Background: Laboratory results are frequently abnormal in pregnant mothers. Abnormalities usually relate to pregnancy or associated complications. Hematological abnormalities and age in pregnancy may increase the likelihood for transfusion and mortality. Study Design and Methods: Hematological profiles and transfusion history of pregnant mothers presenting to a tertiary hospital, were evaluated over 2 years. Age, anemia, leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia were assessed for transfusion likelihood. Iron deficiency and coagulation were assessed in transfused patients. Anemia, leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and transfusion were assessed for mortality likelihood. Results: There were 12,889 pregnant mothers included. Mothers <19‐years‐old had the highest prevalence of anemia (31.5%) and proportion of transfusions (19%). The transfusion likelihood was increased in mothers with anemia (odds ratios [OR] = 6.41; confidence intervals at 95% [95% CI] 5.46–7.71), leukocytosis (OR = 2.35; 95% CI 2.00–2.76) or thrombocytopenia (OR = 2.71; 95% CI 2.21–3.33). Mothers with prolonged prothrombin times received twice as many blood products as their normal counterparts (p =.03) and those with iron deficiency anemia five times more blood products (p <.001). Increased likelihood for mortality was seen in patients with anemia (OR = 4.15, 95% CI 2.03–8.49), leukocytosis (OR = 2.68; 95% CI 1.19–6.04) and those receiving blood transfusion (OR = 3.6, 95% CI 1.75–7.47). Discussion: Adolescence, anemia, leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia expose mothers to a high risk for transfusion and/or mortality. These risk factors should promptly trigger management and referral of patients. Presenting hematological profiles are strong predictors of maternal outcome and transfusion risk. Various iron-containing medicaments, vitamins and dietary supplements are used or developed for treatment and prevention of the iron deficiency anemia which is very dangerous for human and may cause various disorders. From the other hand, blood losses, iron poor diet, microelements (co-factors) deficiency, metabolic failures, absorption problems, etc. can change the iron status and affect the health. These pharmaceuticals contain iron compounds in the ferrous and ferric states. It is known that ferrous salts are more suitable for the intestinal intake than ferric ones. On the other hand, pharmaceutically important ferritin analogues contain ferric hydrous oxides and appear to be effective for both injections and peroral administration. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy is a unique physical technique which allows one to study various iron-containing materials including pharmaceuticals. Therefore, this technique was applied to study iron-containing pharmaceuticals for the analysis of the iron state, identification of ferric and ferrous compounds, revealing some structural peculiarities and for detection of aging processes in relation to the iron compounds. This review considers the main results of a long experience in the study of iron-containing pharmaceuticals by Mössbauer spectroscopy with critical analysis that may be useful for pharmacists, biochemists, biophysicists, and physicians. • We constructed a deep learning-based convolutional neural network model. • The model detected endometrial micropolyps in women with chronic endometritis. • The model performance was at a similar level to experienced gynecologists. Chronic endometritis (CE) is a localized mucosal inflammatory disorder associated with female infertility of unknown etiology, endometriosis, tubal factors, repeated implantation failure, and recurrent pregnancy loss, along with atypical uterine bleeding and iron deficiency anemia. Diagnosis of CE has traditionally relied on endometrial biopsy and detection of CD138(+) endometrial stromal plasmacytes. To develop a less invasive diagnostic system for CE, we aimed to construct a deep learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) model for the automatic detection of endometrial micropolyps (EMiP), a fluid hysteroscopy (F-HSC) finding recognized as tiny protrusive lesions that are closely related to this disease. This is an in silico study using archival images of F-HSC performed at an infertility center in a private clinic. A total of 244 infertile women undergoing F-HSC on the days 6–12 of the menstrual cycle between April 2019 and December 2021 with histopathologically-confirmed CE with the aid of immunohistochemistry for CD138 were utilized. The archival F-HSC images of 208 women (78 with EMiP and 130 without EMiP) who met the inclusion criteria were finally subjected to analysis. Following preprocessing of the images, half a set was input into a CNN architecture for training, whereas the remaining images were utilized as the test set to evaluate the performance of the model, which was compared with that of the experienced gynecologists. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, precision, and F1-score of the CNN model-aided diagnosis were 93.6 %, 92.3 %, 92.8 %, 88.0 %, and 0.907, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of the CNN model-aided diagnosis (0.930) was at a similar level (p >.05) to the value of conventional diagnosis by three experienced gynecologists (0.927, 0.948, and 0.906). These findings indicate that our deep learning-based CNN is capable of recognizing EMiP in F-HSC images and holds promise for further development of the computer-aided diagnostic system for CE. • BDNF levels in fetal cord blood were found to be lower in babies of pregnant women with anemia compared to newborns of healthy pregnant women. • In addition, BDNF levels in cord blood were positively correlated with hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, iron, and ferritin. • The effects of BDNF levels on the newborn's Apgar score, BPD measurement, and birth weight are not clear. However, longer-term observation is required to better understand the effects of maternal iron deficiency anemia and BDNF on the nervous system. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of maternal iron deficiency anemia on the umbilical cord level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which plays a very important role in the central nervous system. Our research was planned as a quantitative, prospective, and analytical type of study. A total of 90 volunteers, term, singleton pregnant hospitalized in the Health Sciences University Ümraniye Training and Research Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic between September 2021 and August 2022 were included in this study. While 45 of these pregnants were pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia (hemoglobin ≤ 110 g/L and serum ferritin level ≤ 12 μg/L), 45 cases were in the control group without iron deficiency anemia (hemoglobin > 110 g/L, serum ferritin > 12 μg/L). When pregnant were admitted to the hospital, blood samples were taken to analyze hemoglobin, mean cell volume (MCV), iron, unsaturated iron binding capacity, total iron binding capacity, serum ferritin, transferrin, and CRP levels. Also, we noted the maternal age, gravida, parity, birth weight, head circumference, type of birth, 1. minute Apgar score, and 5. minute Apgar score. During the delivery; after the umbilical cord had been clamped and cut, we took 5 cc of umbilical cord blood. Then, we put it in the serum-separating laboratory tubes. After we centrifuged these blood samples, we put the serum parts in the Eppendorf tubes to be stored at −80 degrees Celsius. At the end of the study, we calculated the level of BDNF using special human brain-derived neurotrophic factor ELISA kits. The umbilical cord BDNF levels of the maternal iron deficiency anemia group and the control group were compared statistically. When we evaluated the fetal umbilical cord BDNF values of 90 participants, the median value BDNF in the babies of 45 anemic mothers was 3.16 (IQR 0.73), and the median BDNF value of the babies of 45 healthy mothers was 5.37 (IQR 1.02). We found a statistical difference between BDNF and hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, and iron values between these two groups. In conclusion, the BDNF value of the babies of healthy individuals is higher than that of anemic individuals. • Qualitative research exploring anaemia and supplemental iron in pregnancy. • Gastro-intestinal side-effects and forgetfulness negatively impact compliance. • Improvement in symptoms, routine and alternate day dosing all aid compliance. • Patient knowledge on possible negative sequelae of anaemia was limited. The objective of this study was to understand the experience of iron deficiency anaemia requiring oral iron in pregnancy and the factors affecting compliance with oral iron supplementation. Participants' understanding regarding the possible consequences of anaemia in pregnancy was also explored. Feedback on a proposed randomised controlled trial of daily versus alternate day oral iron in pregnancy was sought. Following ethical approval, fourteen semi-structured one-to-one interviews were carried out using an interview tool with open-ended questions. Recruitment was carried out through social media and from an antenatal out-patient setting. