When we ask people to tell us the story of their lives, it is not the full extent of their biographies that we have access to, but only a partial version of it. Biographical narratives are permeated by processes of selection that imply highlighting some things while omitting others. Most of the time, what is left unsaid cannot be fully acknowledged, precisely because it is not explicitly verbalised. In the scope of the research project Biographical echoes, we were able to identify significant events and relationships in a person's life that were not disclosed in autobiographical accounts but were unveiled in hetero-biographical ones by close people who were interviewed about that person's life. The triangulation of data allowed us to access elements of a biography that would otherwise have remained unseen. By taking omissions as units of analysis, we characterised their main features and identified three distinct profiles of omissions using a Multiple Correspondence Analysis: relational, light and taboo. We argue that the act of omitting something is a meaningful social action with implications at both the biographical and analytical levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parler de sexualité dans une institution de soins n'est pas chose aisée dans la mesure où cela contribue au dévoilement des postures subjectives et culturelles des professionnels, dans des contextes encore marqués par l'absence ou les lacunes de formation professionnelle à ce sujet. Parler de sexualité peut aussi mettre en danger ou en cause l'institution. Cet article propose une analyse secondaire de ce qui se présente comme une forme d'« ethnographie clinique ». Les matériaux mobilisés dans ce travail ont été recueillis en 1996–1997, dans le contexte d'une situation de crise suscitée par la révélation de relations sexuelles illicites entre un éducateur-chef et une jeune femme désignée comme handicapée mentale, dans une institution de soins. C'est au cours d'une intervention psychosociologique menée en réponse à une demande de la direction de l'établissement que des professionnels de différentes catégories ont pu s'exprimer sur ces « événements » et aborder de façon plus générale les questions liées à la sexualité dans l'établissement. Les séances de travail animées par l'auteur de l'étude et une assistante de recherche psychanalyste ont fait l'objet d'une prise de notes et ont été retranscrites pour être ensuite restituées aux participants. L'analyse de contenu thématique des retranscriptions des séances a permis de mieux comprendre les obstacles psycho-sociaux à la communication sur la sexualité, les difficultés subjectives liées à la prise de parole, les phénomènes de négation de la sexualité ainsi que les représentations de la sexualité en situation institutionnelle. Les documents discutés ici invitent à la réflexion sur la complexité du recueil d'informations et de récits sur la sexualité, explorent les processus de communication et notamment les difficultés à communiquer autour des questions de sexualité et d'abus sexuels dans des institutions du secteur sanitaire et social. Ce travail propose des pistes de travail clinique d'accompagnement des équipes concernées et confrontées à des événements traumatiques et aux difficultés personnelles et professionnelles qui surgissent de ces situations. Talking about sexuality in a health care institution is not an easy task insofar as it contributes to the disclosing of the subjective and cultural postures of professionals, in contexts still marked by the absence or lack of professional training on this subject. Talking about sexuality can also endanger or challenge the institution. This paper presents a secondary analysis of what is presented as a form of "clinical ethnography." The materials used in this study were collected in 1996-1997, in the context of a crisis situation caused by the revelation of illicit sexual relations between a head special educator and a young woman labelled as mentally handicapped, in a care institution. In the course of a psychosociological intervention carried out in response to a request from the management of the institution, professionals from different categories were able to express themselves on these "events" and to address, more generally, issues related to sexuality in the institution. The sessions, moderated by the author of the study and a psychoanalytic research assistant, were recorded and transcribed for subsequent feedback to participants. The thematic content analysis of the transcripts of the sessions allowed for a better understanding of the psychosocial obstacles to communication about sexuality, the subjective difficulties related to speaking out, the phenomena of denial of sexuality, as well as the representations of sexuality in institutional situations. The documents discussed here invite reflection on the complexity of collecting information and stories about sexuality in institutional settings. They explore communication processes and, in particular, the difficulties of communicating about sexuality and sexual abuse in institutions in the health and social sector. This study suggests ways in which clinical support can be provided to teams affected by and confronted with traumatic events and the personal and professional difficulties that may