Objective: Ankyloglossia affects a person's overall well-being and life, from malnutrition due to poor feeding and mechanical problems to psychological stress and low self-esteem, thus affecting social life. This case reports the use of non-scalpel techniques, such as a super pulsed laser, to manage ankyloglossia in a non-syndromic patient suffering from speech incompetence and restricted tongue mobility and highlights its advantages over other conventional techniques. Case Report: A 17-year-old male patient presented with a complaint of restricted tongue mobility, due to which he could not pronounce certain words clearly. As the patient was apprehensive about the use of a scalpel, it was decided to manage ankyloglossia using a diode laser against the conventional scalpel technique. Thus, the laser-assisted lingual frenectomy using GaAs super pulsed laser was used to excise the lingual frenulum. Conclusion: This case report suggests that ankyloglossia can be successfully treated by using laser-assisted surgery and gives superior results specifically in terms of lesser pain and bleeding. Materials and methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using the PubMed and PubMed Central search engines, considering articles published in the English language between 1 January 2000 and 30 June 2022. The bibliographic search was performed using the following keywords as search strings: "lingual", "frenulectomy", "frenulotomy", "frenulum", "ankyloglossia", and "laser." Results: A total of 14 articles were included in this review, including four prospective observational studies, one case–control study, three cross-sectional studies, four retrospective studies, and one randomized controlled trial. The data extracted from each article are summarized in a table. Conclusions: In the literature, there are still limited studies regarding the treatment of hypertrophic frenulum. No common indications for the treatment of ankyloglossia and universally used classification for lingual frenulum were found. Currently, clinicians prefer the use of a diode laser for treatment. This method offers several advantages over the use of a scalpel blade. Many studies agree on the usefulness of providing patients with myofunctional rehabilitation to improve lingual mobility, both prior to surgical therapy and in the postoperative period. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of the length of the lingual frenulum with the craniofacial morphology in adults. METHOD AND MATERIALS: The study comprised a total of 144 subjects, aged 18 to 28 years, divided into 3 groups (48 in each group), based on ANB angle i.e., Skeletal Class I, Skeletal Class II & Skeletal Class III. To measure the length of the lingual frenulum direct and indirect methods were used. A Lingual frenulum ruler was used for direct measurement and the differences between the maximum mouth opening reduction (MMOR) with and without the tip of the tongue touching the incisive papilla measurement were taken for the indirect method. A lateral cephalogram was collected from each subject and a cephalometric analysis was done to assess craniofacial morphology. Statistical analysis was done by ANOVA and the significance of the mean difference between (inter) the groups was done by Tukey’s HSD (honestly significant difference) post hoc test after ascertaining normality by Shapiro‑Wilk’s test and homogeneity of variance between groups by Levene’s test RESULTS: The lingual frenulum length and maximum mouth opening reduction were significantly increased in the Skeletal Class III subjects with a statistically significant value of P < 0.001 when compared with the Skeletal Class I and Skeletal Class II subjects. CONCLUSION: A balance in the teeth positioning is maintained by orofacial musculature and any disturbance which occurs in this, results in malocclusion. Malocclusion can result in a long lingual frenulum that pushes the mandibular anterior forwards. Hence, the malocclusion and lingual frenulum length relationship are essential to eliminate the erratic forces and to attain excellent results, following the elimination of malocclusion. The lingual frenulum is a submucosal component significantly involved in the mobility of the tongue. In the case of short lingual frenulum, different surgical approaches have been proposed. Atmospheric plasma is a thermal technique of vaporization or sublimation of the superficial tissues, without going deep, and the resulting fine carbonized layer avoids bleeding. