Cet article montre les apports de la sociologie de la transaction sociale dans une recherche participative pour l'aménagement du territoire en Tunisie. Dans le cadre d'un programme de développement rural, trois scènes transactionnelles sont analysées : la politique, la recherche et le terrain. La sociologie de la transaction sociale permet : 1/ de prendre en compte les différentes échelles transactionnelles dans la compréhension des échanges et des débouchés de la démarche participative ; 2/ d'éclairer les oppositions entre acteurs. L'article propose trois manières pour les chercheurs et facilitateurs d'accompagner les acteurs locaux dans les transitions économiques, sociales et environnementales : en prenant en compte 1/ les émotions, 2/ le rôle de l'espace et du temps dans les démarches participatives et 3/ en favorisant l'élargissement de l'espace des transactions sociales, en estompant la rigidité des institutions et des dispositifs.

International audience; As decisions on climate change adaptation involve stakeholders with different values, beliefs and attitudes (VBA), decision outcomes depend on how stakeholders interact and how power is distributed. In this paper, we explore the VBA of stakeholders involved in three water management projects focusing on dams, micro-reservoirs, or wetlands in a Peruvian watershed facing droughts. We apply a framework with the core ideas of the hydrosocial cycle, the decision context perspective, and the VBA hierarchy to show how stakeholders’ perspectives and power influence practices on the ground. The analysis of VBA reveals three different perspectives on water management held by different stakeholder groups. First, a community-based perspective, frequent among local communities, favors micro-reservoirs managed by communities. Second, an infrastructure-based perspective, frequent among public sector stakeholders, shows a preference for dams managed by the private sector. Third, a nature-based perspective, with a preference for wetlands managed by the public sector, is found across stakeholder groups. In the three water management projects, different power distributions determine which VBA dominate and influence practices on the ground. Dams on the ground represent power from the public and private sectors, while micro-reservoirs represent local grassroot control. In the wetland project, the outcomes of the evolving hydrosocial cycle are still unclear and will depend on how multiple perspectives are considered. Examining and questioning the decision context in which adaptation occurs can help excluded stakeholders achieve more power and agency and tackle the fundamental question of ‘adaptation of what and for whom’.

espanolEste articulo examina el grado de autonomia economica y politica de los campesinos en los dominios monasticos de la Lotaringia del siglo x. Aunque es indudable que las sociedades locales estaban profundamente imbricadas en redes de control aristocratico, tambien es posible identificar espacios de autonomia. El senorio monastico no lo abarcaba todo, ya que se encontraba estructuralmente limitado en cuanto a su capacidad para controlar todos los aspectos de la vida de los campesinos y para prevenir todas las formas de desobediencia. A pesar de la naturaleza violenta y a veces arbitraria del poder aristocratico, las negociaciones entre campesinos y senores jugaron un papel importante, especialmente cuando las familias campesinas desarrollaron una forma de economia de subsistencia que conllevaba una produccion para el intercambio comercial. En este contexto, algunos monasterios estaban dispuestos a otorgar mas medios productivos y autonomia a los campesinos. A veces, estas iniciativas estaban apoyadas por un «vocabulario de senorio» paternalista y una «economia moral» plasmada en un patronazgo sobre los campesinos, pero que tambien podia movilizarse para apoyar sus intereses. EnglishThis paper examines the degree of economic and political autonomy of peasants in monastic estates in 10th century Lotharingia. While it is beyond doubt that local societies were deeply enmeshed in networks of aristocratic control, it is also possible to identify areas of autonomy. Monastic lordship was not all encompassing as it was structurally limited in its capacity to control every aspect of peasants’ lives and to prevent all forms of disobedience. Despite the violent and sometimes arbitrary nature of aristocratic power, negotiations between peasants and lords played an important role, especially as peasant households developed a form of subsistence economy that involved production for commercial exchange. In this context, some monasteries were willing to grant more productive means and autonomy to peasants. These initiatives were sometimes supported by a paternalistic «vocabulary of lordship» and a «moral economy» that patronized peasants, but could also be mobilized to support their interests.

Groundwater service markets are important and dynamic institutions that provide water to a wide range of farmers in many regions. However, these institutions represent arenas of complex and often antagonistic relations, which determine which farmers gain access to water and how. This study analyses the emergence and functioning of groundwater service markets from a historical perspective to advance the understanding of the role of social power games in shaping these institutions. The study was conducted in the Sidi Okba oasis in the Algerian Sahara, where over recent decades, four (in)formal, often overlapping, groundwater service markets have emerged. These markets were shaped progressively by socio-ethnic antagonism, state intervention and economic competition between water sellers. By continuously adjusting these institutions, the highly diverse irrigation community prevented the emergence of a monopoly in groundwater sales and maintained the balance of power between water sellers and buyers by countering possible control of groundwater access by a single socio-ethnic or economic group. The demonstrated ability of the irrigation community to craft rules to ensure these groundwater service markets function should encourage public actors to mobilize this capacity to deal with the drop in water tables, which is one adverse outcome of the ‘success’ of these markets. The article discusses the permanence of clientelistic practices and their tensions with the participatory approach adopted within the framework of the Brazilian public policy of rural territorial development. It examines, in particular, the case of local implementation of the National Program of Territorial Development. The results come from the study of the functioning of the Territorial Collegiate and the projects implemented in the Águas Emendadas Territory in the Midwest of Brazil. It uses a socio-anthropological approach of patronage and political participation through the analysis of the social configuration and the relations of instrumentalisation in both the participatory spaces and the projects of this territory. The results show the existence of a not only social but also an affective dimension of clientele practice that can be analyzed as an asymmetrical reciprocity relationship based on the principle of anthropological reciprocity or as a process of unequal political exchange, considering a political science approach.

