We developed an inexpensive light instrument (ILI) and protocol for the measurement of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) at discrete depths underwater. We tested the accuracy of the ILI against a submersible radiometer (RAD) and a Secchi disk method. The ILI consists of a PAR sensor (HOBO MX2202; Onset) attached to a flat disk that ensures that the sensor faces upwards when lowered through the water column. The flat disk is attached to a rope marked at 1-m increments (to 20 m) that allows for the measurement of PAR at discrete depths. A weight is attached to the bottom of the flat disk to prevent it from drifting. The ILI is much cheaper (US $130), less bulky, and lighter (1.1 kg) than the RAD (US $40,000, weight 9 kg). We tested our method in a mesotrophic lake and in an oligotrophic lake in summer and fall 2023. The correlations between the RAD and ILI measurements of irradiance at depth (as a percentage of surface irradiance), and the depth to which 1% of the PAR at the surface penetrated the water (Z1%PAR), were high and did not significantly differ. There was a difference of 8% in the Z1%PAR determined by the ILI compared with that determined by the RAD. However, the estimated Z1%PAR based on the Secchi disk data was 37% deeper than that calculated with the RAD data. Our method should enable the study of underwater PAR in remote regions where transporting bulky and expensive equipment is impossible due to logistic and/or financial constraints. A description of the approach is presented that allows one to control the quality of georeferencing of the MTVZA-GYa device and determine the optimal values of the correction parameters. The analysis of the data from this instrument showed that the main contribution to georeferencing errors is introduced by the roll, pitch, and yaw angles, which determine the discrepancy between the instrument coordinate system and the spacecraft coordinate system. In this regard, an iterative algorithm for selecting these angles was proposed where the difference in measurements on the ascending and descending half-turns of the MTVZA-GYa instrument was used as the minimizing function. As a result of applying this algorithm to the results of the MTVZA-GYa measurements in 2020, the mean values of the correction roll, pitch, and yaw angles of this device were calculated. The values were (–0.84 ± 0.15)° for the yaw angle, (–0.44 ± 0.14)° for the roll angle, and (+1.13 ± 0.05)° for the pitch angle. It was shown that the introduction of these angles into the MTVZA-GYa georeferencing procedure can significantly reduce its errors. Thus, the mean divergence of coastlines taken from the high-precision geographic databases and reconstructed from radiometric portraits when adjusting georeferencing is 4.5 km. Climate change is undeniably one of the most pressing and critical challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. In this context, monitoring the Earth's Energy Imbalance (EEI) is fundamental in conjunction with greenhouse gases (GHGs) in order to comprehensively understand and address climate change. The French Uvsq-Sat NG pathfinder mission addresses this issue through the implementation of a Six-Unit CubeSat, which has dimensions of 111.3 × 36.6 × 38.8 cm in its unstowed configuration. Uvsq-Sat NG is a satellite mission spearheaded by the Laboratoire Atmosphères, Observations Spatiales (LATMOS), and supported by the International Satellite Program in Research and Education (INSPIRE). The launch of this mission is planned for 2025. One of the Uvsq-Sat NG objectives is to ensure the smooth continuity of the Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) initiated via the Uvsq-Sat and Inspire-Sat satellites. Uvsq-Sat NG seeks to achieve broadband ERB measurements using state-of-the-art yet straightforward technologies. Another goal of the Uvsq-Sat NG mission is to conduct precise and comprehensive monitoring of atmospheric gas concentrations (CO 2 and CH 4 ) on a global scale and to investigate its correlation with Earth's Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR). Uvsq-Sat NG carries several payloads, including Earth Radiative Sensors (ERSs) for monitoring incoming solar radiation and outgoing terrestrial radiation. A Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectrometer is onboard to assess GHGs' atmospheric concentrations through observations in the wavelength range of 1200 to 2000 nm. Uvsq-Sat NG also includes a high-definition camera (NanoCam) designed to capture images of the Earth in the visible range. The NanoCam will facilitate data post-processing acquired via the spectrometer by ensuring accurate geolocation of the observed scenes. It will also offer the capability of observing the Earth's limb, thus providing the opportunity to roughly estimate the vertical temperature profile of the atmosphere. We present here the scientific objectives of the Uvsq-Sat NG mission, along with a comprehensive overview of the CubeSat platform's concepts and payload properties as well as the mission's current status. Furthermore, we also describe a method for the retrieval of atmospheric gas columns (CO 2 , CH 4 , O 2 , H 2 O) from the Uvsq-Sat NG NIR Spectrometer data. The retrieval is based on spectra simulated for a range of environmental conditions (surface pressure, surface reflectance, vertical temperature profile, mixing ratios of primary gases, water vapor, other trace gases, cloud and aerosol optical depth distributions) as well as spectrometer characteristics (Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and spectral resolution from 1 to 6 nm). A Moon-based radiometer can provide continuous measurements for the Earth's full-disk broadband irradiance, which is useful for studying the Earth's Radiation Budget (ERB) at the height of the Top of the Atmosphere (TOA). The ERB describes how the Earth obtains solar energy and emits energy to space through the outgoing broadband Short-Wave (SW) and emitted thermal Long-Wave (LW) radiation. In this work, a model for estimating the Earth's outgoing radiative flux from the measurements of a Moon-based radiometer is established. Using the model, the full-disk LW and SW outgoing radiative flux are gained by converting the unfiltered entrance pupil irradiances (EPIs) with the help of the anisotropic characteristics of the radiances. Based on the radiative transfer equation, the unfiltered EPI time series is used to validate the established model. By comparing the simulations for a Moon-based radiometer with the satellite-based data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology Advanced Radiometer (NISTAR) and the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) datasets, the simulations show that the daytime SW fluxes from the Moon-based measurements are expected to vary between 194 and 205 Wm−2; these simulations agree well with the CERES data. The simulations are about 5 to 20 Wm−2 smaller than the NISTAR data. For the simulated Moon-based LW fluxes, the range is 251~287 Wm−2. The Moon-based and NISTAR fluxes are consistently 5~15 Wm−2 greater than CERES LW fluxes, and both of them also show larger diurnal variations compared with the CERES fluxes. The correlation coefficients of SW fluxes for Moon-based data and NISTAR data are 0.97, 0.63, and 0.53 for the months of July, August, and September, respectively. Compared with the SW flux, the correlation of LW fluxes is more stable for the same period and the correlation coefficients are 0.87, 0.69, and 0.61 for