequently applied in ecological production systems. Moreover, it can improve the oxygenation of the root system. The objective of this work was to study its effect on C. fruticosa plants fertigated with leachates. A split-plot design with six treatments, three without an H2O2 supply (S0) and three with an H2O2 supply dosage at 2% (SH2O2), was arranged: raw leachate from C. lanatus (L100), raw leachate from C. lanatus diluted with tap water until EC of 2.5 dS m−1 (LWD), and raw leachate from C. lanatus diluted with standard nutrient solution until EC of 2.5 dS m−1 (LNSD). The results produced data about the evolution of the nutrient and leachate solutions throughout the cultivation period. Morphological (height, leaf number, leaf area, total fresh weight, relative water status, and dry weight) and physiological (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids, chlorophyll a+b, and proline) parameters were studied to reveal the plant response. The efficiency of nutrient utilization was higher with the LWD treatment, and water and nitrogen utilization efficiency decreased under the H2O2 supply. In conclusion, the reuse of diluted leachate is advised for nutritionally undemanding crops, such as C. fruticosa; moreover, the H2O2 supply improved tolerance to salinity and enhanced root growth and Red-Green-Blue (RGB) values.

The objective of this study was to determine the efficiency of balloon flower sprout's saponin production in a plant factory with artificial lighting (PFAL). Balloon flower has been traditionally used as herbal medicine and now, it is used as a medicinal plant as well as a functional food. It is important to establish the cultivation conditions for the stable production of high-quality balloon flower. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of culture systems and temperature conditions on the growth and saponin accumulation of balloon flower sprouts in controlled environment systems. One-year balloon flower roots were cultivated in soil and soilless culture systems at different temperature conditions (20, 25, and 30 °C) for 17 days. The results showed that the shoot fresh weight and shoot dry weight of the balloon flower sprouts grown in the soilless culture system at 25 °C were significantly increased by about 1.29 and 1.58 times, respectively, as compared with those of the sprouts grown in a soil culture system. Sprouts grown in the soilless culture system at 25 °C also recorded the highest root fresh weight, whereas there was no significant difference in root dry weight among the treatments. The plant height results showed an increased trend similar to that of the shoot fresh weight and shoot dry weight of the balloon flower sprouts. The concentrations of platycodin D3 (Pd-D3), polygalcin D (Pc-D), and total saponin in the shoot parts were highest in the soilless culture system at 20 and 25 °C. The root parts of sprouts grown in the soilless culture system at 30 °C also had higher deapioplatycodin D (Dpd-D) and total saponin concentrations. Overall, these results suggest that a soilless culture system with temperature conditions at 20 and 25 °C is suitable for improving the growth and saponin concentration of balloon flower cultivated in PFALs. Ultimately, our research should be a valuable resource for future research on the production of medicinal plants such as sprouts and should provide basic information to establish methods for enhancing the growth and bioactive compounds in balloon flower. Floriculture crop production heavily relies on the use of peat-based substrates to quickly mass produce containerized crops. The sustainability of using peat moss has been an increasing concern for both horticultural stakeholders and the community. The concept of stratifying soilless substrates (i.e., vertically layering unique substrates atop of each other within the container) has been shown to reduce peat moss applications by upwards of 50 %. Although, most stratified substrate research has only studied an equal partition in which the substrate is evenly split into two layers. This necessitates further studying modification of the limits and optima for the depth of each layer. This study evaluated adjusting this stratified depth layer for possible further benefits, such as reduced water and peat moss applications. Lucky Star Dark Red Pentas lanceolata 'PAS1231189' was grown in one of four substrate treatments, including a (1) non-stratified 100 % peat and perlite blend (peat-lite), (2) 13.4 cm peat-lite placed above 4.4 cm pine bark (PB) horizon with the container consisting of 75 % (by vol.) peat-lite and 25 % (by vol.) PB; (3) 8.9 cm peat-lite placed above 8.9 cm PB layer with the container consisting of 50 % (by vol.) peatlite and 50 % (by vol.) PB; (4) 4.5 cm peat-lite placed above 13.3 cm PB with the container consisting of 25 % (by vol.) peat-lite and 75 % (by vol.) pine bark. Crops were placed on irrigation-actuated lysimetry systems to maintain substrate volumetric water contents between 0.20 and 0.30 cm3 cm−3. This study identified successful production of pentas in stratified profiles when the depth layer