COVID-19 pandemic ,BROADCASTING studios ,NEWSROOMS ,POLITICAL participation ,ECONOMIC activity - Abstract
The pandemic has brought great surprise by transforming many dimensions of our lives, but it has undoubtedly also found the entire media industry unprepared. It has led to the paralysis of every political and economic activity, as well as of media systems, not only in Albania but did not spare the information corporations all over the world. The immediate challenges faced by the media, particularly the traditional ones, were the collapse of information, job losses, decline in advertising, reduction of staff and budgets, biased information, and decreased access to resources. In this article, we aim to prepare a qualitative analysis, of how Covid-19 has re-dimensioned the editorial staff of information television in terms of organization and operation of daily basis of the journalist's work. In the following, we have taken into consideration our study of three newsrooms of news television, such as: Syri Tv, Euronews, and News 24. The methodology is based on qualitative interviews of the three relevant chief editors of the aforementioned media, such as: Bledian Koka, Anta Muçaku, and Anila Jole. The survey of 23 journalists working in these newsrooms also provides quantitative data, concluding that today's editorships bring many "innovations" and organizational "changes", that had not previously been embraced by classic TV editors, before the COVID-19. The technological evolution of the newspaper industry has revolutionized journalism. Now the telephone has overcome the spatial barrier and information can be accessed anywhere and at any time, edited and created, and consume audio or video in any of its modalities. The latest surveys indicate that more than 90% of users connect via telephone to consume journalistic information. The design, edition and writing of the information undergoes a significant change: the concept of the traditional journalistic genre for new narratives that force the professional to acquire new skills. Due to the visual turn in journalism and the emergence of mobile journalism, many newspaper journalists have had to change the way they work and learn to use new tools. To face these changes, traditional news organizations apply different strategies to increase staff competencies in using new production tools and creating innovative content in new formats. In this paper, we investigate how a specific training arrangement was experienced by a group of 40 print editors and journalists in a German regional publishing house. The journalists were introduced to audio-visual storytelling and reporting with smartphones in a 2-week training course. The training arrangements were studied using participant observation and in-depth interviews, followed by a thematic analysis of the data. The study indicates that for print journalists and editors, the transition from the print to the mojo mindset depends on three dimensions: (i) mastering mojo skills, (ii) adopting visual thinking and (iii) integrating ethical and legal awareness. - Abstract
Its use arises from the mobile applications that have the headers in Google Play and AppStore, the two great "markets" of Western applications. These applications, of native programming, allow the sending of short headlines to the users of mobile devices (Smartphones and digital tablets), on the desktop screen of their mobile terminal, if the user has downloaded the application of the medium and has given consent. This study analyzes, over a period that covers more than three weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic, the typologies and themes of the headlines sent related to this dramatic situation, their topic, and the way in which the newsrooms approached the information sent to readers through this state-of-the-art communication channel. The results determine certain coincident submission biases in the ten applications analyzed and, in turn, divergences in the editorial approaches of the different media. Given the few studies of this nature carried out, it is considered necessary to observe the criteria used to inform readers about these shipments that, as a teletype (short and accurate headline, with limited characters), instantly informs users., Depto. de Periodismo y Nuevos Medios, Fac. de Ciencias de la Información, TRUE, pub

This study aimed to understand the impact of ethical codes on Saudi journalists’ perceptions toward mobile journalism (MOJO). Three major ethical dimensions were examined, including seeking truth, minimizing harm, and being accountable in news coverage. A survey link created with SurveyMonkey was transmitted via social media avenues, such as Twitter and WhatsApp, where Saudi journalists can complete the questionnaire and then share the link with other Saudi journalists. A total of 124 Saudi journalists were recruited by this snowball sampling approach, while the Codes of Ethics of Society of Professional Journalists was adapted as major measurements for three ethical dimensions, including seeking truth, minimizing harm, and being accountable. Results found that all three ethical dimensions of professional journalists generated significant influences on Saudi journalists’ perceptions toward MOJO. Specifically, minimizing harm was found as the most powerful factor that affected Saudi journalists’ perceptions toward MOJO, followed by being accountable and seeking truth, indicating that Saudi journalists who were more likely to seek truth, minimize harm, and be accountable would exhibit more positive perceptions toward MOJO. Although using smartphone as a journalistic tool was a key factor toward Saudi journalists’ MOJO perceptions, it was not as powerful as three ethical dimensions that affected their MOJO perceptions.

