The rapid development of rural tourism has placed significant pressure on the rural environment, and relying solely on the government and market forces is insufficient for effective governance. It is urgent to integrate endogenous rural forces into environmental governance. The development of social behavior theory offers new insights into exploring sustainable approaches for resident participation in environmental governance in rural tourism areas. This paper, based on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) theoretical framework from social behavior theory, outlines the entire process of rural tourism residents transitioning from individual stimuli to psychological responses and ultimately to participation in environmental governance. This study combines the Motivation-Opportunity-Ability (MOA) model to analyze the stimulus factors affecting local residents and jointly constructs a path mechanism model for resident participation in environmental governance in rural tourism areas. A total of 462 valid questionnaires were collected through a survey, and the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method was used for empirical testing to determine the path coefficients between variables. On this basis, a system dynamics model was constructed to simulate the dynamic evolution of the relationships between variables. This study found the following: (1) In the process of rural tourism, residents' participation in environmental governance relies on motivational factors at the stimulus level to play a core leading role; opportunity factors act as catalysts, and ability factors serve as auxiliaries; participation willingness at the organism level plays a crucial role. (2) Material pursuit and formal institutions are the strongest single sustainable factors for residents' participation in environmental governance in rural tourism areas; combinations of variables such as local attachment, governance knowledge, and governance identity have significant effects. It is recommended that future rural tourism leverage government guidance, coordinate interests, and adhere to a collaborative development approach to ensure the sustainable development of the rural tourism environment. As sustainable geotourism can revitalize local economies and conserve resources, it is increasingly becoming a research focus. One of the most important elements of sustainable geotourism is the participation of local residents. Extant studies have demonstrated that the sense of community and attitude toward tourism development influence the participation of local residents. In addition, previous studies have demonstrated that gender, education level, birthplace, and residency length are variables that can predict these factors. In this study, we analyze whether local residents' mobility intention is a variable that can predict their sense of community and attitude toward tourism development. We also investigate which variable is the best predictor among gender, education level, birthplace, length of residency, and mobility intention. Gangwon Paleozoic Geopark was selected as the study site. As a representative declining area (an area with extinction risk), Gangwon-do is experiencing a serious population decline. Data were collected through a survey using a random sampling method. A total of 400 responses were analyzed, excluding 66 invalid questionnaires. The results revealed that the groups demonstrating the most difference in each factor were the groups for mobility intention and education level, followed by those for the length of residency (using ten years as the cut-off point) and gender. The difference in birthplace did not demonstrate a significant effect on any factor. There have been many studies on demographic characteristics, such as gender and length of residency, but there have been no studies on residents' mobility intention. However, our analysis demonstrates that residents' mobility intention has the most significant effect among all variables. This study provides insights into how residents' participation can be induced more efficiently to achieve sustainable tourism. This study established a planning framework for effective small‐scale urban wetland restoration by adapting an analytical template used for watershed‐scale projects. We evaluated the optimal water ponding scale and location for small urban wetland restoration. We calculated the achievable water ponding area in Oyama Wetland, Hokkaido, Japan, by the use of an artificial water supply and elevation differences without reliance on precipitation. The volume of infiltration into the sediments, a component of the water balance equation, was estimated during a temporary suspension of the artificial water supply, and the estimate was then validated by modeling the decrease of the water ponding area from 2008, before the introduction of the artificial water supply, with high reproducibility (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency = 0.68). The estimated attainable water ponding area was 1172 m2. We identified where a water ponding location could be most efficiently established through principal component and cluster analyses of groundwater level observation data collected from 2008 to 2010. Areas with high groundwater levels (first axis) and stable groundwater levels (second axis) accounted for approximately 73% of the cumulative contribution ratio. The calculated potentially achievable ponding area was consistent with the area achieved by the actual wetland restoration. This study shows how efficient and safe restoration of urban wetlands can be achieved with a dataset that volunteers and others can obtain independently. Long‐term data analysis