Facing the continuous improvement of war complexity under the trend of system-of-systems confrontation, this paper introduces MBSE to the modeling design of complex system-of-systems combat. Adopting Unified Architecture Framework, a modeling method based on scenes is proposed by sorting out the modeling needs and internal mechanisms of system operations. Taking the task that searching and attacking multiple target as an example, various kinds of view is constructed including strategic, operating, resources and services. Partial body weight support systems have proven to be a vital tool in performing physical therapy for patients with lower limb disabilities to improve gait. Developing this type of equipment requires rigorous design process that obtains a robust system, allowing physiotherapy exercises to be performed safely and efficiently. With this in mind, a "Model-Based Systems Engineering" design process using SysML improves communication between different areas, thereby increasing the synergy of interdisciplinary workgroups and positively impacting the development process of cyber-physical systems. The proposed development process presents a work sequence that defines a clear path in the design process, allowing traceability in the development phase. This also ensures the observability of elements related to a part that has suffered a failure. This methodology reduces the integration complexity between subsystems that compose the partial body weight support system because is possible to have a hierarchical and functional system vision at each design stage. The standard allowed requirements to be established graphically, making it possible to observe their system dependencies and who satisfied them. Systems Engineering (SE) may be one of the fastest‐evolving engineering disciplines today. With each technological innovation, the practice of systems engineering is challenged to adapt. Two such practices that have been appearing in university curricula are Model‐Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Architectural Patterns. The combination of MBSE and patterns has proven to be a powerful construct. This paper looks at the use of a space‐based patterns library (language) in a graduate‐level system engineering curriculum to teach MBSE. The International Council On Systems Engineering (INCOSE) "Systems Engineering Vision 2035" defines, that by 2035, the systems engineering practices will be based on a set of theoretical foundations and other general principles that are continuously taught as part of a systems engineering curriculum. This paper provides an approach and a solution to the needs of academic coursework for teaching model‐based systems engineering. The method presented in this paper details the usage of the pattern library concept developed for NASA and its usage by the systems engineering graduate students that eases the development of new space‐based systems architectures. Traditional text-based system engineering, which has been used in the design and application of passive residual heat removal system (PRHRS) for lead-cooled fast reactors, is prone to several problems such as low development efficiency, long iteration cycles, and model ambiguity. This study aims to effectively address the above-mentioned problems by adopting a model-based system engineering (MBSE) method, which has been preliminarily applied to meet the design requirements of a PRHRS. The design process has been implemented based on the preliminary design of the system architecture and consists of three stages: top-level requirement analysis, functional requirements analysis, and design requirements synthesis. The results of the top-level requirements analysis and the corresponding use case diagram can determine the requirements, top-level use cases, and scenario flow of the system. During the functional requirements analysis, the sequence, activity, and state machine diagrams are used to develop the system function model and provide early confirmation. By comparing these sequence diagrams, the requirements for omissions and inconsistencies can be effectively checked. In the design requirements synthesis stage, the Analytic Hierarchy Process is used to conduct preliminary trade-off calculations on the system architecture, after which a white box model is established during the system architecture design. Through these two steps, the analysis and design of the system architecture are ultimately achieved. The resulting system architecture ensures the consistency of the design requirements. Ultimately, a functional hazard analysis was conducted for a specific incident to validate case requirements and further refine the system architecture. Future research can further reduce the design risk, improve the design efficiency, and provide a practical reference for the design and optimization of PRHRS in digital lead-cooled fast reactors.

With the refinement of civil aircraft technology and the enhancement of product complexity, civil aircraft design has changed from traditional text-based system engineering to model-based system engineering, the expression of the system has also transformed from text-centered to model-centered. To further improve the model quality and correctness of aircraft system modeling, this paper explores the applicability of model-driven and verification-oriented system engineering methods in the field of civil aircraft design, and establishes the system engineering practice framework of civil aircraft design, which can ensure the rapid design and efficient delivery of civil aircraft. Firstly, starting from the Harmony SE modeling method, the workflow and modeling ideas of system are introduced; then the noticeable problems in the practice of civil aircraft system engineering are analyzed, and the system engineering practice of civil aircraft design is established with the support of the applicability of the Harmony SE method; finally, the fuel tank pressurization component is taken as the research object of the practice system in component-level. The results show that the system engineering practice framework of civil aircraft design and method proposed in this paper can correctly and reasonably allocate design requirements and establish a complete system model, which is helpful to improve the efficiency and accuracy of civil aircraft design at this stage.

