Jamie Kruse of smudge studio is interviewed by co-editor, Valerie Triggs, in this special issue of the Review of Education, Pedagogy, and Cultural Studies, regarding smudge studio's site-specific project, OBSERVATORY. Kruse explains OBSERVATORY as a geo-cosmo field station workshop and tea hut where contemporary practices of tea drinking are offered to guests for experiencing tea's distinctive expressions of the forces of sun, earth, season, and cultural wisdom. Kruse discuss the ways in which tea, as an object, has pedagogic potential for reweaving human consciousness and imagination in relation to the cosmos as well as how it has become a personified force for smudge studio's ongoing collaboration. The active usage of the concept of «media design» in the modern information space highlights the problem of its definition and lexicographical fixation. Among various types of dictionaries, consolidated ones are singled out. Special attention is drawn to those in which definitions of field concepts or philological interpretations of specific terms that denote them are gathered through information search methods and are compiled and ordered from scientific and lexicographical works. The article analyzes the main features and definitions of the concept of «media design» as documented in scientific and lexicographical works and reference sources. The specifics of the functioning of the corresponding term, its origin, and use in professional texts are revealed. The method of systematization and comparison of the collected material helped identify contextual synonyms used by design professionals. Through definitive analysis, the main features of the concept of «media design» are clarified, and its definition is proposed. The application of data visualization method enabled the creation of a presentation and video clip for a visual representation of information about media design and related concepts. The inventoried material has been adapted for a dictionary article in the electronic educational resource (EER) «Lexical Minimum of Mеdia Scientist» (as one of the research areas of the collective topic «Media Studies in Scientific and Educational Discourses»), which is being developed and filled by faculty members and students of the Faculty of Journalism at the Boris Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University. According to the developed template of the dictionary article, the primary data were systematized, unified and converted to EER. The author's definitions of the concept of «media design» form five vectors of relations (three vectors of systemic and two vectors of non-systemic relations) through which scholars interpret the analyzed concept, requiring standardization and lexicographical fixation in dictionaries.

Nowadays, a lot of students find mathematics a boring and difficult subject to follow. Geometry is one of the fields of study in middle school mathematics which gets a larger portion to be studied by students at school compared to other materials such as algebra, numbers, statistics, and probability. This is due to many concepts contained in geometry and its abstract nature, so in teaching geometry, the teacher needs to plan it well so that it can be understood by students. However, geometry is still considered one of the most difficult materials for students to understand. The use of mobile-based learning media can be an alternative as a solution to make students more active in the learning process. Based on the above background, this research will analyze and design mobile-based geometry learning media for middle school students. The research will be carried out using the design thinking method to get the needs of the target user. Design thinking is a non-linear, iterative process that teams use to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems, and create innovative solutions to prototype and test. Lin Huiyin (1904–1955) was the first woman architect in modern China. Her romantic love stories have shaped a discourse that, for optimal engagement, both provides and requires transmedia and intertextual media theories. This research examines Lin’s romantic stories that entangled with her career and life, from the perspective of media ecology, narrative, and gender studies. I argue that although the Chinese media environment is censored, constrained, and scrutinized, given enough time and movement among multiple platforms, a medium can shape its own ecology and develop “organic” discussions on a subject that is commonly perceived as less political and more humanistic, particularly romantic love. These discussions provide a more spontaneous discourse for media users to share their opinions and expose more genuine views on gender, nation, and morality. These topics require continuing conversations rather than didactic education to change. Although change usually does not occur quickly, the airing of genuine yet problematic opinions helps the public and stakeholders observe, identify, and interact with them and create the possibility to reshape public opinions on gender roles, particularly women’s roles in romantic discourse, which always interacts with women’s individual realization as well as professional, familial, and social relationships. Accessibility is an essential component of inclusive design. Through accessibility affordances, developers and design teams can allow players with various needs (vision, hearing, motor, and cognitive) to use any given educational game to its fullest purpose while enjoying the experience, and educators can ensure all students engage in digital activities. Despite the recent increase in accessibility efforts, it can still be challenging for design teams to evaluate accessibility quality in digital educational games. Educational games have an extra layer that aims to promote learning of specific