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of atmospheric plasma (voltaic arc dermabrasion) for the frenectomy of a short lingual frenulum. A total of 30 patients with an age range between 6–11 years old and a class III/IV Kotlow's ankyloglossia classification were included in the study. The Kotlow's free-tongue, maximal interincisal mouth opening (MIO, mm) and interincisal mouth opening with tongue tip to maxillary incisive papillae at roof of mouth (MOTTIP, mm) were calculated at the baseline, immediately postoperatively (T0), at one week (T1), one month (T2) and two months (T3). A significant increase of Kotlow's measurements, MOTTIP and MIO were detected when comparing the baseline and the T0 (p < 0.05). No significant difference was detected between the T0, T1 and T2 (p > 0.05). The atmospheric plasma demonstrated a very minimal invasive approach for frenectomy, without important or fibrotic complications and with very low recurrence rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ankyloglossia is a condition of limited tongue mobility caused by a short lingual frenulum. The diagnosis and treatment of ankyloglossia are still controversial. The main clinical problems encountered during breastfeeding are difficulty in sucking and its clinical reflections. This study aims to evaluate the infant population born with ankyloglossia and to determine the results of frenotomy. We conducted an observational, cross-sectional study among infants born in a tertiary hospital. We included all infants born between 1 January and 30 June 2022. The neonatal follow-up protocol for ankyloglossia was determined before the defined dates, and data were recorded during the screening period. The recorded data were retrospectively collected from the files. Within six months, 705 infants were born. Due to additional problems and other conditions that prevent breastfeeding, evaluable data of 207 (29.3%) infants could not be provided. Of the remaining 498 infants, 234 (33.2%) had ankyloglossia. While none of the infants without ankyloglossia had a breastfeeding problem after appropriate training, 28.6% of the ankyloglossia group had a breastfeeding problem (p < 0.001). The need for frenotomy differed significantly between Coryllos groups (p < 0.001). Breastfeeding was unsuccessful before frenotomy in 12 Coryllos type-1 patients, and all had difficulty in sucking. Frenotomy was performed within the three-month follow-up period in all patients with complaints of inability to firmly grasp the breast, nipple slipping from the mouth, and nipple biting during the first 24 h. In terms of breastfeeding problems, regardless of the anatomical typology, frenotomy can be performed safely in early life with successful results. If deficiencies or difficulties in breastfeeding are noticed in ankyloglossia patients even at the first control, frenotomy should be recommended in clinical conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[1] Background: Congenital superficial ranulas (CSR) are very uncommon entities in neonates, corresponding to 0.74% in contrast to lingual frenulum alterations ranging from 2.8 to 10.7%. Both anomalies should be appropriately diagnosed and treated [2]. Methods: This paper introduces the case of an 8-week infant with CSR and short lingual frenulum, successfully managed by surgical marsupialization during a frenotomy procedure. After the comprehensive oral examination, we have identified the primary cause of feeding issues. Ranula was diagnosed by classic clinical presentation, ultrasound, and presence of typical mucous during the surgical management [3]. Results: The healing was uneventful, and we did not observe recurrence during the 6-month follow-up. Post-surgery, the infant could breastfeed easily [4]. Conclusion: CSR in case of concomitant ankyloglossia should be identified and surgically treated by marsupialization in the first 6 months before transitioning to solid food.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of lingual frenectomy, as a standalone treatment or in association with myofunctional therapy, on the general and functional aspects of six- to 12-year-old children with anomalies in the lingual frenulum. Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial involved 40 children diagnosed with altered lingual frenulum. Children who received a frenectomy were evaluated 15 and 30 days after the procedure. After 15 days, the children were randomized into two groups: a group that received isotonic tongue exercises (Study Group [SG]) and a group that did not receive isotonic tongue exercises (Control Group [CG]). The outcome evaluator was blinded to group assignment. Statistical tests were used to compare between and within groups (P<0.05). Results: There were 20 children in each group. SG children improved significantly when compared to CG subjects regarding tongue mobility (P=0.016), maximum mouth opening (MMO; P=0.024), and MMO with the tip of the tongue touching the incisive papilla (P=0.026). Abstract Background The lingual frenulum is a mucous membrane fold found underneath the tongue. It helps the tongue to perform its function. There are few anomalies that can affect the lingual frenulum, such as ankyloglossia and absence of the lingual frenulum. We report a case of two lingual frenula to educate practitioners about the presence of such an anomaly. Case presentation A 10-year-old healthy Saudi girl came to our dental clinic complaining of “malpositioned frontal teeth.” Upon intraoral examination, two lingual frenula were found connecting the tongue with the floor of the mouth. Intraoral examination revealed no other abnormalities. Conclusion Double lingual frenulum is an existing frenulum anomaly that did not affect normal function of our patient. A search of the literature revealed that this may well be the first reported case of such a condition.

