Although supply chain ecosystem health (SCE Health) is receiving attention in relation to environmental uncertainty, its conception and measurement are largely undocumented, and how to pursue SCE Health under environmental turbulence is unclear. Supply chain learning (SCL) is an important way to build dynamic capabilities, and whether it can empower the achievement of SCE Health is worthy of investigative study. Therefore, grounded in the dynamic capabilities theory, a survey data-based structural equation modelling (SEM) approach is employed. Based on four experts' opinions and an in-depth literature review, 47 measurement items (11 for SCL, 28 for SCE Health, and 8 for environmental turbulence) were identified in the questionnaire design. Further, 208 valid questionnaires from the field survey of supply chain management (SCM)-related firms in China were collected and used for SEM analysis. The results show that the internal learning of SCL stimulates its external learning. SCL empowers the pursuit of SCE Health, which is strengthened under higher environmental turbulence. The aquaculture industry is growing rapidly and plays a huge role in bridging the global demand gap for fish and other aquatic foods. It is a vital contributor of valuable nutrients and economic benefits. Aquaculture and fisheries provide a means of livelihood to an estimated 58.5 million people globally, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. However, the sector is impacted by the ubiquity of microplastics and toxic chemicals. Although many studies have reported plastic pollution in the aquaculture environment, less attention has been paid to the coexistence of toxic chemicals with plastic particles and the role of climate change in aquaculture food contamination. This review evaluates the occurrence of microplastics in organisms, feeds, water, and sediment in the aquaculture ecosystem and the detection and hazardous effects of toxic chemical contaminants. We also highlight novel insights into the role of climate change in plastic and chemical contamination of aquaculture organisms and ecosystems. We report that the extent of aquaculture's contribution to global climate change and global plastic pollution is yet to be adequately quantified and requires further investigation for appropriate risk assessment and prevention of food safety crisis. Possible mitigation strategies for the highlighted pollution problems were suggested, and some identified gaps for future research were indicated. Zooplankton monitoring is important for understanding their population dynamics and life history, ecosystem health, and environmental changes. Compared with traditional morphological identification, environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis allows for more sensitive and efficient monitoring of zooplankton diversity. Previous eDNA studies have primarily used metabarcoding approaches to reveal their richness and composition, whereas its performance in predicting zooplankton abundance remains understudied. We conducted water and bulk sampling in Lake Biwa, Japan, showing that the number of sequence reads by metabarcoding moderately correlated with eDNA concentrations estimated by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). In addition, the eDNA read number was significantly related to cladoceran and copepod abundance estimated by microscopy sorting, although there remained too much uncertainty in the read-abundance relationship. Moreover, there was a significant difference in species composition between eDNA metabarcoding and sorting. Although our results indicated the potential applicability of eDNA metabarcoding for quantifying multiple zooplankton abundance, several methodological validations in eDNA metabarcoding would also be required to optimize its performance in the future. Antibiotics are increasingly found in urban lakes, posing significant ecological risks to lake ecosystems. The impact of sponge city facilities on urban flood control is significant; however, their influence on the exposure characteristics and risks associated with antibiotics in urban inland lakes remains unclear. This study investigated the exposure characteristics and evaluated the ecological risks of 15 antibiotics across seven lakes of Fuzhou (as the target of sponge city) in different seasons, in comparison to non-sponge cities. The results revealed that 12 antibiotics were consistently detectable across all lakes, with concentrations ranging from non-detectable (ND) to 20.61 ng/L, with sulfamethoxazole (SMX) emerging as the predominant contaminant. Most antibiotics exhibited higher concentrations in the dry season, attributed to environmental conditions, biological mechanisms, and their physicochemical properties. SMX, tetracycline (TTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and ciprofloxacin (CIP) posed moderate to high ecological risks, with risk quotient (RQ) values of 0.46, 0.14, 0.17, and 0.61, respectively, while the remaining antibiotics presented lower ecological risks in both seasons. Notably, the RQ values for TTC, OTC, and CIP were elevated during the dry season, whereas SMX displayed a higher RQ value in the wet season, indicating an increased ecological risk during the dry months. In comparison to non-sponge cities, sponge cities exhibited significantly lower concentrations of nearly all antibiotics, particularly during the wet season (p ≤ 0.05). Moreover, over 85% of the antibiotics in non-sponge cities were classified as high risk, contrasted with only 55% in sponge cities, underscoring the heightened ecological risks associated with non-sponge urban designs. This study provides critical insights for controlling antibiotic pollution in the lakes of Fuzhou and serves as a valuable reference for maintaining aquatic ecosystem health through the implementation of sponge city infrastructure. Snow cover is a relevant component of the Earth's climate system, influencing water supply, ecosystem health, and natural hazard management. This study aims to monitor daily snow cover in the Cantabrian Mountains using Sentinel-2, Landsat (5–8), and MODIS data processed in Google Earth Engine (GEE). The main purpose is to extract metrics on snow cover extent, duration, frequency, and trends. Key findings reveal significant spatial and temporal variability in Snow-Cover Days (SCDs) across the region. Over the past 23 years, there has been a notable overall decrease in snow-cover days (−0.26 days per year, and −0.92 days per year in areas with a significant trend). Altitudes between 1000–2000 m a.s.l. showed marked decreases. The analysis of Snow-Cover Fraction (SCF) indicates high interannual variability and records the highest values at the end of January and the beginning of February. The effectiveness of satellite data and GEE is highlighted in providing detailed, long-term snow cover analysis, despite some limitations in steep slopes, forests, and prolonged cloud-cover areas. These results underscore the capacity for continuous monitoring with satellite imagery, especially in areas with sparse snow observation networks, where studies could be enhanced with more localized studies or additional ground-based observations. Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an essential metric for valuating ecosystem health and soil erosion. Traditional ground-measuring methods are inadequate for large-scale FVC monitoring, while remote sensing-based estimation approaches face issues such as spatial scale discrepancies between ground truth data and image pixels, as well as limited sample representativeness. This study proposes a method for FVC estimation integrating uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) and satellite imagery using machine learning (ML) models. First, we assess the vegetation extraction performance of three classification methods (OBIA-RF, threshold, and K-means) under UAV imagery. The optimal method is then selected for binary classification and aggregated to generate high-accuracy FVC reference data matching the spatial resolutions of different satellite images. Subsequently, we construct FVC estimation models using four ML algorithms (KNN, MLP, RF, and XGBoost) and utilize the SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) method to assess the impact of spectral features and vegetation indices (VIs) on model predictions. Finally, the best model is used to map FVC in the study region. Our results indicate that the OBIA-RF method effectively extract vegetation information from UAV images, achieving an average precision and recall of 0.906 and 0.929, respectively. This method effectively generates high-accuracy FVC reference data. With the improvement in the spatial resolution of satellite images, the variability of FVC data decreases and spatial continuity increases. The RF model outperforms others in FVC estimation at 10 m and 20 m resolutions, with R2 values of 0.827 and 0.929, respectively. Conversely, the XGBoost model achieves the highest accuracy at a 30 m resolution, with an R2 of 0.847. This study also found that FVC was significantly related to a number of satellite image VIs (including red edge and near-infrared bands), and this correlation was enhanced in coarser resolution images. The method proposed in this study effectively addresses the shortcomings of conventional FVC estimation methods, improves the accuracy of FVC monitoring in soil erosion areas, and serves as a reference for large-scale ecological environment monitoring