RESUMO O artigo aborda a participação de sociólogos rurais norte-americanos em missões técnicas na América Latina, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, como parte dos programas de cooperação interamericana dos EUA. Argumenta que o contexto político e intelectual da Era Roosevelt, assim como a matriz comunitarista de pensamento da sociologia rural, contribuíram para que esses cientistas sociais lançassem um olhar particular sobre os vizinhos ao Sul do Rio Grande. Esses povos foram concebidos não apenas como economicamente atrasados, mas também como lócus de experimentos societais originais que poderiam, no curso de seu desenvolvimento, contornar aqueles que eram considerados os efeitos deletérios da modernização capitalista nos EUA, como o individualismo dissolvente dos laços comunitários. Focalizando o caso de T. Lynn Smith, que atuou como analista agrícola no Brasil e na Colômbia, indica como tal diagnóstico sobre os potenciais de desenvolvimento da América Latina envolveu igualmente diálogos com tradições locais de pensamento. ABSTRACT In this article, we discuss the participation of US rural sociologists in technical missions in Latin America during World War II as part of the Inter-American cooperation programs under the Office of Foreign Agricultural Relations. We argue that the political and intellectual context of the Roosevelt Era as well as the communitarian thought style that informed these social scientists shaped a vision of their neighbors to the South not only as economically backward but as the locus of original societal experiments that could, in the course of its development, circumvent those that were considered the deleterious effects of modernization in the US, such as the dissolving individualism and the weakening of community ties. Focusing on the case of T. Lynn Smith, who served as an agricultural analyst in Brazil and Colombia, we indicate how such a sociological diagnosis of Latin America’s development potentials also involved dialogues with local thinking traditions. RÉSUMÉ Dans cet article, nous discutons de la participation de sociologues ruraux américains à des missions’ techniques en Amérique Latine pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale dans le cadre des programmes de coopération interaméricaine de l’Office of International Agricultural Relations du Ministère Américain de l’Agriculture. Nous soutenons que le contexte politique et intellectuel de l’ère Roosevelt ainsi que la matrice de pensée communautaire en Sociologie Rurale ont contribué à ce que ces sociologues voient les voisins méridionaux du continent non seulement comme économiquement arriérés, mais comme le locus d’expériences sociétales originales qui pourraient, au cours de son développement, contourner ceux qui étaient considérés comme les effets délétères de la modernisation capitaliste aux États-Unis, comme l’individualisme qui dissout les liens communautaires. En nous concentrant sur le cas de T. Lynn Smith, qui a travaillé comme analyste agricole au Brésil et en Colombie, nous indiquons comment un tel diagnostic sociologique des potentiels de développement de l’Amérique Latine a impliqué également des dialogues avec les traditions de pensée locales. The way rural sociology has developed in Romania cannot be reduced to a simple confrontation between those advocating research aligned with international standards and those defending a grass-roots science, attuned to local realities. The positions and stances of the protagonists have gradually shaped a scientific field. Some of those who had participated in international academic forums under the Communist regime used this to further their position in the new context; others had to handle the new capitalism of the post-Soviet era, and likewise laid claim to international academic recognition. In both cases, combinations with complementary social profiles created tension between the sociologists who wished to integrate studies on rural populations into broader analyses, and those who believed in the production of specialised knowledge. So this particular organisation of the field has a long history. The antagonisms it sustains and the comparisons it authorises lend themselves to structural comparison.; Les évolutions de la sociologie rurale en Roumanie ne permettent pas d’observer un simple face-à-face entre les promoteurs d’une recherche alignée sur des standards internationaux et les défenseurs d’une une science autochtone, ajustée aux réalités locales. La thèse porte sur les organisations de coopération agricole au stade de la production (OCAP) en Belgique. Elle s’inscrit dans le champ de l’économie institutionnelle, de l’économie sociale et de l’économie politique agraire. À partir d’une enquête empirique, la recherche s’efforce d’étayer la thèse de la complexité du fonctionnement interne des OCAP en Belgique étant donné la multiplicité des objectifs poursuivis par leurs membres et la nature des relations sociales dans lesquelles sont insérées ces structures coopératives de production agricole. En tant qu’objet d’étude, les OCAP sont définies comme les formes volontaires de coopération qui portent sur les processus biologiques de la culture des plantes et de l'élevage des animaux. Ces arrangements institutionnels sont caractérisés par la construction d'un ensemble de règles collectives qui organisent la mise en commun de ressources et d’activités et par la négociation entre associés des critères de répartition des résultats monétaires et non monétaires issus du travail. Les OCAP se distinguent des coopératives agricoles largement développées depuis le 19e siècle en Europe de l’Ouest pour offrir des services en amont ou en aval de la production. Ces coopératives de services ont été constituées pour faciliter l’intégration verticale sur les marchés d’exploitations indépendantes tandis que les OCAP, en intervenant au stade de la production, organisent la coopération horizontale entre agriculteurs associés.Les OCAP sont relativement peu développées en Europe et ailleurs dans le monde. Pourtant, les arguments pour coopérer au stade de la production agricole sont multiples et articulent des motivations d’ordre économique, social, politique, écologique et idéologique. Elles relèvent notamment de la volonté d’accéder aux ressources productives, de bénéficier d’économies d’échelle, d’améliorer les conditions de travail ou de renforcer les interdépendances des exploitations avec leur environnement biophysique et socioéconomique. Plusieurs raisons peuvent toutefois expliquer le fait que les OCAP sont peu répandues, comme l’attachement des agriculteurs à leur terre ou l’apparition de déséconomies d’échelle à partir d’un seuil de dimension relativement bas, liées aux coûts de déplacement des travailleurs et du matériel et aux coûts de coordination du travail. Malgré ces difficultés, depuis les années 2000 en Belgique, de nouvelles initiatives coopératives au stade de la production agricole sont portées par des néo-agriculteurs et coexistent avec les autres types d’exploitations agricoles. Notre recherche interroge en particulier la diversité des pratiques organisationnelles déployées au sein des OCAP à travers l’analyse des conditions sociales de production, des mécanismes qui permettent d’articuler la multiplicité des objectifs poursuivis et des processus de démocratisation de l’économie rurale. Pour cela, nous avons mené trois enquêtes empiriques complémentaires à partir d’une combinaison de méthodes de recherche qualitative. La première permet de caractériser