using the adapted template allows for clear identification of discrepancies between desired reference conditions and current conditions, facilitating the setting of objectives that promote long‐term monitoring. Residents' educational expectations for the next generation are closely related to individuals' awareness‐raising and community development, reflecting the sustainability of tourism development. However, few studies have focused on the formation of parental educational expectations (PEE) for their children during the process of residents' tourism participation. To fill this gap, this study examines the impact of resident participation on PEE using a three‐dimensional framework for resident participation that incorporates the decision‐making, economic, and social dimensions. A binary logistic regression was employed to analyze the survey data from 473 residents in Jiuzhai Valley, China. The results indicate that social participation is the strongest facilitator for PEE. Economic participation exerts a negative effect on PEE, whereas decision‐making participation has a positive but insignificant effect. This study holds implications for local authorities managing tourism destinations regarding improving the efficiency of residents' participatory behaviors and human capital accumulation in developing countries. This study explores the factors influencing residents' decisions to participate in community-based tourism (CBT) in the coastal lagoon region of central Vietnam. Using a mixed-methods approach, including a survey of 315 residents and regression analysis, the results indicate that community awareness of tourism resources and supportive policies significantly influence participation intentions. Factors such as household characteristics, livelihood benefits, tourism resources, local CBT development planning, and community organization positively impact participation. Conversely, adverse events and operational barriers negatively affect participation. The study highlights the importance of enhancing community awareness, developing tourism resources, and providing supportive policy frameworks to promote sustainable CBT and improve local livelihoods. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for resilience-building measures to mitigate the negative impacts of adverse events such as the COVID-19 pandemic on community tourism activities. AbstractThe participation of residents plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable development of tourism in rural community. This study proposes a novel concept, namely community-based psychological ownership (C-PO) and examines its dimensionality and association with community participation in rural tourism. The scale of C-PO was developed through 4 stages. In Stage 1, initial item pool with 25 items is generated based on a qualitative study from Shangchengdai and Dachen Village in Zhejiang, China. Through Stage 2 and Stage 3, a 23-item six-dimensional scale is confirmed using data collected in two on-site surveys (n = 93, n = 416) at Maoyang Township, Zhejiang. In Study 4, using survey data (n = 485) collected from Heyang Village and Maoyang Township, Zhejiang, the relationships between C-PO and community participation in rural tourism development are examined. The results indicate that self-identity, self-efficacy, community responsibility and community belongingness have positive effects on community participation, while community possession and territoriality have a non-significant and negative impact, respectively. This study examines the influence of social support from intermediary organizations on innovativeness and subjective happiness in community-based tourism (CBT). The authors collected data from 236 residents who had participated in the Tour Dure project in South Korea. The analysis, using partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), shows that social support from intermediary organizations has a positive effect on the innovativeness of residents. Further, the more innovativeness the residents showed, the more their subjective happiness increased. In other words, social support from intermediary organizations plays an important role in improving innovativeness, and in turn, the subjective happiness of residents. There have been many claims that resident participation is important in CBT, but it has usually been treated as a slogan without offering specific proposals for boosting such participation. This study discovered that the social support given by intermediary organizations to residents plays an important role in innovativeness and subjective happiness. Objective: To compare surgical outcomes in patients with benign diseases who underwent laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) to determine the association between surgical outcomes and resident participation in the gynecologic field. Methods: A single‐center retrospective study was conducted of patients diagnosed with benign gynecologic diseases who underwent LAVH between January 2010 and December 2015. Clinicopathologic characteristics and surgical outcomes were compared between the resident involvement and non‐involvement groups. The primary endpoint was the 30‐day postoperative morbidity. Observers were propensity matched for 17 covariates for resident involvement or non‐involvement. Results: Of the 683 patients involved in the study, 165 underwent LAVH with resident involvement and 518 underwent surgery without resident involvement. After propensity score matching (157 observations), 30‐day postoperative morbidity occurred in 6 (3.8%) and 4 (2.5%) patients in the resident involvement and non‐involvement groups, respectively (P = 0.501). The length of hospital stay differed significantly between the two groups: 5 days in the resident involvement group and 4 days in the non‐involvement group (P < 0.001). On multivariate analysis, Charlson Comorbidity Index >2 (odds ratio [OR] 8.01, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.68–23.96; P < 0.001), operative time (OR 1.02, 95% CI 1.01–1.03; P < 0.001), and estimated blood loss (OR 1.00, 95% CI 1.00–1.00; P < 0.001) were significantly associated with 30‐day morbidity, but resident involvement was not statistically significant. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the 30‐day morbidity rate when residents participated in LAVH. As a new project associated with urban agriculture and community forestry in China, developing community gardens has been a concern of urban planners and managers. However, the response of urban residents to this project is still unknown, creating an awareness gap between communities and policy makers. This gap limits the successful implementation of the project. A combined method of on-site and online questionnaire was performed in eight sample residential areas in Wuhan. Results showed that the majority of the 496 respondents had favorable views, although the specific willingness varied. Lack of awareness about community gardens was considered the biggest obstacle restricting residents' willingness, accounting for 69.15%. Other factors included confused relationships with neighbors (66.13%), imperfect policies (55.44%), and high planting costs (41.94%). The local government was highly expected to plan more land for agriculture use by 76.61% of the respondents. In addition, the respondents desired the government to conduct training on cultivating technologies (58.67%), address possible conflicts (57.46%), supply seeds and fertilizer (54.23%), and provide guidance in processing food products (34.48%). These findings will help local governments and managers draft scientific proposals closely related to the public's perspectives in implementing community gardens in urban areas and provide informative references for other cities. There is a growing global trend to encourage citizen participation in solving urban problems, and there is worldwide consensus that the public voice needs to be considered. This study uses an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to focus on the factors influencing resident engagement following changes in renewal strategies in older residential communities in China. Empirical analysis was carried out based on structural equation modeling (SEM) of a completed questionnaire with 865 respondents. The results showed that Neighborhood Relations (NR) had a positive impact on Participation Attitude (PA); both PA and Awareness Participation (AP) had a positive effect on Self-evaluation (SE), and SE and AP had a positive impact on Participation Guarantee (PG). A survey was also conducted on residents' concerns and perceptions of the redevelopment of the old neighborhood, analyzing the current issues of residents' more significant concerns. It showed that public emergencies can affect residents' inherent perceptions. This study enriches the China-specific focus of the issue and is a reference for similar studies in the future. This paper compares the perspectives of six professions -social workers, lawyers, nurses, physicians, psychologists and public health professionals- on ways to improve the health and social conditions of a prototypical low-income urban community. It examines how the cohort defined and deliberated on the process of involving "the community" in addressing issues facing a hypothetical neighborhood, even when the question was not part of the research guidelines. A framework for constituency participation emerged from the data and was further developed to include 5 components: "who, why, when, ways and what level." The type, level, and meaning of community was complex and multi-faceted, raising critical questions about professional-community relationships and the role of community development practitioners. Ultimately, community participation was identified as both difficult and transformative at the same time. Attention by community practitioners to the "five Ws framework for constituency participation" may maximize positive outcomes for collaboration between professionals and community. Research on resident participation in neighborhood regeneration provides valuable insights for urban policymakers in environmental governance. While previous studies have extensively examined various influencing factors, they often neglect the impact of behavioral inertia. To address this gap, this study conducts a behavioral experiment to quantitatively assess the presence and impact of behavioral inertia on residents' governance and financial participation behaviors. A total of 576 valid survey questionnaires were collected, and conditional logit model and ordered logit model were utilized for analysis. The study reveals that behavioral inertia is indeed observable in residents' governance participation and financial participation behaviors. Furthermore, the findings underscore distinct drivers of behavioral inertia for these two types of participation behaviors, with emotional reactions predominantly influencing governance participation, while short-term thinking largely shapes financial participation. Theoretically, this study uses the innovative concept of "behavioral inertia" to offer a new explanatory framework for aspects of behavior that cannot be solely explained by the attributes of regeneration plans. Furthermore, the behavioral experiments utilized in this study exemplify how the research framework of behavioral science can be applied to the study of urban governance in a broad context internationally. Understanding how resident participation in surgery affects outcomes is critical for academic surgeons. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if resident participation was associated with adverse outcomes for inguinal hernia repair. We used the Veterans Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program to look at 61,737 patients aged ≥18 y who had open inguinal hernia repairs from 1998 to 2018. Propensity weighting was used to compare postoperative complications and operative time for patients having surgery performed by an attending alone versus attending with a postgraduate year (PGY) 1, 3, or 5 residents. There were 29,806 hernias (48%) repaired by an attending, 12,024 (19%) by an intern, 9008 (15%) by a PGY-3 resident, and 10,898 (18%) by a PGY-5 resident. After propensity weighting, there was a 0.13% (95% CI −0.11% to 0.38%, P = 0.29) increase in complications with PGY-1 participation compared to cases performed by attendings alone, a 0.3% increase (95% CI 0.01% to 0.59%, P = 0.04) for PGY-3 residents, and a 0.4% increase (95% CI 0.11% to 0.69%, P = 0.007) for PGY-5 residents. There was also an increase in operative time of 26 min (95% CI 25 to 27, P < 0.001) with PGY-1 participation, 19 min (95% CI 18 to 20, P < 0.001) with PGY-3 participation, and 23 min (95% CI 22 to 24, P < 0.001) with PGY-5 participation. Resident involvement in inguinal hernia surgery was associated with a significant increase in operative time but had a minimal impact on postoperative complications. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Resident participation in waste management is essential to overcome waste problems effectively. In many developing countries, the local government has been struggling to encourage resident involvement in the waste management process, but the participation rate is still low. Thus, it requires a system that can encourage residents to participate effectively and sustainably. Therefore, this study aimed to determine what determinant factors, either extrinsic or intrinsic, significantly improve resident participation by changing behaviour toward waste management. METHODS: This study tried to get insights from previous studies about key determinant factors affecting resident behaviour toward waste management to improve participation, significantly using a literature review method. FINDINGS: Educational setting for residents is crucial to improve waste management participation by cultivating key intrinsic factors with support from extrinsic factors that lead to changing behaviour. This study identified eight types of key contents shared in the educational setting to ensure its improvement. Key intrinsic factors should be cultivated, including six kinds of knowledge and five emotional domain factors. The six critical types of knowledge include technical experience, waste management performance knowledge, perception of benefits, environmental awareness, understanding of individual and social responsibility, and understanding the social norms and regulations. The five intrinsic factors in the emotional domain include environmental efficacy, motivation, personal moral norms, PBC, and Attitude toward waste management. All the critical determinant factors, including intrinsic and extrinsic factors, should support each other to improve residents’ behaviour, leading to sustainable participation. CONCLUSION: Relevance of educational content to the residents is crucial to ensure educational intervention effectiveness. With full support from the antecedent factors, waste management behaviour can be nurtured sustainably, significantly increasing the participation rate. Combining extrinsic and intrinsic factors is recommended to ensure the effectiveness of the improvement of resident participation.

Background: As microsurgery gains in popularity, surgical training becomes more critical. There have been numerous studies assessing resident involvement in an array of surgical subspecialties; however, there is a dearth of data as it relates to patient outcomes in the field of Reconstructive Microsurgery. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted by searching for all free tissue transfer cases from 2011 to 2012 in the NSQIP database. Study groups were divided based on presence of a resident. The flaps were then subdivided into type of free flap. The primary outcome was the development of major complications, defined as return to OR or flap loss. Secondary outcomes were total hospital length of stay, total operative time, and minor complications defined as surgical site infection, wound dehiscence, and bleeding not requiring return to OR or readmission. Results: A total of 462 free tissue transfers were identified, 92 of which were performed without resident participation, and 369 included resident participation. The majority of flaps of cases were done for breast reconstruction. After adjusting for comorbidities, cases in which residents participated had a statistically significant increase in bleeding, SSI, and total operative time. Interestingly, cases involving a PGY-6 and above conferred a protective effect from developing major complications. Conclusions: Resident involvement in Reconstructive Microsurgery cases is safe, with only a slightly higher probability of minor complications. There was no difference in major complications, and in fact, having a chief resident and above participate in the case conferred a protective effect. Attending surgeons can be confident that their patients will be safe, and that involving residents will not negatively affect their outcomes. Level of evidence: Level III, risk/prognostic