arise from such situations. Objective: Responsible media reporting is an accepted strategy for preventing suicide. In 2015, suicide prevention experts launched a media engagement initiative aimed at improving suicide-related reporting in Canada; its impact on media reporting quality and suicide deaths is unknown. Method: This pre–post observational study examined changes in reporting characteristics in a random sample of suicide-related articles from major publications in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) media market. Articles (n = 900) included 450 from the 6-year periods prior to and after the initiative began. We also examined changes in suicide counts in the GTA between these epochs. We used chi-square tests to analyse changes in reporting characteristics and time-series analyses to identify changes in suicide counts. Secondary outcomes focused on guidelines developed by media professionals in Canada and how they may have influenced media reporting quality as well as on the overarching narrative of media articles during the most recent years of available data. Results: Across-the-board improvement was observed in suicide-related reporting with substantial reductions in many elements of putatively harmful content and substantial increases in all aspects of putatively protective content. However, overarching article narratives remained potentially harmful with 55.2% of articles telling the story of someone's death and 20.8% presenting an other negative message. Only 3.6% of articles told a story of survival. After controlling for potential confounders, a nonsignificant numeric decrease in suicide counts was identified after initiative implementation (ω = −5.41, SE = 3.43, t = 1.58, p = 0.12). Conclusions: We found evidence that a strategy to engage media in Canada changed the content of reporting, but there was only a nonsignificant trend towards fewer suicides. While studies of femicide perpetrators have focused on background factors, such as criminal history and mental health conditions, little attention has been paid to their individual experiences. Perpetrators emotions and sense-making have often been overlooked and even dismissed. With a micro-sociological approach to violence, we identify the narrated emotions involved in the perpetration of intimate femicide. The data gathered are based on 33 open-ended interviews with convicted male perpetrators from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Honduras, Mexico, and Venezuela. We identify four main emotions reflecting participants' experiences of femicide: Fear, expressed through stories of women as threats to self, family, and community; helplessness, expressed through stories of men being trapped, judged, and persecuted; and pain, connected to stories of jealousy and belittlement. These lead to anger, expressed through stories of bodily reactions and losing control. The findings indicate that intimate femicide perpetrators resort to lethal violence to regulate self-worth and remediate actions they feel were disruptive. Our research demonstrates the importance of embodied and narrated emotions to understand femicides. We argue that viewing femicide as a product of a shared pervasive emotional economy highlights the role of emotions in maintaining a gendered social order. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This feminist-oriented text revolves around methodological discussions regarding women's participation in different wars, specifically their writing processes within the context of armed conflicts. These reflections shed light on how certain nations shape gendered mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion, which, when undergoing social crises, produce experiences, junctures, ruptures, and continuities at the borders that individuals and societies can (or cannot) cross. Subsequently, the text analyzes how certain studies on wars position women as subjects who strategically act and construct their identities, environments, and narratives through the written word, both at a personal, societal, political, and activist level. By problematizing the relationship between war, nation, gender, and writing, it is revealed how gender, both masculine and feminine, is moulded, (re)produced, and (re)defined, and how it naturalizes, justifies, and legitimizes the existence of wars and nations. The article presents part of a study that aimed to understand communication in inclusive classes based on the narratives of teachers who teach mathematics in classes with blind students. The research uses studies on inclusive education and critical mathematics education to produce data from narratives of the teachers who participated in the research through episodic interviews conducted remotely in 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic. To analyze them, analytical categories refer to the concepts of accessibility and dialogue anchored in the theoretical approaches of reference. The analyses highlight the teachers’ concern about including blind students in the narrated activities, even if, sometimes, inclusion was not made explicit in the narrated episodes. These results confirm the findings of other research that the presence of students with different disabilities causes doubts and uncertainties in teachers, both