WOMEN'S clothing , *FASHION , *CULTURAL landscapes , *CLOTHING & dress , *ORAL history - Abstract
The article, "Migration and Fashion: Lithuanian Emigrant Women and Their Daughters in France, 1940s-1970s," is part of a larger research project based on the art dissertation titled "Secrets of the (Un)Collected Collection: Reflection, Interpretation, and Contexts of Daily Life in the Clothing of Lithuanian Women from the 1940s to the 1970s." It serves as a comparative study alongside narratives of Lithuanian women's clothing from the same period described in the thesis. The article offers insights into the lives and everyday clothing of six Lithuanian women who resided in France during the mid-20th century: Ugnė Karvelis (1935-2002), Živilė Bačkis (1938-2022), Elena Jankauskienė (1887-1979), Angela Masiulienė (1912-1974), Elena Turauskienė (1906-1986), and Caroline Nendrė Paliulis (born 1949). Its aim is to explore the evolution and cultural significance of the clothing of Lithuanian women who lived in France in from the 1940s to 1970s in the context of shifting political, economic, and cultural landscapes, to present the biographies of the above-mentioned women, as well as to compare the cultural situation of clothing in Lithuania and Paris in the given period. Drawing upon social culture theory, which posits that clothing reflects historical realities and social contexts, moral convictions and aesthetic tastes, the research compares the experiences and attire of six women from different generations with those of Lithuanian women residing in their homeland during the same period, as well as with the broader culture of clothing. The study is rooted in oral history and extends beyond the 1940s-1970s timeframe. The article is structured chronologically, with each section dedicated to one of the featured individuals, starting with the eldest, Elena Jankauskienė, and concluding with the youngest, Caroline Nendrė Paliulis. Focusing on a small immigrant community in contemporary England, Nadeem Aslam's Maps for Lost Lovers (2004) narrates the pain and loneliness of cultural isolation and (self-)ghettoization in a cosmopolitanised reality. In that context, Aslam explores nostalgia as a common aspect of the experience of migration, supplying the minutest details of a mingled sense of loss and longing, which translates into physical pain and traps the community in a system of values and expectations that belong in another world. Relying on twenty-first-century cosmopolitan theory and studies of the body, both physical and social, this article wishes to analyse the ailing body as a consequence of falling prey to nostalgia. By examining both the suffering maternal body and body social, it intends to demonstrate how nostalgia can impede adaptation and stand in the way of cosmopolitanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immigrants‘ encounters with the new legal system of the welcoming country might vary from challenging to easy process. The newcomers’ path of interaction in the field of welcoming countries‘ legalities is related to the legal knowledge and variety of assumptions about the legal world and how it is embedded in the social reality of a welcoming country. There are many factors, that are involved and shape this complexity but one of them is highly meaningful - the role of intermediaries. Therefore, this research focuses on identifying and discussing the different statuses and roles of the intermediaries as they participate in the process of immigrant‘s interaction with the legalities of the welcoming country. These assumptions are based on the 53 qualitative interviews of foreign third-country residents in Lithuania. The results of the analysis reveal the main roles of the intermediaries while immigrants interact with the new legal system of the welcoming country. This research indicates that intermediaries actively or passively participate in the processes of migrants’ gaining legal knowledge, influence their legal behaviour and become a part of migrants‘ legal interactions. Intermediaries are also seen in the variance of official statuses, visibly gaining different roles in legal relationships which results in different outcomes. Therefore, this research draws attention to the need for more profound attention to the immigrants’ legal relationship and deduces practical implications for it as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Until March 2022, the Republic of Latvia belonged to the countries with rather low migration. Because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the