Line intensity mapping (LIM) serves as a potent probe in astrophysics, relying on the statistical analysis of integrated spectral line emissions originating from distant star-forming galaxies. While LIM observations hold the promise of achieving a broad spectrum of scientific objectives, a significant hurdle for future experiments lies in distinguishing the targeted spectral line emitted at a specific redshift from undesired line emissions originating at different redshifts. The presence of these interloping lines poses a challenge to the accuracy of cosmological analyses. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to quantify line–line cross-correlations (LIM-LLX), enabling us to investigate the target signal amid instrumental noise and interloping emissions. For example, at a redshift of z ∼ 3.7, we observed that the measured auto-power spectrum of C ii 158 exhibited substantial bias, from interloping line emission. However, cross-correlating C ii 158 with CO(6–5) lines using an FYST-like experiment yielded a promising result, with a signal-to-noise ratio of ∼10. This measurement is notably unbiased. Additionally, we explore the extensive capabilities of cross-correlation by leveraging various CO transitions to probe the tomographic Universe at lower redshifts through LIM-LLX. We further demonstrate that incorporating low-frequency channels, such as 90 and 150 GHz, into FYST's EoR-Spec-like experiment can maximize the potential for cross-correlation studies, effectively reducing the bias introduced by instrumental noise and interlopers. In this paper, we have performed a comparative study of different types of oscillating dark energy (DE) models using the Metropolis algorithm of Markov Chain Monte Carlo. Eight different oscillating parameterizations are examined herein that have demonstrated considerable ability to fit the overall cosmological observations, including the Pantheon sample of Type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, cosmic chronometer Hubble data, and distance priors of the Planck cosmic microwave background. In order to compare the consistency of these models with observations, we have used both the Akaike and deviance information criteria. Although the values of the Akaike information criterion for different models indicate that there is no support for oscillating DE models, the deviance information criterion showed that there is significant support for some of these models. Our results showed that these models are capable of solving the cosmic coincidence problem and alleviating the Hubble tension. Comparing the H 0 values obtained for different oscillating scenarios with that of ΛCDM, we observed that our oscillating models led to H 0 ¯ = 69.78 , which is 0.29 greater than H 0,Λ and thus reduces the Hubble tension. Among all of the models, model 1, with H 0 = 70.00 ± 0.71, is the most capable of alleviating the H 0 tension. Furthermore, we examined our models assuming H 0 = 73.0 ± 1.4 from SHoES measurements. We find that adding this data point to our data combination led to a Δ H 0 ¯ = 0.95 increase in the H 0 value for different models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present tomographic measurements of structure growth using cross-correlations of Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) DR6 and Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing maps with the unWISE Blue and Green galaxy samples, which span the redshift ranges 0.2 ≲ z ≲ 1.1 and 0.3 ≲ z ≲ 1.8, respectively. We improve on prior unWISE cross-correlations not just by making use of the new, high-precision ACT DR6 lensing maps, but also by including additional spectroscopic data for redshift calibration and by analyzing our measurements with a more flexible theoretical model. We determine the amplitude of matter fluctuations at low redshifts (z ≃ 0.2–1.6), finding S 8 ≡ σ 8 (Ω m / 0.3) 0.5 = 0.813 ± 0.021 using the ACT cross-correlation alone and S 8 = 0.810 ± 0.015 with a combination of Planck and ACT cross-correlations; these measurements are fully consistent with the predictions from primary CMB measurements assuming standard structure growth. The addition of baryon acoustic oscillation data breaks the degeneracy between σ 8 and Ω m , allowing us to measure σ 8 = 0.813 ± 0.020 from the cross-correlation of unWISE with ACT and σ 8 = 0.813 ± 0.015 from the combination of cross-correlations with ACT and Planck. These results also agree with the expectations from primary CMB extrapolations in ΛCDM cosmology; the consistency of σ 8 derived from our two redshift samples at z ∼ 0.6 and 1.1 provides a further check of our cosmological model. Several ongoing and upcoming large-scale structure surveys aim to explore the nonlinear regime of structure formation with high precision. Making reliable cosmological inferences from these observations necessitates precise theoretical modeling of the mildly nonlinear regime. In this work we explore how the choice of nonlinear prescription would impact parameter estimation from cosmic shear measurements for a Euclid-like survey. Specifically, we employ two different nonlinear prescriptions of halofit and the Effective Field Theory of the Large Scale Structure and compare their measurements for the three different cosmological scenarios of ΛCDM, w CDM, and (w 0, w a ) CDM. We also investigate the impact of different nonlinear cutoff schemes on parameter estimation. We find that the predicted errors on most parameters shrink considerably as smaller scales are included in the analysis, with the amount depending on the nonlinear prescription and the cutoff scheme used. We use predictions from the halofit model to analyze the mock data from DarkSky N -body simulations and quantify the parameter bias introduced in the measurements due to the choice of nonlinear prescription. IntroductionGalaxy cluster lensing is a powerful tool for measuring the mass of galaxy clusters, but accurate shear measurement and calibration are critical to obtaining reliable results. This study focuses on the measurement and calibration of weak lensing shears to improve mass estimates in cluster lensing. To deal with the problem, we first developed an image simulation pipeline, jedisim, which utilizes galaxy images extracted from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Ultra Deep Field (UDF) and the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS).MethodsThe simulations represent realistic galaxy distributions and morphologies as input sources. The foreground halo with a Navarro–Frenk–White (NFW) profile is constructed such that the lensing signals of background galaxies can be measured by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Science Pipelines. By comparing the measured reduced shear gmeas and the true reduced shear gtrue, we observe non-linearity up to g≲0.6. We fit polynomials to the data with quadratic correction adequate to g≲0.4. Meanwhile, we conduct mass estimates using the pzmassfitter code on four different clusters.ResultsThe mass estimate results are significantly improved after applying the shear calibration derived from the present work—from 4.954±0.504×1014M⊙ to 10.507±0.498×1014M⊙ after calibration for a simulated cluster with the mass of 10×1014M⊙. In multiple cases of validation, the estimated results are all consistent with true cluster mass.DiscussionThis study yields the first relationship between reality and shape measurement of the LSST Science Pipelines and serves as the first step toward the overall goal of mass calibration in cluster lensing. By addressing the challenges in shear measurement and calibration, we aim to enhance the accuracy and reliability of mass estimates in galaxy cluster lensing studies.

