This study examines the relationship between the financial performance and annual stock returns of 25 companies from the food, construction, energy, transportation, and technology sectors traded on BIST. The study aims to observe how the COVID-19 period affected these relationships. Data from 2018-2019 before COVID-19 and 2021-2022 after COVID-19 were included in the analysis. The financial performances of the companies were analyzed using the TOPSIS method. The relationship between companies' stock returns and financial performance was examined using Spearman correlation analysis. According to the results of the analysis, it has been observed that the stock returns of the companies fluctuate constantly, regardless of the COVID-19 period. It was concluded that there is no significant relationship between companies' stock returns and financial performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GLOBALIZATION , *STOCKHOLDERS , *CASH flow , *ECONOMIC value added (Corporations) , *FINANCIAL performance - Abstract
With the globalization of markets, competition and performance pressure have accelerated. Investors rightfully expect a reasonable return on the capital they make available to others. Since companies often achieve their growth through capital obtained from new shareholders, the pressure on company profitability increases significantly. The capital market rewards companies' good performance and also punishes their bad performance. At this point, Economic Value Added (EVA), Cash Flow Return on Investment (CFROI), Cash Value Added (CVA) and Market Value Added (MVA), which ensure value maximization, have become increasingly important problems. For this reason, company profitability and growth potential are important. Within the scope of this study, the importance of EVA, CFROI, CVA and MVA indicators and their comparison with traditional methods are discussed in the introduction part. Studies on these indicators that embody value maximization are examined through a literature review. In the methodology section, the data of 11 companies active in the healthcare sector listed on Borsa Istanbul are analyzed through regression and correlation analyzes on the basis of the 2015-2021 period, and the effects of these indicators on stock returns. As a result, when MVA, CVA, CFROI and EVA are positive, economic profit is achieved and shareholder value is expected to increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chain hotels with $1 billion in market capitalization not only contribute to employment creation and indirectly become a driving force in the regeneration of local economies but also play an essential role in recovering local economies with their high revenue per available room (RevPAR) values. Besides, the financial stability of these hotel chains directly influences the popularity of destinations, resulting in an influx of tourists to nearby regions, which in turn generates an economic contribution to the overall development of the tourism industry. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to determine the financial factors that are affecting the RevPAR (RPR), their role in the industry, and the validity of the agency cost theory of nine chain hotels that have at least $1 billion in market capital listed in U.S. stock markets over the period 2013–2022. The results show that, in contrast to the debt service coverage ratio, receivables turnover ratio, and book value per share variables, the day sales outstanding ratio and current ratio have a negative impact on chain hotels' RevPAR.

- Abstract
Internal and external company information users (owners, managers, partners, credit institutions and organizations, investors, employees, etc.) use many tools to make the right decisions about the company. One of the tools in question is the DuPont Analysis technique, which is included in ratio analysis among financial analysis techniques. DuPont Analysis is an important analysis technique in evaluating the financial performance of companies. Because DuPont analysis offers companies the reasons why return on equity is low or high. As a result of literature research, there are many studies examining the financial performances of companies and sectors with DuPont analysis. It has been determined that the studies in question were carried out on the transportation, health, cement, food, beverage and tobacco, technology, manufacturing, finance, stationery, agriculture, tourism and real estate investment partnership sectors. However, during the literature review, the fact that no study was found that comprehensively examined BIST annual data regarding the transportation and storage sector and that it fills the gap in this field reveals the importance of the study. In this context, the purpose of this study is to examine the financial performances of companies operating in the BIST transportation and storage sector with DuPont Analysis and to contribute to the companies on the measures and improvement policies that should be taken for the future by evaluating the results obtained for the sector. It also helps both internal and external information users make accurate decisions about companies. For this purpose, data of 9 companies operating in the Borsa Istanbul (BIST) Transportation and Storage Sector between 2018 and 2022 were examined. Company-specific data was obtained from the Public Disclosure Platform and the reports on the companies' websites. The data obtained in the study were evaluated using the DuPont Analysis method. In this context, it has been determined that 2022 is the best year in terms of financial performance for the transportation and storage sector. Return on equity is one of the measures of how much profit the company's partners make in return for the capital they put in, that is, how many units of profit are created for each unit of capital. Therefore, it shows that the company earns more profit with less capital. However, with the measures and restrictions taken as a result of the Covid-19 epidemic, which occurred in 2020 and was declared a pandemic all over the world, it was found that the equity profitability of companies, especially those engaged in air transportation, was negative, in other words, they made a loss that year. - Abstract