situation changed unexpectedly. There was a Ukrainian minority in Latvia (42,300 people or 3.5% of the total population). During the first months of the war, appr. 10,000 refugees, mostly women and children, arrived in Latvia, and numbers may exceed 30,000 at present. A special law has already been adopted, including language and education rights articles. The Ukrainian language has become a more visible participant in the Latvian language market and will probably keep these positions after the Ukrainian victory. At the same time, the Latvian state has to ensure the successful integration of newcomers into Latvian society against the background of Latvian language skills. This aspect may be challenging because a part of Ukrainian refugees use Russian as their family language or have Russian language skills. Ukrainian nationals whose family language is Russian belong to the same linguistic community as members of the Russian minority in Latvia, but their political and ideological views can be completely different, raising the issue of linguistic and national identity. Latvia still has not overcome the consequences of Russification during the Soviet period, and the increase of Russian language use in public space is not in line with the goals of the Latvian language policy. EMPATHY , *GRAPHIC novels , *LITERARY form , *NARRATION , *EMOTIONS , *PEAFOWL - Abstract
As a "trans" form of literature, according to Knowles, Peacock and Earle, the graphic novel offers a suitable medium for narrating transitional experiences. Shaun Tan's The Arrival (2006) demonstrates this by telling a universal yet diverse story of migration and trauma, employing a dreamlike combination of realism and fantasy, and the immediacy of visual expression to represent precarious situations, states and emotions which are almost unrepresentable. A complex dialogue among images and pages, and the slow movement from panel to panel enable the reader to gradually understand the shifts inherent in migrant and traumatic experiences. As words would monopolise attention in Tan's view and situate the narrative in a particular language, a conspicuous lack of words allows the narrative to communicate across cultures, simultaneously signalling the difficulty of verbally articulating trauma. Relying on studies of the graphic novel and trauma, this paper explores Tan's narrative strategies for conveying trauma, and portraying migration as a shared and timeless experience. At the same time, the paper examines Tan's promotion of cross-cultural and cross-species empathy and solidarity, thus avoiding what Stef Craps sees as one of the pitfalls of trauma theory. SOCIAL integration , *ACADEMIC libraries , *PUBLIC libraries , *INFORMATION needs , *LIBRARY technical services , *TOLERATION , *LITERATURE reviews , *FAMILY services - Abstract
Aim. This paper presents the topic of migration and the role that libraries play in the process of migrants' adaptation and integration. The purpose of the paper, based on a literature review, is to present insights into library services in relation to the needs of migrants, the migrants' perception of libraries and obstacles to using libraries. Approach/methodology/design. The methodological approach in the paper is based on the review and analysis of literature published in the field of information sciences on the topic of libraries and information needs of migrants. The identified knowledge is synthesized at the end of the work in the form of recommendations to libraries. Results. The paper identified and described information needs of migrants and the most commonly used sources of information, the services libraries offer to migrants through their programmes, collections and space, and the barriers migrants face when using libraries. The role of libraries in the development of a multicultural society and the importance of reading in building and maintaining their identity were also analysed. Most of the topics presented are related to services and needs in relation to the country of immigration. There is a gap in the existing literature on the information needs and library services of emigrants in relation to the homeland. Limitations. Terminologically, the paper uses the term migrants as a general concept and considers issues at a more general level concerning various groups of migrants. Although most services are viewed in the context of public libraries, the results are also applicable to other types of libraries for which migrants are a potential user group, such as academic libraries. Originality/value. The paper provides an overview of fundamental insights into library services for migrants and can benefit libraries in developing services for migrants, as well as other stakeholders for whom information needs, integration, identity preservation and wellbeing of migrants are important. The paper also encourages awareness of the indispensable role that access to information plays in fostering social inclusion and the role of libraries in the development of tolerance and democratic society. STOMACH cancer , *POLYMERASE chain reaction , *LYMPHATIC metastasis , *BINDING sites , *ANTINEOPLASTIC agents , *CELL migration - Abstract
