As he claims to make up for his father’s sins, Pierre Glendinning acts as a self-appointed Archangel and measures up to the Hidden God. He feels justified by Plotinus Plinlimmon’s pamphlet which highlights the discrepancy between human values that are bound to be relative and Divine Justice that is absolute and yet posits that no matter how local time may differ from universal time, there must needs be a single standard, the equivalent of Greenwich Mean Time. And yet, far from leading to a final conclusive revelation that might serve as a cornerstone, our latter-day Pierre is ultimately faced with an entangled maze of merely partial and transient perspectives.

This thesis aims to provide the first complete study of the poetics of Pierre Reverdy, who, although famous and influential during his lifetime, has not been widely published or researched. This thesis hopes to change this, as his complete works are just now being republished. The first chapter lays the basis for his conception of reality as something in which man is trapped, and which calls for a distance that, in Reverdy's eyes, only poetry can offer. His association of the image and lyricism, is presented and analysed. The second chapter aims to provide a linguistic understanding of the poetic image called for and devises the new concept of “illumination”, to give an account of the phenomenon at work in his verse. The third chapter focuses on lyricism, as Reverdy tries to reinvent it for the twentieth century: independent of the self, dealing only with expressing the affective tonalities of the poet and acting as a catalyst for the image. The last chapter defines the visual qualities of Reverdy's poetry by first re-examining the title of cubist poet that had been attached to him, before focussing on the many forms that the image takes in his work (imagery, but also typography, mental imagery), and finally providing the first analysis of the relationship between paintings and poems in the famous Livres d'artistes that the poet created, in collaboration with Picasso, Matisse, Juan Gris and others. It establishes that while the poems can indeed be read without the illustrations with which they were conceived, these editions deprive the reader of the opportunity to remind himself that poetry is an experience rather than a quest for meaning and also of an introduction to the unique visual qualities of Reverdy's poetry.

This thesis explores Herman Melville’s relationship to sceptical philosophy. By reading Melville’s fictions of the 1840s and 1850s alongside the writings of Descartes, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant, I seek to show that they manifest by turns expression, rebuttal, and mitigated acceptance of philosophical doubt. Melville was an attentive reader of philosophical texts, and he refers specifically to concepts such as Berkeleyan immaterialism and the Kantian “noumenon”. But Melville does not simply dramatise pre-existing theories; rather, in works such as Mardi, Moby-Dick, and Pierre he enacts sceptical and anti-sceptical ideas through his literary strategies, demonstrating their relevance in particular regions of human experience. In so doing he makes a substantive contribution to a philosophical discourse that has often been criticised – by commentators including Samuel Johnson and Jonathan Swift – for its tendency to abstraction. Melville’s interest in scepticism might be read as part of a wider cultural response to a period of unprecedented social and political change in antebellum America, and with this in mind I compare and contrast his work with that of Dickinson, Douglass, Emerson, and Thoreau. But in many respects Melville’s distinctive and original treatment of scepticism sets him apart from his contemporaries, and in order to fully make sense of it one must range more widely through the canons of philosophy and literature. His exploration of the ethical consequences of doubt in The Piazza Tales, for example, can be seen to anticipate with remarkable precision the theories of twentieth-century thinkers such as Emmanuel Levinas and Stanley Cavell. I work chronologically though selected prose from the period 1849-1857, paying close attention to the textual effects and philosophical allusions in each work. In so doing I hope to offer fresh ways of looking at Melville’s handling of literary form and the wider shape of his career. I conclude with reflections on how Melville’s normative emphasis on the acknowledgement of epistemological limitation might inform the practice of literary criticism.

13. The Crosstemporal Conundrum: Indigenous Specters in Antebellum American Literature.
- Author
-
GILES, PAUL
- Abstract
Starting from a "crosstemporal" theoretical position, this essay argues that discursive engagement with Indigenous cultures among "early" American writers has the effect of projecting the chronological span of fictional and philosophical narratives backward as well as forward. By reconfiguring Native American culture as a field with which American writers engage discursively rather than just literally, it becomes possible to expand the temporal trajectories of antebellum American literature and to see it as operating in a more complex, multidirectional manner. By tracing the emergence of global narratives of America through the writings of Chateaubriand in the 1820s, and then comparing the works of American writers such as Sedgwick, Emerson, and Melville to the works of Native American writers such as Occom and Apess, this essay suggests how dialogue with Indigenous cultural perspectives expands the horizons of antebellum American literature in space as well as time. It combines theoretical inquiry about temporality, periodization, and the reconstruction of history with a textual analysis of how Aboriginal cultural formations are represented in Melville's novel Pierre. This raises questions about how and why certain U.S. narratives have been canonized and the exclusions linked to traditional versions of American exceptionalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Principalities and powers : revising John Howard Yoder's sociological theology