using UAV technology. Across Ontario, Canada, there are over 30 000 km of transmission line corridors. With proper planning and ongoing maintenance and monitoring, these corridors have the potential to be transformed into native meadow, offering vital pathways connecting natural heritage systems and supporting wildlife movement, while promoting biodiversity, natural functions, and ecosystem health. In 2019, seeding trials were established in the Gatineau Hydro Corridor in east Toronto where a long-term meadow creation project (The Meadoway) is ongoing, to evaluate the effectiveness of herbicide treatment (glyphosate), sowing method, and sowing season on seeding success with the goal of informing site-specific meadow creation techniques. Seed mixes included a variety of native grasses and forbs and were dominated by copper savannah grass (Sorghastrum nutans), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), and switch grass (Panicum virgatum). Overall, fall or winter seeding with herbicide led to the highest seeding success. There was no difference in the effectiveness of hand seeding or using the seed drill. The results of this work provide valuable insights into effective seeding techniques to improve seeding success and also highlight the benefits of in situ experimentation to inform meadow creation techniques. The crucial challenge in arid/developed endorheic basins is to balance agricultural water demands with ecosystem health. This study addresses this dilemma by developing a semi-distributed socio-hydrological model for the basins using monthly water balance coupled with annual community sensitivity (CS)/response models. The central research question focuses on whether the degradation of lakes in the Tashk-Bakhtegan basin, our selected case study, can shift the community's attitude towards allocating water resources for environmental rather than agricultural purposes. Given the basin's vastness and complex water access, individuals hold diverse environmental attitudes on lake degradation. Upon model calibration, it becomes evident that downstream areas exhibit a CS variable 2.4 times higher than upstream areas, with annual fluctuations ranging from 1.15 to 6.34. Remarkably, the findings underscore a gradual transformation in downstream attitudes, where increasing CS has shifted their perspective towards prioritizing the well-being of the lake, while upstream residents continue to prioritize agro-economic benefits. The study explores phytoplankton diversity and community structure as indicators of Karanja Estuary health. Surface water samples were collected between January 2022 and March 2023, revealing 139 phytoplankton species across three stations and seasons. Cluster and multidimensional scaling analysis delineated three distinct spatiotemporal clusters within the estuary. Peak phytoplankton abundance and diversity during the post-monsoon period contributed to increased salinity, pH and optimal nutrients. The monsoon season witnessed the lowest phytoplankton abundance due to decreased water transparency and light penetration. Biota-environment (BIO-ENV) analysis highlighted water temperature, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia, silicate and chlorophyll-a (ρ = 0.9084) as significant factors influencing phytoplankton distribution. Canonical correspondence analysis unveiled significant correlations between Skeletonema costatum, Skeletonema sp., Thalassionema frauenfeldii and Thalassionema nitzschioides with nitrate, ammonia, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved oxygen. Diatom species Asterionellopsis glacialis, Chaetoceros sp., Ditylum brightwellii, Ditylum sol and Pseudo-nitzschia pungens were associated with total phosphorus, chlorophyll-a and silicate. High BOD values suggest a significant presence of organic matter, potentially depleting oxygen through decomposition. A high Shannon–Weiner diversity index implies a diverse phytoplankton community with multiple species, indicating ecosystem resilience and stability. This situation may arise when a stressed ecosystem maintains diversity with pollution-tolerant species, which may be temporary and lead to detrimental long-term consequences. The ecological quality status (EcoQS) using six phytoplankton community indices concluded that all the stations ranged from ‘high’ to ‘bad’ condition, with disagreement among the six indices. This study employs a holistic approach, integrating physical, chemical and biological parameters with multivariate analysis techniques to acknowledge the complexity of ecosystem health. This study explored the characteristics of benthic animal communities in different water functional areas and the driving factors affecting changes in the community structure of four water functional zones of the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River: the protection, buffer, reserve, and development and utilization zones. The results showed that the alpha diversity of the benthic animal communities in the protected and reserved zones was significantly higher than that of the buffer and development and utilization zones, and the benthic animal community structure differed significantly across different water functional zones. These zones indirectly affected the community of benthic fauna due to their environmental heterogeneity. Furthermore, the average degree, map density, and average clustering coefficient of the molecular ecological network were highest in the protected zone. The average path length was shorter, and there were more types and numbers of key species in the benthic animal community in the protected zone, indicating high levels of connectivity and efficiency in transferring substances, energy, and information between benthic animals. These results will provide a scientific basis for studying the characteristics and driving factors of benthic animal communities in the Yangtze River and have important significance for assessing and restoring aquatic ecology in the Yangtze River Basin. Alternative perspectives on the maintenance of biodiversity and the assembly of ecological communities suggest that both processes cannot be investigated simultaneously. In this concept and synthesis, we challenge this view by presenting major theoretical advances in structural stability and permanence theory. These advances, which provide complementary views, allow studying the short‐ and long‐term dynamics of ecological communities as changes in species richness, composition, and abundance. Here, the global attractor, technically named informational structure (IS), is the central element to construct from information of species' intrinsic growth rates and their strength and sign of interactions. The global attractor has four main properties: (1) It contains all the limits of what is feasible and unfeasible of the dynamical behavior of an ecological system, therefore, (2) it provides a thorough characterization of all combinations of species' richness and composition in which species can coexist (i.e., feasible and stable equilibrium), (3) as well as all connections (paths) of assembly between coexisting communities. Importantly, (4) such topology of coexisting communities and their connections changes when environmental (abiotic and biotic) variation affects the ability of species to grow and interact with others. Overall, these four properties allow switching from a traditional evaluation of species coexistence at equilibrium to a much more realistic nonequilibrium perspective where changes in the structure of the global attractor underlie the transient ecological dynamics. Several fields in ecology can benefit from the study of an IS. For instance, it can serve to evaluate community responses after the end of a perturbation, to design restoration trajectories, to study the consequences of biological invasions on the persistence of native species within communities, or to assess ecosystem health status. We illustrate this latter possibility with empirical observations of 7 years in Mediterranean annual grasslands. We document that extremely wet or dry years generate ISs supporting few coexisting communities and few assembly paths. The remaining communities distinguish winners from losers of ongoing climate change and indicate the limits to future community assembly opportunities. Introduction: Multiple factors, including human disturbance and environmental change, have caused a significant global mangrove resource loss. Therefore, the Chinese government has restructured mangrove habitats and restored the ecosystem functionality through establishing naturally protected mangrove areas. Despite efforts spanning several years, over 90% of mangrove forests in China have been now integrated into the natural protected area system, with the health status and influencing factors of mangrove ecosystem remaining a pertinent subject for further exploration. Given the intricacies of mangrove ecosystems with complex nonlinear relationships among evaluation factors, it is imperative to adopt scientific methodologies to assess their health status. Methods: To illustrate this, we conducted a mangrove ecosystem health assessment of natural protected areas of Guangdong Province, China. By employing a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method and establishing an index system for mangrove ecosystem health assessment. Results: The results revealed the following findings. (1) Various factors exert differing degrees of influence on mangrove ecosystem health. Notably, the