content, meaning its accessibility features have to allow learners to receive and process the content of information. This study proposes an applied and researchbased rubric to discuss accessibility quality in educational games. The article reviews the reports delivered on November 1–3, 2022, at the International Research-to-Practice Conference Media Art—XXI Century: Genesis, Art Programs, Education Problems. It was organized by the Russian Academy of Arts, the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts, the State Institute for Art Studies, Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Design and Applied Arts, the Moscow Architectural Institute (State Academy), and the National Academy of Design. The conference aimed at comprehending the current state of media art in the context of digitalization of classical works and methods of their exposure; at identifying key program and aesthetic dominants in media art; and at systematizing the most relevant educational projects. The organizers suggested the following aspects as the major research focuses: classical arts and media in digital discourse; new media in the socio-cultural environment; current media forms and their genesis; new media in the urban environment; interdisciplinary and authorial projects; educational processes and new competencies. Cultural institutions today are faced with the search for a definition of materiality, with fixation of transitory art; and in response, contemporary art studies are forced to develop new theoretical concepts to be used in scholarly discourse. It is how contemporary media, digital and post-digital technologies influence the state and development of contemporary art and art history practice, architecture, design, and decorative arts, that became the key research task of Media Art—XXI Century Conference. The conference demonstrated the wide range of aesthetic, art history, culturological and pedagogical aspects, which are incorporated in the creation, exposure, and further circulation of media art in the socio-cultural space. В статье представлен обзор докладов, озвученных в рамках Международной научно-практической конференции «Медиаискусство — XXI век. Генезис, художественные программы, вопросы образования» 1–3 ноября 2022, совместно организованной Российской академией художеств, НИИ теории и истории изобразительных искусств РАХ, Государственным институтом искусствознания, РГХПУ им. С.Г. Строганова, МАРХИ (Государственной академией) и Национальной академией дизайна. Целью конференции стало осмысление современного состояния медиаискусства в контексте цифровизации классических произведений и методов их экспонирования; выявление ключевых программных и эстетических доминант в сфере медиаискусства; систематизация наиболее релевантных образовательных проектов. В качестве ключевых исследовательских фокусов организаторами были предложены следующие ракурсы: классические искусства и медиа в цифровом дискурсе; новые медиа в социокультурной среде; актуальные формы медиа и их генезис; новые медиа в городской среде; междисциплинарные и авторские проекты; образовательные процессы и новые компетенции. Культурные институции сталкиваются сегодня с поиском определения материальности, с фиксацией искусства преходящего момента, в ответ современное знание вынуждено разрабатывать новые теоретические понятия для употребления в научном обиходе. То, как современные медиа, цифровые и постцифровые технологии влияют на состояние и развитие современного искусства и на искусствоведческую практику, на архитектуру, дизайн и декоративное искусство, стало ключевой исследовательской задачей настоящей конференции «Медиаискусство — XXI век. Генезис, художественные программы, вопросы образования». Результаты проведенного научного мероприятия продемонстрировали широту диапазона эстетических, искусствоведческих, культурологических, педагогических аспектов, заключенных в процессе создания, экспонирования и последующей циркуляции медиаискусства в социокультурном пространстве.

The article substantiates the relevance of media design through the disclosure of the main trends in the development of the media industry: the growth of the media and entertainment industry market; the development of digital technologies. The concepts of “project”, “media”, “media project” are revealed. The interpretations of the concept of “media project” used by other authors are listed and analyzed. The main components of any project are revealed, namely the goal, deadlines and resources. The features of media projects are revealed: they can be oriented both to the market of goods and to the market of services; when developing them, it is necessary to find a balance between economic expediency and social mission; the result of a media project is that the media product is consumed in free time, that is, in leisure hours; the media product must be entertaining to some extent, due to the impact of the consumption economy; the media project is planned and implemented in conditions of: special dynamism and a high degree of uncertainty of the external environment, and also media convergences. The authors propose to introduce a new classification feature and types of media projects: “by media industry sector”: traditional, network, transmedia. The authors have identified a contradiction expressed in the fact that the quality of a media project does not guarantee the quality of a media product in a global sense — from the point of view of the intellectual development of society. The tendency of decreasing the quality of media products is revealed in detail and justified. Trends in the consumption of media products are considered: the media are becoming more and more entertaining; strengthening the primacy of the function of satisfying consumer requests before the function of education and upbringing; consumer expectations are simplified.