The aviation system has experienced an increasing demand over the last decade since it is considered one of the optimal means of transportation. As a result of this increasing demand, aviation organizations have been forced to focus on passenger safety by keeping aircraft airworthy at all times and by investing in the maintenance sector. Recent literature shows that the maintenance sector is still using outdated technology to maintain documentation of an aircraft's maintenance system. This article proposes the use of model-based system engineering (MBSE) as an approach to document aircraft maintenance systems. Systems modeling language (SysML) provides the maintenance system with a more systematic application that would automatically update maintenance records and provide stakeholders with more precise documentation. SysML is expressed through the use of structural and behavioral diagrams for the EA-6B aircraft. This article also provides a look into the use of SysML in the modeling of complex system architecture and the interaction between various systems. The integration of reliability studies and SysML is showcased through a case study. A failure mode and effect analysis is performed to show the usability of SysML in conducting reliability analysis. The conceptual design phase is a crucial phase for the system architects to evaluate physical architecture concepts. Our research area deals with the model-based system engineering collaborative approach named spatial architecture based on multiphysics and organization of systems for the three-dimensional architecture evaluation of concepts under electromagnetic (EM) constraints. This article focuses on a preliminary required task: the development of a SysML extension called the electromagnetic interactions layout extension (EMILE) in order to support the collaboration between the system architects and the disciplinary EM experts by integrating the EM modeling based on the geometry to formalize EM constraints in the system model. This extension includes the EM requirements definition, the EM coupling modes description, and the specification of the simulation configuration, thanks to a developed customized human–machine interaction. Modern complex systems include products and services that comprise many interconnected pieces of integrated hardware and software, which are expected to serve humans interacting with them. As technology advances, expectations of a smooth, flawless system operation grow. Model-based systems engineering, an approach based on conceptual models, copes with this challenge. Models help construct formal system representations, visualize them, understand the design, simulate the system, and discover design flaws early on. Modeling tools can benefit tremendously from querying capabilities that enable gaining deep insights into system aspects that direct model observations do not reveal. Querying mechanisms can unveil and explain cause-and-effect phenomena, identify central components, and estimate impacts or risks associated with changes. Being connected networks of system elements, models can be effectively represented as graphs, to which queries are applied. Capitalizing on established graph-theoretic algorithms to solve a large variety of problems can elevate the modeling experience to new levels. To utilize this rich set of capabilities, one must convert the model into a graph and store it in a graph database with no significant loss of information. Applying the appropriate algorithms and translating the query response back to the original intelligible and meaningful diagrammatic and textual model representation is most valuable. We present and demonstrate a querying approach of converting Object-Process Methodology (OPM) ISO 19450 models into graphs, storing them in a Neo4J graph database, and performing queries that answer complex questions on various system aspects, providing key insights into the modeled system or phenomenon and helping to improve the system design. In present study, a history analysis and review of last 30 years for U.S. naval ship concept design development trend is proposed. Based on the development of naval ship concept design model history, the three features of development process are further summarized. The first is that model-based system engineering (MBSE) becomes the basic of naval ship concept design, while the second one is that the multi-discipline crossing and combination becomes a general innovation model. And the third one is that systematization oriented naval system integration is the developing goal. Some detailed examples are presented to illustrate these three characteristics. Finally, the technology difficulties in naval ship concept design are also presented.

This paper discusses how gaps in a model-based system engineering (MBSE) workflow can be bridged through the use of special model transformation tools. The goal is to create an integrated workflow tool chain to facilitate integration of various subsystems and verification of the overall system performance to meet a set of desired system requirements. This paper describes an implementation in a model-based representation that encompasses real system hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) components to verify the effectiveness and capability of the development platform. Discussion is provided on the developed model transformation processes that make this possible and is explained through the application of our approach to the development of subsystems for a vehicle system. The key contributions of research include: 1) identification of a suitable model-based systems design methodology and toolset (based on IBM Rhapsody/Mathworks Simulink combination) to include HIL for system verification; 2) design and development of model transformation tools to facilitate bidirectional transformation of an IBM Rhapsody model to a Simulink model; and 3) successful mapping between platform independent models and platform-specific models involving HIL.