Evaluations of John Howard Yoder’s legacy have proliferated since his death in 1997. Although there is much disagreement, a broad consensus is forming that his theology was, on the one hand, focused on the social and political meaning of the New Testament accounts of Jesus Christ and, on the other hand, sociologically reductive, hermeneutically tendentious, and ecclesiologically ambiguous. This thesis proposes a revision of Yoder’s theology that maintains its broadly sociological emphasis but corrects for its apparent problems. In specific, adjustments are made to his social theory to open it to spiritual reality, to hone its analytical approach, and to clarify its political import. To do so his preferred framework for social criticism, the theology of the principalities and powers, is examined in the context of his wider work and its critics, and then synthesized with concepts from Pierre Bourdieu’s influential reflexive sociology. Yoder maintains that the powers, understood as social structures, are part of God’s good creation, fallen, and now being redeemed through their subjection to the risen Lord Christ. Bourdieu’s fundamental sociological concepts--habitus, capital, and field--enable an interpretation of the powers as dynamically constituted by their relations to the triune God and to personal dispositions. His treatment of social reproduction and freedom furthermore facilitate a construal of choice as a divinely gifted, sociologically mediated freedom for obedience to God. The sinful restriction of this freedom is read in light of Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence, which recognizes the ambiguity of violence without thereby identifying any form of killing as nonviolent. Violence and other phenomena can be investigated by a reflexive, dialogical, and empirically rigorous comparison with the life of Christ. The church’s spiritual participation in the redemption of the violent powers is conceptualized in Bourdieusian terms as a critical legitimation of other political and cultural fields made possible through autonomy from those fields. Christian social distinctiveness moreover has universal meaning because it is oriented towards the worship of God and so radically welcoming of others; and this sociological universality is distinctive because it is the result of a particular history of social struggles with and for God. These revisions to Yoder’s theology of the principalities and powers produce a sociological theology that is material and spiritual, critical and dialogical, and particular and universal. By incorporating these revisions, Yoder’s work can continue to support those who seek peace in a world riven by violence.

This thesis explores nurses’ conceptualisation of dementia and discusses the relationship between these understandings and nursing practice. Using the reflexive sociological approach of French scholar Pierre Bourdieu, the study seeks to advance practice through the enhancement of theoretical understandings. Data were collected in a range of inpatient clinical areas in Scotland using focus groups, individual interviews and observation. A range of nurses contributed, reflecting views and understandings from inpatient areas run by both general medical and mental health services. Nurses were found to conceptualise dementia in four main ways; as a disease, as a memory problem, as confusion and finally as a journey. These four conceptualisations are addressed in turn and the ways in which they inform and relate to practice are discussed. Limitations to practice arising from the nurses conceptualisations are also highlighted. Dominant approaches to care are outlined throughout the thesis, with the medical model, individualised care, person-centred dementia care and palliative care all being discussed in light of the nurses’ understandings of dementia. Throughout the thesis the work of Pierre Bourdieu shapes the analysis and presentation of data. Relationships within the social world, structures of society and of inpatient settings along with explicit reflection on the personal experiences and position of the researcher inform the work. Concepts of field, capital and habitus permeate the discussion and help to explore issues and understandings from both practice and theory. While literature on specific approaches to dementia care, treatments and relationships between patients, carers and family members form a substantial and growing body of dementia literature, information about nurses and their understandings of dementia has previously been unexplored. This study demonstrates the range of views held by nurses and the influences of education, structures of the clinical setting and ward culture in shaping those understandings. The importance of nurses’ conceptualisations of dementia in shaping their care of patients is demonstrated through the analysis and has the potential to inform and enhance practice development for dementia patients in a variety of inpatient settings.

