Background: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (cardiac MR) reference ranges in Chinese children are lacking. Purpose: To establish age‐ and sex‐specific reference ranges for cardiac MR parameters in a cohort of healthy Chinese children. Study Type: Retrospective. Subjects: One hundred ninety‐six healthy children (mean age 9.5 ± 3.6 years, 111 boys). Field Strength/Sequence: 1.5 T; balanced steady‐state free precession. Assessment: Biventricular volume and ejection fractions (EF), left atrial (LA) volume, right atrial (RA) area, left ventricular (LV) mass and thickness, aortic root (AR), and main pulmonary artery (MPA) dimensions were measured. Parameters were compared between age groups and sex. The relationships between parameters and age, body mass index (BMI) and body surface area (BSA) were investigated. Statistical Tests: Independent‐samples t tests; Pearson's correlation. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Generally, boys exhibited greater absolute measurements of LV volume (end‐diastolic: 94.4 ± 29.5 vs. 81.3 ± 31.0 mL), LA volume (end‐diastolic: 42.6 ± 13.4 vs. 38.0 ± 13.3 mL), RA area (end‐diastolic: 11.6 ± 2.5 vs. 10.8 ± 2.6 cm2), LV thickness (base: 4.4 ± 1.1 vs. 3.8 ± 0.9 mm), AR dimensions (annuls: 16.3 ± 2.7 vs. 15.0 ± 2.8 mm), and MPA dimensions (14.3 ± 2.3 vs. 13.1 ± 2.4 mm) than girls did. However, these differences were not observed when the measurements were normalized to BSA (LV volume: 75.3 ± 11.7 vs. 71.9 ± 12.3 mL/m2, P = 0.052; LA volume: 34.8 ± 8.9 vs. 34.5 ± 7.6 mL/m2, P = 0.783; RA area: 9.7 ± 2.3 vs. 10.2 ± 2.3 cm2/m2, P = 0.107; LV thickness: 3.6 ± 0.7 vs. 3.6 ± 0.9 mm/m2, P = 0.990; AR: 13.6 ± 2.7 vs. 14.3 ± 3.4 mm/m2, P = 0.108; MPA: 11.9 ± 2.3 vs. 12.4 ± 2.4 mm/m2, P = 0.118). Boys had greater RV volume (end‐diastolic: 98.7 ± 33.5 vs. 82.7 ± 33.1 mL) and LV mass (52.6 ± 20.2 vs. 41.4 ± 16.0 g) compared to girls, irrespective of whether the values were indexed or not for BSA. Additionally, there were significant associations between age, BMI, and BSA with biventricular volume, LA volume, RA area, LV mass and thickness, AR and MPA dimensions in both boys and girls. ABSTRACT Introduction/Aims Methods Results Discussion We aimed to determine differences in diaphragm thickness by including/excluding pleural and peritoneal membranes, the variability in diaphragm thickness over the apposition zone, and the predictors of diaphragm thickness and excursion measurements.At least 10 male and female subjects were recruited for each decade of life. Spirometry, respiratory muscle strength, and the diaphragm ultrasound (US) measurements were performed. Multivariate linear regression was applied to determine associations between diaphragm US parameters, subject characteristics, spirometry, and respiratory muscle strength.In 156 subjects (mean 47.8 ± 17.7; 20–80 years of age), a significant difference in diaphragm thickness was found when comparing measurements that included and excluded the pleural and peritoneal membranes (mean 2.3 vs. 1.7 mm; average difference of 35% (95% CI [15.3–60]); p < 0.001), as well as the minimum and maximum diaphragm thicknesses at different locations over the apposition zone (mean 1.4 vs. 2.1 mm; p < 0.001). Adjusting for sex, age, height, sniff nasal inspiratory pressure, and forced vital capacity, a positive association was found between body mass index (BMI) and diaphragm thickness (β =0.024, p < 0.001, partial R2 = 0.31, 95% CI [0.018, 0.030]); a negative association was found with the thickening ratio (β = −0.013, p = 0.050, partial R2 = 0.04, 95% CI [−0.024, −0.002]).Caliper placement and the location of measurement over the apposition zone greatly affect diaphragm thickness, which is also associated with BMI. The Repetitive Saliva Swallow Test (RSST) is a screening test for oropharyngeal dysphagia during which the subject is asked to perform as many empty swallows as possible in 30 s. Previous validation studies found a cutoff value of 3 > swallows as pathological. The aims of this study were to establish the normative values of the RSST and to examine the effect of clinical factors on RSST scores in healthy adults. A cross-sectional study of 280 adults. An equal number of females and males were recruited for each decade of life, ages 20 to 90 years. Patients reporting swallowing difficulties, history of neurologic disorders, or head and neck surgery or radiation were excluded. Data collected included RSST scores, number and type of comorbidities, number of prescribed medications, body mass index, smoking habits, and self-assessment xerostomia questionnaire. The mean RSST score for the entire cohort was 7.01 ± 2.86. Males had a higher RSST score (7.6 ± 3.04 compared to 6.47 ± 2.56, p = 0.001). Age showed an inverse correlation with RSST scores (Pearson's Correlation Coefficient (PCC) = -0.463, p < 0.0001), as well as body mass index, BMI (PCC = -0.2, p < 0.0001), number of co-morbidities (PCC=-0.344, p < 0.0001) and number of prescribed medications (PCC= -0.425, p < 0.0001). Self-reported amount of saliva positively correlated (PCC = 1.05, p = 0.04) with RSST scores. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. Age, sex, BMI, and number of prescribed medications were found as significant independent factors on RSST scores. RSST scores in healthy adults decline with age and are lower in females, individuals taking multiple medications and with higher BMI. Objective: Serum prolactin measurements are important in the differential diagnosis of pituitary masses and subfertility. We observed discrepancies in serum prolactin levels in several patients measured with different immunoassays. Despite differences in assay results, the reference intervals (RIs) derived by the manufacturers were similar. In this study, we aimed to investigate prolactin assay differences and to re-establish RIs for different prolactin immunoassays. Methods: For the assay comparison, serum samples were collected from men and women visiting the Amsterdam UMC hospital. Prolactin levels were measured using the AtellicaTM IM analyzer (Siemens Healthineers) and the Cobas (Roche Diagnostics) immunoassay. RIs for prolactin were re-established for men, premenopausal women, and postmenopausal women for both the Atellica and Cobas immunoassay. Results: Prolactin levels measured using the Cobas immunoassay were 1.75 times higher than those measured using the Atellica immunoassay. Purpose: Right atrial volume (RAV) and function have proven prognostic value in the assessment of cardiac disease and may be more accurately assessed using three‐dimensional echocardiography (3DE). Normal 3DE reference values for the right atrial (RA) volume and function in healthy children have not yet been published. Furthermore, current methods of indexing cardiac measurements to body surface area (BSA) alone may be insufficient. We aimed to develop reference values for 3DE‐derived RAV and function in the pediatric population, to provide a comparison of regression methods using BSA, height, weight, and sex, and to compare 3DE values to two‐dimensional echocardiography (2DE) derived volumes. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 187 3DE datasets acquired for a multi‐center study on healthy children at two international centers. 