la diversité organisationnelle des OCAP par la construction d’une typologie empirique menée sur la base d’un échantillon de 31 organisations. Trois variables dichotomiques définissent les types d’OCAP :la mise en commun du travail de la terre, le contrôle de la production et l’étendue de la coopération. L’analyse des conditions sociales de production dans chacun des types procède ensuite à l’examen des formes d’accès au foncier et au capital d’exploitation, des modes de prise de décision, des conditions de travail et des modalités de répartition des résultats produits. Cette première étude met finalement en évidence les tensions qui caractérisent la nature des relations que les agriculteurs nouent entre eux et avec d’autres catégories d’acteurs. La deuxième enquête empirique investigue les mécanismes par lesquels les membres des structures intégrales de coopération agricole, dont la particularité est d’organiser en commun le travail de la terre selon des principes agroécologiques, parviennent à construire une cohérence interne à leur organisation étant donné la multiplicité des objectifs qu’ils poursuivent. À travers une analyse comparative de dix organisations, les structures coopératives de production agroécologique sont alors étudiées à travers le prisme des organisations hybrides car, au-delà de la logique commerciale, elles combinent des demandes contradictoires issues de leur engagement dans des logiques d’autogestion, d’agroécologie et d’ancrage territorial. Après avoir défini les propriétés de ces logiques institutionnelles, l’analyse met en évidence les tensions paradoxales qui découlent de leur combinaison et les réponses organisationnelles mises en œuvre pour poursuivre dans la durée les multiples rationalités engagées. La troisième analyse consiste en une monographie d’une OCAP dont la singularité est de répartir le contrôle de la production agroécologique entre agriculteurs et citoyens. L’analyse vise à préciser la notion de démocratie économique à partir des principes qu’elle sous-tend et des principales praxis démocratiques mises en œuvre par les acteurs pour réguler leurs activités économiques. En particulier, nous avons cherché à comprendre les contradictions des pratiques organisationnelles avec les principes de démocratie économique et avec certains fondements du mouvement coopératif, ainsi que les tensions internes qui en résultent. Ce travail nous permet finalement d’appréhender dans une perspective critique et nuancée la transformation du rôle des citoyens dans les activités économiques et la diversification contemporaine des formes coopératives dans le secteur agricole et alimentaire induites par l’émergence d’initiatives aux multiples parties prenantes., This thesis focuses on agricultural production cooperatives (APCs) in Belgium. It is framed within the fields of institutional economics, social economics, and agrarian political economy. Based on qualitative empirical research, this work seeks to untangle the thesis of the complexity of the internal functioning of APCs in Belgium, given the multiplicity of objectives pursued by their members, and the nature of the social relations in which these agricultural production cooperatives are embedded. APCs are defined here as voluntary forms of cooperation that deal with the biological processes of cropping plants and rearing animals. These voluntary arrangements are premised upon the construction of a set of collective rules that organize the pooling of resources and activities, as well as the negotiation between associates of the criteria for redistribution of monetary and non-monetary working outcomes. APCs are different from the agricultural cooperatives that, since the 19th century, have developed widely in Western Europe to offer upstream or downstream production services. The latter were established to facilitate the vertical integration of independent farms into markets. Instead, APCs, by intervening at the production stage, organize horizontal cooperation between associated farmers.APCs are relatively undeveloped in Europe and elsewhere in the world. However, incentives for cooperating at the agricultural production stage are multiple, and articulate economic, social, political, ecological, and ideological motivations. Such motivations relate to the desire to access productive resources, to benefit from economies of scale, to improve working conditions, or to strengthen the interdependence of farms with their biophysical and socioeconomic environment. Notwithstanding this, various elements may explain the limited presence of APCs such as farmers' attachment to the land or the appearance of diseconomies of scale from low dimension thresholds, linked to the costs of moving workers and equipment and the costs of coordinating work. Despite these difficulties, in Belgium, from the 2000s, new initiatives of agricultural production cooperation have been created by neo-farmers, and coexist with other social types of farms.Our research specifically examines the diversity of organizational practices implemented within APCs through the analysis of the social conditions of production, the mechanisms that allow the combination of the multiple objectives pursued and the processes of democratization of the rural economy. To do this, we conducted three complementary empirical analyses using a combination of qualitative research methods. The first analysis allows us to characterize the organizational diversity of APCs by constructing an empirical typology based on a sample of 31 organizations. Three dichotomous variables define the types of APCs: the pooling of labour on the land, the control of production, and the extent of cooperation. From the analysis of the social conditions of production in each type of APCs, it then proceeds to examine the forms of access to land and capital, the modes of decision-making, the working conditions, and the modalities of outcomes distribution.The second empirical study investigates the mechanisms by which members of the integral structures of agricultural cooperation, whose peculiarity is to organize farming labour collectively according to agroecological principles, manage to build an internal coherence within their organization given the multiple objectives they pursue. Through a comparative analysis of ten organizations, agroecological production cooperatives are studied through the prism of hybrid organizations, as they combine contradictory demands stemming from their commitment to logics of self-management, agroecology, and territorial embeddedness. After defining the properties of these institutional logics, the analysis reveals the paradoxical tensions that arise from the combination and the organisational responses adopted to pursue this multiplicity of rationalities on the long run. The third empirical analysis consists of a single case study on one type of APC, whose singularity is to allocate the control of production between farmers and citizens. Through an in-depth study of a citizen agroecological production cooperative, the analysis aims to clarify the notion of economic democracy by looking at its underpinning principles, and at the main democratic praxis that actors implement to regulate their economic activities. In particular, we unveil the internal contradictions that emerge from the organizational practices with the principles of economic democracy and certain foundations of the cooperative movement. Ecosystem services enhance well-being and the livelihoods of disadvantaged communities. Civic ecology can