Patricia J. Smith's essay on the professionalization of honors advances several original and provocative arguments that deserve serious consideration. Although Smith makes a plausible case that honors has fulfilled at least three of Theodore Caplow's four stages of professionalization, a closer reading of this text reveals that the developments identified by Smith fail to satisfy the basic functions that each stage serves on the path toward professionalism. This essay argues that honors has little incentive to become a distinct profession because much of its highly skilled workforce enjoys the protection of occupational closure as college faculty and administrators. The author proposes an alternative sociological framework, inspired by the work of Pierre Bourdieu, for investigating past and present social dynamics of honors education. Key concepts of Bourdieu's theory of practice (field, illusio, doxa, and habitus) are defined and applied to the context of honors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Especially after the 1610s, Tridentine Catholicism forcefully reasserted itself as a prominent political and intellectual force in the Spanish Netherlands. Integrating this reality into accounts of Spanish-Netherlandish science in the 17th century has been a considerable challenge for historians of science. The latter either turned their gazes elsewhere or assumed a fundamental incompatibility between "science" and "religion," thus securing one dominant explanation for the classic thesis that the Spanish Netherlands largely "lost the plot" of the so-called Scientific Revolution after the 1620s. This paper turns to a local debate on Thomas Fienus's embryological theses (1620), which has never been studied, to test the underlying assumption that "science" and "religion" can be taken as two distinct and/or opposed categories of historical analysis. I show that this assumption not only fails to capture historical actors' experiences and understandings, but also that it fails to consider how tensions between medicine and theology were positively productive. First, I argue that medical philosophizing was positively motivated by socio-religious concerns of its own. Second, I show that, far from being a protracted battle between two stable positions, the debate constituted an instance of boundary work, where medical philosophers like Fienus progressively tested and repositioned the theological credentials of their preferred theses. This ushered in the adoption of a probabilistic epistemology that increasingly secured Catholic theology's normative credibility and the pursuit of autonomous natural-philosophical inquiry.

The Virgin and Child, known as the Virgin and Child from the Church of Saint-Sauveur, a masterpiece now in the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille, was the subject of an extensive restoration between 1994 and 1997. This unprecedented operation undertaken by the Musées de France Restoration Department entailed an in-depth investigation into production techniques and the application of polychromy to a monumental stone sculpture, few examples of which had been previously studied. The removal of overpaint revealed the exceptional quality of the original layer of paint and its remarkable condition. What was truly outstanding was the predominant use of gold, notably on the garments, whose particularly refined decorative patterns suggest the texture and weight of rich fabrics.

A 14th-century altarpiece now in the Musée de Bar-le-Duc, which probably came from the collegiate church of Saint-Maxe in the same city, was restored in 2008 in view of its inclusion in the exhibition “Early Altarpieces (12th-early 15th century). A presentation of Sacred Art”, held at the Louvre in 2009. Its restoration renewed the vivacity of a work that had suffered from vandalism, which very likely occurred during the French Revolution, and from being used for other purposes at a time that remains undetermined. Furthermore, the research undertaken in relation to this renovation highlighted the characteristics of the original polychromy, notably its palette of colours and its complementarity with the sculpted form.

Important elements of the exceptional polychromy of Our Lady of Good Tidings, a 14th-century Virgin and Child now in the Musée des Augustins, Toulouse (RA 511), have recently been restored. A rich and complex decor has thus been uncovered. On the Virgin’s cloak, peacocks, blossoming branches and accoladed floral motifs on a white background contrast with gilded fleurs-de-lis on a blue background on the inside of the garment. The Virgin’s veil, which is also wrapped around the Child, is adorned with gilded eagles and stylized fleurettes, again set against a white background. On the robe, the use of red offers an added touch of brightness to this extremely refined ensemble.

L’or est souvent présent. In 14th-century French sculpture, polychromy existed in the form of inlays (marble, glass, enamel, metallic elements); partial polychromy was occasionally used and gilding was often present. Polychromy imitated precious textiles; flesh tints were realistically suggested. Major studies and restoration programmes were recently undertaken on their subject in French museums (Toulouse, Le Mans, Dijon) or in the context of a historic monument ( Well of Moses, Dijon).

Acquired by the Louvre in 2003, the statue of St John the Evangelist (RF 4699) must have initially been part of a group depicting a Crucifixion scene. A stylistic study, supported by a technical examination and the analysis of the stone, enabled us to establish its provenance: the Rodez region. The uncovering of the original polychromy, undertaken during the restoration of the sculpture in 2011, revealed strong contrasting colours on the robe and cloak and the fresh, subtly nuanced flesh tints. The ample use of “applied brocade” decoration conferred a certain preciosity upon this work.