study. Place attachment and public participation are increasingly important to sustainable community development and environmental protection, and influence the degree to which residents value community development. Unfortunately, social segregation has broken value consensus in many modern communities, particularly Chinese communities, which traditionally emphasize interpersonal interactions. This has created discrepancies between theory and reality in community development, making it necessary to clarify the influence of relational capital (e.g., trust, identification, and norm of reciprocity) on the relationship between place attachment and resident participation. This study adopted convenience sampling to conduct a case study in Eastern Taiwan. A total of 310 valid samples were collected. The relationships between constructs are determined by a linear structural equation model. Our results show that place attachment and resident participation are positively correlated and that reciprocal norms are important mediators of the influence of place attachment on resident participation. Since there are various stakeholders related to water in Blue-Green Infrastructure that perform various ecological functions in a given city, there is a need for a plan to manage their interests and conflicts. Previous studies have verified the spatial preferences of many local residents using techniques, such as the public participation geographic information system, but have failed to show how stakeholders vary in regard to their dependence on water and their different spatial preferences. Therefore, this study intended to discuss the direction of collaborative planning by analyzing the Blue-Green Infrastructure of Siheung Hojobul wetland using spatial Q methodology, finding various stakeholders, and identifying the areas they prefer. The analysis results showed that local residents and environmental NGOs want to conserve middle and upper streams, but ecotourism guides and officials want to develop them for ecotourism, demonstrating a great difference in perspectives. However, they all agreed to develop a lower stream for ecotourism. Although this study has limitations as a single case study, the spatial Q methodology used in this study is significant in demonstrating that the use of the Blue-Green Infrastructure planning method for resident participation can reduce conflicts and encourage cooperation among competing parties. Suburbs are at the forefront of urban change, with urban policy looking to increase the density of suburban centres. Thus, the compact city has emerged as a dominant urban policy paradigm, where policy settings are configured to enable densification in designated centres. For some, this is a form of post-suburbanism, characterised by new drivers, experiences and outcomes of suburban redevelopment pressures. However, suburban densification can emerge as a site of contestation as diverse interests, such as residents, developers and governments, come together. We explore three suburban centres in Sydney, Australia, to identify the diverse array of resident positions, objectives and strategies that emerge in response to suburban densification. Drawing from literature on NIMBY (not-in-my-backyard), YIMBY (yes-in-my-backyard) and urban growth machines, we establish an analytical framework that disrupts simple pro- and anti-development positions, identifying five resident groups: supporters; resisters; opponents; expansionists; and beneficiaries. Objective: This research assessed if attending surgical volume impacted the relationship between resident participation and operative time in robotic surgery for benign gynecologic conditions. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 1 academic and 1 community hospital, where a total of 329 patients underwent robotic surgery for benign gynecologic conditions from January 2018 to March 2019. The primary outcome was total operative time. The primary exposure was resident participation versus nonparticipation in robotic cases. The patients were operated on by 3 surgeons from the same group. The lifetime robotic hysterectomy volumes were 1250 (over 11 years), 146 (over 8 years), and 107 (over 8 years), respectively for the 3 surgeons. Results: The unadjusted mean total operative time was longer for cases involving residents (130.3 minutes [95% confidence interval (CI): 122.8–137.7 minutes] versus 109.6 minutes [95% CI: 104.0–115.3 minutes]; p < 0.001). Among hysterectomy cases, the adjusted mean total operative time was 22.3 minutes longer for cases with resident participation versus no participation (95% CI: 11.9–32.7 minutes longer; p < 0.001). Among hysterectomy cases, the mean total operative time for the high-volume surgeon increased by 14.9 minutes with resident participation, compared to an increase of 45.3 minutes for his 2 low-volume partners. Conclusions: This retrospective chart review's results suggest that attending surgeon robotic volume and surgery type appear to mediate the relationship between resident participation in robotic surgery and total operative time. In the context of increasing focus on social sustainability, neighborhood rehabilitation has emerged as a crucial component of global urban renewal initiatives. Distinct from most renewal paradigms that are usually one-offs, neighborhood rehabilitation is a long-term endeavor that requires ongoing resident participation to effectively address diverse needs, investment shortages, and governance challenges. Extant research predominantly focuses on residents' initial engagement, leaving the dynamics of continued participation and its influencing factors largely unexamined. Employing the