Genetically modified foods (GMF) have long been discussed as one of the potential means to bring about our urgently needed agricultural transformation. However, even as long, the public in Europe and Northern America has rejected GMF. Motivated by this ongoing polarisation about GMF, we conducted a systematic review on factors that impact GMF perceptions and attitudes. Adding to previous reviews on GMF attitude, such as Frewer et al. (2013), we are particularly interested in how differences in attitudes between the Global North and Global South (GS) unfold. With that, we also contribute to overcoming a bias that we noted: the majority of studies on this topic has been conducted in the Global North. Moreover, because recent research on moral evolution shows how vital morality is for attitude formation, we are particularly interested in the role of moral beliefs in forming attitudes on GMF. Our study followed the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews. A total of 55 papers were included in the review, 45 of those from the initial search, and 10 from the additional search, specifically focusing on the GS. Our results show a heterogenous dynamic behind the prediction of attitude. Interestingly, morality is shown to be an important factor. Specifically, we find that moral concerns, for example of fairness, world views, religion, play a prominent role in GMF attitudes. Thus, when designing policies and improving science communication about GMF, moral benefits of the technology need more consideration and should be sensibly addressed. Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, the population in the GS should be given greater consideration in issues that affect the whole world. Agri-biotech promotes genetically modified organisms (GMO) as solutions to achieve food security by increasing yields, reducing pesticide use through genetically introduced resistance to herbicides and as strategy for climate change mitigation and adaptation. After 30 years of biotechnological crops, these proposals have failed on their pledges, while the risk assessment, non-considered outcomes to the environment, biodiversity and health have been overlooked. New Plant-Breeding Technologies (NPBTs), with the capacity of inserting, deleting, or modifying DNA or RNA nucleotides in specific genetic regions have emerged in the last 15 years. The most prominent technique used to edit genomes is CRISPR-Cas. Its proponents argue that mutations introduced via genome editing pose no risk to the environment and/or human health; thus, these products should be exempted from any regulation, risk assessment, traceability and labeling, a push that would actually restrict the freedom to choose of farmers and consumers. Our work summarizes the outcomes reported in the scientific literature on the use of gene editing tools in food crops. We discuss perspectives for upgrading biosafety governance of these new GMO in order to promote the autonomy of farmers, away from positivist techno-scientific fixes that downplay the systemic crises in which industrial agriculture plays a major role [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following a request from the European Commission, the GMO Panel assessed additional information related to the application for authorisation of food and feed containing, consisting of and produced from genetically modified soybean MON × MON 87708 × MON 89788 (EFSA‐GMO‐NL‐2015‐126). The applicant conducted a 90‐day feeding study on GM soybean MON 87705 and provided a proposal for post‐market monitoring considering the altered fatty acid profile of GM soybean MON 87705 × MON 87708 × MON 89788, to fulfil the deficiencies identified by EFSA GMO Panel, addressing elements that remained inconclusive from a previous EFSA scientific opinion issued in 2020. The GMO Panel concludes that the 90‐day feeding study on GM soybean MON 87705 is in line with the requirements of Regulation (EU) No 503/2013 and that no treatment‐related adverse effects were observed in rats after feeding diets containing soybean MON 87705 meals at 30% or 15% for 90 days. The GMO Panel reiterates the recommendation for a PMM for food in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 and Regulation (EU) No 503/2013 and concludes that the proposal provided by the applicant is in line with the recommendations described for the PMM plan of soybean MON 87705 × MON 87708 × MON 89788 in the adopted scientific opinion. Taking into account the previous assessment and the new information, the GMO Panel concludes that soybean MON 87705 × MON 87708 × MON 89788, as assessed in the scientific opinion on application EFSA‐GMO‐NL‐2015‐126 and in the supplementary toxicity study, is as safe as its non‐GM comparator and the non‐GM reference varieties tested and does not represent a nutritional concern in humans and animals, within the scope of this application. Abstract The molecular characterization of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is essential for ensuring safety and gaining regulatory approval for commercialization. According to CODEX standards, this characterization involves evaluating the presence of introduced genes, insertion sites, copy number, and nucleotide sequence structure. Advances in technology have led to the increased use of next-generation sequencing (NGS) over traditional methods such as Southern blotting. While both methods provide high reproducibility and accuracy, Southern blotting is labor-intensive and time-consuming due to the need for repetitive probe design and analyses for each target, resulting in low throughput. Conversely, NGS facilitates rapid and comprehensive analysis by mapping whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data to plasmid sequences, accurately identifying T-DNA insertion sites and flanking regions. This advantage allows for efficient detection of T-DNA presence, copy number, and unintended gene insertions without additional probe work. This paper reviews the current status of GMO genome characterization using NGS and proposes more efficient strategies for this purpose.