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed thematically. Fatigue emerged as a predominant and troubling symptom. Awareness was often highlighted through friends/family and from healthcare professionals, particularly in first pregnancies. Knowledge surrounding the potential short-term and long-term adverse consequences of untreated anaemia however was limited. Gastro-intestinal side-effects, a previous experience of poor tolerance and forgetfulness all negatively impacted compliance with oral iron supplementation in pregnancy. Routine, a perceived improvement in fatigue with supplementation and reduced dose frequency recurred as themes which positively affected compliance. Pregnancy as a motivating factor recurred as a theme in analysis. The role of diet was felt to be important. Knowledge of iron-rich foods and absorption aids and inhibitors was good, but practice on optimal ingestion of oral iron supplementation varied. Feedback on trial acceptability was positive with the benefit of extra supportive care noted. Incorporating study visits with routine care was advised in view of time constraints. This area of research was perceived as important. In order to successfully reduce the rates of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy, it is crucial that all factors affecting compliance with oral iron are considered. Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a global health challenge, especially affecting females and children. We aimed to conduct an umbrella systematic review of available evidence on IDA's prevalence in Iranian pregnant women and children. Methods: We searched the Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for articles published by April 2023. Meta-analyses investigating the status of IDA in Iran were included. The findings of seven meta-analyses comprising 189,627 pregnant women with a mean age of 26 and 5,890 children under six years old were included in this study. The methodological quality of each study was evaluated with the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR2) instrument. Results: We estimated the prevalence of IDA at 15.71% in pregnant women and 19.91% in young children. According to our subgroup analysis of pregnant women, IDA's prevalence in urban and rural regions was 16.32% and 12.75%; in the eastern, western, central, southern, and northern regions of Iran, it was estimated at 17.8%, 7.97%, 19.97%, 13.45%, and 17.82%, respectively. Conclusion: IDA is common in young children and pregnant females and is a significant public health concern in Iran. The present umbrella review results estimated that Iran is in the mild level of IDA prevalence based on WHO classification. However, due to sanctions and high inflation in Iran, the prevalence of anemia is expected to increase in recent years. Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a prevalent hematological complication associated with gastrointestinal (GI) cancers due to an increased loss of iron and decreased iron absorption. The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate the use of parenteral iron to treat IDA in patients with GI cancer. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE, CINHAL and Scopus were searched from January 1, 2010 to September 29, 2023 with no language restrictions. We excluded editorials, case reports, abstracts, conference papers, and poster presentations. Studies were included if they discussed IDA, GI neoplasms, use of iron supplementation (with or without erythropoietin-stimulating agents [ESAs]), defined anemia and had an adult patient population. We assessed the efficacy of parenteral iron in comparison to other iron supplementation methods when treating IDA in patients with GI cancer. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2 (RoB 2) and the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) assessment tools were used to assess the quality of the included studies. Moreover, the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organization data collection form was used to collect pertinent study information. Results: Our search yielded 3,969 studies across all databases. Twenty-one studies were included (6 randomized control trials; 15 non-randomized studies). Of the 15 studies evaluating hemoglobin (Hb) response, seven studies found an increase in Hb levels when patients were treated with IV iron. The 14 studies evaluating red blood cell (RBC) transfusion rates found conflicting differences in RBC transfusion needs when treated with IV iron. Studies analyzing health related outcomes typically found an increase in quality of life and decreased post-operative complications. Discussion: This review demonstrates improved outcomes of IDA in patients with GI cancer treated with IV iron instead of other iron supplementation methods. Background: Patients with iron deficiency anemia are treated with iron preparations, but gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting occur frequently. These symptoms may negatively affect the quality of life and work productivity in patients with iron deficiency anemia. This study assessed the impact of nausea and vomiting on the quality of life and work productivity of patients taking iron preparations for heavy menstrual bleeding or anemia. Methods: An online survey was conducted among patients taking iron preparations for heavy menstrual bleeding or anemia. Demographic data and information about medication use and the health condition were collected. The patients were asked to answer the 5-level EQ-5D version, and work productivity and activity impairment questionnaires. The outcomes were reported by patients in the presences of nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting. The association with the 5-level EQ-5D version utility score for the severity and frequency of the symptoms were also assessed. Results: A total of 385 patients were enrolled, and 96 were patients with nausea or vomiting, of which 94 were with nausea and 27 were with vomiting. The 5-level EQ-5D version utility scores for the patients with nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting were significantly lower than those of the patients without these symptoms (p < 0.001 for each). The 5-level EQ-5D version utility score was correlated with the severity of nausea and the frequency of vomiting per day (p < 0.001 for each). As for the work productivity and activity impairment, the presenteeism, the overall work impairment, and the activity impairment of the patients with nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting were significantly higher than those without these symptoms (p < 0.001 for each). The absenteeism was slightly higher trend was observed, but not significant. Conclusion: Patients taking iron preparations who have nausea or vomiting experience a significant burden in terms of poorer quality of life and higher work productivity impairment. Objective To systematically evaluate the Influencing factors of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in 0-5 years old children in China. Methods The relevant studies published in China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI),VIP,Wanfang Data, SinoMed, The Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science databases and other databases were systematically searched. The search time limit was from the establishment of the database to March 2023. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted the relevant data from the included studies, and assessed the risk of bias. RevMan 5. 4 software was used for Meta-analysis. Results A total of 20 studies involving 55 388 children were included, including 17 741 cases of IDA. The results of meta-analysis showed that 6 to 12 months old (OR=2. 74,95%CI 1. 80-4. 17),male children (OR=1. 53,95%CI 1. 28-1. 83),prematurity (OR=4. 67,95%CI 1. 96-11. 15),low maternal education (OR=2. 16,95%CI 1. 30-3. 57),maternal anemia during pregnancy (OR=3. 05,95%CI 2. 54-3. 66),especially maternal anemia in the third trimester (OR=4. 64,95%CI 3. 53-6. 10),and low household income (OR=1. 24,95%CI 1. 16-1. 33) were risk factors for IDA,and 4 to 6 months of age to add complementary food (OR=0. 19,95%CI 0. 10-0. 39),adding iron-rich complementary foods (OR=0. 56,95%CI 0. 41-0. 75) were protective factor for IDA in 0-5 years old children. Acetylsalicylic acid or aspirin is the most commonly used drug in the world and is taken daily by millions of people. There is increasing evidence that chronic administration of low-dose aspirin of about 75–100 mg/day can cause iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in the absence of major gastric bleeding; this is found in a large number of about 20% otherwise healthy elderly (>65 years) individuals. The mechanisms of the cause of IDA in this category of individuals are still largely unknown. Evidence is presented suggesting that a likely cause of IDA in this category of aspirin users is the chelation activity and increased excretion of iron caused by aspirin chelating metabolites (ACMs). It is estimated that 90% of oral aspirin is metabolized into about 70% of the ACMs salicyluric acid, salicylic acid, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid. All ACMs have a high affinity for binding iron and ability to mobilize iron from different iron pools, causing an overall net increase in iron excretion and altering iron balance. Interestingly, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid has been previously tested in iron-loaded thalassaemia patients, leading to substantial increases in iron excretion. The daily administration of low-dose aspirin for long-term periods is likely to enhance the overall iron excretion in small increments each time due to the combined iron mobilization effect of the ACM. In particular, IDA is likely to occur mainly in populations such as elderly vegetarian adults with meals low in iron content. Furthermore, IDA may be exacerbated by the combinations of ACM with other dietary components, which can prevent iron absorption and enhance iron excretion. Overall, aspirin is acting as a chelating pro-drug similar to dexrazoxane, and the ACM as combination chelation therapy. Iron balance, pharmacological, and other studies on the interaction of iron and aspirin, as well as ACM, are likely to shed more light on the mechanism of IDA. Similar mechanisms of iron chelation through ACM may also be implicated in patient improvements observed in cancer, neurodegenerative, and other disease categories when treated long-term with daily aspirin. In