Background: Chaetognaths are a clade of marine worm-like invertebrates with a heavily debated phylogenetic position. Their nervous system superficially resembles the protostome type, however, knowledge regarding the molecular processes involved in neurogenesis is lacking. To better understand these processes, we examined the expression profiles of marker genes involved in bilaterian neurogenesis during post-embryonic stages of Spadella cephaloptera. We also investigated whether the transcription factor encoding genes involved in neural patterning are regionally expressed in a staggered fashion along the mediolateral axis of the nerve cord as it has been previously demonstrated in selected vertebrate, insect, and annelid models. Methods: The expression patterns of genes involved in neural differentiation (elav), neural patterning (foxA, nkx2.2, pax6, pax3/7, and msx), and neuronal function (ChAT and VAChT) were examined in S. cephaloptera hatchlings and early juveniles using whole-mount fluorescent in situ hybridization and confocal microscopy. Results: The Sce-elav+ profile of S. cephaloptera hatchlings reveals that, within 24 h of post-embryonic development, the developing neural territories are not limited to the regions previously ascribed to the cerebral ganglion, the ventral nerve center (VNC), and the sensory organs, but also extend to previously unreported CNS domains that likely contribute to the ventral cephalic ganglia. In general, the neural patterning genes are expressed in distinct neural subpopulations of the cerebral ganglion and the VNC in hatchlings, eventually becoming broadly expressed with reduced intensity throughout the CNS in early juveniles. Neural patterning gene expression domains are also present outside the CNS, including the digestive tract and sensory organs. ChAT and VAChT domains within the CNS are predominantly observed in specific subpopulations of the VNC territory adjacent to the ventral longitudinal muscles in hatchlings. Conclusions: The observed spatial expression domains of bilaterian neural marker gene homologs in S. cephaloptera suggest evolutionarily conserved roles in neurogenesis for these genes among bilaterians. Patterning genes expressed in distinct regions of the VNC do not show a staggered medial-to-lateral expression profile directly superimposable to other bilaterian models. Only when the VNC is conceptually laterally unfolded from the longitudinal muscle into a flat structure, an expression pattern bearing resemblance to the proposed conserved bilaterian mediolateral regionalization becomes noticeable. Increased temperature and fragmentation of green spaces in urban areas could drive variations in functional traits of insects. Such morphological shifts may occur for sensory systems, which were previously reported to be prone to change with habitat characteristics in non-urban contexts. Here, we measured traits related to the visual and antennal sensory systems in the bees Halictus scabiosae and Osmia cornuta and the wasp Polistes dominula along an urbanisation gradient within Milan (Italy). We hypothesised that fragmentation could filter for better visual properties, and that higher temperature could filter for fewer thermoreceptors and more olfactory hairs. While controlling for body size, results show subtle but appreciable responses to urbanisation in one or more traits in all species, though not always supporting our hypotheses. O. cornuta shows marginally higher ommatidia density and smaller ommatidia diameter (associated with better visual resolution) in more fragmented sites, as well as marginally fewer thermoreceptors in hotter sites, in agreement with our two predictions. On the other hand, H. scabiosae has marginally smaller antennae and P. dominula has smaller eyes at warmer locations, and the wasp also has smaller antennae and 9th flagellomeres in more fragmented areas. Perhaps higher temperatures accelerate development of sensory system at higher speed than the rest of body in these two species. Our results represent the first evidence of urbanisation effects on the visual and antennal sensory systems of bees and wasps and underline how such effects may involve a much broader bouquet of traits then previously observed. The development of neuromorphic sensory systems necessitates synaptic devices with adaptivity to a wide range of stimuli. Furthermore, the introduction of multimodal adaptivity is highly favorable, which holds immense potential for improving the processing capability of the neuromorphic system under complex environments. In this work, we report a thermal-coupled adaptive synapse (TCAS) by integrating an IGZO-based synaptic transistor with a laser-induced graphene micro-heater. This synapse enables active modulation of nonlinear short-term plasticity gains through temperature and voltage co-mediated ion/electron coupling, which facilitates the high adaptivity for image denoising. The images with multilevel signals can be effectively denoised with an average reduction of ∼84.0% in the Euclidean distance in comparison with the noisy images. This outcome indicates the effectiveness of TCASs in complex sensory processing and offers a promising solution for the development of neuromorphic systems with multimodal adaptability. Notothenioid fishes, a perciform group, radiated in the cold shelf waters around the Antarctic continent and the 110 species dominate fish diversity, abundance, and biomass at levels of ≈77%, 92%, and 91%, respectively. This occurred in a locality with frequent glaciomarine cycles that fragmented and obliterated habitats, disrupted ecosystems, and made parts of the high latitude shelves periodically uninhabitable. The notothenioid radiation encompasses three stages and 10 axes: for the habitat stage, divergence in (1) depth and (2) biotope, meaning subdivisions within the pelagic and benthic realms; for the morphology stage, divergence in (3) body size, (4) body density based on proportions of skeletal and adipose tissues, (5) body shape, (6) trophic morphology, specifically head morphology related to feeding (jaws, teeth, head size, and pharyngeal gape), and (7) neuromorphology (brain and sensory systems); and for the communication stage, divergence in (8) fecundity and egg size, (9) sexual dichromatism and dimorphism in body and fins, and (10) parental care behavior associated with nesting. There was an antecedent Eocene fossil fauna that did not include notothenioids and that has minimal taxonomic representation in the modern fauna. Liparids (snailfishes) and zoarcids (eelpouts) also diversified in Antarctic waters but with minimal divergence. The general morphology of the body, including the distribution of putative sensory ciliary cells, was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the siboglinid Nereilinum murmanicum Ivanov, 1961 collected from the Barents Sea and at a new, deeper locality in the Greenland Sea outside the known range of this species. The fine features of cuticular structures in N. murmanicum, including the bridle and cuticular plaques from different parts of the body, were described for the first time. Since we have previously shown in the closely related siboglinid Oligobrachia haakonmosbiensis Smirnov, 2000 using SEM and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) that all epidermal cilia except for the ventral ciliary band belong to sensory cells, we consider all ciliary structures detected in N. murmanicum as sensory. The tentacles, clusters of ciliary cells along the dorsal furrow, areas around the openings of the multicellular glands, papillae, and the ciliary patch located on the cephalic lobe at the base of the tentacles can be regarded as specialized sensory areas. Based on our current knowledge of sensory structures in annelids, a number of assumptions were made about possible functional characteristics of putative sensory structures in siboglinids. One of the key problems the brain faces is inferring the state of the world from a sequence of dynamically changing stimuli, and it is not yet clear how the sensory system achieves this task. A well-established computational framework for describing perceptual processes in the brain is provided by the theory of predictive coding. Although the original proposals of predictive coding have discussed temporal