The reported incidences of co-participation of Mycoplasma capricolum capripneumoniae (Mccp) and Pasteurella multocida in increased severity and pathogenesis of goats with Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) in sub-Saharan Africa elicited the study’s purpose. Using the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guideline, two search engines, namely Google Scholar and PubMed, were queried to systematically review all the available literature on the current epidemiological status of CCPP and Pneumonic Pasteurellosis co-concurrently detected in goats and assess the available treatment and control measures and their challenges in the Sub-Saharan region. The search was limited to papers published between 1998 and 2024, whereby only peer-reviewed English articles were included in the study. Review papers, papers displaying abstracts only, duplicated information, papers beyond the sub-Saharan Africa region and papers published in other languages were excluded from the study. Only articles with full text and focused on goats were included for further screening process and review. A total of 3311 articles were retrieved from both databases, whereas only 58 articles met the inclusion criteria and hence were included in the data analysis. Only eight countries namely, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Sudan, Eritrea, Zambia and Tanzania reported the occurrence of CCPP and or Pasteurellosis: Ethiopia 23/58(39%), Tanzania 18/58 (31%), 1/58(2%) Nigeria, 1/58(2%) Zambia, 1/58(2%) Eritrea, Uganda 2/58 (3%), 2/58(3%) Sudan and Kenya 10/58(16%). Only 5/58 (9%) reported the occurrence of pneumonic pasteurellosis in Nigeria and Ethiopia. Only Tanzania (75%) and Ethiopia (33%) reported Mccp and Pasteurella multocida co-isolation and/ or detection in CCPP cases. Information on the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Mccp and Pasteurella multocida from Sub-Saharan Africa was unavailable. One vaccine against CCPP, namely F-38 inactivated, and one vaccine against pneumonic pasteurellosis were identified to be developed and used in Sub-Saharan Africa. Interest in causes of mortality of free-ranging, native North American lagomorphs has grown with the emergence of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2). Over the years 2013–2022, the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study received 119 Sylvilagus spp. case submissions from the central and eastern United States, comprising 147 rabbits. Most (86%) of these submissions occurred after detecting RHDV2 in the United States in 2020. Laboratory data from these rabbits were retrospectively evaluated for major causes, contributors to mortality, and pathogen detections. Gross and histologic examination was performed for 112 rabbits. Common primary causes of death included trauma (n = 49), bacterial disease (n = 31), emaciation (n = 6), and parasitism (n = 6). Among the 32 rabbits with bacterial disease, 12 were diagnosed with tularemia and 7 with pasteurellosis. Rabbits with pasteurellosis had disseminated abscessation, septicemia, and/or polyserositis. Less commonly, cutaneous fibroma (n = 2), notoedric mange (n = 2), encephalitozoonosis (n = 2), neoplasia (round-cell sarcoma; n = 1), and congenital abnormalities (n = 1) were diagnosed. RHDV2 was not detected in 123 rabbits tested. Although RHDV2 has not been detected in wild lagomorphs in the eastern United States, detections in domestic rabbits from the region emphasize the need for continued surveillance. Furthermore, continued surveillance for Francisella tularensis informs public health risk. In Italy, the use of autogenous inactivated vaccines prepared with the bacterial strains isolated from affected animals is authorized by the Ministry of Health in farms where bacterial diseases occur frequently. The autogenous vaccine performed using Pasteurella multocida is frequently used in rabbit farms, but the feedback of its application is not available. Therefore, the aim of this study is to give information about the impact on the clinical signs of a bivalent autogenous vaccine in rabbits of a genetic centre. The vaccine was prepared using two P. multocida strains belonging to serogroups A and F, equipped with virulence genes and responsible for cyclical outbreak of pasteurellosis in the farm. The vaccine was administered with a first injection, followed by another one after 15 days, then another one four months after the first injection, and then continuing with a further injection every six months to all rabbits. Clinical conditions and mortality rates were monitored for two years after the first vaccination. The improvement in clinical condition and the decrease of the mortality rate were significant especially in the first year post-vaccine. In addition, the number of animals removed due to the disease decreased greatly. Based on the finding of P. multocida strains belonging to serogroup D and serogroup A equipped with different virulence-gene patterns from those previously found, we suggest that the vaccine was unable to prevent the introduction and spreading of new strains among the rabbits.