3DE volumes were measured with vendor‐agnostic software (Tomtec), and 2DE endo‐diastolic volume (EDV) using the area‐length single‐plane approach. Regression curve‐fitting of height (Ht), weight (Wt), BSA, and sex were explored to optimize Pearson coefficient and homoscedasticity. Results: The relationship of 3DE RAVs to BSA alone was heteroscedastic, with a residual positive relationship on indexing (R2 = 0.2506). Optimal regression of Ln (Volume) = b0 + x*Ln (Ht) + y*Ln (Wt) + z*Sex was homoscedastic. Total RA emptying fraction (EF) did not vary across age or sex, however active and passive emptying was best fit by a spline curve with a knot at approximately BSA = 1 m2. Strong agreement with 2DE‐derived EDV was present (r2 = 0.83). Background: The clinical value of myocardial torsion quantification in prognostic assessment and risk stratification of various cardiovascular diseases is gradually being recognized. However, normal values of left and right ventricular (LV and RV) torsion and torsion rates (TRs) have not been fully determined, and their correlation with age and gender has not been well studied. Purpose: To establish normal ranges of biventricular torsion, peak systolic and diastolic TRs using magnetic resonance feature tracking (MR‐FT) technique based on a large sample of healthy adults, and further investigate their relationship with age and gender. Study Type: Retrospective. Population: 566 Healthy adults (312 males, aged 43 ± 10 years; 254 females, aged 43 ± 11 years). Field Strength/Sequence: 1.5T/gradient echo. Assessment: Biventricular torsion, peak systolic, and diastolic TRs. Statistical Tests: Shapiro–Wilk test, Student's t‐test, Mann–Whitney‐U test, linear regression, intraclass correlation coefficient, Bland–Altman analysis. Differences were regarded as statistically significant at P < 0.05. Results: Women demonstrated greater magnitudes of left ventricle (LV) torsion (1.23 ± 0.44 vs. 1.00 ± 0.42°/cm), peak systolic TR (9.69 ± 3.70 vs. 8.27 ± 3.73°/cm*sec), peak diastolic TR (−7.78 ± 2.82 vs. −6.06 ± 2.44°/cm*sec), and RV torsion (2.20 ± 1.23 vs. 1.65 ± 1.11°/cm*sec), peak systolic TR (16.07 ± 8.18 vs. 12.62 ± 7.08°/cm*sec), peak diastolic TR (−15.39 ± 6.53 vs. −11.70 ± 6.03°/cm*sec). For both genders, the magnitudes of LV and RV torsion, peak systolic, and diastolic TRs increased linearly with age. All the measurements of biventricular torsion, peak systolic and diastolic TRs achieved good to excellent intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility, with all intraclass correlation coefficients >0.70. Data Conclusion: The present study systematically provided age‐ and sex‐stratified reference values for LV and RV torsion and TRs using MR‐FT technique. Background: To facilitate the clinical use of cardiac T1ρ, it is important to understand the impact of age and sex on T1ρ values of the myocardium. Purpose: To investigate the impact of age and gender on myocardial T1ρ values. Study Type: Cross‐sectional. Population: Two hundred ten healthy Han Chinese volunteers without cardiovascular risk factors (85 males, mean age 34.4 ± 12.5 years; 125 females, mean age 37.9 ± 14.8 years). Field Strength/Sequence: 1.5 T; T1ρ‐prepared steady‐state free precession (T1ρ mapping) sequence. Assessment: Basal, mid, and apical short‐axis left ventricular T1ρ maps were acquired. T1ρ maps acquired with spin‐lock frequencies of 5 and 400 Hz were subtracted to create a myocardial fibrosis index (mFI) map. T1ρ and mFI values across different age decades, sex, and slice locations were compared. Statistical Tests: Shapiro–Wilk test, Student's t test, Mann–Whitney U test, linear regression analysis, one‐way analysis of variance and intraclass correlation coefficient. Significance: P value <0.05. Results: Women had significantly higher T1ρ and mFI values than men (50.3 ± 2.0 msec vs. 47.7 ± 2.4 msec and 4.7 ± 1.0 msec vs. 4.3 ± 1.1 msec, respectively). Additionally, in males and females combined, there was a significant positive but weak correlation between T1ρ values and age (r = 0.27), while no correlation was observed between the mFI values and age (P = 0.969). Data Conclusion: We report potential reference values for cardiac T1ρ by sex, age distribution, and slice location in a Chinese population. Background: Ovarian enlargement is one of several findings of pathology, including ovarian torsion. With increasing use of MRI for acute abdominal pain in children, data for normal ovary size and appearance are needed. Objective: To provide preliminary data on normal sizes of ovaries on MRI in pediatric patients. Materials and methods: This retrospective IRB-approved study included girls (5 to 17 years of age) with MRI examinations performed for indications not related to the ovaries from 2018 to 2022. For each MRI, coronal T2-weighted single shot fast spin echo and axial T2-weighted fat-saturated images were independently reviewed by three pediatric radiologists who recorded ovary visualization and ovarian linear measurements (3 planes). Ovarian volumes were calculated from linear measurements. Agreement among observers was calculated using kappa statistics and intraclass correlation coefficients. Results: A total of 181 MRIs were reviewed. The left ovary was visualized in 166–176 (92–97%) cases (R1–R3) and the right ovary was visualized in 165–174 (91–96%) cases with excellent agreement among reviewers (left: K = 0.89 [0.84–0.94], right: K = 0.85 [0.79–0.91]). Interrater class coefficient (ICC) for largest single dimension of the ovary was left: 0.83 (CI 0.79–0.87) and right: 0.85 (CI 0.81–0.89). There were significant moderate to strong correlations between ovarian volume and age (left: 0.67 [0.58–0.75], right: 0.66 [0.57–0.74]). Conclusion: The ovaries can be adequately visualized and measured on MRI with excellent inter-reader agreement. Our objective in this work was to estimate normal values of biochemical parameters in laboratory animals in Iraq. Values were pooled from studies conducted in Iraqi universities using a meta-analysis approach. Pertinent peer-reviewed published studies were retrieved from the Iraqi Academic Scientific Journals (IASJ) database. Random-effects inverse-variance model was used to obtain pooled means of the parameters from the set of studies qualified for the analysis. Among a total of 460 records identified from IASJ, 264 records were eligible for the statistical analysis, which reported 102 values for different biochemical parameters. The mean of the sample size for normal animals that was used in the studies including in the analysis were 8, 8, and 6 for rats, mice, and rabbits respectively. The mean ± standard deviation of ages (months) was 2.8 ± 1.0, 3.14 ± 1.15, and 9.2 ± 3.3 for rats, mice, and rabbits respectively. In this analysis, we estimated 31, 14, and 15 parameters from 121, 41, and 26 studies of rats, mice, and rabbits correspondingly. The proportion of variance in the parameters for the analyzed studies due to heterogeneity was significant. Evidence of bias in the estimated values due to small studies was found in some parameters. In conclusion, we encourage researchers to consider the values we provided in this analysis and report details of the sample size, number of animals in each group, sex, exact age, and the accurate units for the estimated values in their studies to facilitate further analyses for more reference values in further analyses‎‎‎.