The giant spiral galaxy M101 is host to the nearest recent Type Ia supernova (SN 2011fe) and thus has been extensively monitored in the near-infrared to study the late-time light curve of the SN. Leveraging this existing baseline of observations, we derive the first Mira-based distance to M101 by discovering and classifying a sample of 211 Miras with periods ranging from 240–400 days in the SN field. Combined with new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR channel observations, our data set totals 11 epochs of F110W (HST YJ) and 13 epochs of F160W (HST H) data spanning ∼2900 days. We adopt absolute calibrations of the Mira period–luminosity relation based on geometric distances to the Large Magellanic Cloud and the water megamaser host galaxy NGC 4258, and find μ M101 = 29.10 ± 0.06 mag. This distance is in 1 σ agreement with most other recent Cepheid and tip of the red giant branch distance measurements to M101. Including the previous Mira SN Ia host, NGC 1559, and SN 2005df, we determine the fiducial SN Ia peak luminosity, M B 0 = − 19.27 ± 0.09 mag. With the Hubble diagram of supernovae Ia, we derive H 0 = 72.37 ± 2.97 km s−1 Mpc−1, a 4.1% measurement of H 0 using Miras. We find excellent agreement with recent Cepheid distance ladder measurements of H 0 and confirm previous indications that the local universe value of H 0 is higher than the early universe value at ∼95% confidence. A critical discussion on the H 0 Hubble constant tension is presented by considering both early and late-type observations. From recent precise measurements, discrepancies emerge when comparing results for some cosmological quantities obtained at different redshifts. We highlight the most relevant measurements of H 0 and propose potential ideas to solve its tension. These solutions concern the exploration of new physics beyond the Λ CDM model or the evaluation of H 0 by other methods. In particular, we focus on the role of the look-back time. One of main sources of uncertainty in modern cosmology is the present rate of the universe's expansion, H0, called the Hubble constant. Once again, different observational techniques bring about different results, causing new "Hubble tension". In the present work, we review the historical roots of the Hubble constant from the beginning of the twentieth century, when modern cosmology originated, to the present. We develop the arguments that gave rise to the importance of measuring the expansion of the Universe and its discovery, and we describe the different pioneering works attempting to measure it. There has been a long dispute on this matter, even in the present epoch, which is marked by high-tech instrumentation and, therefore, in smaller uncertainties in the relevant parameters. We present a tentative constraint on cosmological parameters Ωm and σ8 from a joint analysis of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing from DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys Data Release 9 (DR9), covering approximately 10000 square degrees and spanning the redshift range of 0.1 to 0.9. To study the dependence of cosmological parameters on lens redshift, we divide lens galaxies into seven approximately volume-limited samples, each with an equal width in photometric redshift. To retrieve the intrinsic projected correlation function wp(rp) from the lens samples, we employ a novel method to account for redshift uncertainties. Additionally, we measured the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal ΔΣ(rp) for each lens sample, using source galaxies selected from the shear catalog by applying our Fourier_Quad pipeline to DR9 images. We model these observables within the flat ACDM framework, employing the minimal bias model. To ensure the reliability of the minimal bias model, we apply conservative scale cuts: rp > 8 and 12 h−1Mpc, for wp(rp) and ΔΣ(rp), respectively. Our findings suggest a mild tendency that S 8 ≡ σ 8 Ω m / 0.3 increases with lens redshift, although this trend is only marginally significant. When we combine low redshift samples, the value of S8 is determined to be 0.84 ± 0.02, consistent with the Planck results but significantly higher than the 3× 2pt analysis by 2–5σ. Despite the fact that further refinements in measurements and modeling could improve the accuracy of our results, the consistency with standard values demonstrates the potential of our method for more precise and accurate cosmology in the future. We present the Simple Intensity Map Producer for Line Emission (Simple), a public code for quickly simulating mock line-intensity maps, and an analytical framework for modeling intensity maps including observational effects. Simple can be applied to any spectral line sourced by galaxies. The Simple code is based on lognormal mock catalogs of galaxies including positions and velocities and assigns luminosities following the luminosity function. After applying a selection function to distinguish between detected and undetected galaxies, the code generates an intensity map, which can be modified with anisotropic smoothing, noise, a mask, and sky subtraction, and it calculates the power spectrum multipoles. We show that the intensity auto-power spectrum and the galaxy-intensity cross-power spectrum agree well with the analytical estimates in real space. We derive and show that the sky subtraction suppresses the intensity autopower spectrum and the cross-power spectrum on scales larger than the size of an individual observation. As an example application, we make forecasts for the sensitivity of an intensity mapping experiment similar to the Hobby–Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) to the cross-power spectrum of Ly α -emitting galaxies and the Ly α intensity. We predict that HETDEX will measure the galaxy-intensity cross-power spectrum with a high signal-to-noise ratio on scales of 0.04 h Mpc−1 < k < 1 h Mpc−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, using the latest Pantheon+ sample of Type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillation measurements, and observational Hubble data, we carry out a joint constraint on the Hubble constant H 0, the spatial curvature ΩK, and the sound horizon at the end of the drag epoch r d. To be model-independent, four cosmography models—i.e., the Taylor series in terms of redshift y 1 = z /(1 + z), y 2 = arctan (z) , y 3 = ln (1 + z) , and the Padé approximants—are used without the assumption of a flat Universe. The results show that H 0 is anticorrelated with ΩK and r d, indicating that smaller ΩK or r d would be helpful in alleviating the Hubble tension. The values of H 0 and r d are consistent with the estimate derived from the Planck cosmic microwave background data based on the flat ΛCDM model, but H 0 is in 2.3 ∼ 3.0 σ tension with that obtained by Riess et al. in all these cosmographic approaches. Meanwhile, a flat Universe is preferred by the present observations under all approximations except the third order of y 1 and y 2 of the Taylor series. Furthermore, according to the values of the Bayesian evidence, we found that the flat ΛCDM remains to be the most favored model by the joint data sets, and the Padé approximant of order (2,2), the third order of y 3 and y 1 are the top three cosmographic expansions that fit the data sets best, while the Taylor series in terms of y 2 are essentially ruled out. The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) is a telescope array that observes the cosmic microwave background over 75% of the sky from the Atacama Desert, Chile, at frequency bands centered near 40, 90, 150, and 220 GHz. This paper describes the CLASS data pipeline and maps for 40 GHz observations conducted from 2016 August to 2022 May. We demonstrate how well the CLASS survey strategy, with rapid (∼10 Hz) front-end modulation, recovers the large-scale Galactic polarization signal from the ground: the mapping transfer function recovers ∼67% (85%) of EE and BB (VV) power at ℓ = 20 and ∼35% (47%) at ℓ = 10. We present linear and circular polarization maps over 75% of the sky. Simulations based on the data imply the maps have a white noise level of 110 μ K arcmin and correlated noise component rising at low- ℓ as ℓ −2.4. The transfer-function-corrected low- ℓ component is comparable to the white noise at the angular knee frequencies of ℓ ≈ 18 (linear polarization) and ℓ ≈ 12 (circular polarization). Finally, we present simulations of the level at which expected sources of systematic error bias the measurements, finding subpercent bias for the Λ cold dark matter EE power spectra. Bias from E -to- B leakage due to the data reduction pipeline and polarization angle uncertainty approaches the expected level for an r = 0.01 BB power spectrum. Quantifying the connection between galaxies and their host dark matter halos has been key for testing cosmological models on various scales. Below M ⋆ ∼ 109 M ⊙, such studies have primarily relied on the satellite galaxy population orbiting the Milky Way (MW). Here we present new constraints on the connection between satellite galaxies and their host dark matter subhalos using the largest sample of satellite galaxies in the Local Volume (D ≲ 12 Mpc) to date. We use 250 confirmed and 71 candidate dwarf satellites around 27 MW-like hosts from the Exploration of Local VolumE Satellites (ELVES) Survey and use the semianalytical SatGen model for predicting the population of dark matter subhalos expected in the same volume. Through a Bayesian model comparison of the observed and the forward-modeled satellite stellar mass functions (SSMFs), we infer the satellite stellar-to-halo mass relation. We find that the observed SSMF is best reproduced when subhalos at the low-mass end are populated by a relation of the form M ⋆ ∝ M peak α , with a moderate slope of α const = 2.10 ± 0.01 and a low scatter, constant as a function of the peak halo mass, of σ const = 0.06 − 0.05 + 0.07 . A model with a steeper slope (α grow = 2.39 ± 0.06) and a scatter that grows with decreasing M peak is also consistent with the observed SSMF but is not required. Our new model for the satellite–subhalo connection, based on hundreds of Local Volume satellite galaxies, is in line with what was previously derived using only MW satellites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The J-region Asymptotic Giant Branch (JAGB) method is a standard candle based on the intrinsic luminosities of carbon stars in the near-infrared. We directly constrain the impact of metallicity, age, and reddening on the JAGB method. We assess how the mode, skew, and spread of the JAGB star LF change throughout diverse stellar environments in M31's NE disk from 13 < d < 18 kpc using data from the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT). As expected, the mode is found to be fainter in higher-reddening regions. To cross-check this result, we also measure a fiducial J -band ground-based JAGB distance using data from the UKIRT/WFCam in M31's outermost disk (18 < d < 40 kpc) where internal reddening is minimal. We find that this J -band distance modulus agrees well with the F110W distance moduli measured in the lowest-reddening regions of the PHAT data, demonstrating the JAGB method is most accurate if measured in the low-reddening outer disks of galaxies. On the other hand, the mode of the JAGB star LF appears empirically to show no dependence on age or metallicity within the range −0.18 < [M/H] < −0.26 dex. In conclusion, the JAGB method proves to be a robust standard candle capable of calibrating the luminosities of Type Ia supernovae and therefore providing a high-accuracy, high-precision measurement of the Hubble constant. This paper is intended to review the consequences of assuming tachyon scalar field as a candidate for dark energy from dynamical system technique and observational cosmology point of views. In the contexts of general relativity and teleparallel gravity, a variety of non-minimally coupled tachyon fields have been taken into consideration. These models provide us subclasses of scalar-tensor and scalar-torsion theories. This review covers the tachyonic chameleon, the non-minimally coupled tachyon field to the Gauss–Bonnet invariant and the tachyonic teleparallel dark energy models. Large imaging surveys will rely on photometric redshifts (photo- z 's), which are typically estimated through machine-learning methods. Currently planned spectroscopic surveys will not be deep enough to produce a representative training sample for Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), so we seek methods to improve the photo- z estimates that arise from nonrepresentative training samples. Spectroscopic training samples for photo- z 's are biased toward redder, brighter galaxies, which also tend to be at lower redshift than the typical galaxy observed by LSST, leading to poor photo- z estimates with outlier fractions nearly 4 times larger than for a representative training sample. In this Letter, we apply the concept of training sample augmentation, where we augment simulated nonrepresentative training samples with simulated galaxies possessing otherwise unrepresented features. When we select simulated galaxies with ( g - z ) color, i -band magnitude, and redshift outside the range of the original training sample, we are able to reduce the outlier fraction of the photo- z estimates for simulated LSST data by nearly 50% and the normalized median absolute deviation (NMAD) by 56%. When compared to a fully representative training sample, augmentation can recover nearly 70% of the degradation in the outlier fraction and 80% of the degradation in NMAD. Training sample augmentation is a simple and effective way to improve training samples for photo- z 's without requiring additional spectroscopic samples.