Between 1997 and 2012, the diagnoses of ankyloglossia and the indication for frenotomy increased by ˃800%. About 38% of diagnosed cases are surgically treated. Breastfeeding promotion includes evaluating maternal hereditary and personal history of breastfeeding, breast structure, endocrinological physiology, emotional well-being of the mother, breastfeeding technique, quality and quantity of milk, and the newborn's ability to latch on and suckle. Frenotomy would be indicated when restriction of tongue function causes difficulties that have not resolved after thorough evaluation and counseling to correct other causes. Frenotomy can have complications: feeding and respiratory difficulties, pain, weight loss, vascular or nerve damage, and delayed diagnosis of other underlying pathologies. It does not always solve breastfeeding difficulties. Interdisciplinary teamwork reduces the frequency of unnecessary frenotomies., (Sociedad Argentina de Pediatría.)

However, lack of consensus continues regarding the diagnosis and management of tongue-tie, reflecting the ongoing knowledge gaps and lack of evidence. ABSTRACT Purpose Verify the position of lips and tongue at rest in newborns with and without ankyloglossia. Methods Cross-sectional study, carried out with 130 newborns in University Hospital. Data collection was performed by the researcher and speech-language pathologists from the Hospital. Information on gestational age, sex, weight, height and days of life was collected. The position of the lips and tongue at rest was evaluated through visual inspection with the newborns asleep. After the newborns were awakened, Neonatal Screening of the validated Protocol for the evaluation of the lingual frenulum for infants was performed to detect the alteration of the lingual frenulum. The data obtained were described and submitted to statistical analysis using the Chi-Square test to verify the association between the position of the lips with the tongue and to compare the position of the lips and tongue with and without ankyloglossia. The Mann-Whitney test was used to verify the behavior of the variables the differed between newborns with and without ankyloglossia. The significance level of 5% was adopted. Results When comparing the data, a significant difference was found between: weight and height with and without ankyloglossia; position of lips and tongue. An association between the position of the tongue and lips with and without ankyloglossia was also found. Conclusion Newborns without alteration of the lingual frenulum have a tendency to remain with their lips closed and their tongue elevated during rest and newborns with ankyloglossia have a tendency to keep their lips parted and their tongue low during rest.

Objective To explore the relationship between a short lingual frenulum and functional articulation disorders and to offer a reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment.Methods A total of 259 patients with functional articulation disorders who visited the West China Hospital of Stomatology from October 2016 to February 2019 were included. The lingual ligaments of patients were clinically examined under natural light and classified into 4 groups according to the distance between the ligament and tongue tip, the functional position of the tongue, and the shape of the tongue tip. Statistical analyses of speech error types and the correlation between functional articulation disorders and the lingual ligament were performed.Results Among all 259 patients, 220 patients had a normal lingual ligament, while only 39 patients had a short lingual ligament. The speech evaluation results of patients with a normal lingual ligament were as follows: no gas delivery 75, postconstructive tone 36, preconstructed tones 67, palatalized misarticulation 19, and consonant deletion 23. The speech evaluation results with a short lingual ligament were as follows: no gas delivery 12, postconstructive tone 5, preconstructed tones 13, palatalized misarticulation 4, and consonant deletion 5. No correlation was observed between functional articulation disorders and the lingual ligament (P=0.939).Conclusion No correlation was found between functional articulation disorders and the lingual ligament. Patients with functional articulation disorders should not be encouraged to undergo ankylotomy; however, speech training should be encouraged instead.