Objectives: We aimed to provide data of nerve sizes and echogenicity reference values of the Lithuanian population. Methods: High-resolution ultrasound was bilaterally performed according to the Ultrasound Pattern Sum Score and Neuropathy ultrasound protocols for healthy Lithuanian adults. Cross-sectional area (CSA) measurement and echogenicity were used as the main parameters for investigation. Echogenicity was evaluated using ImageJ, and nerves were categorized in classes according to echogenicity. Results: Of 125 subjects enrolled, 63 were males (mean age 47.57 years, range 25–78 years) and 62 were females (mean age 50.50 years, range 25–80 years). Reference values of nerve sizes and values of echogenicity as a fraction of black in percentage of cervical roots, upper and middle trunks of the brachial plexus and the following nerves: vagal, median, ulnar, radial, superficial radial, tibial, fibular, and sural in standard regions were established. Mild to moderate correlations were found between nerves CSA, echogenicity values and anthropometric measurements with the differences according to sex. Inter-rater (ICC 0.93; 95% CI 0.92–0.94) and intra-rater (ICC 0.94; 95% CI 0.93–0.95) reliability was excellent. Aims Dynamic myocardial computed tomography (CT) perfusion (DM-CTP) can, in combination with coronary CT angiography (CCTA), provide anatomical and functional evaluation of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, normal values of myocardial blood flow (MBF) are needed to identify impaired myocardial blood supply in patients with suspected CAD. We aimed to establish normal values for MBF measured using DM-CTP, to assess the effects of age and sex, and to assess regional distribution of MBF. Methods and results A total of 82 healthy individuals (46 women) aged 45–78 years with normal coronary arteries by CCTA underwent either rest and adenosine stress DM-CTP (n = 30) or adenosine-induced stress DM-CTP only (n = 52). Global and segmental MBF were assessed. Global MBF at rest and during stress were 0.93 ± 0.42 and 3.58 ± 1.14 mL/min/g, respectively. MBF was not different between the sexes (P = 0.88 at rest and P = 0.61 during stress), and no correlation was observed between MBF and age (P = 0.08 at rest and P = 0.82 during stress). Among the 16 myocardial segments, significant intersegmental differences were found (P < 0.01), which was not related to age, sex, or coronary dominance. Conclusion MBF assessed by DM-CTP in healthy individuals with normal coronary arteries displays significant intersegmental heterogeneity which does not seem to be affected by age, sex, or coronary dominance. Background: Although coronary artery nomograms in children have been published, data on Caucasian children are lacking. The aim of this study is to provide: (i) a full dataset of coronary artery diameters in healthy children and (ii) a comparison among major previous nomograms. Materials and Methods: We prospectively evaluated 606 healthy subjects (age range, 1 days–<18 years; median age 8.7 years; 62.5% male). Coronary artery measurements in a short-axis view were performed. Age, heart rate, and body surface area (BSA) were used as independent variables in different analyses to predict the mean values of each measurement. To assess the accuracy of the predictive models of different studies, a Z-score calculator was created using Lopez's nomograms for comparison. Results: The association with BSA was found to be stronger, and was used for normalization of our data. The best-fit models, satisfying the assumption of homoscedasticity and normality of residuals and showing the highest R2 scores, were logarithmic (ln[y] = a + b*ln[x]). Predicted values and Z-score boundaries by BSA are provided. Our ranges of normality are slightly lower than those, diverging from −0.22 to −0.59 Z-scores for the left main coronary artery and from −0.23 to −0.3 Z-scores for the right coronary artery. Conclusions: We report a complete dataset of normal echocardiography coronary artery diameter (including new measures of the proximal origin) values in a large population of healthy children. Background: Echocardiographic myocardial work is a new load-independent echocardiographic technique to quantify left ventricle (LV) systolic performance. Our aim was to establish normal values for echocardiographic myocardial work in a large population of healthy children. Methods: For all the subjects 4-, 2-, and 3-chamber-view videos were stored. The following parameters were obtained by offline analysis: the global myocardial work (GMW), the global myocardial constructive work (GCW), the global myocardial wasted work (GWW), and the global myocardial work efficiency (GWE). Age, weight, height, heart rate, and body surface area (BSA) were used as independent variables in the statistical analysis. Results: In all, 516 healthy subjects (age range, 1 day—18 years; median age, 8.2 ± 5.3 years; 55.8% male; body surface area (BSA) range, 0.16 to 2.12 m2) were included. GWI, GCW, and GWW increased with weight, height, and BSA (ρ ranging from 0.635 to 0.226, p all < 0.01); GWI and GCW positively correlated with age (ρ 0.653 and 0.507). After adjusting for BSA differences, females showed higher mean GWI (p = 0.002) and GCW values (p < 0.001), thus Z-score equations for gender have been presented. Conclusions: We provided MW values in a large population of healthy pediatric subjects including lower ages. MW values increased with age and body size and, interestingly, were higher in females than in men. These data cover a gap in current nomograms and may serve as a baseline for the evaluation of MW analysis in children with congenital and acquired heart diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Preterm infants are at risk for a variety of somatic and neurological disorders. In recent years, biofluid proteomics has emerged as a potential diagnostic tool for biomarker analysis. The aim of this study was to determine gestational age (GA)-related patterns of the urinary peptidome in preterm infants for researching potential novel prognostic biomarkers. Methods: We performed urinary peptidomics in longitudinal samples of 24 preterm (mean GA weeks 28 + 1 [24+1–31 + 6]) and 27 term born controls (mean GA weeks 39 + 2 [37+0–41 + 1]) using capillary electrophoresis combined with mass spectrometry (CE-MS). Peptides were sequenced using CE-MS/MS or LC-MS/MS analysis and were deposited, matched, and annotated in a Microsoft SQL database for statistical analysis. We compared their abundance in urine of preterm and term born infants and performed a validation analysis as well as correlations to GA and clinical risk scores. Results: Our results confirmed significant differences in the abundance of peptides and the hypothesis of age-dependent urinary peptidome changes in preterm and term infants. In preterm infants, SLC38A10 (solute carrier family 38 member 10) is one of the most abundant peptides. Combined urinary peptides correlated with clinical risk scores (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This is the first study reporting GA-related urinary peptidome changes of preterm infants detected by CE-MS and a modulation of the peptidome with GA. Further research is required to locate peptidome clusters correlated with specific clinical complications and long-term outcome. Purpose: Awareness of normative values of extra orbital structures would provide useful information to interpret the radiological images better and use them for diagnostic purposes. This study aimed to reveal the average values of major extraocular structures measured on magnetic resonance images. Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, magnetic resonance (MR) images of 256 orbits of 128 patients were re-interpreted regarding the measurements of major orbital structures. Extraocular muscles, superior ophthalmic vein, and optic nerve-sheath complex were measured on orbital MR images of these patients. The data distributions were presented by box-plot analyses for each parameter, and the measurement results were analyzed regarding gender and age groups. Results: Lateral rectus muscle thickness (LR), inferior rectus muscle thickness (IR), globe position (GP), and interzygomatic line (IZL) values were higher in the male group than in the female group (p values were < 0.001, 0.003, 0.020, and < 0.001 respectively). LR, the thickness of the superior group muscles (SUP GR), IR, superior oblique muscle thickness (SOBL), and the thickness of optic nerve-sheath complex (ON) values indicated a significant relationship between age groups. There was a significant, positive, and low-level correlation between age and LR, SUP GR, and IR values (p values were < 0.001, 0.001, and < 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: This study provides quantitative data on normative values of orbital structures with gender and age group comparisons. Aim: To promote the implementation of right ventricular (RV) longitudinal strain in clinical practice, we sought to propose normal values for RV free wall (RVFWLS) and four-chamber longitudinal strain (RV4CLS) and investigate the association with clinical and echocardiographic parameters in participants from the general population. Methods and Results: Participants from the 5th Copenhagen City Heart Study (2011–2015)—a prospective cohort study—with available RV longitudinal strain measurements were included. RVFWLS and RV4CLS were assessed using two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography. In total, 2951 participants were included. Amongst 1297 participants without cardiovascular disease or risk factors (median age 44, 63% female), mean values of RVFWLS and RV4CLS were − 26.7% ± 5.2 (95% prediction interval (PI) − 36.9, − 16.5) and − 21.7% ± 3.4 (95%PI − 28.4, − 15.0), respectively. Women had significantly higher absolute values of RVFWLS and RV4CLS than men (mean − 27.5 ± 5.5 vs. − 25.4 ± 4.5, p < 0.001 and − 22.3 ± 3.5 vs. − 20.6 ± 3.0, p < 0.001, respectively). Absolute values of RVFWLS but not RV4CLS decreased significantly with increasing age in unadjusted linear regression. Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, RV s' and left ventricular global longitudinal strain were the most influential parameters associated with both RVFWLS and RV4CLS in multiple linear regression. Participants with cardiovascular disease (n = 1531) had a higher proportion of abnormal values of RVFWLS and RV4CLS compared to the healthy population (8% vs. 4%, p < 0.001 and 8% vs. 3%, p < 0.001, respectively). Aims Haemodynamic forces (HDFs) provided a feasible method to early detect cardiac mechanical abnormalities by estimating the intraventricular pressure gradients. The novel advances in assessment of HDFs using routine cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) cines shed new light on detection of preclinical dysfunction. However, definition of normal values for this new technique is the prerequisite for application in the clinic. Methods and results A total of 218 healthy volunteers [38.1 years ± 11.1; 111 male (50.9%)] were recruited and underwent CMR examinations with a 3.0T scanner. Balanced steady state free precession breath hold cine images were acquired, and HDF assessments were performed based on strain analysis. The normal values of longitudinal and transversal HDF strength [root mean square (RMS)] and ratio of transversal to longitudinal HDF were all evaluated in overall population as well as in both genders and in age-specific groups. The longitudinal RMS values (%) of HDFs were significantly higher in women (P < 0.05). Moreover, the HDF amplitudes significantly decreased with ageing in entire heartbeat, systole, diastole, systolic/diastolic transition, and diastolic deceleration, while increased in atrial thrust. In multivariable linear regression analysis, age, heart rate, and global longitudinal strain emerged as independent predictors of the amplitudes of longitudinal HDFs in entire heartbeat and systole, while left ventricular end-diastole volume index was also independently associated with longitudinal HDFs in diastole and diastolic deceleration (P < 0.05 for all). Conclusion Our study provided comprehensive normal values of HDF assessments using CMR as well as presented with specific age and sex stratification. Rationale: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is the gold standard to evaluate exertional breathlessness, a common and disabling symptom. However, the interpretation of breathlessness responses to CPET is limited by a scarcity of normative data. Objectives: We aimed to develop normative reference equations for breathlessness intensity (Borg 0-10 category ratio) response in men and women aged >40 years during CPET, in relation to power output (watts), oxygen uptake, and minute ventilation. Methods: Analysis of ostensibly healthy people aged >40 years undergoing symptom-limited incremental cycle CPET (10 W/min) in the CanCOLD (Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease) study. Participants had smoking histories ,5 pack-years and normal lung function and exercise capacity. The probability of each Borg 0-10 category ratio breathlessness intensity rating by power output, oxygen uptake, and minute ventilation (as an absolute or a relative value [percentage of predicted maximum]) was predicted using ordinal multinomial logistic regression. Model performance was evaluated by fit, calibration, and discrimination (C statistic) and externally validated in an independent sample (n = 86) of healthy Canadian adults. Results: We included 156 participants (43% women) from CanCOLD; the mean age was 65 (range, 42-91) years, and the mean body mass index was 26.3 (standard deviation, 3.8) kg/m2. Reference equations were developed for women and men separately, accounting for age and/or body mass. Model performance was high across all equations, including in the validation sample (C statistic for men = 0.81-0.92, C statistic for women = 0.81-0.96). Conclusions: Normative reference equations are provided to compare exertional breathlessness intensity ratings among individuals or groups and to identify and quantify abnormal breathlessness responses (scores greater than the upper limit of normal) during CPET. Background : Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurement is a noninvasive method that can be used for intracranial pressure monitoring. Several studies have investigated normal ONSD values in children, but no general consensus has been reached yet. Objectives: The aim of our study was to reveal normal ONSD, eyeball transverse diameter (ETD), and ONSD/ETD values on brain computed tomography (CT) in healthy children aged 1 month to 18 years. Methods: Children admitted to the emergency department with minor head trauma and had normal brain CT were included in the study. The demographic characteristics of the patients (age and sex) were recorded, and the patients were divided into four age groups: 1 month to 2 years, 2 to 4 years, 4 to 10 years, and 10 to 18 years. Results: The images of 332 patients were analyzed. When the median values of all measurement parameters (right and left ONSD, ETD, and ONSD/ETD) were compared between the right and left eyes, no statistically significant differences were found. When the same parameters were compared according to age group, the ONSD and ETD values differed significantly (values of males were found to be higher), but the ONSD proximal/ETD and ONSD middle/ETD values did not differ significantly. Conclusion: In our study, normal ONSD, ETD, and ONSD/ETD values were determined according to age and sex in healthy children. Background & Aims: The primary method for assessing anorectal function is high resolution anorectal manometry (HRAM). It is a useful tool in the diagnosis of different anorectal functional disorders such as fecal incontinence or dyssynergia. The aim of the present study was to propose a new set of normal values to be used in practice for East-European individuals, as it was proven that the results are highly influenced by race and sociocultural status. Methods: We conducted a study based on anorectal manometric values of healthy volunteers analyzed at Clinic Fundeni Institute, Bucharest, Romania, between 2017 and 2022. The anorectal manometry was performed using a solid-state catheter (Diversatek, 23 pressure sensors). All anorectal measurement values were analyzed using the Bioview Software Analysys, respecting the timing and the order from the standardized IAPWG protocol. Manometric measurements were summarized using mean, median, standard deviation, minimum and maximum values. The impact of age and gender on 8 different manometric parameters was further analyzed. Normal ranges for all numeric variables were estimated using the 5th and 95th percentiles of the measurements. Results: A total of 132 subjects (97 females, 35 males) were enrolled in the study. Median age was similar between groups (54 vs. 55 years). The values for rectal propulsion, anal gradient and anal relaxation proved to be higher in females under 54 years as opposed to older women. The values for resting pressure, maximum squeeze pressure, incremental squeeze pressure were significantly higher in males younger than 54. Regardless of age, values for maximum squeeze pressure, incremental squeeze pressure, duration of squeeze and rectal propulsion were found to be significantly higher in males than in females. Normal values of HRAM in healthy volunteers are presented in a table at the end of the study. Conclusions: The data presented in the current study are of high value and have a great impact on clinical practice, being the first study offering a spectrum of the normal values for HRAM in an Eastern Europe population. Continuous technologic development and updated recommendations for image acquisitions creates a need to update the current normal reference ranges for echocardiography. The best method of indexing cardiac volumes is unknown. The authors used 2- and 3-dimensional echocardiographic data from a large cohort of healthy individuals to provide updated normal reference data for dimensions and volumes of the cardiac chambers as well as central Doppler measurements. In the fourth wave of the HUNT (Trøndelag Health) study in Norway 2,462 individuals underwent comprehensive echocardiography. Of these, 1,412 (55.8% women) were classified as normal and formed the basis for updated normal reference ranges. Volumetric measures were indexed to body surface area and height in powers of 1 to 3. Normal reference data for echocardiographic dimensions, volumes, and Doppler measurements were presented according to sex and age. Left ventricular ejection fraction had lower normal limits of 50.8% for women and 49.6% for men. According to sex-specific age groups, the upper normal limits for left atrial end-systolic volume indexed to body surface area ranged from 44 mL/m2 to 53 mL/m2, and the corresponding upper normal limit for right ventricular basal dimension ranged from 43 mm to 53 mm. Indexing to height raised to the power of 3 accounted for more of the variation between sexes than indexing to body surface area. The authors present updated normal reference values for a wide range of echocardiographic measures of both left- and right-side ventricular and atrial size and function from a large healthy population with a wide age-span. Objectives: We aimed to provide data of nerve sizes and echogenicity reference values of the Lithuanian population. Methods: High-resolution ultrasound was bilaterally performed according to the Ultrasound Pattern Sum Score and Neuropathy ultrasound protocols for healthy Lithuanian adults. Cross-sectional area (CSA) measurement and echogenicity were used as the main parameters for investigation. Echogenicity was evaluated using ImageJ, and nerves were categorized in classes according to echogenicity. Results: Of 125 subjects enrolled, 63 were males (mean age 47.57 years, range 25–78 years) and 62 were females (mean age 50.50 years, range 25–80 years). Reference values of nerve sizes and values of echogenicity as a fraction of black in percentage of cervical roots, upper and middle trunks of the brachial plexus and the following nerves: vagal, median, ulnar, radial, superficial radial, tibial, fibular, and sural in standard regions were established. Mild to moderate correlations were found between nerves CSA, echogenicity values and anthropometric measurements with the differences according to sex. Inter-rater (ICC 0.93; 95% CI 0.92–0.94) and intra-rater (ICC 0.94; 95% CI 0.93–0.95) reliability was excellent. Conclusions: Reference values of nerve size and echogenicity of Lithuanians were presented for the first time as a novel such kind of publication from the Baltic countries.