mangrove habitat pattern (weight 47.95%), bird diversity (weight 20.97%), mangrove community (weight 14.31%), water environment (weight 11.76%), and soil sedimentary environment (weight 5.01%) were identified. (2) Overall, the mangrove ecosystem within protected areas of Guangdong exhibited unhealthy signs. There were 4 healthy protected areas (20.00%), 4 areas classified as sub-healthy (20.00%), and 12 were deemed unhealthy (60.00%). (3) Key factors contributing to the compromised health of mangrove ecosystems included the homogenization of mangrove plants, decreased habitat diversity, and exogenous pollution. Discussion: By planting local mangrove species, scientifically managing the ratio of mangrove cover area to mudflat area, and controlling pollution sources and treating pollutants, the structure of the mangrove ecosystem can be optimized, and the quality of mangrove forest can be improved. These findings can enhance mangrove ecosystem management practices, assist mangrove natural reserve managers in performing targeted mangrove ecological protection and restoration, promote effective management, and contribute to the realization of "harmonious symbiosis" between humanity and nature within mangrove ecosystems. Selenium (Se) is a vital trace element integral to numerous biological processes in both plants and animals, with significant impacts on soil health and ecosystem stability. This review explores how soil microorganisms facilitate Se transformations through reduction, oxidation, methylation, and demethylation processes, thereby influencing the bioavailability and ecological functions of Se. The microbial reduction of Se compounds, particularly the conversion of selenate and selenite to elemental Se nanoparticles (SeNPs), enhances Se assimilation by plants and impacts soil productivity. Key microbial taxa, including bacteria such as Pseudomonas and Bacillus, exhibit diverse mechanisms for Se reduction and play a substantial role in the global Se cycle. Understanding these microbial processes is essential for advancing soil management practices and improving ecosystem health. This review underscores the intricate interactions between Se and soil microorganisms, emphasizing their significance in maintaining ecological balance and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Habitat quality (HQ) serves as a pivotal metric for assessing biodiversity and ecosystem health, with alterations in land use driven by human activities posing direct implications on HQ and ecological sustainability within river basins. Prior research on HQ has predominantly centered on historical land use changes, neglecting the comprehensive consideration of future land use transformations and ecological zoning strategies' influence on HQ. Consequently, this investigation simulates potential land use shifts in the Min River Basin across various future scenarios, leveraging the integration of PLUS and InVEST models, quantitatively dissects HQ's responsiveness to these changes and delves into the spatial differentiation dynamics underlying these responses, while also exploring the drivers behind such differentiation. Synergizing with the Human Footprint Index (HFI), the study devises a rational ecological zoning plan tailored to the region and outlines targeted control measures for each zone. The results of the study showed that: 1) the east-central part of the Min River Basin was subject to a greater degree of human interference, and the trend of interconversion between grassland, forest land, and cropland was relatively significant, with construction land mainly originating from the transfer of cropland; 2) from 2000 to 2020, average HQ scores for priority protected zones, priority recovery zones, and appropriate development zones stood at 0.9372, 0.2697, and 0.6098, respectively, accompanied by a rise in the proportion of low and moderate HQ areas to 15% and 17%; (3) DEM and Slope were the main drivers affecting HQ, and their explanatory power reached 0.519 and 0.426, respectively; (4) in comparison to a natural development scenario (ND), the planning protection scenario (PP) offers greater promise for ecological preservation and sustainable development within the Min River Basin. The Wadi El-Rayan lakes are important aquatic environments located at the border of the great North African Sahara. Quantifying the temporal changes in these lakes due to natural and/or anthropogenic stressors is critical when assessing potential impacts on aquatic ecosystem health and the sustainability of fisheries. To detect the changes in fish communities and their drivers, the landing composition of the Wadi El-Rayan lakes over the past 30 years was quantitatively analyzed. The areas of the lakes dramatically decreased from 110 km2 in 1991 to 73 km2 in 2019. The loss of the lake area was attributed to climate warming, where the evaporation rate exceeded the volume of recharge and the recharge decreased due to an increase in agriculture and aquaculture. The total landing significantly increased in the past three decades due to an increase in the fishing effort (number of licensed boats). Nile tilapia, mullet, and grass carp dominated the landings. The pelagic-to-demersal ratio indicated a shift in the fish community composition towards demersal species. This shift was attributed to an increase in the eutrophication level. The fish communities of the landing data were clustered into four distinct groups. These clusters were significantly differentiated (p < 0.001) in both a PERMANOVA test and a PCA plot. There was a gradual replacement of the dominant species among these clusters. The most recent cluster (2018–2019) was characterized by rare species dominating the community. This shift in species composition suggests that target taxa may have been overexploited. The total landing also decreased, which may have been a result of climate warming. Furthermore, the presence of alien and warm-water species significantly increased. As rivers face growing environmental challenges due to climate change and the construction of artificial structures, it is essential that we improve river ecosystems to maintain their ecological functions and preserve the health of aquatic habitats. The aim of this study was to assess the aquatic ecosystem health of the lower reaches of the Tan River. We employed the Physical Habitat Simulation System and Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System to calculate the ecological flow rate based on the weighted usable area (WUA) of Zacco platypus, which is a representative fish species in the Tan River, and the flow rate relationship curves. By analyzing the flow rates in the Tan River across different seasons from 2012 to 2021, we determined that the seasonal optimal ecological flow rate was 10.21–10.27 m3/s. Meanwhile, the WUAs for spring, summer, and autumn and winter were 90–100%, 95–100%, and 75–100%, respectively. Despite meeting the ecological flow criteria for summer, fall, and winter over 50% of the time, spring fell short at 41%; hence, the Tan River flow rates should be secured particularly in spring. Introduction: Identifying and exploiting stewardship and financing challenges in Iran's health insurance system as an ecosystem is essential to achieving predetermined goals. This study aimed to determine the challenges and strategies in the Iranian health insurance ecosystem to provide relevant evidence to healthcare managers and policymakers to improve its functions and perform necessary reforms. Method: This qualitative study was conducted at the national level in Iran. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the directed content analysis method. The study participants included managers and experts in health insurance and faculty of universities of medical sciences, who were selected by purposive sampling. Results: The challenges and strategies expressed by participants were categorized into two functions: stewardship and financing. Four main themes, ten subthemes, 22 challenges, and 24 strategies were identified in the stewardship function, along with three main themes, 12 subthemes, 17 challenges, and 16 strategies in the financing function. The major challenge in the Iranian health insurance ecosystem was the complexity and conflict of interests between multiple actors with different roles, which led to fragmentation, diverse structures, and a gap between other functions and objectives, hindering the effective functioning of the ecosystem. Conclusion: In order to deal with the challenges of the health insurance ecosystem, it is suggested to create a coherent insurance system through a single utility system, and by paying more attention to health-oriented services, the health insurance ecosystem becomes a health-oriented system instead of being treatment-oriented. In addition, in order to strengthen the governance of the country's health insurance ecosystem, the number of actors with multiple roles should be reduced and the roles of the actors should be clarified and separated in order to prevent conflicts of interest and structural corruption in this ecosystem. Restoration is effective for improving ecosystem health and protecting biodiversity. However, restoration initiatives often neglect socioeconomic dimensions that affect local communities. When these factors are included, they are often under the purview of managers whose perspectives of public engagement remain understudied. Here, we focused on mangroves and surveyed restoration project