particular, the role of aspirin and ACM in iron metabolism and free radical pathology includes ferroptosis, and may identify other missing links in the therapeutic effects of aspirin in many more diseases. It is suggested that aspirin is the first non-chelating drug described to cause IDA through its ACM metabolites. The therapeutic, pharmacological, toxicological and other implications of aspirin are incomplete without taking into consideration the iron binding and other effects of the ACM. Background: Anemia remains a major global public health issue, affecting around 24.8% of the world's population in both developing and developed countries. Pregnant women in developing countries are particularly susceptible, with 38.2% affected worldwide. Anemia is also a major contributor to maternal mortality, with 510,000 maternal deaths globally, of which 20% occur in developing countries and are related to anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent form, impacting 1.3 to 2.2 billion individuals, with 50% being women of reproductive age. Aim: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anemia in pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at Hargeisa Group Hospital (HGH), Somaliland. Methods: A cross-sectional study included 360 pregnant women, who sought ANC at HGH from July 15 to August 6, 2023. The study subjects were selected using systematic random sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and participants' current medical charts, including hemoglobin levels. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 20). Results: The study revealed an overall prevalence of anemia among pregnant women at 50.6% (95% CI: 45.40 − 55.72%). Anemia severity was categorized as mild (33.0%), moderate (54.9%), and severe (12.1%). Factors statistically associated with anemia included gestational age in the third trimester (AOR = 3.248, 95% CI: 1.491–7.074), lack of ANC visits (AOR = 6.828, 95% CI: 1.966–23.721), and absence of iron supplementation (AOR = 29.588, 95% CI: 2.922–299.713). Notably, a higher consumption of meat per week was associated with a reduced risk of anemia (AOR = 0.198, 95% CI: 0.104–0.379). Conclusion: The study underscores the severity of anemia in pregnant women within the range considered as severe public health problem by WHO. It is crucial to emphasize effective prenatal care, improve dietary practices, and promote the provision of iron supplements. Globally, iron deficiency reigns as the most prevalent nutritional disorder, with anemia disproportionately impacting women of childbearing age. Despite the effectiveness of existing treatments, like iron supplements, their side effects remain a concern. This study explores the potential of grape syrup (GS), a functional iron‐rich food, to modulate markers of iron‐deficient anemia in women. A randomized, double‐blind study explored the impact of GS on iron deficiency anemia markers in 130 women. Participants were allocated to intervention or placebo groups. For 4 weeks, the intervention group received a daily 50 mg ferrous sulfate tablet alongside 10 cc of GS thrice daily. The placebo group received a 50 mg ferrous sulfate tablet with a 10 cc placebo syrup thrice daily. Before and after the intervention, key markers like red blood cell count (RBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), ferritin, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), and serum iron were assessed. Notably, both Hb and Hct levels were significantly higher in the GS group (p < .05). Additionally, RBC and MCV values showed significant improvement compared to the placebo group (p < .05). However, no significant difference was observed for other iron deficiency markers like serum iron, ferritin, and TIBC (p > .05). Purpose: About 40% of pregnant women are anemic and at an increased risk for complications. We examined the efficacy of inpatient anemia workup and treatment in pregnant women diagnosed with moderate-severe anemia (hemoglobin < 10 mg/dL), during hospitalization in the late second-trimester and third-trimester. Methods: This retrospective study, conducted between March 2020 and November 2022, included women at ≥ 24 gestational weeks who were hospitalized due to various indications and diagnosed with anemia (hemoglobin < 10 mg/dL). The study group comprised women who underwent an inpatient anemia workup and initiation of anemia treatment. The comparison group comprised women who did not undergo an inpatient anemia investigation. The primary outcome was the rate of pre-delivery hemoglobin > 11 g/dL. Results: The most frequent etiology of anemia in the study group (n = 188) was iron-deficiency anemia (30.2%), followed by mixed anemia of iron, folate and vitamin-B12 deficiencies (20.7%). In the study vs. the comparison group (n = 179), the rate of pre-delivery hemoglobin > 11 g/dL was higher, and the increase in hemoglobin from intervention to delivery was greater. The ideal timing for anemia intervention for maximizing the increase in pre-delivery hemoglobin was 6-weeks or more prior to delivery. The rates of postpartum hemorrhage and blood transfusions were similar. The rate of postpartum hemoglobin < 10 g/dL was lower in the study than the comparison group. Conclusion: Inpatient anemia investigation and treatment resulted in higher peri-delivery hemoglobin. In women randomly diagnosed with anemia at hospitalization, the rate of pre-delivery hemoglobin > 11 g/dL was increased among those who underwent a simple anemia investigation and treatment initiation. Background Acute gastrointestinal bleeding (AGIB) is common in older patients but the use of iron in this context remains understudied. Aims This study aimed to evaluate prospectively the efficacy of ferric carboxymaltose to treat anaemia in older patients after AGIB. Methods This randomised double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted in 10 French centres. Eligible patients were 65 years or more, had controlled upper or lower gastrointestinal bleeding and a haemoglobin level of 9–11 g/dl. Patients were randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, to receive either one intravenous iron injection of ferric carboxymaltose or one injection of saline solution. The primary endpoint was the difference in haemoglobin level between day 0 and day 42. Secondary endpoints were treatment-emergent adverse events, serious adverse events, rehospitalisation and improvement of quality of life (QOL) at day 180. Results From January 2013 to January 2017, 59 patients were included. The median age of patients was 81.9 [75.8, 87.3] years. At day 42, a significant difference in haemoglobin level increase was observed (2.49 g/dl in the ferric carboxymaltose group vs. 1.56 g/dl in the placebo group, P  = 0.02). At day 180, QOL, measured on European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30, improved by 10.5 points in the ferric carboxymaltose group and by 8.2 points in the placebo group (P  = 0.56). Rates of adverse events and rehospitalisation were similar in the two groups. Objective: Obesity and iron deficiency, which are public health problems that maintain their prevalence and for which the adolescent population is particularly at risk, may have important clinical consequences. This study aimed to assess the iron parameters and blood vitamin B12 levels in obese adolescents and identify the contributing variables to the development of anemia. Material and Methods: The present study involved a retrospective evaluation of 260 children (130 obese-130 control) who were admitted to the Ankara Children's Haematology Oncology Training and Research Hospital, Pediatric Outpatient Clinics, between March 2013 and May 2015. Children aged 12 to 18 years without acute or chronic illnesses and body mass index (BMI) above the 95th percentile for age and gender were required for inclusion in the study group. Data from patient files were used to collect information on physical examination findings, sociodemographic characteristics, daily dietary status, and level of physical activity. All patients had evaluations for CRP, iron parameters, vitamin B12, and complete blood count. Results: The study revealed that the obese group had significantly higher serum ferritin levels (p=0.002) and lower serum iron and vitamin B12 levels (p=0.036 and 0.047, respectively) as compared to the control group. In the obese population, elevated BMI has been demonstrated to be correlated with elevated CRP and ferritin levels. Conclusion: Obesity's chronic inflammation state may lead inflammatory pathophysiological pathways to activate resulting in iron deficiency and other nutritional deficiencies. Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is common in children. Treatment usually consists of oral iron therapy and, if severe, inpatient hospitalisation with blood transfusion. Providers may also undertake an echocardiogram, depending on availability and the severity of anaemia. A male toddler with nutritional IDA, haemoglobin of 1.7 g/dL (the lowest level in the literature) and hypertension had left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) on the initial echocardiogram. He was managed acutely with judicious blood transfusion, followed by oral iron supplementation and anti-hypertensive medication at discharge. Repeat echocardiogram a month later demonstrated slight improvement of the LVH but the hypertension persisted at follow-up 6 months later. There was complete resolution of the findings a year later. In chronic nutritional IDA, there can be structural cardiac changes which can affect the acute management and requires close follow-up. It is important to use echocardiography in such severe cases. Iron deficiency anemia is a public health problem among adolescents that could be addressed by weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS). The Ethiopian government piloted weekly IFAS in schools, where its effectiveness depends on compliance. We assessed the determinants of compliance with the weekly IFAS in Ethiopia. A school-based survey was conducted in 506 adolescent girls on weekly IFAS. Compliance was considered when girls reported WIFAS for at least three months without discontinuation. