Edible oil imports to Africa grew over 10% per year from 2006 to 2015, and accounted for 34% of the continent’s total growth in food imports over this period—the highest share of any food group. In the same period, several African countries experienced a boom in the local production and processing of oil-seeds. The combination of import growth and domestic production booms reveals a gap in the literature on the characteristics of edible oil demand in Africa. We begin to fill this gap by estimating own-price, cross-price, and expenditure elasticities of demand for palm, sunflower, and other edible oils in Tanzania. We apply a QUAIDS model to detailed household level data-focusing on palm and sunflower oil, because for the most part, palm oil is imported and sunflower is domestically produced. Our main finding is a surprisingly low level of substitution between the domestic and imported edible oils. Simulated budget shares from our estimates suggest that a 10% tariff increase on palm oil leads to less than a 0.06% change in the budget share of domestically produced sunflower oil. We identify other potential policy implications from our findings and highlight steps for further research.

This paper presents a system of models for the estimation of international (import/export) freight flows through a partial share approach. It allows us to simulate attraction, production, distribution and modal split for the estimation of modal Origin-Destination matrices in quantities. Aiming at predicting long term effects for strategic planning, the modelling system has been specified through easy-to-capture variables represented by level-of-service attributes and aggregate socio-economic variables. The calibration was carried out by using a set of available data in Italy that allowed us to consider import/export flows for different freight types given by the aggregation of classes provided by European NST/R classifications. Sturgeon fish (Acipenseriformes) is commercially used to produce high quality fish meat and highly priced caviar. In fact, all species of Sturgeon fish are integrated into CITES appendix. Sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) is the most frequently bred/reared and the most commercial representative of its kind, not only in Europe but also in Asia. The aim of this final project is to evaluate international sturgeon trade while using CITES references from 1998-2012. The source of data(s) was commercial database CITES. Over the last 15 years, we have exported and imported almost 5000 tons and 32 million pieces of all species. During this monitored period the frequency/traffic of the trade increased. The mostly traded forms were fish eggs which were exclusively destined/designated for commercial purpose and came from those specimens which were reared in captivity - (94% from commercial activity). People mostly traded sturgeon in these forms : (1) eggs, (2) caviar, (3) extracts,(4) derivatives, (5) fish meat and others. In the last 3 years, the trade intensity in fish eggs markedly decreased. On the contrary, since 2008 there was an annual growth of/in the sale of caviar. France was not only the country of origin but also the country where there was the largest/greatest/biggest volume of market. Germany was one of the main export countries, while Armenia , if we take the quantity (kg) into account. On the other hand, The U.S. was the main import country. Sturgeon was exported in the greatest quantity to Moldavia. During the period of time mentioned above, The Czech Republic exported only twice (35 000 pieces) and imported (210 pieces) of living specimen.

Denna uppsats innehåller min tolkning av filmen Import/Export (2007) av Ulrich Seidl i syfte att skapa ökad förståelse för människan och kulturen i dagens Öst- och Västeuropa och att få fram de föreställningar som präglar kulturmöten mellan öst- och västeuropéer. Undersökningen genomfördes med hjälp av en hermeneutisk metod i kombination med Emile Durkheims funktionalistiska teori, postkoloniala teorier och Geert Hofstedes teori om kulturdimensioner. Undersökning visade att både öst- och västeuropeiska samhällen i filmen präglas av anomi. Värden grupperade kring dikotomierna individualism/kollektivism, maskulinitet/femininitet och osäkerhetsundvikande framställs tydligast i filmen. Livsåskådningsanalys visade att en materialistisk verklighetsuppfattning dominerar i både Öst- och Västeuropa tillsammans med övervägande pessimistisk och negativ grundhållning, vilket i sin tur påverkar både karaktärernas människosyn och deras handlingar. Skillnader i livsåskådning mellan öst- och västeuropéer bygger på skillnader i de förhärskande kulturella värdena och därmed på skild människosyn. Kulturmöten mellan öst- och västeuropéer i filmen präglas av främlingsrädsla och främlingsfientlighet. De bygger på västeuropéernas koloniala föreställningar om Östeuropa och dess invånare som ociviliserade barbarer, som ska ”civiliseras” av Väst samt på östeuropéernas föreställningar om Västeuropa och dess invånare som Antikrist och ärkefiende som man ska skydda sig mot. Europas nutid framställs i filmen på ett dystert sätt. Det finns även scener som utgör paralleller till Oswald Spenglers verk Västerlandets undergångoch kan tyda på filmskaparens pessimistiska syn på Europas utveckling i riktning mot undergång.

O presente trabalho descreve e analisa o contexto das fileiras do papel e do cartão e das embalagens integrando as fases de transformação industrial até aos produtos finais, numa perspectiva de fileira. São caracterizados os fluxos de produção, a estrutura das empresas e do trabalho, nas diferentes fases do ciclo produtivo, e as especificidades associadas aos mercados interno e externo. A descrição das variáveis analisadas demonstra a importância económica destas fileiras no contexto nacional, evidenciando a sua relevância enquanto actividades onde as exportações merecem destaque, assim como o generalizado bom desempenho dos indicadores económicos, de que são exemplo a produtividade do trabalho e os salários praticados. The present work describes and analyses the context of the paper and paper board sector and that of wood, paper and paper board wrapping and packaging sector, integrating the phases of industrial transformation up to the final products. The production flows are characterized, as well as the structure of the enterprises and workforce at the different phases of the productive cycle. The specificities associated with the domestic and external markets are also analysed. The description of the variables shows the economic importance of these sectors in the national context, attesting the significance of the exportations, as well as the generalized good performance of macroeconomic indicators as, for example, the labour productivity and the salaries. Ce travail décrit et analyse le contexte des filières du papier et du carton ainsi que des emballages en intégrant les phases de la transformation industrielle jusqu’aux produits finaux, dans une perspective de filière. Les flux de production, la structure des entreprises et du travail sont caractérisés dans les différentes phases du cycle productif ainsi que les spécificités associées aux marchés interne et externe. La description des variables analysées démontre l’importance économique de ces filières dans le contexte national, tout en soulignant leur importance en tant qu’activités dont les exportations sont importantes, tout comme la bonne performance générale des indicateurs économiques, dont les exemples sont la productivité du travail et les salaires.