prediction, later work developing this theory mostly focused on static stimuli, and key questions on neural implementation and computational properties of temporal predictive coding networks remain open. Here, we address these questions and present a formulation of the temporal predictive coding model that can be naturally implemented in recurrent networks, in which activity dynamics rely only on local inputs to the neurons, and learning only utilises local Hebbian plasticity. Additionally, we show that temporal predictive coding networks can approximate the performance of the Kalman filter in predicting behaviour of linear systems, and behave as a variant of a Kalman filter which does not track its own subjective posterior variance. Importantly, temporal predictive coding networks can achieve similar accuracy as the Kalman filter without performing complex mathematical operations, but just employing simple computations that can be implemented by biological networks. Moreover, when trained with natural dynamic inputs, we found that temporal predictive coding can produce Gabor-like, motion-sensitive receptive fields resembling those observed in real neurons in visual areas. In addition, we demonstrate how the model can be effectively generalized to nonlinear systems. Overall, models presented in this paper show how biologically plausible circuits can predict future stimuli and may guide research on understanding specific neural circuits in brain areas involved in temporal prediction. Author summary: While significant advances have been made in the neuroscience of how the brain processes static stimuli, the time dimension has often been relatively neglected. However, time is crucial since the stimuli perceived by our senses typically dynamically vary in time, and the cortex needs to make sense of these changing inputs. This model is able to infer and track the state of the environment based on noisy inputs, and predict future sensory stimuli. By ensuring that these predictions match the incoming stimuli, the model is able to learn the structure and statistics of its temporal inputs and produces responses of neurons resembling those in the brain. The Transpecies Society is an association of cyborg artists and activists "that gives voice to nonhuman identities; raises awareness of the challenges transpecies face; advocates for the freedom of self-design and offers the development of new senses and organs." This article explores how members of The Transpecies Society use sensory modification as a form of artistic expression and political activism. It asks, how do transpeciests seek to "stretch the bounds of experience" by developing new senses? Precisely what kind of experiences, and what kind of "sensory orders" are they interested in creating? By using technology to transform their own sensory capacities and connect more intimately with nature, how do transpeciests challenge anthropocentric views of society, and establish recognition and rights for those "who do not identify as 100% human"? I ultimately aim to demonstrate that for transpeciests, the creation of new senses is not just an attempt to refashion the individual body and push the boundaries of aesthetic experience. On the one hand, ionizing radiation has been used to treat not only cancer, but also non-cancer diseases. On the other hand, associations with radiation exposure have increasingly been reported not only for cancer, but also non-cancer diseases, both at doses or dose rates much lower than previously suggested or considered. This underscores the need for considering both cancer and non-cancer effects of medical (diagnostic or therapeutic), occupational or environmental exposure to radiation. As such, this Special Issue aims to serve as a forum to gather the latest developments and discuss future prospects in the field of normal tissue responses to radiation exposure. The unbalanced ratio of the environmental components adversely impacts the ecosystem because of dangerous gases at high levels. One of them, CO gas is the colourless, tasteless, and odourless gas that becomes difficult to identify by human sensory organs. Its accidental inhalation causes serious health problems. To overcome the dangerous and adverse effects of CO gas, the utilization of novel inorganic Al12As12 and Ga12As12 nanocages has not yet been thoroughly investigated. To fill this gap, a comparative investigation of the sensing capability of both nanocages is accomplished by employing first-principle DFT and TD-DFT computations. The calculated adsorption energy values manifest both nanocages' remarkable adsorption response. The explored molecular electronic properties: the energy gap (~ 2.21 eV), softness (~ 0.45 eV), hardness(~ 1.11 eV), electrophilicity index(~ 10.64 eV), electrical conductivity (~ 1.98 × 109), and recovery time (~ 1.63 × 10−12 s−1) values ascertain the comparatively high reactivity and sensing response of the Ga12As12 nanocage towards CO gas. NBO analysis explored the presence of more effective ICT network in Ga12As12 nanocage by showing the effective interactions towards CO gas. UV–Vis analysis and NCI analysis explored the comparative maximum absorbance wavelength (550.04 nm) along with minimum excitation energy (2.25 eV) and comparatively highest noncovalent interactions, respectively, by Ga12As12 nanocage complexes. The thermodynamic analysis explored the spontaneity of the interaction process for both the systems but comparatively highest values of ∆fH0 and ∆rG0 for Ga12As12 nanocage complexes that indicate the increased strength of the reaction mechanism. So, all the investigation parameters have proved the Ga12As12 nanocage and Al12As12 nanocage are helpful for environmental monitoring to detect CO gas, and the Ga12As12 nanocage is a promising influential sensing material and exhibits comparatively high sensitivity. The carotid body (CB), located bilaterally at the carotid artery bifurcations, is the primary sensory organ for monitoring arterial blood O2 levels. Carotid bodies are immature at birth, exhibiting low sensitivity to hypoxia, and become more sensitive with maturation during the first few weeks of neonatal life. To understand the molecular basis for the postnatal developmental hypoxic responses of CB, we isolated CBs from 5-day and 21-day-old Sprague–Dawley rats and performed RNA sequencing, which allows comprehensive analysis of gene expression. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were generated using Edge R, while functional enrichment analysis was performed using gene-set enrichment analysis (GSEA). Analysis of RNA-Seq data showed 2604 DEGs of the total 12,696 genes shared between neonates and adults. Of the 2604 DEGs, 924 genes were upregulated, and 1680 genes were downregulated. Further analysis showed that genes related to oxidative phosphorylation (Ox/phos) and hypoxia-signaling pathways were significantly upregulated in neonatal CBs compared to adult CBs, suggesting a possible link to differential developmental hypoxic responses seen in CB. Genes related to cytokine signaling (INFγ and TNFα) and transcription factors (CREB and NFΚB) mediated pathways were enriched in adult CBs, suggesting that expression of these pathways may be linked to developmental regulation. The RNA-Seq results were verified by analyzing mRNA changes in selected genes by qRT-PCR. Chlamyphorus truncatus is the smallest known armadillo, weighing about 100 grams and measuring less than 15 cm from head to tail. It is endemic to central Argentina and the species is named after its unique carapace. This armadillo has almost completely subterranean habits and, unlike all other subterranean mammals, C. truncatus has a carapace composed of osteoderms and cornified scales. Furthermore, the skin and carapace show unique characteristics compared even with other armadillos. Owing to the reduced development of its eyes, it is important to analyse the skin morphology of this species, as well as specialized sensory organs like vibrissae. The aim of this contribution is to describe the histomorphology of the integumentary system of C. truncatus. For this, histological sections of the skin with and without osteoderms were made, and routine histological and immunohistochemical techniques were performed. Furthermore, microCTs were performed on