This study includes the evaluation of the financial performance of companies operating in the IT sector registered in Borsa Istanbul. It is seen that the IT sector has a higher growth rate than other sectors and is developing rapidly. It can be said that this sector has become an important sector in terms of increasing Turkey's trade volume, contributing to economic growth and increasing international competitiveness. Considering these characteristics of IT sector enterprises, the financial evaluation of the enterprises, especially in terms of cash sufficiency, was prioritized as the motivation of the study. The aim of this study is to select the IT sector businesses that are considered successful and have a cash flow profile of 2 and evaluate them in terms of financial performance. For this purpose, the problems of the problem were solved by collecting data and applying analysis methods in order to research the subject in the IT sector and reveal the results. When national and international studies on financial performance evaluation with multi-criteria decision-making methods in the IT sector are examined, it has been determined that most of these studies are analyzed using accrual-based financial ratios as performance evaluation criteria. In this study, unlike other studies, financial performance evaluation was made by using a combination of cash and accrual-based criteria by selecting businesses that are assumed to have successful business characteristics with a cash flow profile of 2. Thus, an original study that can contribute to the literature has been presented. Businesses with Profile 2; According to the data obtained from the cash flow statement, it has positive cash flows from main activities and negative cash flows from investment and financing activities. The business is able to generate sufficient positive cash flow from its core activities to invest in long-term assets, reduce debt, and pay dividends. This profile reflects a successful business and is believed to be relatively common. When previous studies on cash flow profiles in different sectors are examined, it is seen that the majority of the results are concentrated in profile 2. For this reason, in this study, it was preferred to evaluate the financial performance of IT sector businesses with profile 2, which is the most common and successful business. In the implementation of the study, 31 businesses operating in the IT sector registered in Borsa Istanbul and whose data for the 2022-2023 period can be accessed were included in the research. First of all, all of the businesses included in the research were subjected to cash flow profile determination. Then, in accordance with the purpose of the study, the second stage of the analysis was started to evaluate the financial performance of 8 successful businesses with a cash flow profile of 2 for two consecutive years. At this stage, financial ratios used as financial success criteria were selected and used as research criteria. The reason for using these financial ratios in the study is that successful businesses operating in the IT sector with a cash flow profile of 2 are included in the analysis scope of the study and success is the main criterion. Multicriteria decision-making methods were used to rank the financial performance of businesses. First of all, criterion weights were determined using the entropy method. Afterwards, the financial performance of the businesses was evaluated over the years with the TOPSIS method, which ranks all the alternatives according to their closeness to the ideal solution. As a result of the study, it was determined that the company with the best financial performance in both 2022 and 2023 was Papilon Defense Technology and Trade (PAPIL), while the company with the lowest financial performance was Logo Yazılım Sanayi ve Ticaret (LOGO). It has been determined that these identified enterprises are different from the enterprises obtained in the results of previous studies conducted on the same sector. In addition, only 8 of the 31 businesses registered in the BIST IT sector were able to achieve a successful business profile in the years analyzed. It can be said that this result has some implications specifically for this sector. These inferences; It is listed as follows: businesses cannot use their assets efficiently, the level of profit making from the assets they own is low, and businesses may have problems in maintaining their existence. BANKING industry , *LOANS , *FINANCIAL crises , *FINANCIAL performance , *BANK deposits - Abstract
In the Turkish financial system; public, private and foreign capital deposit banks are classified according to their ownership structures. After the banking crises in the financial system, the share of foreign capital banks in the Turkish banking sector has increased significantly. Banks are the most important funding institutions for the real sector, and it is known that a crisis in the banking sector would seriously affect the real sector. The real sector's continued investments are important for the continuation of the country's economic growth and development. In this respect, the financial performance of banks in the Turkish banking system is also important. In the study, the financial performances of the top five private and foreign capital banks, which have a significant place in terms of asset size, are compared. Asset quality, liquidity, profitability and capital adequacy ratios are used as benchmarks and annual data for 2012-2022 are used as the analysis period. When evaluated on the basis of the ratios used in the study, no significant difference is found between the two groups in terms of profitability, no significant difference is found in terms of Total Loans/Total Assets and Non-Performing Loans/Total Loans in terms of asset quality, while a significant difference is found in favor of private capital banks on the basis of Total Loans/Total Deposits ratio. While a significant difference is found in favor of foreign capital banks in terms of liquidity ratios, it is concluded that foreign capital deposit banks performed better in terms of Equity/Total Assets ratio among capital adequacy ratios. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a detrimental impact on social, political, and economic facets, precipitating substantial shifts in societal structures and economic frameworks. The pandemic has also taken a toll on the airline passenger transportation sector. During the pandemic, airline travel underwent regulation, with reduced seat capacities and a transition from wide to narrow-body aircraft. Throughout this period, airline revenues experienced a decline while expenses escalated, causing a significant imbalance between income and expenses. This imbalance led to losses in operating activities for airlines. This study investigated the impact of the pandemic on airlines' expenses. Data were collected from the 2019-2022 financial statements of Turkish Airlines (THY) and Pegasus (PGSUS), which are traded on Borsa Istanbul. The study focused on revenues, costs of sales, gross profit, general administrative expenses, marketing costs, operating profits/losses, financing costs, profits/losses before tax from continuing operations, and net period profits/losses for the financial year. Trend, vertical, and ratio analyses were performed to evaluate the findings. The results showed that the expenses of and Pegasus increased drastically during the pandemic. Their revenues started to rise in 2021 and increased drastically in 2022. While they suffered losses due to high expenses during the pandemic, they showed a better profitability performance in 2022 than before the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study aims to investigate the impact of carbon emissions in the manufacturing sector on financial performance in Türkiye during the period of 2009-2020. To achieve this objective, models were developed where the variables representing financial performance were considered as dependent, and carbon emissions as an independent variable. The least squares method was utilized for model estimation. Financial performance indicators such as operating profit margin, gross profit margin, receipts, pre-tax profit/loss, total assets, return on equity, return on assets, profitability of sales, and asset turnover were used. According to the findings obtained from the estimation of the models, carbon emissions in the manufacturing sector statistically and positively affect the sector's operating profit margin, gross profit margin, receipts, pre-tax profit, after-tax profit, pre-tax profit, total assets, return on equity and return on assets. However, statistically significant findings regarding the impact of carbon emissions on the profitability of sales and asset turnover were not obtained. This result suggests that while carbon emissions do not directly act as a driving force for financial performance, they draws attention to the issue of carbon emissions in the activities of the sector and indicates that precautions should be taken regarding carbon emissions in the sector. The performance of the iron and steel sector, which is considered as the locomotive power in the industrialization processes of countries, is among the important indicators for economic development. The iron and steel sector is intensely related to the concepts of internationalization in trade, market economy and globalization. This intensive relationship makes the sector more sensitive to price fluctuations, economic shocks and economic crises. The financial and commercial advantages provided by joint stock companies operating in national economies and the reasons for this advantage are among the main issues that need to be examined. For this reason, in this study, the iron and steel enterprise, which has the title of a factory that builds factories, is analyzed in the 2018-2022 financial contagion effect period. The enterprise was evaluated separately as financial performance and operating performance. MEREC and COBRA methods, which are multi-criteria decision-making techniques, were utilized in the study. According to both performance studies, it was found that the company had the best performance in 2021. Considering the relationship and parallelism between the concepts of business performance and financial performance, the results obtained support this situation. The study concluded that the company was able to maintain its operational and economic efficiency under the impact of financial contagion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The financial performance of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) plays a crucial role in bank credit access of these enterprises and the economies of countries where they operate. However, firm' executives' Resource-based View (RBV) characteristics can differently affect the financial performance of SMEs that they manage, therefore, credit access of SMEs can differ. In this regard, this paper aims to analyze whether the impact of financial performance on bank access to finance differs depending on executives' educational status, gender, and sectoral experience or not. In line with this aim, this research collects data from 479 randomly selected respondents by directing an online questionnaire. After that, the research data is analyzed by employing a Binary Logistic Regression Test. According to the results, the impact of financial performance on credit access differs depending on the gender and sectoral experience of firms' executives. However, the educational status of firm executives does not play any role in the impact of financial performance on access to finance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research evaluates the correlation between the financial performances of seven insurance companies operating in Turkey from 2018 to 2022 and their risk of bankruptcy. In the study, data obtained from the year-end financial statements of the companies were used, weights were assigned to the criteria determined by the ENTROPY methodology, and the performance rankings of the companies were obtained using the WASPAS method. The Altman-Z model was applied to determine the risk of bankruptcy. The decisive criteria