Background: Echocardiographic myocardial work is a new load-independent echocardiographic technique to quantify left ventricle (LV) systolic performance. Our aim was to establish normal values for echocardiographic myocardial work in a large population of healthy children. Methods: For all the subjects 4-, 2-, and 3-chamber-view videos were stored. The following parameters were obtained by offline analysis: the global myocardial work (GMW), the global myocardial constructive work (GCW), the global myocardial wasted work (GWW), and the global myocardial work efficiency (GWE). Age, weight, height, heart rate, and body surface area (BSA) were used as independent variables in the statistical analysis. Results: In all, 516 healthy subjects (age range, 1 day—18 years; median age, 8.2 ± 5.3 years; 55.8% male; body surface area (BSA) range, 0.16 to 2.12 m2) were included. GWI, GCW, and GWW increased with weight, height, and BSA (ρ ranging from 0.635 to 0.226, p all < 0.01); GWI and GCW positively correlated with age (ρ 0.653 and 0.507). After adjusting for BSA differences, females showed higher mean GWI (p = 0.002) and GCW values (p < 0.001), thus Z-score equations for gender have been presented. Conclusions: We provided MW values in a large population of healthy pediatric subjects including lower ages. MW values increased with age and body size and, interestingly, were higher in females than in men. These data cover a gap in current nomograms and may serve as a baseline for the evaluation of MW analysis in children with congenital and acquired heart diseases.

Background: Although coronary artery nomograms in children have been published, data on Caucasian children are lacking. The aim of this study is to provide: (i) a full dataset of coronary artery diameters in healthy children and (ii) a comparison among major previous nomograms. Materials and Methods: We prospectively evaluated 606 healthy subjects (age range, 1 days–2 scores, were logarithmic (ln[y] = a + b*ln[x]). Predicted values and Z-score boundaries by BSA are provided. Our ranges of normality are slightly lower than those, diverging from −0.22 to −0.59 Z-scores for the left main coronary artery and from −0.23 to −0.3 Z-scores for the right coronary artery. Conclusions: We report a complete dataset of normal echocardiography coronary artery diameter (including new measures of the proximal origin) values in a large population of healthy children. Our data were statistically like those of north American nomograms.

Background: Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) native T1 and T2 mapping serve as robust, contrast-agent-free diagnostic tools, but hardware- and software-specific sources of variability limit the generalizability of data across CMR platforms, consequently limiting the interpretability of patient-specific parametric data. Z-scores are used to describe the relationship of observed values to the mean results as obtained in a sufficiently large normal sample. They have been successfully used to describe the severity of quantifiable abnormalities in medicine, specifically in children and adolescents. The objective of this study was to observe whether z-scores can improve the comparability of T1 and T2 mapping values across CMR scanners, field strengths, and sequences from different vendors in the same participant rather than different participants (as seen in previous studies). Methods: Fifty-one healthy volunteers (26 men/25 women, mean age = 43 ± 13.51) underwent three CMR exams on three different scanners, using a Modified Look-Locker Inversion Recovery (MOLLI) 5-(3)− 3 sequence to quantify myocardial T1. For T2 mapping, a True Fast Imaging with steady-state free precession (TRUFI) sequence was used on a 3 T Skyra™ (Siemens), and a T2 Fast Spin Echo (FSE) sequence was used on 1.5 T Artist™ (GE) and 3.0 T Premier™ (GE) scanners. The averages of basal and mid-ventricular short axis slices were used to derive means and standard deviations of global mapping values. We used intra-class comparisons (ICC), repeated measures ANOVA, and paired Student’s t-tests for statistical analyses. Aims Mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE) is a simple and reliable index for evaluating left ventricular (LV) systolic function, particularly in patients with poor image quality; however, the lack of reference values limits its widespread use. This study aimed to establish the normal ranges for MAPSE measured using motion-mode (M-mode) and two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) and to explore its principal determinants. Methods and results This multicentre, prospective, cross-sectional study included 1952 healthy participants [840 men (43%); age range, 18–80 years] from 55 centres. MAPSE was measured using M-mode echocardiography and 2D-STE. The results showed that women had a higher MAPSE than men and MAPSE decreased with age. The age- and sex-specific reference values for MAPSE were established for these two methods. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that MAPSE on M-mode echocardiography correlated with age and MAPSE on 2D-STE with age, blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and LV volume. Moreover, MAPSE measured by 2D-STE correlated more strongly with global longitudinal strain compared with that measured using M-mode echocardiography. Conclusion Normal MAPSE reference values were established based on age and sex. BP, heart rate, and LV volume are potential factors that influence MAPSE and should be considered in clinical practice. Reported ranges of normal values for echocardiographic measurements are mostly issued from studies performed in Caucasians. This study is a part of TAHES, a population-based prospective cohort study in Benin and aims to establish normal reference values for echocardiographic cardiac chambers dimensions and Doppler parameters in a Sub-Saharan African population. We included 486 healthy (non-diabetic, non-obese and normotensive) individuals (202 men and 284 women, age 37[30–47] years, BSA 1.58 (1.47–1.67) m2). End-diastolic interventricular septal wall thickness, left ventricular (LV) internal diameter, posterior wall thicknesses, and systolic LV internal diameter were respectively at 10[9–12], 45[43–49], 9[8–11], 29[26–34] mm for male and 9[7–10], 43[41–46], 8[7–], 29[27–32] mm for females. LV mass was significantly greater in males even after normalization for the body surface area (98[85–117] vs. 82[71–96] g/m2). Upper limits of BSA-indexed LV mass were 145 g/m2 for males and 124 g/m2 for females. The allometric exponent that described the LV mass-Height relationship were 2.5 in both sexes but 1.2 for males and 1.8 for females separately. E-wave velocity was 0.79 [0.65–0.90] cm/sec in males and 0.88 [0.78–0.99]cm/sec in females (p < 0.0001) but without significant gender differences in E/A ratio (limits: 0.75 and 2.1). The e′-wave velocity (lower limit = 8 cm/sec) decreased and E/e′ ratio (Upper limit = 9) increased with aging. Upper limit of BSA-indexed left atrium volume was 38 mL/m2 for both sexes. Background: Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are an important tool for the diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases. In NCS, factors such as temperature, age, sex, body metrics, and recording technique can affect the values. There are currently no universal normative data. The standardization of NCS is essential for the reliable and consistent identification of pathologic conditions for each laboratory. Aim: We wanted to obtain normal values of our electrophysiology laboratory for the Turkish population. Materials and Methods: The volunteer group consisted of 120 people aged 15–74 years. They were distributed into 12 subgroups according to their age. Each subgroup included five male and five female subjects. Age, sex, weight, height, profession, body mass index, and hand preferences were recorded. Median and ulnar NCS were performed by two experienced clinical neurophysiologists. The skin temperature was corrected to 35.5°C, which was the highest measured value. Results: Age 50 years was used for the cutoff point for nerve conduction velocities (NCVs) because there was no significant difference within the groups aged ≥50 years and 50 years were significantly different. NCVs and action potential amplitudes were higher in females than males in both age groups. Women had higher NCV values and action potential amplitudes of motor and sensory fibers. Conclusion: Age, temperature, and sex are important factors that affect NCS. We believe this study will provide normal values for future studies, especially in the Turkish population.

Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) is a promising biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of interstitial lung disease. However, reference intervals in Northern Europeans remain to be established using a latex-particle-enhanced turbidimetric immunoassay. The participants were Danish blood donors subjected to strict health requirements. Analyses were performed using the Nanopia KL-6 reagent on the cobas 8000 module c502. Sex-partitioned reference intervals were determined using a parametric quantile approach according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guideline EP28-A3c. The study included 240 participants—121 females and 119 males. The common reference interval was 59.4–398.5 U/mL (95% confidence intervals (CI) for the lower and upper limits were 47.3–71.9 and 369.5–430.1, respectively). For females, the reference interval was 56.8–324.0 U/mL (95% CIs for the lower and upper limits were 36.1–77.6 and 303.3–344.7, respectively). For males, the reference interval was 51.5–448.7 U/mL (95% CIs for the lower and upper limits were 32.8–71.2 and 397.3–508.1, respectively). These results emphasize the importance of sex partitioning when evaluating KL-6 reference intervals. Opposite to other immunoglobulin (Ig) classes and subclasses, there is no consensus on the definition of normal levels of serum total IgE. However, longitudinal studies on birth cohorts produced growth charts of total IgE levels in helminth-free and never atopic children and defining the normal ranges of total serum IgE concentration at the individual, rather than population, level. Accordingly, very 'low IgE producers' (i.e., children whose tIgE level belong to the lowest percentiles) became atopic while keeping their total IgE levels in a range considered 'normal' if compared to the general age-matched population but 'abnormally high' if projected on the tIgE growth chart against the trajectory of that child's own percentile levels. In 'low IgE producers', the IgE-specific activity, i.e., the ratio between allergen-specific and total IgE, is more important than the absolute specific IgE levels to confirm causality between allergen exposure and allergic symptoms. Patients with allergic rhinitis or peanut anaphylaxis but low or undetectable allergen-specific IgE levels must therefore be reconsidered considering their total IgE levels. Low IgE producers have been also associated with common variable immunodeficiency, lung diseases, and malignancies. A few epidemiological studies have shown a higher risk of malignancies in very low IgE producers, leading to a debated hypothesis proposing a novel, evolutionistic-relevant function for IgE antibodies for antitumor immune surveillance. Introduction: Patient's body size is a significant determinant of aortic dimensions. Overweight and obesity underestimate aortic dilatation when indexing diameters by body surface area (BSA). We compared the indexation of aortic dimensions by height and BSA in subjects with and without overweight to determine the upper normal limit (UNL). Methods: The MATEAR study was a prospective, observational, and multicenter study (53 echocardiography laboratories in Argentina). We included 879 healthy adult individuals (mean age: 39.7 ± 11.4 years, 399 men) without hypertension, bicuspid aortic valve, aortic aneurysm, or genetic aortopathies. Echocardiograms were acquired and proximal aorta measured at the sinus of Valsalva (SV), sinotubular junction (STJ), and ascending aorta (AA) levels (EACVI/ASE guidelines). We compared absolute and indexed aortic diameters by height and BSA between groups (men with body mass index [BMI] < 25 and BMI = 25, women with BMI < 25 and BMI = 25). Results: Indexing of aortic diameters by BSA showed significantly lower values in overweight and obese subjects compared to normal weight in their respective gender (for women: SV 1.75 cm/m2 in BMI < 25 vs. 1.52 cm/m2 in BMI between 25 and 29.9 vs. 1.41 cm/m2 in BMI = 30; at the STJ: 1.53 cm/m2 vs. 1.37 cm/m2 vs. 1.25 cm/m2; and at the AA: 1.63 cm/m2 vs. 1.50 cm/m2 vs. 1.37 cm/m2; all p < 0.0001 and for men, all p < 0.0001). These differences disappeared when indexing by height in both gender groups (all p = NS). Conclusion: While indexing aortic diameters by BSA in obese and overweight subjects underestimate aortic dilation, the use of aortic height index (AHI) yields a similar UNL for individuals with normal weight, overweight, and obesity. Aims Recently developed in-line automated cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) myocardial perfusion mapping has been shown to be reproducible and comparable with positron emission tomography (PET), and can be easily integrated into clinical workflows. Bringing quantitative myocardial perfusion CMR into routine clinical care requires knowledge of sex- and age-specific normal values in order to define thresholds for disease detection. This study aimed to establish sex- and age-specific normal values for stress and rest CMR myocardial blood flow (MBF) in healthy volunteers. Methods and results A total of 151 healthy volunteers recruited from two centres underwent adenosine stress and rest myocardial perfusion CMR. In-line automatic reconstruction and post processing of perfusion data were implemented within the Gadgetron software framework, creating pixel-wise perfusion maps. Rest and stress MBF were measured, deriving myocardial perfusion reserve (MPR) and were subdivided by sex and age. Mean MBF in all subjects was 0.62 ± 0.13 mL/g/min at rest and 2.24 ± 0.53 mL/g/min during stress. Mean MPR was 3.74 ± 1.00. Compared with males, females had higher rest (0.69 ± 0.13 vs. 0.58 ± 0.12 mL/g/min, P < 0.01) and stress MBF (2.41 ± 0.47 vs. 2.13 ± 0.54 mL/g/min, P = 0.001). Stress MBF and MPR showed significant negative correlations with increasing age (r = −0.43, P < 0.001 and r = −0.34, P < 0.001, respectively). Conclusion Fully automated in-line CMR myocardial perfusion mapping produces similar normal values to the published CMR and PET literature. Aims Aortic valve area (AVA) used for echocardiographic assessment of aortic stenosis (AS) has been traditionally interpreted independently of sex, age and race. As differences in normal values might impact clinical decision-making, we aimed to establish sex-, age- and race-specific normative values for AVA and Doppler parameters using data from the World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography (WASE) Study. Methods and results Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiographic studies were obtained from 1903 healthy adult subjects (48% women). Measurements of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) diameter and Doppler parameters, including AV and LVOT velocity time integrals (VTIs), AV mean pressure gradient, peak velocity, were obtained according to ASE/EACVI guidelines. AVA was calculated using the continuity equation. Compared with men, women had smaller LVOT diameters and AVA values, and higher AV peak velocities and mean gradients (all P < 0.05). LVOT and AV VTI were significantly higher in women (P < 0.05), and both parameters increased with age in both sexes. AVA differences persisted after indexing to body surface area. According to the current diagnostic criteria, 13.5% of women would have been considered to have mild AS and 1.4% moderate AS. LVOT diameter and AVA were lower in older subjects, both men and women, and were lower in Asians, compared with whites and blacks. Conclusion WASE data provide clinically relevant information about significant differences in normal AVA and Doppler parameters according to sex, age, and race. Purpose: Nerve size is a commonly used sonographic parameter when assessing suspected entrapment of the ulnar nerve. We aimed to create a robust set of normal values, based on a critical review of published normal values. Methods: We performed a systematic evaluation of studies on normal ulnar nerve sizes, identified in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. Using meta-analyses, we determined pooled mean cross-sectional area (CSA) values for different anatomical locations of the ulnar nerve throughout the arm. Subgroup analyses were