In this Letter, we propose a model-independent method to determine the Hubble constant and curvature simultaneously by taking advantage of the possibilities of future spaceborne gravitational-wave detector DECIGO in combination with the radio quasars as standard rulers. Similarly to the redshift drift in the electromagnetic domain, accelerating expansion of the Universe causes a characteristic phase correction to the gravitational waveform detectable by DECIGO. Hence, one would be able to extract the Hubble parameter H ( z ). This could be used to recover a distance–redshift relation supported by the data not relying on any specific cosmological model. Assuming the FLRW metric and using intermediate-luminosity radio quasars as standard rulers, one achieves an interesting opportunity to directly assess the H _0 and Ω _k parameters. To test this method, we simulated a set of acceleration parameters achievable by future DECIGO. Based on the existing sample of 120 intermediate-luminosity radio quasars calibrated as standard rulers, we simulated much bigger samples of such standard rulers possible to obtain with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). In the case of ( N = 100) of radio quasars, which is the size of the currently available sample, the precision of the cosmological parameters determined would be ${\sigma }_{{H}_{0}}=2.74$ km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 and ${\sigma }_{{{\rm{\Omega }}}_{k}}=0.175$ . In the optimistic scenario ( N = 1000) achievable by VLBI, the precision of H _0 would be improved to 1%, which is comparable to the result of ${\sigma }_{{H}_{0}}=0.54$ km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 from Planck 2018 TT, TE, EE+lowE+lensing data, and the precision of Ω _k would be 0.050. Our results demonstrate that such combined analysis, possible in the future, could be helpful in solving the current cosmological issues concerning the Hubble tension and cosmic curvature tension.

We systematically explore the influence of the prior of the peak absolute magnitude ( M ) of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) on the measurement of the Hubble constant ( H _0 ) from SNe Ia observations. We consider five different data-motivated M priors, representing varying levels of dispersion, and assume the spatially flat ΛCDM cosmological model. Different M priors lead to relative changes in the mean values of H _0 from 2% to 7%. Loose priors on M yield H _0 estimates consistent with both the Planck 2018 result and the SH0ES result at the 68% confidence level. We also examine the potential impact of peculiar velocity subtraction on the value of H _0 and show that it is insignificant for the SNe Ia observations with redshift z > 0.01 used in our analyses. We also repeat the analysis in the cosmography model and find very similar results. This suggests that our results are robust and model independent.