Background: To explore the anti-cancer role of GABPA in the progression of gastric cancer (GC), and the underlying mechanism. Methods: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was conducted to detect the expression pattern of GABPA in 45 pairs of GC and non-tumoral tissues. The relationship between GABPA expression and clinic pathological indicators of GC patients was analyzed. In AGS and SGC-7901 cells overexpressing GABPA, their migratory ability was determined by trans well and wound healing assay. The interaction between GABPA and its downstream target GPX1 was explored by dual-luciferase reporter assay, and their synergistical regulation on GC cell migration was finally elucidated. Results: GABPA was downregulated in GC tissues in comparison to normal ones. Low level of GABPA predicted high incidences of lymphatic and distant metastasis in GC. Overexpression of GABPA blocked AGS and SGC-7901 cells to migrate. GABPA could target GPX1 via the predicted binding site. GPX1 was upregulated in clinical samples of GC, and negatively correlated to GABPA level. The anticancer effect of GABPA on GC relied on the involvement of GPX1. Conclusions: GABPA is downregulated in GC samples, which can be utilized to predict GC metastasis. Serving as a tumor suppressor, GABPA blocks GC cells to migrate by targeting GPX1. Publikācija veltīta krievu-amerikāņu sociologam Pitirimam Sorokinam (Питирим Александрович Сорокин, 1889–1968). Raksta autore pievēršas zinātnieka biogrāfijai, analizējot gan viņa dzīves laiku, kas saistīts ar Krieviju, gan viņa darbības t. s. Amerikas periodu.

Relations between Brussels and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) worsened during and after the 2015 migration crisis. In order to see to what extent CEE citizens contributed to and/or resonated with this new state of affairs, this paper investigates public opinion before the migration crisis in seven CEE EU Member States. We inquire whether the main issues of the rift (CEE political elites’ opposition to following EU decisions and immigration and their emphasis on sovereignism, nationalism, Christian Europe and historical traumas) could also be traced to public stances towards these issues before the migration crisis. We used the ISSP National Identity module conducted in 2013 and 2014 in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia and Slovenia. The results show that opposition to EU supranationalism was not linked to ethnic nationalism and religious identity (except in Hungary). Contrary to political elites, who emphasised the cultural threat posed by migration, public opinion was more concerned with the economic threat. Moreover, the perception of cultural threat was not linked to opposing EU supranationalism in any of the countries. However, particularly support for sovereignism (in almost all the countries), but also pride in national history (in some countries) correlated negatively with support for EU supranationalism. The results suggest that political elites can bypass public opinion to construct an anti-EU climate, however not out of thin air. The conditions for such a process were present in Hungary with its emerging transnational cleavage, which shows the importance of cleavages in studying Euroscepticism.

The aim of this work is to analyse deposit patterns and their effect on urban and agricultural areas in Ain Salah region in southern Algeria. A supervised classification of Landsat images over a 13-year period (2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017) was applied to create land cover maps which were used for a spatiotemporal monitoring of barchan migration by dune feature changes. The results show that sand dunes covered area increased between 2005 and 2017 with direction movements from northeast to southwest and represents the potential of using time series imagery for a better understanding of dune migration and sand encroachment.