POLITICAL participation , *SOCIAL media , *COVID-19 pandemic , *DIGITAL media , *DIGITAL technology , *SOFTWARE engineers , *MOBILE operating systems , *SOCIAL influence - Abstract
Digital media platforms are used to make social contacts, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Journalism also adopts mobile and social platforms into news production and distribution. The usage of digital media platforms in journalistic practices has shown some interlinkage with political participation. Against these backdrops, there is a need for a theoretical framework to analyze the interlinkage and the relevant influence on social activities. This article uses a conceptual approach and theorizes platformization to explicate the rationale behind the interaction between digital platforms, mobile journalism, and political participation. Platformization in this study inspects media as mediated and dynamic platform that values interactivity and data. We also argue that the thesis of platformization derives from mediatization theory, and consists of platform logic and platform architecture. Platform logic is represented by platform functionality, platform automation, mobile mediality, and platform-based sociality. Platformization is structured by the platform architecture in the communication activities. Platform architecture has two senses. Firstly, it has the sense of internal structure, i.e., the engineering structure of software and hardware. Secondly, it contains the sense of external structure, i.e., the platform's structural position in the platform ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT – This article was developed within the scope of the Erasmus+ PAgES project, and it aims to investigate mobile journalism (mojo) as a new digital journalism technique that is based upon three characteristics: agility, flexibility, and accessibility. The proposed hypotheses are that mobile journalists can produce news content quickly and also include a greater variety of formats. In addition, access to remote locations and characters for interviews has been facilitated. Exploratory research tested these hypotheses using a mixed-method approach: an online survey (53 responses), to assess the degree of agreement/disagreement of the mobile journalists themselves regarding the hypotheses; and four interviews with experts to understand their perceptions of this new approach to journalism. The result of the research was favorable to the hypotheses and confirmed the process of individualization in journalism. It also ratified mojo as a journalistic technique suited to the demands of the 21st-century media industry. This article discusses how Shosana Zuboff’s critical theory of surveillance capitalism may help to understand and underpin responsible practice and innovation in mobile journalism. Zuboff conceptualizes surveillance capitalism as a new economic logic made possible by ICT and its architecture for extracting and trading data products of user behavior and preferences. Surveillance is, through these new technologies, built into the fabric of our economic system and, according to Zuboff, appears as deeply anti-democratic and a threat to human sovereignty, dignity, and autonomy. In Europe, the framework of responsible research and innovation is promoted as an approach and a meta-concept that should inform practice and policy for research and innovation to align with societal values and democratic principles. Within this approach, ICT is framed as a risk technology. As innovation in mobile journalism is inextricably tied to the technologies and infrastructure of smartphones and social media platforms, the apparent question would be how we can envision responsible innovation in this area. Zuboff provides a critical perspective to study how this architecture of surveillance impedes the practice of mobile journalism. While the wide adoption of smartphones as a key tool for both producing and consuming news has great potential for innovation, it can also feed behavioral data into the supply chain of surveillance capitalism. We discuss how potentially harmful implications can be met on an individual and organizational level to contribute to a more responsible adoption of mobile technologies in journalism.