ABSTRACT Purpose: evaluate the influence of frenotomy on the breastfeeding of newborns diagnosed with ankyloglossia. Methods: this is an intervention study performed with 50 newborns diagnosed with ankyloglossia. It was conducted in three stages: diagnosis, intervention and reassessment. In the diagnostic phase, the Protocol for the Assessment of Speech Language with Scores for Babies was applied to diagnose ankyloglossia and a questionnaire assessing the symptoms and coordination of sucking, swallowing and breathing during breastfeeding. In the intervention, frenotomy was performed, and at reassessment, the diagnostic protocol and questionnaire in order to compare the post-surgical effects. Results: of the 50 babies participating in the study, 35 (70%) were boys and 15 (30%) girls. A total of 68% of ankyloglossia cases were reported in the family, a majority (38%) involving cousins. There was a statistically significant reduction in the average protocol score in the reassessment stage, from 8.38 (7-12 points) to 0.86 (0-5 points), as well as a statistically significant improvement in all variables related to the symptoms of breastfeeding. Conclusion: surgical intervention, known as frenotomy, made it possible to improve the negative symptoms of breastfeeding in newborns diagnosed with ankyloglossia.

Background: Ankyloglossia is an anatomical alteration of the frenulum length, volume, compactness, and insertion. It can lead to alterations in the ability to swallow and chewing, and dysfunctional coordination amongst cranio-facial muscles; these alterations are often responsible for respiratory alterations, skeletal malocclusions and dyslalia or the delay of speech. The aim of this study is to estimate the efficacy of lingual frenulectomy with diode-laser technology through a qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Methods: One hundred and twenty-five pediatric patients were recruited: 100 with a lingual pathological frenulum were randomly divided into four operating groups; the other 25 with a borderline pathological frenulum were recruited as a control group. Each patient was included in a follow-up program (T0-T1-T2-T3-T4) for a quantitative and qualitative evaluation: the first through an accurate measurement of Kotlow's free tongue measurement (≥16), Mouth Opening with Tongue Tip to incisive papilla (MOTTIP), Maximal Intercisal Mouth Opening (MIO) and Protrusion; and the second using the Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (ATLFF), Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool (BTAT), and grade of tongue functionality. Results: The increase of the aforementioned quantitative parameters was circa 10 mm, and all patients reacquired full functionality of the tongue. Objective: To relate maxillary and lingual frenulum configuration to breastfeeding success.Study Design: Cross-sectional study.Setting: Newborn nursery in tertiary care academic hospital.Subjects and Methods: Newborns were observed between 24 and 72 hours after birth. Mothers were asked a series of questions relating to their breastfeeding experience. The maxillary and lingual frenula were examined and scored. Corresponding LATCH scores were recorded.Results: A total of 161 mothers with newborns participated. The mean gestational age of newborns was 38.81 weeks (95% CI, 38.65-38.98); 82 (50.9%) male and 79 (49.1%) female newborns were included. In sum, 70.8% had the maxillary frenulum attached to the edge of the alveolar ridge; 28.6%, attached to the fixed gingiva; and 0.6%, attached to mobile gingiva. In addition, 3.7% had anterior ankyloglossia, and 96.3% had no obvious anterior ankyloglossia. There was no significant correlation between maxillary frenulum scores or lingual frenulum scores and LATCH scores (P > .05). Of the mothers included in the study, 56.5% were first-time mothers. Overall, 43.5% of the mothers had other biological children, with 70.0% of those mothers having previously breastfed. Experienced mothers who had breastfed for >3 months had significantly higher LATCH scores. Those who had previously breastfed had a mean LATCH score of 9.16 (95% CI, 8.80-9.52), as compared with those who had not, with a mean of 8.14 (95% CI, 7.43-8.85).Conclusion: We did not find that maxillary frenulum configuration correlated with LATCH scores. Mothers experienced with breastfeeding had better LATCH scores. Attention toward breastfeeding education, particularly in new mothers, should precede maxillary frenotomy in neonates with breastfeeding difficulties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To