Objective: Analyze how pandemics contribute to the increase in social inequalities in the health sector. Method: Data are taken from Eurobarometer 97.3. We use the Generalized Structural Equation Model (GSEM) methodology for this analysis. Results: People with lower socio-economic status, considered to be of lower social class, living in areas with worse infrastructure for practicing physical activity, and in countries with high levels of social inequality, are less likely to engage in leisure time physical activity. In addition, these individuals are more likely to interrupt physical activity practices as a result of COVID-19. In contrast, people of higher socio-economic status, considered to be of upper class, living in contexts where there are opportunities for physical activity, and in countries with low levels of social inequality, are more likely/ to belong to the group of those who increased the frequency of practicing physical activity in free time/ to have increased the frequency of their leisure time physical activity. Conclusions: There are widespread inequalities in leisure time physical activity linked to personal variables (social status and subjective social class) and contextual variables (infrastructures and Gini Index) that were significantly aggravated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract. Physical inactivity refers to a level of physical activity insufficient to meet current recommendations and is considered a current public health pandemic. Faced with these realities, it is important to be able to identify how different socioeconomic levels (SES) are linked to levels of physical inactivity and the environment in young people. This will provide us with information on how these social determinants are key to the quality of life and health in the youth population. The objective of this review is to account for the impact of socioeconomic level as a determinant of physical inactivity in adolescents. The present narrative review reflects on the latent need to delve deeper into this type of topics, because levels of physical activity are determinants of health for future life. In conclusion, the authors propose that there is a relationship between SES and physical inactivity, considering that the higher the SES, the lower the levels of physical inactivity. Abstract. Introduction: During adolescence, the practice of physical activity (PA) decreases, as well as the consumption of healthy foods, which could be attributed to the socioeconomic status. Objective: Associating socioeconomic status with quality of food and level of PA in adolescents. Methods: Descriptive - correlational study, which evaluated 158 students between 14-15 years old belonging to municipal and private establishments in Talca, Chile through a non-probabilistic sampling for convenience. The PA Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A) questionnaire was applied, the quality of food was assessed with the global food quality index and the Adimark survey to assess the socioeconomic status. Results: 41.2% of the participants reported an "unhealthy" diet, 51.2% had a PA level below average and 44.1% categorized themselves with a "medium" socioeconomic status. On the other hand, a statistically significant association was observed between socioeconomic status and food quality (p=0.01), but no significant association was found between socioeconomic status and PA level (p=0.89). Conclusions: There is an association between the quality of diet of adolescents with the socioeconomic status of the home where they reside, however this was not associated with the level of PA. Considering the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescents, it is necessary to promote the practice of PA and a good quality diet in all socioeconomic status, but particularly in the most vulnerable levels. Keywords: physical activity, socioeconomic status, adolescents, diet.

Argumentation is a type of discourse in which a speaker defends a claim in a discussion. The present work focuses on the argumentative complexity and the evaluative and evidential resources that characterize the disputes of children of different socioeconomic levels. We analyzed 94 disputes between 4-year-old children and other children (5 to 10 years old) in situations of spontaneous play registered in homes of middle and low socioeconomic status (SES). The analysis identified marginal differences in argumentative complexity between the groups. On the other hand, significant differences were found in evaluative expressions of emotion and in deontic and exclamatory evidential markers, more frequently used by the low SES group. The mid SES group tends to use a higher number of expressions of causality and connectors. The results are discussed with reference to the findings of previous research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The social psychological study of social class and socioeconomic status (SES) has burgeoned in the last 15 years and much progress has been made. Yet, researchers rarely explain their theoretical standpoint, clearly define social class and/or SES or justify their choice of how to measure it. This, we argue, is holding back progress. We suggest that social class should be considered a social category into which we are socialized that affords differing amounts of economic, social and cultural resources, while SES only captures one's current access to various forms of capital. We briefly review literature that suggests that the meanings, understandings and thus operationalizations of social class and SES vary across groups and contexts. We then give an overview of the special issue, which documents the advances that can be gained from taking a more nuanced and theoretically informed approach to studying social class and SES. Studies on socioeconomic status (SES) have recently increased in social psychology. The most used indicators to measure objective SES are income and educational level (usually standardizing and summing the scores of these variables). However, income and education possibly have different, even opposite effects on certain variables. Across seven studies, using data from previous research and from international databases, we show that this is true both for prosocial behaviour and for variables related to prosocial behaviour. A higher educational level tends to positively predict prosocial behaviour (Studies 1a–1d) and structural attributions of poverty (Studies 2 and 3), and negatively predict scores for meritocratic beliefs (Study 3) and just world beliefs (Study 4). In most cases, income showed a reverse trend or did not predict the outcome. We discuss the broader implications both for the study of prosocial behaviour and social class. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHILD writing , *CONTROL (Psychology) , *READING , *EXECUTIVE function , *LANGUAGE acquisition , *EMOTION regulation , *SOCIOECONOMICS , *COGNITIVE ability , *COGNITIVE development , *ORTHOGRAPHY & spelling , *WORD recognition - Abstract