related to didactic choices and to the way of acting and teaching. We conjecture that overcoming these difficulties involves adequate physical infrastructure, availability of appropriate teaching resources, and access to initial and continuing training that discusses inclusive education. Les auteurs soulèvent plusieurs questions relatives aux écrits, témoignages, autofictions publiés par les victimes d'attentats : pourquoi se raconter ? Quelles sont les motivations qui poussent un écrivain, un essayiste, un anonyme à faire le récit de sa vie ou d'un segment de sa vie ? Qu'est-ce qui déclenche ce besoin, cette envie ? Quels sont les destinataires de ces messages ? Il s'agit d'une recherche originale, les auteurs n'ayant pas retrouvé dans la littérature spécialisée ce type d'approche. Analyse de textes de victimes (rédigés par les victimes directes ou indirectes ou par leurs proches) en fonction de plusieurs paramètres, dont la succession chronologique – parfois minutieuse – des événements, la narration de vécus personnels à distances parfois très variables des situations qui les inspirent. Il s'agit d'une analyse en réseau selon la méthode de l'Épistémologie clinique comparative dont il ressort que la structure et la construction littéraire choisies par les auteurs sont très variées, tout comme les genres littéraires maîtrisés ou esquissés auxquels ils se rattachent. Les rôles de ces textes et les fonctions auxquels vient répondre la construction de tels récits diffèrent selon les victimes ; on retrouve souvent une fonction de mise à distance, une prise de recul par rapport à un moment de sa vie qui affecte son devenir. Par rapport au lecteur, la fonction de témoignage et de partage ne semble pas une explication suffisante, alors que le besoin de faire vivre chaque disparu dans la mémoire collective apparaît souvent pour la victime comme une nécessité. La Narratologie et les études de Ricœur sur l' identité et la constitution de soi ont souligné la richesse de la notion d'unité narrative de la vie tout en prenant en considération les difficultés qu'elle soulève. Les écrits de victimes rendent compte d'un vécu individuel à différents moments de l'évolution du trauma et de l'état séquellaire ; le moment du passage à l'écriture, à proximité ou à distance de l'attentat, est variable, tout comme l'évolution du stress post-traumatique ; quant à l'état séquellaire, il est souvent apprécié différemment par la victime, son entourage et les professionnels. This is an original research, the authors having not found in the specialized literature this kind of approach. The authors raise several questions related to the writings, testimonies, and autofictions published by the victims of attacks: Why tell yourself? What are the motivations that push a writer, an essayist, an anonymous person to tell the story of his life or a segment of his life? What triggers this need, this desire? Who are the recipients of these messages? Analysis of victims' texts (written by direct or indirect victims or their relatives) according to several parameters, including chronological succession – sometimes meticulous – events, the narration of personal experiences at distances sometimes very variable of the situations that inspire them. This is a network analysis according to the method of comparative clinical epistemology which shows that: the literary structure and construction chosen by the authors are very varied, as are the literary genres mastered or sketched to which they belong. The roles of these texts and the functions to which the construction of such narratives responds differ according to the victims; we often find a remote function, a step back from a moment in his life that affects his future. Compared to the reader, the function of testimony and sharing does not seem a sufficient explanation while the need to make each disappeared live in the collective memory often appears to the victim as a necessity. The Narratology and Ricoeur's studies on identity and self-constitution have emphasized the richness of the notion of narrative unity of life while taking into account the difficulties it raises. The writings of victims account for an individual experience at different moments of the evolution of trauma and sequelae; the moment of transition to writing, near or at a distance of the attack is variable, as is the evolution of posttraumatic stress; as for the sequelae it is often appreciated differently by the victim, his entourage and professionals. À partir d’un corpus de récits recueillis auprès d’enfants et d’adultes dans des villages du bas-Tapajós (Amazonie brésilienne, état du Pará), j’analyserai, dans cet article, le paysage narratif local à la lumière de l’histoire régionale. Les deux personnages les plus récurrents des récits, le Jurupari, un monstre sylvestre qui dévore les chasseurs imprudents, et le Boto, un dauphin enchanté qui se transforme en un beau jeune homme blanc pour séduire ses victimes, sont associés respectivement, par les populations locales, à une figure stéréotypée de l’« Indien » et au monde des « Blancs » et des téléromans. Je propose une lecture conjointe de ces deux figures en montrant comment les villageois se situent face à elles, selon un jeu d’identification et de mise à distance qui n’est pas exempt d’ambiguïtés.