is ≥ 50 % peatlite by vol., with equal growth to pentas grown traditionally (i.e., 100 % peat-lite; non-stratified). Crops grown in a 25 % peat-lite : 75 % PB depth layer experienced significantly reduced growth with regards to growth index, quality, and dry biomass. Moreover, crops grown in the 25 % peat-lite by vol. also experienced faster peak inflorescence with a subsequent continuous decline in flower development due to water stress; whereas, plants grown in ≥ 50 % peatlite by vol. continued to develop blooms throughout the study. This study demonstrates that a popular floriculture crop can be grown by stratifying expensive floriculture media above inexpensive PB with little to no differences in growth if the stratified peat layer is equal or greater than 50 % the container vol. However, in closed-loop soilless crops, the risk of spreading soil-borne pathogens through the recycled nutrient solution makes the establishment of a disinfection strategy necessary. In the current study, sodium hypochlorite was applied to the recycled nutrient solution as a chemical disinfectant to assess its impact on plant growth, leaf gas exchange, fruit yield, tissue mineral composition, and possible accumulation of chlorate and perchlorate residues in tomato fruits. This preliminary mixed methods study utilized an online survey and phone interviews to examine the benefits, challenges and user experience of farmers utilizing hydroponic shipping container farms (HSCFs). Due to the novelty of this crop production method, and thus the relatively small number of commercial farmers adopting this technology, 12 commercial HSCF businesses, of 46 identified online and via social media, participated in this study. Because population size was small, and 11 of the 12 farms had been in business a very short amount of time (two years or less), the following results are preliminary. The results showed that HSCFs gave farmers the ability to produce locally, sustainably and in new areas. Seventy-five percent of the farmers (n = 9) strongly agreed or agreed that the HSCF helped their farm become more productive, did everything they expected it to do and was efficient. Most participants were satistifed (n = 8; 66.7%) with their HSCFs; one was very satisfied (8.3%), while others were neutral (n = 1; 8.3%) and dissatisfied (n = 2; 16.7%). Participant expectations were most met regarding incorporation of technology, reduced resource use and efficiency; however, 50.0% of the farmers (n = 6) disagreed or strongly disagreed that the HSCF was profitable. Some farmers reported that HSCFs are efficient in production, although their units were not as productive and profitable, nor as user friendly as they expected. Regarding HSCF challenges, power usage and startup costs were ranked most highly, while finding labor was the least challenging. Following phone interviews with three profitable farmers, it was revealed that their success was due to growing local food that was in demand by their community. While this study identified several challenges of HSCFs, this technology may have benefits, for example in areas with limited arable land and water resources, and may offer some farmers a way to be profitable, especially by tapping the growing consumer demand for local produce. Research was conducted on Adenium obesum, a popular flowering pot plant with the basic objective for genetic improvement at Advance Technology Centre of soilless system, Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, NAU, Navsari. Initially, hybridization was done involving ten parents (seven females and three males) in 2014 and their crosses were studied during 2015 to 2016. Among the crosses studied, a germplasm viz., MSDSH1 (Mung Siam x Double Sweet Heart) showed novel morphological character for colour and flower form having attractive purplish coloured ten petals. Further evaluation was carried out for stability and other flowering characters along with its parents viz., Mung Siam and Double Sweet Heart (DSH) and the local germplasm, Local Pink for two years 2016-17 and 2017-18. The MSDSH1 was significantly superior in terms of the number of flowers per cluster (10.23) and flower longevity on plant (11.91 days) as compared to parent and Local Pink as inferred from the pooled data of two years. Flower diameter was significantly superior in DSH at par with MSDSH1 (7.06 cm) while that of Mung Siam was minimum (5.89 cm), although the diameter of corolla was maximum (1.62 cm) in Local Pink while the length of corolla tube (4.01 cm) was maximum in Double Sweet Heart. Further, the maximum flower weight was observed in Double Sweet Heart (1.72 g) which was at par with MSDSH1 (1.61 g). Number of petals was ten in MSDSH1 and Double Sweet Heart as compared to Mung Siam and Local Pink with five petals. Since the genotype MSDSH1 was novel in flower colour with reddish purple shade and morphology with ten multipetalous flower form, besides being superior for the other flowering parameters, especially the number of flowers per cluster and flower longevity on plant, it was renamed as G. Ad.2 and released in SVRC, Gujarat.