The article explores the anthropological challenges of governing the living matter, particularly the collective ability to reach consensus in the regulation of genetic diversity. Based on European controversies related to recent plant selection techniques, it aims to analyze divergences in understanding biological stability. While disagreements between what is considered natural and what is not play a role in the perception of how to care for the living matter, the tensions remain structured by its inherent complexity. Several implicit conceptions of biological preservation and biodiversity coexist. Thus, the fragile governance of the living matter stems from differences in representations of what sustains it, rather than the announcement of a disruptive innovation. As a singular non-human actor, the living matter leaves traces that are irreducibly controversial.

In Türkiye, in accordance with European Union harmonization laws, the Biosafety Act No. 5977 entered into force on September 18, 2010. The basic legislation regarding the application process is composed of the Biosafety Act, Regulations on Genetically Modified Organisms and Their Products, and Regulations on Working Procedures and Principles of Biosafety Board and Committees. Biosafety legislation foresees a special application procedure for genetically modified organism (GMO) food, food products, feed, and other products. The application regulated in the Biosafety Law is a special administrative procedure in nature. The primary objective of this study is to explain the legal regime of this application procedure. While explaining this issue, relevant limitations will be discussed in detail, and solutions will be presented for such limitations. This study was divided into two parts. The first part examines the basic concepts related to the application will be examined, including its scope and nature of the application, the prohibitions, and exceptions related to the application, the applicant, and the relevant authorities. The second part focuses on the application process, covering notifications to the applicant and reasons for rejection of the application, evaluation of the application, final decision stage, and simplified procedure. The diversity of genetically modified plants used for food and feed is increasing worldwide. For the detection and control of these products, efficient and reliable analytical tools are a prerequisite. This can be done by screening for specific DNA-elements and constructs characteristic of transgenic plants. In the past, numerous methods have already been published. However, several genetically modified plants are not covered by common screening methods. Here, a new qualitative triplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method is presented, detecting two transgene flanking sequences and the transition between the Cassava Vein Mosaic Virus Promotor (P-CsVMV) and the phosphinothricin-N-acetyltransferase (pat) gene. These sequences are present in several transgenic plants and therefore, the described triplex method can be used as a screening tool to guide further analysis and increase the efficiency of the analysis strategy for GMO detection. The method is characterized by high specificity, sensitivity and robustness and is provided as a ring-trial validated method in the Official Collection of Methods according to the German Food and Feed Act. If genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are approved in the EU for experimental release or marketing authorization (placing on the market), a risk assessment (RA) is carried out beforehand to determine whether this may be associated with negative effects on human health, nature or the environment. Applications are reviewed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the national Competent Authorities of the Member States. However, the potential ramifications of the GMOs that are systematically addressed in the current RA context are limited. Broader consideration can include environmental and health aspects beyond the scope of the statutory RA, as well as societal, ethical and cultural impacts. These other levels of impact may be considered during the comitology process of authorisation, but how this is done is typically not made explicit in a systematic way. However, with the dynamic developments of new kinds of GMOs, these considerations as well as transparency regarding the role of broader considerations in political decision-making become more and more relevant. Against this backdrop, we identified the requirements and suggest the main elements for such a broader assessment. We use insights from the field of Technology Assessment (TA) to explore the requirements for operationalising a rapid but still systematic, transparent and broad case-by-case GMO assessment compatible with the existing legislative framework. Intensification in agriculture affects many insect species, including butterflies. Insect‐resistant crops, such as Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) maize, which produces a toxin active against Lepidoptera, are an alternative to insecticide sprays. Genetically modified crops are regulated in most countries and require an environmental risk assessment. In the European Union, such assessments include the use of simulation models to predict the effects on nontarget Lepidoptera (NTL). To support the assessment of protected NTL, we extended an individual‐based, stochastic, spatially explicit mathematical model (LepiX) to include a wider range of exposure scenarios, a species‐sensitivity distribution, and an option for repeated exposure of individuals. We applied the model to transgenic maize DAS‐1507, which expresses a high concentration of Bt toxin in pollen that may be consumed by NTL larvae on their host plants nearby. Even in the most conservative scenario without repeated exposure, mortality estimates for highly sensitive species ranged from 41% to 6% at distances of 10–1000 m from the nearest maize field. Repeated exposure can cause additional mortality and thus is relevant for the overall risk assessment. Uncertainties in both exposure and ecotoxicity estimates strongly influenced the predicted mortalities. Care should be taken to include these uncertainties in the model scenarios used for decision‐making. In accordance with other modeling results, our simulations demonstrated that mean mortality may not be safe for protected species. With its high pollen expression, DAS‐1507 maize may pose risks to sensitive and protected butterfly and moth species that may be difficult to manage. High expression of Bt toxin in pollen is unnecessary for controlling target pests. Consequently, we suggest that Bt maize with high pollen expression not be