The adolescent population with Down syndrome (DS) appears to show higher levels of body fat and lower levels of cardiorespiratory fitness or muscle strength than their peers without disabilities. There is a need to create physical activity programs to improve these data. The aim of this research was to determine the effects of a 16-week swimming program, strength program, and combined program (swimming and strength training) on body composition and health-related physical fitness on adolescents with DS and to assess whether there are differences in the results of the different training programs. Forty-five adolescents (17 female and 28 male; average age 15.5 [1.53] years) with DS were recruited and randomized to three groups (swim [n = 15], strength [n = 15], and combined [n = 15]). Results showed that the swim group had significant improvements in all health-related physical fitness variables and there was an improvement in some body-composition variables (p <.05). The strength and combined groups obtained minor improvements in the variables analyzed. In summary, a 16-week swim program consisting of three sessions of 60 min is able to improve levels of body composition and health-related physical fitness in adolescents with DS. The swim training program seems to be more effective in improving body composition and health-related physical fitness than the strength or combined program. Context: The purpose of the study was to develop normative ranges and standards for knee and shoulder isokinetic and anthropometric values. These standards can be qualitatively interpreted and allow practitioners to classify isokinetic and anthropometric values more objectively for university-level netball players. Design: Posttest only observational study design. All players were only evaluated once during the in-season to generate normative ranges. Methods: A total of 51 female players volunteered. Participants were evaluated on an isokinetic dynamometer at 60° per second to obtain knee-extensor and knee-flexor values as well as shoulder-flexor and shoulder-extensor values. A total of 16 anthropometric variables were collected including stature, body mass, 8 skinfolds, and 6 circumferences. Between-group differences were calculated to determine whether playing level was a differentiating factor in data. Results: Normative standards were developed for isokinetic parameters associated with the knee and shoulder joints as well as skinfolds and circumference measures. No statistically significant between-group differences were evident (χKruskal-Wallis²[2] = 3.96, P = .140). Conclusion: These standards can be used by coaches and practitioners to set attainable goals for individual players or those from secondary leagues, classify individual and team-based performances, and facilitate decision-making processes. Background: Lower maternal insulin sensitivity during pregnancy is associated with greater fetal adiposity. Physical activity can improve insulin sensitivity, but it is not known if physical behaviours influence the known association of maternal insulin sensitivity with offspring adiposity. This study aimed to investigate the moderating impact of physical behaviours on this association. Methods: Pregnant women (n = 812) from the Gen3G cohort were recruited during the first trimester of pregnancy and followed until delivery. At the first (V1) and second trimester (V2) hospital visits, Gen3G staff measured anthropometry, and participants reported sleep duration as well as leisure physical activity and sedentary behaviour via lifestyle questionnaires. We used plasma glucose and insulin values from the 75 g oral glucose tolerance test at V2 to calculate insulin sensitivity using the Matsuda index. We recorded birthweight from electronic medical records. Among a subset of neonates (n = 265), trained research staff measured skinfold thickness using a calibrated skinfold caliper following standardized protocols to estimate neonatal adiposity. Linear regression analyses assessed the association of insulin sensitivity with birthweight z-score and sum of neonatal skinfold thickness, adjusting for maternal age, race/ethnicity, gravidity, smoking, with and without adjustment for maternal body mass index at V1. We evaluated moderation by physical activity, sedentary behaviour, or nighttime sleep duration using interaction terms and stratified analyses for the association of maternal insulin sensitivity with offspring birthweight and with offspring adiposity. Results: Lower Matsuda index was associated with higher birthweight z-score (ß±SE= -0.180 ± 0.056, p = 0.001) and with higher sum of skinfold thickness (neonatal adiposity) (ß±SE=-0.877 ± 0.383, p = 0.02) in fully adjusted models. The association between Matsuda index and sum of skinfold thickness was weaker in women with higher levels of physical activity at V2 ([high ≥ 1.26 kcal/kg/day] ß±SE=-0.15 ± 0.65) compared to women with lower levels [low < 1.26 kcal/kg/day] ß±SE=-1.36 ± 0.51, P-interaction = 0.01). We also observed potential interactions of sleep and sedentary behaviour at V2 with Matsuda index for the association with birthweight z-score. We did not observe effect modification by levels of physical behaviours assessed at V1. Conclusion: The association between lower insulin sensitivity and higher neonatal adiposity was attenuated in women with higher physical activity levels in the second trimester, independent of maternal body mass index. Background: Serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) are established cardiovascular disease (CVD) markers, however accessibility to these markers is less in individuals from low-middle income countries. The non-invasive CVD risk marker especially skinfold measured fat percentages are less explored for its relevance with established serum biochemistry markers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 70 sedentary office workers (aged 30–40 years) who were healthy. Peripheral fat percentages were estimated from four skinfold thickness measurements and biochemistry markers were measured and analysed using standard laboratory measurements. Blood pressure was also measured. Multivariate linear regression models were drawn to establish the association between the non-invasive and invasive CVD risk markers. Results: The skinfold measured fat percentage was negatively associated with the HDL (coefficient β = -0.15, standard error SE = 0.07, p < 0.05). No significant relation between the other biochemistry parameters with the skinfold thickness. Age and BMI were found to be mediating the above relationship. Conclusions: Skinfold thickness derived fat percentage is associated with the few of the CVD markers (especially HDL). Age and BMI are crucial mediating factors for the fat measurement. Background: Elite kayaking demands peak conditioning, and tracking these athletes reveals the science behind world-class performance. Physiological demands and body composition changes in elite male kayakers were tracked during the preparatory and transition periods of a kayaking competitive season. Methods: Laboratory (body composition assessment and a 4 min all-out test in a kayak ergometer) on-field tests (4 × 1500 m incremental intermittent protocol with 30 s rest intervals in a kayaking/rowing track) were applied on separate days to follow eight elite male kayakers (23.1 ± 5.6 y; 80 ± 8.8 kg; 177.0 ± 6.8 cm) at the beginning of the kayaking season (preparatory period, M1; first week of October), 22 weeks later, at the beginning of the transition period (M2; last week of February), and 5 weeks later, at the end of the transition period, i.e., beginning of the competitive period of the season (M3; first week of April). M3 corresponded to the participation in international competitions. Results: Distance at peak oxygen uptake ( V ˙ O 2 peak ) on the kayak ergometer improved by 36.7 m from M1 to M3, the pace at V4 (aerobic capacity) was reduced (improved) by 25.2 s·km−1 from M1 to M2, and 25.6 s·km−1 by M3. Body weight decreased by 2.3 kg from M1 to M2, and fat mass percentage and kilograms decreased by 1.8% and 3.1%, respectively. Fat-free mass increased by 1.9% and 3.1%, respectively. Skinfold measurements showed a decrease in subscapular, suprailiac, abdominal, and geminal skinfold. Aerobic power ( V ˙ O2peak) in absolute values (in L·min−1) improved by 0.7 L·min−1 from M1 to M2, and by 1.1 L·min−1 by M3, and from M2 to M3 was ~0.5 L·min−1. Aerobic power in relative values improved by 15.0 from M1 to M2, and by 6.4 mL·kg−1·min−1 from M2 to M3. Conclusions: Elite male kayakers improved their physiological performance and body composition during the preparatory and transition phases of the competitive season. Notable gains in performance were mainly due to enhanced aerobic power, and positive body composition changes. Background: The prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide and it is known to be associated with many postoperative complications, including infection. Patients' body fat distribution may vary and body mass index (BMI) does not provide sufficient information about adipose tissue thickness of the lower extremities. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between thigh diameters and early postoperative prosthesis-related joint infections (PJI) in patients who underwent arthroplasty. Methods: The study included 76 patients and 114 knees who were operated on by a single surgeon and underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) due to primary knee osteoarthritis between May 2022 and September 2023 in a tertiary reference hospital. Circumference of the thickest part of the operated thigh (cm), preoperative erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, height, weight, BMI and the presence of early postoperative prosthesis-related joint infections were evaluated. Results: The mean BMI was 32.6 ± 4.2 (kg/m2). Two (2.6%) were normal weight, 14 (18.5%) were overweight, 58 (76.3%) were obese and 2 (2.6%) were morbidly obese. The mean circumference of the thickest part of the thigh was 57.56 ± 6.38 (cm). 6 patients were diagnosed with PJI in the acute phase. The mean circumference of the thickest part of the thigh was statistically significantly greater in the group with acute PJI compared to the group without PJI (p = 0.048). Conclusion: The incidence of acute PJI was found to be significantly higher in patients with larger thigh diameters, whereas no such relationship was observed for BMI. The incorporation of preoperative soft tissue envelope measurements into routine clinical examination may prove beneficial in reducing the risk of PJI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine whether accounting for skinfold thickness would reduce the variability observed on a subject-by-subject basis for the y-intercept and slope terms derived from the log-transformed EMG amplitude–power output relationship. We hypothesized that using skinfold thickness as a covariate would reduce the subject-by-subject variability in the y-intercept and slope terms and, therefore, indicate potential mean differences between muscle groups. Methods: Subjects had the skinfold from their three superficial quadriceps femoris muscles measured and then EMG electrodes placed over the three muscles. Thereafter, each subject performed an incremental single-leg knee-extensor ergometer exercise test to voluntary exhaustion. Results: The results indicated that using skinfold thickness as a covariate did not change the statistical outcome when comparing the mean values for the y-intercept or slope terms across the three superficial quadriceps femoris muscles. Malnutrition is a global phenomenon and may be contributing to the increasing size of the hemodialysis (HD) population in South Africa and is affecting morbidity and clinical outcomes. Our study assessed whether transferrin could be a possible marker for malnutrition in the HD population. Clinical parameters (including skinfold thickness and mid-upper arm circumference [MUAC]) and laboratory markers (including transferrin and hemoglobin) were measured during a six-month period in a sample of 59 HD patients. Linear regression analysis showed that MUAC (p = 0.027) as well as skinfold thickness (p = 0.021) had a significant association with transferrin levels within the HD participants. There was no significant association between transferrin levels or MUAC with hemoglobin levels (p = 0.075). Furthermore, the study found that decreased transferrin levels (< 2.15 g/dL to 3.80 g/dL) were closely related to malnutrition in the malnutrition distribution groups within the study, with 97.7% of HD participants being classified in one of the malnutrition groups. Thus, transferrin levels are a valuable marker for malnutrition within the HD patient population and can be included along with clinical assessment parameters such as MUAC and skinfold thickness as primary indicators for malnutrition. Objectives: The digit ratio (2D:4D) is a possible marker of prenatal hormone exposure. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between digit ratio (2D:4D) and anthropometric indexes in Chinese children and adolescents. Methods: This study is a cross‐sectional study. A school‐based survey among 685 children and adolescents aged 8–15 years were conducted by stratified cluster sampling. The length of index finger (2D) and ring finger (4D) of the left hand, height, sitting height (ST), weight, chest circumference (CC), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), and abdominal skinfold thickness (AST) were measured. Pearson correlation and multivariate linear regression were used to analyze associations between 2D:4D and above indexes. Results: In girls, 2D:4D was positively related to WC, AST, waist‐to‐height (WHtR), waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR) after adjusting for ages (p < 0.05). The WC, AST, WHtR, and WHR among girls with 2D:4D ≥ 1 were significantly higher than those among girls with 2D:4D < 1, respectively (p < 0.05). However, there was no correlations between digit ratio (2D:4D) and above anthropometric indexes in boys (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The 2D:4D was related to anthropometric indexes in girls, which suggests that the maternal prenatal hormone exposure might be related to the anthropometric indexes of their female offspring. This study investigates variations in skinfold thickness in a European professional football team within and across multiple seasons, including before and after COVID-19 restrictions. Skinfold thickness was measured in 49 male players on 32 occasions across three seasons (2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21). Intra- and inter-seasonal trends were examined by comparing values for the sum of eight skinfolds (sum8) at key time points using linear mixed models. In each season, the largest differences in sum8 occurred after the preseason period. These differences ranged from a mean difference (Mdiff) of −11.0 mm (p < 0.001) in 2018/19 to −4.8 mm (p < 0.001) in 2020/21. Increases in sum8 occurred after each off-season; however, the increase after the off-season before the 2020/21 season (which included the COVID-19 lockdown period) was the lowest in magnitude and was not statistically significant (Mdiff = 2.9 mm, p = 0.06). Changes occurring in sum8 between the start and end of the competitive season did not follow a consistent pattern and were generally smaller in magnitude than the changes between other seasonal time points. Despite the notable heterogeneity in sum8 between players, changes within players generally followed a similar pattern between the different seasonal timepoints. In summary, changes in skinfold thickness were predominantly related to off-season and 'preparation for competition' periods. Purpose: To develop a simple and convenient inflammation-nutrition-adiposity biomarker to complement the TNM staging system, further assess the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer cachexia. Methods: This study was a multi-centre cohort study. The triceps skinfold thickness-albumin index (TA) was calculated by combining the triceps skinfold thickness (TSF) and serum albumin levels. Kaplan–Meier analysis and Cox proportional risk regression models were used to assess the relationship between the TA and all-cause mortality. Internal validation was carried out. Results: We included 1025 patients with colorectal cancer cachexia, 61.2% of whom were male, with a mean age of 58.91 (12.45) years. As the TA increased, overall mortality decreased in female patients (hazard ratio [HR], 0.95) but not in male patients (HR, 0.99). Multivariate Cox analysis showed that patients in the normal TA group had a significantly lower risk of death than those in the low TA group (HR, 0.53, 95% CI, 0.40–0.72). Patients with a normal TA had a lower risk of malnutrition, poor quality of life, and poor short-term prognosis than those with a low TA. Background: Excess body adiposity and skin irregularities represent a major problem in today's society. Currently, radiofrequency‐based devices constitute an increasingly popular medical‐aesthetic application and a powerful non‐invasive method to combat this problem. Objective: This study aims to determine the efficacy and safety of the high‐frequency device Zionic™ (Termosalud, Inc., Gijón, Spain) in reducing body contouring and improving skin appearance in the abdomen/flanks or thighs. Materials and Methods: Thirty nine individuals were treated with the Zionic™ device in the abdomen/flanks or thighs. A total of 8 sessions of 40–50 min each, 72/96 h apart were performed. At baseline, body measurements were taken including photographs, body contours, and ultrasound scans to assess dermal thickness, dermal echogenicity, and subcutaneous fat thickness. The measurements were repeated after the eight sessions for comparison and analysis. Quantitative data was complemented with a customized survey to evaluate participants satisfaction level. Results: At the follow‐up visit, a significant average reduction of 3% in abdomen/flanks circumferences and 2% in thighs contours was noticed. Abdomen/flanks and thighs subcutaneous fat layer thickness was significantly reduced by 8% and 6%, respectively. Dermal echogenicity changes, related to skin collagen content and organization, showed non‐significant increasing tendencies of 7% for abdomen/flanks and 8% for thighs. Thighs dermal thickness was significantly increased by 6%. Results were associated to a high satisfaction level (80%) and no severe adverse events. Conclusion: Zionic™ treatment is a safe, effective, and well‐tolerated noninvasive procedure for body contouring and improvement of skin