Após 21 anos da implementação da Lei 10.216, que sanciona a mudança do modelo de saúde manicomial para uma sociedade livre de manicômios, o Ministério da Saúde decretou, por meio da Portaria 596, de 22 de março de 2022, o Programa de Desinstitucionalização para a reinserção social de pessoas com transtornos mentais e/ou decorrentes do uso de álcool e outras drogas, em hospitais psiquiátricos. Metodologicamente, tomaremos as narrativas sobre a lógica manicomial, bem como o sistema psiquiátrico e as internações compulsórias, evidenciando as consequências das práticas comunicativas na construção de sentidos sobre a loucura e/ou desvios. Em que medida esse movimento acentua o avanço de um processo conservador, colocando em xeque a Reforma Psiquiátrica e as políticas púbicas de saúde, é o objeto da reflexão que desenvolveremos nas próximas páginas.

Résumé : L’explosion des séries télévisées et des plateformes de diffusion en Afrique fait apparaître d’un côté une nouvelle économie de l’audiovisuel, instaure de l’autre un rapport inédit aux contenus sériels. Au Sénégal, la série Maitresse d’un homme marié a provoqué une onde de choc pour le franc-parler des personnages et les sujets tabous qu’elle aborde sans ambages. En partant de l’analyse d’un point de vue nouveau sur les aventures sentimentales, l’auteur cherche à saisir les frontières de l’intime en montrant comment elles sont redéfinies par les pratiques mises en scène, les modalités de la narration sérielle et les codes du drame mobilisés. Développant les thèses des philosophes Jacques Rancière et Gilles Deleuze, il explore l’illusion du couple idéal et la lutte perpétuelle entre amour et désamour, deux thématiques que le cinéma n’a cessé d’explorer depuis sa naissance.

This participatory evaluation involving workers from Psychosocial Care Centers for Children and Adolescents in a large city in southeastern Brazil addresses the work process and its relationship with institutional suffering from the perspective of René Käes. A course was offered to workers that involved the construction and validation of narratives, an agreement on evaluation indicators and a guide to good practices. Workers expressed different types of institutional suffering that was related to working conditions, relationships at the institution and lack of spaces for dialogue and permanent training, such as institutional clinical supervision. They also showed that they are highly identify with the values of the health and psychiatric reforms, as well as with the city's peculiar history of health policies, which contributed to keep up what Onocko-Campos calls "institutional illusion". Looking through the pages of family photo albums or the folders of photographic archival fonds can only be described as holding history in your hands. Whether it is in the form of colour or black and white prints, negatives, or slides, these photo-objects carry histories of lives lived that go beyond their frames. Focusing on a set of oral history interviews conducted with two Black women living in Montréal — a community photographer or image "maker" who was most active during the 1970s–1990s and a photo-collector or "keeper" who is currently active in preserving and sharing photographs for her church and wider communities within the city — this article engages with how the interweaving of photography and oral history gives us a rich way to experience the histories of Black social life in Montréal. Photo-led oral history interviews are sites for fruitful and in-depth conversation, providing interviewee and interviewer alike with the possibility of coming into encounter with everyday or minor histories that are too often overlooked. Moreover, this article is driven by a set entwined questions: How does oral testimony open up additional avenues for sharing the events of the past that have been captured through photographic images? What affective and relational qualities do photographs possess and how, in turn, do these qualities transform the space of the oral history interview? This article examines the emotional terrain and discursive frames that govern the constitution of those subject to the "dangerous offender" (DO) designation in Canada. Focusing on the emotion of remorse, we discuss four narratives involving individuals who went through the DO hearing process, gaining significant media attention. Asking what role Indigeneity and other factors play in how the media discuss the emotional comportment of DOs, we examine the persistence of particular discursive frames in these narratives, and the counter-frames that challenge or disrupt dominant understandings of what it is appropriate to feel. The expression of emotion, and its interpretation, can be critical to the outcome of cases, criminalized people/survivor stigmatization, and normalization of punishment and may also motivate community mobilization and prompt policy change. Although Canada's first documented case of COVID-19 appeared in mid-January 2020, it was not until March that messaging about the need to contain the virus heightened. In this research note, we document the use of the media's construction of risk through framing in the early stages of the pandemic. We analyze three dimensions of the health risk narratives related to COVID-19 that dominated Canadians' concerns