identify and seek consensus on issues and controversies related to ankyloglossia and upper lip tie in children by using established methodology for American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery clinical consensus statements.Methods: An expert panel of pediatric otolaryngologists was assembled with nominated representatives of otolaryngology organizations. The target population was children aged 0 to 18 years, including breastfeeding infants. A modified Delphi method was used to distill expert opinion into clinical statements that met a standardized definition of consensus, per established methodology published by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.Results: After 3 iterative Delphi method surveys of 89 total statements, 41 met the predefined criteria for consensus, 17 were near consensus, and 28 did not reach consensus. The clinical statements were grouped into several categories for the purposes of presentation and discussion: ankyloglossia (general), buccal tie, ankyloglossia and sleep apnea, ankyloglossia and breastfeeding, frenotomy indications and informed consent, frenotomy procedure, ankyloglossia in older children, and maxillary labial frenulum.Conclusion: This expert panel reached consensus on several statements that clarify the diagnosis, management, and treatment of ankyloglossia in children 0 to 18 years of age. Lack of consensus on other statements likely reflects knowledge gaps and lack of evidence regarding the diagnosis, management, and treatment of ankyloglossia. Aim: To investigate the incidence and characteristics of complications arising from frenotomy for ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) in New Zealand.Methods: Prospective surveillance among hospital-based paediatricians of complications arising from frenotomy for ankyloglossia to children <1 year old was conducted by the New Zealand Paediatric Surveillance Unit for 24 months, from August 2016 to July 2018, inclusive.Results: A total of 16 cases of complications arising from frenotomy were reported. The overall average annual incidence rate was 13.9/100 000. Geographic variation was noted with a peak of 85.6/100 000 in one region. Complications reported: poor feeding (44%), respiratory events (25%), pain (19%), bleeding (19%) and weight loss (19%). Three children (19%) also had delayed diagnosis of an underlying medical condition initially overlooked in favour of treating their ankyloglossia, this has not previously been reported. The majority (75%) of cases required admission to hospital. Treatments given included supplementary feeds (44%), surgical intervention (25%), breastfeeding support (19%), analgesia (13%) and blood products (13%). A total of 25% of children had one or more frenotomies; 50% were treated for two or more of: 'anterior' ankyloglossia, 'posterior' ankyloglossia or 'lip tie'; 50% had their frenotomies performed out of the hospital. Dentists were the most common performing practitioner (31%).Conclusions: Frenotomy rates in New Zealand are unknown. Poor feeding, pain, bleeding, weight loss and delayed diagnosis of an alternative underlying medical condition are important complications that require hospital assessment and admission. Practitioners and parents/families need to be aware of these possibilities. Centralised guidelines with access to specialist second opinions should be developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Recent evidence has emphasized the role of a short lingual frenulum in the pathogenesis of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in childhood. The oral dysfunction induced by a short frenulum may promote oral-facial dysmorphism, decreasing the size of upper airway lumen and increasing the risk of upper airway collapsibility during sleep. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of a short lingual frenulum as risk factor for SDB in children of school age, with and without snoring, who were recruited from the community.Methods: Children aged 6-14 years were recruited from a school in Rome. For all participants, the previously described Sleep Clinical Record (SCR) was completed, and orthodontic evaluation and measurement of lingual frenulum were performed. Tongue strength and endurance were evaluated in all participants using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI). SDB was defined as positive SCR (≥6.5).Results: We assessed 504 children with mean age of 9.6 ± 2.3 years, and in 114 of them (22.6%) a short frenulum was identified. Children with a short lingual frenulum were at