properties in abdomen, flanks, and thighs. Summary: Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic has significantly changed the lifestyle and dietary habits of societies worldwide. The aim of the study was to assess changes in the distribution of fat tissue and skinfold thickness in adolescents (aged 11–15) from Kraków during the COVID‐19 pandemic period. Methods: Two cross‐sectional studies conducted in 2020 and 2022 (before and after the pandemic) involved 1662 adolescents from the Kraków population. Skinfold thickness measurements were taken. The trunk adiposity index, limbs‐to‐trunk fat ratio and limbs‐to‐total skinfold ratio were calculated. Statistical analysis employed a two‐way ANOVA, Tukey's HSD test and the Kruskal–Wallis test, depending on the normality of the distribution. Results: Higher skinfold thicknesses were observed in the majority of age groups in both sexes from the 2022 cohort in comparison with the 2020 cohort. Additionally, higher values of the trunk adiposity index and the limbs‐to‐total skinfold ratio in most age groups were observed. However, an inverse trend was observed in the limbs‐to‐trunk fat radio. Conclusions: The introduced restrictions such as lockdown, remote learning, reduced physical activity and changes in dietary habits could have influenced the distribution of fat tissue and skinfold thickness amongst adolescents from Kraków. Aims Methods Results Conclusions Less than 50% of patients treated for hypertension reach a target office systolic blood pressure (SBP). We aimed to evaluate the role of adiposity on antihypertensive drug responses in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients.Estimated glomerular filtration rates, body mass index (BMI), skinfold thickness (SFT), body surface areas and waist circumferences of 150 hypertensive patients naïve to treatment were measured. Treatment protocols were started as combination of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE‐I) plus calcium channel blocker (CCB), angiotensin receptor blocker plus CCB or ACE‐I plus diuretic. Pre‐treatment and change in blood pressure (ΔBP) after 4 weeks treatment were determined. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to find independent predictors of Δblood pressure changes, and multivariable binary logistic regression analysis to find independent predictors of target SBP < 140 mmHg at 4 weeks.A total of 104 patients reached the target systolic pressure of <140 mmHg at 4 weeks. Triceps, mid‐abdomen and subscapular SFT were significantly thicker in the uncontrolled blood pressure group (P = .011, P = .006 and P = .016, respectively). Pretreatment SBP (r = 0.644), pretreatment diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (r = 0.188), subscapular SFT (r = −0.318), suprailiac SFT (r = −0.211) and ΔDBP (r = 0.433) were correlated with ΔSBP in correlation analysis. Pretreatment SBP (β = 0.644, 95% CI = 0.697–0.993, P < .001), subscapular SFT (β = −0.253, 95% CI = −0.886–−0.329, P < .001), pretreatment DBP (β = −0.380, 95% CI = −0.1001– −0.453, P = .001) and ΔDBP (β = 0.401, 95% CI = 0.377–0.796, P < .001) were independent predictors of ΔSBP in multivariable linear regression analysis. Subscapular SFT was an independent predictor of target SBP < 140 mmHg in multivariable logistic regression analysis (OR = 0.895, 95% CI = 0.832–0.963, P = .003).Subscapular SFT may be a valuable marker for prediction of response to antihypertensive drugs. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of skull-femoral traction followed by osteotomy correction in patients with severe spinal scoliosis and split cord malformation. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed ten cases of severe spinal scoliosis with Pang I type split cord malformation treated between August 2012 and August 2023. Patients underwent skull-femoral traction prior to osteotomy correction. We assessed changes in height, weight, coronal and sagittal Cobb's angles, and physiological indicators such as vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and blood gas levels before, during, and after treatment. Results: Traction duration ranged from 9 to 19 days, with height and weight showing significant increases post-treatment. The coronal Cobb's angle improved from pre-treatment to post-corrective surgery and remained stable at the final follow-up. Similar improvements were observed in the sagittal plane. Physiological indicators such as VC, FVC, and FEV1, as well as blood gas levels, normalized after treatment. Nutritional status, indicated by triceps skinfold thickness, albumin, and transferrin concentrations, also improved. No neurological complications or device-related complications occurred during or after treatment. Conclusion: Skull-femoral traction followed by osteotomy correction is a safe and effective treatment for severe spinal scoliosis with split cord malformation, offering an alternative to high-risk procedures. To examine the relationship between the energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) and nutritional status, anthropometric measurements, subjective global evaluations (SGA) and biochemical parameters of chronic kidney disease patients. Cross-sectional analyses were performed on data collected from individuals. Participants included 119 adults aged 19 years and older, who had data from at least three days of valid 24-hour dietary recall data. Main outcome measures nutritional status, anthropometric measurements, SGA and biochemical parameters were collected. Statistical analyses performed Mann–Whitney U test, ANOVA, Kruskal–Wallis and ANCOVA test was used. It was determined that 79.8% of the patients were well-nourished, 19.3% had moderate malnutrition, and 0.9% had severe malnutrition. The patients with severe malnutrition was in the last quartile. It was determined that macronutrients and all vitamin and mineral intakes decreased in the last quartile values compared to the first quartile values (P < 0.05). After adjustment for age, sex, energy intake and glomerular filtration rat, there was a significant differences in triceps skinfold thickness and body fat percentage among the four quartiles. There was an increase in the C reactive protein levels from the first quartile to the third quartile (P < 0.05). This study shows that E-DII is a good tool for assessing the overall inflammatory potential of diet in chronic kidney disease patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Swelling, effusion, tenderness, and pain seen in the joints of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). This disease may cause limitation in joint movements, muscle weakness, atrophy, balance, and gait disorders. Physical fitness is accepted as an important determinant of health in both childhood and adolescence. The aim was to evaluate the physical fitness of children/ adolescents with JIA and compare it with healthy peers. Materials and Methods: Seventy children/adolescents were included (35 JIA and 35 healthy). The Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) and the Brockport physical fitness test battery were used for evaluation. The Brockport physical fitness test battery consists of dominant handgrip strength, curl-up, push-up, trunk lift, shoulder stretch, sit and reach tests, skinfold thickness (calf/triceps/subscapular) measurements, and PACER 20 m test. Results: A significant difference was found in all sub-parameters of CHAQ (P < .05) and dominant hand grip strength (P = .037), curl-up test (P < .001), trunk lift test (P = .018), shoulder stretch (P < .001) and PACER 20 m test (P < .001) tests in favor of the healthy group. Conclusion: Children/adolescents with JIA demonstrated lower performance compared to their healthy peers in muscular and cardiovascular capacity tests (curl-up test, PACER 20 m test, trunk lift test, dominant hand grip strength test, and shoulder stretch test). Body composition assessment helps conducting a healthy life or tracking the effectiveness of a weight management therapy. Ultrasound (US)-based body composition research has gained momentum because of the emergence of portable and inexpensive instruments bundled with user-friendly software. Previously, US-based assessment of body fat percentage (% BF) was found precise, but inaccurate in certain populations. Therefore, this study sought to compute % BF from subcutaneous fat thicknesses (SFs) given by US converting an anthropometric formula that involves skinfold thicknesses (SKFs) measured at the same sites. The symmetry of the body with respect to the central sagittal plane is an underlying assumption in both anthropometry and US-based body composition assessment, so measurements were taken on the right side of the body. Relying on experimental data on skinfold compressibility, we adapted 33 SKF formulas for US use and tested their validity against air displacement plethysmography on a study group of 97 women (BMI = 25.4 ± 6.4 kg/m2, mean ± SD) and 107 men (BMI = 26.7 ± 5.7 kg/m2). For both sexes, the best proprietary formula had Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) between 0.7 and 0.73, standard error of estimate (SEE) < 3% BF and total error (TE) > 6% BF—mainly because of the underestimation of % BF in overweight and obese subjects. For women (men) the best adapted formula had CCC = 0.85 (0.80), SEE = 3.2% (2.4%) BF, and TE = 