Simple Summary: The aim of this study is to provide information about the Pasteurella multocida strains that are responsible for pasteurellosis in rabbits. A total of 114 strains responsible for different lesions in rabbits from industrial farms were investigated. In detail, the serogroup belonging to and the presence of 15 virulence-associated genes were investigated using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) protocols. The tested strains belonged to serogroups A, D, and F. Type A was the most frequently identified and it was prevalently found in strains responsible for rhinitis and pneumonia. Type D was the prevalent capsular type of strains responsible for metritis, while F was identified in strains detected from otitis, mastitis, subcutaneous abscesses, and septicaemia. Among the virulence-associated genes, sodC was found in all tested strains. Gene pfhA was more frequently found in strains belonging to type A than in type D and it was prevalently found in strains responsible for respiratory lesions. In addition, it was found in all F strains, suggesting a strong relationship between pfhA and this capsular type. Conversely, gene tadD was rarely found in strains belonging to capsular type F. Gene fur occurred more frequently in strains belonging to type D and involved with rhinitis. Gene hgbB was detected prevalently in strains responsible for metritis. Additionally, based on the results, the presence of more than 8 virulence-associated genes in the strains seems to increase the risk of the occurrence of severe lesions in the affected rabbits. Nevertheless, the detection of some strains responsible only for rhinitis which were equipped with 10 and 11 virulence-associated genes, seems to emphasise the importance of a gene's expression rather than its presence in strains. Pasteurellosis, a disease caused by Pasteurella multocida, is responsible for economic losses in rabbit industrial farms due to rhinitis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, metritis, mastitis, orchitis, subcutaneous abscesses, otitis, encephalitis, and septicaemic forms. Although the occurrence of the disease is conditioned by predisposing factors that affect the rabbit immune response, the strains of P. multocida involved in the infection may have a different pathogenic ability. Therefore, typing of strains spread among the rabbits is important to assess their pathogenic potential. Duck farmers face significant economic losses due to infections caused by duck virus enteritis (DVE) virus and Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), leading to high morbidity and mortality. These pathogens exhibit similar clinical manifestations. Thus, differentiating these infections based on clinical signs alone is highly challenging. The present study focuses on the detection of DVE coinfection among the pasteurellosis-suspected duck samples collected in Kerala during a 16 months study period. P. multocida was isolated from 19 samples in blood agar as mucoid, tiny dewdrop colonies. The isolates were further characterised by biochemical tests and confirmed by species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Among the 19 samples, 11 samples that were PCR positive for P. multocida (PM) revealed amplicons specific for DVE on PCR targeting UL2 gene of the DVE virus. The current study revealed the occurrence of concurrent infections of DVE and pasteurellosis in ducks that were immunised with the DVE vaccine. Abstract The paper describes data from the study of cultural, morphological, and biochemical properties and the pathogenicity and virulence of epizootic isolates of Pasteurella multocida obtained from cattle and saigas. The study aimed to investigate the properties of P. multocida isolated from saigas and cattle during their seasonal migration, with a focus on its role in the epizootic process and potential transmission to farm animals. The research was conducted in a laboratory setting at the West Kazakhstan Agrarian-Technical University. White mice, saigas, and cattle were examined, and pathological and bacteriological analyses were performed on tissues and secretions. Pathogenicity, virulence, and toxigenicity of the isolated Pasteurella cultures were determined through biological tests on white mice. The morphological, cultural, and biochemical properties of the isolates were studied using standard microbiological methods. The study found that P. multocida isolates from both saigas and cattle exhibited high pathogenicity and virulence when tested on white mice. The isolates from sick and dead animals displayed 65.3 and 83.3% pathogenicity, respectively. The isolates were toxic to white mice, with filtrate dilutions showing 100% toxigenicity. Comparative analysis showed morphological and cultural similarities between Pasteurella isolates from saigas and cattle, confirming their identity. This research demonstrates that P. multocida, isolated from both saigas and cattle, contributes to the epizootic process and poses a threat to farm animals. Saigas, in particular, play a role in disease transmission during seasonal migrations. Understanding the ecological interactions between wild and farm animals is crucial for implementing preventive measures to control the spread of infectious diseases, emphasizing the need for comprehensive monitoring and intervention strategies.

The present study was undertaken to address the recent spate of pasteurellosis outbreaks among sea-farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Norway and Scotland, coinciding with sporadic disease episodes in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) used for delousing purposes in salmon farms. Genome assemblies from 86 bacterial isolates cultured from diseased salmon or lumpfish confirmed them all as bona fide members of the Pasteurellaceae family, with phylogenetic reconstruction dividing them into two distinct branches sharing <88% average nucleotide identity. These branches therefore constitute two separate species, namely Pasteurella skyensis and the as-yet invalidly named "Pasteurella atlantica". Both species further stratify into multiple discrete genomovars (gv.) and/or lineages, each being nearly or fully exclusive to a particular host, geographic region, and/or time period. Pasteurellosis in lumpfish is, irrespective of spatiotemporal origin, linked almost exclusively to the highly conserved "P. atlantica gv. cyclopteri" (Pac). In contrast, pasteurellosis in Norwegian sea-farmed salmon, dominated since the late-1980s by "P. atlantica gv. salmonicida" (Pas), first saw three specific lineages (Pas-1, -2, and -3) causing separate, geographically restricted, and short-lived outbreaks, before a fourth (Pas-4) emerged recently and became more widely disseminated. A similar situation involving P. skyensis (Ps) has apparently been unfolding in Scottish salmon farming since the mid-1990s, where two historic (Ps-1 and -2) and one contemporary (Ps-3) lineages have been recorded. While the epidemiology underlying all these outbreaks/epizootics remains unclear, repeated detection of 16S rRNA gene amplicons very closely related to P. skyensis and "P. atlantica" from at least five cetacean species worldwide raises the question as to whether marine mammals may play a part, possibly as reservoirs. In fact, the close relationship between the studied isolates and Phocoenobacter uteri associated with harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), and their relatively distant relationship with other members of the genus Pasteurella, suggests that both P. skyensis and "P. atlantica" should bemoved to the genus Phocoenobacter. Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is an immobile, anaerobic, Gram-negative coccobacillus fermenting bacterium. This pathogen is commonly prevalent in the upper airways of healthy pets, such as cats and dogs, but was also confirmed in domestic cattle, rabbits, pigs, birds, and various wild animals. Infection in humans occurs as a result of biting, scratching, or licking by animals and contact with nasopharyngeal secretions. Inflammation at the site of infection develops within the first day from the injury. It is usually confined to the skin and subcutaneous tissue but, in particular situations, may spread to other organs and manifest as a severe systemic infection. Careful history-taking and microbiological confirmation of the infection enable diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Any wound resulting from an animal bite should be disinfected. The preferred and highly effective treatment against local P. multocida infection is penicillin or its derivatives. Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is a highly contagious and fatal disease of cattle and buffaloes and causes major economic losses to farmers. Though indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test has been used to detect a specific antibody against P. multocida, it has low specificity for sero-diagnosis of HS. Therefore, development of a rapid, highly sensitive and specific serological test is a prerequisite for detection of antibodies against HS. In this context, we explored an in-house ELISA method using recombinant antigens for detection of antibodies against P. multocida in bovines. nanH gene from P. multocida B:2 strain P52 was cloned and the recombinant mature protein with a C- and N-terminal truncation was produced as a fusion protein (~63 kDa) in Escherichia coli. The immunogenic potential of purified rNanH-Tr was assessed by the Western blot method using specific anti-rNanH-Tr antibody responses in sera collected from immunized rabbits. An indirect-ELISA based on rNanH-Tr was developed and optimized. Furthermore, the rNanH-Tr ELISA was applied to screen bovine serum samples (n=250). The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for the detection of anti P. multocida specific antibodies indicated a diagnostic sensitivity of 86.2 (CI 73.26-96.80%) and specificity of 80.0 (63.06-91.56%). No cross reactivity was noted with antibodies against other bovine diseases (e.g., foot-and-mouth disease and brucellosis). Objective: This research aimed to assess the prevalence of caprine pasteurellosis, isolate and identify pasteurellosis (Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida) in pneumonic goats, and discover the main bacterial cause of pneumonia. Materials and Methods: One hundred and five samples (94 nasal swabs and 11 lung tissues) from goats suspected of having pneumonia were taken and transferred aseptically to the laboratory. Following the processing of the collected samples, Pasteurella spp. was isolated with the aid of plate culture methods. Biochemical characteristics were used to identify all bacterial isolates, which were then verified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was also carried out to evaluate the sensitivity profiles of various antibiotics. The Pasteurella haemolytica serotype-specific antigen (PHSSA) gene was used to identify isolates of M. haemolytica, and the KMT1 gene was used to identify isolates of P multocida. Results: From the 105 clinically suspicious samples, 51 (48.57%) were identified to be Pasteurella spp. through bacteriological testing and also by PCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Of these, 47.87% (45/94) were nasal swabs, and 54.55% (6/11) were lung tissues. Among confirmed samples, 70.59% (36/51) were identified as M. haemolytica, and 29.41% (15/51) were identified as P. multocida. Resistance to tetracycline, streptomycin, oxytetracycline, gentamicin, and ceftriaxone was found in 50%-83% of the isolates. In addition, PCR identified the PHSSA and KMT1 genes from isolates of P. multocida and M. haemolytica, respectively. Conclusion: The present study revealed that M. haemolytica and P multocida primarily caused pasteurellosis in pneumonic goats in Bangladesh. Genomes may now be sequenced in a matter of weeks, leading to an influx of "hypothetical" proteins (HP) whose activities remain a mystery in GenBank. The information included inside these genes has quickly grown in prominence. Thus, we selected to look closely at the structure and function of an HP (AFF25514.1; 246 residues) from Pasteurella multocida (PM) subsp. multocida str. HN06. Possible insights into bacterial adaptation to new environments and metabolic changes might be gained by studying the functions of this protein. The PM HN06 2293 gene encodes an alkaline cytoplasmic protein with a molecular weight of 28352.60 Da, an isoelectric point (pI) of 9.18, and an overall average hydropathicity of around −0.565. One of its functional domains, tRNA (adenine (37)-N6)-methyltransferase TrmO, is a S -adenosylmethionine (SAM)-dependent methyltransferase (MTase), suggesting that it belongs to the Class VIII SAM-dependent MTase family. The tertiary structures represented by HHpred and I-TASSER models were found to be flawless. We predicted the model's active site using the Computed Atlas of Surface Topography of Proteins (CASTp) and FTSite servers, and then displayed it in 3 dimensional (3D) using PyMOL and BIOVIA Discovery Studio. Based on molecular docking (MD) results, we know that HP interacts with SAM and S -adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), 2 crucial metabolites in the tRNA methylation process, with binding affinities of 7.4 and 7.5 kcal/mol, respectively. Molecular dynamic simulations (MDS) of the docked complex, which included only modest structural adjustments, corroborated the strong binding affinity of SAM and SAH to the HP. Evidence for HP's possible role as an SAM-dependent MTase was therefore given by the findings of Multiple sequence alignment (MSA), MD, and molecular dynamic modeling. These in silico data suggest that the investigated HP might be used as a useful adjunct in the investigation of Pasteurella infections and the development of drugs to treat zoonotic pasteurellosis. An important factor affecting the performance of cattle is the satisfaction of animal needs in nutrients, macro- and microelements. High-yielding dairy cows with intense metabolism are especially sensitive to errors in feeding practices, because even minor nutritional or mineral deficiencies cause metabolic disorders leading to immunodeficiency conditions, reduced resistance to infectious agents and raised sensitivity to infections with pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms. Besides some infections, for example acute respiratory diseases, also result in metabolic disorders, immunosuppression, decrease in the overall resistance of the organism and ultimately in mixed infections. All this is the reason for low efficacy of vaccination against major infectious diseases. The paper presents the results of testing of plant tissue product «Vidoral», developed by the FSBEI HE Ural SAU for prevention of immunodeficiency conditions in cattle, caused by different factors. The product was injected subcutaneously at a dose of 0.025 ml/kg of live weight to cows in late gestation and calves showing mild anemia, low red blood cells counts, leukocytosis, high lymphocyte and monocyte counts and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, which suggest inflammatory processes in the animal body. Fourteen days post injection blood was collected for hematological and biochemical testing. It was demonstrated that the product restores the animal metabolism, improves hematopoiesis and reduces inflammation. It was established that injection of «Vidoral» in combination with vaccination against infectious rhinotracheitis, viral diarrhea, infection with respiratory syncytial virus and parainfluenza-3 virus induced generation of specific antibodies against the abovementioned infections.