enhance social&ndash, ecological systems, however, their contributions to ecosystem services are rarely measured. We analysed the outcomes of civic ecology interventions undertaken in Durban, South Africa, as part of the Wise Wayz Water Care programme (the case study). Using mixed methods (household and beneficiary (community members implementing interventions) surveys, interviews, field observations, and workshops), we identified ecosystem service use and values, as well as the benefits of six interventions (solid waste management and removal from aquatic and terrestrial areas, recycling, invasive alien plant control, river water quality monitoring, vegetable production, and community engagement). Ecosystem services were widely used for agriculture, subsistence, and cultural uses. River water was used for crop irrigation, livestock, and recreation. Respondents noted numerous improvements to natural habitats: decrease in invasive alien plants, less pollution, improved condition of wetlands, and increased production of diverse vegetables. Improved habitats were linked to enhanced ecosystem services: clean water, agricultural production, harvesting of wood, and increased cultural and spiritual activities. Key social benefits were increased social cohesion, education, and new business opportunities. We highlight that local communities can leverage natural capital for well-being and encourage policy support of civic ecology initiatives.

The study of Ecosystem services (ES) is a prolific field of research. Despite the great biological and cultural diversity, in Latin America, research in this field has been growing at a much slower rate than in the rest of the world. The study of ES is called upon to contribute to informed decision-making for the planning and conservation of the territory and to improve well-being. However, this can only be achieved if the various stakeholders' vision about their environment is considered, since they are the ones most impacted by such decisions. Our study was carried out in nine rural communities in three municipalities in central and northern Nicaragua, a rural country with high rates of rural poverty. We questioned the perceptions of rural land uses as providers of ES by rural communities, from a gender perspective. We addressed this question from the framework of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) that allowed us to interrelate such diverse topics as the study of ES, gender and land uses. In each community, we first requested the endorsement of the community leaders, and then we carried out semi-structured interviews and separate focus groups for men and women. We used participatory mapping and the pebble distribution method (PDM), to identify how gender identity influences perceptions about benefits, location, and access to ES. Both men and women recognized the benefits of nature but differed in the identification of land uses that most provide ES. Exceptions were the forest areas, agroforestry systems and rivers, all of which were recognized as providing the greatest amount of services. These results are especially useful in the development of public policies to reduce poverty and address gender gaps in rural communities.

Travail personnel d'étude et de recherche en paysage. Les agriculteurs par leurs pratiques agricoles contribuent au façonnage de nos paysages. Une relation particulière les lie. L’objectif de ce travail de recherche est de comprendre l’influence réciproque des pratiques agricoles des agriculteurs avec les paysages. On établira un socle de connaissances autour des discours du paysage agraire. Il apportera le vocabulaire spécifique au sujet. Il sera l’occasion de présenter l’apparition de ce lien qui les unit et de sonder comment le paysage se place dans les pratiques agricoles. Pour répondre à notre problématique, nous avons émis des hypothèses dans trois branches d’investigation. La première est la question spatiale ; puis la lecture singulière du paysage par l’agriculteur ; et pour finir les dynamiques du paysage par les pratiques agricoles garantes des paysages.Un travail d’enquête a été mené sur des éleveurs en moyenne montagne du Livradois-Forez. L’entretien s’est déroulé au sein de cinq fermes avec l’aide de documents iconographiques. À travers cette expérience, nous avons découvert que les influences réciproques des pratiques agricoles avec le paysage étaient soumises à différentes pressions qui conditionnent certains choix pris par les agriculteurs dans leurs pratiques. Ces pressions sont de différentes natures (foncière, économique, spatiale, sensible, etc.). Elles précarisent cette conscience paysagiste des agriculteurs. International audience; Context: Addressing the environmental impact of agriculture requires a comprehensive analysis of the system at stake, and accounting for the social diversity (i.e. social groups involved in farming and relationships between them) is particularly important for designing efficient policies aimed at mitigating these impacts. However, the integration of this diversity in environmental assessments remains challenging, partly due to the lack of frameworks for combining data and concepts belonging to bio-technical and social sciences. Objective: In this study, we aimed at assessing how the combination of the conceptual frameworks of comparative agriculture and territorial metabolism helps to better understand the environmental impacts of agriculture. In particular, we look at the crop-livestock integration as a possible way to reduce nitrogen losses from agriculture, and study how social diversity shapes this integration. Methods: Combining comparative agriculture and territorial metabolism frameworks, we carried out an intensive fieldwork in Petlad (Gujarat, India) organised in four steps so as to successively (i) capture farm diversity at the micro-regional level, (ii) build archetypes representing farming systems, (iii) assess nitrogen flows at farming systems' level and (iv) model nitrogen metabolism at village level. Results and conclusions: We found that despite obvious potential, crop-livestock interactions were limited, accounting for minor nitrogen flows compared to the flow of inputs, mainly synthetic fertilisers and feed concentrates. The output flows, mainly tobacco, cereals and milk, were also low and most of the input nitrogen was lost to the environment (surplus of over 600 kg N/ha from the cropping system balance), contributing to pollution. While large subsidies for synthetic fertilisers had a role in the development of such huge surpluses, our study showed that this environmentally harmful situation was also influenced by the existing socio-economic conditions and social relations in Petlad. Most of the owners who had sufficient access to land (>1 ha) focused on the very profitable tobacco production and tended to abandon livestock, which they no longer needed either technically or economically. Conversely, households with low or no access to land were motivated to raise dairy animals, in order to supplement small incomes from crops, but faced difficulties in feeding them. We conclude that promoting crop-livestock integration as a potential lever to reduce nitrogen surplus would be unlikely to succeed in the presence of such a strong social lock-in. Significance: Concurring with certain critiques of socio-ecological systems approaches, this result advocates for a better consideration of social diversity in the analysis of the environmental impacts of agriculture and in the design of interventions.