performed for gender, probe frequency, in- or exclusion of diabetic patients, position of the elbow and Asian versus other populations. Results: We identified 90 studies of which 77 studies were included for further analyses after quality review, resulting in data from 5772 arms of 3472 participants. Subgroup analyses show lower CSA values at at the wrist crease and proximal to the wrist crease when using low frequency probes (< 15 MHz) and at the wrist crease, proximal to the wrist crease, proximal forearm and the distal upper arm in Asians. CSA values were lower when in flexed position compared to extended position for the cubital tunnel inlet only. No difference was found for gender. Conclusions: Our systematic review provides a comprehensive set of normal values at sites along the entire length of the ulnar nerve. Background: Measurement of ventricular volumes and function using MRI is an important tool in pediatric congenital heart disease. However, normal values for children are sparce and analysis methods are inconsistent. Purpose: To propose biventricular reference values in children for two MRI postprocessing (contouring) techniques. Study Type: Retrospective. Subjects: A total of 154 children from two institutions (13.9 ± 2.8 years; 101 male) that were referred for a clinical MRI study. Field Strength/Sequence: 1.5 T; balanced steady‐state free precession (bSSFP) sequence. Assessment: Left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) end‐diastolic and end‐systolic volumes (LVEDV, LVESV, RVEDV, RVESV) and end‐diastolic and end‐systolic myocardial mass (LVEDMM, LVESMM, RVEDMM, RVESMM) were measured from short‐axis images using two contouring techniques: 1) papillary muscles, trabeculations and the moderator band were included in the ventricular blood volume and excluded from the myocardial mass, 2) papillary muscles, trabeculations and the moderator band were excluded from the ventricular volume and included in the ventricular mass. Statistical Tests: Univariable and multivariable linear regression models were used to evaluate relationships between sex, weight, height, body surface area (BSA) and age and volumetric results. Reference graphs and tables were created with the LMS‐method. Contouring techniques were compared by intraclass correlation, regression analysis and Bland–Altman plots. A P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Height and BSA were significantly associated with LVESV (method 1) and with LVEDV and RVEDV (method 2). LVESV (method 2), RVESV (both methods), RVEDV (method 1), and LVEDMM and RVEDMM (both methods), showed significant associations with height and weight. LVSV and RVSV (both methods) were significantly associated with BSA and weight. RVESV (method 1) was significantly associated with age. Gender showed significant associations for all parameters. Data Conclusion: The proposed pediatric reference values can be used in the diagnosis and follow‐up of congenital or acquired heart disease and for research purposes. Foot and ankle deformities have translational and rotational components in multiple planes, at multiple levels. Semi-automatic segmentation is a relatively new technology, which when used with weight-bearing CT (WBCT), can build an accurate model of the foot and calculate the orientation and relationships of bones under physiological load. However, few papers report reference values using these techniques. We report normative values for key bony relationships based on semi-automated analysis of WBCT. This was a single-centre, retrospective analysis of 100 feet without deformity from 55 adult patients undergoing WBCT as part of routine clinical activity (mean age 40.5 ± 17.3 years). Imaging was analysed using Bonelogic 2.1 (DISIOR, Finland). Semi-automatic segmentation was used to compute the various bony axes in 3-dimensional space. Selected coronal, axial and sagittal plane relationships were then calculated for bones of the hindfoot, midfoot and forefoot. Data is presented on axial and sagittal plane relationships between the metatarsals in the forefoot, and the metatarsals and cuneiforms in the midfoot. In the hindfoot, the calcaneal pitch, talar-first-metatarsal angles, talonavicular coverage angles and Saltzman angles are reported. Coronal plane axes and their relationships are reported at multiple levels from hindfoot to forefoot. Results are presented as mean values with standard deviations and 95% confidence intervals. We present an observational analysis of the normal values from non-deformed feet. We highlight the major relationships in the axial, sagittal and coronal planes as obtained by semi-automated analysis of WBCT. This data may serve as a reference for future research. Simple Summary: We explored the effect of age, gender, weight-for-height indices, sedation protocol, and housing conditions on the hematologic and serum biochemical values of captive rhesus and cynomolgus macaques. Several blood parameters demonstrated significant and clinically relevant changes in relation to the investigated variables. The results will provide veterinarians and researchers with important reference intervals for evaluating experimental results and health control from rhesus and cynomolgus macaques. Several physiological characteristics and housing conditions are known to affect hematologic and serum biochemical values in macaques. However, the studies that have been conducted either report values calculated based on a small number of animals, were designed specifically to document the effect of a particular condition on the normal range of hematologic and serum biochemical values, or used parametric assumptions to calculate hematologic and serum biochemical reference intervals. We conducted a retrospective longitudinal cohort study to estimate reference intervals for hematologic and serum biochemical values in clinically healthy macaques based on observed percentiles without parametric assumptions. Data were obtained as part of the Biomedical Primate Research Centre (Rijswijk, The Netherlands) health monitoring program between 2018 and 2021. In total, 4009 blood samples from 1475 macaques were analyzed with a maximum of one repeat per year per animal. Data were established by species, gender, age, weight-for-height indices, pregnancy, sedation protocol, and housing conditions. Most of the parameters profoundly affected just some hematologic and serum biochemical values. A significant glucose difference was observed between the ketamine and ketamine-medetomidine sedation protocols. The results emphasize the importance of establishing uniform experimental groups with validated animal husbandry and housing conditions to improve the reproducibility of the experiments. Cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease is characterized by increased ventilation inhomogeneity (VI), as measured by multiple-breath washout (MBW). Lung clearance index (LCI) is the most reported VI outcome. This study aimed to evaluate historically published reference equations for sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) MBW outcomes, to data collected using updated commercial SF6MBW equipment, and to produce device-specific equations if necessary. SF6MBW was performed in 327 healthy children aged 0.1–18.4 yr [151 (46%) girls], 191 (58.4%) <3 yr. z-Scores were calculated from published reference equations (FRC and LCI) and multivariate linear regression was performed to produce device-specific reference equations. Due to increasing residual standard deviations with increasing LCI values, investigation of methods for improvement were investigated, based on the relationship between VI and dead space ventilation (VD/VT; dead space volume/tidal volume) in a cohort of 59 healthy children, 26 children with CF (n = 138 test occasions), and 49 adults with lung disease. Historical SF6MBW reference equations were unsuitable for EXHALYZER D data. In contrast to LCI and log10(LCI), 1/LCI (ventilation distribution efficiency; VDE) was linearly related to VD/VT, with z-scores linearly related to its absolute values. Reference equations were reported for VDE and log10(FRC). Significant predictors for VDE and log10(FRC), respectively, were