The article describes a clinical case of an unfavorable course of pasteurellosis in a patient with liver cirrhosis. Possible variants of the clinical course, clinical and epidemiological data, on the basis of which pasteurellosis can be suspected, modern recommendations for antibiotic therapy are considered.

Abstract Background Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) infection can cause a series of diseases in different animals and cause huge economic losses to the breeding industry. P. multocida is considered to be one of the most significant pathogens in rabbits. In order to elucidate the pathogenic mechanism and innate immune response of P. multocida, an infection experiment was carried out in this study. Results Our results showed that the clinical symptoms of rabbits were severe dyspnoea and serous nasal fluid. During the course of the disease, the deaths peaked at 2 days post infection (dpi) and mortality rate was 60%. The pathological changes of the lung, trachea, and thymus were observed. In particular, consolidation and abscesses appeared in lung. Histopathologic changes in rabbits showed edema, hemorrhage, and neutrophil infiltration in the lung. P. multocida can rapidly replicate in a variety of tissues, and the colonization in most of the tested tissues reached the maximum at 2 dpi and then decreased at 3 dpi. The number of P. multocida in lung and thymus remained high level at 3 dpi. Toll-like receptors 2 and 4 signaling pathways were activated after P. multocida infection. The expression of Il1β, Il6, Il8, and Tnf-α was significantly increased. The expression of most proinflammatory cytokines peaked at 2 dpi and decreased at 3 dpi, and the expression trend of cytokines was consistent with the colonization of P. multocida in rabbit tissues. Conclusions The P. multocida can rapidly replicate in various tissues of rabbit and cause bacteremia after infection. TLRs signaling pathways were activated after P. multocida infection, significantly inducing the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, which is might the main cause of respiratory inflammation and septicemia.

Pasteurella multocida a Gram-negative bacterium exists as a commensal in the upper respiratory tracts of livestock, and poultry. It is causative agent of a range of diseases in mammals and birds including fowl cholera in poultry, atrophic rhinitis in pigs and bovine hemorrhagic septicemia in cattle and buffalo. This study aimed to isolate P. multocida from sheep and cattle lungs sampled and assessed by bacteriological procedures and pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) characterization. In this study 52 isolated of P. multocida were obtained (2016-2017) from clinically healthy and diseased animals (sheep and cattle) evaluated by PFGE for determining the relationship between them. According to the results of this study 12 sheep isolates had similarities above 94.00% and two cattle isolates showed similarities above 94.00%. When compared between sheep and cattle, most isolates showed a similarity of less than 50.00% indicating the great differences between isolates. It is noteworthy that in the present study, performed by PFGE to determine the type of P. multocida isolates, a very high distinction was made to determine the type of isolates and the relationship between isolates based on fragments in their genome using enzymes. The nursehound Scyliorhinus stellaris is a threatened shark species and its population in the Mediterranean Sea is declining. Programs for captive breeding and repopulation in marine protected areas (MPA) are being carried out. Unfortunately, pathogens may hinder conservation plans for this species. An impactful disease of marine animals, caused by the bacteria Photobacterium damselae, has been detected with increased frequency in recent decades in both farmed and marine animals. The aim of this work was to determine the cause of a disease outbreak in eight captive nursehounds that died after 18 months of captivity. Gross necropsy observations were indicative of a presumptive diagnosis of hemorrhagic septicemia. Histological and molecular techniques were performed, to diagnose the etiological agents that could be involved in their mortality. Genomes may now be sequenced in a matter of weeks, leading to an influx of "hypothetical" proteins (HP) whose activities remain a mystery in GenBank. The information included inside these genes has quickly grown in prominence. Thus, we selected to look closely at the structure and function of an HP (AFF25514.1; 246 residues) from Pasteurella multocida (PM) subsp. multocida str. HN06. Possible insights into bacterial adaptation to new environments and metabolic changes might be gained by studying the functions of this protein. The PM HN06 2293 gene encodes an alkaline cytoplasmic protein with a molecular weight of 28352.60 Da, an isoelectric point (pI) of 9.18, and an overall average hydropathicity of around -0.565. One of its functional domains, tRNA (adenine (37)-N6)-methyltransferase TrmO, is a S-adenosylmethionine (SAM)-dependent methyltransferase (MTase), suggesting that it belongs to the Class VIII SAM-dependent MTase family. The tertiary structures represented by HHpred and I-TASSER models were found to be flawless. We predicted the model's active site using the Computed Atlas of Surface Topography of Proteins (CASTp) and FTSite servers, and then displayed it in 3 dimensional (3D) using PyMOL and BIOVIA Discovery Studio. Based on molecular docking (MD) results, we know that HP interacts with SAM and S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), 2 crucial metabolites in the tRNA methylation process, with binding affinities of 7.4 and 7.5 kcal/mol, respectively. Molecular dynamic simulations (MDS) of the docked complex, which included only modest structural adjustments, corroborated the strong binding affinity of SAM and SAH to the HP. Evidence for HP's possible role as an SAM-dependent MTase was therefore given by the findings of Multiple sequence alignment (MSA), MD, and molecular dynamic modeling. These in silico data suggest that the investigated HP might be used as a useful adjunct in the investigation of Pasteurella infections and the development of drugs to treat zoonotic pasteurellosis. Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is an immobile, anaerobic, Gram-negative coccobacillus fermenting bacterium. This pathogen is commonly prevalent in the upper airways of healthy pets, such as cats and dogs, but was also confirmed in domestic cattle, rabbits, pigs, birds, and various wild animals. Infection in humans occurs as a result of biting, scratching, or licking by animals and contact with nasopharyngeal secretions. Inflammation at the site of infection develops within the first day from the injury. It is usually confined to the skin and subcutaneous tissue but, in particular situations, may spread to other organs and manifest as a severe systemic infection. Careful history-taking and microbiological confirmation of the infection enable diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Any wound resulting from an animal bite should be disinfected. The preferred and highly effective treatment against local P. multocida infection is penicillin or its derivatives. The prognosis for P. multocida infections depends on the infected site and the patient’s comorbidities.