managers in Latin America and the Caribbean to explore if and how they have engaged in socioeconomic best practices such as including the community, local knowledge, and social monitoring. We also sought to understand how these activities related to perceptions of project outcomes. Most managers (n = 182) reported that they engaged in some best practices, such as community engagement in various project stages and incorporating local information. Differences existed as to which types of information were included, which project stages included the community, and how frequently the community was involved. Overall, managers, especially those who engaged the community more frequently and throughout the entire restoration process, believed projects were successful and provided numerous community benefits. However, despite the reported number of benefits, less than half of the respondents conducted social monitoring to assess the actualization of these benefits or other social indicators. We provide suggestions for how mangrove restoration projects, and restoration efforts more broadly, can increase the inclusion of communities, their knowledge, and social monitoring to better assess the achievement of project outcomes. Understanding and preserving the deep sea ecosystems is paramount for marine conservation efforts. Automated object (deep-sea biota) classification can enable the creation of detailed habitat maps that not only aid in biodiversity assessments but also provide essential data to evaluate ecosystem health and resilience. Having a significant source of labelled data helps prevent overfitting and enables training deep learning models with numerous parameters. In this paper, we contribute to the establishment of a significant deep-sea remotely operated vehicle (ROV) image classification dataset with 3994 images featuring deep-sea biota belonging to 33 classes. We manually label the images through rigorous quality control with human-in-the-loop image labelling. Leveraging data from ROV equipped with advanced imaging systems, our study provides results using novel deep-learning models for image classification. We use deep learning models including ResNet, DenseNet, Inception, and Inception-ResNet to benchmark the dataset that features class imbalance with many classes. The intensifying loss of coral reefs from global climate change and local stressors has seen international commitments targeted at conservation and repair, for example the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Fulfilling these targets requires decisions to be made on where, when, and how to act, ultimately dictating where limited resources will be deployed. Every choice on action or inaction toward our ocean has direct and indivisible consequences not only for the health of marine ecosystems but also for the health of humans, particularly those who directly depend on marine habitats, both culturally and economically. The well‐being of the environment, humans, and animals is interlinked, co‐dependent, and even co‐produced, as has already been acknowledged by One Health approaches, which endorse a cross‐ and trans‐disciplinary view to health. Coral reefs epitomie how tightly intertwined ecosystem health and the fate of the human and nonhuman communities that depend on them are. A field that thus far remains poorly considered is a human rights‐based approach to coral reef protection. A human rights‐based approach implements human rights obligations, including the recently affirmed right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, while embedding principles of accountability, nondiscrimination, participation, and empowerment for local and Indigenous communities that ensure effectiveness and meaningful stakeholder engagement. Tying the protection of coral reef ecosystems to human rights emphasises the importance of healthy ecosystems to human well‐being and thus the inevitable connection between nonhuman and human life. The general failure to consider coral reef protection through a human rights‐based approach is a missed opportunity to expedite reef protection while simultaneously advancing climate justice for both humans and nonhumans. The 'blue economy' is slowly emerging as a catch-all concept that captures the goals of sustaining economic development opportunities while simultaneously maintaining ocean ecosystem health. However, identifying the scope and boundaries of the blue economy has proven to be a challenging task. The aim of this article is to provide a new approach to finding a practical definition of the blue economy. Social equity is noted as the legal component and balancing mechanism that operates between the economy and the environment. This legal compensation mechanism has so far only been rudimentarily elaborated on in governance texts and must be given concrete form through legal methods and, in particular, through the creation of an institutional and procedural framework. The article introduces the idea that an advanced legal concept for the blue economy can be realised by using existing administrative processes and by strengthening the participation of private actors within these processes. Wildfires have become increasingly common across the United States in recent decades, with significant implications for ecosystem health and sustainability. The viability and metabolic activity of soil bacteria are key for maintaining global nitrogen-cycling processes and are likely to be impacted as burn severity continues to increase. To this end, wildfire-affected soils were studied to examine the impact on nitrogen-cycling bacteria in soils affected by low, moderate, and high wildfire severities. This objective was achieved by characterizing soil bacterial communities in control (i.e., unburned) and burned soils collected one year following the Woolsey wildfire (Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, CA, USA) using Illumina MiSeq 16S sequencing and profiling nitrogen-cycling gene expression using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Six families and 17 genera were significantly (Spearman rs > |0.4|; p < 0.05) negatively associated with wildfire severity, and three families and six genera were significantly positively associated with wildfire severity. Many of these taxa contain species that are known to be critical contributors to maintaining global nitrogen cycles. NosZ and NirS nitrifying genes had significantly lower transcription rates in high-severity samples compared with control and low/moderate-severity samples. Collectively, these results suggest that high-severity wildfires significantly negatively alter the community structures and functions of nitrogen-cycling bacteria, which may have significant ramifications for ecosystem recovery in postwildfire landscapes. To effectively address ecosystem health risks, it is crucial to use detection methods that efficiently cover vast areas with good spatial resolution. These methods should enhance understanding of how phytoplankton blooms might evolve due to climate change. Satellite Ocean Color sensors are advantageous for detecting and monitoring phytoplankton blooms over time. This study uses the Inherent Optical Properties (IOP) index, which considers light absorption by phytoplankton (Ab_phy) and by detritus plus colored dissolved organic matter (Ab_adg), to detect phytoplankton blooms in six subareas within the San Matías Gulf (SMG; Patagonia, Argentina). The findings reveal a significant increase in bloom alerts over the last 20 years in the northwestern and southwestern subareas. Temporal changes in chlorophyll a (Chla) and sea surface temperature (SST) were observed, both showing an increase over the studied period. Environmental features like the diffusive attenuation coefficient (Kd_490) and Ab_phy also showed positive trends in four of the six subareas. The positive trends in SST and Kd_490 suggest a potential reduction in the euphotic zone depth. Additionally, the presence of phytoplankton biomass, indicated by Chla and Ab_phy, is linked to reduced light penetration in the water column due to absorption by the cells and self-shading. A decrease in Ab_adg was observed, while photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) showed no significant trend over the last two decades. These patterns could significantly impact the frequency and timing of phytoplankton blooms, altering their community composition and phenology. Such changes have profound implications for the entire marine food web and the ecosystem services within the SMG. The East China Sea frequently experiences red tide outbreaks, significantly impacting marine carbon sink dynamics and ecosystem health. This study examines the temporal and spatial variations of red tide events in the East China Sea 2012 -2021, utilizing MODIS remote sensing imagery with a focus on summer outbreaks. Using the Two-Step algorithm, we assess surface particle organic carbon (POC) levels in red tide-affected areas, providing crucial insights into the carbon sink potential and distribution patterns of phytoplankton. Key findings include: (1) The largest red tide outbreak area occurred in 2015, with substantial fluctuations observed along the Zhejiang coast compared to the more stable Yangtze River estuary, especially in 2018 and 2020. (2) Surface POC concentrations reached their peak at 404.37 g m−3 in the Yangtze River estuary in 2021 and 359.83 g m−3 along the Zhejiang coast in 2017, with the lowest values recorded in 2013 and 