The study was carried out in the doctoral thesis entitled, Research on the production of seedlings and flowers cut by gerbera in various variants of hydroponic cultivation, and refers to the identification of the best way to obtain as many flowers per plant as well as recommendation of the best type of substrate for obtaining cut flowers. In the study we used three varieties of gerbera, 'Dune', 'Balance' and 'Blind Date". The substrate variants used in the experiments were: V1 - peat with a pH of 4; V2 - Perlite; V3 - 50% Perlite + 50% peat with pH-4; V4 - 50% Perlite + 50% peat with pH 5.5; and V5 - Peat with pH 5.5 (Control Variant). We followed the response of plants grown in different types of substrate on the growth, development and yield of gerbera flowers in the unconventional system. The objective of this study was to determine the efficiency of balloon flower sprout’s saponin production in a plant factory with artificial lighting (PFAL). Balloon flower has been traditionally used as herbal medicine and now, it is used as a medicinal plant as well as a functional food. It is important to establish the cultivation conditions for the stable production of high-quality balloon flower. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of culture systems and temperature conditions on the growth and saponin accumulation of balloon flower sprouts in controlled environment systems. One-year balloon flower roots were cultivated in soil and soilless culture systems at different temperature conditions (20, 25, and 30 °C) for 17 days. The results showed that the shoot fresh weight and shoot dry weight of the balloon flower sprouts grown in the soilless culture system at 25 °C were significantly increased by about 1.29 and 1.58 times, respectively, as compared with those of the sprouts grown in a soil culture system. Sprouts grown in the soilless culture system at 25 °C also recorded the highest root fresh weight, whereas there was no significant difference in root dry weight among the treatments. The plant height results showed an increased trend similar to that of the shoot fresh weight and shoot dry weight of the balloon flower sprouts. The concentrations of platycodin D3 (Pd-D3), polygalcin D (Pc-D), and total saponin in the shoot parts were highest in the soilless culture system at 20 and 25 °C. The root parts of sprouts grown in the soilless culture system at 30 °C also had higher deapioplatycodin D (Dpd-D) and total saponin concentrations. Overall, these results suggest that a soilless culture system with temperature conditions at 20 and 25 °C is suitable for improving the growth and saponin concentration of balloon flower cultivated in PFALs. Ultimately, our research should be a valuable resource for future research on the production of medicinal plants such as sprouts and should provide basic information to establish methods for enhancing the growth and bioactive compounds in balloon flower.

The present study on the evolution of high-performance technologies as well as the evolution of areas with greenhouses and solariums in Romania aimed, in particular, to identify farmers who have adopted high-performance technologies in order to increase tomato production. We identified the high-performance greenhouses in Romania, especially those that grow tomatoes in them. They also identified the areas occupied by greenhouses and high tunnels, cultivated in a soilless system, on substrates or on the ground in some areas of Romania. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present study, an attempt has been made to apply Internet of Things (IoT) for precise irrigation management. A weighing type micro-lysimeter based on IoT was developed to measure the amount of water consumed by the cucumber crop grown in soilless media under naturally ventilated greenhouse conditions at the Research Farm of Punjab Agricultural University, India. The developed system consisted of two components, i.e. hardware assembly and web-based application. The hardware assembly consists of load cells, a weight sensing module, i.e. HX711 module and a micro controller, i.e. arduino assembled in the control box of the weighing balance. A modular code was written in arduino to record the weight readings. The stored data in the microcontroller was sent to a web based application via wifi. The weight changes at the lysimeters due to irrigation, drainage and evapotranspiration were monitored in real time through an IoT platform, i.e. Thingspeak. Three lysimeters were placed at different locations to account for the slight variations in micro-climate within the greenhouse. The positive flux i.e. irrigation and negative flux, i.e. (leachate+ actual evapotranspiration (ETc)) from the lysimeter were derived from the IoT platform. Irrigation and leachate from the lysimeter was also measured manually to verify the accuracy of the readings obtained from the IoT platform. The study showed that IoT based lysimeters presents a reliable and convenient way to measure ETc as there was a good agreement (R2> 0.98) between irrigation component derived from IoT and actual irrigation applied.