in the financial performance ranking are profitability ratios such as Asset Profitability, Equity Profitability, and Net Profit Margin. While Turkey Insurance and Anadolu Insurance's leadership positions in the sector were identified, Ray Insurance and Mapfre Insurance were determined as the companies showing the weakest performance. Although the research shows that financial performance affects the risk of bankruptcy, it also reveals that it is not the sole factor in determining the likelihood of bankruptcy. In this context, the evaluation of financial performance in the insurance industry should be considered as part of a more holistic risk assessment approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the impact of derivatives on risk management, financial performance, and firm value in non-financial firms from 2016-2021, spanning pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. It first examines firms’ derivatives usage intensity through annual reports, then assesses the direct effects using panel data analysis. According to derivatives usage intensity observations, it is seen that the approach of firms to use derivatives hasn’t changed based on the pandemic. Approximately %30 of firms stated that they use derivatives in risk management while other firms stated they use in-house methods in risk management. Moreover, according to the results of the panel data analysis, this study, which is based on limited data and examines the impact of the pandemic period, finds that the use of derivative instruments increases risk and negatively affects financial performance. On the other hand, any relationship between derivatives usage and firm value hasn’t been found to be statistically significant. These results suggest that derivatives are not an effective risk management tool for the sector, prompting firms to reconsider their risk management strategies and explore why derivatives fail to mitigate risk effectively. This study aims to empirically examining the effect of foreign exchange risk on financial performance, stock returns and profitability of firms. In this study, the effect of foreign exchange risk on firm performance was researched for 23 firms in BIST Informatics Index by using the quarterly data for 2014-2022 with the panel data method. Net foreign exchange position/shareholders' equity and net foreign exchange position/total assets indicated the foreign exchange risk whilst the return on assets, Tobin's Q, and the stock return showed the firm performance. The analysis was conducted by establishing 3 different models. According to the empirical data obtained in the study, it was discerned that the foreign exchange risk affected the firm profitability negatively and stock returns positively while its effect on the firm performance was not statistically significant. Also, it was found that the firm size affected the firm profitability and firm performance positively whilst its effect on stock returns was not statistically significant. Moreover, it was identified that the variable of leverage affected the firm profitability and firm performance negatively whereas its effect on stock returns was not statistically significant. As the world becomes more digitalized, it is clear that technological advancements have a significant impact on national economies. Evaluation of financial performance is crucial for securing the funding required for the growth of the technology sector. In this study, the financial performance of the firms in the Borsa Istanbul technology index is evaluated with TOPSIS and MABAC methods. The financial performance analysis of technology companies, which differ from other sector companies in terms of the return on investments and high borrowing levels, was carried out covering the years 2019-2022, and the weights of the financial ratios considered as evaluation criteria were obtained by the CRITIC method, which is an objective weighting method. As a result of the analysis, Papıl and Ard Group had the highest value in different methods and years, while Netaş had the lowest value. Escom and Kfeın were the companies with the highest fluctuations in the rankings over the years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The aim of this study is to reveal the relationship between companies' human resources practices (HRP) and financial performance (FP) indicators. For this aim, the data of 30 companies traded in the Borsa Istanbul (BIST) 30 Index between 2018 and 2022 are analyzed. Panel data analysis methods were used in the study. As a consequences of the analysis, it was concluded that asset size and sales revenue variables have a significant effect on ROA, ROE and Tobin's Q Ratio. On the other hand, HRP have a significant effect on ROA and ROE, but have no significant effect on Tobin's Q Ratio. It is concluded that the number of employees variable has a significant effect only on ROA but not on ROE and Tobin's Q Ratio. A limited number of studies with this scope and content have been found in the national literature. In this context, it is considered that the study will contribute to the literature and practitioners in terms of the results obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of changes in Bitcoin price on the financial performance of banks. In this direction, the quarterly data of the 10 banks in the BIST Bank index between the years 2017-2022 has been determined as the research period. Panel Data Regression analysis was used to analyze the data for the determination of financial performance and to determine the effect investigated. Before applying the regression analysis, correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the variables and the existence of a negative relationship between the variables was determined. Then, two models were created for Panel regression analysis. As a result of the analysis of the models, while there was no significant relationship between the independent variable Bitcoin price and the dependent variables in both models, it was concluded that there was a negative and significant relationship between the control variable and the dependent variables expressing financial performance.