2015. (3) Spatially, The distribution of severe algal bloom and higher concentrations of POC are observed along the coastal areas of the Yangtze River estuary and Zhejiang-Fujian, but with different causes. Streamflow regimes that maintain vital functions and processes of aquatic ecosystems are critical to sustaining ecosystem health. In rivers with altered flow regimes, restoring components of the natural flow regime is predicted to conserve freshwater biodiversity by supporting ecological functions and geomorphological processes to which native communities are adapted. However, the effectiveness of environmental flow restoration is poorly understood because of inadequate monitoring and uncertainty in ecological responses to managed changes in specific, quantifiable aspects of the annual streamflow regime. Here, we used time series models to analyze 25 years of fish assemblage data collected before and after environmental flow implementation in a dammed river in California, USA. We examined the response of the fish community to changes in individual components of the flow regime known to support ecosystem functions. We found that as functional flow components shifted toward their predicted natural range, the quasi‐extinction risk (likelihood of population declines of >80%) decreased for the native fish assemblage. Following environmental flow implementation, observed changes toward natural ranges of dry season duration, fall pulse flow magnitude, and wet season timing each reduced quasi‐extinction risk by at least 40% for the native assemblage. However, functional flow components that shifted away from their predicted natural range, including lower spring recession flows and higher dry season baseflow, resulted in greater quasi‐extinction risk for native species. In contrast, non‐native species decreased in abundance when flow components shifted toward predicted natural ranges and increased when components shifted away from their natural range. Although most functional flow components remained outside of their natural range following environmental flow implementation, our results indicate that even moderate shifts toward a natural flow regime can benefit native and suppress non‐native fish species. Overall, this study provides the most compelling evidence to date of the effectiveness of functional environmental flows in supporting native fish recovery in a highly regulated river. Water temperature plays a crucial role in aquatic ecosystem health, affecting oxygen solubility, organism metabolism, and overall water quality. This study evaluates Linear Interpolation, Polynomial, and Gaussian Models for predicting the Temperature Change Sub-Index in a Water Quality Index (WQI). Using a dataset from NSF-WQI, we propose a new formula based on polynomial and Gaussian approaches, offering improved accuracy over the traditional linear interpolation method for better water quality assessment. The Gaussian Model 1 emerged as the most accurate, with a 97.54% accuracy and a mean error of 2.46, outperforming the Cubic Polynomial and Fourth-Degree Polynomial Models, which achieved accuracies of 94.60% and 96.03%, respectively. The Gaussian Model's ability to capture peak characteristics and symmetrical declines makes it particularly effective for applications requiring precise water quality predictions. The integration of Gaussian Model 1 into IoT-enabled realtime monitoring systems presents significant potential, enabling continuous, accurate predictions critical for managing sensitive aquatic environments. However, the study acknowledges limitations, including the narrow data range that may limit Model generalizability and the complexity of higher-degree polynomial models, which could reduce practical applicability. Future research should focus on validating these Models across more diverse datasets, exploring hybrid Models that combine Gaussian and polynomial strengths, and enhancing computational efficiency to support broader realtime applications. Global warming driven by climate change has profound impacts on nitrogen dynamics in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The increased emissions of greenhouse gases alter the distribution and availability of nitrogen, which is a critical nutrient for all living organisms. This review examines the connections between climate change and nitrogen cycling, highlighting the adverse effects on ecosystem health and productivity. The proliferation of nitrogen pollution due to agricultural runoff, industrial effluents, and urban wastewater aggravates eutrophication, leading to significant environmental and economic consequences. The imbalance in nitrogen availability not only affects plant growth and soil fertility but also disrupts aquatic ecosystems, resulting in harmful algal blooms and hypoxic conditions. Effective mitigation and adaptation strategies are essential to addressing these challenges. Sustainable agricultural practices, such as precision farming and the use of slow-release fertilizers, along with robust policies and innovative technologies, like biochar application and nitrification inhibitors, are essential in managing nitrogen levels. This study aims to comprehensively understand the Gosikhurd Dam ecosystem (GDE) ecosystem by employing the Ecopath with Ecosim software (version 6.6.5) to construct a trophic mass balancing model. This model consisted of 16 functional groups of organisms, and their interactions and trophic levels were explored. The study focuses on various performance indicators to assess the ecosystem's maturity and complexity. To achieve these objectives, monthly fish samples were collected from June 2022 to May 2023. Performance indicators such as the connectance index (CI), system omnivory index (SOI), Finn's cycling index (FCI), mean path length (FML), ascendency, overhead, and Shannon diversity index were calculated to assess ecosystem maturity and complexity. The Finn's cycling index (FCI) and the mean path length (FML) were calculated as 1.81 and 2.20, respectively, indicating the ecosystem's responsiveness to environmental changes and overall system health and stability. Ascendency and overhead values were also analysed, with ascendency being relatively higher (41.58%), reflecting a system that utilises less than half of its total capacity. The overhead value (58.42%) indicated that the ecosystem is relatively stable and capable of adapting to external perturbations. Furthermore, the Shannon diversity index was 1.67, illustrating less diversity and validating the ecosystem's immaturity. The study identifies critical species and their roles in shaping the ecosystem dynamics, highlighting the importance of zooplankton, zoobenthos, and tilapia as keystone species. These indices propound that GDE is in its developmental stage and lacks complexity compared to mature ecosystems. The increasing demand for mineral resources has generated mine tailings with heavy metals (HM) that negatively impact human and ecosystem health. Therefore, it is necessary to implement strategies that promote the immobilization or elimination of HM, like phytoremediation. However, the toxic effect of metals may affect plant establishment, growth, and fitness, reducing phytoremediation efficiency. Therefore, adding organic amendments to mine tailings, such as biochar, can favor the establishment of plants, reducing the bioavailability of HM and its subsequent incorporation into the food chain. Here, we evaluated HM bioaccumulation, biomass, morphological characters, chlorophyll content, and genotoxic damage in the herbaceous Crotalaria pumila to assess its potential for phytostabilization of HM in mine tailings. The study was carried out for 100 days on plants developed under greenhouse conditions under two treatments (tailing substrate and 75% tailing/25% coconut fiber biochar substrate); every 25 days, 12 plants were selected per treatment. C. pumila registered the following bioaccumulation patterns: Pb > Zn > Cu > Cd in root and in leaf tissues. Furthermore, the results showed that individuals that grew on mine tailing substrate bioaccumulated many times more metals (Zn: 2.1, Cu: 1.8, Cd: 5.0, Pb: 3.0) and showed higher genetic damage levels (1.5 times higher) compared to individuals grown on mine tailing substrate with biochar. In contrast, individuals grown on mine tailing substrate with biochar documented higher chlorophyll a and b content (1.1 times more, for both), as well as higher biomass (1.5 times more). Therefore, adding coconut fiber biochar to mine tailing has a positive effect on the establishment and development of C. pumila individuals with the potential to phytoextract and phytostabilize HM from polluted soils. Our results suggest that the binomial hyperaccumulator plant in combination with this particular biochar is an excellent system to phytostabilize soils contaminated with HM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate aboveground vegetation biomass forecasting is essential for livestock management, climate impact assessments, and ecosystem health. While artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have advanced time series forecasting, a research gap in predicting aboveground biomass time series beyond single values persists. This study introduces RECMO and DirRecMO, two multi-output methods for forecasting aboveground vegetation biomass. Using convolutional neural networks, their efficacy is evaluated across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons on six Kenyan