Aims: To explore the mediational effect of activities of daily living (ADL) and kinesiophobia on the cardiac function and health status of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Methods: From October 2021 to January 2022, a total of 244 CHF patients treated in the Department of Cardiology of general hospitals were recruited by the convenience sampling method. They were investigated with the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia Heart (TSK‐SV Heart), the Barthel index for assessing ADL, and the EuroQol five‐dimensional questionnaire (EQ‐5D) for assessing the health status. Results: The cardiac function and kinesiophobia of CHF patients were both negatively correlated with their health status (r = −.390 and −0.410, respectively, both p <.01). Besides, the ADL of CHF patients was positively correlated with the health status (r =.320, p <.01). The cardiac function of CHF patients was negatively correlated with the ADL (r = −.412, p <.01), but positively correlated with kinesiophobia (r =.180, p <.01). The mediation proportion of ADL plus kinesiophobia between the cardiac function and health status of CHF patients was 43.48%. Both ADL and kinesiophobia partially mediated the effect of cardiac function on health status in CHF patients, but their mediational effects showed no significant difference (p =.777). Conclusion: Both ADL and kinesiophobia exert obvious mediational effects between cardiac function and health status in CHF patients. Individualized cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs based on the cardiac function, ADL and kinesiophobia of CHF patients may contribute to reduce the medical burden and improve the well‐being of affected people. Empirical social-ecological system (SES) research on neighbourhoods' common property is scarce, especially in unpacking the mediational effects of SES components on residents' collective action performance. By conceptualizing Ostrom's SES framework, this paper aims to explore key institutional-social-ecological factors and mediational effects of the interaction variables that influence residents' collective action performance. To this end, 414 questionnaire data were collected from ten gated communities in Taigu, China. Through the ridge regression model, it is found that nine institutional-social-ecological factors are associated with residents' collective action performance. Next, based on the identified institutional-social-ecological factors, the bootstrapping approach was utilized to study the mediational effects of the interaction variables. The results show that (i) frequency of communication among residents, (ii) conflict among residents, and (iii) residents' investment in community management mediate the relationships between the institutional-social-ecological factors and residents' collective action performance. Objectives: The association between childhood trauma and suicidal ideation has been well documented in several populations, including individuals with a substance use disorder (SUD). However, a gap still exists in the literature regarding the mechanisms by which childhood trauma later impacts suicide risk. This cross‐sectional study tested the effect of childhood trauma on suicidal ideation, as well as the mediating effect of tolerance for psychological pain (managing the pain and enduring the pain) in that relationship, controlling for the effect of depressive symptoms, in individuals with a SUD. Methods: A sample of 102 adults with a SUD participated in the study. Path analysis by structural equation modelling tested a mediation model. Results: Depressive symptoms and lower levels of managing the pain were found to fully mediate the association between childhood trauma and suicidal ideation. Conclusions: Our results suggest that depressive symptoms and a lack of ability to manage psychological pain contribute towards explaining why traumatic childhood experiences may result in suicidal cognitions in individuals with SUDs. Moreover, they have relevant implications for prevention and clinical interventions regarding suicidal ideation in this population. Practitioner points: Childhood trauma relates to suicidal ideation in individuals with a substance use disorder.Depressive symptoms contribute towards explaining why traumatic childhood experiences may result in suicidal cognitions.A lack of ability to manage psychological pain also contributes towards explaining this relationship.The obtained results have relevant implications for the prevention of and clinical intervention for suicidal ideation in SUD individuals. Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to examine the mediational role of meaning in life on the relationship between optimism and subjective well-being in older adults. Two hundred and fifty community-dwelling subjects completed several instruments assessing the above constructs. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that optimism was positively associated with both meaning in life and subjective well-being. Furthermore, the relationship between optimism and wellbeing was partially mediated by meaning in life. Although numerous studies have found that optimism is a significant predictor of well-being, the current results indicate that it might not be a key predictor in elders. Our findings suggest that a focus on meaning in life may be a productive avenue to enhance subjective well-being in later life although stable internal resources such as optimism and pessimism impact their subjective well-being. Abstract: Objective: To devise more-effective physical activity interventions, the mediating mechanisms yielding behavioral change need to be identified. The Baron–Kenny method is most commonly used, but has low statistical power and may not identify mechanisms of behavioral change in small-to-medium size studies. More powerful statistical tests are available. Study Design and Setting: Inactive adults (N = 52) were randomized to either a print or a print-plus-telephone intervention. Walking and exercise-related social support were assessed at baseline, after the intervention, and 4 weeks later. The Baron–Kenny and three alternative methods of mediational analysis (Freedman–Schatzkin; MacKinnon et al.; bootstrap method) were used to examine the effects of social support on initial behavior change and maintenance. Results: A significant mediational effect of social support on initial behavior change was indicated by the MacKinnon et al., bootstrap, and, marginally, Freedman–Schatzkin methods, but not by the Baron–Kenny method. No significant mediational effect of social support on maintenance of walking was found. Conclusions: Methodologically rigorous intervention studies to identify mediators of change in physical activity are costly and labor intensive, and may not be feasible with large samples. The use of statistically powerful tests of mediational effects in small-scale studies can inform the development of more effective interventions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
