Objective : The aim of this study is to characterize the patterns and trends in the editorial process and features of the first decade of Pharmacy Practice, with the final goal of initiating a benchmarking process to enhance the quality of the journal. Methods : Metadata of all of the articles published from 2006 issue #3 to 2016 issue #2 were extracted from PubMed and complemented by a manual data extraction process on the full-text articles. Citations of these articles were retrieved from Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, and Google Scholar on August 15, 2016. The references from all of the articles published by Pharmacy Practice in 2015 were also extracted. International collaboration was explored with a network analysis. Results : A total of 40 issues were published in this timespan, including 349 articles, 91.1% of which were original research articles. The number of citations received by these articles varies from 809, as reported by the WOS, to the 1162 reported by Scopus and the 2610 reported by Google Scholar. The journals cited by Pharmacy Practice are mainly pharmacy journals, including Pharm Pract (Granada), Int J Clin Pharm, Am J Health-Syst Pharm, Am J Pharm Educ, and Ann Pharmacother. Only 17.3% of the articles involved international collaboration. Delays in the editorial process increased in 2013, mainly due to an increase in acceptance delay (mean=138 days). Conclusion : Pharmacy Practice has improved its visibility and impact over the past decade, especially after 2014, when the journal became indexed in PubMed Central. The editorial process duration is one of the weaknesses that should be tackled. Further studies should investigate if the low international collaboration rate is common across other pharmacy journals.

Background: Inappropriate use of drugs is commonly observed in health care system throughout the world especially in developing countries. The consequences of irrational use of drugs are enormous for patients and communities. Proper interventions would have important financial and public health benefits. Several studies have been performed about rational use of drugs in Iran. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess scientific output on rational use of drugs in Iran using a bibliometric analysis of publications. Methods: A systematic search was conducted for finding all papers (English and Persian) using Pubmed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CINAHL, Proquest, International Pharmaceutical Abstract and Persian databases including SID, Iran Medex and MagIran. Retrieved articles were categorized by research topics and year of publication. Impact Factor of the journals, citation analysis of first authors, most cited topics and average citations per item were analyzed. Results: A total of 668 articles were retrieved from all search engines after excluding irrelevant, 466 articles were included in the review. Number of publications increased dramatically after 2001(more than 10 times). Evaluation of prescribing pattern (15%), self-medication (11.3%) and adverse drug reaction (9.1%) were among the most studied topics. From the total of 165 journals, 60 of them had Impact factors and 125 articles were published in these journals. Antimicrobial resistance and adverse drug reaction were the most cited topic. Conclusion: Publication of articles on rational use of drugs research in Iran has undergone an important increase during last decade. Further analysis of research outputs is necessary to achieve rational use of medicines goal.

Objective: To compare the quantity of manuscripts published in journals by departments of pharmacy practice at schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States for the years 2001-2003. Methods: We utilized the Web of Science bibliographic database to identify publication citations for the years 2001 to 2003 which were then evaluated in a number of different ways. Faculty were identified via American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy rosters for 2000-2001, 2001-2002, and 2002-2003 academic years. Results: Rankings were done based on the number of publications per institution and average number of publications per faculty member at an institution. Upon linear regression analysis, a relationship exists between an institution's faculty size and the total number of publications but not for tenure/nontenure-track faculty ratio. Rating highest in overall publication number did not guarantee high rankings in the average number of publications per faculty member at an institution assessment. Midwestern schools were responsible for more publications per institution than other regions. Many schools only generated minimal scholarship over this evaluative period. Conclusion: While many schools have pharmacy practice faculty that strongly contributed to the biomedical literature, other schools have not. Pharmacy practice faculty in the Midwest publish more journal manuscripts than faculty in other regions of the country. More pharmacy schools need to engage their faculty in scholarly endeavors by providing support and incentives. Objetivo: Comparar la cantidad de manuscritos publicados en revistas por departamentos de práctica farmacéutica (farmacia práctica) en las escuelas y facultades de farmacia en los Estados Unidos entre los años 2001-2003. Métodos: Utilizamos la base de datos bibliográfica de Web of Science para identificar las citas de publicaciones de los años 2001 a 2003 que fueron evaluadas de varias diferentes formas. Los académicos fueron identificados mediante los registros de la Asociación Americana de Facultades de Farmacia para los años académicos 2000-2001, 2001-2002, y 2002-2003. Resultados: Se realizaron ranking con el número de publicaciones por institución y la media de publicaciones por miembro académico de la institución. Mediante un análisis de regresión lineal, existe una relación entre el tamaño de una institución y el número total de publicaciones, pero no para el ratio de académicos titulares/no titulares. Puntuar en lo más alto del ranking de publicaciones totales no garantizó las puntuaciones en la evaluación del número de publicaciones por miembro académico en la institución. Las facultades del Medio-Oeste fueron responsables de más publicaciones por institución que las otras regiones. Muchas facultades solo generaron una mínima producción durante este periodo de evaluación. Conclusión: Mientras muchas facultades tienen académicos de farmacia práctica que contribuyen fuertemente a la literatura biomédica, otras facultades no. Los académicos de farmacia práctica del Medio-Oeste publicaron más manuscritos en revistas que los académicos de otras regiones del país. Más facultades de farmacia necesitan involucrar a sus académicos en acciones científicas proporcionando apoyo e incentivos.