significantly higher risk for a positive SCR compared to those with a frenulum of normal length (odds ratio = 2.980, 95% confidence interval = 1.260-6.997). Participants with positive or negative SCR did not differ in tongue strength or endurance.Conclusion: Short lingual frenulum is a risk factor for SDB. An early multidisciplinary approach and screening for SDB are indicated when this anatomical abnormality is recognized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objective: The prevalence of ankyloglossia and its impact on breastfeeding practices may be overestimated, leading to surgical overtreatment in newborns. The study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of ankyloglossia in the first year of life and investigate the association with exclusive and total breastfeeding duration in different regions of Brazil. Materials and Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study involved the recruitment of mother-infant pairs soon after childbirth in public hospitals in three state capitals in Brazil. Interviews were held with the mothers after birth, at 6 and 12 months to collect sociodemographic variables and data on exclusive and total breastfeeding duration. At 12 months of age, the children were submitted to a dental examination for classification of the lingual frenulum using the Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool. Data analysis involved Poisson regression with robust variance, with the calculation of unadjusted and adjusted relative risk (RR). Results: The final sample was composed of 293 children. The prevalence of defined and suspected ankyloglossia was 1% and 4.8%, respectively, totaling 5.8% (confidence interval [95% CI]: 3.1-8.5). No significant difference was found in the prevalence of exclusive and total breastfeeding at 1, 4, and 6 months between children with defined/suspected ankyloglossia and those without ankyloglossia. The multivariable analysis showed that the probability of the child achieving 6 months of breastfeeding did not differ between groups (RR = 0.98; 95% CI: 0.79-1.23; p  = 0.907). Conclusion: The prevalence of defined ankyloglossia was very low and defined/suspected ankyloglossia was not associated with exclusive or total breastfeeding duration. Introduction: Tori are benign hamartoma-like bone excrescences, usually asymptomatic. Their removal should not be systematic. Observation: A 62-year-old patient showed bilateral tori only leaving a 1.5 mm space for the lingual frenulum path between them. The direct functional consequence was a frequent blockage of the salivary caruncles below the tori. Tori resection was performed under local anaesthesia. Surgical outcome was simple with conventional analgesic treatment and oral care. Comfort and function were immediately restored. Discussion: The originality of this case does not lie in the nature of the lesions but in the uncommon size of their hypertrophy, which caused a lingual functional impairment. We have not found a similar case described in the literature.

Background: Ankyloglossia is an anatomical alteration of the frenulum length, volume, compactness, and insertion. It can lead to alterations in the ability to swallow and chewing, and dysfunctional coordination amongst cranio-facial muscles; these alterations are often responsible for respiratory alterations, skeletal malocclusions and dyslalia or the delay of speech. The aim of this study is to estimate the efficacy of lingual frenulectomy with diode-laser technology through a qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Methods: One hundred and twenty-five pediatric patients were recruited: 100 with a lingual pathological frenulum were randomly divided into four operating groups; the other 25 with a borderline pathological frenulum were recruited as a control group. Each patient was included in a follow-up program (T0-T1-T2-T3-T4) for a quantitative and qualitative evaluation: the first through an accurate measurement of Kotlow’s free tongue measurement (≥16), Mouth Opening with Tongue Tip to incisive papilla (MOTTIP), Maximal Intercisal Mouth Opening (MIO) and Protrusion; and the second using the Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (ATLFF), Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool (BTAT), and grade of tongue functionality. Results: The increase of the aforementioned quantitative parameters was circa 10 mm, and all patients reacquired full functionality of the tongue. Conclusions: Diode-laser technology is efficient and innovative in the treatment of pathological lingual frenulums.