grassland biomass datasets, and compared with that of existing single-output methods (Recursive, Direct, and DirRec) and multi-output methods (MIMO and DIRMO). The results indicate that single-output methods are superior for short-term predictions, while both single-output and multi-output methods exhibit a comparable effectiveness in long-term forecasts. RECMO and DirRecMO outperform established multi-output methods, demonstrating a promising potential for biomass forecasting. This study underscores the significant impact of multi-output size on forecast accuracy, highlighting the need for optimal size adjustments and showcasing the proposed methods' flexibility in long-term forecasts. Short-term predictions show less significant differences among methods, complicating the identification of the best performer. However, clear distinctions emerge in medium- and long-term forecasts, underscoring the greater importance of method choice for long-term predictions. Moreover, as the forecast horizon extends, errors escalate across all methods, reflecting the challenges of predicting distant future periods. This study suggests advancing hybrid models (e.g., RECMO and DirRecMO) to improve extended horizon forecasting. Future research should enhance adaptability, investigate multi-output impacts, and conduct comparative studies across diverse domains, datasets, and AI algorithms for robust insights. With continued sea level rise and over-exploitation, saline water extends farther inland, causing changes in soil salinity and water quality and leading to permanent land salinization and ecosystem damage. Saltwater intrusion (SWI), causing numerous ecosystem problems and disasters, brings risk to urban ecosystems in coastal cities. Ecological risk, in the Greater Bay Area in China, should be assessed based on the effect of SWI status on ecosystem health. In this study, we built a new ecological risk-assessment model based on the geographic information system (GIS) technique and spatial data. At the conceptual level, four main stressors were identified based on literature reading and fieldwork. Four stress factors (SFs) were thoroughly investigated, namely, SF1: the intensity gradient immersed in saltwater; SF2: the mountain phreatic water supply; SF3: the salinity tolerance of urban greenbelt vegetation; and SF4: the supply capacity of irrigation water to suppress saline water. After a comprehensive evaluation using GIS and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), we mapped and assessed the ecological risk level of the urban greenbelt for the SWI. Our results showed that the area of urban green space affected by the SWI was approximately 49.31 km2, almost 12.05%. Ecological risk was sorted into five ranks: (1) very low risk 47.53%, (2) low risk 26.29%, (3) medium risk 22.92%, (4) high risk 2.45%, and (5) very high risk (0.8%). The ecological infrastructure of sponges should include freshwater conservation in coastal cities, and more attention should be paid to fresh groundwater discharge from coastal ecosystems in Shenzhen. This review meticulously examines the dynamics of river microbiomes, with an emphasis on the Ganges and Yamuna rivers of South Asia. These rivers are vital for both ecological and cultural landscapes and offer to understand the interaction between ecological and anthropogenic factors and their impact on microbial communities and activities. Ecological and hydrological factors such as seasonal changes, water flow and physico‐chemical properties of rivers influence microbial diversity and abundance. The effect of heavy metals from industrial and agricultural sources on the river microbiome and how these pollutants modify microbial community structures and ecosystem health are not understood well yet. This underscores the need for sustainable water treatment and remediations for practical engineering solutions. The study reveals how these interactions, whether symbiotic or competitive, affect the composition and functionality of riverine microbial communities. An innovative aspect of our research is the potential of river microbiomes as indicators of urban sewage contamination. We demonstrate how microbial patterns can signal pollution levels, proving valuable for environmental monitoring, management and mitigation. A special attention to the role of microbes in river ecosystems' biogeochemical cycles has been paid to how these microbes contribute to nutrient recycling, organic matter decomposition and overall ecosystem productivity, underlining their crucial role in maintaining the aesthetic value of the river. Additionally, study evaluates the latest methodologies for analysing microbiome metagenomic data, including functional annotation and microbial community analysis techniques. Seagrasses have long been a focal point for management efforts aimed at restoring ecosystem health in estuaries worldwide. In Tampa Bay, Florida (USA), seagrass coverage has declined since 2016 by nearly a third (11,518 acres), despite sustained reductions of nitrogen loads supportive of light environments for growth. Changing physical water quality conditions related to climate change may be stressing seagrasses beyond their optimal growth ranges, requiring an assessment to determine if this decline can be linked to climate stress. Three ambient water quality datasets of varying sampling designs and coverage were evaluated to characterize physicochemical environments in Tampa Bay and the potential relationships with seagrass change. Tampa Bay has become hotter and fresher with water temperature increasing by 0.03–0.04 °C per year and salinity decreasing by 0.04–0.06 ppt per year, translating to an increase of 1.3 to 1.7 °C and a decrease of 1.6 to 2.6 ppt over the last 50 years. Additionally, the number of days when temperature was above 30 °C or salinity was below 25 ppt has increased on average across all bay segments by 48 and 37 days, respectively, since 1975. These changes varied spatially and seasonally, with the most dramatic changes observed in the upper bay. Generalized Additive Models provided a weight-of-evidence that recent seagrass declines are somewhat associated with hotter and fresher conditions. Trends in warming and increased precipitation in the region are likely to continue, further creating suboptimal conditions for seagrasses in Tampa Bay. These results should compel resource managers to consider the likelihood that reduced resilience of estuarine resources due to shifting ecological baselines driven by additional climate change drivers will complicate long-standing management paradigms. While conventional management approaches that focus on limiting nutrient loads should be continued, their future effectiveness may be confounded by climate change drivers and warrant additional, complementary interventions and continuous monitoring data to support ecosystem health into the future. The aim of this study is to investigate the distribution of lanthanum, thorium, and uranium content in soils from the Mitrovica region in the Republic of Kosovo. For this purpose, 156 samples of topsoil (0–5 cm) were considered in a sampling network of 1.4 × 1.4 km2. The soil samples were prepared using the aqua regia digestion method and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The contents of La, Th, and U in the soil of the study area were determined to be 19, 4.8, and 0.84 mg/kg, respectively. The enrichment factor values for La, Th, and U ranged from 3.8 to 7.9, 3.2 to 7.0, and 2.0 to 7.0, respectively, indicating moderate to substantial enrichment. The geo‐accumulation index values of all elements were less than zero, indicating uncontaminated levels. The spatial distribution patterns of La, Th, and U content showed that the values are elevated in the north‐eastern and western parts of the study area, where Miocene latites and quartz latites predominate (average contents of 35, 2.4, and 2.1 mg/kg, respectively). These areas are located in rural areas, suggesting that the high La, Th, and U contents in the soil are related to the lithology of the study area and there is no influence of possible anthropogenic sources. This study contributes to the database of La, Th, and U contents in the soils of the Mitrovica region and allows an assessment of the relationship between geochemistry and ecosystem health. Striking the right nutrient balance is essential for sustainable farming and ecosystem health. In this regard, field experiments were conducted in three phases viz., fertility gradient experiment, main experiment and validation experiment through a soil test crop response approach to develop and validate fertilizer prescription equations for sweet corn in comparison with general recommended dose and soil fertility rating approach. The soil data, fresh cob yield, and NPK uptake were used for establishing four important basic parameters, viz., nutrient requirement (kg t-1), contribution of nutrients from fertilizers, soil, and organic manure. The results revealed that nutrients required to produce one tonne of fresh cob yield (NR) were 5.85 kg, 0.87 kg and 4.31kg for N, P and K, respectively under the STCR NPK alone approach and 6.07 kg, 0.92 kg and 4.33 kg for N, P and K, respectively under STCR NPK+FYM approach. In the validation experiment, STCR NPK+FYM approach for the targeted yield of 25 t ha−1 recorded higher fresh cob yield (23.38 t ha−1) and dry stover yield (35.07 t ha−1) which were significantly higher compared to general recommended dose and soil fertility