We analyze the cool gas in and around 14 nearby galaxies (at z < 0.1) mapped with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV MaNGA survey by measuring absorption lines produced by gas in spectra of background quasars/active galactic nuclei at impact parameters of 0–25 effective radii from the galactic centers. Using Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, we detect absorption at the galactic redshift and measure or constrain column densities of neutral (H i, N i, O i, and Ar i), low-ionization (Si ii, S ii, C ii, N ii, and Fe ii), and high-ionization (Si iii, Fe iii, N v, and O vi) species for 11 galaxies. We derive the ionization parameter and ionization-corrected metallicity using cloudy photoionization models. The H i column density ranges from ∼1013 to ∼1020 cm−2 and decreases with impact parameter for r ≳ R e . Galaxies with higher stellar mass have weaker H i absorption. Comparing absorption velocities with MaNGA radial velocity maps of ionized gas line emissions in galactic disks, we find that the neutral gas seen in absorption corotates with the disk out to ∼10 R e . Sight lines with lower elevation angles show lower metallicities, consistent with the metallicity gradient in the disk derived from MaNGA maps. Higher-elevation angle sight lines show higher ionization, lower H i column density, supersolar metallicity, and velocities consistent with the direction of galactic outflow. Our data offer the first detailed comparisons of circumgalactic medium (CGM) properties (kinematics and metallicity) with extrapolations of detailed galaxy maps from integral field spectroscopy; similar studies for larger samples are needed to more fully understand how galaxies interact with their CGM. The lensing effect of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is a powerful tool for our study of the distribution of matter in the universe. The quadratic estimator (QE) method, which is widely used to reconstruct lensing potential, has been known to be suboptimal for the low noise level polarization data from next-generation CMB experiments. To improve the performance of the reconstruction, other methods, such as the maximum-likelihood estimator and machine-learning algorithms, have been developed. In this work, we present a deep convolutional neural network model named the Residual Dense Local Feature U-net (RDLFUnet) for reconstructing the CMB lensing convergence field. By simulating lensed CMB data with different noise levels to train and test network models, we find that for noise levels less than 5 μ K-arcmin, RDLFUnet can recover the input gravitational potential with a higher signal-to-noise ratio than the previous deep-learning and traditional QE methods at almost the entire observation scale. The introduction of deep wide-field surveys in recent years and the adoption of machine-learning techniques have led to the discoveries of  (10 4) strong gravitational lensing systems and candidates. However, the discovery of multiply-lensed transients remains a rarity. Lensed transients and especially lensed supernovae are invaluable tools to cosmology because they allow us to constrain cosmological parameters via lens modeling and the measurements of their time delays. In this paper, we develop a pipeline to perform a targeted lensed transient search. We apply this pipeline to 5807 strong lenses and candidates, which were identified in the literature, in the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys Data Release 9 (DR9) footprint. For each system, we analyze every exposure in all of the observed bands (DECam g, r, and z). Our pipeline finds, groups, and ranks detections that are in sufficient proximity temporally and spatially. After the first round of inspection, for promising candidate systems, we further examine the newly available DR10 data (with additional i and Y bands). Here we present our targeted lensed supernova search pipeline and seven new lensed supernova candidates, including a very likely lensed supernova—probably a Type Ia—in a system with an Einstein radius of ∼1.″5. In this article, we compare different formulations of the number count prescription using the convenient formalism of the Geodesic-Light-Cone gauge. As cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons traverse the universe, anisotropies can be induced via Thomson scattering (proportional to the electron density; optical depth) and inverse Compton scattering (proportional to the electron pressure; thermal Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect). Measurements of anisotropy in optical depth τ and Compton y parameters are imprinted by the galaxies and galaxy clusters and are thus sensitive to the thermodynamic properties of the circumgalactic medium and intergalactic medium. We use an analytic halo model to predict the power spectrum of the optical depth (τ τ), the cross-correlation between the optical depth and the Compton y parameter (τ y), and the cross-correlation between the optical depth and galaxy clustering (τ g), and compare this model to cosmological simulations. We constrain the optical depths of halos at z ≲ 3 using a technique originally devised to constrain patchy reionization at a higher redshift range. The forecasted signal-to-noise ratio is 2.6, 8.5, and 13, respectively, for a CMB-S4-like experiment and a Vera C. Rubin Observatory–like optical survey. We show that a joint analysis of these probes can constrain the amplitude of the density profiles of halos to 6.5% and the pressure profiles to 13%. These constraints translate to astrophysical parameters, such as the gas mass fraction, f g, which can be constrained to 5.3% uncertainty at z ∼ 0. The cross-correlations presented here are complementary to other CMB and galaxy cross-correlations since they do not require spectroscopic galaxy redshifts and are another example of how such correlations are a powerful probe of the astrophysics of galaxy evolution. We present details on the observing strategy, data-processing techniques, and spectroscopic targeting algorithms for the first three years of operation for the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN). This five-year program using the Dark Energy Camera mounted on the 4 m Blanco telescope in Chile was designed to discover and follow supernovae (SNe) Ia over a wide redshift range (0.05 < z < 1.2) to measure the equation-of-state parameter of dark energy. We describe the SN program in full: Strategy, observations, data reduction, spectroscopic follow-up observations, and classification. From three seasons of data, we have discovered 12,015 likely SNe, 308 of which have been spectroscopically confirmed, including 251 SNe Ia over a redshift range of 0.017 < z < 0.85. We determine the effective spectroscopic selection function for our sample and use it to investigate the redshiftdependent bias on the distance moduli of SNe Ia we have classified. The data presented here are used for the first cosmology analysis by DES-SN ("DES-SN3YR"), the results of which are given in Dark Energy Survey Collaboration et al. The 489 spectra that are used to define the DES-SN3YR sample are publicly available at https://des.ncsa.illinois.edu/releases/sn.

A critical discussion on the H0 Hubble constant tension is presented by considering both early and late-type observations. From recent precise measurements, discrepancies emerge when comparing results for some cosmological quantities obtained at different redshifts. We highlight the most relevant measurements of H0 and propose potential ideas to solve its tension. These solutions concern the exploration of new physics beyond the ΛCDM model or the evaluation of H0 by other methods. In particular, we focus on the role of the look-back time.

JWST observations have recently begun delivering the first samples of Ly α velocity profile measurements at z > 6, opening a new window into the reionization process. Interpretation of z ≳ 6 line profiles is currently stunted by limitations in our knowledge of the intrinsic Ly α profile (before encountering the intergalactic medium (IGM)) of the galaxies that are common at z ≳ 6. To overcome this shortcoming, we have obtained resolved ( R ∼ 3900) Ly α spectroscopy of 42 galaxies at z = 2.1–3.4 with similar properties as are seen at z > 6. We quantify a variety of Ly α profile statistics as a function of [O iii ]+H β equivalent width (EW). Our spectra reveal a new population of z ≃ 2–3 galaxies with large [O iii ]+H β EWs (>1200 Å) and a large fraction of Ly α flux emerging near the systemic redshift (peak velocity ≃0 km s ^−1 ). These spectra indicate that low-density neutral hydrogen channels are able to form in a subset of low-mass galaxies (≲1 × 10 ^8 M _⊙ ) that experience a burst of star formation (sSFR > 100 Gyr ^−1 ). Other extreme [O iii ] emitters show weaker Ly α that is shifted to higher velocities (≃240 km s ^−1 ) with little emission near the line center. We investigate the impact the IGM is likely to have on these intrinsic line profiles in the reionization era, finding that the centrally peaked Ly α emitters should be strongly attenuated at z ≳ 5. We show that these line profiles are particularly sensitive to the impact of resonant scattering from infalling IGM and can be strongly attenuated even when the IGM is highly ionized at z ≃ 5. We compare these expectations against a new database of z ≳ 6.5 galaxies with robust velocity profiles measured with JWST/NIRSpec.