osteoderms to describe their micromorphology. Our results show that the integumentary system presents unique characteristics compared to other armadillos, such as the peculiar skin under the dorsal shield and the flexibility of almost all of its carapace. Furthermore, the modification of the arrangement of hairs in the first pelvic buckler osteoderms may suggest biomechanical adaptations, such as an improvement in the displacement through the tunnels of sandy soils. The skin without osteoderms presents convergent characteristics with that of other subterranean mammals. Furthermore, the vibrissae conserve the structure of the armadillos (the cavernous sinuses extend throughout the follicle‐sinus complex) with a thinning and shortening of the hairs, which are probably linked to passive monitoring of the surrounding environment. Flexible electronics is a cutting-edge field that has paved the way for artificial tactile systems that mimic biological functions of sensing mechanical stimuli. These systems have an immense potential to enhance human–machine interactions (HMIs). However, tactile sensing still faces formidable challenges in delivering precise and nuanced feedback, such as achieving a high sensitivity to emulate human touch, coping with environmental variability, and devising algorithms that can effectively interpret tactile data for meaningful interactions in diverse contexts. In this review, we summarize the recent advances of tactile sensory systems, such as piezoresistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, and triboelectric tactile sensors. We also review the state-of-the-art fabrication techniques for artificial tactile sensors. Next, we focus on the potential applications of HMIs, such as intelligent robotics, wearable devices, prosthetics, and medical healthcare. Specific subpopulations of neurons in nerve and sensory systems must be developed and maintained, and this is accomplished in significant part by neurotrophins (NTs) and the signaling receptors on which they act, called tyrosine protein kinase receptors (Trks). The neurotrophins–tyrosine protein kinase receptors (NTs/Trks) system is involved in sensory organ regulation, including the visual system. An NTs/Trks system alteration is associated with neurodegeneration related to aging and diseases, including retinal pathologies. An emergent model in the field of translational medicine, for instance, in aging study, is the annual killifish belonging to the Nothobranchius genus, thanks to its short lifespan. Members of this genus, such as Nothobranchius guentheri, and humans share a similar retinal stratigraphy. Nevertheless, according to the authors' knowledge, the occurrence and distribution of the NTs/Trks system in the retina of N. guentheri has never been investigated before. Therefore, the present study aimed to localize neurotrophin BDNF, NGF, and NT-3 and TrkA, TrkB, and TrkC receptors in the N. guentheri retina using the immunofluorescence method. The present investigation demonstrates, for the first time, the occurrence of the NTs/Trks system in N. guentheri retina and, consequently, the potential key role of these proteins in the biology and survival of the retinal cells. In this article, I will argue that various scholars of kalām unanimously agree that sense-perception is something beyond the physical processes in the sense organs. There may be something happening in our eyes when we see a red apple, but seeing a red apple is not tantamount to it. We will see that some scholars of kalām argue that sense-perception is akin to being aware or conscious of the object of perception, and, hence, distinct from the physical process in the sense organs. One group will go so far as to accept that sense-perception is not even dependent on any physical processes in the body. Another group will accept that sense-perception presupposes that various physical conditions obtain, yet still regard sense-perception as something distinct from the occurrence of those conditions. I am suggesting that these nonreductive theories of sense-perception are the reason why Arabic-Islamic philosophers, starting from the eleventh century CE, consistently reject the Aristotelian-Avicennian theory of sense-perception. Objective. Juvenile-onset fibromyalgia (JFM) is a paradigmatic chronic pain condition for which the underlying neurobiological substrates are poorly understood. This study examined, for the first time, data-driven resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) alterations in 37 female adolescents with JFM compared with 43 healthy female adolescents and identified associations with bodily pain. Methods. Whole-brain voxel-wise rsFC alterations were assessed using the intrinsic connectivity contrast, a measure of node centrality at each voxel, and seed-based analyses for interpretability. We studied the relationship between rsFC alterations in somatosensory systems and the location and extension of bodily pain. Results. Adolescents with JFM had voxel-wise rsFC reductions in the paracentral lobule (PCL)/primary somatosensory cortex (S1) (T = 4.89, family-wise error corrected p-value (pFWE) < 0.001) and left midcingulate cortex (T = 4.67, pFWE = 0.043). Post hoc analyses revealed reduced rsFC spanning major cortical sensory hubs (T > 4.4, pFWE < 0.030). Cortico-cortical rsFC reductions within PCL/S1 in JFM occurred in locations innervated by bodily areas where the pain was most frequent (F = 3.15; positive false discovery rate = 0.029) and predicted widespread pain (T > 4.4, pFWE < 0.045). Conversely, adolescents with JFM had increases in PCL/S1–thalamus (T = 4.75, pFWE = 0.046) and PCL/S1–anterior insula rsFC (T = 5.13, pFWE = 0.039). Conclusion. Reduced cortico-cortical sensory integration involving PCL/S1 and spanning the sensory systems may underly critical pain sensory features in youth with JFM. Reduced sensory integration is paralleled by augmented cross-talk between sensory and affective/salience-processing regions, potentially indicating a shift toward more affectively colored sensory experiences to the detriment of specific sensory discrimination. Peripheral nerve injury denervates muscle, resulting in muscle paralysis and atrophy. This is reversible if timely muscle reinnervation occurs. With delayed reinnervation, the muscle's reparative ability declines, and muscle-resident fibro-adipogenic progenitor cells (FAPs) proliferate and differentiate, inducing fibro-fatty muscle degradation and thereby physical disability. The mechanisms by which the peripheral nerve regulates FAPs expansion and differentiation are incompletely understood. Using the rat tibial neve transection model, we demonstrated an increased FAPs content and a changing FAPs phenotype, with an increased capacity for adipocyte and fibroblast differentiation, in gastrocnemius muscle post-denervation. The FAPs response was inhibited by immediate tibial nerve repair with muscle reinnervation via neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) and sensory organs (e.g., muscle spindles) or the sensory protection of muscle (where a pure sensory nerve is sutured to the distal tibial nerve stump) with reinnervation by muscle spindles alone. We found that both procedures reduced denervation-mediated increases in glial-cell-line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in muscle and that GDNF promoted FAPs adipogenic and fibrogenic differentiation in vitro. These results suggest that the peripheral nerve controls FAPs recruitment and differentiation via the modulation of muscle GDNF expression through NMJs and muscle spindles. Cranial placodes are transient ectodermal thickenings that contribute to a diverse array of organs in the vertebrate head. They develop from a common territory, the pre-placodal region that over time segregates along the antero-posterior axis into individual placodal domains: the adenohypophyseal, olfactory, lens, trigeminal, otic, and epibranchial placodes. These placodes terminally differentiate into the anterior pituitary, the lens, and contribute to sensory organs including the olfactory epithelium, and inner ear, as well as several cranial ganglia. To study cranial placodes and their derivatives and generate cells for therapeutic purposes, several groups have turned to in vitro derivation of placodal cells