log10(age) and sex, and log10(height), sex, and posture. VDE is potentially a better index of VI than LCI, particularly in more advanced CF lung disease and also for longitudinal monitoring. The objective of this study was therefore to perform the first systematic review of published tIgE reference intervals to aid laboratorians in choosing appropriate sources. • Participant selection (whether individuals with in vitro sIgE sensitisation were included or excluded) and the statistical methods employed were identified as the two most important factors influencing the established tIgE RI. • This review underpins the importance for laboratories to carefully consider the study characteristics of tIgE RI studies, and argues in the case of tIgE it might be more appropriate to report multiple partitioned RIs to the interpreting clinician. • In addition, further efforts should be made to harmonise and improve the reporting of tIgE reference interval studies. Total IgE (tIgE) is a frequently requested analyte in patients presenting with symptoms of atopy. Although tIgE has limited clinical utility in the diagnosis of atopic diseases, it is still important that appropriate reference intervals are provided to the intepreting clinician. Concerns have recently been raised whether laboratories may be using outdated tIgE reference intervals. The aim of this study was therefore to perform the first systematic literature review of tIgE reference intervals to aid laboratories in choosing appropriate sources. A search was performed in MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Library from time of inception to July 2024. Eligible studies had to provide an estimate of paediatric and/or adult tIgE reference intervals using current generation immunoassays. The methodology followed PRISMA guidelines, and the study protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42023396441). A total of 1667 records were screened of which 20 studies remained after full text review. The studies included 23 910 individuals and covered 18 countries. Upper reference limits varied significantly, with participant selection (inclusion or exclusion of in vitro confirmed specific IgE sensitised individuals) and statistical methods identified as the most important factors influencing the upper reference limit. This review emphasises the need for laboratories to carefully evaluate the participant selection criteria and employed statistical methods whilst determining which tIgE reference intervals are the most appropriate to report to clinicians. ABSTRACT Background There are no data of reference values on 24-hour multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH (pH-MII) monitoring in Argentinian populations. Objective Our aim was to obtain the normal values of pH-MII variables among healthy asymptomatic volunteers in a metropolitan Health Care Center of Argentina, and to compare them with data already published from other regions around the world. Methods A cross-sectional study was undertaken in a tertiary referral center in Buenos Aires. We enrolled healthy subjects and asked them to undergo esophageal pH-MII 24hours monitoring. pH-MII variables were recorded and described. Results Median reflux events was 20.5 (25-75%, 95%) interquartile range: (14-46, 50) and proximal reflux episodes was 2.5 (0-10, 11). Sixty percent were acid reflux episodes: 12 (5-29, 38), representing a relatively low value when compared to those reported in European, American and Chinese populations. Conclusion Our study shows the first reference of normal values of gastroesophageal reflux in an Argentinian population. We found a total number of reflux events and a total number of proximal reflux events lower than what was reported until this date by other authors.

Abstract Background Dynamic whole-body (D-WB) FDG PET/CT is a recently developed technique that allows direct reconstruction of multiparametric images of metabolic rate of FDG uptake (MRFDG) and “free” FDG (DVFDG). Multiparametric images have a markedly different appearance than the conventional SUV images obtained by static PET imaging, and normal values of MRFDG and DVFDG in frequently used reference tissues and organs are lacking. The aim of this study was therefore to: (1) provide an overview of normal MRFDG and DVFDG values and range of variation in organs and tissues; (2) analyse organ time-activity curves (TACs); (3) validate the accuracy of directly reconstructed MRFDG tissue values versus manually calculated K i (and MRFDG) values; and (4) explore correlations between demographics, blood glucose levels and MRFDG values. D-WB data from 126 prospectively recruited patients (100 without diabetes and 26 with diabetes) were retrospectively analysed. Participants were scanned using a 70-min multiparametric PET acquisition protocol on a Siemens Biograph Vision 600 PET/CT scanner. 13 regions (bone, brain grey and white matter, colon, heart, kidney, liver, lung, skeletal muscle of the back and thigh, pancreas, spleen, and stomach) as well as representative pathological findings were manually delineated, and values of static PET (SUV), D-WB PET (K i , MRFDG and DVFDG) and individual TACs were extracted. Multiparametric values were compared with manual TAC-based calculations of K i and MRFDG, and correlations with blood glucose, age, weight, BMI, and injected tracer dose were explored. Results Tissue and organ MRFDG values showed little variation, comparable to corresponding SUV variation. Objective: To describe the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automate the e-norms method, a technique used to derive normative data from patient studies, mixed datasets that contain both normal and abnormal data. Multiple studies have shown that normal values collected with the e-norms method compare favorably with those collected from healthy volunteers using traditional methods., Methods: OpenAI's ChatGPT was used by the author to build a Python script to automate the e-norms method's plateau identification, the area of the e-norms curve where a variable's normal values lie. Objective: Serum prolactin measurements are important in the differential diagnosis of pituitary masses and subfertility. We observed discrepancies in serum prolactin levels in several patients measured with different immunoassays. Despite differences in assay results, the reference intervals (RIs) derived by the manufacturers were similar. In this study, we aimed to investigate prolactin assay differences and to re-establish RIs for different prolactin immunoassays., Methods: For the assay comparison, serum samples were collected from men and women visiting the Amsterdam UMC hospital. Prolactin levels were measured using the AtellicaTM IM analyzer (Siemens Healthineers) and the Cobas (Roche Diagnostics) immunoassay. RIs for prolactin were re-established for men, premenopausal women, and postmenopausal women for both the Atellica and Cobas immunoassay., Results: Prolactin levels measured using the Cobas immunoassay were 1.75 times higher than those measured using the Atellica immunoassay. The re-established RIs for Atellica and Cobas confirmed these findings and were <0.32 U/L; <0.55 U/L for men; <0.64 U/L; <0.86 U/L for premenopausal women, and <0.31 U/L; <0.59 U/L for postmenopausal women, respectively, for Atellica and Cobas assays. The re-established RIs of the Atellica assay matched the current and manufacturer RIs, whereas those for Cobas differed substantially., Conclusions: Prolactin levels are assay-dependent, and the re-established RIs are different for the Atellica and Cobas assays. We recommend that laboratory specialists and manufacturers periodically review prolactin assay RIs, as incorrect RIs can lead to misinterpretation of prolactin levels and unnecessary referrals and further laboratory testing, as we have experienced., Plain Language Summary: We showed that the results of different prolactin tests disagree by 75%, which hinders correct interpretation. Thus, we established test-specific prolactin normal values. By being aware of test differences and using test-specific normal values, one can ensure correct interpretation and prevent unnecessary referrals and concern.