In our previous study, we introduced a machine learning technique, namely Cosmic Microwave Background Foreground Subtraction with Convolutional Neural Networks ( CMBFSCNN ), for the removal of foreground contamination in cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization data. This method was successfully employed on actual observational data from the Planck mission. In this study, we extend our investigation by considering the CMB lensing effect in simulated data and utilizing the CMBFSCNN approach to recover the CMB lensing B-mode power spectrum from multifrequency observational maps. Our method is first applied to simulated data with the performance of the CMB-S4 experiment. We achieve reliable recovery of the noisy CMB Q (or U ) maps with a mean absolute difference of 0.016 ± 0.008 μ K (or 0.021 ± 0.002 μ K) for the CMB-S4 experiment. To address the residual instrumental noise in the foreground-cleaned map, we employ a “half-split maps” approach, where the entire data set is divided into two segments sharing the same sky signal but having uncorrelated noise. Using cross-correlation techniques between two recovered half-split maps, we effectively reduce instrumental noise effects at the power spectrum level. As a result, we achieve precise recovery of the CMB EE and lensing B-mode power spectra. Furthermore, we also extend our pipeline to full-sky simulated data with the performance of the LiteBIRD experiment. As expected, various foregrounds are cleanly removed from the foregrounds contamination observational maps, and recovered EE and lensing B-mode power spectra exhibit excellent agreement with the true results. Finally, we discuss the dependency of our method on the foreground models.

Improved polarization measurements at frequencies below 70 GHz with degree-level angular resolution are crucial for advancing our understanding of the Galactic synchrotron radiation and the potential polarized anomalous microwave emission and ultimately benefiting the detection of primordial B modes. In this study, we present sensitivity-improved 40 GHz polarization maps obtained by combining the CLASS 40 GHz and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) Q -band data through a weighted average in the harmonic domain. The decision to include WMAP Q -band data stems from similarities in the bandpasses. Leveraging the accurate large-scale measurements from the WMAP Q band and the high-sensitivity information from the CLASS 40 GHz band at intermediate scales, the noise level at ℓ ∈ [30, 100] is reduced by a factor of 2–3 in the map space. A pixel domain analysis of the polarized synchrotron spectral index ( β _s ) using the WMAP K band and the combined maps (mean and 16th/84th percentiles across the β _s map: $-{3.08}_{-0.20}^{+0.20}$ ) reveals a stronger preference for spatial variation (probability to exceed for a uniform β _s hypothesis smaller than 0.001) than the results obtained using WMAP K and Ka bands ( $-{3.08}_{-0.14}^{+0.14}$ ). The cross-power spectra of the combined maps follow the same trend as other low-frequency data, and validation through simulations indicates negligible bias introduced by the combination method (subpercent level in the power spectra). Observations of large amounts of massive galaxies with relatively old populations found at high redshifts are challenging galaxy formation scenarios within the standard cosmology. Precise determinations of the average age of these galaxies would be useful for the discussion of this problem. Here we carry out a better constraint of the age of 200 V-shaped spectral energy distribution (SED) nonactive galactic nucleus galaxies at redshifts 2 < z < 4 of the catalog of the FourStar Galaxy Evolution Survey, identified by the V shape in their SED with a Lyman and a Balmer break. The SED fitting includes a main stellar population in addition to a residual younger population and extinction. The galaxies are younger at a higher redshift on average. However, for the galaxies with z > 2.5, we do not see a significant evolution of their average age, with all average ages of the galaxies mostly remaining between 1 and 2 Gyr. Our research finds that most massive galaxies (∼10 ^10 M _⊙ ) are older (typically > ∼1 Gyr old) and formed earlier than less massive galaxies in our sample.

The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) is a telescope array that observes the cosmic microwave background (CMB) over ∼75% of the sky from the Atacama Desert, Chile, at frequency bands centered near 40, 90, 150, and 220 GHz. CLASS measures the large angular scale CMB polarization to constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the optical depth to last scattering. This paper presents the optical characterization of the 90 GHz telescope. Observations of the Moon establish the pointing while dedicated observations of Jupiter are used for beam calibration. The standard deviations of the pointing error in azimuth, elevation, and boresight angle are 1.′3, 2.′1, and 2.′0, respectively, over the first 3 yr of observations. This corresponds to a pointing uncertainty ∼7% of the beam’s full width at half-maximum (FWHM). The effective azimuthally symmetrized instrument 1D beam estimated at 90 GHz has an FWHM of 0.°620 ± 0.°003 and a solid angle of 138.7 ± 0.6(stats.) ± 1.1(sys.) μ sr integrated to a radius of 4°. The corresponding beam window function drops to ${b}_{{\ell }}^{2}=0.93,0.71,0.14$ at ℓ = 30, 100, 300, respectively. Far-sidelobes are studied using detector-centered intensity maps of the Moon and measured to be at a level of 10 ^−3 or below relative to the peak. The polarization angle of Tau A estimated from preliminary survey maps is 149°.6 ± 0°.2(stats.) in equatorial coordinates. The instrumental temperature-to-polarization ( T → P ) leakage fraction, inferred from per-detector demodulated Jupiter scan data, has a monopole component at the level of 1.7 × 10 ^−3 , a dipole component with an amplitude of 4.3 × 10 ^−3 , with no evidence of quadrupolar leakage.

Recent James Webb Space Telescope data analyses have shown that massive red galaxies existed at redshifts z ≳ 6, a discovery that is difficult to understand in the context of standard cosmology (ΛCDM). Here, we analyze these observations more deeply, by fitting a stellar population model to the optical and near-infrared photometric data. These fits include a main stellar population in addition to a residual younger population and with the same extinction for both (a lower extinction for the younger population is unphysical). Extra stellar populations or the inclusion of an active galactic nucleus component do not significantly improve the fits. These galaxies are being viewed at very high redshifts, with an average 〈 z 〉 ≈ 8.2, when the ΛCDM Universe was only ≈600 Myr old. This result conflicts with the inferred ages of these galaxies, however, which were on average between 0.9 and 2.4 Gyr old within a 95% confidence level. Given the sequence of star formation and galaxy assembly in the standard model, these galaxies should instead be even younger than 290 Myr on average, for which our analysis assigns a probability of only

We present an analysis of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the Carnegie Supernova Project I and II and extend the Hubble diagram from optical to near-infrared wavelengths ( uBgVriYJH ). We calculate the Hubble constant, H _0 , using various distance calibrators: Cepheids, the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), and surface brightness fluctuations (SBFs). Combining all methods of calibration, we derive H _0 = 71.76 ± 0.58 (stat) ± 1.19 (sys) km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 from the B band and H _0 = 73.22 ± 0.68 (stat) ± 1.28 (sys) km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 from the H band. By assigning equal weight to the Cepheid, TRGB, and SBF calibrators, we derive the systematic errors required for consistency in the first rung of the distance ladder, resulting in a systematic error of 1.2 ∼ 1.3 km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 in H _0 . As a result, relative to the statistics-only uncertainty, the tension between the late-time H _0 we derive by combining the various distance calibrators and the early-time H _0 from the cosmic microwave background is reduced. The highest precision in SN Ia luminosity is found in the Y band (0.12 ± 0.01 mag), as defined by the intrinsic scatter ( σ _int ). We revisit SN Ia Hubble residual-host mass correlations and recover previous results that these correlations do not change significantly between the optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Finally, SNe Ia that explode beyond 10 kpc from their host centers exhibit smaller dispersion in their luminosity, confirming our earlier findings. A reduced effect of dust in the outskirts of hosts may be responsible for this effect.