July to September 2017. Objectives: Since there is only nadir radiometer onboard for the wide-swath altimetry, the wet tropospheric delay can only be corrected by models inside the cross-swath or substituted by the nadir radiometer measured data, which lead to the lower accuracy.Methods: In order to improve the accuracy of wet tropospheric correction (WTC) inside the cross-swath, an optimum interpolation method to fuse the nadir radiometer WTC is proposed, and it is verified by taken the SWOT (surface water and ocean topography) wide-swath altimeter as example. Results: Inside the cross-swath, when the ERA5 (ECMWF reanalysis 5th generation) data are used, the residual of WTC after correction by optimum interpolation method can be reduced by 40% compared with the nadir radiometer WTC substituted. When the simulated WTCs from the spectrum of radiometer measured WTCs are used, the residual of WTC after correction by optimum in⁃ terpolation method can be reduced by 80% in all latitude areas compared with the nadir radiometer WTC substituted.Conclusions: The optimum interpolation method has much better accuracy than the nadir radiometer WTC substituted in the case of high water vapor variability. The procedure for geographic reference of the data of radiometric measurements of the MTVZA-GYa microwave scanner/sounder onboard the Meteor-M No. 2-2 spacecraft is described. Georeferencing is performed on the basis of the information contained in the instrument's measurement data files (in.hdf format) (the observation time of each surface element, common for all frequency channels), as well as the description of the scanning scheme of this instrument, presented in scientific periodicals (sighting angles, scanning speed, etc.). As additional information, necessary to perform the georeferencing operation (orbit parameters, etc.), data freely available on the Internet are used. The georeferencing procedure consists of several sequentially performed operations, including determination of satellite coordinates in the inertial coordinate system, forming observation vectors in the instrumental coordinate system, determining the matrices of direct and inverse transitions for the six used coordinate systems, determination of the coordinates of the observation point in the inertial coordinate system, conversion of the coordinates to the Greenwich coordinate system, etc. In the presented form, it is possible to flexibly configure this operation, taking into account the instability of the orbit spacecraft position, variations in the instrument-scanning speed, instability of setting time stamps, errors in mounting the instrument on the spacecraft, etc. Also, the described georeferencing procedure can be used as part of automated algorithms for processing measurement data and procedures for searching for optimal values of the corrective parameters (for example, the roll, pitch, and yaw angles of the spacecraft and/or instrument). The current solar tower plants demand the measurement of high solar irradiance on the receiver. This measurement would facilitate the operation of the plant, the estimation of the receiver efficiency and would contribute to the safety of the receiver. Nowadays, these plants don't have a system to measure the flux because there are some limitations, as the difficulty to add new elements to the design and the structure of the tower. It is necessary to include a flux measurement system in the planning and construction of the commercial plants. This work presents a validation of the new indirect method to measure the flux which only use the surface of the receiver, a radiometer and a digital camera. In the context of an international project, the new method to measure the flux has been tested with a different receiver and with different working conditions. The receiver tested in this project is a volumetric receiver made of silicon carbide. The flux measurements have been done in the solar tower facility of the Plataforma Solar de Almería, the SSPS-CRS. The results obtained with this system have been compared to the results obtained with the reference flux measurement system based on a white lambertian target, obtaining a good level of agreement. This reference method can't be extrapolated to the commercial plants because it has moving parts that can't be added to the design of the towers. The article presents the results of determining the activity of beta radiation of radon-222 radionuclide using the MKGB-01 radiometer in the atmospheric air of the city of Termez, Surkhandarya region of the Republic of Uzbekistan. 6 samples were taken from different locations and the activity of beta radiation in the MKGB-01 radiometer was determined. Accurate information on tropical cyclone position, intensity, and structure is critical for storm surge prediction. Atmospheric reanalysis datasets can provide gridded, full coverage, long-term and multi-parameter atmospheric fields for the research on the impact of tropical cyclones on the upper ocean, which effectively makes up for the uneven temporal and spatial distribution of satellite remote sensing and in situ data. However, the reanalysis data cannot accurately describe characteristic parameters of tropical cyclones, especially in high wind conditions. In this paper, the performance of the tropical cyclone representation in ERA5 (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5th Generation) is investigated and analyzed with respect to IBTrACS (International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship) during the period 2018–2020. Comparisons demonstrate that ERA5 winds significantly underestimate the maximum wind speed during the tropical cyclones (>30 m/s) compared to those provided by IBTrACS. An effective wind reconstruction method is examined to enhance tropical cyclone intensity representation in reanalysis data in 94 cases of 31 tropical cyclones 2018–2020. The reconstructed wind speeds are in good agreement with the SFMR (Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer) measured data and SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) L-band radiometer remotely sensed measurements. The proposed wind reconstruction method can effectively improve the accuracy of the tropical cyclone representation in ERA5, and will benefit from the establishment of remote sensing satellite retrieval model and the forcing fields of the ocean model. • Normal concentrations of ionized calcium in children differ from adults. • Radiometer instruments record lab results for all analytes independent of the order(s) placed. • Radiometer data can be used to apply exclusion criteria and calculate reference intervals. Measurement of ionized calcium (iCa) reflects bioavailable calcium and has significant utility in children. However, robust pediatric iCa reference intervals (RI) have not been well-established. In this study, we retrospectively calculated RI for iCa in a pediatric population by accessing archived data acquired on Radiometer instruments and applying stringent exclusion criteria. Data saved on 4 Radiometer ABL800 FLEX blood gas analyzers were queried. Exclusion criteria were applied based on information available from these instruments. iCa results were plotted and inflection points were visually identified. Following outlier removal and partition verification, age-specific RI were calculated using a nonparametric rank order approach from > 5,000 individuals. Finally, the stringency of the exclusion criteria was assessed by calculating