This case book will be based on real life scenarios of patient cases which have been encountered over several decades in one of the largest phototherapy centers in the United States. To our knowledge, there has not been anything similar published to date. By presenting various cases and how to manage such cases, we aim to educate dermatology trainees and practicing dermatologist who are trying to familiarize themselves with phototherapy. A recent study has shown that many dermatologists do not know how to administer phototherapy, and most graduating residents do not have adequate teaching and experience with administering phototherapy during their residencies. Therefore, the hope is that this book will fill a critical gap in the field of dermatology.

This research project focuses on patient-centered care (PCC) in the context of inpatient acute psychiatric units. Hospitals have been claiming their renewed outlooks on health-care via PCC. It has become an increasingly popular term to use on hospital websites and in presidential statements. The technologies and practices surrounding psychiatric care have evolved in such a way that patients are more welcomed to have an input in their care. This project discusses the discourse around PCC at Mental Health Care Facilities in Maine. There is no consensus on the definition; the meanings ascribed to it are derived from the individual institutions. This project asks: In what ways has the PCC initiative impacted facility understandings and practices of care? This project uses official document analysis, interviews, and surveys to develop the full range of data needed to construct the conversation around PCC. Patients received a preexisting survey to evaluate patient satisfaction. Psychiatrists of the acute psychiatric unit where surveys are collected have been interviewed. A comprehensive definition of PCC would allow for more fluid discourse between institutions. Moving forward all U.S acute psychiatric unit mission, vision, and value statements should be evaluated. More data from interviews should be collected and analyzed to determine the social implications of PCC and doctor- centered care. An analysis comparing how many acute wards use each method must be done to see how mainstream each method is. We must determine if PCC is the best method of care.

Problem. The electronic form used by lactation consultants to document assessment findings, interventions, plans and recommendations, did not meet user’s requirements. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effect of optimization through a User Centered Design (UCD) process on information quality, use and user satisfaction. Goals. The goals were to provide information technology (IT) support for the organization’s Baby Friendly initiative and to support collaborative, consistent messaging for breastfeeding families which could, in turn, support exclusive breast milk feeding. Exclusive breast milk feeding is a population health initiative that could positively impact the triple aim of better care, lower costs and better health. Objectives. Information quality, use and user satisfaction affect user adoption and acceptance of IT solutions. The objective of this project was to test the effectiveness of UCD on optimization by measuring the increase in information quality, use and user satisfaction after implementation of an optimized electronic lactation assessment. Plan. Stakeholders were identified and the electronic form was optimized through UCD. A pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental design was chosen to measure the effect of optimization. Instruments included a modified version of the System and Use Assessment Survey (AHRQ, n.d.), a chart audit tool and an electronic data warehouse use query. IRB approval was obtained from COMIRB and Regis University. The pre and post data collection periods were each six weeks in length, allowing for a two week chart audit period and four week survey. The intervention was implemented after the close of the pre-test period. Clinical users were educated following the organization’s usual methods for EHR changes. Five months after the intervention, the study timeline was repeated for the post-test period. After the post-test period, a use query was run to collect data for both pre-test and post-test periods. The scope of investment managers has increased to include many niche strategies such as predicting drug development outcomes. Pharmaceutical firms must submit a New Drug Application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after the completion of their clinical trials in order to get the final regulatory approval before they can market the drug. In this paper, I search for the stock market's ability to accurately predict designations before the actual announcement for 116 PDUFA dates. I find that the market is able to predict approval designations by the FDA and that this predictive power is stronger for smaller capitalization firms.