cultivated in regions where protected butterflies are to be conserved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background For market approval of genetically modified plants (GMPs), the evaluation of agronomic and phenotypic plant traits is a standard requirement and part of the comparative assessment of the GMP and its conventional counterpart. This comparative assessment is a starting point for environmental risk assessment (ERA) and should inform all areas of risk. We scrutinize frequently used approaches to characterize GMPs in EU market applications and discuss their usefulness for drawing conclusions on risks related to the plant’s ability to survive, persist or become invasive. Results Our analysis shows that the agronomic and phenotypic characterization of GMPs, although based on guidelines, is confined to plant traits and test designs that are relevant for the quality control and agronomic performance of genetically modified (GM) crops. We provide evidence of how methodological approaches frequently applied during the agronomic and phenotypic characterization of the GMP could be improved and complemented to better inform on potential phenotypic changes relevant to assessing environmental risks. These approaches refer to (i) the assessment of the survival of GM seeds and plants (e.g., volunteers); (ii) the consideration of environmental exposure and (iii) improved methodological approaches for the assessment of biotic and abiotic stress responses for GMPs. Conclusions The comparative assessment of agronomic and phenotypic plant traits currently does not provide suitable data to draw conclusions on environmental risks relating to the persistence and invasiveness of the GMP. Ecologically more realistic assessments should be part of the phenotypic characterization of GMPs and need guidance and decision criteria to be implemented in ERA. This is of considerable importance, as new genomic techniques are expected to increase the diversity and complexity of GM plants and traits, particularly stress tolerance, which may affect the survival of GMPs in the environment.

Most scientists claim that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in foods are safe for human consumption and offer societal benefits such as better nutritional content. However, many consumers remain skeptical about their safety. Against this backdrop of diverging views, the authors investigate the impact of different GMO labeling policy regimes on the products consumers choose. Guided by the literature on negativity bias, structural alignment theory, and message presentation, and based on findings from four experiments, the authors show that consumer demand for GM foods depends on the labeling regime policy makers adopt. Both absence-focused ("non-GMO") and presence-focused ("contains GMO") labeling regimes reduce the market share of GM foods, with the reduction being greater in the latter case. GMO labels reduce the importance consumers place on price and enhance their willingness to pay for non-GM products. Results indicate that specific label design choices policy makers implement (in the form of color and style) also affect consumer responses to GM labeling. Consumer attitudes toward GMOs moderate this effect—consumers with neutral attitudes toward GMOs are influenced most significantly by the label design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Dietitians play a critical role in the public's relationship with food and are often overlooked as an important stakeholder group in the general debate about sustainable food. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are one type of modern food source that could contribute to a more sustainable food system. This case study is the first to examine the knowledge, perception and willingness‐to‐recommend (WTR) genetically modified (GM) foods by dietitians in Europe. Methods: An online survey was addressed to all members of the Flemish Association of Dietitians (Belgium) in 2021, resulting in a sample of 98 valid responses. Multivariate linear regression included sociodemographic, knowledge, and attitudinal factors as the independent variables to explain dietitians' WTR. Results: Flemish dietitians had limited knowledge of GMOs; only about half of the GM questions were answered correctly. Most dietitians (53%–76%) would recommend GMOs with positive effects on human nutrition or sustainability, whereas few dietitians (19%–27%) would recommend other GMO applications. Trust in GMO information sources and perceived GM benefits significantly influenced a positive WTR of GM foods. Predominant negative information about GM foods was significantly associated with dietitians' low trust and WTR such foods. Conclusions: Countering the predominantly negative portrayal with more neutral and factual information could improve trust, which in turn could positively influence dietitians' perceptions towards GMOs. By further examining the knowledge and perception of dietitians worldwide GMOs and gene‐edited products, new insights could be could gathered into the positioning of this underexposed stakeholder group. The development and improvement of molecular biology methods have led to the creation of new technologies that make it possible to modify plant genomes by transferring and integrating into the genomes' heterologous genes from various expression systems (genetic engineering), as well as inducing knockouts of one or more target genes of interest (genomic editing). The development of genome-editing methods is a new milestone in the development of modern breeding methods and certainly relies on the knowledge and technologies developed for transgenesis. ABSTRACTThere is a large literature about consumer acceptance of GM foods dating back almost three decades, but there are fewer studies that investigate how support for specific GM attributes contribute to general support for novel plant technologies. In addition, there is little information on how support has changed over time. Using survey data from 2018 to 2023 in a U.S. State (Vermont) (n = 3101), we analyze changes in support for a variety of GM attributes over time. There are three major findings. First, there is movement toward neutrality in support for various GM attributes, but opposition continues. Second, there is variability in support for different GM attributes. People are most supportive (least opposed) to GM attributes that improve flora (plant health or drought tolerance), and most opposed (least supportive) of attributes that impact fauna (specifically fish). Third, multivariate regression reveals that assessments of individual GM attributes contribute to levels of overall support of the use of GM technologies in agricultural production.