Expectation-Confirmation Model (ECM), this study explores how residents' initial participation experiences influence their intentions to continue participation. Analyzing questionnaire responses from 367 experienced residents in Wuhan, China, the study finds that a mere 38.2 % of residents exhibit re-engage intention. Path analysis shows that initial participation experience influences residents' re-engage intention indirectly through participation satisfaction and perceived usefulness. Residents' re-engage intention is most influenced by level of influence residents hold in decision-making, followed by type of activities they engage in, and stage of their initial involvement. Resident participation is essential for neighborhood rehabilitation. It requires the active involvement of residents and efficient management by organizers. To improve the effectiveness of resident participation, it is necessary to understand the critical success factors (CSFs) underlying it. However, previous research has examined the critical factors from a single-stakeholder perspective, overlooking potential differences in perceptions among stakeholders with diverse roles and rehabilitation experiences. Based on 30 interviews and 255 questionnaires from six stakeholder groups in Wuhan, China, this study explores how the perception of critical factors for effective resident participation varies among local government, community-based organization, designer, contractor, consulting party, and resident. Thirty-seven factors were identified and compared among the stakeholders. Financial Incentive (for participation organizers) was identified as the most critical factor for effective resident participation, followed by Information Disclosure and Transparency, and Trust. Results from the analysis of variance (ANOVA) show that the six groups differed significantly in the importance of most factors (25/37), especially in Participant Education and Prejudice against the Working Group. Interview results indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic and rehabilitation experience changed stakeholders' perceived importance of some factors. Specifically, in future RP initiatives, extra emphasis could be placed on Trait and Capacity (of the working group) and Participation-assistance Technologies. Stakeholders regarded these two factors as more critical as their rehabilitation experience accumulated. By understanding stakeholders' conflicting and changing perceptions of effective resident participation, suggestions were proposed to each stakeholder group to fulfill their distinct participation objectives and improve the overall effectiveness of participation practices. This study examined the relationship between residents’ level of participation in house design and level of residential satisfaction in Akure, Nigeria. The study was based on the idea that the goal of housing projects is to provide satisfactory environments for users. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 304 household heads in transitional and peripheral zones of the city. Data were obtained through a structured questionnaire and focus group discussions and observations. The obtained data were subsequently subjected to single-factor descriptive analysis, mean satisfaction scoring, and categorical regression analysis. Results showed a positive significant relationship between the level of resident participation in house design and the level of residential satisfaction. The significant participatory predictors of satisfaction were number of bedrooms, general house design, development of the brief for the design, arrangement of interior spaces, and selection of finishing materials. Space size and building materials were not significant predictors in this context. The obtained p-value of 0.000 indicated that the regression model was significant. This study recommends a high level of resident participation in house design to achieve a high level of residential housing satisfaction in Nigeria.

This study intended to explore the role of residents' participation on their perceived benefits of endogenous rural tourism project in Kumbalangi in Kerala, India. Using data collected from registered voters in Kumbalangi, the study revealed that that participation in the planning phase was a significant factor of participation in the implementation phase. The finding also showed that resident participation in the implementation phase significantly influenced resident's perceived benefits of rural tourism development in infrastructure, income, quality of life, and culture. The purpose of this article is to study socially sustainable innovation processes in urban development. Which elements can be identified to support socially sustainable innovation processes in urban development and how were the elements realized in urban innovation processes in Finland in 2013 and 2015 are the research questions. According to the literature review, socially sustainable innovation processes include an open and interactive development approach, resident and user‐driven involvement, communication, learning and feedback, and impact assessment. To track the elements in practice a qualitative approach using case‐based research was conducted. The results reveal that urban development processes in Finland could not be considered socially sustainable because the elements are realized differently. Although many current processes include resident participation, impact assessment is lacking. Abstract Background With the emphasis on quality metrics guiding reimbursement, concerns have emerged regarding resident participation in patient care. This study aimed to evaluate whether resident participation in high-risk elective