about the virus. To capture these narratives, we examine print and online news coverage from two nationally distributed media sources. We assess these frames alongside epidemiological data and find there is a clear link between media coverage, epidemiological data and risk frames in the early stages of the pandemic. It appears that the media relied on health expertise and political sources to guide their coverage and was responsive to the public health data presented to Canadians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article addresses the reception in mental health of people undergoing transsexualization; it is based on a qualitative research that was conducted by using the relational autoethnography method. The narratives of the participants are analyzed to discuss the process of arriving at the reception, the complex physical transformation of both body and gender identity, and the function of the reception in that process. We highlight the narrative practice and the sharing of personal stories as a way of producing new meanings for the unique experience of gender transition, taking advantage of differences as a way of seeking a broader vision and the possibility of coexistence of multiple perspectives. To conclude, we emphasize the psychosocial approach as a fundamental strategy for building shared, comprehensive, horizontal care that favors users' autonomy and meets their needs. This article examines the development, handling, and depositions of disc-on-bow brooches from the sixth to tenth centuries AD in the Vendel and Viking periods in Norway and mainland Sweden. A revised typological framework is presented, and the context of these brooches explored. The authors discuss their preservation, re-use, fragmentation, and ritual meaning within ongoing social negotiations and internal conflicts from the late Vendel period into the Viking Age. References to the past in VikingAge society and the significance of women for maintaining narratives of the past are considered, as are levels of access, control, and definition of narratives of the past in times of social redefinition. When examining one’s positionality, it is impossible to ignore the outside influence of social institutions on personal viewpoints and opinions. My lived experiences from childhood to the present have helped me to realize the importance of giving marginalized groups a voice within education. From being an outsider to a new culture while studying in Spain to learning about the struggles of the indigenous peoples of Australia through personal narratives, my eyes were opened to the fact that marginalized groups are underrepresented in curriculums around the world. Experiencing various cultures and education systems around the world has given me a global perspective on how to implement an epistemically diverse curriculum in my classroom. An interdisciplinary educational approach would allow for various perspectives and ideas from different disciplines to come together in one classroom for a common goal of a well-rounded education for students.

Society and culture are interdependent. Religion, as an important factor of culture, offers its desired behaviour patterns. Art always follows society and is always a part of culture. One nation's culture can potentially be influenced by another's. In this paper, I have analysed the causes and consequences of the British influence on Indian culture, dating from the sixteenth century till India's independence in 1947. British influence is present in India's general culture, architecture, education system, sport, traffic, bureaucracy, fashion, infrastructure, etc. The indisputably significant British influence on the Indian lifestyle is proved by the fact that the English language is accepted as an official language in the Republic of India. Are the consequences, at large, bad or good? – It will probably always be an open issue for discussion. In her collection of stories Interpreter of Maladies (1999), Jhumpa Lahiri explores and analyses various topics related to the lives of Indian Americans. She describes and faithfully depicts their lives, both in India and outside their native country. The paper also shows her filigree-precise sense of the reality and feelings of Indians who are in the process of acculturation in other countries, as well as their personal and collective struggle with their own identity and the sense of displacement. The transparency theory, advocating free translation, is focused on the equivalency concepts both formal and dynamic, which will be analysed and illustrated in more detail in the paper. De nos jours, les grands mouvements de populations amènent des individus de différentes cultures à entrer en contact, dans un vaste partage d'espaces de vie. Les psychologues, notamment ceux travaillant avec des familles et des enfants aux appartenances culturelles multiples, ne disposent pas toujours de tests psychologiques adaptés. Le but de cet article est d'évaluer dans quelle mesure le TEMAS, dans une version transculturelle représentant des personnages de différentes couleurs de peaux, peut permettre à des enfants aux appartenances culturelles multiples de produire des histoires à même de donner aux psychologues des informations sur leur dynamique psycho-affective et leur développement identitaire. À