Considerable number of studies are produced to deal with one of the most important challenges of the 21th century, which is the triple challenge of: regenerating the life supporting services provided by the Earth system, achieving food and nutrition sovereignty that leaves no one behind, and ensuring that global food systems support socio-environmental justice. This triple challenge is intrinsically linked to the Gordian knot that characterizes present-day global agriculture, at once vital and threatening to human society. In the present study, this global Gordian knot is explored through the lens of the trajectories of a few dozen farming systems, all located in a micro-territory of Wallonia (Southern Belgium) at the heart of the old industrial Europe. The agroecosystems under study are all family farms, which are among the survivors of a socio-professional group that has shrunk dramatically in just a few decades. Our broad objective is to gain insight into the tenets of transition towards sustainable farming systems in Wallonia.An exploratory research phase contributes to set the scene of our 'core research'. The exploratory study shows that three types of discourses, and two opposite paradigms, split the conversation among Walloon stakeholders on the path to improve agriculture; moreover, it suggests that transition is mainly a matter of cognitive lock-in. Our core research builds upon these premises, while the 'Peasant Principle' (put forward by J.D. van der Ploeg) stands out as its main theoretical background. Our broad objective may therefore be reformulated as 'gaining insight into the tenets of repeasantization in Wallonia'. This is addressed through three research questions, namely: 'What makes a farming system more or less peasant?'; 'What is the link between farm survival strategies and the cognitive (un)locking process?'; and 'How to support repeasantization?'. Our approach is grounded into two deep-probing field studies. The first one is empirical, and essentially stems from a sample of 23 neighbouring farm families located in a homogeneous window of Wallonia, and whose trajectories have been explored through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The second field study is the in-depth review of what we term 'Farming Assessment Normal Science' (FANS), which refers to usual (i.e. mainstream) farm productivity assessment, with or without sustainability concerns, and encompassing both agronomic and economic farm productive performance. Following an abductive and interdisciplinary approach, we make the realities of encountered farm families dialoguing with a set of theories and disciplines all along the four chapters of the core research – this set includes the Peasant Principle, agricultural accounting, orthodox economics, economic history, (agro)ecology, heterodox economic schools, thermodynamics and psychodynamics of work.The core research begins with the first proposal framework to build a situated tool assessing farm 'peasantness degree' (PD), and framed by the Peasant Principle. The application of this framework to our Walloon case study results in a 'PD tool' specifically designed to assess the relative peasantness of farms under study. By translating the broad dimensions of the Peasant Principle into 168 very tangible situated indicators, the resulting PD tool provides a fine-grained insight on what makes a farm more or less peasant in Wallonia. Economic and agronomic productivity indicators, usually used to compare farms, had to be left out from our comparative analysis. The reflexive process inherent to the PD tool construction has thus raised the following question: 'Why usual (economic and agronomic) productivity indicators turn out to be unfit to compare farming styles?'. This emerging question is first addressed by showing that FANS is rooted into orthodox economics, meaning that, with or without sustainability concerns, usual assessment views farms through the 'Firm model', and thus relies on input-output analysis to assess farm agronomic and economic performance. Through the lenses of both, (i) the diverging realities and peasantness degrees of investigated Walloon families, and (ii) the nature of the farming process, five categories of issues affecting the validity of FANS are put forward. The first category is about practical issues, and the other categories relate to conceptual issues. The three first categories only relate to farm economic assessment, whereas the fourth and fifth categories relate to both, agronomic and economic farm productivity assessment.Altogether, these issues not solely evidence that usual productivity indicators and usual sustainability assessment provide misleading insights on farm performance, but that they provide 'bias-asymmetry' insights, that is: the more a farming style depletes the (re)productive capacity of its agroecosystem, the more its productive performance is overestimated; in contrast, the more a style cares to replenish the (re)productive capacity of its agroecosystem, the more its productive performance is underestimated. Hence we evidence that FANS tailored, and keeps sustaining, 'the productivity myth' and. As this mainstream science has (and continue to) shape(d) agricultural prescriptions and development, we also show that these are oriented towards the loss of agroecosystems' (re)productive capacity.While unveiling the productivity myth and its real-life implications, a framework drawing on the 'Flow-Fund model' (put forward by the heterodox economist N. Georgescu-Roegen) emerged as a sound alternative to assess farm productivity performance. Through the lens of the flow-fund balance, we rely on the distinctly different ways Walloon farmers manage their agroecosystem, and on the metabolic nature of the farming process, to empirically and theoretically demonstrate that: the more a farming style complies with the peasant mode, the more the farming process (or flow-fund balance) is managed with art, and coproduces negentropy; conversely, the less a farming style entails peasantness, the more the farming process is denatured, and the more entropy is by-produced. Thus, at the same time, a metabolic interpretation of the Peasant Principle is drawn up.From all these empirical and theoretical insights, the following question emerges: 'How do surviving farm families cope with decennia of prescriptions oriented towards the depletion of the (re)productive capacity of agroecosystems, and thus towards of the depletion of their own capacity to remain farmers?'