RI from additional results in the dataset and comparing to existing in-house ranges. Six age-specific iCa partitions were established from 0 to 19 years. Relative to adults, wider ranges for the central 95th percentile were observed early in life that progressively narrowed with increasing age and approached adult concentrations by 2.5 years. Analysis of concurrent data for sodium and creatinine in the dataset suggest the applied exclusion criteria reduced the likelihood of including results from acutely-ill children. Normal concentrations of iCa in children are more variable than adults. Observed differences may reflect the transition from maternally supplied calcium to nutritional sources, the maturation of calcium homeostatic mechanisms, and/or the need for calcium for growth/development. This study also demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of using data archived on Radiometer analyzers to establish pediatric RI. This approach enables rapid, cost-effective evaluation of large datasets and may be a feasible option when prospective or detailed retrospective analyses are not possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is important to monitor the take-off and landing of civil aircraft using passive detection methods. Due to the strict aircraft safety requirements and the electromagnetic environment around an airport, using too many active detection methods should be avoided. Using an aircraft's microwave radiation signal detection is very advantageous because it does not actively emit signals and has a strong cloud penetration, suitable for all-weather observation. This paper introduces a synthetic aperture microwave radiation system for monitoring the take-off and landing of civil aircraft, which is characterized by real-time two-dimensional imaging, and the image refresh rate can reach 10 ms, which meets the high refresh rate requirements for aircraft imaging. Applicable system parameters and antenna array distribution scheme and imaging algorithm are given. Then the paper focuses on the error analysis and correction method of the system. The correction method is simple and fast, which avoids the disadvantage that the error needs to be corrected regularly in the laboratory environment, and is suitable for airport application. Finally, the simulation and experimental results show that this technology can be used for real-time monitoring of civil aircraft during take-off and landing, and it is a practical means to assisting landing. The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission includes a unique combination of instruments intended to provide daily global soil moisture data with high accuracy and resolution. Due to radar instrument failure, the default resolution of the data product decreased from the intended 9 km to 36 km shortly after the mission started to return data. To improve this, we employed the Scatterometer Image Reconstruction algorithm in its radiometer form (rSIR) to enhance the resolution of the radiometer brightness temperature measurements from which the soil moisture was derived. This paper compares the soil moisture estimates created from the rSIR-enhanced brightness temperatures with SMAP project radiometer L2_SM_SP and SMAP-Sentinel L2_SM_P products reported on 9 km and 3 km grids, respectively. We find that the difference of the rSIR-enhanced passive soil moisture product is generally within 0.020 cm 3 cm − 3 RMS of the 9 km SMAP radiometer L2_SM_SP and 0.045 cm 3 cm − 3 RMS of the 3 km SMAP-Sentinel L2_SM_P soil moisture products. The accuracy of the rSIR soil moisture can be improved by including better antenna pattern correction methods applied to the input TB measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Earth's radiation budget (ERB), measured at the top of the atmosphere (TOP), quantifies the radiation imbalance between the Earth–atmosphere system and space. The ERB's measurement accuracy depends on the observation system's design and calibration technology. Fitting regional scanning data from polar satellite payloads is the most common way to obtain the global radiation budget. Additionally, the radiometers are calibrated by onboard stable radiation sources. We propose a new ERB radiometer operating at the Lagrange L1 point of the Earth–Moon system, which has the characteristic of observing the Earth and Moon on a hemispheric spatial scale. Hence, earth-integrated radiation can be measured directly. Furthermore, the Moon is used as a natural source for on-orbit calibration, and the attenuation of the instrument is monitored and corrected through periodic observations. This paper presents the concept of the radiometer and focuses on the design and analysis of the radiometer's observation systems based on optical design and stray radiation suppression. The results show that the system has good imaging quality. The external stray radiation suppression reached an order of 10−8, and the thermal stray radiation can be eliminated by temperature control and compensation. Global warming causes the replacement of lichens by shrubs in alpine and Arctic ecosystems. Since shrubs have lower albedo than lichens, this shrub encroachment can lead to a positive climatic feedback, resulting in higher temperatures in the surroundings. Therefore, gaining knowledge on the surface albedo of shrubs and lichens is important. Environmental factors also influence the surface albedo, but have often been neglected, potentially leading to biased results. In an experimental setup, we analyzed albedos of the lichen species Cladonia stellaris, Flavocetraria nivalis and Cetraria islandica, and how albedo changes with a stepwise replacement by the dwarf shrub Empetrum nigrum. Albedo was measured with radiometers in a paired set up. By setting certain environmental variables and species composition (monocultures) to be constant, we quantified the impact of environmental factors such as cloud cover, aspect and zenith angle on the surface albedo of two lichen species. Surface albedo (mean values ± SD) differed between C. islandica (0.155 ± 0.015), C. stellaris (0.364 ± 0.019), F. nivalis (0.350 ± 0.022) and E. nigrum (0.154 ± 0.016), and an increase in shrub cover at the expense of lichen cover led to a corresponding decrease in albedo. A 0.6 reduction in clearness index (more clouds) produced a 0.054 albedo decline. On the north‐facing aspect, albedo was 0.023 lower than on the south‐facing aspect. Albedo increased by 0.032 with an increase in zenith angle of 15°. Albedo variations caused by these studied environmental factors significantly affect the radiation budget of alpine and Arctic vegetation. We therefore stress the importance of considering environmental factors when surface albedos are estimated. Likewise, our species‐specific measurements can be a basis for further studies of the impact of climate change on alpine and Arctic vegetation and species‐related feedback mechanisms. The Japanese MMX sample return mission to Phobos by JAXA will carry a rover developed by CNES and DLR that will be deployed on Phobos to perform in situ analysis of the Martian moon's surface properties. Past images of the surface of Phobos show that it is covered by a layer of regolith. However, the mechanical and compositional properties of this regolith are poorly constrained. In particular, from current remote images, very little is known regarding the particle sizes, their chemical composition, the packing density of the regolith as well as other parameters such as