4.6% (5.4%) BF. Remarkably, certain adapted formulas were more accurate for overweight and obese people than the proprietary equations. Background The long-standing widespread prevalence of obesity includes issues of its evaluation. Nutritional status may be assessed using various tools and methods; among others simple anthropometric measurements are well established. Widely used body mass index (BMI), presents an obstacle of needing to calculate a standard deviation score (SD) for correct use in the child population. As BMI overlooks body composition, it is necessary to evaluate fat and muscle mass with different methods. Established skinfolds and circumferences are used in many variations and equations to accomplish that goal; however, the parameters used in these methods also undergo secular changes. Furthermore, secular changes have been documented in fat mass distribution. The aim of the study is to assess secular changes of skinfolds thickness and body circumferences and evaluate their validity for use in clinical practice and population research. Methods and sample Our database consisted of a recent (2016–2022) sample with 594 participants (298 males) and a reference sample (from 1990) with 2,910 participants (1,207 males). Both cohorts comprised Czech preschool children, aged 4.00 to 6.99 years. With standard methodology, anthropometric parameters were obtained for 13 skinfolds and eight circumferences, by trained staff. The equations of Slaughter, Durnin and Deurenberg were correspondingly calculated. Statistical evaluation was conducted in the R programming language, using Welch’s test, Cohen’s d and the Bland–Altman method. Results Our study found significant increases in skinfold thickness on the abdomen, chest I. and forearm, with high clinical relevance (p ≥ 0.01; d = range from 0.20 to 0.70). Contrastingly, apart from the abdominal area, a decrease of circumferences was observed. The body fat percentage estimation equations were tested for bias in the recent sample in the context of bioimpedance analysis with the Bland–Altman method. All equations are suitable for application in clinical use. Discussion Documented secular changes in fat mass distribution are only part of a contemporary accelerating trend of obesity prevalence. Our findings support the trend of a decline of circumferences and rise of skinfold thickness in corresponding areas, especially on the limbs, that is evidenced by the trend of latent obesity. The results of the study show the need to complement established diagnostic procedures in childhood obesitology with abdominal and midthigh circumferences and optionally even the maximal circumference of the forearm. These circumferences should always be measured alongside the skinfold thickness of the region. Only in this way can the overall adiposity of an individual with regard to secular changes, including the detection of latent obesity, be objectively evaluated.

The prevalence of childhood metabolic syndrome is rising with an increase in obesity. The current confirmatory diagnostic methods for metabolic syndrome are invasive. Triceps Skinfold Thickness (TSFT) measurement is a non-invasive alternative. This cross-sectional study evaluated the performance of TSFT for screening overweight and obese adolescents aged 10–16 years for metabolic syndrome. Out of 60 participants, 17 (28%) had metabolic syndrome. The mean (SD) TSFT measurements were significantly higher in adolescents with metabolic syndrome compared to those without metabolic syndrome [29.4 (6.0) vs. 24.3 (7.6); P = 0.018]. A cutoff of 26.7 mm for TSFT demonstrated 88% sensitivity and 72% specificity in predicting metabolic syndrome. TSFT was found as promising non-invasive screening tool for metabolic syndrome. Objectives. The reliability of predictive body fat equations remains unclear due to their inappropriate use across different subject cohorts and conditions. The objective of this study was to validate and cross-validate equations to predict total and regional body fat in young physically active males. Material and methods. Three hundred and five young male participants were divided into the following groups: active validation (n=165), active cross-validation (n=70), or sedentary cross-validation ones (n=70). The study used a stratified random sampling based on weekly physical activity level. The total and regional body fat mass were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) after an overnight fast. Simultaneous measurements of height, body mass, skinfold thickness, body mass index, and body circumferences were taken. The total and regional body fat predictive equations were generated using multiple linear stepwise regression models. The coefficient of determination (R²) and standard error of estimation (SEE) were calculated to examine the accuracy of the predictive equations. Furthermore, cross-validation groups were analysed. Results. The percentage of total body fat, trunk fat, legs fat, arms fat, and body mass index of active cross-validation were found to be significantly lower than in the sedentary cross-validation groups. Introduction: While the influence of various factors on classical androgen synthesis in children and adolescents and its impact on puberty has been widely investigated, there appear to be gaps and contradictory findings regarding the association of overweight and obesity with the synthesis of adrenal-derived 11-oxygenated androgen (11-OA) serum levels. With this study, we aimed to examine how overweight and obesity affect 11-OA serum levels during puberty in a large cohort of children and adolescents. Methods: Our cohort comprised 1,054 healthy children aged 6–19 years providing serum samples at a total of 1,734 visits. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to quantify 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), 11-ketoandrostendione (11-KA4), 11-β-hydroxytestosterone (11-OHT), 11-β-hydroxyandrostendione (11-OHA4), testosterone, androstenedione, and DHEAS. In addition, we assessed BMI-SDSs, skinfold thicknesses, and Tanner stages. The significance level α was set to α = 0.05. Results: Increases in 11-KT, 11-KA4, 11-OHT, and 11-OHA4 levels were observed in boys and girls during puberty. 11-KT (β = 0.2, p < 0.001), 11-KA4 (β = 0.16, p < 0.001), and 11-OHA4 (β = 0.12, p = 0.003) were positively correlated with BMI in boys aged 13 years and under. 11-KT (β = 0.1, p = 0.047) was positively correlated with BMI in girls aged 11 years and under. 11-OHT was positively correlated with BMI independent of age (boys 13 years and under: β = 0.17, p < 0.001; over 13 years: β = 0.14, p = 0.001; girls 11 years and under: β = 0.17, p < 0.001; over 11 years: β = 0.18, p < 0.001). Conclusion: We found increasing 11-OA serum levels throughout all Tanner stages. 11-OAs were observed to be associated with BMI and skinfold thickness, suggesting that overweight and obesity may be associated with pubertal alterations in 11-OA serum levels. Background. Muscle hypertrophy is one of the main goals of resistance training and is frequently associated with an increase in muscle cross-sectional area (CSA). Imaging techniques are valid and reliable techniques for measuring CSA but are inaccessible to most professionals. Anthropometric-based multiple regression equations (i.e. using circumference and skinfolds outcomes) have been proposed to estimate muscle CSA describing a limited number of muscles. Purpose. The aim of this study was to develop anthropometric-based multiple regression equations using ultrasound images to estimate CSA of pectoralis major, biceps brachii, triceps brachii, rectus abdominis, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius lateralis and medialis muscles at two distinct regions for each muscle assessed. Methods. Thirty trained women and men (mean ± SD; body mass = 69.6 ± 11.1 kg; stature = 168.5 ± 8.9 cm; and age = 25.7 ± 4. years) participated in the study. Circumference and skinfold measurements were taken at the same points where ultrasound images were acquired to evaluate the CSA of muscles analyzed. Muscle CSA area was assessed using panoramic-view ultrasound. Results. Seventeen multiple regression equations were developed using measures of circumference, skinfold, body weight, height and muscle CSA. Conclusions. Ten equations developed presented the relative errors between 7.2 and 19.9%. These values are comparable or less than those found in equations commonly used by sport and exercise professionals. Thus, these equations are recommended for single-time point estimation of muscle CSA. Background: Diminished muscle protein synthesis in cirrhosis leads to reduced strength and mass, impacting daily activities and overall quality of life. Aims: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of exercise intervention in body composition, exercise capacity, fatigue, and quality of life in patients with liver cirrhosis. Methods: A systematic search of medical databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and CINAHL, was executed from their inception to November 2022. The inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials comparing exercise interventions with a control group that did not receive exercise interventions. Results: From the initially identified 2,565 articles, eight studies with a total of 220 patients were eligible for inclusion in this meta-analysis. According to the meta-analysis, exercise significantly improved the six-minute walk distance (6MWD) by 68.93 m (95% CI 14.29–123.57) compared to the control group. Furthermore, the subgroup analysis revealed that combing exercise with amino acid supplementation had a greater positive effect on the 6MWD (MD = 144.72, 95% CI 87.44–202.01). Exercise also significantly increased thigh circumference (MD = 1.26, 95% CI 0.12–2.39) and the thigh ultrasound average compression index (MD = 0.07, 95% CI 0.00–0.14). Moreover, exercise significantly decreased fatigue levels by 0.7 points in patients with liver cirrhosis (95% CI 0.38–1.03). However, no significant effects were observed on body mass index (BMI), fat mass, fat-free mass, and quality of life. Conclusions: Exercise can improve exercise capacity, thigh muscle thickness, and fatigue in patients with cirrhosis, but it does not have a significant impact on fat mass, BMI, or quality of life. Dyslipidemias are prevalent cardiovascular risk factors in Latin America. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of anthropometric indicators in detecting lipid profile alterations in Peruvian individuals. A diagnostic test study with secondary analysis of the PERU MIGRANT study was conducted using index tests based on waist circumference and skinfold thickness. Outcomes included hypercholesterolemia, low HDL-c, elevated triglycerides, and high total cholesterol to HDL-c ratio (TC/HDL-c). Receiver operating characteristic curves and area under the curve (AUC) were assessed with optimal cutoff points determined by the Youden index, stratified by sex. A number of 972 participants were included. Waist circumference showed the highest AUC for hypercholesterolemia (0.65 in women, 0.67 in men). The waist-to-height ratio showed the highest AUC for elevated triglycerides (AUC: 0.66). For low HDL-c, waist-to-hip ratio in women (AUC: 0.62) and waist-to-height ratio in men (AUC: 0.65) performed best. Waist-to-height ratio demonstrated AUCs ≥0.70 for elevated TC/HDL-c ratio in both sexes, with waist circumference having an AUC of 0.71 in men. Waist-based tests demonstrated moderate to high diagnostic capabilities for lipid alterations, particularly for elevated TC/HDL-c ratio. Further research is needed to confirm these findings. Background: Distal triceps tendon ruptures occur most commonly in middle-aged males, with possible rupture locations including the musculotendinous junction, mid-tendon, or most commonly, at the tendinous insertion. This surgical technique video demonstrates a hybrid distal triceps tendon repair construct utilizing transosseous sutures, SpeedBridge compression, and knotless suture anchor fixation. Indications: Indications for this procedure include an acute injury with complete avulsion of the distal triceps tendon from the olecranon and extension weakness. The goals of surgical repair include restoration of the tendon footprint on the olecranon and the creation of a strong fixation construct that balances tension to optimize healing and restore functional range of motion. Technique Description: The proximal avulsed tendon is prepared with two number 2 suture tapes placed in a locking Krackow fashion. The locking stitch exit point is determined at a distance proximal to the distal end of the tendon to optimize tension after the reduction of the tendon to the footprint. Two looped sutures are then passed through the tendon at the same exit level as the locking stitch, 1 on the medial and lateral sides of the locking stitch, respectively. Two transosseous tunnels are drilled obliquely, from proximal to distal, through the olecranon. A 4.75-mm suture anchor is then drilled and tapped in the proximal ulna, in between 2 transosseous tunnel exit points, for lateral placement. The medial and lateral locked stitches are passed through the medial and lateral transosseous tunnels, respectively. The SpeedBridge construct is formed by passing one suture from each locking stitch limb back through the tendon using the previously placed looped sutures as shuttling devices. After appropriate tensioning, the sutures are secured into the previously drilled 4.75-mm suture anchor in a specific fashion. Results: Current literature suggests that the SpeedBridge technique for triceps tendon repair demonstrates good functional and clinical outcomes with high satisfaction rates, elbow functional scores, and rates of returning to work/activity, coupled with low complication rates. Conclusion: The hybrid SpeedBridge construct is an effective technique for acute distal triceps tendon repair. Introduction: Lipodystrophy syndromes are rare diseases that can present with a broad range of symptoms. Delays in diagnosis are common, which in turn, may predispose to the development of severe metabolic complications and endorgan damage. Many patients with lipodystrophy syndromes are only diagnosed after significant metabolic abnormalities arise. Prompt action by clinical teams may improve disease outcomes in lipodystrophy syndromes. The aim of the Rapid Action Plan is to serve as a set of recommendations from experts that can support clinicians with limited experience in lipodystrophy syndromes. Methods: The Rapid Action Plan was developed using insights gathered through a series of advisory meetings with clinical experts in lipodystrophy syndromes. A skeleton template was used to facilitate interviews. A consensus document was developed, reviewed, and approved by all experts. Results: Lipodystrophy is a clinical diagnosis. The Rapid Action Plan discusses tools that can help diagnose lipodystrophy syndromes. The roles of clinical and family history, physical exam, patient and family member photos, routine blood tests, leptin levels, skinfold measurements, imaging studies, and genetic testing are explored. Additional topics such as communicating the diagnosis to the patients/ families and patient referrals are covered. A set of recommendations regarding screening and monitoring for metabolic diseases and end-organ abnormalities is presented. Finally, the treatment of lipodystrophy syndromes is reviewed. Discussion: The Rapid Action Plan may assist clinical teams with the prompt diagnosis and holistic work-up and management of patients with lipodystrophy syndromes, which may improve outcomes for patients with this rare disease. Objective: To investigate the prognostic performance of radiomics analysis of lesion-specific pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) with the guidance of CT derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) in coronary artery disease (CAD). Materials and methods: The study retrospectively analyzed 608 CAD patients who underwent coronary CT angiography. Lesion-specific PCAT was determined by the lowest CT-FFR value and 1691 radiomic features were extracted. MACE included cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, unplanned revascularization and hospitalization for unstable angina. Four models were generated, incorporating traditional risk factors (clinical model), radiomics score (Rad-score, radiomics model), traditional risk factors and Rad-score (clinical radiomics model) and all together (combined model). The model performances were evaluated and compared with Harrell concordance index (C-index), area under curve (AUC) of the receiver operator characteristic. Results: Lesion-specific Rad-score was associated with MACE (adjusted HR = 1.330, p = 0.009). The combined model yielded the highest C-index of 0.718, which was higher than clinical model (C-index = 0.639), radiomics model (C-index = 0.653) and clinical radiomics model (C-index = 0.698) (all p < 0.05). The clinical radiomics model had significant higher C-index than clinical model (p = 0.030). There were no significant differences in C-index between clinical or clinical radiomics model and radiomics model (p values were 0.796 and 0.147 respectively). The AUC increased from 0.674 for clinical model to 0.721 for radiomics model, 0.759 for clinical radiomics model and 0.773 for combined model. Conclusion: Radiomics analysis of lesion-specific PCAT is useful in predicting MACE. Combination of lesion-specific Rad-score and CT-FFR shows incremental value over traditional risk factors. The primary aim of this study was to present the physical profile of female cricketers. Secondary, was to assess any differences between playing standard (professional vs. non-professional) and position (seam bowler vs. non-seam bowler). Fifty-four female cricketers (professional seam bowler [n = 16]; professional non-seam bowler [n = 17]; non-professional seam bowler [n = 10]; non-professional non-seam bowler [n = 11]) undertook a battery of physical and anthropometric assessments during the off-season period. Participant's physical profile was assessed via the broad jump, countermovement jump, isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP), 20 m sprint, run-2 cricket specific speed test, and Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level-1 (Yo-Yo-IR1). The sum-of-eight skinfold measurement was also recorded for professional cricketers only. Differences between playing standard and position were assessed with a two-way ANOVA. Seam bowlers possessed a significantly (p < 0.04) greater stature and had a higher body mass than non-seam bowlers. Non-seam bowlers