STo study the intensity of migration of stable strontium (Sr) from the light-textured Albic Retisol with different levels of humus content, a column experiment was carried out. As the Sr-containing lime, conversion chalk (CC) as a by-product of nitrogen fertilizer production containing 90% CaCO3 and 1.5% Sr was used. The experiment included 8 washings, where the eluates of each leachate were analysed for the content of Sr leached from the lighttextured Albic Retisol from meadow and forest soils. In a native high-humus soil, complete removal of mobile Sr was achieved by the 3rd washing; in the low-humus soil, Sr leaching began only after the 3rd washing and did not end after the 8th washing. The total amount of Sr washed out from the low-humus soil exceeded that of Sr removed from the soil with a high-humus content by 1.3 times and amounted to 0.21 and 0.16 mg, respectively. Liming of the soil with the waste CC led to its increased leaching of Sr 6.1 mg from low-humus soil and 3.8 mg from highhumus soil. The share of CC-Sr leached from limed soils was 24.3% from high-humus soil and 39.2% from lowhumus soil of the amount applied with chalk. Empirical equations developed adequately explained the processes of elution of Sr from native and limed soils. Average rates of the Sr leaching under the simulated precipitation were: for the native low-humus soil -0.29 lg(mg) per year, for the calcareous low-humus soil -0.24 lg(mg) per year and for the calcareous high-humus soil -0.17 l lg(mg) per year. In the agricultural systems, where systematic and prolonged liming of soils with an ameliorant containing Sr, in order to prevent the ingress of excessive amounts of Sr into the human body, a systematic monitoring of the content of Sr in food chains is required. DOLOMITE , *SANDY loam soils , *FOREST soils , *LEACHING , *MAGNESIUM , *SOIL washing , *DISTILLED water - Abstract
The results of 8-variable column experiment on a strongly acidic sod-podzolic sandy loam reclaimed by the finely ground dolomite in a wide dose range are presented. The aim of the research was to measure and estimate leaching of magnesium (Mg) and its migration pattern. The dolomite powder at the different doses calculated by hydrolytic acidity (Hy) was applied at 225, 337.5, 450, 675, 900, 1350 and 1800 mg, that corresponded to 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 Hy, respectively. The migratory ability of Mg was studied in 12-times washing column experiment. Each washing was carried out by 400 ml distilled water, simulating the volume of annual precipitation percolating through the soil stratum yearly. The increase in the amount of leaked moisture contributed to the enhancement of the eluvial losses of Mg. The maximum loss of Mg due to migration was established in the filtrates of the first washing. As the dose of dolomite increased, the amount of the soil Mg migrating with the total amount of Mg decreased from 27% to 7.5%. Complete removal of water-soluble Mg from the soil was not achieved in any of the studied treatments. Applied empirical estimations correctly described the process of leaching of Mg during repeated washing of the soil. Based on the data on the amount of leached Mg from soil reclaimed by a wide range of dolomite doses, a clustering of the empirical equations was performed. It was shown that in the 1st stage of the experiment (from 1 to 4 washings) the rate of Mg leaching increased significantly with an increase in the dose of the dolomite. In the 2nd stage (4 to 12 washings) such a pattern was not established. Depending on the dolomite dose applied, the losses of Mg increased from 14.05 to 50.6 mg compared to 3.8 mg in the non-limed (control) treatment. The main finding is that finely ground dolomite in an amount exceeding a full dose calculated by 1 Hy applied to sod-podzolic forest soil resulted in unproductive losses of Mg, i.e., with increasing dolomite dose, the losses of Mg increased. Return features heavily in the narratives and lives of Romanian immigrants in London, as a key topic of debate rather than a mere end goal of their migration. By analysing their experiences of temporary return, this paper1 reveals the tensions and contradictions embedded in migrants’ transnational social networks. It applies a two-fold focus: first examining the importance of return for Romanians in London; then considering how experiences of temporary return shape migrants’ social networks. The paper is based on data from my scoping doctoral fieldwork, five weeks of participant observation and interviews with Romanians in northwest London. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article considers the Republic of Kazakhstan's internal intellectual migration within the scope of the Bolashak International Scholarship Program which aims to train highly-killed specialists at the best universities in the world. The analysis covers mechanisms of public investment in training of highly-qualified specialists, regulatory measures to promote employment opportunities nationally and the geographical scope of internal-intellectual migration of Bolashak graduates. A survey of Bolashak graduates assesses the country’s labour market capacity and detects factors affecting migration among Kazakh youth. The study showed that most graduates of the Bolashak program want to contribute to the development of the country, but they are not satisfied with the level of wages in Kazakhstan. Migratory moods were noted only among graduates aged 23-28 years, while older graduates aged 29 to 35 still preferred to stay at home. Moreover, among the first group of graduates, the priority was given to the standard of living in the country of destination rather than professional opportunities. Graduates from the second group were more interested in career prospects rather than in the standard of living in the country of destination. This research was funded by the Science Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Grant No. АР05136246). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL conditions of immigrants , *SOCIAL innovation , *CULTURAL pluralism , *CREATIVE ability , *SOCIAL history - Abstract