from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) or induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). In this review, we summarize the signaling cues and mechanisms involved in cranial placode induction, specification, and differentiation in vivo , and discuss how this knowledge has informed protocols to derive cranial placodes in vitro. We also discuss the benefits and limitations of these protocols, and the potential of in vitro cranial placode modeling in regenerative medicine to treat cranial placode-related pathologies. Synaptic transmission plays an important and time-sensitive role in the nervous system. Although the amplitude of neurotransmission is positively related to the intensity of external stimulus, whether stronger stimulus could trigger synaptic transmission faster remains unsolved. Our present work in the primary sensory system shows that besides the known effect of larger amplitude, stronger stimulus triggers the synaptic transmission faster, which is regulated by the earlier started action potential (AP), independent of the AP's amplitude. More importantly, this model is further extended from the sensory system to the hippocampus, implying broad applicability in the nervous system. Together, we found that stronger stimulus induces AP faster, which suggests to trigger the neurotransmission faster, implying that the occurrence time of neurotransmission, as well as the amplitude, plays an important role in the timely and effective response of nervous system. Neurons throughout the brain modulate their firing rate lawfully in response to sensory input. Theories of neural computation posit that these modulations reflect the outcome of a constrained optimization in which neurons aim to robustly and efficiently represent sensory information. Our understanding of how this optimization varies across different areas in the brain, however, is still in its infancy. Here, we show that neural sensory responses transform along the dorsal stream of the visual system in a manner consistent with a transition from optimizing for information preservation towards optimizing for perceptual discrimination. Focusing on the representation of binocular disparities—the slight differences in the retinal images of the two eyes—we re-analyze measurements characterizing neuronal tuning curves in brain areas V1, V2, and MT (middle temporal) in the macaque monkey. We compare these to measurements of the statistics of binocular disparity typically encountered during natural behaviors using a Fisher Information framework. The differences in tuning curve characteristics across areas are consistent with a shift in optimization goals: V1 and V2 population-level responses are more consistent with maximizing the information encoded about naturally occurring binocular disparities, while MT responses shift towards maximizing the ability to support disparity discrimination. We find that a change towards tuning curves preferring larger disparities is a key driver of this shift. These results provide new insight into previously-identified differences between disparity-selective areas of cortex and suggest these differences play an important role in supporting visually-guided behavior. Our findings emphasize the need to consider not just information preservation and neural resources, but also relevance to behavior, when assessing the optimality of neural codes. In this report, we re-examine classically-defined brain areas in the visual processing hierarchy, and ask whether neurons in these areas vary lawfully in how they represent sensory information. Our results suggest that neurons in these brain areas shift from being an optimal conduit for conveying sensory information towards prioritizing information that supports key perceptual discriminations during natural tasks. With the development of information processing, various neuromorphic synaptic devices have been proposed, including novel devices mimicking multiple sensory systems in the biosome, in which vision is a vital source of information. Due to the pressing issue of high energy consumption and the ever‐increasing complexity of practical application scenarios, there is an urgent need to investigate optoelectronic synapses with simple structure but multifunctional capabilities, thereby broadening their application scope. Here, remarkable performances in both electrical and optical operation modes are achieved in multilayer graphene/CuInP2S6/Au electronic/optoelectronic device. By modulating the electrical and optical pulses, both short‐term and long‐term memory can be emulated in the same device, while visual perception, processing, and memorizing functions are demonstrated in this single cell with relatively low energy consumption. In addition, light adaptive behavior can also be simulated through optical–electrical cooperative modulation in the device, further providing a novel and promising strategy for future applications in artificial visual systems. Many organisms communicate using signals in different sensory modalities (multicomponent or multimodal). When one signal or component is lost over evolutionary time, it may be indicative of changes in other characteristics of the signalling system, including the sensory organs used to perceive and process signals. Sceloporus lizards predominantly use chemical and visual signals to communicate, yet some species have lost the ancestral ventral colour patch used in male–male agonistic interactions and exhibit increased chemosensory behaviour. Here, we asked whether evolutionary loss of this sexual signal is associated with larger vomeronasal organ (VNO) volumes (an organ that detects chemical scents) compared with species that have retained the colour patch. We measured VNO coronal section areas of 7–8 adult males from each of 11 Sceloporus species (4 that lost and 7 that retained the colour patch), estimated sensory and total epithelium volume, and compared volumes using phylogenetic analysis of covariance, controlling for body size. Contrary to expectations, we found that species retaining the ventral patch had similar relative VNO volumes as did species that had lost the ancestral patch, and that body size explains VNO epithelium volume. Visual signal loss may be sufficiently compensated for by increased chemosensory behaviour, and the allometric pattern may indicate sensory system trade-offs for large-bodied species. BACKGROUND: The skin, being the greatest sensory organ of the body, serves as a defensive shield against a wide range of harmful environmental substances. Consequently, it is implicated in a broad range of illnesses, including both inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. A skin biopsy, together with histological analysis, is necessary to achieve a precise diagnosis, thus aiding clinicians in determining the most suitable treatment. AIMS: This study aims to provide a comprehensive description of the histopathological range of all skin lesions, establish their distribution by age and sex, and identify the most prevalent skin lesions in a tertiary care hospital. MATERIALS & METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional, non-interventional study was carried out on 255 skin biopsies received in the department of pathology at Government Medical College, Ananthapuram, Andhra Pradesh, for a period of four years, from January 2019 to June 2023. RESULTS: Among the 255 skin biopsies analysed, the demographic most significantly impacted were those aged 31 to 70 years, with a male preponderance in all the categories of skin lesions. 