recorded significantly (p < 0.01) further broad jump, higher normalised peak vertical force during the IMTP, and ran greater distances during the Yo-Yo-IR1. Professional cricketers produced significantly further run distances for the Yo-Yo-IR1 and faster run-2 times for the dominant turning side than non-professional cricketers. This study provides valuable insights into the physical profile of female cricketers across playing standards and positions which practitioners can use to direct and enhance training outcomes. The appropriate use of predictive equations in estimating body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) depends on the device used and the subject's age, geographical ancestry, healthy status, physical activity level and sex. However, the presence of many isolated predictive equations in the literature makes the correct choice challenging, since the user may not distinguish its appropriateness. Therefore, the present systematic review aimed to classify each predictive equation in accordance with the independent parameters used. Sixty-four studies published between 1988 and 2023 were identified through a systematic search of international electronic databases. We included studies providing predictive equations derived from criterion methods, such as multi-compartment models for fat, fat-free and lean soft mass, dilution techniques for total-body water and extracellular water, total-body potassium for body cell mass, and magnetic resonance imaging or computerized tomography for skeletal muscle mass. The studies were excluded if non-criterion methods were employed or if the developed predictive equations involved mixed populations without specific codes or variables in the regression model. A total of 106 predictive equations were retrieved; 86 predictive equations were based on foot-to-hand and 20 on segmental technology, with no equations used the hand-to-hand and leg-to-leg. Classifying the subject's characteristics, 19 were for underaged, 26 for adults, 19 for athletes, 26 for elderly and 16 for individuals with diseases, encompassing both sexes. Practitioners now have an updated list of predictive equations for assessing body composition using BIA. This study verified the diagnostic accuracy of the nutritional status classified by the international height and BMI references of the World Health Organization (WHO) (WHO/2007), International Obesity Task Force (IOTF/2012) and MULT (2023). The data pool was composed by 22 737 subjects aged five to 16 years from the Santos and Porto Alegre surveys. A correlation matrix between the z-scores of the BMI references and the skinfold measurements was calculated through the Pearson correlation coefficient (r), and the subject's nutritional status was classified according to the international growth references. The accuracy for diagnosing obesity was performed separately by sex and using the 95th percentile of the triceps and subscapular skinfold sum, while Lin's concordance coefficient, Bland–Altman method and the Cohen's Kappa coefficient (Kappa) were used to verify the concordance and reliability among the BMI references. The correlation matrix showed a high positive correlation among the BMI z-scores (r ≥ 0·99) and among the skinfold measurements (r ≥ 0·86). The prevalence of stunting was higher when applying the MULT reference (3·4 %) compared with the WHO reference (2·3 %). The Bland–Altman plots showed the lowest critical difference (CD) between the height references of WHO and MULT (CD = 0·22). Among the BMI references, the WHO obesity percentile presented lower performance than MULT for boys, presenting a lower +LR value (WHO = 6·99/MULT 18 years = 10·99; 19 years = 8·99; 20 years = 8·09) for the same −LR values (0·04). Therefore, MULT reference holds promise as a valuable tool for diagnosing childhood obesity, particularly when considering sex differences. Background: Guatemala suffered from civil war and high levels of inequality and childhood stunting in the second half of the 20th century, but little is known about inequalities in secular trends in adiposity. Objectives: To investigate differences in childhood body mass index (BMI) and skinfold thickness trajectories from 1979 to 1999 between three groups of children: High socioeconomic position (SEP) Ladino, Low SEP Ladino, and Low SEP Indigenous Maya. Methods: The sample comprised 19 346 children aged 7–17 years with 54 638 observations. The outcomes were height, BMI, triceps skinfold thickness (TST), and subscapular skinfold thickness (SST) Z‐scores according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) references. Sex‐specific multilevel models were used to estimate and compare mean trajectories from 1979 to 1999 between the three groups. Results: Mean Z‐scores were always highest for High SEP Ladino children and lowest for Low SEP Maya children. Despite their very short stature, the Low SEP groups had SST trajectories that were above the 50th centile. The BMI trajectories were relatively flat and within one major centile band of the CDC median, with differences between the three groups that were small (0.2–0.3 Z‐scores) and did not attenuate over time. Conversely, the TST Z‐score trajectories demonstrated larger positive secular trends (e.g., from −1.25 in 1979 to −0.06 in 1999 for Low SEP Maya boys), with differences between the three groups that were large (0.5–1.2 Z‐scores) and did attenuate over time (in boys). Secular trends and between‐group difference in the SST Z‐score trajectories were less pronounced, but again we found stronger evidence in boys that the estimated inequalities attenuated over time. Conclusions: Secular trends and inequalities in skinfolds differ from those for BMI in Guatemalan children. Differences between groups in skinfolds attenuated over time, at least in boys, but whether this is good news is questionable given the very short stature yet relatively large subscapular skinfolds of the Low SEP groups. This research attempted to explore the effect of induction therapy on changes in nutritional status and chemotherapy complications in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. One hundred newly diagnosed patients were randomly assigned to observation and control groups, each comprising 50 participants. Both groups received chemotherapy; however, their dietary regimen differed. The control group received a conventional low-fat diet, while the observation group received onefourth to one-third of daily total energy intake through enteral nutrition preparations and the remaining energy intake through a conventional low-fat diet until the end of the induction remission period. This study revealed no significant differences between the two groups regarding mid-arm circumference, skinfold thickness, body mass index, and serum albumin levels before and after therapy. After therapy, total protein and prealbumin levels were significantly higher in the observation group compared to the control group. Moreover, the incidence of neutropenia and anemia, average numbers of transfusions of red blood cells and platelets, alanine aminotransferase, activated partial thromboplastin time prolongation, and the incidence of fever were not significantly different between the two groups after therapy. In conclusion, enteral nutrition support elevated selected biochemical markers, but it did not substantially alter nutritional biomarkers and hematological and non-hematological complications. Background and Objectives: The modified Duke index derived from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) was designed to predict cardiovascular outcomes based on the severity of coronary stenosis. However, it does not take into consideration the presence or severity of peri-coronary inflammation. The peri-coronary fat attenuation index (FAI) is a novel imaging marker determined by CCTA which reflects the degree of inflammation in the coronary tree in patients with coronary artery disease. To assess the association between the modified Duke index assessed by CCTA, cardiovascular risk factors, and peri-coronary inflammation in the coronary arteries of patients with coronary artery disease. Materials and Methods: One hundred seventy-two patients who underwent CCTA for typical angina were assigned into two groups based on the modified Duke index: group 1—patients with low index, ≤3 (n = 107), and group 2—patients with high index, >3 (n = 65). Demographic, clinical, and CCTA data were collected for all patients, and FAI analysis of coronary inflammation was performed. Results: Patients with increased values of the modified Duke index were significantly older compared to those with a low index (61.83 ± 9.89 vs. 64.78 ± 8.9; p = 0.002). No differences were found between the two groups in terms of gender distribution, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, or smoking history (all p > 0.5). The FAI score was significantly higher in patients from group 2, who presented a significantly higher score of inflammation compared to the patients in group 1, especially at the level of the right coronary artery (FAI score, 20.85 ± 15.80 vs. 14.61 ± 16.66; p = 0.01 for the right coronary artery, 13.85 ± 8.04 vs. 10.91 ± 6.5; p = 0.01 for the circumflex artery, 13.26 ± 10.18 vs. 11.37 ± 8.84; p = 0.2 for the left anterior descending artery). CaRi-Heart® analysis identified a