Migration has become a significant issue in many countries and it has been highly debated topic in economic and social policy areas. Only recently, the impact of migration on the culture, norms, values and development of creative society had begun to catch the attention of policymakers and researchers. Migrant contributions to the society are seen not only as significant component to economies and their labour markets, but also as an important factor in stimulating creativity and innovation. This paper analyses this inter-relatedness and presents empirically-based arguments in support of the position that a migration can be regarded as the main prerequisite for the creation of a knowledge economy and as providing the potential for development of creative and inclusive society. Medical history of the city of Rijeka is a rich treasure trove of events, celebrities and valuable innovations in the field of healthcare. The historical development of Rijeka was largely determined by her geopolitical position as a border town with a multicultural population, marked by strong conflicts of interest and numerous identity turmoil. The great exodus of the domicile population of Italian nationality after World War II has significantly changed the social picture of the city. Among many of such esuli (immigrants) were brothers Giovanni (b. 1932) and Abdon (b. 1933) Pamich, whose lives are reminiscent of the fate of many displaced people from Rijeka who were forced to live in exile after the war. After leaving their hometown during the formative years of their childhood, they had successful careers in Italy in the fields of medicine and healthcare. The older brother Giovanni became a successful surgeon and the younger Abdon a psychologist. Along with his positions as the head of general surgery at the Monfalcone and Gorizia Hospitals, Giovanni Pamich was teaching at the University of Trieste. Abdon Pamich collaborated with the best Italian tennis players in the field of sports psychology, and was a psychologist for the Italian handball team. They both practiced athletics, and Abdon Pamich won the silver medal in speed walking at the 1958 European Championships in Sweden and the gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In addition to emphasizing the achievements of the two brothers in the field of medicine, this paper also addresses the position of the migrant, which is highlighted in Robert Covaz’s book “Abdon Pamich, memorie di un marciatore (Rome, 2016), an exciting biography of an emigrant from Rijeka. The paper also explores the concept of thematizing the limits of differences and experiences of migration of Rijeka residents facing the existential issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EMIGRATION & immigration , *PHYSICIANS - Abstract
As the global health care workforce faces a shortage, several EU nations focus on employing foreign-trained physicians. So much so, that in some countries of the EU, the percentage of foreign-trained physicians has reached 30 % and the percentage of foreigntrained psychiatrists has risen to 40 %. After Croatia entered the EU, together with a significant number of other Croatian citizens, a great proportion of Croatian physicians emigrated. Currently, Croatia is among the three EU countries from which the most physicians emigrate. There are both economic and non-economic factors that are influence individuals' choice to emigrate. Benefits of emigration for Croatian physicians are high satisfaction with life standard, income, professional development, and better work conditions. However, there are also clear psychological costs involved, which hinder both the emigrants and their families, and make building of a social network and integration into society difficult. These are: moving away from family members, friends and a familiar environment, mastering another language, finding work opportunities for partners, adjusting to life in another country under discrimination by colleagues, patients and the general public. Countries of immigration face challenges with foreign-trained physicians because of their native linguistic and cultural background. Language proficiency training and national familiarization programs can improve integration of immigrant physicians and their families. In recognition that national skill shortages can cause disbalance on a global level, the WHO calls on high-income countries to strive for self-sufficiency, through educating, retaining, and sustaining enough physicians to staff their own health care systems. The aim of this work was to prepare poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)/montmorillonite (PHB/MMT) composites on the laboratory press with heating, and to determine the influence of different food simulants on the composites and the filler migration. Analysis of the food simulants after migration testing was conducted with UV/Vis spectroscopy. Due to the established hydrolysis of PHB under the influence of the food simulants, it was impossible to determine the migration of MMT from PHB/MMT composites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirmed the degradation of PHB. This research showed the potential of UV/Vis spectroscopy in dealing with the influence of food simulants on polymer composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