Mobile devices have acquired an increasingly prominent role within the media arena. The consolidation of smartphones as the preferred platforms to access digital journalistic information has led to a number of changes in how the news is produced, distributed and eventually consumed. This article describes an evolving model of journalistic content for mobile devices to contribute to the theory of mobile media already set in motion by other peer researchers. Framed within the media ecology, the actor-network theory and the study of the society-technology relationship, we start with a bibliographic review to analyse innovations in the mobile digital ecosystem that are related to semantics (new formats and content genres) and social aspects (new forms of appropriation of media and technologies) whilst also identifying the main actors currently operating in this ecosystem. This approach makes it possible to reconstruct the emergent process that affected mobile technologies, devices, uses, platforms, products and services on a multidimensional timeline. A new stage in mobile journalism was defined and characterized from 2015 onwards. The consolidation phase for journalistic content on mobile devices is defined by the rise of social networks and micro-formats, personalization, video, audio, newsletters and news alerts, wearables, smart speakers and automation. At this stage, the production of informative content specifically designed to be distributed through various mobile devices was normalized, which led to the adaptation of old formats and the appearance of new ones. This paper presents a theoretical reframing of journalism as a fundamentally mobile practice and outlines a research agenda for studying the politics of mobility in journalism that is centered on the everyday work of journalists. Our reframing draws on geographer Tim Cresswell's work on the six components of a politics of mobility, which are motive force, speed, rhythm, route, experience, and friction (Cresswell, T. 2010. "Towards a Politics of Mobility." Environment and Planning D: Society and Space 28 (1): 17–31). Cresswell poses six key questions about mobility, and rephrasing them to to fit journalists, we get why do journalists move?; how fast do journalists move?; according to what rhythm do journalists move?; what route(s) do journalists take?; how do journalists feel when they move?; and what stops/impedes the movement of journalists? These questions entail a research framework concerned with the different conditions of movement for different bodies, thus drawing attention to previously under-studied areas of journalism studies. The advent of new technologies has resulted in the rise of mobile journalism around the globe. Mobile devices have reformed the newsroom environments by introducing new means to connect with the audience and to communicate with other journalists within the same place. Many traditional media organizations already produce news content for mobile web-sites and apps in proportion to cross-media strategies, reflecting structural changes in the journalism industry and transformation in the process of news production in many countries and although coming from different cultural traditions and geographical locations, Pakistan and Ghana are no exceptions. However, there are concerns about the potential role of mobile journalism in fostering the culture of fake news in both countries. Thus, using the media convergence and social responsibility theories, this study aims to analyse how mobile journalism is altering the news production process and fostering the trend of fake news in Pakistan and Ghana. To accomplish this aim, this study uses the qualitative methods of document review and in-depth interviews and offers a thematic analysis of the qualitative data.

Mobility and location-awareness are pervasive and foundational elements of contemporary communication systems, and a descriptive term to synthesize them, “locative media”, has gained widespread use throughout mobile media and communication research. That label of “locative media”, though, usually gets defined ad hoc and used in many different ways to express a variety of related ideas. Locative features of digital media increasingly have changed from visible location-driven aspects of user interfaces, such as check-in features and location badges, toward more inconspicuous ways of relating to location through automated backend processes. In turn, locative features—whether in journalism or other formats and content types—are now increasingly algorithmic and hidden “under the hood”, so to speak. Part of the problem with existing classifications or typologies in this field is that they do not take into account this practical shift and the rapid development of locative media in many new directions, intertwining ubiquitous digital integration with heterogeneous content distinctions and divergences. Existing definitions and typologies tend to be based on dated practices of use and initial versions of applications that have changed significantly since inception. To illustrate, this article identifies three emerging areas within digital journalism and mobile media practice that call for further research into the locative dimensions of journalism: the situational turn in news consumption research, platform-specific vis-a-vis platform-agnostic mobile news production, and personalised news.

Mobile journalism is a fast-growing area of journalistic innovation that requires new skills and work practices. Thus, a major challenge for journalists is learning not only how to keep up with new gadgets but how to advance and develop a mojo mindset to pursue their interests and solidify future work options. This paper investigates a globally pioneering network of mojo journalism, the Mojo Community, that consists of journalists and practitioners dedicated to creating multimedia content using mobile technologies. The study is based on empirical data from interviews with and the observation of the participants of the community over a two-year period. The analysis draws on Wenger's concept of "communities of practice" to explore the domain, structure, and role of this communal formation for innovation and change in journalistic practices. The community's core group is comprised of journalists mainly affiliated with legacy broadcast organizations and with a particular interest in and extensive knowledge of mobile technologies. The participants perceive their engagement with the community as a way of meeting the challenges of organizational reluctance to change, fast-evolving technological advancements, and uncertain job prospects. This article discusses how Shosana Zuboff's critical theory of surveillance capitalism may help to understand and underpin responsible practice and innovation in mobile journalism. 42. Epistemology of mobile journalism. A review.