63 (24.7%) were non-neoplastic, and 192 (75.3%) were neoplastic. Among the neoplastic cases, 84.9% were classified as benign. CONCLUSION: Dermatological lesions exhibit a wide spectrum of clinical presentations, with a wide age distribution and histopathology. The significance of specific histomorphological characteristics lies in differentiating various skin lesions and is crucial in establishing the definitive diagnosis of these heterogeneous skin lesions. An animal with a large body can have larger sense organs than a smaller one, collecting more sensory information. However, many structures scale with body size to be relatively smaller in larger animals. This occurs with eyes, however the situation for mechanosensory organs is less clear. I investigated scaling of particular mechanosensory organs unique to dipteran flies, halteres, which replace hind wings and are important for the aerobatic ability underlying the success and diversity of dipterans. Halteres are shaped like drumsticks and beat up and down in time with the wings, acting as gyroscopes because yawing, pitching or rolling generate twisting forces in them. These forces are detected by campaniform sensilla (CS), dome‐shaped sensory cells in the cuticle that are mainly clustered into three fields. Unusually for a sense organ, individual CS are visible on the cuticle surface. I compared how haltere size, shape and CS number scale with body size in four clades representing different branches of dipteran phylogeny: tipulids (craneflies); tabanids (horseflies); syrphids (hoverflies) and calyptrates (e.g. houseflies, blowflies). In all clades, haltere length scaled with body mass raised to the power 0.23, similar to that for eyes of insects and other animals. It was directly proportional to wing length, probably enabling halteres to beat in time with wings. In relation to body size or wing length, tipulids had longer halteres than other clades. In contrast to haltere length, the number of CS was not related to body size within each clade but did vary between clades, suggesting a basic pattern for each clade was laid down early in its evolution. Tipulids had the smallest number, associated with relatively ponderous flight. Tabanids had more CS than calyptrates or syrphids, reasons for which require further investigation. Multicellular rosettes are transient epithelial structures that serve as important cellular intermediates in the formation of diverse organs. Using the zebrafish posterior lateral line primordium (pLLP) as a model system, we investigated the role of the RhoA GEF Mcf2lb in rosette morphogenesis. The pLLP is a group of ~150 cells that migrates along the zebrafish trunk and is organized into epithelial rosettes; these are deposited along the trunk and will differentiate into sensory organs called neuromasts (NMs). Using single-cell RNAsequencing and whole-mount in situ hybridization, we showed that mcf2lb is expressed in the pLLP during migration. Live imaging and subsequent 3D analysis of mcf2lb mutant pLLP cells showed disrupted apical constriction and subsequent rosette organization. This resulted in an excess number of depositedNMs along the trunk of the zebrafish. Cell polarity markers ZO-1 and Par-3 were apically localized, indicating that pLLP cells are properly polarized. In contrast, RhoA activity, as well as signaling components downstream of RhoA, Rock2a and non-muscle Myosin II, were diminished apically. Simple Summary: Cetaceans, which include dolphins, porpoises, and whales, show astounding and distinctly specialised adaptations of their senses that allow them to thrive in the aquatic environment. They possess the abilities to echolocate, are likely to discern bioelectric fields, sense water currents, and perform various other sensory tasks, amidst shifting and challenging environmental circumstances. For many of their senses, we still lack a basic understanding of their underlying physiology. In this review, we provide a summary of the neuroanatomical knowledge of cetacean sensory systems to date. We describe the peripheral sensory cells in organs like the eye, ear, and skin, and trace the nervous pathways up to the brain where the signals are processed in dedicated areas. We highlight recent advances and knowledge gaps that exist at the various anatomical levels, accentuating the pressing need for further research to bridge these knowledge gaps. Cetaceans have undergone profound sensory adaptations in response to their aquatic environment during evolution. These adaptations are characterised by anatomo-functional changes in the classically defined sensory systems, shaping their neuroanatomy accordingly. This review offers a concise and up-to-date overview of our current understanding of the neuroanatomy associated with cetacean sensory systems. It encompasses a wide spectrum, ranging from the peripheral sensory cells responsible for detecting environmental cues, to the intricate structures within the central nervous system that process and interpret sensory information. Despite considerable progress in this field, numerous knowledge gaps persist, impeding a comprehensive and integrated understanding of their sensory adaptations, and through them, of their sensory perspective. By synthesising recent advances in neuroanatomical research, this review aims to shed light on the intricate sensory alterations that differentiate cetaceans from other mammals and allow them to thrive in the marine environment. Furthermore, it highlights pertinent knowledge gaps and invites future investigations to deepen our understanding of the complex processes in cetacean sensory ecology and anatomy, physiology and pathology in the scope of conservation biology. Dysrhythmia is a term referring to the occurrence of spontaneous and repetitive changes in potentials with parameters deviating from those considered normal. The term refers to heart anomalies but has a broader meaning. Dysrhythmias may concern the heart, neurological system, digestive system, and sensory organs. Ion currents conducted through ion channels are a universal phenomenon. The occurrence of channel abnormalities will therefore result in disorders with clinical manifestations depending on the affected tissue, but phenomena from other tissues and organs may also manifest themselves. A similar problem concerns the implementation of pharmacotherapy, the mechanism of which is related to the impact on various ion currents. Treatment in this case may cause unfavorable effects on other tissues and organs. Drugs acting through the modulation of ion currents are characterized by relatively low tissue specificity. To assess a therapy's efficacy and safety, the risk of occurrences in other tissues with similar mechanisms of action must be considered. In the present review, the focus is shifted prominently onto a comparison of abnormal electrical activity within different tissues and organs. This review includes an overview of the types of dysrhythmias and the basic techniques of clinical examination of electrophysiological disorders. It also presents a concise overview of the available pharmacotherapy in particular diseases. Computational models can be critical to linking complex properties of muscle spindle organs to the sensory information that they encode during behaviours such as postural sway and locomotion where few muscle spindle recordings exist. Here, we augment a biophysical muscle spindle model to predict the muscle spindle sensory signal. Muscle spindles comprise several intrafusal muscle fibres with varied myosin expression and are innervated by sensory neurons that fire during muscle stretch. We demonstrate how cross‐bridge dynamics from thick and thin filament interactions affect the sensory receptor potential at the spike initiating region. Equivalent to the Ia afferent's instantaneous firing rate, the receptor potential is modelled as a linear sum of the force and rate change of force (yank) of a dynamic bag1 fibre and the force of a static bag2/chain fibre. We show the importance of inter‐filament interactions in (i) generating large changes in force at stretch onset that drive initial bursts and (ii) faster recovery of bag fibre force and receptor potential following a shortening. We show how myosin attachment and detachment rates qualitatively alter the receptor potential. Finally, we show the effect of faster recovery of receptor potential on cyclic stretch–shorten cycles. Specifically, the model predicts history‐dependence in muscle spindle receptor potentials as a function of inter‐stretch interval (ISI), pre‐stretch amplitude and the amplitude of sinusoidal stretches. This model provides a computational platform for predicting muscle spindle response in behaviourally relevant stretches and can link myosin expression seen in healthy and diseased intrafusal muscle fibres to muscle spindle function. Proprioception is the sense that lets us perceive the location, movement and action of the body parts. The proprioceptive apparatus includes specialized sense organs (proprioceptors) which