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative, non-motile, oxidase positive, catalase positive, indole positive, urease negative, non-spore-forming coccobacillus. Animal bites, scratching, and licking are the most critical risk factors for Pasteurella infections, but it may also occur without any contact. Data about the prevalence of these infections in Turkey is limited because most cases apply to primary healthcare institutions where bacterial culture cannot be performed, and infections are treated empirically. Pasteurella multocida capsular types A, D, and F cause disease in many animal hosts, including bovine respiratory disease in cattle, which is one of the most globally significant animal diseases. Additionally, P. multocida capsular types B and E cause haemorrhagic septicaemia, a devastating disease primarily of cattle, water buffalo, and bison that develops rapidly with high mortality. Haemorrhagic septicaemia mostly occurs in developing countries and has potential to emerge elsewhere in the world. The diagnosis of haemorrhagic septicaemia currently requires recognition of compatible gross or histologic lesions and serotyping or molecular characterization of strains. In this study, we performed genomic characterization of 84 P. multocida strains, which were then used to develop and validate a matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) biomarker-based method for differentiating non-haemorrhagic septicaemia strains of P. multocida from haemorrhagic septicaemia-causing strains. Haemorrhagic septicaemia strain types B:2,5, E:2,5, and B:3,4 were used to maximize diversity. Three automated classification models were generated and then used to develop an assisted model, which utilized two peaks (6419 and 7729 m/z) to accurately differentiate non-haemorrhagic septicaemia-causing strains from haemorrhagic septicaemia-causing strains of P. multocida. The assisted model performed with 98.2 % accuracy for non-haemorrhagic septicaemia strains, 100 % accuracy for classic B:2,5 and E:2,5 strains, and 84.4 % accuracy for combined haemorrhagic septicaemia-causing strains (B:2,5, E:2,5, and B:3,4) with an overall accuracy of 96.9 %. We studied the influence of environmental factors on the prevalence and clinical manifestations of pasteurellosis in rabbits of the California and New Zealand breeds over a period of one year. It was found that the minimum temperatures in winter and the maximum in summer were out of the optimal values: 4-7 and 16-18ᴼС, respectively. The relative humidity during most of the year was out of the recommended levels / 60-70% /, both at the average and at the maximum measured values. The concentration of ammonia exceeded the average values by about 16 mg / m³, and the maximum values by about 30 mg / m³. The dust content varied from 0.9 to 6 mg / m³ with average values of 3.6 mg / m³. The total number of isolated microflora in m³ air was 6.83 x 10³ (6.5-7.3 x 10³). Dominant in the biological material and washes / from cages, walls and inventory / were the representatives of Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pasteurella and Colibacteria; and from the molds Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, Penicillium, Alternaria and Mucor. Antibodies against Pasteurella multocida were found in 60% of the population. Exacerbation of the disease and higher mortality was observed during pregnancy and during the suckling period. The main complications were - respiratory disorders (51%) followed by inflammation of the conjunctiva. About a quarter of the affected animals (26.4%) suffered from the mixed form of the disease. We found that Inflammation of the ears was extremely rare (0.2%). A relationship has been established between the number of environmental factors and the incidence of respiratory diseases. Pasteurella spp. are Gram-negative facultative bacteria that cause severe economic and animal losses. Pasteurella-based vaccines are the most promising solution for controlling Pasteurella spp. outbreaks. Remarkably, insufficient biomass cultivation (low cell viability and productivity) and lack of knowledge about the cultivation process have impacted the bulk production of animal vaccines. Bioprocess optimization in the shake flask and bioreactor is required to improve process efficiency while lowering production costs. However, its state of the art is limited in providing insights on its biomass upscaling, preventing a cost-effective vaccine with mass-produced bacteria from being developed. In general, in the optimum cultivation of Pasteurella spp., production factors such as pH (6.0–8.2), agitation speed (90–500 rpm), and temperature (35–40 °C) are used to improve production yield. Hence, this review discusses the production strategy of Pasteurella and Mannheimia species that can potentially be used in the vaccines for controlling pasteurellosis. The physicochemical factors related to operational parameter process conditions from a bioprocess engineering perspective that maximize yields with minimized production cost are also covered, with the expectation of facilitating the commercialization process. According to current concepts, ruminal and metabolic acidosis occur due to feeding cattle mainly with preserved acidic feeds such as silage and haylage. However, errors in feeding are not the only etiological factor leading to acidosis. In some cases, metabolic acidosis in cattle can develop along with respiratory infection caused by viral and bacterial agents. The main pathological processes resulting from acute respiratory diseases of cattle are bronchitises, tracheites and pneumonias. When the respiratory tract is affected in cattle, hypoxia occurs, causing intoxication and, thus, leading to ruminal acidosis. As a result, vasoactive substances (bacterial endotoxins, histamine, lactate) enter the bloodstream, the vascular endothelium is damaged due to the simultaneous expansion of arterioles and compression of venules, blood fluid is perfused from the vessels into the surrounding tissues, the blood flow in the microcirculatory bed is disrupted. An important role in the disturbance of blood circulation in small blood vessels is played by circulating immune complexes representing the «antigen-antibody» complex. Low molecular weight circulating immune complexes settle in various organs and tissues of the body, lead to inflammation and damage the normal tissue structure. Most frequently, immune complexes affect the endothelium of blood vessels, renal glomeruli and joints. Distal limb vessels are primarily affected in cattle, leading to disturbance of skin trophism of the limbs and hooves, development of laminitis, while the hoof horn is weakly keratinized and cannot resist aggressive mechanical and chemical environmental factors. Damaged hooves are the gateway of infection for the agents of necrobacteriosis (Fusobacterium necrophorum), staphylococcosis (Staphylococcus spp.), streptococcosis (Streptococcus spp.) and other pathogens. In addition, favorable conditions evolve for the development of mixed infection due to reduction in the overall organism resistance, which is observed for both respiratory and distal limb infections.