Our studies of the environmental protection and rational use of resources will greatly facilitate the eco culture development of society, especially the younger generation. The art imagery, colouristics, nonstandard interpretation, emotion, humour, and satire are needed in modern eco posters, and so it becomes more important to use in the advertising appeal as a visual-verbal model such creative technologies as metaphor, metonymy, allegory, associations, as well as hyperbole. Comparing the reflection of eco problems and theirunderstanding by society, we can mention that the level of eco culture in Europe is much higher. This is usually thanks to the daily nurturing of the society in this direction with the help of outdoor, television, web advertisements, supporting various eco-initiatives by the Governments and private funds, and discipline of all population concerning waste utilization. The visual means and main stages of the historical development of eco posters in the context of culture are analyzed. Authors are considering the imagery and stylistics of the eco poster as public advertising. These materials are part of the course of academic lectures “Design of Advertising”, which can be used not only for designers but also ecologists, advertisers, culturologists, sociologists and philosophers.

Media design knows various ways to combine text and pictorial elements in layouts. This article looks at photographs that are combined with hard-to-read text elements and investigates, whether these text elements are seen as disturbing or confusing or should rather be understood as visual elements similar to meaningful props. Qualitative interviews and a survey were conducted showing the test persons several layouts with and without hard-to-read text elements and asking for their impressions and evaluation on various dimensions such as 'boring-interesting', 'old-fashioned-modern', and 'clear-confusing'. It becomes obvious that the Gestalt theory's fundamental assumption 'the whole is more than the parts' also applies in this context, even though these pictures actually violate Gestalt-rules: layouts with hard-to-read text elements were not only perceived as more interesting, but also the literal meaning of the text played a subordinate role compared to the associations evoked by their look. The present paper intends to follow the debate on applied research in Czech social sciences and presents the case of interdisciplinary research in Southern Slovakia. The authors frame their approach to the research field using the Deleuzian terms of virtuality and multiplicity to underline the processual character of both ethnography and the field itself. On this basis, we develop the argument that the social sciences always act ontologically through their performative nature, which is especially, but not exclusively, true for such applied research where intervention plays an integral part. We consider our intended actions according to the features of the so-called medium design to be desired interplays, which transfer our actions to other actors in our research field and within which we seek to improve the living conditions in a building of flats at risk of eviction. Such interventions carry unintended consequences, which we reflect on in the text and describe how we dealt with them. The mission is to consider engagement and intervention in terms of their public and practical addressability and to show that the use of knowledge outside of academics as being something implicit to the social sciences rather than a trendy extension of their scope. In this paper the author analyzes the phenomenon of prototype worlds - synthetic environments of simulators, video games and other types of software - used to conduct experiments at the level of user sensorium, environmental physics and social design. The author presents the evolution of the concept, beginning with Buckminister Fuller's World Game project, moving through media experiments in the field of game design, and finally presenting contemporary applications (such as a drone pilot training project for the U.S. Air Force) and their implications. The recent use of dry baths allows the separation of urine from wastewaters with no dilution and without mixing with human faecal material nor detergents, etc. Human urine can be used as culture medium for microalgae because of its high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Nevertheless, a culture medium to grow microalgae requires some other compounds with less concentration including some metals. We assessed the effect of adding Fe, Co, Mo and Zn at specific concentrations, defined by a Box–Behnken experiment design, as well as the effect of metal concentrations on biomass growth and lipid accumulation. The levels of each variable were selected considering the concentration of metals in the Bold Basal Medium (BBM), twice this value and half of that concentration. Human urine supplemented with two metals (Fe and Zn or Fe and Co) was a feasible alternative to the BBM medium. Higher biomass concentrations, lipid production and, hence, lipid quota were obtained with the selected alternative medium. Similar conditions were obtained for the three