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression models were modeled, with odds ratios reported. Out of 506, 25.8% had limited access to educational resources, and 79.4% had no information on IFAS. Among these, 47.9% (95% CI: 45.5–49.9%) had poor compliance with weekly IFAS. Non-compliance was mainly due to school absenteeism (55.9%). Important predictors of poor compliance were adolescent girls' marital status (AOR = 5.21; 1.55–17.6), academic standing (AOR = 4.37; 2.20–8.70), family income (AOR = 1.85; 1.09–3.15), access to health education materials (AOR = 1.57; 1.02–2.40), problems with IFAS (AOR = 2.44; 1.26–4.74), a discouraging home environment for the program (AOR = 2.27; 1.54–3.34), and a lack of knowledge of the IFAS program (AOR = 1.40; 0.97–2.03). Purpose: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional anemia in the world and a pervasive health problem, especially in developing countries. Children under two years of age are more prone to be affected by IDA. The best strategy to prevent and treat IDA is to use iron supplements. This study aims to examine the factors associated with noncompliance (such as non-utilization or inconsistent usage) of iron drop supplementation among infants between 6 and 24 months old. Design/methodology/approach: Online databases (PubMed, Scopus and SID) were searched to retrieve relevant articles published from inception up to July 2023. Among the 2,177 articles detected, after removing duplicate and irrelevant titles, 21 cross-sectional studies that met the authors' inclusion criteria were included. Screening for articles and data extraction were conducted separately by two researchers. Findings: The findings suggest that some factors related to mothers, such as education, knowledge, attitude and performance; some factors associated with child such as child's gastrointestinal and dental complications; taste and smell of iron drops; and birth order and gender are the main determinants of adherence to iron supplementation. Originality/value: It can be proposed that the most significant factors affecting the feeding of iron drops to children under the age of two include: the level of mother's awareness, socio-economic status of the household and the occurrence of digestive complications following the supplementation. Given these observations, adopting proper policies toward improving the nutritional awareness of mothers and producing iron supplements with minimal side effects seems crucial. Objective To identify the TMPRSS6 gene variants in Mexican patients with iron treatment refractoriness, to describe hematological and iron profile parameters, and to use bioinformatic prediction and protein modeling tools to assess a possible biological impact for the detected missense variants. Methods Nineteen patients referred with iron treatment refractoriness were studied. Peripheral blood was collected to determine hematic cytometry, iron profile, hemoglobin electrophoresis, and quantification. Molecular screening was carried out for exons 15 through 18 of the TMPRSS6 gene by Sanger sequencing and for frequent thalassemia variants by amplification-refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gap-PCR. The biological impact of the detected missense variants was assessed using bioinformatic prediction and protein modeling tools. Results We found 5 genetic variants in the matriptase-2 catalytic domain: 1 at intron-15/exon-16 junction (rs60484081) and 4 exonic, 3 missense (rs377054987, p.Gly626Asp; rs1384127820, p.Ser672Thr; rs855791, p.Val727Ala) and 1 synonymous (rs2235321, p.Tyr730=), with frequencies ranging from 0.18 to 0.53. No significant differences were observed in the hematological parameters or iron profile, considering type and number of variants. Bioinformatic predictions suggested a possible biological impact only for rs377054987. Conclusions The TMPRSS6 variants observed in Mexican patients with oral iron treatment refractoriness have high frequencies; nevertheless, their relationship with hematological and iron profile parameters needs further research. The supply and control of iron is essential for all cells and vital for many physiological processes. All functions and activities of iron are expressed in conjunction with iron-binding molecules. For example, natural chelators such as transferrin and chelator–iron complexes such as haem play major roles in iron metabolism and human physiology. Similarly, the mainstay treatments of the most common diseases of iron metabolism, namely iron deficiency anaemia and iron overload, involve many iron–chelator complexes and the iron-chelating drugs deferiprone (L1), deferoxamine (DF) and deferasirox. Endogenous chelators such as citric acid and glutathione and exogenous chelators such as ascorbic acid also play important roles in iron metabolism and iron homeostasis. Recent advances in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia with effective iron complexes such as the ferric iron tri-maltol complex (feraccru or accrufer) and the effective treatment of transfusional iron overload using L1 and L1/DF combinations have decreased associated mortality and morbidity and also improved the quality of life of millions of patients. Many other chelating drugs such as ciclopirox, dexrazoxane and EDTA are used daily by millions of patients in other diseases. Similarly, many other drugs or their metabolites with iron-chelation capacity such as hydroxyurea, tetracyclines, anthracyclines and aspirin, as well as dietary molecules such as gallic acid, caffeic acid, quercetin, ellagic acid, maltol and many other phytochelators, are known to interact with iron and affect iron metabolism and related diseases. Different interactions are also observed in the presence of essential, xenobiotic, diagnostic and theranostic metal ions competing with iron. Clinical trials using L1 in Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as HIV and other infections, cancer, diabetic nephropathy and anaemia of inflammation, highlight the importance of chelation therapy in many other clinical conditions. The proposed use of iron chelators for modulating ferroptosis signifies a new era in the design of new therapeutic chelation strategies in many other diseases. The introduction of artificial intelligence guidance for optimal chelation therapeutic outcomes in personalised medicine is expected to increase further the impact of chelation in medicine, as well as the survival and quality of life of millions of patients with iron metabolic disorders and also other diseases. Background: Anemia during pregnancy is a common condition where there is a decrease in the number of red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood. Most common hematologic abnormality in pregnancy is anemia. This can occur due to a variety of factors, including increased blood volume during pregnancy, inadequate intake of iron and other nutrients, or conditions such as iron deficiency anemia or Vitamin B12 deficiency mainly. Material and Methods: A prospective study was conducted among 1781 pregnant women who attended antenatal clinic between March 2023 to February 2024 in a tertiary care hospital at whose blood samples and socio-demographic information were collected. Hemoglobin concentration, blood indices, WBC & RBC counts were determined by automated hematology cell counter. Grading was done according to WHO criteria and morphological typing was done on the basis of peripheral blood smear examination. Result: A high prevalence (86%) of anemia was observed among 1781 pregnant women commonly seen in younger age group (20-30 years). Factors such as age at marriage, age at first childbirth, gravida, residence and socioeconomic status were found to be significant. According to blood indices and peripheral blood smear analysis hypochromic microcytic anemia (50.2 %) was the commonest morphological type of anemia followed by normochromic normocytic anemia (35.2 %). Iron deficiency anemia was the most common cause of anemia during pregnancy. Conclusion: The present study concluded that a well-balanced diet rich in iron, vitamins, and minerals along with regular prenatal check-ups should be implemented to reduce the prevalence of anemia. Simple Summary: Traditional treatment protocols for piglets suffering from iron deficiency anaemia are currently lacking from both cost, labour and welfare perspectives. Dietary iron supplements during the suckling phase are problematic due to variable habituation to creep feed consumption. Maternal flavour conditioning may resolve this variability. This study evaluated the role of anise flavoured, iron supplemented creep, with or without maternal anise conditioning on the iron status and growth performance of piglets. Anise flavoured, iron supplemented creep achieved comparable haemoglobin and body weight status to groups receiving an iron injection. These findings merit further evaluation of iron-fortified creep feed as a supplementary strategy for piglets. Iron injections are vital but imperfect against iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). This experiment explored the effects on piglets of maternal flavour conditioning and the voluntary intake of anise flavoured, iron-supplemented creep feed compared with iron injections. The experiment was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement: ±maternal exposure to dietary anise flavour and ±intramuscular injections of piglets. Twenty-three sows and their litters (242 piglets) were randomly allocated to one of four treatments (n = 5 or 6 per treatment): no flavour plus no injection (NF + NI); no flavour plus iron