Context: Tongue-tie (more formally known as ankyloglossia) is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenulum, which may restrict mobility of the tongue tip impairing its ability to fulfill its functions. The clinical significance of ankyloglossia is varied; rarely symptomatic to a host of problems including infant feeding difficulties, speech disorders, malocclusions, and others. Aims: The need of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and severity of tongue-tie and its association with the type of malocclusions in two populations and also to correlate the various malocclusion traits with the grades of tongue-tie. Subjects and Methods: A total of 700 school children in the age group of 9-17 years were examined for the presence of tongue-tie, 350 from regular schools and 350 from special schools. The presence was evaluated, measured, and graded into Grades I-V according to Kotlow′s method. The malocclusion was assessed according to Angle′s classification. Severity of crowding was assessed by Little′s irregularity index in each case. Various other malocclusion traits were visually assessed, in relation to the positions of the teeth. Statistical Analysis Used: Spearman′s rank correlation method was used to test the relationship between type of malocclusions, grades of tongue-tie and severity of crowding. Significance was considered at the (P < 0.05) level. Results: Statistically significant differences were seen between grades of tongue-tie and Angle′s types of malocclusion and Spearman′s correlation between them showed negative correlation. The Spearman′s correlation showed a negative correlation between tongue-tie grades and severity of crowding. Conclusions: As the grade of tongue-tie increased, its association with Classes I and II malocclusion decreased. The lower grades of tongue-tie are associated with increased lower incisor crowding. Shorter, tight frenulums are more associated with maxillary constriction, anterior open bite, and spacing of the lower anteriors.

To investigate the prevalence and management of ankyloglossia for infants in Central Australia. Retrospective chart review consisting of a medical file audit of infants (n = 493) <2 years old diagnosed with ankyloglossia from January 2013 to December 2018 in the primary hospital in Central Australia. Patient characteristics, reason for diagnosis, reason for procedure and outcomes of procedures routinely recorded in the patient clinical files were recorded. The overall prevalence of ankyloglossia in this population was 10.2%. Frenotomy was performed in 97.9% of infants diagnosed with ankyloglossia. Infants with ankyloglossia were more likely to be male (58% vs 42%), diagnosed and managed with a frenotomy on the third day of life. Most ankyloglossia diagnoses were identified by a midwife (>92%). Most frenotomy procedures were completed by lactation consultants who were also midwives (99%) using blunt-ended scissors. More infants were classified with posterior ankyloglossia than anterior ankyloglossia (23% vs 15%). A frenotomy procedure resolved feeding issues in 54% of infants with ankyloglossia. The prevalence of ankyloglossia and rate of frenotomy procedures were high when compared to previous reports in the general population. Frenotomy for ankyloglossia in infants with breastfeeding difficulties was found to be effective in more than half of the reported sample, improving breastfeeding and decreasing maternal nipple pain. A standardised approach and validated screening or comprehensive assessment tool for the identification of ankyloglossia is indicated. Guidelines and training for relevant health professionals on non-surgical management of the functional limitations of ankyloglossia are also recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations: A short lingual frenulum and a lack of tone of the lingual and supra-hyoidal muscles could influence a OSA in a teenager, refractory to conventional treatment. The therapy is based on surgery and rehabilitation with polysomnographic surveillance. Comments: The aggravating factors were to be noted during the treatment. No article in the literature put this relationship into perspective. Conclusion: The results obtained were inconclusive. This line of research could interest the scientific community in order to guide the physiopathological knowledge of the disorder and to optimize the possibilities of therapeutic response in case functions.

Ankyloglossia or tongue tie is a congenital condition that results when the inferior lingual frenulum is too short and is attached to the tip of the tongue, limiting its normal movements. Ankyloglossia can lead to a range of problems such as difficulties in breast feeding, speech impediments, poor oral hygiene, malocclusion, inability in deglutition, thus being an undesired problem in normal life activity. Various techniques like scalpel, laser and electro-surgery have been performed in treating tongue tie.