Understanding the nature of the luminous 1991T-like supernovae (SNe) is of great importance to SN cosmology as they are likely to have been more common in the early Universe. In this paper, we explore the observational properties of 1991T-like SNe to study their relationship to other luminous, slow-declining Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). From the spectroscopic and photometric criteria defined in Phillips et al., we identify 17 1991T-like SNe from the literature. Combining these objects with 10 1991T-like SNe from the Carnegie Supernova Project-II, the spectra, light curves, and colors of these events, along with their host galaxy properties, are examined in detail. We conclude that 1991T-like SNe are closely related in essentially all of their UV, optical, and near-infrared properties—as well as their host galaxy parameters—to the slow-declining subset of Branch core-normal SNe and to the intermediate 1999aa-like events, forming a continuum of luminous SNe Ia. The overriding difference between these three subgroups appears to be the extent to which ^56 Ni mixes into the ejecta, producing the premaximum spectra dominated by Fe iii absorption, the broader UV light curves, and the higher luminosities that characterize the 1991T-like events. Nevertheless, the association of 1991T-like SNe with the rare Type Ia circumstellar material SNe would seem to run counter to this hypothesis, in which case 1991T-like events may form a separate subclass of SNe Ia, possibly arising from single-degenerate progenitor systems.

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) completed its 5 month Survey Validation in 2021 May. Spectra of stellar and extragalactic targets from Survey Validation constitute the first major data sample from the DESI survey. This paper describes the public release of those spectra, the catalogs of derived properties, and the intermediate data products. In total, the public release includes good-quality spectral information from 466,447 objects targeted as part of the Milky Way Survey, 428,758 as part of the Bright Galaxy Survey, 227,318 as part of the Luminous Red Galaxy sample, 437,664 as part of the Emission Line Galaxy sample, and 76,079 as part of the Quasar sample. In addition, the release includes spectral information from 137,148 objects that expand the scope beyond the primary samples as part of a series of secondary programs. Here, we describe the spectral data, data quality, data products, Large-Scale Structure science catalogs, access to the data, and references that provide relevant background to using these spectra.

We revisit the claimed detection of a new cosmic microwave background (CMB) foreground based on the correlation between low-redshift Two Micron All Sky Survey Redshift Survey (2MRS) galaxies and CMB temperature maps from the Planck and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe missions. We reproduce the reported measurements but argue that the original analysis significantly underestimated the uncertainties. We cross-correlate the 2MRS galaxy positions with simulated CMB maps and show that the correlation measured with the real data for late-type spiral galaxies at angular scales θ ≥ 0.°1 and redshift cz < 4500 km s ^−1 is consistent with zero at the 1.7 σ level or less, depending on the exact CMB map and simulation construction. This was the sample that formed the basis for the original detection claim. For smaller angular separations the results are not robust to galaxy type or CMB cleaning method, and we are unable to draw firm conclusions. The original analysis did not propose a specific, falsifiable physical correlation mechanism, and it is impossible to rule out any contribution from an underlying physical effect. However, given our calculations, the lack of signal from expanding the redshift range, and the lack of corroboration from other galaxy surveys, we do not find the evidence for a new CMB foreground signal compelling.

Line intensity mapping (LIM) serves as a potent probe in astrophysics, relying on the statistical analysis of integrated spectral line emissions originating from distant star-forming galaxies. While LIM observations hold the promise of achieving a broad spectrum of scientific objectives, a significant hurdle for future experiments lies in distinguishing the targeted spectral line emitted at a specific redshift from undesired line emissions originating at different redshifts. The presence of these interloping lines poses a challenge to the accuracy of cosmological analyses. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to quantify line–line cross-correlations (LIM-LLX), enabling us to investigate the target signal amid instrumental noise and interloping emissions. For example, at a redshift of z ∼ 3.7, we observed that the measured auto-power spectrum of C ii 158 exhibited substantial bias, from interloping line emission. However, cross-correlating C ii 158 with CO(6–5) lines using an FYST-like experiment yielded a promising result, with a signal-to-noise ratio of ∼10. This measurement is notably unbiased. Additionally, we explore the extensive capabilities of cross-correlation by leveraging various CO transitions to probe the tomographic Universe at lower redshifts through LIM-LLX. We further demonstrate that incorporating low-frequency channels, such as 90 and 150 GHz, into FYST’s EoR-Spec-like experiment can maximize the potential for cross-correlation studies, effectively reducing the bias introduced by instrumental noise and interlopers.

Galaxy cluster mergers are rich sources of information to test cluster astrophysics and cosmology. However, cluster mergers produce complex projected signals that are difficult to interpret physically from individual observational probes. Multi-probe constraints on the gas and dark matter (DM) cluster components are necessary to infer merger parameters that are otherwise degenerate. We present Improved Constraints on Mergers with SZ, Hydrodynamical simulations, Optical, and X-ray (ICM-SHOX), a systematic framework to jointly infer multiple merger parameters quantitatively via a pipeline that directly compares a novel combination of multi-probe observables to mock observables derived from hydrodynamical simulations. We report a first application of the ICM-SHOX pipeline to MACS J0018.5+1626, wherein we systematically examine simulated snapshots characterized by a wide range of initial parameters to constrain the MACS J0018.5+1626 merger geometry. We constrain the epoch of MACS J0018.5+1626 to the range 0–60 Myr post-pericenter passage, and the viewing angle is inclined ≈27°–40° from the merger axis. We obtain constraints for the impact parameter (≲250 kpc), mass ratio (≈1.5–3.0), and initial relative velocity when the clusters are separated by 3 Mpc (≈1700–3000 km s ^−1 ). The primary and secondary clusters initially (at 3 Mpc) have gas distributions that are moderately and strongly disturbed, respectively. We discover a velocity space decoupling of the DM and gas distributions in MACS J0018.5+1626, traced by cluster-member galaxy velocities and the kinematic Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect, respectively. Our simulations indicate this decoupling is dependent on the different collisional properties of the two distributions for particular merger epochs, geometries, and viewing angles.

Space-based missions studying the cosmic microwave background (CMB) have progressively refined the parameter space in conventional models of inflation shortly (∼10 ^−37 s) after the Big Bang. While most inflationary scenarios proposed thus far in the context of general relativity have since been ruled out, the basic idea of inflation may still be tenable, albeit with several unresolved conundrums, such as conflicting initial conditions and inconsistencies with the measured CMB power spectrum. In the new slow-roll inflationary picture, inflation arising in plateau-like potentials requires an initiation beyond the Planck time. This delay may be consistent with the cutoff, ${k}_{\min }$ , measured recently in the primordial power spectrum. However, the actual value of ${k}_{\min }$ would imply an initiation time too far beyond the Big Bang for inflation to solve the horizon problem. In this paper, we also describe several other undesirable consequences of this delay, including an absence of well-motivated initial conditions and a significant difficulty in providing a viable mechanism for properly quantizing the primordial fluctuations. Nevertheless, many of these inconsistencies may still be avoided if one introduces nonconventional modifications to inflation, such as a brief departure from slow-roll dynamics, possibly due to a dramatic change in the inflationary potential, inflation driven by multiple fields, or a nonminimal coupling to gravity. In addition, some of these difficulties could be mitigated via the use of alternative cosmologies based, e.g., on loop quantum gravity, which replaces the initial Big Bang singularity with finite conditions at a bounce-like beginning.