Background: Rodents are one of the most dangerous reservoirs and carriers of infectious diseases. Gradually, rats have become predominant in cities, sometimes staying in close vicinity to humans, pets and other animals. Consequently, they tend to increase the transmission risk of pathogens. Case Description: Here, we report an original case of bacterial pneumonia in a street rat (Rattus norvegicus). The rat was found dead on a street in the chief town of Marseille (France) after being run over by a car. The necropsy of the corpse revealed generalized granulomatous pneumonia in almost all the pulmonary lobes. Lung lesions, predominantly multiple fibro-inflammatory areas are preassembly to the witness of an infectious etiology. Bacterial isolation was performed from lung tissues. Colonies were identified by MALDI-TOF MS and confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing. The following bacteria were identified: Staphylococcus cohnii, Bordetella bronchiseptica, B. parapertussi, Corynebacterium glucuronolyticum, Pelistega suis and Rodentibacter rarus. Based on histopathological diagnosis and the avoidance approach, the most likely etiological agent of the pneumonia is therefore R. rarus, a little-known Pasteurellales bacterium that is closely related to R. pneumotropicus. Conclusion: These data emphasize the severity of R. rarus infection in rodents. Thus pointing out a potential risk for other animals (dogs, cats, birds) as well as humans. The health monitoring program for rodents and rabbits pasteurellosis should now include R. rarus. Therefore, the pathological effect of Rodentibacter species and/or strains needs to be better explored.

Infections secondary to Pasteurella multocida frequently occur in patients who have been exposed to domestic pets. Human infections caused by Pasteurella multocida vary in severity, and clinical features include localised cellulitis, osteomyelitis, systemic bacteraemia, meningitis and pneumonia. No vaccine has been developed against Pasteurella multocida; it is treated with antibacterial agents and, in most cases, surgical intervention. This article discusses the authors' experience in treating a woman with severe cellulitis and osteomyelitis on her hand caused by Pasteurella multocida. She refused surgical intervention and was successfully treated with honey-containing dressings and antibiotics after failure to heal following conservative treatment using conventional wound dressings combined with antibiotics. Background: Pasteurella multocida is a well-known gram-negative facultative anaerobe well known for its ability to cause soft tissue infections following animal bite or scratch. Here we present a case with mycotic aneurysm of the superficial femoral artery due to P. multocida infection.Case Presentation: A 62 year old male patient presented with worsening right leg pain and swelling. On examination, he was found to have profound swelling and erythema of the right medial thigh and tenderness to palpation. Computerized tomography showed findings suggestive of right femoral pseudoaneurysm with a large right medial thigh hematoma. Blood cultures grew P. multocida. Patient underwent emergent open resection of the mycotic aneurysm and vascular bypass surgery. Intraoperatively, the site was noted to be grossly infected with multiple pockets of pus which were drained and pus cultures grew P. multocida. The diagnosis of P. multocida bacteremia with right femoral mycotic aneurysm and thigh abscess was made. Patient received 6 weeks of intravenous ceftriaxone and recovered.Conclusion: Our case is the first report on infection of peripheral vessel with Pasteurella and highlights the importance of prompt surgical intervention and effective antibiotic treatment. Lumpfish is a novel farmed species used as cleaner fish for the removal of lice from farmed salmon. As often with new, farmed species, there are challenges with bacterial infections. The frequency of prescription of antibiotic agents to lumpfish is increasing, despite the lack of knowledge about appropriate doses, duration of treatment and application protocols for the various antibacterial agents. In the current study, we have tested the effect of medicated feed with florfenicol (FFC), oxolinic acid (OA) and flumequine (FLU) on lumpfish experimentally challenged with Vibrio anguillarum, atypical Aeromonas salmonicida and Pasteurella atlantica. We found that all three antibacterial agents efficiently treated lumpfish with vibriosis using 10 and 20 mg kg−1 day−1 of FFC, 25 mg kg−1 day−1 of OA and 25 mg kg−1 day−1 FLU, whereas only FFC (20 mg kg−1 day−1) had good effect on lumpfish with pasteurellosis. None of the antibacterial agents were efficient to treat lumpfish with atypical furunculosis. FFC 20 mg kg−1 day−1 showed promising results in the beginning of the experiment, but the mortality increased rapidly 14 days post‐medication. Efficient treatment is important for the welfare of lumpfish and for reducing the risk of development of antibiotic‐resistant bacteria. Pasteurellosis is one of the most serious bacterial diseases of rabbits, causes considerable economic damage in production systems worldwide and is a widely proven zoonosis with cases in humans infected by companion animals. The activated complement system causes lysis of various pathogenic microorganisms by the formation of the membrane attack complex. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the survivability of a virulent isolate of Pasteurella multocida type A to human serum complement activity. A female rabbit was referred as a clinical case of pneumonic pasteurellosis, a nasal swab was performed for isolation and identification. P. multocida was isolated in pure culture, characterized by standard biochemical identification tests, then challenged for 30 min at 37°C with normal serum and heatinactivated serum. Lysis by complement action had a significant reduction in the viability of the microorganism with respect to the culture challenged with inactivated complement (p< 0.05), however, a significant percentage 51.07 ± 1.70 % managed to evade complement lytic activity. In the context of health, it is concluded that the complement system offers partial protection against infections by P. multocida serotype A causing pneumonic pasteurellosis in rabbits. Pasteurellosis remains a major problem for poultry worldwide. The disease causes high mortality in chicken, affecting the livelihood of rural poultry farmers. In this paper, both deterministic and continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) models are formulated and analyzed to study the dynamics of pasteurellosis in chicken and wild birds. The next generation matrix method is adopted to determine the basic reproduction number for the deterministic model whereas the multitype branching process is used to compute stochastic threshold for the CTMC model. The normalized forward sensitivity index method is implemented to derive sensitivity indices of model parameters. The results show that the per capita recruitment rate of susceptible chicken and its infection rate due to direct contact are the most positive sensitive parameters, whereas the consumption rate of susceptible chicken by humans and the disease induced death rate are the most negative sensitive parameter. This suggests that infectious chicken drive the disease. Thus efforts on vaccinating and treating susceptible and infectious chicken respectively, will reduce the number of pasteurellosis cases in both chicken and wild bird populations. Numerical simulations for the CTMC stochastic model indicate that the solutions of CTMC stochastic model are relatively close to the solutions of the deterministic model. The probability of pasteurellosis extinction is high when it emerges from infectious birds unlike if it emerges from infectious chicken or P. multocida bacteria. Thus, any intervention that focuses on reducing the number of infectious chicken at the beginning of pasteurellosis outbreak is essential for reducing the transmission of pasteurellosis in chicken and wild birds.

The nursehound Scyliorhinus stellaris is a threatened shark species and its population in the Mediterranean Sea is declining. Programs for captive breeding and repopulation in marine protected areas (MPA) are being carried out. Unfortunately, pathogens may hinder conservation plans for this species. An impactful disease of marine animals, caused by the bacteria Photobacterium damselae, has been detected with increased frequency in recent decades in both farmed and marine animals. The aim of this work was to determine the cause of a disease outbreak in eight captive nursehounds that died after 18 months of captivity. Gross necropsy observations were indicative of a presumptive diagnosis of hemorrhagic septicemia. Histological and molecular techniques were performed, to diagnose the etiological agents that could be involved in their mortality. Phylogenetic analysis indicated the presence of P. damselae, identified as subsp. damselae by PCR-duplex, and Photobacterium swingsii in the analyzed captive nursehound Scyliorhinus stellaris.

In Italy, the use of autogenous inactivated vaccines prepared with the bacterial strains isolated from affected animals is authorized by the Ministry of Health in farms where bacterial diseases occur frequently. The autogenous vaccine performed using Pasteurella multocida is frequently used in rabbit farms, but the feedback of its application is not available. Therefore, the aim of this study is to give information about the impact on the clinical signs of a bivalent autogenous vaccine in rabbits of a genetic centre. The vaccine was prepared using two P. multocida strains belonging to serogroups A and F, equipped with virulence genes and responsible for cyclical outbreak of pasteurellosis in the farm. The vaccine was administered with a first injection, followed by another one after 15 days, then another one four months after the first injection, and then continuing with a further injection every six months to all rabbits. Clinical conditions and mortality rates were monitored for two years after the first vaccination. The improvement in clinical condition and the decrease of the mortality rate were significant especially in the first year post-vaccine. In addition, the number of animals removed due to the disease decreased greatly. Modern climatic changes, weakening of the anthropogenic pasture load, and an increase in steppe fires have led to the expansion and dominance of grasses (graminoids) vegetation on the steppe pastures of Russia and Kazakhstan since the end of the 20th century. This resulted in deterioration of the forage quality of pasture vegetation, a factor in the depression of the saiga population that may have affected the increase in cases of saiga die-offs. A die-off occurred in Kazakhstan in 2015, when about 200 000 animals died. A large number of different versions have been put forward about the reasons for these deaths: an infectious disease (hemorrhagic septicemia), toxic forage plants, unfavorable weather conditions, and the destructive effect of rocket fuel. In this article, we consider a different version of death associated with the negative effect of low-quality food on the sites of saiga death. It is shown that the food supply for saigas on steppe pastures consistently decreases with an increase in the abundance of grasses in forage vegetation. Suitable, nutritious food for breeding saigas include pastures in which the share of grasses in the aboveground phytomass is no more than 30%. If this level is exceeded, the pastures do not provide the necessary level of nutrition for breeding saigas and are unsuitable for them. It is possible that the saigas found themselves during spring migration in steppe regions with a predominance of turf grasses (65–75%), which exceeds their permissible (threshold) abundance (30%). This pasture condition did not provide the necessary nutrition, caused a weakening of animals during the rearing period, and promoted the activation of infectious septicemia in breeding saigas, which, with the combined action of both factors, may have led to their die-off. The use of cleaner fish as a delousing method in Norwegian salmonid aquaculture has increased tremendously over the last few years. This has led to the emergence of a new large industry of farming lumpsuckers (Cyclopterus