. Dealing with this emerging question merges with one last aspect that needed to be addressed, namely the social phe- nomena of suffering, deactivation and suicide that undermine the modern farming world of Wallonia and beyond. Assuming that these social phenomena are closely tied, we focus on the root causes of social suffering among surviving farmers, and give the floor to the statements of encountered farm families. After highlighting strong identity markers that set Walloon farmers as a singular socio-profes-sional group, the sensitive issue of suffering is addressed through collective narratives of encountered farmers on :the post- WW2 mutation of the Walloon farming work environment towards a modern environment with increased and plural hostility. Then we propose a typology of the strategies, deployed by the investigated farmers of Piccard Wallonia, to survive such hostility. By articulating our peasantness framework and the 'psychodynamic model of work-related suffering' (put forward by Ch. Dejours), five types of survival strategies are described, and labelled according to their corresponding category of farmers: the new peasants, the TMCE-ists (i.e. conservation agriculture farmers), the racing strugglers, the lost strugglers and the near-deactivated. These insights on farmers' narratives into the plurality of the hostility, on the contrasting degrees to which it undermines farmers' psychosocial health, and on farm diverging strategies, altogether challenge the commonly held vision that economic hardship is the root cause of agricultural pro- pensity to suffering, deactivation and suicide. Instead these empirical insights verify our interpretative hypothesis, i.e. the mechanical link between farmers' suffering and their relation to prescriptions. The loss of peasantness indeed appears as a root cause of the ill-being of the modern farming world.To conclude, this work evidences that the productivity myth has given rise to the (miscalled) 'productivist' paradigm and to a system of prescriptions oriented towards the depletion of the (re)productive capacity of agroecosystems – in turn undermining the Earth system's (re)production capacity. The psychosocial health of farmers clearly is a key fund element, and its depletion appears as the ultimate bend of the vicious downward spiral fueled by the productivity myth. We furthermore conclude that the peasant mode of production stands for managing the farming process in a coherent and sustainable manner, whereas non- peasant (so-called entrepreneurial and capitalistic) modes incoherently and unsustainably denature the farming process. Hence 'completed' repeasantization appears as a negentropic process of fund replenishment, ensuring wealth coproduction at all scales – from the farm to the Earth system. 'Completed' de-peasantization (or industrialisation), for its part, appears as an entropic process of fund depletion, causing illth at all scales.On this basis, we suggest an alternative representation of agricultural modes and processes, which comes down a metabolic reconfiguration of the triangle proposed by J.D. van der Ploeg, and takes the form of a multidimensional continuum opposing two poles.The main lesson learned from this research thesis is that, to unravel the Gordian knot bound to modern agriculture, we need to break free from the productivity myth. In the face of today's challenges, the usual yet fallacious statement that 'losing peasantness may enhance farm productive performance and sustainability', is no longer be an option. To support the transition towards sustainable farming worlds, transformative support systems are needed, and such systems require to design and rely on indicators assessing the real performance of farms and agriculture. Therefore, as a perspective for further research, we propose the 'Farm Metabolism (FM) framework', i.e. a conceptual and analytical proposal that basically implies to rely on agroecosystem's flow-fund analysis. The metabolic (or biophysical) assessment framework sketched out here therefore paves the way to a strong sustainability assessment of farm productive performance. In turn, it could contribute to support the necessary repeasantization of 'modernized' farmers, for the well-being of farmers and human society as a whole., Un nombre considérable d'études sont réalisées pour répondre à l'un des plus importants défis du 21ème siècle, à savoir le triple défi de parvenir à la souveraineté alimentaire et nutritionnelle de tous, de régénérer les services vitaux fournis par le système Terre, et de veiller à ce que les systèmes alimentaires globaux contribuent à la justice socio-environnementale pour tous. Ce triple défi est foncièrement lié au nœud gordien qui caractérise l'agriculture moderne :une activité vitale et menaçante à la fois pour la société humaine. Dans la présente étude, ce nœud gordien à l'échelle globale est exploré à travers le prisme des trajectoires de quelques dizaines de systèmes agricoles situés dans un micro-territoire de la Wallonie (Belgique du Sud), soit au cœur de la vieille Europe industrielle. Les agroécosystèmes étudiés sont tous des fermes familiales, et les fermiers rencontrés comptent parmis les survivants d'un groupe socioprofessionnel qui s'est considérablement réduit en quelques décennies seulement. Cet outil traduit les dimensions générales du Pincipe Paysan en 168 indicateurs 'situés' très concrets, permettant ainsi de fournir un aperçu finement détaillé de ce qui rend une ferme wallonne plus ou moins paysanne qu'une autre. Les indicateurs de productivité agronomique et économique usuellement utilisés pour comparer les fermes, n'ont pas pu être inclus dans notre analyse comparative. Le processus réflexif inhérent à la construction de l'outil DP a ainsi soulevé la question suivante :'Pourquoi les indicateurs usuels de productivité agricole se sont-ils révélés inadaptés à la comparaison des styles agricoles ?'