The bulk flow in the Local Universe is a collective phenomenon due to the peculiar motions of matter structures, which, instead of moving in random directions, appears to follow an approximate dipole velocity flow. We apply a directional analysis to investigate, through the Hubble-Lemaître diagram, the angular dependence of the Hubble constant H _0 of a sample of Type Ia supernovae from the Pantheon+ catalog in the Local Universe (0.015 ≤ z ≤ 0.06). We perform a directional analysis that reveals a statistically significant dipole variation of H _0 , at more than 99.9% confidence level, showing that matter structures follow a dipole bulk flow motion toward ( l , b ) = (326.°1 ± 11.°2, 27.°8 ± 11.°2), close to the Shapley supercluster ( l _Shapley , b _Shapley ) = (311.°5, 32.°3), with velocity 132.14 ± 109.3 km s ^−1 at the effective distance 102.83 ± 10.2 Mpc. Interestingly, the antipodal direction of this dipole points close to the Dipole Repeller structure. Our analyses confirm that the gravitational dipole system Shapley-Dipole Repeller explains well the observed bulk flow velocity field in the Local Universe. Furthermore, we performed robustness tests that support our results. Additionally, our approach provides a measurement of the Hubble constant H _0 = 70.39 ± 1.4 km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 , at the effective distance 102.8 Mpc, z ≃ 0.025.

In this paper, we have performed a comparative study of different types of oscillating dark energy (DE) models using the Metropolis algorithm of Markov Chain Monte Carlo. Eight different oscillating parameterizations are examined herein that have demonstrated considerable ability to fit the overall cosmological observations, including the Pantheon sample of Type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, cosmic chronometer Hubble data, and distance priors of the Planck cosmic microwave background. In order to compare the consistency of these models with observations, we have used both the Akaike and deviance information criteria. Although the values of the Akaike information criterion for different models indicate that there is no support for oscillating DE models, the deviance information criterion showed that there is significant support for some of these models. Our results showed that these models are capable of solving the cosmic coincidence problem and alleviating the Hubble tension. Comparing the H _0 values obtained for different oscillating scenarios with that of ΛCDM, we observed that our oscillating models led to $\bar{{H}_{0}}=69.78$ , which is 0.29 greater than H _0,Λ and thus reduces the Hubble tension. Among all of the models, model 1, with H _0 = 70.00 ± 0.71, is the most capable of alleviating the H _0 tension. Furthermore, we examined our models assuming H _0 = 73.0 ± 1.4 from SHoES measurements. We find that adding this data point to our data combination led to a ${\rm{\Delta }}\bar{{H}_{0}}=0.95$ increase in the H _0 value for different models.

We present tomographic measurements of structure growth using cross-correlations of Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) DR6 and Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing maps with the unWISE Blue and Green galaxy samples, which span the redshift ranges 0.2 ≲ z ≲ 1.1 and 0.3 ≲ z ≲ 1.8, respectively. We improve on prior unWISE cross-correlations not just by making use of the new, high-precision ACT DR6 lensing maps, but also by including additional spectroscopic data for redshift calibration and by analyzing our measurements with a more flexible theoretical model. We determine the amplitude of matter fluctuations at low redshifts ( z ≃ 0.2–1.6), finding ${S}_{8}\equiv {\sigma }_{8}{({{\rm{\Omega }}}_{m}/0.3)}^{0.5}=0.813\pm 0.021$ using the ACT cross-correlation alone and S _8 = 0.810 ± 0.015 with a combination of Planck and ACT cross-correlations; these measurements are fully consistent with the predictions from primary CMB measurements assuming standard structure growth. The addition of baryon acoustic oscillation data breaks the degeneracy between σ _8 and Ω _m , allowing us to measure σ _8 = 0.813 ± 0.020 from the cross-correlation of unWISE with ACT and σ _8 = 0.813 ± 0.015 from the combination of cross-correlations with ACT and Planck. These results also agree with the expectations from primary CMB extrapolations in ΛCDM cosmology; the consistency of σ _8 derived from our two redshift samples at z ∼ 0.6 and 1.1 provides a further check of our cosmological model. Our results suggest that structure formation on linear scales is well described by ΛCDM even down to low redshifts z ≲ 1.

We study stars in the J-regions of the asymptotic giant branch (JAGB) of near-infrared color–magnitude diagrams in the maser host NGC 4258 and four hosts of six Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia): NGC 1448, NGC 1559, NGC 5584, and NGC 5643. These clumps of stars are readily apparent near 1.0 < F150W − F277W < 1.5 and m _F150W = 22–25 mag with James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam photometry. Various methods have been proposed to assign an apparent reference magnitude to this recently proposed standard candle, including the mode, median, sigma-clipped mean, or a modeled luminosity function parameter. We test the consistency of these by measuring intrahost variations, finding differences of up to ∼0.2 mag that significantly exceed statistical uncertainties. Brightness differences appear intrinsic, and are further amplified by the nonuniform shape of the JAGB luminosity function, also apparent in the LMC and SMC. We follow a “many methods” approach to measure consistently JAGB magnitudes and distance moduli to the SN Ia host sample calibrated by NGC 4258. We find broad agreement with distance moduli measured from Cepheids, tip of the red giant branch, and Miras. However, the SN host mean distance modulus estimated via the JAGB method necessary to estimate H _0 differs by ∼0.19 mag among the above definitions, the result of different levels of luminosity function asymmetry. The methods yield a full range of 71−78 km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 , i.e., a fiducial result of H _0 = 74.7 ± 2.1(stat) ± 2.3(sys, ±3.1 if combined in quadrature) km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 , with systematic errors limited by the differences in methods. Future work may seek to standardize and refine this promising tool further, making it more competitive with established distance indicators.

We offer a cosmological model based on conventional general relativity (no speculative physics) that may resolve the Hubble tension. A reanalysis of the foundation of the Lambda-CDM model shows that general relativity alone does not specify what fraction of the mass density acts as the source term in Friedmann’s equation and what fraction acts as the source of the gravitational potential of condensed objects. This observation opens the way to alternative cosmological models within conventional general relativity, and it proves that the ΛCDM model is not the unique solution of Einstein’s equations for the usual cosmological sources of gravitation. We emphasize that the source of the gravitation potential in the ΛCDM model is the deviation δ ρ _m of the mass density away from its average value, and not the total density of condensed masses as in Newtonian theory. Though not often stated, this is a modification of Newtonian gravitation within the ΛCDM model. The ΛCDM-NG model uses the freedom to move matter between source terms to restore the source of gravitational potential to its Newtonian form. There is no Hubble tension in the ΛCDM-NG model if the gravitational potential of condensed objects (stars, galaxies, and dark matter clouds) falls in a certain range, a range that does not seem unreasonable for the actual Universe. The deceleration parameter in the ΛCDM-NG model differs from that in the ΛCDM model, suggesting a test to distinguish between the two models.