are embedded in the skeletal muscles. The eyeballs are moved by six pairs of eye muscles and binocular vision depends on fine‐tuned coordination of the optical axes of both eyes. Although experimental studies indicate that the brain has access to eye position information, both classical proprioceptors (muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organ) are absent in the extraocular muscles of most mammalian species. This paradox of monitoring extraocular muscle activity in the absence of typical proprioceptors seemed to be resolved when a particular nerve specialization (the palisade ending) was detected in the extraocular muscles of mammals. In fact, for decades there was consensus that palisade endings were sensory structures that provide eye position information. The sensory function was called into question when recent studies revealed the molecular phenotype and the origin of palisade endings. Today we are faced with the fact that palisade endings exhibit sensory as well as motor features. Background: Appendicularia consists of approximately 70 purely marine species that belong to Tunicata the probable sister taxon to Craniota. Therefore, Appendicularia plays a pivotal role for our understanding of chordate evolution. In addition, appendicularians are an important part of the epipelagic marine plankton. Nevertheless, little is known about appendicularian species, especially from deeper water. Results: Using µCT, scanning electron microscopy, and digital 3D-reconstruction techniques we describe three pairs of complex oral sensory organs in the mesopelagic appendicularian Bathochordaeus stygius. The oral sensory organs are situated at the anterior and lateral margin of the mouth and inside the mouth cavity. A single organ consists of 22–90 secondary receptor cells that project apical cilia through a narrow hole in the epidermis. The receptor cells are innervated by branches of the second brain nerve. Conclusions: Based on position, morphology, and innervation we suggest that the oral sensory organs are homologues of the coronal organs in other tunicates. We discuss the hypothesized homology of coronal organs and the lateral line system of primary aquatic vertebrates. Models that predict brain responses to stimuli provide one measure of understanding of a sensory system and have many potential applications in science and engineering. Deep artificial neural networks have emerged as the leading such predictive models of the visual system but are less explored in audition. Prior work provided examples of audio-trained neural networks that produced good predictions of auditory cortical fMRI responses and exhibited correspondence between model stages and brain regions, but left it unclear whether these results generalize to other neural network models and, thus, how to further improve models in this domain. We evaluated model-brain correspondence for publicly available audio neural network models along with in-house models trained on 4 different tasks. Most tested models outpredicted standard spectromporal filter-bank models of auditory cortex and exhibited systematic model-brain correspondence: Middle stages best predicted primary auditory cortex, while deep stages best predicted non-primary cortex. However, some state-of-the-art models produced substantially worse brain predictions. Models trained to recognize speech in background noise produced better brain predictions than models trained to recognize speech in quiet, potentially because hearing in noise imposes constraints on biological auditory representations. The training task influenced the prediction quality for specific cortical tuning properties, with best overall predictions resulting from models trained on multiple tasks. The results generally support the promise of deep neural networks as models of audition, though they also indicate that current models do not explain auditory cortical responses in their entirety. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the extent to which contemporary neural network models can account for auditory cortex responses; most, but not all, trained neural network models provide improved matches to auditory cortex responses compared to a classic baseline model of the auditory cortex, and exhibit correspondence with the organization of the auditory cortex. The Scn7A gene encodes NaX, an atypical noninactivating Na+ channel, whose expression in sensory circumventricular organs is essential to maintain homeostatic responses for body fluid balance. However, NaX has also been detected in homeostatic effector neurons, such as vasopressin (VP)-releasing magnocellular neurosecretory cells (MNCVP) that secrete VP (antidiuretic hormone) into the bloodstream in response to hypertonicity and hypernatremia. Yet, the physiological relevance of NaX expression in these effector cells remains unclear. Here, we show that rat MNCVP in males and females is depolarized and excited in proportion with isosmotic increases in [Na+]. These responses were caused by an inward current resulting from a cell-autonomous increase in Na+ conductance. The Na+-evoked current was unaffected by blockers of other Na+-permeable ion channels but was significantly reduced by shRNA-mediated knockdown of Scn7A expression. Furthermore, reducing the density of NaX channels selectively impaired the activation of MNCVP by systemic hypernatremia without affecting their responsiveness to hypertonicity in vivo. These results identify NaX as a physiological Na+ sensor, whose expression in MNCVP contributes to the generation of homeostatic responses to hypernatremia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pain is described as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with actual or potential tissue damage.” Neuropathic Pain (NP), a common condition, is characterised by subjective negative and positive sensations that range from numbness to debilitating agony. The prevalence of chronic pain and nerve pain in young individuals is estimated to be around 30%-50% and 6%-11%, respectively. The exact cause of NP is unknown, but research suggests that factors such as allodynia, external sensitisation, neuronal swelling, free radical damage, activation of microglia, and physiological state play a significant role in its development and progression. While there have been recent suggestions for medications, neurostimulation techniques, and interventional management, comprehensive guidelines covering all these treatments are yet to be released. Both peripheral and Central Nervous System (CNS) mechanisms contribute to the persistence of most NP types. The initial approach to treating NP in young individuals often involves pharmacotherapy. The types of drugs prescribed for general and specific types of NP in young individuals, including antidepressants and anticonvulsants, align with guidelines and consensus statements from various organisations worldwide. However, many individuals may not experience complete relief from their pain despite using these first-line treatments. Neuralgia, affecting 7 to 10% of the general population, is caused by dysfunction in the sensory organs of the body, which comprise A, A, and C fibers, as well as the brainstem and spinal cord. Although the neural control of behavior has been extensively studied in gastropods, basic gaps remain in our understanding of how sensory stimuli are processed. In particular, there is only patchy evidence regarding the functional roles of sense organs and the extensive peripheral nervous system they contain. Our goal was to use extracellular electrophysiological recordings to confirm the chemosensory role of the tentacles in the great pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis. Employing a special twin‐channel suction electrode to improve signal‐to‐noise ratio, we applied three food odors (derived from earthworm‐based food pellets, algae‐based pellets, and fresh lettuce) to a reduced preparation of the tentacle while recording neuronal activity in the tentacle nerve. Responses were assessed by comparing average spike frequencies produced in response to saline flow with and without odors. We report stronger neuronal responses to earthworm‐based food odors and weaker responses to algae‐based food odors. There were no clear neuronal responses produced when