significantly higher risk of future events among patients with a high modified Duke index (34.84% ± 25.86% vs. 16.87% ± 15.80%; p < 0.0001). ROC analysis identified a cut-off value of 12.1% of the CaRi-Heart® risk score for predicting a high severity of coronary lesions, with an AUC of 0.69. Conclusions: The CT-derived modified Duke index correlates well with local perilesional inflammation as assessed using the FAI score at different levels of the coronary circulation. Purpose: To assess the efficacy of a supervised in-school combined resistance and aerobic training program in adolescent girls and investigate whether responses differ according to birthweight. Methods: Participants (girls aged 13–17 y) were randomized either to an intervention replacing physical education (PE) classes with 2 × 60-minute training sessions per week (n = 58) or to a control group that continued to attend 2 × 60 minutes per week of curriculum PE (n = 41). We measured muscular fitness (handgrip, standing long jump, and sit-ups), cardiorespiratory fitness (20-m shuttle run), skinfolds, and lean body mass preintervention and postintervention and determined effect size (Hedge's g) differences between changes in these measures. We also compared changes within lower (<3000 g) and normal birthweight intervention and PE control subgroups. Results: The intervention group showed greater improvements in all the fitness measures and lean body mass (g = 0.22–0.48) and lower skinfold increases (g = 0.41) than PE controls. Within the intervention group, improvements in all fitness measures were larger in lower birthweight (g = 0.53–0.94) than in normal birthweight girls (g = 0.02–0.39). Conclusion: Replacing curriculum PE with supervised training improved muscular and cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition outcomes in adolescent females. Purpose: To compare the safety of a standardized, commercially available intracameral combination of mydriatics and anesthetic (ICMA) with a reference topical mydriatic regimen for cataract surgery. Patients and Methods: The safety results from two international, randomized, controlled clinical studies were combined to compare ICMA at the beginning of cataract surgery (ICMA group) to the reference topical mydriatic regimen (reference group). Data were collected on ocular and systemic adverse events, corneal and anterior chamber examination, endothelial cell density, retinal thickness and visual acuity. Analysis was performed on a pooled safety set from both studies, preoperatively and up to 1 month postoperatively. Results: 342 patients received ICMA and 318 the reference topical regimen. Ocular adverse events were reported in 17.0% of patients in the ICMA group and 18.6% in the reference group. No difference was shown between groups in endothelial cell density (2208 ± 498 cells/mm2 for ICMA group versus 2241 ± 513 cells/mm2 for the reference group; p=0.547) and retinal thickness (change from baseline less than 50 μm in 94.7% versus 95.0% of patients, respectively) at 1 month postoperatively. At 1-day post-surgery, less patients in the ICMA group had moderate or severe (Grades 2 and 3) superficial punctate corneal staining (3.9% versus 7.0% for the reference group; p=0.064). Postoperatively, some ocular symptoms were also less frequently reported in the ICMA group. Best-corrected visual acuity increased in 96.0% of patients in the ICMA group and 95.8% in the reference group at 1 month. Conclusion: ICMA injection at the beginning of cataract surgery was demonstrated to be safe and may also provide perioperative and postoperative advantages over the standard topical mydriatic regimen. Summary: Obesity, especially central obesity is associated with increased risk of metabolic syndrome, non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study aimed to investigate the associations of the changes of abdominal fat thicknesses with changes of anthropometric indexes and improvements of metabolic phenotypes in patients with obesity and T2DM before and after bariatric surgery. Between April 2016 and January 2017, 34 adult patients with concurrent obesity and T2DM scheduled for different bariatric surgeries were prospectively evaluated by ultrasound before and 1‐year after bariatric surgery to determine abdominal fat thicknesses (mesenteric fat, preperitoneal fat and subcutaneous fat) and NAFLD. At 1 year, of the 25 patients that finished the study, significant decrease in mesenteric‐fat‐thickness was associated with significant reduction of obesity, that is, BMI (−24%, p <.001), remission of metabolic syndrome (32%, p =.008), NAFLD (60%, p <.001) and T2DM (44%, p <.001). Lower baseline mesenteric fat thickness was associated with remission of metabolic syndrome. Purpose: Excess weight in adolescents with cancer during treatment does affect cancer outcomes. Neck circumference (NC), an easygoing anthropometric measure, may present greater metabolic risk, and is associated with excess adiposity. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of elevated NC in adolescents with cancer and associated factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study with adolescents aged 10–19 years, under antineoplastic treatment, evaluated from 2015 to 2017, at a Pediatric Oncology Institute's outpatient clinic. Anthropometric parameters were collected, besides diagnosis, sex, and age. The classification of elevated NC was carried out considering cutoff values for adolescents, according to sex and age group. A binary logistic regression was used to determine relationships between NC and associated factors. Results: Among 496 eligible cases, most were male (n = 299, 60.3%). A total of 31.9% of cases had high NC. There is significant and moderate correlation between skinfold thickness (TS) and NC (ρ = 0.6; p = 0.000), and a significant but weak correlation between TS and body mass index (ρ = 0.267; p = 0.000). The adjusted analysis for sex, age group, and type of tumor showed that females are more likely to belong to the high NC category, to have excess adiposity. The age group between 10 and 12 years was the most associated with this outcome (2.795 [0.979–7.977]; p < 0.05). TS is also associated with high NC (1.114 [1.050–1.182]; p < 0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that there is high prevalence of elevated NC and higher risks for this outcome considering type of tumor, sex, age group, besides being an easy and simple measure for use in clinical practice. Background: Today, bariatric procedures are common. These surgeries' difficulties are classified as patient- or surgical team–related and are estimated by body mass index (BMI). More efficient methods are needed to help surgeons. This study evaluated the effect of measuring patients' subcutaneous fat tissue thickness (SFT) and umbilicus-xiphoid (DXU) to anticipate surgical difficulties. Material and Methods: This was a prospective retrospective data analysis study. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy patients seen between May and October 2022 were included in the analysis and divided into three groups, according to a surgeon's assessment. All patients' SFT, DXU, rectus muscle thickness, total fat tissue amount (TFT), and operational time were recorded prospectively and analyzed. Results: In all, 151 patients were included in the study; of these, 124 (82.1%) were women and 27 (17.9%) were men. Their mean BMI value was 41.1 ± 6.2. Based on expert's opinion, we classified three groups: easy (n = 123, 81.5%), intermediate (n = 22, 14.6%), or difficult (n = 6, 4%). When the easy group was compared to the intermediate/difficult groups, we found that intermediate/difficult groups' SFT values were statistically significantly higher than the easy group (p = 0.000). Also, the intermediate/difficult group's TFT value was statistically significantly higher than the easy group (p = 0.000). We found no statistically significant differences between groups' DXU and rectus muscle thickness. Conclusion: This is the first study to anticipate sleeve gastrectomy difficulty using SFT and TFT. This is an easy technique to apply and no additional costs. Anticipating difficulties based on these criteria can ensure necessary preparations are made and help avoid complications. The assessment of total energy expenditure (TEE) is imperative to ensure appropriate fuelling during competition and training, although the current lack of TEE research in para sport make the prescription of nutritional strategies challenging. This study aimed to assess TEE of an elite wheelchair tennis (WT) player during training and competition of the highest level. One male WT player (age 23.6 years; career high World No. 1; body mass 65.7 kg; VO2max, 45.3 ml.kg−1.min−1) participated. Prior to the assessment, VO2max and maximum heart rate, resting metabolic rate, 10 m sprint speed and upper body skinfold measurements were made. Doubly labelled water assessed TEE during a 19-day period which included the Wimbledon Championships (5 days-3 matches), training (8 days) and the British Open (BO) (6 days-7 matches). Throughout data collection, the participant continued their usual training and preparation. During Wimbledon, TEE was 3118 kcal·d−1: 60.3 kcal·kg−1 FFM: PAL 2.0 and during BO was 3368 kcal·day−1: 65.1 kcal·kg−1 FFM: PAL 2.2. Mean daily activity was 124 mins and 132 mins, respectively. During training, TEE was 3177kcal·day-1: 61.4kcal·kg-1 FFM: PAL 2.0: mean daily activity was 138 mins. These findings show the TEE of an elite WT player captured during a period of training and high-level competition, alongside data outlining the physiological profile of a world-class para-athlete. Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) can often be triggered by an inflammatory substrate. Perivascular inflammation may be assessed nowadays using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) imaging. The new pericoronary fat attenuation index (FAI HU) and the FAI Score have prognostic value for predicting future cardiovascular events. Our purpose was to investigate the correlation between pericoronary fat inflammation and the presence of AF among patients with coronary artery disease. Patients and methods: Eighty-one patients (mean age 64.75 ± 7.84 years) who underwent 128-slice CCTA were included in this study and divided into two groups: group 1 comprised thirty-six patients with documented AF and group 2 comprised forty-five patients without a known history of AF. Results: There were no significant differences in the absolute value of fat attenuation between the study groups (p > 0.05). However, the mean FAI Score was significantly higher in patients with AF (15.53 ± 10.29 vs. 11.09 ± 6.70, p < 0.05). Regional analysis of coronary inflammation indicated a higher level of this process, especially at the level of the left anterior descending artery (13.17 ± 7.91 in group 1 vs. 8.80 ± 4.75 in group 2, p = 0.008). Conclusions: Patients with AF present a higher level of perivascular inflammation, especially in the region of the left coronary circulation, and this seems to be associated with a higher risk of AF development. Background: Familial partial lipodystrophy (FPLD) is an inherited disorder of white adipose tissue that causes premature cardiometabolic disease. There is no clear diagnostic criteria for FPLD, and this may explain the under-detection of this condition. Aim: This pilot study aimed to describe the clinical features of women with FPLD and to explore the value of adipose tissue measurements that could be useful in diagnosis. Methods: In 8 women with FPLD and 4 controls, skinfold measurements, DXA and whole-body MRI were undertaken. Results: Whole genome sequencing was negative for monogenic metabolic causes, but polygenic scores for partial lipodystrophy were elevated in keeping with FPLD type 1. The mean age of diagnosis of DM was 31 years in the FPLD group. Compared with controls, the FPLD group had increased HOMA-IR (10.3 vs 2.9, p = 0.028) and lower mean thigh skinfold thickness (19.5 mm vs 48.2 mm, p = 0.008). The FPLD group had lower percentage of leg fat and an increased ratio of trunk to leg fat percentage on DXA. By MRI, the FPLD group had decreased subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) volume in the femoral and calf regions (p < 0.01); abdominal SAT, visceral adipose tissue, and femoral and calf muscle volumes were not different from controls. Conclusion: Women with FPLD1 in Singapore have significant loss of adipose but not muscle tissue in lower limbs and have early onset of diabetes. Background: Kisspeptin has been indicated to be a biomarker of fetal growth. Although some evidence suggested that maternal kisspeptin concentrations in early pregnancy were associated with increased fetal growth, studies are still limited and the effect of kisspeptin in late pregnancy remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the associations between maternal kisspeptin in late pregnancy and fetal growth. Methods: Based on the Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort study, 724 motherneonate pairs were included in this study. We measured maternal kisspeptin concentrations in the urine samples collected in late pregnancy and neonatal anthropometric indices at birth. The associations between maternal kisspeptin and neonatal anthropometry were investigated using multiple linear regression models. Results: Higher maternal urinary kisspeptin concentrations were associated with lower neonatal birth weight, head circumference, upper arm circumference, abdominal skinfold thickness, triceps skinfold thickness, and back skinfold thickness. The inverse associations were more pronounced for the highest kisspeptin levels versus the lowest. These patterns were consistent in analyses stratified by neonatal sex, with notably stable associations between maternal kisspeptin concentrations and skinfold thickness. Conclusion: The present study suggested that maternal kisspeptin concentrations in late pregnancy might be inversely associated with fetal growth. The physiological mechanisms of maternal kisspeptin might differ from those in early pregnancy. Introduction: Measurements of diaphragm function by ultrasonography are affected by body position, but reference values in the seated position have not been established for an Asian population. This study aimed to determine reference values for diaphragm thickness, thickening fraction, and dome excursion by ultrasonography and to investigate the effects of sex, height, and body mass index. Methods: Diaphragm ultrasonography was performed on 109 seated Japanese volunteers with normal respiratory function who were enrolled between March 2022 and January 2023. Thickness, thickening fraction, and excursion were measured. Reference values and the measurement success rate were calculated. Multivariate analysis adjusted for sex, height, and body mass index was performed. Results: The measurement success rate was better for thickness than for excursion. The mean (lower limit of normal) values on the right/left sides were as follows. During quiet breathing, thickness at end expiration(mm) was 1.7 (0.9)/1.6 (0.80), thickening fraction(%) was 50 (0.0)/52 (0.0), and excursion(cm) was 1.7 (0.5)/1.9 (0.5). During deep breathing, the thickening fraction was 111 (24)/107 (22), and the excursion was 4.4 (1.7)/4.1 (2.0). In multivariate analysis, body mass index was positively associated with thickness but not with the thickening fraction. Conclusion: The reference values in this study were smaller than those in previous reports from Europe. Considering that thickness is influenced by body mass index, using Western reference values in Asia, where the average body mass index is lower, might not be appropriate. Background: Soccer is a game in constant evolution and the intensity of play is increasing. Nutrition can play a role in the physical performance of elite players, maintaining their health and facilitating recovery. It is important to cover players' energy demands, and low energy availability may therefore result in impaired performance. This study aimed to evaluate alterations in body composition to determine the effects of a nutritional program led by a sport nutritionist. Methods: A group of 88 elite soccer players from a Serie A club in Italy (44 males aged 26.5 ± 3.0 years and 44 females aged 27.1 ± 5.2 years) were enrolled. To evaluate changes in body composition, bioimpedance and anthropometric measurements were obtained following the protocol of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK). Results: Compared with females, males had more muscle mass and less fat mass in both seasons evaluated. Comparing the first and last seasons, the male soccer players showed increased muscle mass and decreased fat mass while the female soccer players only showed decreased fat mass. Conclusions: The presence of a specialist sport nutritionist on the staff of professional soccer clubs could be important to ensure energy availability and evaluate body composition during the season. Introduction: Aesthetic radiofrequency treatment is a therapeutic method focused on reducing adiposity, of reducing body weight, concomitant with the use of aesthetic techniques using herbal medicines and medicinal plants. One of the plants still little explored by health professionals is Rosmarinus officinalis. Objective: To evaluate the impact of aesthetic radiofrequency treatment, combined with the use of standardized dry extract R. officinalis, on anthropometric variables in healthy women. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two healthy women were subjected to radiofrequency cosmetic treatment for 4 weeks. These women were divided into Control Group (CG) and Intervention Group (IG). In CG (n=8), placebo capsules were included in the diet. The intervention group was divided into: Group A (n=8) 100 mg day-1; Group B (n=8) 500 mg day-1; Group C (n=8): 1,000 mg day-1. Anthropometric data regarding abdominal skinfolds, abdominal circumferences, and bioimpedance were collected before and after the interventions. Results: The aesthetic treatment with radiofrequency did not change the parameters evaluated. Significant changes were observed for the use of R. officinalis, through the significant increase in skinfolds, for all doses evaluated, as well as reduction in abdominal circumference with the use of 500 mg. Conclusion: Aesthetic radiofrequency treatment did not result in significant changes in anthropometric variables. Oral supplementation with R. officinalis extract can increase abdominal skinfolds in a linear, dose-dependent way. In addition, oral supplementation can significantly change abdominal circumferences.