injection (NF + I); flavour plus no injection (F + NI); and flavour plus iron injection (F + I). All piglets could access anise flavoured, iron-supplemented creep feed (organic and inorganic forms) from D2 of birth. Sow feed intake and milk anethole concentration, piglet body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG), creep feed disappearance, piglet behavioural time budgets, and piglet blood glucose and haemoglobin concentrations were determined. Over the four-week study, the only significant differences found were that iron-injected piglets had reduced blood glucose (p = 0.036) on D14 and that maternal flavour provision increased the frequency of piglet creep feed interaction (p = 0.023) and decreased the frequency of suckling events (p = 0.009). In summary, maternal flavour conditioning reduced piglet creep feed neophobia without influencing consumption. The supplementation of creep feed with iron and anise flavour to piglets under the conditions of this trial was effective in preventing IDA, regardless of exposure to maternal flavouring conditioning. Summary: We assessed the diagnostic potential of erythroferrone as a biomarker for iron homeostasis comparing iron deficiency cases with anaemia of inflammation and controls. The dysregulation of the hepcidin axis was observed by Latour et al. in a mouse model of malarial anaemia induced by prolonged Plasmodium infection leading to increased erythroferrone concentrations. In line with that, we found significantly higher erythroferrone levels in cases with malaria and anaemia in an African population, compared to asymptomatic controls. Therefore, our findings extend the previous ones of the mouse model, suggesting also a dysregulation of the hepcidin axis in humans, which should be further corroborated in prospective studies and may lay the basis for the development of improved treatment strategies according to ERFE concentrations in such patients. Celiac disease is a growing global public health concern. This epidemiological study is aimed at determining the prevalence of celiac disease in Kermanshah, Western Iran, from 2019 to 2021, as well as the frequency of gastrointestinal and nongastrointestinal manifestations associated with the disease. In this cross-sectional study, the medical records of all patients with a confirmed diagnosis of celiac disease between 2019 and 2021 were reviewed. The average population during the study period was 2,058,545. A researcher-developed checklist was used as the data collection tool, and descriptive statistics were employed for data analysis. During the study period, there were 113 patients diagnosed with celiac disease, with a mean age of 29.1 ± 16.6 years. The three-year prevalence of celiac disease was 5.49 (95% CI: 5.17-5.82) per 100,000 population. Among these patients, 70% (n = 78) was female. The most common gastrointestinal manifestations of the disease were abdominal pain (77.8%), constipation (59.3%), and diarrhea (54.9%). Iron-deficiency anemia (64.6%) and vitamin D3 deficiency (46.1%) were the most common nongastrointestinal manifestations. Growth retardation was observed in 39.0% of patients. This study demonstrated a higher prevalence of celiac disease in Kermanshah compared to global statistics. Given the association of celiac disease with other conditions such as diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, growth retardation, and iron-deficiency anemia, healthcare providers should consider screening patients for celiac disease. Background. Anemia, a global health concern, affects one-fourth of the global population, particularly women. In Indonesia, its prevalence is 23.7%, with 32.0% among 15-24 year-olds. Factors include poor nutrition, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, inherited disorders, and inadequate healthcare access. This study aimed to investigate anemia prevalence and its etiology among medical students from Jakarta. Methods. This study was a descriptive research with a cross-sectional approach. Undergraduate students aged 18–23 years old were selected and consented to participate by a consecutive nonrandom sampling methods. Laboratory blood data were evaluated (including Hb, MCV, MCH, HbA2, and ferritin levels) and DNA was isolated to confirm the type of thalassemia carrier. Results. In total, 140 medical students, mainly female, were recruited. Anemia was found in 13.6% (11.4% had low MCV and/or MCH), and 16.5% had low MCV and/or MCH without anemia. Hb electrophoresis revealed high HbA2 values, suggesting the HbE variant (2.1%), and β-thalassemia carrier (0.7%). DNA analysis confirmed the cd26 mutation and heterozygous IVS1nt5. Among those without anemia, 5% had α-deletion, while in the group with anemia, 1.4% had α-deletion (with coexistent IDA), 3.6% had α-deletion, and 0.7% had β-mutation. Conclusion. DNA analysis can identify specific mutations associated with alpha-thalassemia, distinguishing between iron deficiency anemia and the alpha-thalassemia trait. Thalassemia screening should involve low MCV and/or MCH values as the first step (stage 1), followed by Hb analysis (stage 2) and DNA analysis (stage 3). In common areas, a combination of Hb and DNA testing is best. Protein synthesis is a highly energy-consuming process that is downregulated in response to many environmental stresses or adverse conditions. Studies in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae have shown that bulk translation is inhibited during adaptation to iron deficiency, which is consistent with its requirement for ribosome biogenesis and recycling. Although iron deficiency anemia is the most common human nutritional disorder, how iron modulates translation in mammals is poorly understood. Studies during erythropoiesis have shown that iron bioavailability is coordinated with globin synthesis via bulk translation regulation. However, little is known about the control of translation during iron limitation in other tissues. Here, we investigated how iron depletion affects protein synthesis in human osteosarcoma U-2 OS cells. By adding an extracellular iron chelator, we observed that iron deficiency limits cell proliferation, induces autophagy, and decreases the global rate of protein synthesis. Analysis of specific molecular markers indicates that the inhibition of bulk translation upon iron limitation occurs through the eukaryotic initiation factor eIF2α and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathways. In contrast to other environmental and nutritional stresses, iron depletion does not trigger the assembly of messenger ribonucleoprotein stress granules, which typically form upon polysome disassembly. Objectives: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common type of anemia in childhood and it leads to a hypercoagulable state. We investigated endogenous thrombin production in platelet‐poor plasma before and after oral iron replacement in children with IDA using the thrombin generation assay (TGA). Methods: A total of 72 children diagnosed with IDA (IDA group) and 60 healthy children (control group) were included in the study. Blood samples were collected from the patients before and 1 month after oral iron replacement. TGA parameters [lag time, time to peak, peak height, endogenous thrombin potential (ETP)] were studied. Results: In the IDA group, the lag time and time to peak decreased by 8.3% and 10.6%, respectively, and the endogenous thrombin potential (ETP) and peak height both increased by 30% compared to those of the control group. Compared to the values before iron replacement, 1 month after iron replacement, the lag time and time to peak increased by 8.7% and 5%, respectively, and the ETP and peak height decreased by 31% and 31.3%, respectively, and became similar to those of the control group. Conclusion: Children with IDA have increased endogenous thrombin production in platelet‐poor plasma and a tendency for hypercoagulability. Animal flesh foods are rich in bioavailable iron but infrequently consumed by young children. We aimed to determine whether flesh food intake was associated with iron and anaemia status among 585 Malawian infants enroled in a 6‐month egg‐feeding trial. The percentage of days of small fish, large fish and meat consumption were assessed through weekly 7‐day animal‐source food screeners. Grams of intake were assessed through 24‐h recalls conducted at 6–9, 9–12 and 12–15 months of age. Plasma ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) and haemoglobin concentrations were measured at 6–9 and 12–15 months of age. Iron biomarkers were adjusted for inflammation during analysis. At enrolment, each flesh food category was consumed by <5% of children in the past 24 h. Over the next 6 months, small fish, large fish and meat were consumed on 25%, 8% and 6% of days, respectively, with mean usual intakes of <5 g/day. More frequent small fish consumption was associated with lower sTfR (geometric mean ratio [95% CI]: 0.98 mg/L [0.96, 1.00] per 10 percentage point difference) but not ferritin (1.03 µg/L [0.98, 1.07]) or haemoglobin (1.01 g/dL [1.00, 1.01]). Large fish consumption was associated with higher anaemia (prevalence ratio [95% CI]: 1.09 [1.01, 1.19]) and lower iron deficiency (0.96 [0.93, 1.00]) prevalence. Gram intakes of flesh food categories were not associated with any iron or anaemia indicators. Small fish were a primary contributor to flesh food intake in this cohort of Malawian children, although usual portions were small. Fish was associated with modest improvements to iron status, but meat was too infrequent to be associated with anaemia and iron deficiency. Key messages: Small fish was the most frequently consumed flesh food among young children: 4% at enrolment and 40% at the 6‐month follow‐up. On average, children consumed small fish once every 4 days.Despite small usual portions of about 5 g/day, frequent consumption of small fish was associated