friction and cohesion that influence surface dynamics. Understanding the properties and dynamics of the regolith in the low-gravity environment of Phobos is important to trace back its history and surface evolution. Moreover, this information is also important to support the interpretation of data obtained by instruments onboard the main MMX spacecraft, and to minimize the risks involved in the spacecraft sampling operations. The instruments onboard the Rover are a Raman spectrometer (RAX), an infrared radiometer (miniRad), two forward-looking cameras for navigation and science purposes (NavCams), and two cameras observing the interactions of regolith and the rover wheels (WheelCams). The Rover will be deployed before the MMX spacecraft samples Phobos' surface and will be the first rover to drive on the surface of a Martian moon and in a very low gravity environment. This paper presents measurements using a dual-polarised radiometer operating at 93 GHz to detect ice or water on asphalt in laboratory conditions. The brightness temperatures of both H and V polarizations were measured for a dry surface, liquid water, and ice on asphalt at observation angles of 50° and 56°. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that the studied road conditions can be identified by the radiometer. The measurements are compared with a model and surface parameters, such as dielectric constant and roughness are fitted and compared to reference values. The experiments and results, described in this article, are the first steps towards the future installation of a polarimetric sensor on a moving vehicle for traffic safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems Technology Demonstration (TEMPEST-D) instrument is a five-frequency millimeter-wave radiometer operating from 87 to 181 GHz. The cross-track scanning radiometer has been operating on a 6U CubeSat in low Earth orbit since September 5, 2018. The direct-detection architecture of the radiometer reduces its mass and power consumption by eliminating the need for a local oscillator and mixer, also reducing system complexity. The instrument includes a scanning reflector and ambient calibration target. The reflector rotates continuously to scan the antenna beams in the cross-track direction, first across the blackbody calibration target, then toward the Earth over the full range of incidence angles, and finally to cosmic microwave background radiation at 2.73 K. This enables precision end-to-end calibration of the millimeter-wave receivers during every 2-s scan period. The TEMPEST-D millimeter-wave radiometers are based on 35-nm indium phosphide (InP) high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) low-noise amplifiers. An active–passive microwave retrieval algorithm for simultaneous determination of soil surface roughness parameters [vertical root-mean-square (RMS) height (${s}$) and horizontal correlation length (${l}$)] is presented for bare soils. The algorithm is based on active–passive microwave covariation, including the improved Integral Equation Method (I2EM), and is tested with global soil moisture active passive (SMAP) observations. The estimated retrieval results for ${s}$ and ${l}$ are overall consistent with values in the literature, indicating the validity of the proposed algorithm. Sensitivity analyses showed that the developed roughness retrieval algorithm is independent of permittivity for ${\varepsilon }_{s} > 10$ [-]. Furthermore, the physical model basis of this approach (I2EM) allows the application of different autocorrelation functions (ACF), such as Gaussian and exponential ACFs. Global roughness retrieval results confirm bare areas in deserts such as Sahara or Gobi. However, the type of ACF used within roughness parameter estimation is important. Retrieval results for the Gaussian ACF describe a rougher surface than retrieval results for the exponential ACF. No correlations were found between roughness results and the amount of precipitation or the soil texture, which could be due to the coarse spatial resolution of the SMAP data. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite was launched in 1997, and the observations continued for more than 17 years. The features of TRMM observation were as follows: (a) it followed a non-sun synchronized orbit that enabled the diurnal variation of precipitation to be investigated; (b) it carried a precipitation radar and microwave and infrared radiometers, along with two instruments of opportunity in the form of a lighting sensor and a radiation budget sensor; and (c) it worked as a standard reference for precipitation measurements for other spaceborne microwave radiometers, which enabled global rain maps to be developed. For science, TRMM provided precise and accurate rain distributions over tropical and subtropical regions. The rainfall results are primarily essential for the study of precipitation climatologies, whereas the three-dimensional images of precipitation systems enabled the study of the global characteristics of precipitation systems. Technologically, the spaceborne rain radar onboard TRMM demonstrated the effectiveness of radars in space, whereas the combination with other rain observation instruments showed its effectiveness as a calibration source. Multi-satellite rain maps in which TRMM was the reference standard have been developed, and they became prototypes of the multi-satellite Earth observation systems. On the basis of the great success of TRMM, the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) was designed to expand TRMM's coverage to higher latitudes. The core satellite of GPM is equipped with a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) and a microwave radiometer. DPR comprises a Kuband radar (KuPR) and a Ka-band radar (KaPR) and can discriminate solid from liquid precipitation. The period of the precipitation measurement with spaceborne radars extended to more than 23 years, which may make it possible to detect the change of precipitation climatology related to change in the global environment. Image reconstruction from discrete samples is fundamental in remote sensing. The reconstruction problem is more complicated when the sample locations are irregularly spaced and employ different aperture functions. Further, not all 2-D sampling configurations permit full image reconstruction of band-limited signals. In this article, 2-D signal reconstruction from irregular samples with variable apertures is considered using theory and examples. Exact reconstruction requires that the signal be band-limited and the sampling matrix be invertable. The results are sensitive to the sample locations and noise in the measurements. Emergency department presentations of sodium nitrate poisoning are increasing in frequency. Point-of-care blood gas analysis is useful for identifying methaemoglobinaemia and other abnormalities in such patients. Topically applied nitrate is known to positively interfere with chloride measurement in both point-of-care instruments and automated analysers of the clinical chemistry laboratory. In this article, the authors describe a case of pseudohyperchloraemia caused by sodium nitrate, which was consumed orally for the purpose of suicide. Consistent with the established pattern of interference, the ABL800 (Radiometer Medical, Brønshøj Copenhagen) blood gas analyser produced spuriously high chloride results, whilst the Alinity (Abbott Diagnostics, Abbot Park, Illinois) automated analyser resulted in chloride measurements