SOCIAL norms - Abstract
Close reading reveals that Herman Melville alluded to Poe's "The Raven," often through verbal correspondences, throughout his novel Pierre. Furthermore, there are significant similarities between Melville's use of "The Raven" in Pierre and Nathaniel Hawthorne's use of that poem in The Blithedale Romance. Yet important differences also exist, especially in regard to Melville's not only remembering, but also renouncing--of societal norms and literary expectations, and perhaps, as well, of efforts to overcome the reserve of Hawthorne and efforts to know the secret of the universe. The varied kinds of renouncing are linked by way of the multiple allusions to Poe's most celebrated poem. In addition, Melville's interest in "The Raven" continued in subsequent years. This article examines the impact that misreporting adoption status has on the identification and estimation of causal effects on productivity. In particular, by comparing measurement error-ridden self-reported adoption data with measurement-error-free DNA-fingerprinted adoption data, we investigate the extent to which such errors bias the causal effects of adoption on productivity. Taking DNA-fingerprinted adoption data as a benchmark, we find 25% "false negatives" and 10% "false positives" in farmers' responses. Our results show that misreporting of adoption status is not exogenous to household characteristics, and produces a bias of about 22 percentage points in the productivity impact of adoption. Ignoring inherent behavioral adjustments of farmers based on perceived adoption status has a bias of 13 percentage points. The results of this article underscore the crucial role that correct measurement of adoption plays in designing policy interventions that address constraints to technology adoption in agriculture.

Considered from the 19th century without giving rise to in-depth research, the use of Eocene limestone from the Pays de Retz (Loire-Atlantique) or of the northwest of Vendée in the production of sarcophagi during Late Antiquity and the Merovingian period is currently being investigated using petrography. The petrographic studies carried out in recent years in Vendée and Loire-Atlantique have identified a few sandy limestone burial containers, the stone was, in all likelihood, extracted from sedimentary soils formed during the Lutetian period. These include two sarcophagi kept in the Noirmoutier-en-l’Île castle, a lid from the Barbâtre cemetery, a sarcophagus unearthed on the site of La Butte cavalière in La Garnache and another exposed in the enclosure of the old Notre-Dame-de-la-Chaume abbey in Machecoul. Lutetian sandy limestone seems to have been used from Late Antiquity to the 8th century.

This paper presents a new unreliable failure detector, called the Impact failure detector (FD), that, contrarily to the majority of traditional FDs, outputs a trust level value which expresses the degree of confidence in the system. An impact factor is assigned to each process and the trust level is equal to the sum of the impact factors of the processes not suspected of failure. Moreover, a threshold parameter defines a lower bound value for the trust level, over which the confidence in the system is ensured. In particular, we defined a flexibility property that denotes the capacity of the Impact FD to tolerate a certain margin of failures or false suspicions, i.e. its capacity of considering different sets of responses that lead the system to trusted states. The Impact FD is suitable for systems that present node redundancy, heterogeneity of nodes, clustering feature and allow a margin of failures which does not degrade the confidence in the system. The paper also includes a timer-based distributed algorithm which implements an Impact FD, as well as its proof of correctness, for systems whose links are lossy asynchronous or for those whose all (or some) links are eventually timely. Performance evaluation results, based on PlanetLab (Planetlab. http://www.planet-lab.org. 'Online. Access date: 16 September 2016') traces, confirm the degree of flexible applicability of our FD and that, due to the accepted margin of failure, both failures and false suspicions are more tolerated when compared to traditional unreliable FDs. GREEK architecture , *VISUAL culture , *ENGRAVING - Abstract
This essay examines Herman Melville's reflections on form, line, and perspective in his novel Pierre (1852) and his poems on art and architecture in Timoleon (1891), a late book of verse partly inspired by his tour of the Mediterranean during 1856-57. I argue that Melville arrives at his understanding of literary form through the language of optical perspective, particularly the terms of "foreshortening" and "outline." I compare Melville's figurative conception of outline with the artistic theories and practices of William Blake, George Cumberland, John Ruskin, and the artist John Flaxman, whose illustrations of Homer and Dante feature prominently in Pierre. Widely circulated as engravings by Tommaso Piroli and others, Flaxman's clean-lined drawings fascinate Melville because they emphasize implied narrative rather than optical verisimilitude. Melville responds to a romantic discourse that positions "outline" on the conceptual boundary between sense-perception and free-floating thought, as a mediating term between competing notions of art's truth. In both his fiction and poetry, Melville's reflection on the materiality of pictures doubles as a reflection on the materiality of thought. The formal features of visual art suggest the workings of the mind as it flattens unconscious possibilities and disparate truths into a manageable picture of the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
