This study examines the factors contributing to the low utilization of quantitative research approaches among social work research students. A census sampling technique was employed to conduct a survey of 1268 students who had completed their final year research dissertations. The descriptive statistics revealed that 81% (n = 1022) of social work students employed qualitative research, 16% (n = 208) used mixed methods, and only 3% (n = 38) utilized quantitative approaches. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed factors that were statistically significant (ρ<.05) in predicting low utilization of quantitative approaches that include; the supervisor’s preference, the student’s secondary education, training in research methods, competency in statistics, methodological flexibility and suitability, resources constraints, professional assistance, and fear of failure. These findings prompt recommendations for social work training institutions to enhance their research capacity, adopt co-supervisions, advocate for quantitative research, and prioritize continuous research mentorship in statistical tools. The current study aims to measure the extent to which researchers rely on periodicals as a source of information in their various types and forms, traditional and electronic, open access periodicals and commercial periodicals, etc., in preparing university theses versus other sources of information. The study seeks to explore the characteristics of reference citations in scientific theses for library and information science in general, and then explore the objective, qualitative and linguistic characteristics, etc., of scientific periodicals that were relied upon in scientific theses. The study aims to apply bibliometric laws to Arab and foreign scientific periodicals specialized in the field of libraries and information that were cited in university theses, which would determine the focal periodicals in the field of libraries and information, which are the most influential periodicals compared to other periodicals, and therefore are the most relied upon by researchers in their scientific theses. The study also seeks, using practical tools and statistical methods, to identify the influential authors and publishers in the field of libraries and information.

This essay argues for a connection between studying the history of geography as an academic discipline and the research experiences and knowledge productions of undergraduate geography students. The whereabouts of undergraduate dissertation research and the conceptions of what the field actually constitutes shapes geography students' perceptions of the discipline, and thus affects shifts in what future and novice practitioners see as geography, or geographical knowledge. When comparing the local educational versions of academic geography taught at one university to more traditional, perhaps canonical, narratives on the history of geography, it becomes obvious that although there are many similarities, the timelines between disciplinary trends and educational practices never fully match. • The social and educational contexts of geography departments are indispensable sources for the history of geography. • The whereabouts of undergraduate research and the conceptions of what the field actually constitutes shapes geography students' perceptions of the discipline. • These spatialities of dissertation research affect shifts in what novice practitioners see as geographical knowledge. Purpose: Designing metadata ontology model for semantic representation of Theses by using the SPAR (Semantic Publishing and Referencing) Ontologies. Method: This study was an applied form and two methods were used, Content Analysis and mapping. The metadata of 69 theses and dissertations on the National Library and Archive of Iran in three Databases: 1) Digital Library of National Library and Archive of Iran. 2) Rasa Software and 3) Ganj in the Iranian Research Institute for Information Science and Technology were selected modified and completed by mapping. On the other hand, by analyzing the entities of each SPAR ontology and suggesting another entity to the researcher, the checklist was formed. This checklist included classes, properties, and individuals. At last, by entering them into Protégé software version 5.5, the model of metadata ontology, MdOntTDs, was drawn. Findings: Findings identified deficiencies in the existence of four important metadata elements (subject, supervisor, advisor, and abstract) in RASA and NLAI Digital Library. Among the 18 SPAR Ontologies, the most entities were selected from FaBiO, FRAPO, and CiTO respectively. All entities of BiDO, BiRO, C4O, Fivestar, FR, FRBR, PO, PRO, PSO, and PWO were suitable for theses. 195 individuals from 6 SPAR Ontologies, 292 individuals labeled with MdTDs from theses, and 100 individuals labeled with SUNMdTDs were selected by the researcher and entered into the software. 1558 entities categorized by class, Properties (object, data, and Annotation), and individuals along with the description and definition of each entity were placed in the software, in the form of hierarchical and determining axioms for classes. And specifying domain and range for relationships. Finally, the RDF graph was drawn using the OntoGraf plugin, and the final Model, MdOntTDs was developed. this research has proposed three new types of metadata: 1) Except for the existing keywords, topics have been categorized and modeled up to three levels including 4 main categories, 16 subcategories, and many units. Each of these final topics has been related to "hasSubject" and "isSubjectOf" properties. 2) The research methods of Theses that were connected with "hasMethod" and "used in" properties. 3) The papers taken from Theses were also searched, as far as possible, and were connected with "hasJournalArticle" and "journalArticleOf" properties. Conclusion: This model, if implemented, can overcome keyword search limitations, the problem of linking and Data sharing on the web, and the inconsistency of data. In the software, classes and their related individuals are visible in the form of a hierarchical network in RDF triples, and the connection between entities with increasing access points promises deeper semantic searches. Undergraduate Biomedical Science dissertations are the culmination of a student's academic journey and allow students to refine technical proficiencies, experimental design and data analysis. However, traditional dissertation projects may not fully meet the requirements of diverse student populations and employer's needs. This research project aims to assess the effectiveness of modifying the assessment format for final-year projects, incorporating elements such as lay summaries, project proposals, scientific research papers, and oral poster defences. The objective was to cultivate higher-order critical thinking skills and enhance written and verbal communication competencies, in addition to developing a suite of transferable skills which are highly sought by employers. Quantitative data were primarily generated via end-of-module feedback reports and the module satisfaction survey. Students rated their confidence in a suite of transferable skills pre and post-completion of the project module using a fourpoint Likert scale. Staff perceptions (n = 30) and module board reports were also evaluated. For all data, a paired t-test for related groups was conducted. Thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data using the Braun and Clark Framework. The end-of-module feedback was overwhelmingly positive with all students agreeing that they were satisfied with the module. Students reported a statistically significant increase in confidence within 11 transferable skills which are considered core within the industry, for example, critical thinking, problemsolving and time management. Furthermore, the mean module mark increased following the module redesign from 66.3% ± 0.2% in 2019 to 70.9% ± 0.6% in 2020 (p ≤ 0.05). Staff provided free text comments, reporting an overall improvement in the module, a reduction in workload and a better teaching experience. Students exhibited appreciation of the new module structure, assessment suit and creative liberty within the projects. The redesigned project module enhanced the teaching experience for staff, whilst students appreciated the diverse range of projects and assessments that featured shorter word limits and a creative flair. Writing discussion in dissertation, though has textual generics, yet is influenced by the context, research domain, and writers’ linguistic competence. In Pakistan, graduates, despite being non-native English writers, know about the generics of writing discussion; yet, their mother tongue and cultural context influence their writing. In order to compare and contrast the generics of writing discussion, and identify the commonalities and variation; this research aims to explore the academic move-structures in the discussion sections. By adopting Corpus-based research tools corpora of M.Phil.and Ph.D.dissertations from the field of English Linguistics and Education were compiled. Based on Yang and Allison (2003) modelthe data was analyzed through Antmover(text structure analyzer software). Different types of moves in discussion section, such as obligatory, conventional, and optional moves, were analyzed in accordance with the strategies of Kanoksilapatham (2005). The commonalities and contrast in the moves of writing discussion has enabled the researcher in identifying 5-moves generic pattern that can serve as a guideline for novice researchers in writing discussion of the dissertations in the fields of English Linguistics and Education in Pakistan. Furthermore, paying attention to the ways in which these disciplines use specific structural moves would facilitate researchers to become more aware of the need for employing these structural moves in properly discussing the data and results in research.