comparable to those of inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Both instruments, measure chloride with ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). The ABL800 (Radiometer) uses a membrane electrode, which is vulnerable to permeation by lipophilic nitrate ions, whereas the Alinity (Abbott) employs a silver chloride redox electrode system that is resistant to precipitation of silver nitrate due to its relatively high solubility. In the application of ultraviolet (UV light), it is necessary to obtain reliable information on UV effectiveness, i.e., one should know the fluence reached by microorganisms or the dose absorbed by chemicals. For this reason, a collimated beam apparatus (CBA) is widely used. International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) recommends a protocol on CBA in which the beams are assumed to be collimated. In this work, focusing on the fact that so-called collimated beams are not really collimated, a mathematical model for CBA is established, and the influencing factors and specifications of CBA are rigorously analyzed. The aperture type not only has high measurement accuracy, but its specific characteristics are also suitable for the calibration of radiometers in chemical actinometers. Crookes radiometers have been the subject of numerous theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies because of the complicated forces they exhibit as well as their potential applications to light sensing and actuation. The majority of these studies have focused on classical radiometers, which function under low vacuum pressures. In contrast, here we report a radiometer with microengineered vanes that rotates at atmospheric pressure. Its functionality at pressures thousands of times higher than previous light mills is due to unique attributes of the nanocardboard that forms its vanes: 1) the extremely low areal density (0.1 mg/cm2) of nanocardboard reduces the vane masses by two orders of magnitude; 2) its lower thermal conductivity allows a greater cross-vane temperature difference; and 3) its microchannels dramatically increase the thermal transpiration flow that drives the rotation. Intriguingly, the experimentally observed rotation speeds are substantially higher than those theoretically expected. The methodology for integrated ground-based and satellite monitoring of atmospheric aerosols is discussed. An algorithm for processing data from coordinated lidar and radiometric sensing (LRS) is described. The algorithm was tested by studying aerosol parameter altitude profiles in the vicinity of AERONET stations using data from ground-based solar radiometers and CALIOP satellite lidar. Coordinated measurements with AERONET network radiometers and ground-based multiwavelength lidars at remote sensing stations of the Institute of Physics, NASB (Minsk, Belarus), Institute of Atmospheric Optics, SB, RAS (Tomsk, Russia), and KRSU (Teploklyuchenka, Kyrgyzstan) were used to verify the satellite sensing results. Solar diffusers (SDs) have often been used as the onboard calibrators for the radiometric calibration of reflective solar band imaging sensors. After being spaceborne, the reflectance of SDs is observed to degrade with spectral dependence due to exposure to solar UV and energetic particle radiation. Long-term spectral reflectance data of SDs onboard multiple LEO imaging sensors, such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on SNPP, are analyzed. The reflectance of SDs on these three instruments degrades faster for the shorter wavelength (0.4– $0.6~\mu \text{m}$) bands than the longer wavelength bands. The Surface Roughness-induced Rayleigh Scattering (SRRS) model is applied to simulate the SD degradation on these instruments, and the growth of the surface roughness parameter of the SDs is derived. It is determined that the change of surface roughness scale length is ~tens of nanometers. To show the consistency of roughness growth rates among the SDs on Terra/Aqua MODIS and SNPP VIIRS instruments, the functional dependences of the growth rates are characterized according to the SD exposure time and the stage of surface roughness. It is also found that the flattening or reverse in the growth trend of the surface roughness for these three SDs occurred around the same interval between October 2013 and October 2015. The confirmation of the applicability of SRRS model with the long-term spectral reflectance data from three independent spaceborne SDs facilitates a better understanding of the origin and physical processes of the SD degradation. Temporal and spatial variation of sea ice type in the Arctic is an indicator of regional and global change. Arctic sea ice can be classified into two major categories: multiyear ice (MYI) and first-year ice. In this paper, classification method based on machine learning is established and applied to produce daily sea ice classification data set during the winter (November–April) from 2002 to 2017 using active microwave data from QuikSCAT and Advanced Scatterometer as well as passive microwave data from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS, Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder, and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 radiometer. First, the open water area is flagged out using brightness temperature (Tb) from the passive microwave sensor. Then, K-means algorithm is applied to identify the clusters of the two ice types in the Tb/backscatter parameter space and finally assign pixels to each class. Two optimization methods based on the movement of MYI and marginal ice zone are used to correct the misclassification of MYI. The results have shown a decrease of MYI in winter from 2002 to 2017, especially in 2008 and 2013 with a remarkable recovery in 2014. The classifications are consistent with results by visual interpretation from synthetic aperture radar images in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago with overall classification accuracy over 93%. Comparison with classifications from previous studies and products shows that our method could reflect more differences in MYI declining trend interannually and less anomalous fluctuations in certain years. Abstract The current thermoelectric solar tower plants demand the measure of high solar irradiance on the receiver. Its measure would facilitate the operation of the plant and would contribute to a greater receiver security. Currently, solar tower plants do not have a flux measurement system in their receiver as it is not considered in their design. The inclusion of the flux measurement system in its design phase would facilitate its incorporation and correct operation. Instead, infrared temperature measurement systems are used to infer the irradiance on the receiver. This procedure is not suitable since the delay between the irradiance and the temperature in the receiver can reach a few minutes depending on the materials, the transfer fluid, the operating conditions and the meteorological variables. Traditional flux measurement methods, used during the evaluation of small solar receiver prototypes, turn to moving parts that do not extrapolate to large receivers of commercial solar tower plants due to scaling problems. On the other hand, the use of mobile elements, which interact with the concentrated solar radiation directed towards the receiver, would negatively affect the daily operation of the plant. This work presents a simple method that allows characterizing a large target and quantifying