.Cette question émergeante est d'abord abordée en montrant que FANS est ancré dans l'économie orthodoxe. Cela implique que la manière usuelle d'évaluer les fermes – qu'il s'agisse ou non d'une évaluation de durabilité – utilise le 'modèle de la Firme' et, dès lors, se fonde sur des analyses intrants-extrants pour comparer les performances agronomiques et économiques des fermes et de l'agriculture. A travers les prismes, (i) des réalités et des degrés de paysanneté contrastés des familles agricoles enquêtées et (ii) de la nature du processus agricole, nous mettons en évidence cinq catégories de problèmes qui contestent la validité de FANS. La première catégorie se rapporte à des problèmes pratiques, et les quatre suivantes soulèvent des problèmes conceptuels. Non seulement l'ensemble de ces problèmes démontre que les indicateurs usuels de productivité (économique et agronomique) agricole, et les évaluations usuelles de durabilité agricole, donnent lieu à des arguments scientifiques erronés. Mais de plus, il est démontré que ces arguments comportent le biais-asymmétrique suivant :au plus un style agricole épuise la capacité (re)productive de l'agroécosystème, au plus sa performance productive est sur-estimée ;au contraire, au plus un style agricole veille à régénérer la capacité (re)productive de l'agroécosystème, au plus sa performance productive est sous-estimée. Nous montrons ainsi que FANS a conçu, et continue à entretenir, le 'mythe de la productivité'. Or ce mythe a façonné les prescriptions et le développement agricoles qui, par conséquent, sont orientés vers la perte de la capacité (re)productive des agroécosystèmes.Parallèlement à la mise en lumière du mythe de la productivité et de ses implications réelles, un cadre s'inspirant du 'modèle Flow-Fund' (formalisé par N. Georgescu-Roegen) laisse entrevoir une alternative prometteuse pour évaluer la productivité (agronomique et économique) réelle des fermes. A travers le prisme de la balance flow-fund, nous nous fondons sur les manières distinctement différentes dont les fermiers wallons gèrent leur agroécosystème, et sur la nature métabolique du processus agricole, pour démontrer empiriquement et théoriquement l'argument suivant :au plus un style agricole est proche du mode paysan, au plus le processus agricole (ou la balance flow-fund) est géré(e) avec art et co-produit de la néguentropie ;à l'inverse, au moins le style est paysan, au plus le processus agricole est dénaturé et au plus de l'entropie est coproduite. Ainsi, dans le même temps, nous établissons une interprétation métabolique du Principe Paysan.De tous ces constats empiriques et théoriques, la question suivante émerge :'Comment les familles agricoles qui ont survécu font-elles face aux décennies de prescriptions orientées vers l'épuisement de la capacité (re)productive de leurs agroécosystèmes, et donc vers l'épuisement de leur capacité à demeurer fermiers ?'. Cette question rejoint un dernier aspect qu'il était nécessaire d'aborder, à savoir les phénomènes sociaux de souffrance, de désactivation et de suicide qui minent le monde agricole moderne de Wallonie et d'ailleurs. Partant du postulat que ces phénomènes sociaux sont étroitement liés, nous nous concentrons sur les causes profondes de la souffrance sociale des fermiers subsistants, en veillant tout particulèrement à laisser la parole aux familles et fermiers que nous avons côtoyés. Nous commençons par souligner des marqueurs identitaires forts qui montrent que les agriculteurs wallons, au delà de leur hétérogénéité, forment un groupe socio-professionnel singulier. La question épineuse de la souffrance est abordée à travers le récit collectif des fermiers sur la mutation d'après-guerre, de l'environnement de travail agricole vers un environnement moderne caractérisé par une hostilité accrue et plurielle. Nous proposons alors une typologie des stratégies, déployées par les fermiers enquêtés de Wallonie picarde, pour subsister face à une telle hostilité. L'exercice typologique se fonde sur l'articulation de notre cadre de paysanneté et sur le 'modèle dynamique de la souffrance psychique au travail' (proposé par Ch. Dejours), mettant en évidence cinq types de stratégies de survie. Celles-ci sont désignées par la catégorie de fermiers qui leur est associée :les nouveaux paysans, les TMCE-istes (soit les fermiers en agriculture de conservation), les fonceurs à leur perte, et les désorientés. Cet aperçu empirique sur des récits et des stratégies de fermiers, réfute la vision communément véhiculée selon laquelle les difficultés économiques sont la cause profonde de la propension agricole à la souffrance, à la désactivation et au suicide. En revanche, cet aperçu confirme notre hypothèse interprétative, à savoir :l'existence d'un lien mécanique entre souffrance des fermiers et leur rapport aux prescriptions. La perte de paysanneté apparaît en effet comme une cause profonde du mal-être du monde agricole moderne. Pour conclure, ce travail démontre que le mythe de la productivité a engendré le paradigme (appelé à tort) 'productiviste' et le système de prescriptions agricoles qui dominent le monde agricole et l'orientent vers l'érosion de la capacité reproductive des agroécosystèmes – contribuant ainsi à l'érosion de la capacité reproductive du système Terre. La santé psychosociale des fermiers émerge clairement comme un des élément-clé du fund des agroécosystèmes, et son érosion apparaît comme le stade ultime de la spirale délétère alimentée par le mythe de la productivité. Nous parvenons également à la conclusion que le mode de production paysan signifie gérer le processus agricole de manière cohérente et durable; les modes non paysans (dits entrepreneuriaux et capitalistiques) eux dénaturent le processus agricole de manière incohérente et non durable. La repaysannisation 'aboutie' apparaît ainsi comme un processus néguentropique, producteur de richesse