ABSTRACTThis paper focuses on analyzing discussions related to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) on Twitter, with a specific focus on the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories. The authors collected and analyzed 1,048,274 English tweets related to GMOs between January 2020 and December 2022 using the Twitter API. The tweets were subjected to topical and sentiment analysis to identify the prevalent themes and attitudes toward GMOs. 30.92% of the tweets in the observed period were negative, 21.65% were neutral, and 47.43% were positive. The authors identified four clusters of tweets associated with misinformation or conspiracy theories: GMOs and vaccines, GMOs and COVID-19, GMOs and Monsanto, and GMOs and Bill Gates. The findings of this analysis can inform strategies for combating the spread of false information and conspiracies on social media and improve public understanding and trust in GMO technology.

ABSTRACTGene technologies, such as transgenesis and new breeding techniques (NBTs), expand the toolbox for plant breeding. Many countries in Africa, however, have long been seen as “slow adopters” of gene technologies for several reasons, one being the lack of, or overly restrictive, biosafety regulatory frameworks. This is sometimes attributed to the influence of the precautionary-oriented EU biosafety policies. This study analyses and compares the biosafety regulatory frameworks and their implementation in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda, and in the EU member state Sweden. The focus is on (1) the structure of the biosafety regulatory frameworks including the scope of the legislation, (2) the duration and cost of regulatory authorization for field trials with genetically modified (GM) plants, and (3) the regulatory approach to NBT products, i.e. to what extent NBT products are subject to the provisions of the biosafety regulatory framework. The data was collected through studying relevant legal and policy documents as well as interviewing regulatory officers and researchers in the respective countries. We found that the regulatory procedures in the selected countries are relatively straightforward, while the costs and duration may present a challenge. The regulatory approach to NBT products differ between the selected African countries and Sweden, the latter which follows EU regulations. The results are discussed in terms of the impact the regulatory developments in these four jurisdictions may have on international R&D collaborations involving the use of gene technologies and we also weigh the results against the common conception that Europe exerts a heavy influence on African countries in this technology field.

Abstract Misinformation has always existed, but it became a major preoccupation during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its ability to affect public health choices, decisions, and policy. In their article, “Misinformation in the media: Global coverage of GMOs 2019–2021” (GM Crops & Food, 17 Nov 2022), Mark Lynas et al. characterise critics of agricultural genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their associated pesticides as purveyors of “misinformation”. They draw an equivalence between critics of agricultural GMOs and people who make false claims about climate change, COVID-19, and vaccines. We examined their main claims on these GMOs—for example, that there is a scientific consensus that they are safe for health and the environment—in the light of the scientific evidence and public discussion on this topic. We found that their claims are biased and misleading and ignore or omit crucial evidence. We conclude that based on the evidence provided, Lynas et al. article can itself be classed as misinformation and could therefore mislead the general public as well as the scientific community.

Recently, the European Commission (EC) published a regulatory proposal on plants generated with new genomic techniques (NGTs) (5 July 2023). According to this proposal, NGT plant applications are categorized into category 1 NGT (NGT1) and category 2 NGT (NGT2) based on their molecular characteristics, which diverges from the current legislation centered around Directive 2001/18/EC. To demonstrate where the path of the proposal leads to in practice, we applied the proposed criteria for categorization to a list of NGT plant applications currently in the commercialization pipeline. Combining literature research and a descriptive statistical approach, we can show that 94% of the plant applications affected by the EC proposal, would be classified as NGT1 and thus would receive market approval without risk assessment, monitoring, and sufficient labeling provisions. The remaining 6% of applications would be classified as NGT2 plants, for which, in deviation from the current regulation, an adapted risk assessment is proposed. Screening of the intended traits in the pipeline highlights that certain NGT1 plants can pose similar environmental risks (e.g., invasiveness) to other genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as defined in Directive 2001/18/EC. For example, NGT1 applications based on RNA interference technology can exhibit insecticidal effects with potential side effects on non-target organisms (i.e., other insects). Our quantitative and case-specific elaboration of how the current EC regulatory proposal would affect the environment, health, and consumer protection will be informative for decision-makers and politicians.