travers l'analyse des récits d'un enfant, nous mettons l'accent sur les conflits intrapsychiques qu'il verbalise, la manière dont il perçoit et interprète les images en fonction de leur contenu latent et les éventuelles particularités liées à son développement identitaire d'enfant de migrant. La proximité entre l'environnement multiculturel réel dans lequel évoluent les enfants et les images qui la représentent peut favoriser l'adhésion au matériel du test, et la qualité du processus d'identification et de narration. Le TEMAS peut être un instrument permettant d'explorer le fonctionnement psychologique d'enfants, à travers leurs productions narratives et ce quel que soit leur parcours culturel et linguistique. Nowadays, the wide flows of peoples lead individuals who have different culture to get in touch with one another, with a great sharing of life spaces. The psychologists, who mainly deal with multicultural families and children, do not always have suitable psychological tests. The objective of this article is to evaluate how the TEMAS, in a transcultural version which represents different skin-colored characters, may enable children with multiple cultural belonging to produce stories and, at the same time, provide the psychologists with information about their psychological and emotional dynamics and their identity development. Through the analysis of a child's stories, we emphasize the intrapsychic conflicts that he expresses, the way he perceives and interprets the illustrations depending on their latent content and the possible peculiarities connected to his identity development as a migrant's son. The closeness between the real multicultural background where the children grow up and the illustrations that represent it, may help the adherence to the material of the test and the quality of the identification and narration process. The TEMAS can be an instrument, which permits to explore the children's psychic functioning, through their narrative productions whatever their cultural and linguistic route is. Taking a psychodynamic perspective, the present exploratory study proposes an integrated approach to explore the forced migratory experience, focusing simultaneously on mental health risk and protective factors and on the quality of the subjective experience of migration. We aimed to evaluate trauma and protective factors and to explore in-depth representations and meanings asylum seekers hosted in Italy attribute to their experiences. Levels of trauma and resilience were first evaluated for twenty asylum seekers hosted in two Reception Centres; then, in-depth interviews were administered. Six out of twenty participants presented with symptoms of trauma and all presented with moderately high resilience levels. The interviews were analysed using a quality-quantitative methodology via T-Lab software, and showed four thematic clusters: A godforsaken place; From death to life across the sea; Memories from the past; Searching for a land of care. In line with the identity fracture highlighted in psychodynamic literature, our results show a breakdown between the deeper and original aspects of participants' identity and their new cultural identity as migrants, which has many social components. The purpose of this article is to examine several interrelated aspects of the Liberal Party's plan proposed during the 2015 election campaign to resettle 25,000 government-assisted Syrian refugees prior to the end of that year, and the Liberal government's efforts after the 2015 election to implement that plan. The objective is to examine the following four interrelated aspects of that plan before and after the 2015 election: (a) the evolution of key provisions in the plan; (b) the composition and thematic thrusts of the justificatory narrative for the plan; (c) the composition and thematic thrusts of the counter-narrative that critiqued both the plan and its justificatory narrative; and (d) the degree of continuity and change to public opinion regarding the Liberal plan. The article also devotes some attention to the lessons that can be drawn from this case study regarding factors that shape narratives and counter-narratives, and some potentially valuable directions for further research. Based on 222 qualitative interviews conducted through a large ethnographic research project on transformed industrial landscapes in six countries, the main argument of the article is threefold. First, landscapes and narratives about past and present landscapes are relevant to the identity of class; second, the transformation of industrial landscapes is most emphatically expressed by nostalgia; third, the narratives are a transnationally constitutive element of class identity. The narratives of workers about the transformation and destruction of former workplaces express an identity crisis as seen in feelings of mourning and indifference. However, this does not indicate an erosion in the relevance of identity. Considering class as also having an emotional dimension, the article demonstrates that a class identity also evolves out of loss and longing. As nostalgia for a past now gone is a common narrative identity element in the research areas, it is considered as constitutive of a transnational class identity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