lettuce food odor or control saline was applied to the tentacle. Overall, our results provide strong evidence for the chemosensory role of the tentacles in navigation behavior by L. stagnalis. Although it is unclear whether the differences in neuronal responses to different odors are a technical consequence of our recording system or a genuine feature of the snail sensory system, these results are a useful foundation for further study of peripheral nervous system function in gastropods. Why do the eyes remain comparatively large, whereas the cornea is reduced in most troglobiont mysids? Are there any important organ size-dependent functions served by non-visual eye rudiments? This issue was approached by measuring eye structures in five troglobiont species of Mysida and two Stygiomysida compared with 14 troglophiles and 49 trogloxene Mysida species. The Organ of Bellonci (OB) was found in all Mysida and, as first records, also in Stygiomysida. The length of OBs increased with individual body length (BL) and eye length (EL) in four examined species: from postnauplioid larvae to adult stage in a troglophile and a trogloxene mysid species examined; and from juveniles to adults in a troglobiont mysid and a troglobiont stygiomysid. At the interspecific level, EL was, on average, 26% shorter at a given BL, while the OB was 40% longer at a given BL and 54% longer at a given EL, respectively, in adult troglobionts compared with trogloxene mysids. The OB is clearly proliferating, while the cornea is reduced in troglobionts. This points to sensory functions (possibly together with other functions). The sensory pore organ was found in all 15 Mysida species whose eyes were mounted on slides, and the first record of this organ was also found in Stygiomysida. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The eye is a complex sensory organ that enables visual perception of the world. The dysfunction of any of these tissues can impair vision. Conduction studies on laboratory animals are essential to ensure the safety of therapeutic products directly applied or injected into the eye to treat ocular diseases before eventually proceeding to clinical trials. Among these tissues, the cornea has unique homeostatic and regenerative mechanisms for maintaining transparency and refraction of external light, which are essential for vision. However, being the outermost tissue of the eye and directly exposed to the external environment, the cornea is particularly susceptible to injury and diseases. This review highlights the evidence for selecting appropriate animals to better understand and treat corneal diseases, which rank as the fifth leading cause of blindness worldwide. The development of reliable and human-relevant animal models is, therefore, a valuable research tool for understanding and translating fundamental mechanistic findings, as well as for assessing therapeutic potential in humans. First, this review emphasizes the unique characteristics of animal models used in ocular research. Subsequently, it discusses current animal models associated with human corneal pathologies, their utility in understanding ocular disease mechanisms, and their role as translational models for patients. Phylum Tardigrada is represented by microscopic eight-legged panarthropods that inhabit terrestrial and marine environments. Although tardigrades are emerging model animals for areas of research including physiology, evolutionary biology, and astrobiology, knowledge of their external morphology remains insufficient. For instance, homologies between marine and terrestrial relatives largely remain unexplored. In the present study we provide detailed pictures of the head sensory organs in a new tardigrade, Ramazzottius groenlandensis sp. nov. Specimens were collected from a mixed moss and lichen sample on Ella Island, East Greenland. The new species differs from congeneric species in the presence of polygonal sculpturing on the dorsal cuticle, which is accentuated in the posterior region of the body, a lateral papilla on leg IV, and distinctive egg morphology. A Bayesian phylogenetic analysis (18S rRNA + 28S rRNA + COI) places the new species within the genus Ramazzottius with high confidence. Interestingly, the new species shows a full set of well-developed cephalic organs, which correspond to all sensory fields found in eutardigrades. Details on the full set of head organs were present only for heterotardigrades. The surface of these organs is covered with small pores, which presumably play a sensory role. This discovery suggests the homology of head sensory structures between heterotardigrades and eutardigrades, implying that the distinctive arrangement and positioning of sensory organs on the head is a plesiomorphic feature of tardigrades. Background: Unlike most free-living platyhelminths, catenulids, the sister group to all remaining flatworms, do not have eyes. Instead, the most prominent sensory structures in their heads are statocysts or sensory pits. The latter, found in the family Stenostomidae, are concave depressions located laterally on the head that represent one of the taxonomically important traits of the family. In the past, the sensory pits of flatworms have been homologized with the cephalic organs of nemerteans, a clade that occupies a sister position to platyhelminths in some recent phylogenies. To test for this homology, we studied morphology and gene expression in the sensory pits of the catenulid Stenostomum brevipharyngium. Results: We used confocal and electron microscopy to investigate the detailed morphology of the sensory pits, as well as their formation during regeneration and asexual reproduction. The most prevalent cell type within the organ is epidermally-derived neuron-like cells that have cell bodies embedded deeply in the brain lobes and long neurite-like processes extending to the bottom of the pit. Those elongated processes are adorned with extensive microvillar projections that fill up the cavity of the pit, but cilia are not associated with the sensory pit. We also studied the expression patterns of some of the transcription factors expressed in the nemertean cephalic organs during the development of the pits. Only a single gene, pax4/6, is expressed in both the cerebral organs of nemerteans and sensory pits of S. brevipharyngium, challenging the idea of their deep homology. Conclusions: Since there is no morphological or molecular correspondence between the sensory pits of Stenostomum and the cerebral organs of nemerteans, we reject their homology. Interestingly, the major cell type contributing to the sensory pits of stenostomids shows ultrastructural similarities to the rhabdomeric photoreceptors of other flatworms and expresses ortholog of the gene pax4/6, the pan-bilaterian master regulator of eye development. We suggest that the sensory pits of stenostomids might have evolved from the ancestral rhabdomeric photoreceptors that lost their photosensitivity and evolved secondary function. It has previously been shown that the zinc-finger transcription factor Gata3 has dynamic expression within the inner ear throughout embryonic development and is essential for cochlear neurosensory development. However, the temporal window for which Gata3 is required for proper formation of the cochlear neurosensory epithelia remains unclear. To investigate the role of Gata3 in cochlear neurosensory development in the late prosensory stages, we used the Sox2-creERT2 mouse line to target and conditionally delete Gata3 at E11.5, a timepoint before cells have fully committed to a neurosensory fate. While the inner ears of Sox2-creERT2: Gata3 f/f mice appear normal with no gross structural defects, the sensory cells in the organ of Corti are partially lost and disorganized in an increasing severity from base to apex. Additionally, spiral ganglion neurons display aberrant peripheral projections, including increased distances between radial bundles and disorganization upon reaching the organ of Corti. Furthermore, heterozygous Sox2-creERT2: Gata3 f/+ mice show a reduced aberrant phenotype in comparison to the homozygous mutant, supporting the hypothesis that Gata3 is not only required for proper formation at the later proneurosensory stage, but also that a specific expression level of Gata3 is required. Therefore, this