This paper explores farmers' perceptions of climate change and their preferred adaptive and mitigatory strategies within Slovakia's Nitra region, aiming to devise recommendations for climate change-oriented agricultural policies. Our methodology incorporates an analysis of perspectives gathered from a regional survey using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and SuperDecisions software, complemented by a risk-attitude assessment using the modified Multiple Price Lists (MPL) method. A subsequent heterogeneity analysis correlates these preferences with respondents' socio-economic status and risk attitudes. Our findings underscore the use of improved, resilient seeds as a favored adaptation measure and reveal a correlation between farmers' socio-economic attributes and their climate change strategy preferences. Based on this, we propose inclusive, micro-level agricultural policies that prioritize the unique climatic needs of the Nitra region and strongly consider the priority viewpoints of farmers within this region, aiming to promote sustainable agriculture under changing climatic conditions. BACKGROUND: This investigation provides an important insight into Eurasian consumers' food safety beliefs and trust issues influenced by the COVID‐19 pandemic. An online survey was conducted in 15 European and Asian countries involving more than 4000 consumers. RESULTS: It has confirmed that different socioeconomic characteristics, cultural aspects and education levels shape food safety perceptions within Eurasian countries. The COVID‐19 pandemic influenced their beliefs and trust in food safety, which is relatively low on average. However, it is significantly higher for European consumers (especially European Union ones) compared to their Asian counterparts. Both Asian and European respondents agreed that food fraud and climate changes represent a food safety issue. However, European consumers were less concerned regarding the food safety of genetically modified foods and meat and dairy analogs/hybrids. Asian consumers were, to a greater extent, worried about the risk of getting COVID‐19 from food, restaurants, food retail establishments and home food deliveries. CONCLUSION: Eurasian consumers have put their greatest extent of trust, when food safety assurance is concerned, into food scientists and food producers holding a food safety certificate. Broadly, they are uncertain to what extent their federal governments and food inspectors are competent, able and efficient in ensuring food safety. DBN9501 is a new maize transgenic event characterised by being resistance to insects and herbicides. To meet genetically modified (GM)-labeling requirements and monitor the unintended release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), developing a creditable and applicable method for identifying and quantifying GM events is essential. Herein we developed an event-specific method and validated it through inter-laboratory ring trials using blind samples. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of copy number ratio were confirmed at 0.05% and 0.1%, respectively. The quantitative bias ranged from -3.52 to 10.38%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the method was < 25%. Furthermore, the expanded uncertainty for the blind samples S1 − S5 was 0.22%, 0.10%, 0.05%, 0.03%, and 0.02%. These results demonstrated that the event-specific quantitative PCR method could identify and quantify GM DBN9501 for further routine lab analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Main conclusion: Simultaneous application of two sustainability approaches such as the application of biofertilizers to GM plants and microbe bioengineering to enhance physiological response and beneficial interaction with GM plants may have a significant impact on strengthening global food security amid climate change and the pandemic. The second sustainable development goal (SDG 02, Zero Hunger) aims global agricultural sustainability and food security challenges. The agriculture sector has been an integral part of developing countries for millions of farmers and their families. Their contribution provides stability of raw matter related to food availability. But climate change, higher population growth and worldwide pandemics are the main obstacles to food quality, higher crop productivity and global food security. Scientists are concerned with the manifestation of agriculture sustainability in the modern crop management approach to resolving the issues. It is the only way to higher yield productivity by protecting the environment, conserving natural resources, and slowing climate change. Several strategies can be an option to implement, yet the proposed two sustainability approach or 2S approach will be the significant way toward the goal of zero hunger. The first sustainability approach is an application of genetically modified (S1: GMO) Plants and the other is an application of beneficiary plant growth-promoting microbes (S2: Biofertilizers) to the plants for both higher crops and maintenance of the environment. This study summarizes the essential points of S1 and S2 for the widespread utilization of the 2S approach in agriculture and recommends the potential alternatives to be implemented to produce food for all. Background: The analysis of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food and feed is broadly based on the detection of target DNA sequences using PCR‐based methods. The first step of a typical workflow in a GMO testing laboratory is DNA extraction and purification. Several DNA extraction methods have been described for this purpose so far. Whatever the method adopted, the yield and the quality of the extracted DNA are essential factors for the success of GMO analysis. Results: The DNA extraction yield was variable between the different methods, while quality and efficiency appeared comparable. Each method allowed a different yield and a slight correlation between inhibition and the food/feed matrix extracted was observed. Particularly for challenging matrices, the method used for DNA extraction has a remarkable influence on both the quality and quantity of the recovered DNA. Small variations in value % GM content were observed in complex, heterogeneous matrices but not in CRMs and homogeneous matrices. Conclusions: In this study, the purpose is not to establish the best method of extraction but to examine several parameters that play an important role in GMO detection and verify a possible effect on the quantified GMO percentage. In particular, it was found that the yield and quality of extracted DNA depends on the type of sample, notably the degree of processing, composition, particle size, and the protocol used, especially in relation to sample intake. The history of US biotechnology oversight for genetically modified plants is analyzed in the context of policy process theories to derive insights for contemporary governance of gene-edited plants. The Advocacy Coalition Framework sheds light on how opposing coalitions with different policy beliefs struggled to influence oversight, along with coalition disputes over the scope of issues that should be considered in regulatory policy-making. The Multiple Streams Approach and Punctuated Equilibrium Theory explain how focusing events arising from these struggles opened "windows of opportunity" to put issues on the public policy agenda and force