Learning to read and write requires a set of initial skills, such as lexical development, identification of letters and words, association between grapheme and phoneme, handling the spelling code. Children begin to internalize these skills, and knowledge, at an early age, in the interactions they have with others in their family context. The sociocultural characteristics, the availability of educational, and literacy resources in family, vary depending on the socioeconomic status of the family, and differentially model the acquisition of these skills (Andrés et al., 2010; Piacente et al., 2006; Rosemberg & Stein, 2009). In Argentina, it has been reported that children from marginalized contexts tend to be exposed to fewer words, and less diversity of words, in everyday interactions at home, which can affect language development and consequently, learning to read and write (Rosemberg & Stein, 2009). Child's cognitive development is another factor of interest. In recent decades, the predictive role of executive functions (EF) has gained relevance: a set of cognitive control capacities involved in cognitive, emotional and behavioral self-regulation. The literature documented interrelationships between developmental trajectories of executive functions, language development, and learning to read and write (Booth et al., 2014; De Franchis et al., 2017; Marder & Barreyro, 2019; Skibbe et al., 2019). In line with these postulates, this study set out to analyze the predictive value of EFs -attention, planning, inhibitory control, metacognition and cognitive flexibility-in initial reading and writing skills (IRWS, letter-word identification and dictation) in Argentine children, controlling for the effects of age and family socioeconomic status (SES). A causal-correlational transectional design was used. The intentional non-probabilistic sample was made up by 186 children (48 % girls), 6 to 10 years old, belonging to marginalized urban contexts (41 % low superior SES, 39 % low inferior SES, and 20 % marginal SES). The children were evaluated with Word Identification and Dictation of Woodcock-Muñoz Achievement Battery, and a set of neuropsychological tests of FE. The SES was estimated based on the educational level and occupation of the children's parents. The analysis of structural equations indicated that the proposed model presented an excellent fit to the data (χ2(23, 178) = 27.52, p = .234; GFI = .97; CFI = .99; RMSEA = .03) and explained the 66 % of the variance of the children's IRWS. EFs were the factor that most strongly modulated IRWS performance in children, presenting direct effects (β = .60), and mediating the impact of the variables age (β= .34) and SES (β= .16). In line with the literature (Booth et al., 2014; De Franchis et al., 2017; Marder y Barreyro, 2019; Skibbe et al., 2019), the results report that EFs are significant resources for learning to read and write in infancy, and make three contributions of interest. First, the implication of EFs in tasks of reading words, writing letters and handling the spelling code, was documented in children 6 to 10 years of age, which could indicate that the automation of IRWS would be achieved later in schoolchildren from marginalized contexts. Another finding of interest was to document that the evolutionary gains in the EFs drove the learning of the HILE, which indicates an overlap in the development trajectory, and an optimal moment, for its strengthening. Another contribution was to report that the EFs modulated the relationship between the family SES and the IRWS. Taken together, these findings make it possible to identify EF as an intervention target, while its strengthening may be a way to reduce the educational gap between the most and least favored children. Introduction: social or school factors influence the acquisition and selection of foods to be consumed. Objective: identifying the socioeconomic or school level that has the greatest weight in the acquisition of food in Mexican households. Methods: cross-sectional, retrospective and comparative study based on the database of the 2018 National Household Expenditure-Income Survey of Mexico. We worked with the national total of 73,274 Mexican households. The variables considered were: expenditure module of food and beverages, school grade of the head of the family and socioeconomic status to which the household belongs. For the statistical analysis, the following tests were used: linear regression analysis, as well as variance analysis, Snedecor’s F test, post-hoc test and Schefé’s confirmatory test. Results: socioeconomic status has a greater weight (p<0.001) for food acquisition. Sugary drinks were the most widely acquired in all social and school levels. The lowest social level is the one who acquires the most cereals, fats, sugars and legumes, while for high school levels animal foods and processed meats are the ones most frequently acquired. Conclusion: the socioeconomic level has a great weight in the acquisition and variety of foods, although this does not mean that foods obtained are the healthiest. Therefore, public policies are urgently required in favor of nutritional education at all school levels, which promote the purchase of healthy foods and compete with commercial advertising strategies.

This research aims to determine the contribution of private schools to socioeconomic school segregation in Peru and its departments. A microdata mining is carried out of the National Student Assessment for the 2nd year of Secondary School, in such a way that it works with 631 013 Secondary School students, distributed in 17 310 educational services in the 25 departments. A greater segregation was found in the group of students with fewer resources, in terms of private school; while for those with greater resources, segregation is greater in public schools, although this segregation is considerably less. In both groups there are important differences between departments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