lumpus L.). The use of lumpsuckers as cleaner fish has, however, not been problem‐free. Bacterial diseases cause high mortalities with pasteurellosis as one of the major emerging diseases. During the past few years, outbreaks of pasteurellosis in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) have become more frequent. This has led to an increasing concern that this disease will become common in salmon farming as well. The purpose of this study was to investigate the susceptibility of Atlantic salmon to Pasteurella spp. infection and the possibility of lumpsuckers transmitting pasteurellosis to Atlantic salmon. Atlantic salmon were experimentally challenged, either by bath or by cohabitation with challenged lumpsuckers, using two different strains of Pasteurella spp. (originating from lumpsucker and Atlantic salmon, respectively). No clinical signs of pasteurellosis were observed on any of the Atlantic salmon. The lumpsuckers were, however, equally susceptible to both isolates. The results of microbiological screening of various organs and tissues obtained from wild migratory birds (ducks) in order to detect the presence of Riemerella anatipestifer, as well as study the total microbial biocenosis, are presented in the work. During the research, 90 species of cultivated bacteria were identified as part of the biocenosis of the studied birds. This diversity was established due to the use of routine bacteriological methods and time-of-flight mass spectrometry - MALDI-ToF for the species identification of bacteria. The results obtained in the course of this work indicate that the migratory bird is the carrier and possible reservoir of the causative agent of riemerellosis - Riemerella anatipestifer.

Veterinary diagnostic labs (VDLs) are important service agencies providing essential diagnostic testing for a wide variety of domestic animal species as well as wildlife. They serve key roles in disease monitoring and diagnosis as well as surveillance for diseases of consequence. Of the many roles VDLs serve, one is being a member of the larger team of professionals dealing with the management of the bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex. VDLs provide a number of services related to the management of BRD. These include disease outbreak investigation, abnormal morbidity characterization, routine monitoring, and biosecurity screening for a variety of infectious agents via methods such as necropsy and histopathology, bacterial culture, antimicrobial sensitivity testing, virus isolation, and serological assays. VDLs continue to look for better methods and assays as instrumentation technology also grows and improves. This is reflected in the growing proliferation of molecular-based assays that provide a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. Professional staff in VDLs work in collaboration with those in academia and private industry to conduct basic research focusing on a different aspect of the BRD complex. It was shown that different serological variants of Pasteurella multocida bacteria accomplish a function of an etiological factor of pasteurellosis and haemorrhagic septicemia. They are characterized by different reservoirs and sources, routes and mechanisms of infectious agent transmission and it gives rise to epidemic processes of different ecological categories. Correspondingly, the control over pasteurellosis epidemic process is realized by satisfaction of animal needs by environmental conditions (dry bedding, satisfactory air exchange, time in the open air, etc.) and the control over haemorrhagic cepticemia epidemic process is realized by vaccination of production animals according to epizooto-logical showings and use of repellents and insecticides.

This report describes the prevalence, capsular type and virulence factors of Pasteurella multocida isolated from the respiratory tracts of healthy and diseased lambs. For this study, five hundred and ninety-eight fattening lambs from different feedlots of the community of Extremadura were analysed. Isolation and identification of P. multocida were performed using conventional bacteriological and biochemical techniques, while confirmation of P. multocida identification, capsular type and virulence factors was done using the polymerase chain reaction technique (PCR). Of 598 studied lambs (410 clinically healthy and 188 diseased sheep), P. multocida was isolated from 37 animals (6.2%), with prevalence rates of 0.49% (2/410) in healthy lambs and 18.62% (35/188) in diseased lambs confirming a close relationship between the presence of bacteria and disease. Capsular typing of P. multocida isolates demonstrated two capsular types: A (15) and D (22), with general prevalence rates of 40.5% and 59.5%, respectively, and with the exclusive presence of type D in healthy animals (100%) and types D and A among diseased animals (42.9% and 57.1%, respectively). Among four virulence genes investigated (pfhA, hgbB, tbpA and toxA), we found a remarkable high prevalence of tbpA (100%) (37/37) genes in P. multocida; toxA was only detected in some diseased lambs (11/37), while the rest of the studied genes were not detected. The high prevalence of toxA among isolates from diseased animals may imply an important role of this gene in the virulence of P. multocida isolates in sheep, especially in diseased lambs.

A case of fatal Pasteurellosis infection in a 2-month-old rabbit is described. Pasteurellosis is considered one of the most important diseases of rabbits and has been reported as a constant serious and highly contagious disease of domestic rabbits. Before death, the main clinical signs observed were rhinitis with nasal discharge, abdominal breathing and coughing. At necropsy, pathological findings revealed severe pleuropneumonia with the accumulation of a remarkable amount of fibrinopurulent exudate in the thoracic cavity, serous rhinitis and tracheitis. A bacterial isolate from lungs was identified as Pasteurella multocida serotype A. The present study describes the histopathological lesions associated with P. multocida infection in a pet rabbit brought to visit with respiratory signs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