changes to oversight over time. For example, nongovernmental organizations had a prominent role in bringing legal challenges through federal courts or in raising attention to risk issues in the media—efforts that prompted advancements in federal regulations, guidance documents, or risk-mitigation practices for biotechnology oversight. These policy dynamics depended on public information to bring controversies to light and elicit a policy response. However, recent biotech regulations allow for gene-edited crops to enter the marketplace without requirements for public disclosure or tracking. Lack of transparency jeopardizes the public legitimacy of gene-edited crops, venues for public participation in biotechnology oversight, and ultimately responsiveness to adapt oversight to future biotech products and emerging risks. Comparative studies of agricultural biotechnology regulation have highlighted differences in the roles that science and politics play in decision-making. Drawing on documentary and interview evidence in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, we consider how the "regulatory cultures" that guided national responses to earlier generations of agricultural biotechnology have developed, alongside the emergence of genome editing in food crops. We find that aspects of the "product-based" regulatory approach have largely been maintained in US biosafety frameworks and that the British and German approaches have at different stages combined "process-based" and "programmatic" elements that address the scientific and sociopolitical novelty of genome editing to varying degrees. We seek to explain these patterns of stability and change by exploring how changing opportunity structures in each jurisdiction have enabled or constrained public reasoning around emerging agricultural biotechnologies. By showing how opportunity structures and regulatory cultures interact over the long-term, we provide insights that help us to interpret current and evolving dynamics in the governance of genome editing and the longer-term development of agricultural biotechnology. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the canonical DNA analysis technique that has enabled the understanding of the complexity of organisms and significantly advanced achievements in the field of biological sciences. Today, the method is still widely used in basic science research, but PCR-based diagnostics are becoming increasingly important in industries such as food and agriculture. This method provides high sensitivity because it requires trace amounts of template DNA to generate enough copies for detection. Using primers specific to the DNA sequence ensures the high specificity of the test. The advantages of the method are time – and cost-effectiveness and reproducibility. PCR-based techniques have found favor in areas where food traceability is important, whether from an economic, legal, health, or religious-cultural point of view. This review outlines the most important aspects in which the PCR method has been successfully applied, namely in the protection of human health by enabling the identification of foodborne pathogens or allergens. Furthermore, the use of PCR in the so-called green criminology, a branch that deals with tracking illegal practices such as food adulteration, compliance with the labeling rules, and detection of food products containing GMO material or other undeclared food ingredients, was also described. Introduction. The debate surrounding the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has largely shifted from whether to label to understanding the various reasons behind supporting or opposing such labeling. Materials and methods. This paper studies factors influencing attitudes towards GMO labeling employing a representative sample of the Czech population (N=884). We examine the impact of information about genetically modified foods (GMFs), environmental concerns, perceived health effects, dietary habits, factors considered important when purchasing, and sociodemographic characteristics on GMO labeling preferences in the framework of ordinal regression analysis. Results and discussion. Our findings reveal that almost one third of the respondents is not familiar with genetically modified foods (GMF). Another third confirm that they are familiar with the GMF, but does not know what it refers to. Almost eighty percent of the respondents do not express interest in GMF. On the other hand, the results suggest that the health concerns and the level of interest and information about GMO significantly predict the propensity to check GMO labels and the belief that the GMO products should be labelled. The current subjective state of health was not related to the attitudes to GMO labelling. Environmental considerations, such as the subjective effect of food production on the environment and the current environmentally conscious behavior (recycling and environmental waste management at home) positively predicted the need for labelling and the propensity to check labels. Additionally, individual dietary habits, such as shopping habits showed to affect the subjective proportion of GMO products the respondent eats. The results will be interested to marketing specialists and policy makers. Conclusion. This research contributes to understanding the multifaceted dynamics underlying public attitudes toward GMO labeling and provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders in the ongoing debate about genetically modified products. Eucalyptus comprises the largest planted area of cultivated production forest in Brazil. Genetic modification of eucalyptus can provide additional characteristics for increasing productivity, protecting plant yield, and potentially altering fiber for various industrial uses. With this objective, a transgenic eucalyptus variety, event H421, received regulatory approval for commercial release after 6 years of approved risk assessment studies by the Brazilian National Technical Biosafety Commission (CTNBio) in 2015, becoming the first approved genetically modified (GM) eucalyptus in the world. GM event H421 enables increased plant biomass accumulation through overexpression of the Arabidopsis 1,4-β-endoglucanase Cel1, which remodels the xyloglucan–cellulose matrix of the cell wall during development to promote cell expansion and growth. As required, in that time, by the current normative from CTNBio, a post-commercial release monitoring plan for H421 was submitted, incorporating general surveillance for five consecutive years with the submission of annual reports. The monitoring plan was conducted on fields of H421 progenies, with conventional clones as comparators, cultivated in representative regions where eucalyptus is cultivated in the states of São Paulo, Bahia, and Maranhão, representing Southeast, Northeast, and Northern Brazil. Over the course of the five-year general surveillance monitoring plan for the approved GM eucalyptus H421, no adverse effect that could impact the biosafety of the commercially approved event was identified. Additionally, the GM eucalyptus exhibited behavior highly consistent with that of conventional commercial clones. Therefore, there was no need for an extra risk assessment study of a case-specific monitoring plan. The results show the importance of continuously updating the regulation norms of governmental agencies to align with scientific advances.

