Drug-release systems have attracted attention over the last few years since they can be used as a substitute for traditional methods of drug delivery. These have the advantage of being directly administered at the treatment site and can maintain the drug at adequate levels for a longer period, thus increasing their efficacy. Starch-based films are interesting candidates for use as matrices for drug release, especially due to starch's non-toxic properties and its biocompatibility. Endophytic fungi are an important source of bioactive molecules, including secondary metabolites such as phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity. In the present study, cassava starch-based films were developed to act as release systems of phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity. The Amazonian endophytic fungus Aspergillus niger MgF2 was cultivated in liquid media, and the fungal extract was obtained by liquid-liquid partition with ethyl acetate. The starch-based films incorporated with the fungal extract were characterized in regards to their physicochemical properties. The release kinetics of the extract from the film and its antioxidant and cytotoxic properties were also evaluated. The films incorporated with the extract presented maximum release after 25 min at 37 °C and pH 6.8. In addition, it was observed that the antioxidant compounds of the fungal extract maintain their activity after being released from the film, and were non-toxic. Plants are one of the most vulnerable groups to fragmentation and habitat loss, that may affect community richness, abundance, functional traits, and genetic diversity. Here, we address the effects of landscape features on adaptive quantitative traits and evolutionary potential, and on neutral genetic diversity in populations of the Neotropical savanna tree Caryocar brasiliense . We sampled adults and juveniles in 10 savanna remnants within five landscapes. To obtain neutral genetic variation, we genotyped all individuals from each site using nine microsatellite loci. For adaptive traits we measured seed size and mass and grown seeds in nursery in completely randomized experimental design. We obtained mean, additive genetic variance ( V a ) and coefficient of variation ( CV a %), which measures evolvability, for 17 traits in seedlings. We found that landscapes with higher compositional heterogeneity (SHDI) had lower evolutionary potential ( CV a %) in leaf length (LL) and lower aboveground dry mass (ADM) genetic differentiation ( Q ST ). We also found that landscapes with higher SHDI had higher genetic diversity ( He ) and allelic richness ( AR ) in adults, and lower genetic differentiation ( F ST ). In juveniles, SHDI was also positively related to AR . These results are most likely due to longer dispersal distance of pollen in landscapes with lower density of flowering individuals. Agricultural landscapes with low quality mosaic may be more stressful for plant species, due to the lower habitat cover (%), higher cover of monocropping (%) and other land covers, and edge effects. However, in landscapes with higher SHDI with high quality mosaic, forest nearby savanna habitat and the other environments may facilitate the movement or provide additional habitat and resources for seed disperses and pollinators, increasing gene flow and genetic diversity. Bacterial cellulose (BC) and silk fibroin (SF) are natural biopolymers successfully applied in tissue engineering and biomedical fields. In this work nanocomposites based on BC and SF were prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, the investigation of cytocompatibility was done by MTT, XTT and Trypan Blue dye technique. Cellular adhesion and proliferation were detected additionally. The evaluation of genotoxicity was realized by micronucleus assay. In vitro tests showed that the material is non-cytotoxic or genotoxic. SEM images revealed a greater number of cells attached at the BC/SF:50% scaffold surface than the pure BC one, suggesting that the presence of fibroin improved cell attachment. This could be related to the SF amino acid sequence that acts as cell receptors facilitating cell adhesion and growth. Consequently, BC/SF:50% scaffolds configured an excellent option in bioengineering depicting its potential for tissue regeneration and cultivation of cells on nanocomposites., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