Several ongoing and upcoming large-scale structure surveys aim to explore the nonlinear regime of structure formation with high precision. Making reliable cosmological inferences from these observations necessitates precise theoretical modeling of the mildly nonlinear regime. In this work we explore how the choice of nonlinear prescription would impact parameter estimation from cosmic shear measurements for a Euclid-like survey. Specifically, we employ two different nonlinear prescriptions of halofit and the Effective Field Theory of the Large Scale Structure and compare their measurements for the three different cosmological scenarios of ΛCDM, w CDM, and ( w _0 , w _a ) CDM. We also investigate the impact of different nonlinear cutoff schemes on parameter estimation. We find that the predicted errors on most parameters shrink considerably as smaller scales are included in the analysis, with the amount depending on the nonlinear prescription and the cutoff scheme used. We use predictions from the halofit model to analyze the mock data from DarkSky N -body simulations and quantify the parameter bias introduced in the measurements due to the choice of nonlinear prescription. We observe that σ _8 and n _s have the largest measurement bias induced by inaccuracies of the halofit model.

With the growing number of gravitational wave (GW) detections and the advent of large galaxy redshift surveys, a new era in cosmology is emerging. This study explores the synergies between GWs and galaxy surveys to jointly constrain cosmological and GW population parameters. We introduce CHIMERA , a novel code for GW cosmology combining information from the population properties of compact binary mergers and galaxy catalogs. We study constraints for scenarios representative of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA O4 and O5 observing runs, assuming to have a complete catalog of potential host galaxies with either spectroscopic or photometric redshift measurements. We find that a percent-level measurement of H _0 could be achieved with the best 100 binary black holes (BBHs) in O5 using a spectroscopic galaxy catalog. In this case, the intrinsic correlation that exists between H _0 and the BBH population mass scales is broken. Instead, by using a photometric catalog the accuracy is degraded up to a factor of ∼9, leaving a significant correlation between H _0 and the mass scales that must be carefully modeled to avoid bias. Interestingly, we find that using spectroscopic redshift measurements in the O4 configuration yields a better constraint on H _0 compared to the O5 configuration with photometric measurements. In view of the wealth of GW data that will be available in the future, we argue the importance of obtaining spectroscopic galaxy catalogs to maximize the scientific return of GW cosmology.

Measurement of the largest angular scale ( ℓ < 30) features of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization is a powerful way to constrain the optical depth to reionization and search for the signature of inflation through the detection of primordial B -modes. We present an analysis of maps covering 73.6% of the sky made from the 40 GHz channel of the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) from 2016 August to 2022 May. Taking advantage of the measurement stability enabled by front-end polarization modulation and excellent conditions from the Atacama Desert, we show this channel achieves higher sensitivity than the analogous frequencies from satellite measurements in the range 10 < ℓ < 100. Simulations show the CLASS linear (circular) polarization maps have a white noise level of $125(130)\,\mu {\rm{K}}\,\mathrm{arcmin}$ . We measure the Galaxy-masked EE and BB spectra of diffuse synchrotron radiation and compare to space-based measurements at similar frequencies. In combination with external data, we expand measurements of the spatial variations of the synchrotron spectral energy density (SED) to include new sky regions and measure the diffuse SED in the harmonic domain. We place a new upper limit on a background of circular polarization in the range 5 < ℓ < 125 with the first bin showing D _ℓ < 0.023 $\mu {{\rm{K}}}_{\mathrm{CMB}}^{2}$ at 95% confidence. These results establish a new standard for recovery of the largest-scale CMB polarization from the ground and signal exciting possibilities when the higher sensitivity and higher-frequency CLASS channels are included in the analysis.

The giant spiral galaxy M101 is host to the nearest recent Type Ia supernova (SN 2011fe) and thus has been extensively monitored in the near-infrared to study the late-time light curve of the SN. Leveraging this existing baseline of observations, we derive the first Mira-based distance to M101 by discovering and classifying a sample of 211 Miras with periods ranging from 240–400 days in the SN field. Combined with new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR channel observations, our data set totals 11 epochs of F110W (HST YJ ) and 13 epochs of F160W (HST H ) data spanning ∼2900 days. We adopt absolute calibrations of the Mira period–luminosity relation based on geometric distances to the Large Magellanic Cloud and the water megamaser host galaxy NGC 4258, and find μ _M101 = 29.10 ± 0.06 mag. This distance is in 1 σ agreement with most other recent Cepheid and tip of the red giant branch distance measurements to M101. Including the previous Mira SN Ia host, NGC 1559, and SN 2005df, we determine the fiducial SN Ia peak luminosity, ${M}_{B}^{0}=-19.27\,\pm \,0.09$ mag. With the Hubble diagram of supernovae Ia, we derive H _0 = 72.37 ± 2.97 km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 , a 4.1% measurement of H _0 using Miras. We find excellent agreement with recent Cepheid distance ladder measurements of H _0 and confirm previous indications that the local universe value of H _0 is higher than the early universe value at ∼95% confidence. Currently, the Mira-based H _0 measurement is still dominated by the statistical uncertainty in the SN Ia peak magnitude.

We present cosmological constraints from a gravitational lensing mass map covering 9400 deg ^2 reconstructed from measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) made by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) from 2017 to 2021. In combination with measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations and big bang nucleosynthesis, we obtain the clustering amplitude σ _8 = 0.819 ± 0.015 at 1.8% precision, ${S}_{8}\equiv {\sigma }_{8}{({{\rm{\Omega }}}_{{\rm{m}}}/0.3)}^{0.5}=0.840\pm 0.028$ , and the Hubble constant H _0 = (68.3 ± 1.1) km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 at 1.6% precision. A joint constraint with Planck CMB lensing yields σ _8 = 0.812 ± 0.013, ${S}_{8}\equiv {\sigma }_{8}{({{\rm{\Omega }}}_{{\rm{m}}}/0.3)}^{0.5}=0.831\pm 0.023$ , and H _0 = (68.1 ± 1.0) km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 . These measurements agree with ΛCDM extrapolations from the CMB anisotropies measured by Planck. We revisit constraints from the KiDS, DES, and HSC galaxy surveys with a uniform set of assumptions and find that S _8 from all three are lower than that from ACT+Planck lensing by levels ranging from 1.7 σ to 2.1 σ . This motivates further measurements and comparison, not just between the CMB anisotropies and galaxy lensing but also between CMB lensing probing z ∼ 0.5–5 on mostly linear scales and galaxy lensing at z ∼ 0.5 on smaller scales. We combine with CMB anisotropies to constrain extensions of ΛCDM, limiting neutrino masses to ∑ m _ν < 0.13 eV (95% c.l.), for example. We describe the mass map and related data products that will enable a wide array of cross-correlation science. Our results provide independent confirmation that the universe is spatially flat, conforms with general relativity, and is described remarkably well by the ΛCDM model, while paving a promising path for neutrino physics with lensing from upcoming ground-based CMB surveys.