Misinformation has always existed, but it became a major preoccupation during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its ability to affect public health choices, decisions, and policy. In their article, "Misinformation in the media: Global coverage of GMOs 2019–2021" (GM Crops & Food, 17 Nov 2022), Mark Lynas et al. characterise critics of agricultural genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their associated pesticides as purveyors of "misinformation". They draw an equivalence between critics of agricultural GMOs and people who make false claims about climate change, COVID-19, and vaccines. We examined their main claims on these GMOs—for example, that there is a scientific consensus that they are safe for health and the environment—in the light of the scientific evidence and public discussion on this topic. We found that their claims are biased and misleading and ignore or omit crucial evidence. We conclude that based on the evidence provided, Lynas et al. article can itself be classed as misinformation and could therefore mislead the general public as well as the scientific community. This work is to explore the effect of the stress-induced promoter RD29A on the stress tolerance of transgenic tobacco with SikCDPK1 gene from Saussurea involucrata, thus which may lay the foundation for SikCDPK1 gene to play a more effective role when the plant encounters low temperature and drought. Gene recombination technology was used to construct the plant expression vector of SikCDPK1 gene driven by RD29A promoter, and genetic transformation into tobacco by agrobacterium-mediated method, and the phenotype, chlorophyll content, MDA content, POD activity, SOD activity and relative conductivity of RD29A∷SikCDPK1 transgenic tobacco and 35S∷SikCDPK1 transgenic tobacco and non-GMO tobacco were observed, measured and compared after low temperature and drought treatment. As results, the growth status of RD29A∷SikCDPK1 transgenic tobacco was better than that of 35S∷SikCDPK1 transgenic tobacco, and better than that of non-GMO tobacco after drought and low temperature stress. At the same time, the chlorophyll content, POD activity and SOD activity of RD29A∷SikCDPK1 transgenic tobacco were significantly higher than those of 35S∷SikCDPK1 transgenic tobacco, which was very significantly higher than that of non-GMO tobacco. However, the relative conductivity and MDA content of RD29A∷SikCDPK1 transgenic tobacco were significantly lower than 35S∷SikCDPK1 transgenic tobacco, which was very significantly lower than that of non-GMO tobacco. In sum, the promoter RD29A could show stronger drought and low temperature tolerance by slowing down the degradation rate of chlorophyll, increasing enzyme activity of antioxidant system and reducing membrane permeability. Anthocyanins are responsible for the color spectrum of both ornamental and natural flowers. However, not all plant species produce all colors. For example, roses are not blue because they do not naturally possess a hydroxylase that opens the pathway for delphinidin and its derivatives. It is more intriguing why some plants do not carry orange or scarlet red flowers with anthocyanins based on pelargonidin, because the precursor for these anthocyanins should be available if anthocyanins are made at all. The key to this is the substrate specificity of dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR), an enzyme located at the branch point between flavonols and anthocyanins. The most common example is petunia, which does not bear orange flowers unless the enzyme is complemented by biotechnology. We changed a few amino acids in the active site of the enzyme and showed that the mutated petunia DFR started to favor dihydrokaempferol, the precursor to orange pelargonidin, in vitro. When transferred to petunia, it produced an orange hue and dramatically more pelargonidin-based anthocyanins in the flowers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The literature on development has long underscored the importance of knowledge-based assets and innovation for economic growth and competitiveness. This paper explores an apparent paradox: why did Argentine regulators initially demur in approving the commercialization of genetically-modified (GM) wheat, one of very few products innovated by the country's biotech sector? The answer lies in risk mitigation, but the risks Argentine regulators sought to avoid were not the environmental and health risks typically associated with GM products. Rather, they worried about possible disruptions to agricultural trade if exports were found to be contaminated by an unapproved GM product. I define the kind of risk that Argentine regulators sought to minimize as structural risk—that is, risk issuing from structural constraints a country faces given an unfavorable or dependent position in trade relations. By illuminating how risks emanating from structural constraints particular to Southern states shape regulatory frameworks, this analysis advances