study provides evidence that Gata3 plays a time-sensitive and dose-dependent role in the development of sensory and neuronal cells in late proneurosensory stages. A central assumption in the behavioral sciences is that choice behavior generalizes enough across individuals that measurements from a sampled group can predict the behavior of the population. Following from this assumption, the unit of behavioral sampling or measurement for most neuroimaging studies is the individual; however, cognitive neuroscience is increasingly acknowledging a dissociation between neural activity that predicts individual behavior and that which predicts the average or aggregate behavior of the population suggesting a greater importance of individual differences than is typically acknowledged. For instance, past work has demonstrated that some, but not all, of the neural activity observed during value-based decision-making is able to predict not just individual subjects' choices but also the success of products on large, online marketplaces—even when those two behavioral outcomes deviate from one another—suggesting that some neural component processes of decision-making generalize to aggregate market responses more readily across individuals than others do. While the bulk of such research has highlighted affect-related neural responses (i.e. in the nucleus accumbens) as a better predictor of group-level behavior than frontal cortical activity associated with the integration of more idiosyncratic choice components, more recent evidence has implicated responses in visual cortical regions as strong predictors of group preference. Taken together, these findings suggest a role of neural responses during early perception in reinforcing choice consistency across individuals and raise fundamental scientific questions about the role sensory systems in value-based decision-making processes. We use a multivariate pattern analysis approach to show that single-trial visually evoked electroencephalographic (EEG) activity can predict individual choice throughout the post-stimulus epoch; however, a nominally sparser set of activity predicts the aggregate behavior of the population. These findings support an account in which a subset of the neural activity underlying individual choice processes can scale to predict behavioral consistency across people, even when the choice behavior of the sample does not match the aggregate behavior of the population. Macroevolution can be regarded as the result of evolutionary changes of synergistically acting genes. Unfortunately, the importance of these genes in macroevolution is difficult to assess and hence the identification of macroevolutionary key genes is a major challenge in evolutionary biology. In this study, we designed various word embedding libraries of natural language processing (NLP) considering the multiple mechanisms of evolutionary genomics. A novel method (IKGM) based on three types of attention mechanisms (domain attention, kmer attention and fused attention) were proposed to calculate the weights of different genes in macroevolution. Taking 34 species of diurnal butterflies and nocturnal moths in Lepidoptera as an example, we identified a few of key genes with high weights, which annotated to the functions of circadian rhythms, sensory organs, as well as behavioral habits etc. This study not only provides a novel method to identify the key genes of macroevolution at the genomic level, but also helps us to understand the microevolution mechanisms of diurnal butterflies and nocturnal moths in Lepidoptera. Freshwater mussels of the genus Buldowskia (Bivalvia, Unionidae) are distributed from the Amur River basin in Russia and China southward to the Korean Peninsula and some Japanese islands. This work is an integrative morphological study of Buldowskia suifunica glochidia from locations in the Primorsky Territory, the Russian Far East. Glochidia of B. suifunica, taken from the same gill have asynchronous development. The external and internal morphology of its shell has been characterized. The morphology of its sensory system, within three stages of larval development (immature, intermediate and mature glochidia), consists of hair cells as well as nonhair cells. Their muscle system is composed of massive adductor and minor muscle bundles. The FMRFamid-ergic nervous system turned out to be a complex system includes basal cells (neurons), their neurites and anterior neurons. FMRFamide and tubulin was found in all neurons. Glochidia of B. suifunica have only four 5-HT-lir neurons. We concluded that B. suifunica glochidial nervous system differs from those of the larval systems of planktotrophic marine mollusks. The geese's tongue filiform papillae are particularly long, and exhibit the same morphology of a tooth, evoking the lingual teeth of several fishes. In adult animals, they contain numerous mechanical Herbst's corpuscles but no taste buds. In the embryo, they appear since stage 38 and acquire their definitive shape between stages 38 and 42. They express several proteins associated with mammalian tooth development (BMP4, b-catenin, SHH, PITX2, PAX9), also known to be linked to parrot's pseudoteeth and goose's denticulations development. Neurofilaments are early present in the papillae primordia, and appear particularly numerous in adult papillae. Our results suggest that these papillae constitute a mechanical organ with a « tooth shape » derived from ancestral odontodes, whose development is controlled by numerous genes involved in classical odontogenesis. One of the most captivating questions in neuroscience revolves around the brain's ability to efficiently and durably capture and store information. It must process continuous input from sensory organs while also encoding memories that can persist throughout a lifetime. What are the cellular-, subcellular-, and network-level mechanisms that underlie this remarkable capacity for long-term information storage? Furthermore, what contributions do distinct types of GABAergic interneurons make to this process? As the hippocampus plays a pivotal role in memory, our review focuses on three aspects: (1) delineation of hippocampal interneuron types and their connectivity, (2) interneuron plasticity, and (3) activity patterns of interneurons during memory-related rhythms, including the role of long-range interneurons and disinhibition. We explore how these three elements, together showcasing the remarkable diversity of inhibitory circuits, shape the processing of memories in the hippocampus. It is estimated that animals pollinate 87.5% of flowering plants worldwide and that managed honey bees (Apis mellifera) account for 30-50% of this ecosystem service to agriculture. In addition to their important role as pollinators, honey bees are well-established insect models for studying learning and memory, behavior, caste differentiation, epigenetic mechanisms, olfactory biology, sex determination, and eusociality. Despite their importance to agriculture, knowledge of honey bee biology lags behind many other livestock species. In this study, we have used scRNA-Seq to map cell types to different developmental stages of the worker honey bee (prepupa at day 11 and pupa at day 15) and sought to determine their gene expression signatures. To identify cell-type populations, we examined the cell-tocell network based on the similarity of the single-cells transcriptomic profiles. Grouping similar cells together we identified 63 different cell clusters of which 17 clusters were identifiable at both stages. To determine genes associated with specific cell populations or with a particular biological process involved in honey bee development, we used gene coexpression analysis. We combined this analysis with literature mining, the honey bee protein atlas, and gene ontology analysis to determine cell cluster identity. Of the cell clusters identified, 17 were related to the nervous system and sensory organs, 7 to the fat body, 19 to the cuticle, 5 to muscle, 4 to compound eye, 2 to midgut, 2 to hemocytes, and 1 to malpighian tubule/pericardial nephrocyte. To our knowledge, this is the first whole single-cell atlas of honey bees at any stage of development and demonstrates the potential for further work to investigate their biology at the cellular level.