- Abstract
The fast and global way which has characterized the presence of mobile phones in society has sparked the interest of several sectors of activity, including journalism. From the early stages of production to distribution, and then through the characteristics of content and consumption patterns, numerous changes have been introduced by these mobile devices in an activity that has been undergoing one of the most uncertain moments in its long history. This uncertainty has stemmed from the decrease in income which was caused by the emergence of new competitors, such as the online press and social networks. This bibliographic review aims at identifying the changes caused by smartphones in the production distribution and consumption of news, analyzing its effect on the epistemology of journalism. We attempt to ascertain if the increasing influence of mobile technologies in the journalistic activity has changed its nature, improving the production of knowledge. Upon closer reading of the bibliography, it can be concluded that the versatility of mobile devices has facilitated a set of new possibilities not only for journalists, namely more autonomy and a reduction in the time spent between the event and the publication, but also for consumers, who can do a mobile and personalized consumption on their screens. Due to its ability to continuously adapt to the rhythm of contemporary society, mobile journalism has become more universal and has been confirmed as a form of knowledge insofar as it responds more effectively to consumers' expectations, in particular young people's, who are moving away from journalism and thus prevent the generational renewal of readers, something which is fundamental for the media business model. SINGLE-lens reflex cameras ,SMARTPHONES ,PHOTOGRAPHY ,DIGITAL cameras ,JOURNALISM ,PHOTOJOURNALISM ,SOCIAL networks - Abstract
Every day, we carry in our pockets a device that is currently no longer designed just for telephoning or sending messages, but contains a variety of other functions. This has also helped modern journalism – smartphones are for journalists what a pen and paper once were. They can use it to take notes, as well as record respondents' statements, shoot pictures or stream live through a social network. News can thus get to the viewers or listeners almost immediately, by simple sharing. Current smartphones have integrated cameras, which are approaching the resolution of a professional single-lens reflex camera. What place do smartphones have in journalism? Doesn’t the fact that they can technically never reach single-lens cameras due to absence of a chip disqualify them? And aren’t the boundaries between a professional and amateur photographer becoming blurred? In the following article, we will try to find answers to these questions and demonstrate the findings on examples of foreign and local photojournalists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

More and more journalistic content for smartphones is no longer based on other vehicles of the company, analogic or digital, and become appropriate for the new mobile environment. The card-based news design presents itself as a good solution for creating native mobile interfaces. In this work we discuss the major contributions of the “card” type interfaces for news applications for smartphones and describe an evaluation model for this type of content in order to offer a tool for systematizing and classifying researches in the areas of journalism, design, among others.

The production and distribution of news is changing. At the same time, the relationship between journalism and artificial intelligence systems is becoming stronger. Within this context, conversational bots have appeared, which are software applications that distribute personalised content (Al Johri et al., 2016) through social networks, online instant messaging apps, and mobile devices. This research presents a case study on the conversational political news bot known as Politibot, which is a pioneering, successful Spanish project that emerged during the 2016 election campaign. The study analyses users' perceptions of the bot as a news and conversational tool based on their experience of use. An experimental methodology has been used in combination with other qualitative and quantitative research techniques (documentary analysis, direct observation, registration forms, as well as pre-test and post-test by means of questionnaires). The results show widespread acceptance in terms of reliability, comprehension, and the format regarding the information received from the bot, as well as its immediacy and customisation. However, the possibility of interacting with bots is still limited, which is also true of the case under study herein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapid increase in use of smartphones has increased the scope of work or tasks we can do through this small handheld device. So much so that it has come to the point that journalism as a profession is now seen to be encapsulating in this rectangular electronic device. The paper makes an attempt to bring together the literature that is available on mobile journalism and critically examine the content for the prediction of mobile journalism in coming times. It takes into account the current pandemic conditions and its affect per se. The paper, to the best of my knowledge, is by far the first to give an encompassing view on the evolution, implementation, adaptation and futuristic aspects of mobile journalism along with its scenario in current Covid times. VIRTUAL reality , *USER experience , *AVATARS (Virtual reality) , *CONTENT analysis , *JOURNALISM , *DIGITAL storytelling , *ELECTRONIC newspapers - Abstract
This paper, which is part of the field of immersive journalism studies, compares the narrative of contents published in El País VR, Folha 360°, Estadão RV and NYT VR, specific applications for 360-degree productions of the newspapers El País (Spain), Folha de S. Paulo and Estado de S. Paulo (Brazil) and New York Times (United States). In addition to identify the main characteristics of 51 publications, the main of this study is to verify the level of immersion these contents provide to the users. Due to this, a content analysis has been carried out, based on methodological contributions by authors from different countries. The final result points out that the spatial immersion level is much higher than the sensory level in most of the sample, which leads to a relative virtual reality experience for the user. Hence, with the exception of the content of NYT VR, the user does not usually feel involved psychologically about to immerse totally in the story and forget reality. Therefore, it is necessary to encourage the creation of more innovative initiatives with digital avatar narratives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