its degree of homogeneity and diffusivity. With favourable information about receiver diffusivity, a way of proceeding to measure directly high solar irradiance on the surface of the receivers of solar tower plants without including moving parts is presented. A new multilayer (ML) cloud detection algorithm based on three shortwave infrared (SWIR) and two longwave infrared (LWIR) channels is developed and applied to the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard the Suomi-NPP satellite. The algorithm identifies ML clouds, i.e., ice clouds overlying water clouds, based on satellite multispectral observations in the 1.38, 1.6, 2.25, 8.5, and 11 μm channels. We perform synthetic radiative transfer simulations to understand the sensitivities of the aforementioned channels on ML and single-layer (SL) clouds. Active CALIOP observations are used to evaluate the algorithm. Compared with the collocated CALIOP results, the algorithm can determine SL and ML clouds correctly with success rates of approximately 80% and 60%, respectively, and has similar performance to that of the current MODIS operational ML cloud detection algorithm. The misclassification of ML clouds as SL clouds is primarily caused by thin ice clouds that are practically undetectable using LWIR tests. Active and passive microwave signals over land co-vary depending on their shared scattering and emission characteristics by soil and vegetation media. Estimates of this covariation can be used beneficially to downscale coarse-resolution brightness temperatures with high-resolution backscatter for enhanced-resolution Earth observations. In this study, a forward model of covariation for vegetated soil is derived by combining two well-established models of active and passive microwave interactions. The covariation model is inverted to obtain a single-pass observation-driven estimation of active-passive microwave covariation (β) based on multi-channel radiometer and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) scenes. A key feature of the estimation approach is that it is applicable to co-located spatial data scenes and does not rely on temporal information. We present applications of the estimation with combinations of SMAP (L-band) radiometry and both SMAP (L-band) and multi-angular Sentinel-1 (C-band) backscatter data. We first show that for the period of available SMAP L-band radiometer and radar data, the estimation approach for β , introduced in this study, yields similar results as the statistical time-series approach originally designed for SMAP. The new single-pass approach also allows estimation of active-passive covariation where the statistical approach cannot be applied because dynamic range of brightness temperature and backscatter are too limited to allow regression. We then apply the developed estimation method to SMAP L-band radiometer and multi-angular Sentinel-1 C-band SAR data. A low noise, high gain, stable radiometer front-end is presented for non-invasive tissue thermometry using custom designed narrow band low noise amplifiers (LNAs) and band pass filter (BPF) with 1.3 GHz centre frequency and − 20 dB pass band of 332 MHz. The fabricated LNAs have >15 dB gain, unconditional gain stability and noise figure (NF) < 1.45 dB in the pass band. The maximum insertion loss of the BPF is <1 dB over 1.2-1.4 GHz with 50 dB suppression in the surrounding communication bands. The cascaded radiometer front-end has measured gain of 45-50 dB, NF < 1.75 dB in the pass band and > 30 dB suppression in the adjacent personal communication bands. The Allan deviation of the total power radiometer indicates long term system stability and presence of Gaussian thermal noise for integration time, . Radiometer measurements of a matched load at room temperature for indicate acceptably low influence of external electromagnetic interference (EMI) and system noise equivalent temperature of 145 K. The brightness temperature measured by the total power radiometer using a resonant slot antenna demonstrates the ability to detect a 0.3°C change in the test load temperature with better than 0.1°C accuracy. Active and passive low-frequency microwave measurements from a number of space- and airborne instruments are used to estimate soil moisture. Each of the sensing approaches has distinct advantages and disadvantages. There is increasing interest in combining active and passive measurements in order to realize the advantages and alleviate the disadvantages. In order to combine active and passive measurements, their covariations with respect to soil moisture need to be known. The covariation is dependent on how the active and passive microwaves interact with vegetation canopy and soil surface. In this paper, we introduce a physics-based model for the covariation of active and passive microwaves over soil surfaces with vegetation cover. The analytical form for a covariation function is derived which depends on the scattering and absorption of microwaves by soil and vegetation with different orientations, structures, and water contents. The main finding is that the covariation function $\beta $ is related to the roughness and vegetation losses in the two measurements. An increase in soil roughness or in vegetation cover leads to less negative values of $\beta $ , which is pronounced for dense and moist vegetation. Both the soil and vegetation components introduce a polarization dependence of $\beta $ that is caused by polarization-induced differences in soil scattering and oriented plant structures. The forward modeled covariations are plotted together with statistically derived covariation estimates from two months of global active and passive L-band observations of the Soil Moisture Active Passive mission. Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the experimental measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy of the microwave emissions of a rough water surface. The experimental data were obtained using microwave radiometers with operating frequencies of ~37 GHz (a wavelength of ~8 mm) on the oceanographic platform of the Black Sea Hydrophysical Experimental Facility of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the period from 2005 to 2016. This paper describes the azimuthal anisotropy effect, experimental studies, measurement methods, and data processing. A qualitative comparison of the measurement results with the model calculations and other experimental studies of anisotropy was performed. It was shown that there is a strong sensitivity of the variation in the radio emissions of a rough water surface, both to the wind speed and to its direction at different incidence observation angles. Abstract: This paper presents the functional dependence of the microwave emission of a rough water surface at a frequency of 37.5 GHz (wavelength of ~8 mm). The MiROSE model (Microwave Rough Ocean Surface Emission model) is based on the experimental studies of the own thermal radio emission of the water surface, which were carried out in 2005 and 2007 on the oceanographic platform of the Black Sea Hydrophysical Experimental Facility of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This paper demonstrates the steps of the simulation for selecting the optimal functions to describe the incident angle, wind, and temperature dependences of the increment of the own water surface emission. The following parameters can be calculated on the basis of the proposed model: the increment of the brightness temperature, radio-brightness