strains evaluated in this study. In Chlorella vulgaris, an increase of biomass yield (23%) was obtained with the medium designed in this study but lipid production never exceeded the one obtained with the reference medium. Biomass yields (66 and 59%) and lipids production (97 and 23%) were simultaneously increased in Scenedesmus sp. and Chlorococcum humicola. In C. vulgaris, Fe and Co positively affected growth. Scenedesmus, was affected negatively by Co, Mo, and Zn. C. humicola was affected positively by Zn and negatively by Fe. It was demonstrated that it is feasible to replace complex media like BBM by a formulation consisting of a urine dilution supplemented with only two metals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present research was motivated by the routine digital media practice of producing page layouts as composite images that include several unrelated pictures. We investigated whether or how visually highlighting affective and positional components of pictures in a viewer's field of vision might influence viewer perception and evaluation of the composite image. We examined combinations of visual, spatial, and affective features of cues in composite images to learn whether they affected the viewer's attentional capture of other affective information in the composite image and viewer's affective evaluations. The manipulation check of the feature combinations (positive/negative affect, presence/absence of highlighted color, central/peripheral position) showed significant effects of these features and their interactions on viewers' eye movements. On the other hand, we observed only a small effect on viewers' affective evaluations. Our results suggested that media page layout designers might manipulate the viewer's attention by visual and positional adjustments of affective components in composite images. This article posits a definition of infology, as a science backed by its field of expertise, information design. It is based on the source text What is infology? by Rune Pettersson and Esselte Förlag (1990), which is reproduced and translated in full. The article then restitues the fundamental concepts of infology with a few adjustments and reframing that have become necessary since 1990. This makes it possible to establish infology as a science of visual, sound, taste, olfactory and tactile (hyper)mediations and information design as a practice of conception and realization of these hypermedia, but also to define the respective roles of the Infologist and the Media specialist. MOOCs are configured as one of the technologies that have been gaining ground in the educational field as a new approach in virtual education. In the past few years, its presence in educational institutions has increased. In addition, the level of research and publications that revolve around these technological developments is increasing. In this sense, this research focuses on the design and validation of the structure, content and tasks of a t-MOOC for the development of the Digital Competence of non-university teachers based on the DigCompEdu Framework of the European Union. For this, a Delphi-type validation design is established using an expert coefficient that has the participation of 191 people. The results demonstrate the validity of the training proposal, as well as the uniformity of criteria of the experts. In this sense, the application and benefits of t-MOOCs as tools for competence development are discussed.

This article brings together two strands of research that have the potential to inform the development of constructive forms of journalism: online comments and media design. Through a three-year-long case study of the development of new formats for online comments on the website of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, I explore the challenges encountered from two perspectives: the design features of the commenting system and the design process. While the broadcaster has emphasized developing features for strengthening editorial control, user engagement has faltered. A lack of attention to users in the design process seems to have contributed to the problems. These findings have implications for constructive journalism’s ambitions to facilitate audience engagement, in particular when tied to online platforms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Industrial film and television production (FTP) includes many elements of creative work on sounds and images that are best addressed as audiovisual design. Two paradigmatic understandings of design, "design-as-problem-solving" and "design-as-meaning-creation", have a bearing on these elements. The issues dealt with during FTP work processes, as well as the problems to be solved and the characteristics of the work processes used, resemble issues, problems, and process characteristics within design work. From the perspective of audiovisual communication, both the design and production aspects of a process are considered to make an important impact on a message. In FTP, these aspects are blurred. This paper discusses the benefits of approaching FTP as creation of audiovisual communication, in which design is an integrated part of that process.