rating approach. The developed STCR equations for the aforesaid crop are valid as the percent deviation of cob yield from the targeted yield was within ±10%. Similarly, highest nutrient use efficiency was achieved with the STCR approach, specifically when targeting a lower yield through an NPK+FYM mode. Thus, implementation of the STCR approach of fertilizer prescription, with or without FYM, at targeted yields of 25 and 22 t ha−1, not only surpassed the effects of the other fertilizer recommendation approach in terms of cob yields, but also increased NPK uptake, improved nutrient use efficiency and greater economic returns. Assessing ecosystem health on a large scale is crucial for a wide range of management and regulatory decisions. Technologies such as hyperspectral imaging allow noninvasive and rapid estimation of key attributes based on observed reflectance. However, these images are high-dimensional and real-world applications require models based on fewer wavelengths. This paper proposes a new wavelength selection and feature extraction method for hyperspectral image analysis based on genetic programming to automatically select key wavelength regions and informative image features. A dataset of hyperspectral images of sediment in the field was collected and paired with ground-truth measurements of the sediment porosity and organic matter content. Two new program structures were proposed to construct feature extraction trees from either the mean reflectance spectra (spectra-based) or full hyperspectral images (image-based). SVR models were constructed to predict attributes based on the extracted features. Various regression models were used to predict the porosity and organic matter content. Full-wavelength models were constructed to reliably predict the organic matter content. The proposed spectra-based genetic programming solutions show competitive results compared to common wavelength selection methods, such as SPA, CARS, and RC. Despite (or perhaps because of) the staggering scale and pace of global change, the concept of the Anthropocene eludes discrete classification. There is widespread consensus that conditions associated with the Anthropocene, including rapid biodiversity loss and climate change, must be addressed if we are to enjoy ongoing and rich experiences. At the crux of human impacts is urban living as of 2024 nearly 60% of people live in cities. Human societies are tightly interconnected with each other and surrounding ecosystems, but for citydwellers, these connections may seem abstract. A failure to appreciate and foster such connections can have human and environmental health repercussions. We present a concept for a meal featuring local wild foods that could only be appropriately served under regionally ameliorated Anthropocene conditions. By presenting this hypothetical "solution", we seek a common ground that spans human (and non-human) cultures and behaviors, and a concept that can be extended to any community. The simplicity of the "Anthropocene meal" belies three primary challenges: improvements to urban design, maintenance of ecosystem health, and shifting cultural attitudes. However, these barriers are quantifiable and may be addressed within annual to decadal timelines, making the Anthropocene meal a broadly achievable goal, and thus a valid source of optimism in a time of great uncertainty. Mangrove forests are fundamental coastal ecosystems for the variety of services they provide, including green-house gas regulation, coastal protection and home to a great biodiversity. Mexico is the fourth country with the largest extension of mangroves of which 60% occurs in the Yucatan Peninsula. Understanding the microbial component of mangrove forests is necessary for their critical roles in biogeochemical cycles, ecosystem health, function and restoration initiatives. Here we study the relation between the microbial community from sediments and the restoration process of mangrove forests, comparing conserved, degraded and restored mangroves along the northern coast of the Yucatan peninsula. Results showed that although each sampling site had a differentiated microbial composition, the taxa belonged predominantly to Proteobacteria (13.2–23.6%), Desulfobacterota (7.6–8.3%) and Chloroflexi (9–15.7%) phyla, and these were similar between rainy and dry seasons. Conserved mangroves showed significantly higher diversity than degraded ones, and restored mangroves recovered their microbial diversity from the degraded state (Dunn test p-value Benjamini-Hochberg adjusted = 0.0034 and 0.0071 respectively). The structure of sediment microbial β-diversity responded significantly to the mangrove conservation status and physicochemical parameters (organic carbon content, redox potential, and salinity). Taxa within Chloroflexota, Desulfobacterota and Thermoplasmatota showed significantly higher abundance in degraded mangrove samples compared to conserved ones. Green sea dykes, also known as ecosystem-based sea dykes, represent a novel type of coastal defense consisting of both traditional structural engineering and coastal ecosystems, designed to cope with the future trends of sea level rise and intensified storms. Here we focus on the mid-latitude mud coasts (eastern China in particular), which face the most prominent risks of storm surge, storm-induced giant waves, and shoreline erosion, and summarizes the scientific basis of green sea dykes and the current status of engineering practices. We show that the basic mechanisms of nearshore wave energy dissipation include bottom friction, sediment transport, and form drag. These explain the wave damping capacity of oyster reefs and salt marshes on mud coasts. In tidal flat environments, oyster growth increases frictional resistance and even causes wave breaking; the resuspension and transport of fine-grained sediments on salt marsh beds and the movement or resistance to hydrodynamic forcing of salt marsh vegetation stems effectively dissipate wave kinetic energy, and their efficiency increases with the elevation of the bed surface. Based on the wave damping capacity of oyster reefs and salt marshes on mud coasts, ecosystem-based sea dykes are being built in combination with traditional structured sea dykes. By utilizing natural tidal flats outside the dykes or implementing artificial modification projects, a certain scale of salt marshes and/or oyster reefs can be maintained, which serve to protect the sea dykes and enhance their wave resistance functions. From the perspective of system optimization, it is necessary to further improve the efficiency and sustainability of green sea dykes under constraints such as regional environment characteristics, ecosystem health, investment capacity, and ecological resilience. Related scientific issues include the theorization of the wave damping process of salt marshes, the niche and scale control of oyster reef and salt marsh ecosystems, the establishment of engineering standards and the design of the optimal form of sea dykes. Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTCadmium (Cd) contamination poses a significant threat to plants and human, as it can easily accumulate in plant tissues, leading to biochemical and physiological disorders. There is a growing interest in using biochar to mitigate the absorption of heavy metals by rice plants. This study tested peach biochar (PB) and its various levels of applications to evaluate the promising level for Cd remediation in contaminated soil. The application of PB3 had a significant impact on Cd mitigation, with extractable Cd (AB-DTPA) in soil decreasing from 66 mg kg−1 to 18 mg kg−1. Cd content in shoots decreased from 2.5 mg kg−1 to 0.9 mg kg−1, and in grains decreased from 1.1 mg kg−1 to 0.5 mg kg−1. Moreover, the PB treatment led to increased rice yield, from 4.9 to 10 g pot−1, and biological yield, from 4 to 20 g pot−1. The soil also showed improved organic matter content, increasing from 0.4% to 0.7%, and enhanced levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), by increases from 2.1 g pot−1 to 5 g pot−1, 58 mg kg−1 to 83 mg kg−1, and 40 mg kg−1 to 63 mg kg−1, respectively. Zooplankton are critical indicators of pressures impacting freshwater ecosystems. We analyzed the response of zooplankton communities across different sub-catchment types—headwaters, natural, urban, urban-agricultural, and agricultural—within the Łyna river–lake system in Northern Poland. Using taxonomic groups and functional traits (body size, feeding strategies), we applied Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS-R) to elucidate the relationships between environmental conditions, land use, and zooplankton metacommunity structure. Two-Way Cluster Analysis (TWCA) identified local subsets with characteristic patterns, while Indicator Species Analysis (ISA) determined area-specific taxa. The natural river zone exhibited significant habitat heterogeneity and feeding niches, whereas urban areas created functional homogenization of zooplankton, dominated by small, broad-diet microphages. Agricultural areas promoted diversity among large filter feeders (Crustacea), active suctors (Rotifera), and amoebae (Protozoa). However, intensified agricultural activities, substantially diminished the zooplankton population, biomass, taxonomic richness, and overall ecosystem functionality. The impact of land cover change is more pronounced at small-scale sub-catchments than at the catchment level as a whole. Therefore, assessing these impacts