contrast, and radio-brightness temperature for horizontal and vertical polarizations of the received emission. A high-resolution dual-band terahertz (THz) radiometer was designed to measure vertical distributions of chemical elements in the middle atmosphere of the Tibetan Plateau. A forward simulation, which always should be conducted firstly for the development of a matching retrieval algorithm, has not been done before. We use two radiative transfer models, ARTS and AM, to simulate the water vapor, ozone and carbon monoxide spectra on the plateau based on the spectral design of the THz radiometer. The emission line characteristics of the three gases in this spectral band are identified. Reasons for the differences in the spectral simulations between the two models are analyzed for individual gases. The impact of several different spectral parameter settings on the simulations are evaluated through a series of sensitivity experiments. This study suggests that the ARTS is more suitable for the development of the THz radiometer retrieval algorithm. An optimal parameter setting of the ARTS for the three elements are given. Solar UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface is known to have various effects on human health and on the ecosystem. Ground-based measurements of surface UV radiation are spatially sparse and in many cases do not provide long time series. Higher spatial coverage can be provided by measurements from satellite based instruments, but these measurements need to be compared to ground-based measurements of sufficient quality before they can be used in health and ecosystem applications. Here, we compare the measurements of surface solar UV radiation in UVA (315–400 nm) and UVB (280–315 nm) bands with the satellite retrievals (CERES) and validate the latter at an urban location, Delhi, India. We have also used MODIS-retrieved aerosol optical depth (AOD) and cloud optical depth (COD) data to see the effect of atmospheric opacity on UV radiation. Ground-based measurements of UVA and UVB were performed from 01 October, 2012 to 30 September, 2015. Correlations between daily surface measurements and CERES-derived surface UV fluxes showed very good agreement (r ∼ 0.92–0.93) over Delhi. We found a negative correlation between UV fluxes and AOD over Delhi during all seasons. A unit increase in AOD leads to a decrease of ∼4–5 Wm -2 in UVA and ∼0.09–0.14 Wm -2 in UVB over Delhi. The trend analysis from monthly mean CERES-derived UV fluxes for 17 years data reveals that UVA and UVB are decreasing ∼0.07 Wm -2 yr −1 and 0.003 Wm -2 yr −1 , respectively with AOD increase (∼0.005 yr −1 ) over Delhi. The simultaneous increase in aerosol loading with decrease in UV fluxes at the surface may be explained as a masking effect of ever increasing pollution on surface UV radiation over Delhi. This paper describes a novel cost effective narrow-beam radiometer what was designed to measure incident heat flux at a specific location in high temperature and high pressure combustor. Beyond the radiometer the whole measurement assembly contains a water cooled plate for cold background, a high pressure window transparent for visible and IR radiation and a radiometer position/angle adjustment tool. The thermopile based radiometer measures the total heat radiation in a wavelength range of 0.6–8 µm. A special view tube was developed for decreasing the view angle to 0.35°, what angle was dictated by the dimensions of the combustor and the associated port sizes. Calibration curves were measured using a high temperature black body calibrator and the uncertainty of the measurement was evaluated. The Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) is a suite of environmental sensors onboard NASA’s Mars 2020 mission. The Thermal InfraRed Sensor (TIRS), developed at Centro de Astrobiología of Spain, is one of the six sensors comprising MEDA, and it will measure the net thermal infrared radiation and reflected solar radiation at the surface, as well as the atmospheric and surface skin temperatures using five different channels. In combination with MEDA's other sensors, TIRS will allow the quantification of the surface energy budget and the determination of key geophysical properties of the terrain such as the albedo and thermal inertia. Here we present a general description of the TIRS, its channels scientific requirements, and the mechanical and thermal design. Then, a detailed sensor mathematical model and a sensitivity analysis to model uncertainties are described. Some characterization test results to model parameters identification are included. Finally, accuracy and resolution calculus for each channel versus operational temperature is presented. To improve the thermal modelling of high power isotope separation on-line (ISOL) targets at TRIUMF, an optical technique is being developed that allows for direct off-line and on-line temperature measurements of targets for radioactive isotope production. In this setup the light coming from a hot target through the ionizer opening is collected via a set of optics and coupled into a spectrometer. Thus, from the emission spectrum and Planck's law, the target temperature can be deduced. Tantalum targets were heated to high temperatures and preliminary temperature measurements confirm the correlation between the spectrum of the radiation emitted from the target and the currents used to resistively heat the targets. The final goal is to apply this technique to on-line targets and correlate the isotope releases with the target temperatures for a better understanding of the diffusion and effusion processes happening in the target and for optimizing the delivery of short-lived species. A wideband (30% relative bandwidth) correlation and detection module based on substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology intended for a radio astronomy polarimeter is presented. The SIW circuit is a six-port network with two input ports that are correlated in two hybrid couplers and their corresponding output signals are routed to Schottky diode detectors, which are designed using microstrip technology and assembled within the same system. The designed SIW structure includes hybrid couplers, power dividers, a 90° phase shifter, and 90° bends, providing a real implementation of a functional system with improved bandwidth performance from 35 to 47 GHz. Predictable quantum efficient detectors (PQEDs), based on photoelectric effect in silicon semiconductor, have proved their potential as optical radiant power primary standard. At present, simulations for semiconductor devices are the common method to predict the response of a PQED. As an alternative, this work investigates the feasibility of an experimental technique, the self-calibration of silicon photodiodes at room temperature by means of temperature sensors. A device which compares two physics principles by optical power, working both as a photodetector and a radiometer based on electrical substitution, was made. The device allows for measuring the current generated under irradiation (in photocurrent mode) and the heating of the system, induced by a laser or forward biasing, to determine the optical power (in thermal mode). The feasibility study consists of testing the equivalence between both modes and establishing the suitable range of optical power. The range of optimum optical power level, where both modes run in the linear domain at the present configuration, is from 300 µW up to 1 mW. Digital cross-correlation