Introduction: Mechanized endodontic treatment is an advent that has been constantly evolving. Objective: to characterize the instruments through scanning electron microscopy and perform mechanical tests of 45º bending, buckling and microhardness of ProTaper instruments. Materials and Methods: 10 nickel titanium instruments from each System were used: ProTaper Universal (PTUN), ProTaper Gold (PTGO), Protaper Ultimate (PTUL) and Protaper Next (PTNE). The SEM analysis was carried out using a SEM FEG quanta FEI 250. For the 45º bending and buckling tests, an EMIC LD 200MF universal testing machine was used. Vickers microhardness was performed using a Micromet 2003 Bueler microhardness meter. The results were subjected to the Shapiro-Wilks normality test for subsequent ANOVA testing, the significance level adopted was 5%. Results: The instruments studied presented the following order in relation to flexibility: PTUL>PTGO>PTUN>PTNE. The buckling resistance of the instruments presented the following order: PTUN>PTGO>PTNE=PTUL. The Vickers microhardness presented the following order PTUN= PTNE>PTGO=PTUL. Conclusion: PTUL instruments were the most flexible and PTUN were the most resistant to buckling. The microhardness of controlled memory instruments (gold wire) presents a softer alloy. The instruments had a good surface finish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