Egypt has limited agricultural land, associated with the scarcity of irrigation water and rapid population growth. Hydroponic farming, seawater desalination and magnetic treatment are among the practical solutions for sustaining rapid population growth. In this regard, the main objective of the present research study was to design and construct a hierarchical engineering unit as a hydroponic farming system (soilless) to produce an iceberg lettuce crop using magnetically treated saline water. The treatments included four types of irrigation water: common irrigation water (IW1) with an electrical conductivity (EC) of 0.96 dS/m as a control treatment, magnetically treated common irrigation water (IW2) with an EC of 0.96 dS/m, saline water (IW3) with an EC of 4.56 dS/m and magnetically treated saline water (IW4) with an EC of 4.56 dS/m; three depletion ratios (DR) of field capacity (DR0 = 50%, DR1 = 60% and DR2 = 70%) and three slopes of hydroponic pipes (S1 = 0.0%, S2 = 0.025% and S3 = 0.075%). The results revealed that seawater contributed 7.15% to produce iceberg lettuce in the hydroponic system. The geometric parameter, the slope of the pipes, influenced the obtained luminous intensity by an average increase of 21% and 71% for S2 and S3, respectively, compared with the zero slope (horizontal pipes). Magnetization of irrigation water increased the total soluble solids (TSS) and enhanced the fresh weight and water productivity of both iceberg lettuce varieties used. The maximum percentages of TSS were 5.20% and 5.10% for lemur and iceberg 077, respectively, for the combination IW4DR2S2. The highest values of fresh weight and water productivity of 3.10 kg/m and 39.15 kg/m3 were recorded with the combinations IW3DR2S3 and IW4DR1S3, respectively, for lemur and iceberg lettuce. The percentages of these increases were 109.46% and 97.78%, respectively, when compared with the combination IW1DR0S1. The highest values of iceberg lettuce 077 fresh weight and water productivity were 2.93 kg/m and 36.15 kg/m3, respectively, which were recorded with the combination IW4DR1S3. The percentages of these increases were 112.32% and 120.56%, respectively, when compared with IW1DR0S1 (the control treatment).

Soilless growing systems can improve water-use efficiency, especially in closed soilless growing systems. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different transplanting conditions, and determine how supplying H2O2 as an oxygen source to the rhizosphere of strawberry plants in a soilless growing system affects plant growth, fruit yield and fruit quality. Strawberry plants (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) cv. ‘Fortuna’ were cultivated in 12 L pots filled with peat substrate, and maintained under conditions of natural light and temperature. Treated plants were supplied with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (H1) and control plants did not receive H2O2 (H0). In terms of the transplanting conditions, the plants were transplanted in October (T1), and either maintained in a culture chamber (T2), or refrigerated (T3), for one month, before being transplanted. A completely randomized block design with two treatment factors (transplanting conditions, and H2O2 treatment) and five replications was established. Then, we determined the fruit per plant, yield per plant (g plant−1), fruit weight (g fruit−1), fruit size (mm), SPAD values, crown number, crown diameter (mm), flower number, firmness (g cm−1), pH, total soluble solid (TSS), titratable acidity (TA) and TSS/TA. During the early crop cycle, there were not significant differences between treatment and the transplanting conditions that significantly affected the fruit weight and fruit size, although T3 produced the highest values. During the late crop cycle, the H2O2 treatment affected fruit per plant, yield per plant (g plant−1), and crown diameter, with H1 producing the highest values. Furthermore, the transplanting conditions affected yield per plant (g plant−1), old SPAD values, crown diameter, firmness, TSS, TA and TSS/TA.