is central to many applications including but not limited to Digital Image Processing, Satellite Navigation and Remote Sensing. With recent advancements in digital technology, the computational demands of such applications have increased enormously. In this paper we are presenting a high throughput digital cross correlator, capable of processing 1-bit digitized stream, at the rate of up to 2 GHz, simultaneously on 64 channels i.e., approximately 4 Trillion correlation and accumulation operations per second. In order to achieve higher throughput, we have focused on frequency based partitioning of our design and tried to minimize and localize high frequency operations. This correlator is designed for a Passive Millimeter Wave Imager intended for the detection of contraband items concealed on human body. The goals are to increase the system bandwidth, achieve video rate imaging, improve sensitivity and reduce the size. Design methodology is detailed in subsequent sections, elaborating the techniques enabling high throughput. The design is verified for Xilinx Kintex UltraScale device in simulation and the implementation results are given in terms of device utilization and power consumption estimates. A correlation analysis of the model calculations and experimental measurements of wind-speed sensitivity of a rough sea-surface microwave emission at a frequency of 37.5 GHz are presented. The field data used in the research were collected over 3 years in the summer and autumn periods at the oceanographic platform of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). A hypothesis about a significant correlation between the model calculations and experimentally measured sea-surface emission ability caused by wind forcing was formulated and tested to reveal this correlation. An evaluation of the discrepancy between the model and experimental data has been performed by an analysis of residuals. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) reflective solar bands (RSBs) are calibrated on-orbit using a solar diffuser (SD) with its degradation tracked by an onboard SD stability monitor (SDSM). The SDSM has nine detectors with wavelengths from 0.41 to 0.94 \mu \textm . It is operated during each scheduled SD calibration event, making alternate observations of the sun and the SD. Due to erroneous design parameters, which led to the misalignment of the key elements in the SDSM, there are significant ripples in the sun view responses as the solar viewing angle changes. At the mission beginning, the effect of the ripples was eliminated by normalizing each SDSM detector response to the response of detector 9 (D9) at 0.94 \mu \textm , assuming that D9 had no degradation. However, D9 degradation increases over MODIS operation times. Degradation of up to 2% has recently been observed in D9 for the Terra MODIS. A newly implemented approach reduces the sun view ripples using a lookup table constructed using SDSM data carefully selected from a short period early in the mission lifetime. In this paper, we provide an overview of different approaches that have been applied over the years by the MODIS Characterization Support Team to track the on-orbit SD degradation. We evaluate the overall SD and SDSM on-orbit performance for both Terra and Aqua MODIS, as well as the impact on the MODIS RSB calibration uncertainty. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Collocated observations from microwave radiometer and wind profiler are used in a pilot study during the monsoon period to derive information on the thermodynamics and winds and association with rainfall characteristics. These instruments were operated throughout the monsoon season of 2015. Continuous vertical profiles of winds, temperature and humidity show significant promise for understanding the low-level jet, its periodicity and its association with moisture transport, clouds and precipitation embedded within the monsoon large-scale convection. Observations showed mutually beneficial in explaining variability that are part of the low frequency oscillations and the diurnal variability during monsoon. These observations highlight the importance of locally driven convective systems, in the presence of weak moisture transport over the area. The episodic moisture convergence showed a periodicity of 9 days which matches with the subsequent convection and precipitation and thermodynamic regimes. Inferences from the diurnal cycle of moisture transport and the convective activity, relationship with the low-level jet characteristics and thermodynamics are also illustrated. The evolving mise en pratique for the definition of the kelvin (MeP-K) [1, 2] will, in its forthcoming edition, encourage the realization and dissemination of the thermodynamic temperature either directly (primary thermometry) or indirectly (relative primary thermometry) via fixed points with assigned reference thermodynamic temperatures. In the last years, the Centro Español de Metrología (CEM), in collaboration with the Instituto de Óptica of Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (IO-CSIC), has developed several setups for absolute calibration of standard radiation thermometers using the radiance method to allow CEM the direct dissemination of the thermodynamic temperature and the assignment of the thermodynamic temperatures to several fixed points. Different calibration facilities based on a monochromator and/or a laser and an integrating sphere have been developed to calibrate CEM's standard radiation thermometers (KE-LP2 and KE-LP4) and filter radiometer (FIRA2). This system is based on the one described in [3] placed in IO-CSIC. Different light sources have been tried and tested for measuring absolute spectral radiance responsivity: a Xe-Hg 500 W lamp, a supercontinuum laser NKT SuperK-EXR20 and a diode laser emitting at 6473 nm with a typical maximum power of 120 mW. Their advantages and disadvantages have been studied such as sensitivity to interferences generated by the laser inside the filter, flux stability generated by the radiant sources and so forth. This paper describes the setups used, the uncertainty budgets and the results obtained for the absolute temperatures of Cu, Co-C, Pt-C and Re-C fixed points, measured with the three thermometers with central wavelengths around 650 nm. The MASCOT radiometer MARA is a multi-spectral instrument which measures net radiative flux in six wavelength bands. MARA uses thermopile sensors as sensing elements, and the net flux between the instrument and the surface in the $18^{\circ }$ field of view is determined by evaluating the thermoelectric potential between the sensors' absorbing surface and the thermopile's cold-junction. MARA houses 4 bandpass channels in the spectral range of 5.5-7, 8-9.5, 9.5-11.5, and 13.5-15.5 μm, as well as one long-pass channel, which is sensitive in the $>3~\upmu \mbox{m}$ range. In addition, one channel is similar to that used by the Hayabusa 2 orbiter thermal mapper, which uses a wavelength range of 8-12 μm. The primary science objective of the MARA instrument it the determination of the target asteroid's surface brightness temperature, from which surface thermal inertia can be derived. In addition, the spectral bandpass channels will be used to estimate the spectral slope of the surface in the thermal infrared wavelength range. The instrument has been calibrated using a cavity blackbody, and the temperature uncertainty is 1 K in the long pass channel for target temperatures of $>173~\mbox{K}$ .