requires detailed spatial and temporal analysis at the sub-catchment level to identify the most affected areas. Background: Hematologic and blood biochemical values are key tools for assessing primate health. A long‐term behavioral study of howler monkeys at a single site (La Pacífica, Guanacaste, Costa Rica), afforded the opportunity to develop baseline values for a large group of animals, evaluating differences between adult males and females and comparing to a report in the same population two decades later. Methods: In 1998, 64 free‐ranging mantled howler monkeys were anesthetized and sampled for hematologic and biochemical analysis. Results: Blood analysis is reported for 29 adult females, 9 juvenile females, 19 adult males and 3 juvenile males. Four adults were excluded due to external injury or disease. There were few significant differences between adult females, juvenile females, and adult males. Conclusions: Baseline blood parameters are useful for determining normal values for howler monkey populations. The values for total protein, blood urea nitrogen, glucose, liver enzymes and potassium differed from a later study in 2019 may indicate changes that are influencing howler monkey health. The Delta do Parnaíba Environmental Protection Area (EPA) represents one of the largest deltaic systems in the Americas. This study investigated the spatiotemporal variability of phytoplankton communities and their correlation with environmental factors and assessed their trophic status and water quality across three mesotidal estuaries (Parnaíba-PRE, Comum-CRE, and Bom Gosto-BGRE) over a year-long sampling period. Multivariate analyses explored the interplay between environmental parameters, phytoplankton communities, and trophic indices. Salinity has emerged as a key determinant in these estuaries. Trophic components influence nutrient dynamics, with Redfield ratios indicating colimitation by orthophosphate (${\rm PO}_4^{3-}$ PO 4 3 − ) and silicate (${\rm SiO}_2^-$ SiO 2 − ). This study identified 355 taxa within the phytoplankton community, with Chlorophyta predominating in the PRE and diatoms dominating in estuaries with relatively high salinities (BGRE and CRE). Environmental drivers vary across estuaries, with temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), total nitrogen (TN), chlorophyll-a (Chll-a), and the trophic index (TRIX) influencing the phytoplankton community in the PRE, while salinity, ${\rm PO}_4^{3-}$ PO 4 3 − , total phosphorus (TP), and TN affect the CRE, and salinity and Chll-a influence the BGRE. The Delta do Parnaíba EPA exhibits eutrophic to hypertrophic conditions, emphasising the need for comprehensive environmental monitoring, nutrient management, and conservation efforts to safeguard biodiversity, water quality, and ecosystem health. Microorganisms harbor catabolic plasmids to tackle refractory organic pollutants, which is crucial for bioremediation and ecosystem health. Understanding the impacts of plasmids on hosts provides insights into the behavior and adaptation of degrading bacteria in the environment. Here, we examined alterations in the physiological properties and gene expression profiles of Rhodococcus sp. strain p52 after losing two conjugative dioxin-catabolic megaplasmids (pDF01 and pDF02). The growth of strain p52 accelerated after pDF01 loss, while it decelerated after pDF02 loss. During dibenzofuran degradation, the expression levels of dibenzofuran catabolic genes on pDF01 were higher compared to those on pDF02; accordingly, pDF01 loss markedly slowed dibenzofuran degradation. It was suggested that pDF01 is more beneficial to strain p52 under dibenzofuran exposure. Moreover, plasmid loss decreased biofilm formation, especially after pDF02 loss. Transcriptome profiling revealed different pathways enriched in upregulated and downregulated genes after pDF01 and pDF02 loss, indicating different adaptation mechanisms. Based on the transcriptional activity variation, pDF01 played roles in transcription and anabolic processes, while pDF02 profoundly influenced energy production and cellular defense. This study enhances our knowledge of the impacts of degradative plasmids on native hosts and the adaptation mechanisms of hosts, contributing to the application of plasmid-mediated bioremediation in contaminated environments. Research highlights: The increasing rates of mental health disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic have popularized the notion of access to natural environments as a solution, leading to a surge in demand for urban green spaces. The concentration of natural volatile organic compounds (NVOCs) in forests, resulting from plant metabolism, plays a crucial role in forest-based healing and ecosystem health. Background and objectives: This study aimed to investigate how tree spacing influences NVOC concentrations within forest ecosystems using passive samplers, thereby enhancing the understanding of optimal forest management practices to promote human health benefits. Methods: We employed passive samplers to investigate tree spacing effects on NVOC concentrations. We placed passive samplers among trees in the study area to measure NVOC concentrations in individual trees and analyzed the relationship between NVOC concentration and tree spacing and structure. Results: A multiple regression analysis using distance decay models showed that a tree spacing of 2.7–3 m had a significant impact on NVOC concentrations. These findings provide a better understanding of how tree structure, tree spacing, and microclimate within the forest influence NVOC concentration. Conclusion: These findings have important implications for forest management and the design of forest landscapes to promote human health and well-being by considering the spatial distribution of NVOC concentrations. In the context of high-quality development, scientifically and objectively assessing regional ecosystem health (EH) is important for ecological civilization. However, the commonly used EH assessment framework typically neglects intrinsic connections, mutual adaptability, and coordination among interrelated indicators. The coupling coordination model was utilized to improve the classic pressure–state–response assessment (PSR) model. The carbon footprint, water footprint, landscape pattern, and response status of the Manas River Basin were used to construct a medium-scale regional EH assessment framework linking natural ecosystems with human socioeconomic elements. A quantitative assessment was conducted on the EH conditions of the Manas River Basin from 2000 to 2020. Over the past 21 years, the EH conditions of the Manas River Basin have fluctuated upward. The ecosystem health index (EHI) increased from 0.18 to 0.37. Compared with the conventional PSR model, the coupling coordination pressure–state–response model (CC–PSR) better reflected the fluctuations in EH conditions caused by "pressure", "state", and "response" level changes. In the early stage (2000–2006), increasing human activity strongly pressured the regional ecosystem, limiting EH improvements. The increase in "pressure" was reflected in the increasing trends of the water footprint, carbon footprint, and ecological footprint. During the middle to late period (2009–2020), as the "response" level improved, the regional EH condition continued to increase, and the EHI stabilized between 0.29 and 0.38. Ecosystem resilience improvements and human afforestation projects enhanced the "response" level, but their impacts were noticeably delayed. Over the past 21 years, regional landscape diversity, landscape connectance, and landscape contagion have remained high. The well-maintained landscape pattern has laid the foundation for consolidating and improving the regional EH. The EHI is increasing; its fluctuations stem from periodic fluctuations in the regional water yield and carbon sequestration capacity, which are constrained by the basin climate and vegetation coverage. The North China Plain (NCP) serves as the main grain production land in China, functioning as a critical region for ensuring China's food security. To address the multifaceted challenges confronting food security in the NCP, the study embarked on a comprehensive analysis of the synergistic interactions between agricultural water usage, carbon emissions, and ecosystem health. By proposing footprint family indicators and using the bottom-up IPCC coefficient approach, this study quantitatively evaluates the spatial–temporal changes of water–carbon–ecological footprints in NCP from 2003 to 2020. Furthermore, a coupling coordination degree model that focuses on the coordination of water–carbon–ecological footprints is established. The findings are as follows: (1) The total water footprint in the NCP showed a striking increasing trend with an increase of 1.52 × 1011 m3, and the carbon footprint increased by 1.27 × 109 t, with significant ecological impacts. (2) The NCP's ecological footprint exhibited an "M"-shaped trend. The land structure maintained stable with negligible changes in the proportion of ecological footprints. (3) The coupling degree between the footprints of water, carbon, and ecology in the NCP is high, revealing a noteworthy interaction effect. This research can provide data support for effective resources allocation and sustainable social–economic development, offering reasonable insights for China to formulate more scientific policies of green transition in land use and ecological civilization construction.