our understanding of the Regulatory State of the South. Xylan that comprises roughly 25% of hardwood biomass is undesirable in biorefinery applications involving saccharification and fermentation. Efforts to reduce xylan levels have therefore been made in many species, usually resulting in improved saccharification. However, such modified plants have not yet been tested under field conditions. Here we evaluate the field performance of transgenic hybrid aspen lines with reduced xylan levels and assess their usefulness as short-rotation feedstocks for biorefineries. Three types of transgenic lines were tested in four-year field tests with RNAi constructs targeting either Populus GT43 clades B and C (GT43BC) corresponding to Arabidopsis clades IRX9 and IRX14, respectively, involved in xylan backbone biosynthesis, GATL1.1 corresponding to AtGALT1 involved in xylan reducing end sequence biosynthesis, or ASPR1 encoding an atypical aspartate protease. Their productivity, wood quality traits, and saccharification efficiency were analyzed. The only lines differing significantly from the wild type with respect to growth and biotic stress resistance were the ASPR1 lines, whose stems were roughly 10% shorter and narrower and leaves showed increased arthropod damage. GT43BC lines exhibited no growth advantage in the field despite their superior growth in greenhouse experiments. Wood from the ASPR1 and GT43BC lines had slightly reduced density due to thinner cell walls and, in the case of ASPR1, larger cell diameters. The xylan was less extractable by alkali but more hydrolysable by acid, had increased glucuronosylation, and its content was reduced in all three types of transgenic lines. The hemicellulose size distribution in the GALT1.1 and ASPR1 lines was skewed towards higher molecular mass compared to the wild type. These results provide experimental evidence that GATL1.1 functions in xylan biosynthesis and suggest that ASPR1 may regulate this process. In saccharification without pretreatment, lines of all three constructs provided 8-11% higher average glucose yields than wild-type plants. In saccharification with acid pretreatment, the GT43BC construct provided a 10% yield increase on average. The best transgenic lines of each construct are thus predicted to modestly outperform the wild type in terms of glucose yields per hectare. The number of corn cultivars that have been improved using genetically modified technology continues to increase. However, concerns about the unintentional release of living-modified organisms (LMOs) into the environment still exist. Specifically, there are cases where LMO crops grown as fodder are released into the environment and form a volunteer plant community, which raises concerns about their safety. In this study, we analyzed the possibility of weediness and volunteer plants' occurrence when GMO fodder corn grains distributed in Korea are unintentionally released into the environment. Volunteer plants' occurrence was investigated by directly sowing grains in an untreated field. The results showed that the germination rate was extremely low, and even if a corn seed germinated, it could not grow into an adult plant and would die due to weed competition. In addition, the germination rate of edible and fodder grains was affected by temperature (it was high at 20 °C and 30 °C but low at 40 °C and extremely low at 10 °C), and it was higher in the former than in the latter. And the germination rate was higher in Daehakchal (edible corn grains) than in Gwangpyeongok (fodder corn grains). The environmental risk assessment data obtained in this study can be used for future evaluations of the weediness potential of crops and the development of volunteer plant suppression technology in response to unintentional GMO release. To the ordinary precautionary principle, we should add a more precise "scientific precautionary principle". In short, we cannot act on nature based on 'dogmas' that are either manifestly false or are implicitly adopting an uncritical way of thinking. Science is the invention of a new way of thinking, of new theoretical frameworks, starting from a critical review of the principles mobilized, which are themselves well explained. Without this, technoscience, in all its power, becomes a nightmare, as it is totally unsuited to make us live in an ecosystem with all its complexity. The European Union has been very slow to embrace GMOs in comparison with most other countries, requiring extensive authorizations for use and especially crop cultivation, where only one Maize variety is currently approved. However, with more testing recent advances in Genetic Bioengineering and the current concerns regarding the global and European food supply, it is important to question whether the European scepticism surrounding GM crops is justified. Hence, the aim of this paper is to review the studies regarding GMO safety for use in food and feed and discuss the benefits of their large scale use in the European Union.