general surgery procedures is safe. Materials and methods The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database (2005-2012) was used to identify patients undergoing one of five high-risk general surgery procedures. Resident and nonresident groups were created using a 2:1 propensity score match. Postoperative outcomes were calculated using univariate statistics and multivariable logistic regression for the two groups. Predictors of mortality and morbidity were identified using machine learning in the form of decision trees. Results Twenty-five thousand three hundred sixty three patients met our inclusion criteria. Following matching, each group contained 500 patients and was comparable for matched characteristics. Thirty-day mortality was similar between the groups (2.4% versus 2.6%; P = 0.839). Deep surgical site infection (0% versus 1.6%; P = 0.005), urinary tract infection (5% versus 2.5%; P = 0.029), and operative time (275.6 min versus 250 min; P = 0.0064) were significantly higher with resident participation. Resident participation was not predictive of mortality or complications, while age, American society of anesthesiologists class, and functional status were leading predictors of both. Conclusions Despite growing time constraints and pressure to perform, surgical resident participation remains safe. This paper, the first step of a project aiming at analysing the establishment of practices of resident participation and consultation in urban renewal in China, proposes a reflection upon these practices through a comparison with similar experiences in France. Identifying some convergences between the practices adopted in the two countries, the paper proposes to reflect upon such puzzling outcomes, provocatively questioning the classic distinction between authoritarian and democratic regimes. It suggests that our analyses and interpretations shall get rid of classical binary categorisations between regime types to embrace a comparative analysis of the policies and practices introduced in various local contexts, and reflect upon their underlying logics. In so doing, the paper engages with He and Warren's concept of 'authoritarian deliberation' as well as with the critiques expressed by a number of French scholars on concepts such as 'participative democracy' and 'good governance'. Such a focus on the underlying logics rather than on regime types will show that the concept of 'authoritarian deliberation' does not only apply to authoritarian contexts. Rather, it represents a fruitful starting point to analyse and reflect upon instances of participation and deliberation in both democratic and authoritarian countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives To describe the impact of resident involvement in tympanoplasty on operative time and surgical complication rates. Study Design Case series with chart review. Setting Tertiary medical center. Subjects and Methods Current Procedural Terminology codes were used to identify patients in the 2011-2014 public use files of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program who underwent a tympanoplasty or tympanomastoidectomy. Cases were included if the database indicated whether the operating room was staffed with an attending alone or an attending with residents. Categorical and continuous variables were compared with chi-square, Fisher's exact, and Mann-Whitney U tests. Generalized linear models with a log-link and gamma distribution were used to examine the factors affecting operative time. Results Overall, 1045 cases met our study criteria (tympanoplasty, n = 797; tympanomastoidectomy, n = 248). Resident involvement increased mean operative time for tympanoplasties by 46% (107 vs 73 minutes, P < .001) and tympanomastoidectomies by 49% (175 vs 117 minutes, P < .001). While controlling for confounding factors, the variable with the largest impact on operative time was resident involvement. There were no significant differences observed in the rate of surgical complications between attending-alone and attending-resident cases. Conclusion Resident involvement in tympanoplasty and tympanomastoidectomy did not affect the surgical complication rate. Resident involvement increased operative time for tympanoplasties and tympanomastoidectomies; however, the specific reasons for the increase are not explained by the available data. ABSTRACT Background The purpose of this study was to present our assessment of the impact of resident participation on operative duration and outcomes after hemithyroidectomy, which may identify opportunities for optimization of educational programs, reduction in cost of healthcare delivery, and maximizing patient safety, while continuing to train a competent physician workforce for the future. Methods The American College of Surgeons' National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) dataset from 2006 to 2012 identified 13,151 adult patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy. Differences in operative duration, postoperative complications, reoperation, and readmission rates were assessed based on stratification by resident participation in surgery. Results Compared with operations performed by attending surgeons alone, resident participation with attending supervision prolonged the operative duration by 10.5% (82.5 minutes vs 91.2 minutes; p < .0001). The incidence of readmission and wound complications was higher for patients who underwent surgery with resident participation. Conclusion Resident participation in hemithyroidectomy may be associated with increased operative duration, higher incidence of wound complications, and readmission. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