à tous les niveaux – du système agricole à celui de la Terre. La dépaysannisation (ou industrialisation) avancée des agroécosystèmes apparaît comme un processus entropique d'épuisement du fund, hautement producteur de coûts et de maux ('illth' en anglais) à tous les niveaux. C'est sur cette base, que nous proposons une représentation alternative des modes et processus agricoles. Essentiellement, cette représentation est une reconfiguration métabolique du triangle proposé par J.D. van der Ploeg, et se présent sous la forme d'un continuum multidimensionnel opposant deux pôles.La principale leçon tirée de cette thèse se résume ainsi :pour trancher le nœud gordien de l'agriculture moderne, il faut rompre avec le mythe de la productivité. Face aux défis actuels, l'argument usuel selon lequel 'la perte de paysanneté permet d'accroître les performances productives et la durabilité des fermes', n'est plus une option. Pour favoriser la transition vers des mondes agricoles durables, des systèmes de soutien transformateurs sont nécessaires, et ces systèmes requièrent de s'appuyer sur des indicateurs aptes à évaluer la performance réelle des styles agricoles et de l'agriculture. Nous proposons, en tant que perspective de recherche, le cadre 'Métabolisme de Ferme'. Cette proposition conceptuelle et analytique implique de se fonder sur des analyses flow-fund au niveau des agroécosystèmes, ouvrant ainsi la voie à une évaluation de la performance productive réelle des styles agricoles, et ce dans une perspective de durabilité forte. Resumo: O artigo trata da permanência de práticas clientelistas e das suas tensões com o enfoque participativo adotado no marco da política pública brasileira de desenvolvimento territorial rural, em particular no caso da implementação local do Programa Nacional de Desenvolvimento Territorial. Os resultados provêm do estudo do funcionamento do Colegiado Territorial e dos projetos implementados no Território Águas Emendadas no centro-oeste do Brasil. Recorre a um enfoque socioantropológico do clientelismo e da participação política mediante a análise da configuração social e das relações de instrumentalização tanto nos espaços participativos como nos projetos desse território. Os resultados mostram a existência de uma dimensão, não somente social, mas afetiva da prática de clientela que pode ser analisada como uma relação de reciprocidade assimétrica a partir do princípio da reciprocidade antropológica ou como um processo de intercâmbio político desigual, se for a partir da ciência política. Abstract: The study discusses the permanence of clientelistic practices and their tensions with the participatory approach adopted within the framework of the Brazilian public policy of rural territorial development. It examines, in particular, the case of local implementation of the National Program of Territorial Development. The results come from the study of the Territorial Collegiate functioning and the projects implemented in the Águas Emendadas Territory in the Brazilian Midwest. It was used a socio-anthropological approach of patronage and political participation through the analysis of the social configuration and the relations of instrumentalization as much in as in the participatory spaces and the projects of this territory. The results show the existence of a not only social but also an affective dimension of clientele practice that can be analyzed as an asymmetrical reciprocity relationship based on the principle of anthropological reciprocity or as a process of unequal political exchange, considering political science approach.

Among contemporary normative instruments of regulation, private and voluntary standards are a new mode of government in search of legitimacy. By considering the RSPO standard (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil), we analyze the normative political model underlying the so-called "multi-stakeholder" initiatives. Relying on a liberal composition of commonality and difference, these initiatives reshape elements of international human rights such as the notion of people's consent (Free Prior and Informed Consent) that NGOs introduced in the standard. We compare the "RSPO government" to national law, and the functioning of a state with respect to its legitimate functions and ideal principles, in particular, police and justice functions. Finally, we address the issues raised by the plurality of modes of normativity and evaluation in the RSPO government. The most vulnerable stakeholders' ("smallholders'", "local communities'") concerns have to be reshaped (and reduced) into formats that are accepted by the RSPO standard and government, when expressing their agreement for the use of their lands by corporations, or filing claims or complaints.

Parmi les instruments normatifs contemporains de régulation, les standards privés et volontaires relèvent d'un véritable mode nouveau de gouvernement en quête de légitimité. A partir du standard RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil), nous analysons le modèle politique normatif sous-jacent aux initiatives dites multi-stakeholders. En s'appuyant sur une composition libérale du commun, ces initiatives remodèlent et transforment des éléments de droits internationaux tels que la notion de consentement des peuples (Free Prior and Informed Consent) que des ONG ont introduite dans le standard. Nous comparons le "gouvernement RSPO " au droit national et au fonctionnement d'un Etat quant à ses fonctions légitimes et principes idéaux. Nous comparons en particulier les fonctions de police et de justice et leurs modalités d'expression. Enfin, nous abordons les questions soulevées par le pluralisme des modes de normativité et d'évaluation confrontés dans ce gouvernement. Les préoccupations des parties prenantes reconnues comme les plus vulnérables ("petits planteurs", "communautés locales") doivent être transformées (et réduites) pour être recevables dans le standard RSPO et son gouvernement, qu'il s'agisse d'expressions de leur accord pour l'usage de terres par des entreprises privées, de demandes ou de plaintes qu'elles déposent.