with moderate improvements in iron status.Large fish consumption was associated with lower iron deficiency but not with mean plasma ferritin or sTfR. Meat was infrequently consumed and not associated with any iron or anaemia measures.Reducing the burden of iron deficiency among young Malawian children may require provision of supplemental dietary iron, improved complementary feeding practices, addressing underlying barriers to flesh food consumption and controlling inflammation and infectious diseases. Introduction: Rapunzel syndrome is a very rare form of trichobezoar. It is strongly linked to psychiatric conditions; trichotillomania and trichophagia. These conditions in the pediatric population point to the presence of childhood stressors like child neglect, abuse, etc. This case report highlights that child neglect may be an underlying contributing factor in selected cases of Rapunzel syndrome. Hence, a multidisciplinary approach should be sought in all cases of Rapunzel syndrome, catering to the emotional and psychological needs of the pediatric population. Case presentation: A 7-year-old girl from a low socioeconomic background presented with periorbital and facial swelling, abdominal distension, and pallor. On physical examination, she showed bilateral pitting edema and a distended abdomen with poor overall hygienic condition. Her family history was positive for Wilson's disease. Lab investigations highlighted iron deficiency anemia (Hb 8.2 g/dL), with normal liver function. Ultrasound demonstrated ascites, liver changes, and pleural effusion. The work-up for Wilson's disease was unremarkable. During the hospital course, her abdominal distention lessened; a non-tender epigastric mass (4 × 5 cm) was thus discovered. An abdominal X-ray revealed an entangled mass outlining the gastric shadow. Her parents also revealed a history of trichophagia. Suspecting a large trichobezoar, a laparotomy was performed. After the midline incision, the stomach was opened anteriorly between stay sutures along the curvature. It delivered a large trichobezoar, 65 cm in length extending up to the proximal jejunum. Rapunzel syndrome diagnosis was finally established. Conclusion: This unique presentation emphasizes the need to consider this rare etiology, even with unusual clinical histories especially with a history of child neglect, while collaborative surgical interventions facilitate successful outcomes. Intravenous (IV) iron-carbohydrate complexes are widely used nanoparticles (NPs) to treat iron deficiency anaemia, often associated with medical conditions such as chronic kidney disease, heart failure and various inflammatory conditions. Even though a plethora of physicochemical characterisation data and clinical studies are available for these products, evidence-based correlation between physicochemical properties of iron-carbohydrate complexes and clinical outcome has not fully been elucidated yet. Studies on other metal oxide NPs suggest that early interactions between NPs and blood upon IV injection are key to understanding how differences in physicochemical characteristics of iron-carbohydrate complexes cause variance in clinical outcomes. We therefore investigated the core-ligand structure of two clinically relevant iron-carbohydrate complexes, iron sucrose (IS) and ferric carboxymaltose (FCM), and their interactions with two structurally different human plasma proteins, human serum albumin (HSA) and fibrinogen, using a combination of cryo-scanning transmission electron microscopy (cryo-STEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Using this orthogonal approach, we defined the nano-structure, individual building blocks and surface morphology for IS and FCM. Importantly, we revealed significant differences in the surface morphology of the iron-carbohydrate complexes. FCM shows a localised carbohydrate shell around its core, in contrast to IS, which is characterised by a diffuse and dynamic layer of carbohydrate ligand surrounding its core. We hypothesised that such differences in carbohydrate morphology determine the interaction between iron-carbohydrate complexes and proteins and therefore investigated the NPs in the presence of HSA and fibrinogen. Intriguingly, IS showed significant interaction with HSA and fibrinogen, forming NP-protein clusters, while FCM only showed significant interaction with fibrinogen. We postulate that these differences could influence bio-response of the two formulations and their clinical outcome. Background: India has a substantially high burden of postpartum anemia (PPA). Several countries have guidelines regarding screening, diagnosis, and management of PPA. However, different modalities of treatment are followed in clinical practice, and consensus on management of PPA is lacking among the Indian practitioners. Aim: To review the current evidence and come to a consensus regarding definition, classification, appropriate time of screening and diagnosis, along with management of PPA, with specific reference to usage of ferric carboxymaltose (FCM). Methodology: The core committee comprised of 11 obstetricians. Using the modified Delphi method, eight statements were created, discussed, and ranked by the obstetricians and recommendations were recorded. Statements were ranked on a 9-point Likert's scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 9 (strongly agree). For each statement, the scores of all the obstetricians were summed and an average score of =7.00 was required to attain the consensus. Results: The cut-off hemoglobin (Hb) levels of above 11 gm/dL within 1-week postdelivery is termed as PPA. Postpartum anemia severity can be graded as mild, moderate, and severe with Hb levels of 10-10.9, 7-9.9, and below 7 gm/dL, respectively. All postpartum women (PPW) should be universally screened with Hb estimation and complete blood count (CBC) within 24-48 hours of delivery, prior to discharge, and repeat Hb estimation should be performed at 6 weeks postdelivery. Ferric carboxymaltose is superior to oral and other intravenous (IV) iron therapies and all PPW should be discharged with a single dose of FCM after an informed decision. Additionally, oral iron (OI) is not required during or following FCM administration, the decision to start oral therapy can be taken after 4 weeks of discharge, if required. Objective: Refraining from intake of allergic foods, chronic inflammation and immunosuppressive drug use are factors associated with anemia in atopic dermatitis (AD). In this study, we aimed to investigate the frequency of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and comorbid risk factors affecting this frequency in children with AD. Method: The medical records of 100 children aged 0-6 years with AD (patient group) and 100 healthy children of the same age group without AD (control group) were treated in Sivas Numune State Hospital from May 2019 to October 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: In our study, the frequency of AD in children with AD (15%) was significantly higher than in healthy children (5%) (p<0.001). Early-onset AD, increased SCORAD severity index scores, concomitant food sensitivities, especially multiple food sensitivities, asthma, skin infection, breastfeeding for more than 6 months and presence of multiple atopic conditions were associated with a higher frequency of AD in children with AD. However, hay fever, family history of atopy, exposure to cigarette smoke, large family size, consanguinity and parental socioeconomic status were not significantly associated with a higher prevalence of AD in children with AD. Conclusion: The prevalence of AD was significantly higher in children with AD compared to healthy children. Therefore, improving clinicians’ self awareness of screening and monitoring for AD in children with AD is essential to minimize the burden of AD disease. Background: Anemia from the Greek word (anhaima) meaning "without blood" is the deficiency of red blood cell and/or hemoglobin which result in reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of blood causing tissue hypoxia. Aims and Objectives: To study the efficacy and safety of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) versus iron sucrose in the management of iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy. Materials and Methods: A prospective, singlecenter, comparative interventional randomized study was carried among 180 antenatal mother admitted to antenatal ward in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, from July 1st, 2020, to December 30th, 2021. Results: A total of 180 patients, 90 patients in each FCM and iron sucrose group, were included in the study. There was significant (P=0.001) mean change in hemoglobin (Hb) level in both the groups from pre-treatment to 3 and 6-week post-treatment. There was also a significant (P=0.001) mean change in ferritin level in both the groups from pretreatment to 3 and 6-week post-treatment. The mean change in Hb level and ferritin level was higher among patients of FCM compared to iron sucrose. The adverse reactions were lower among patients of FCM than iron sucrose. Conclusions: This study found that FCM is safer than iron sucrose. Treatment with FCM resulted in rapid replenishment of iron stores in pregnant women with significantly high rise of Hb and ferritin levels over a 6-week period with lesser adverse effects. In pigs, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common disorder that occurs during the early postnatal period, leading to the stunted growth and increased mortality of piglets. The main cause of IDA is low iron stores in the liver of newborn piglets; these stores constitute the main source of iron needed to satisfy the erythropoietic requirements of the piglets in their first weeks of life. Insufficient iron stores in piglets are usually due to the inadequate placental iron transfer from the sow to the