Only one study evaluated the scientific activity in community pharmacies in Spain, and it was restricted to articles published in just two journals. Objective: To assess the scientific activity in community pharmacies in Spain through a bibliometric analysis of the original papers published during the years 1995-2005. Methods: IPA, MEDLINE, CSIC database and the journals Seguimiento Farmacoterapéutico y Pharmaceutical Care España were used as data sources. Production indicators, consumption indicators and the impact factor (IF) as a repercussion index were analyzed. Results: 122 articles were included in the review. The articles were published in 12 journals, 78.7% of them in Pharmaceutical Care España and Seguimiento Farmacoterapéutico. The mean number of authors per article was 4.2 (SD=2.1). The transitivity index was 71.3%. The total number of references cited in the articles was 2110. The mean number of references per article was 17.3 SD=9.3. The value of the insularity index was 57.6%. Self citation was 6.8% and the Price index was 66.5%. No impact factor was available for 6 journals. Conclusions: Publication of articles on community pharmacy-based research in Spain has undergone an important increase in the last 5 years. The existence of authors who publish very few studies, the high insularity index and the lack of randomized, controlled trials may be considered as negative indicators in community pharmacy-based research in Spain. Sólo existe un estudio bibliométrico conocido sobre investigación en farmacia comunitaria en España, y estaba centrado en los trabajos publicados únicamente en dos revistas. Objetivo: Evaluar la actividad científica en investigación en farmacia comunitaria en España realizando un análisis bibliométrico de los artículos originales publicados entre los años 1995-2005. Métodos: Se utilizaron como fuentes de datos IPA, MEDLINE, la base de datos del CSIC y las revistas Seguimiento Farmacoterapéutico y Pharmaceutical Care España. Se analizaron indicadores de producción, indicadores de consumo e indicadores de repercusión de los artículos publicados. Resultados: Se incluyeron 122 artículos en la revisión. Los artículos fueron publicados en 12 revistas, el 78,7% en Pharmaceutical Care España y Seguimiento Farmacoterapéutico. El número medio de autores por artículo fue 4,2 (DE=2,1). El índice de transitoriedad fue de 71,3%. El número total de referencias encontradas en los artículos fue de 2110 (17,3 DE=9,3 por artículo). El índice de aislamiento fue de 57,6%, el porcentaje de autocitación de 6,8% y el índice de Price de 66,5%. No se pudo estudiar el FI de 6 revistas. Conclusiones: La publicación de artículos de investigación en la farmacia comunitaria en España ha experimentado un crecimiento importante en los últimos 5 años. La existencia de autores que publican muy poco, el elevado índice de aislamiento y la falta de estudios experimentales controlados y aleatorizados pueden considerarse como indicadores negativos de la investigación en farmacia comunitaria en España.