Medical humanitarianism is generally viewed very positively by society. Selfless humanitarians are going to war-torn, disaster-affected, or otherwise undesirable locations to provide medical care to those who are in need. However, when considered more carefully, it becomes clear that there are many problematic aspects of humanitarian aid. That is not to say that humanitarian aid is unnecessary, but rather that humanitarian actions are likely to have some unintended consequences or fail to live up to their potential no matter how well-meaning the intentions. Acknowledging that medical humanitarianism is but a single component of the response to complex humanitarian emergencies and lacks the ability to end wars or change political systems, medical aid is an important consideration in how populations emerge from such emergency situations. This study will examine how medical humanitarian groups operate in the context of complex humanitarian emergencies and how their varied approaches impact the effectiveness of their interventions. In order to examine this question, I will consider the unique histories and approaches of two of the most important actors on the medical humanitarian scene, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and how these unique histories and approaches impacted their effectiveness in the case of the Great Lakes refugee crisis following the Rwandan genocide. Analysis of the actions of both the ICRC and MSF found that both organizations had some successes during the Great Lakes crisis, but also had many shortcomings that prevented their aid from being as effective as it had the potential to be. Following the Great Lakes crisis, a number of actions were taken to address the shortcomings of the aid community, but adjustments will need to be continuously made as humanitarian emergencies continue to evolve.

Stewart, President of the Davis Coal and Coke Company of Baltimore, Maryland, regarding medical treatment of coal miners. Formats include correspondence (mainly carbon copies), memoranda, and questionaires. The majority of the correspondence is between Stewart and medical doctors; the most frequent correspondent is Dr. Joseph Miller of Thomas, West Virginia. Subjects include health concerns of miners and laborers and treatment for common ailments, as well as unionization.

Goldstein, Health Care Administrator, Records Regarding United Mine Workers of America Health and Retirement Funds, 1950-1992. Records of Dr. George S. Goldstein, a health care administrator who worked in the Ohio and Pennsylvania coal fields. Dr. Goldstein's work concerned the Appalachian coalfield medical care system, especially in terms of the role played by the United Mine Workers of America and its health and retirement fund.

The correspondence, scrapbooks, articles and speeches of the collection document the later portion of the life of Daniel Hale (1912-1975), a Princeton physician and conservationist, who was a creator of the board of the Southern Soil Conservation District, and a founder of the Mountain Resource Conservation and Development Area. Correspondents include Robert C. Byrd, James Kee, Arch A. Moore, Jr., and Jennings Randolph.

Kelley, Physicians' Accounts, 1886, 1891, 1905-1906. Four volumes titled "Physician's Visiting List," dated 1886, 1891, 1905, and 1906, for the Parkersburg, West Virginia, area. The 1891 copy contains a prescription written by J.H. Kelley, M.D. of Parkersburg, suggesting that all volumes were Kelley's. They contain numerous names, addresses, charges, and treatments, as well as other miscellaneous notes.

"The experimental data which will be presented consist of estimations on urine samples of normal humans and of patients suffering from a variety of clinical conditions. The urines have been assayed by a biological and by a chemical method, both of which purport to measure substances similar to those isolated from the adrenal cortex. The chief purpose of this undertaking was to define the correlation between the results of the bio as say and chemical assay on each sample of urine. A secondary purpose was to determine the suitability of these methods (particularly the chemical method) for use in hospital laboratories as tools to aid clinicians in their assessment of adrenal cortical function for the diagnosis and management of the individual patients. ..."

A list of Mason County medical practitioners alphabetically arranged, and including life span dates, parents' names, spouses' name, dates of practice, region of practice, and titles of books where more information can be found. Mention is made of early frontier doctors, James Craik and William Fleming. Craik was the doctor accompanying George Washington's surveying party to Pt. Pleasant, and Fleming was the attending physician to the wounded at the Battle of Pt. Pleasant. Material covers the years 1770-1950.

The day book and papers of Dr. Squire Bosworth and family. Squire Bosworth was one of the earliest physicians of Randolph County, and his day book records details of his medical practice indicating common procedures and remedies as well as charges and costs during the early nineteenth century. Bosworth was also a deputy and county clerk of Randolph County, and included among the papers are court documents. Along with his son, Squire Newton Bosworth, the family acquired interests in landholding which is reflected in deeds, surveys, correspondence and tax receipts from Texas and West Virginia. Among the correspondence is an 1885 letter from William L. Wilson surveying his Congressional re-election possibilities.