fetuses. Therefore, iron supplementation in pregnant sows has been implemented to enhance placental iron transfer and increase iron accumulation in the liver of the fetuses. Over the years, several oral and parenteral approaches have been attempted to supplement sows with various iron preparations, and consequently, to improve piglets' red blood cell indices. However, there is debate with regard to the effectiveness of iron supplementation in pregnant sows for preventing IDA in newborn piglets. Importantly, this procedure should be carried out with caution to avoid iron over-supplementation, which can lead to iron toxicity. Background: Serum iron, an essential component of hemoglobin (Hb) synthesis in vivo, is a crucial parameter for evaluating the body's iron storage and metabolism capacity. Iron deficiency leads to reduced Hb synthesis in red blood cells and smaller red blood cell volume, ultimately resulting in iron‐deficiency anemia. Although serum iron cannot independently evaluate iron storage or metabolism ability, it can reflect iron concentration in vivo and serve as a good predictor of iron‐deficiency anemia. Therefore, exploring the influence of different serum iron levels on anemia and diagnosing and treating iron deficiency in the early stages is of great significance for patients with lung cancer. Aim: This study aims to explore the related factors of cancer‐related anemia (CRA) in lung cancer and construct a nomogram prediction model to evaluate the risk of CRA in patients with different serum iron levels. Methods: A single‐center retrospective cohort study was conducted, including 1610 patients with lung cancer, of whom 1040 had CRA. The relationship between CRA and its influencing factors was analyzed using multiple linear regression models. Lung cancer patients were divided into two groups according to their serum iron levels: decreased serum iron and normal serum iron. Each group was randomly divided into a training cohort and a validation cohort at a ratio of 7:3. The influencing factors were screened by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, and nomogram models were constructed. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the models. Results: CRA in lung cancer is mainly related to surgery, chemotherapy, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score, serum iron, C‐reactive protein (CRP), albumin, and total cholesterol (p < 0.05). CRA in lung cancer patients with decreased serum iron is primarily associated with albumin, age, and cancer staging, while CRA in lung cancer patients with normal serum iron is mainly related to CRP, albumin, total cholesterol, and cancer staging. The area under the ROC curve of the training cohort and validation cohort for the prediction model of lung cancer patients with decreased serum iron was 0.758 and 0.760, respectively. Similarly, the area under the ROC curve of the training cohort and validation cohort for the prediction model of lung cancer patients with normal serum iron was 0.715 and 0.730, respectively. The calibration curves of both prediction models were around the ideal 45° line, suggesting good discrimination and calibration. DCA showed that the nomograms had good clinical utility. Conclusion: Both models have good reliability and validity and have significant clinical value. They can help doctors better assess the risk of developing CRA in lung cancer patients. CRP is a risk factor for CRA in lung cancer patients with normal serum iron but not in patients with decreased serum iron. Therefore, whether CRP and the inflammatory state represented by CRP will further aggravate the decrease in serum iron levels, thus contributing to anemia, warrants further study. Background: Iron deficiency contributes for over half of all anaemia cases, especially among women and children. Iron deficiency anaemia remains a serious public health concern worldwide. The aim of this study is to determine the association between the single nucleotide polymorphism rs235756 in the bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) gene and iron deficiency status. Results: 104 total anaemic samples were selected from Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. ARMS-PCR was performed to genotype the rs235756 SNP in the 104 samples. The genotype distribution of BMP2 rs235756 showed that AG genotypes had the highest frequency 51(86.4%) followed by GG 6(10.2%) and AA 2(3.4%) in IDA group, whereas AG 42(93.3%), AA 2(4.4%) and GG 1(2.2%) were found in the other anaemia group. The minor allele frequency in BMP 2 rs235756 from this study (0.514) was not similar to the East Asian (EAS) population (0.135); however, the allelic frequency showed significant association between these two. The mean of total iron binding capacity level differed significantly between homozygous-dominant AA and AG + GG genotypes (P < 0.05) but no significant difference for the mean of haematological parameter, ferritin and serum iron. Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia and iron deficiency are usual clinical conditions in daily clinical practice, requiring iron replacement therapy. The study objective was to evaluate the appropriateness of intravenous iron treatment in hospitalized patients and to identify the main causes of inappropriate prescription. Method: This is a retrospective observational study. Adult patients who received intravenous iron therapy at their hospital during the study period were included. Appropriate treatment was considered when patient presented iron deficiency, either due to absolute (ferritin <100 ng/mL) or functional iron deficiency (transferrin saturation index < 20 % and ferritin < 300 ng/mL). The main variable of the study was patient percentage with adequate prescription or parenteral iron. Results: The study included 250 patients. The use of iron was adequate in 41.6 % (104) of the 250 patients analyzed. The main cause of inadequacy in 46.4 % of patients was the lack of analytical data which corroborated iron deficiency. Conclusions: Our center has a deficiency in the appropriateness of the prescription of parenteral iron despite the existence of a protocol for its use. The main point of improvement would be the creation of an analytical profile that allows the adequate diagnosis of iron deficiency prior to the prescription of intravenous iron. In some pathologies, the lack of clinical guidelines with specific cut-off points for analytical markers indicative of iron deficiency in the available literature may contribute to this situation. Iron resistance iron deficiency anaemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypochromic microcytic anaemia, low transferrin saturation and inappropriately high hepcidin levels. The aetiology of this condition is rooted in genetic variations within the transmembrane serine protease 6 (TMPRSS6) genes, responsible for encoding matriptase-2, a pivotal negative regulator of hepcidin. We conducted a systematic search across four electronic databases, yielding 538 articles in total out of which 25 were finally included and were preceded further, aiming to prognosticate prevalent single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and detrimental genetic alterations. This review aims to elucidate the effects of various SNPs and pathogenic mutations on both haematological and biochemical parameters, as well as their potential interethnic correlation. Employing bioinformatics tools, we subjected over 100 SNPs to scrutiny, discerning their potential functional ramifications. We found rs1373272804, rs1430692214 and rs855791 variants to be most frequent and were having a significant impact on haematological and biochemical profile. We found that individuals of European ancestry were more prone to have these variants compared to other ethnic groups. In conclusion, this review not only sheds light on the association of TMPRSS6 polymorphism in iron resistance iron deficiency anaemia (IRIDA), but also highlights the critical need for further investigations involving larger sample size and more diverse ethnic groups around the globe. An 88-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with the sudden onset of dyspnea after eating. The patient had undergone nephrectomy for a left renal tumor 24 years previously. The patient had been prescribed ferrous citrate for iron-deficiency anemia. She complained of appetite loss a few days before admission but had no abdominal pain. The (patho-)physiological responses to hypoxia are highly heterogeneous between individuals. In this review, we focused on the roles of sex differences, which emerge as important factors in the regulation of the body's reaction to hypoxia. Several aspects should be considered for future research on hypoxia-related sex differences, particularly altitude training and clinical applications of hypoxia, as these will affect the selection of the optimal dose regarding safety and efficiency. There are several implications, but there are no practical recommendations if/how women should behave differently from men to optimise the benefits or minimise the risks of these hypoxia-related practices. Here, we evaluate the scarce scientific evidence of distinct (patho)physiological responses and adaptations to high altitude/hypoxia, biomechanical/anatomical differences in uphill/downhill locomotion, which is highly relevant for exercising in mountainous environments, and potentially differential effects of altitude training in women. Based on these factors, we derive sex-specific recommendations for mountain sports and intermittent hypoxia conditioning: (1) Although higher vulnerabilities of women to acute mountain sickness have not been unambiguously shown, sex-dependent physiological reactions to hypoxia may contribute to an increased acute mountain sickness vulnerability in some women. Adequate acclimatisation, slow ascent speed and/or preventive medication (e.g. acetazolamide) are solutions. (2) Targeted training of the respiratory musculature could be a valuable preparation for altitude training in women. (3) Sex hormones influence hypoxia responses and hormonal-cycle and/or menstrual-cycle phases therefore may be factors in acclimatisation to altitude and efficiency of altitude training. As many of the recommendations or observations of the present work remain partly speculative, we join previous calls for further quality research on female athletes in sports to be extended to the field of altitude and hypoxia. Background: Febrile seizure (FS) is the single most common seizure type in children younger than 5 years. The age for peak incidence of febrile seizure is 14 to 18 months, which overlaps with that of iron deficiency anemia. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the association of serum ferritin and iron deficiency anaemia with simple febrile seizures. Methods: In this case-control study 50 patients with febrile seizure were evaluated for iron deficiency anaemia by estimation of Hemoglobin%, MCV, MCH, RDW, and serum ferritin. The control group consisted of 50 febrile children of the same age group without convulsion. Data were recorded in case record form and all the outcomes were recorded. Results: In this study, the mean age of the patients was 20.48 ± 13.79 (range: 6-60) months. In the case group, the mean (± SD) Serum Ferritin level was 52.54 ± 52.64 µg/L and in the control group, the mean (± SD) S. Ferritin level was 87.40 ± 75.74 µg/L. In the case group, 46% of patients had low ferritin level and in the control group, 24% of patients had low ferritin level. Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA) was found among 26% of children in the case group and 14% in the control group. A statistically significant difference was found regarding mean S. Ferritin level and ferritin status between the case and control group. (Odds ratio 0.002 and 2.698) But, in the case of IDA, there was no statistically significant difference observed between the groups. Conclusion: A low ferritin level was associated with an increased risk of febrile seizures. Therefore, in children with febrile seizures, clinicians should be concerned about ferritin status even at normal hemoglobin levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Iron deficiency is a serious condition occurring when the human body's total iron is less than the normal amount (three-four g). This study aimed to find the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and its association with cognitive abilities among female students. A cross-sectional study was carried out on 198 female students recruited using convenience sampling from Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University. Materials & methods: A food frequency questionnaire and cognitive abilities tests were used to collect the required information. Results: The results showed that the prevalence of IDA was 27.4%. The cognitive abilities parameters of immediate memory, working memory, speed of attention, and accuracy of attention for 50.0% of the students were 24, 16, 194, and three, respectively. Conclusions: No significant association between IDA and cognitive abilities was noted. Aim: Faecal immunochemical testing (FIT) is used in the detection of colorectal cancer (CRC). FIT is invariably used at a single faecal haemoglobin (f‐Hb) concentration threshold. The aim of this observational study was to explore risk scoring models (RSMs) with f‐Hb and other risk factors for CRC in symptomatic patients attending primary care, potentially speeding diagnosis and saving endoscopy resources. Method: Records of patients completing FIT were linked with The Scottish Cancer Registry and with other databases with symptoms, full blood count and demographic variables, and randomized into derivation and validation cohorts. Stepwise multivariable logistic regression created RSMs assessed in the validation cohort. Results: Of 18 805 unique patients, 9374 and 9431 were in the derivation and validation cohorts, respectively: f‐Hb, male sex, increasing age, iron deficiency anaemia and raised systemic immune inflammation index created the final RSM. A risk score threshold of ≥2.363, generating the same number of colonoscopies as a f‐Hb threshold of ≥10 μg Hb/g gave improved sensitivity for CRC in both cohorts. A RSM which excluded f‐Hb was used to investigate the effect of raising the f‐Hb threshold from ≥10 to ≥20 μg Hb/g in those with a low risk score. This approach would have generated 234 fewer colonoscopies but missed four CRCs. Conclusion: The RSM conferred no significant benefit to patients with very low f‐Hb and CRC. Alternative strategies combining FIT with other variables may be more appropriate for safety‐netting of symptomatic patients. Postpartum anemia and iron deficiency are associated with postpartum depression. This study investigated the association between a low mean corpuscular volume (MCV) without anemia (which implies early-stage iron deficiency) in early pregnancy and perinatal mental health outcomes. The fixed data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), a Japanese nationwide birth cohort, were used. Perinatal mental health was assessed using the Kessler 6-item psychological distress scale (K6) in mid-pregnancy and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at 1- and 6-months postpartum. Among the 3635 women with MCVs <85 fL in early pregnancy, the proportions of women with K6 scores ≥13 in mid-pregnancy and EPDS scores ≥9 at 1- and 6-months postpartum were 2.7 %, 12.8 %, and 9.9 %, respectively, compared with the 33,242 women with MCVs ≥85 fL at 1.9 %, 11.9 %, and 9.0 %, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression models showed that an MCV <85 in early pregnancy was associated with a K6 score ≥ 13 in mid-pregnancy and an EPDS score ≥ 9 at 1- and 6-months postpartum (adjusted odds ratio (95 % confidence interval): 1.48 (1.16–1.87), 1.14 (1.01–1.28), and 1.09 (0.95–1.24), respectively). Low MCV values do not necessarily represent iron deficiency. Ferritin, currently the best indicator of iron deficiency, was not measured in the JECS. This study results suggest that a low MCV without anemia in early pregnancy is associated with a slightly increased risk of perinatal mental health deterioration. • MCV in early pregnancy and perinatal mental health was examined in a large cohort. • Low MCV without anemia in early pregnancy slightly declines perinatal mental health. • Iron deficiency should be managed from preconception to ensure maternal mental health. BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the commonest global nutritional deficiency diseases, and the low bioavailability of iron is a key contributing factor. The peptide-iron complex could be used as a novel iron supplement to improve iron bioavailability. RESULTS: In this study, antioxidant low molecular weight (<3 kDa) phosvitin peptide (named PP-4) was separated to prepare a phosvitin peptide-ferrous complex (named PP-4-Fe); then the structural conformation of PP-4-Fe was characterized and its bioavailability by in vitro digestion was evaluated. The results showed that PP-4 had good ferrous-binding activity with 96.14 ± 2.86 ~g Fe2+ mg-11, and had a strong antioxidant effect with 995.61 ± 79.75 ~mol TE mg-1 in 2,2'-azinobis'3-ethylbenzothiazoline- 6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 62.3 ± 3.95 ~mol FeSO4 mg-1 in ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). After ferrous binding, the FRAP activity of PP-4-Fe, enhanced by 1.8 times, formed a more ordered structure with an increase in α-helix and decrease in γ-random coil. The ferrous binding sites of PP-4 involved were the amino, carboxyl, imidazole, and phosphate groups. The PP-4-Fe complex displayed excellent gastrointestinal stability and antioxidant effects during digestion. The iron dialysis percentage of PP-4-Fe was 74.59% ± 0.68%, and increased to 81.10% ± 0.89% with the addition of 0.25 times vitamin C (VC). This indicated that PP-4-Fe displayed excellent bioavailability and VC in sufficient quantities had a synergistic effect on improving bioavailability. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that antioxidant phosvitin peptide was an efficient delivery system to protect ferrous ions and suggested that the phosvitin peptide-ferrous complex has strong potential as a ferrous supplement. In clinics, hepcidin levels are elevated in various anemia‐related conditions, particularly in iron‐refractory anemia and in high inflammatory states that suppress iron absorption, which remains an urgent unmet medical need. To identify effective treatment options for various types of iron‐refractory anemia, the potential effect of hypoxia and pharmacologically‐mimetic drug FG‐4592 (Roxadustat) are evaluated, a hypoxia‐inducible factor (HIF)‐prolyl hydroxylase (PHD) inhibitor, on mouse models of iron‐refractory iron‐deficiency anemia (IRIDA), anemia of inflammation and 5‐fluorouracil‐induced chemotherapy‐related anemia. The potent protective effects of both hypoxia and FG‐4592 on IRIDA as well as other 2 tested mouse cohorts are found. Mechanistically, it is demonstrated that hypoxia or FG‐4592 could stabilize duodenal Hif2α, leading to the activation of Fpn transcription regardless of hepcidin levels, which in turn results in increased intestinal iron absorption and the amelioration of hepcidin‐activated anemias. Moreover, duodenal Hif2α overexpression fully rescues phenotypes of Tmprss6 knockout mice, and Hif2α knockout in the gut significantly delays the recovery from 5‐fluorouracil‐induced anemia, which can not be rescued by FG‐4592 treatment. Taken together, the findings of this study provide compelling evidence that targeting intestinal hypoxia‐related pathways can serve as a potential therapeutic strategy for treating a broad spectrum of anemia, especially iron refractory anemia.