Yarn and spinning technology is a complex process that is a combination of raw materials, machinery, and automation technology where continuous improvements, researches and innovations run progressively. For the evolution of spinning technology, academic publications, postgraduate theses, and technological contributions of related shareholders must be considered as adherent supplements. Aim of this study is to examine the accomplished 236 postgraduate theses related to conventional and novel textile fibre types, staple spun/filament yarn technology and machinery, yarn types with structural and functional varieties, and modified spinning technologies in Turkish Universities. Moreover, it is aimed to reveal any trend in theses on yarn technology and the regional textile clusters in Türkiye. The methodology of the pursuit is a quantitative assessment where postgraduate level, thesis subject, year of thesis defence, and raw materials used in the theses are concerned. The findings showed that researchers focussed on conventional spinning systems and yarns in parallel with the spinning capacity and import potential of the country. Other extractions of the study are; classical ring system is mostly studied by the researchers, modern spinning technologies are included in many theses, reflections of global circumstances are distinguished in theses with keywords of manmade/recycled fibres, and blended yarns.

This study aims to investigate the graduate theses between the years of 2010 and 2022 about refugee children in Türkiye. In this regard, 157 theses that are accessible at the Council of Higher Education's Databases of the National Thesis Center were examined. The method of this research was case study, and content analyses were used. The theses included in the study have been analyzed concerning the years they were published, the kind of thesis, the research techniques, the purpose of the research, the sample size, the age, gender, and ethnicity of the sample, as well as the cities where the data was gathered. The findings of the research are presented in the tables in the form of percentages and frequencies. According to the results, it was seen that most postgraduate-level theses about refugee children were made in 2019. As a method, it was determined that the most qualitative research method was used. The aims of the research were examined in five categories: education, social cohesion, psychology, health, and others. When the ethnic identities of the study groups in these theses were examined, it was seen that most Syrians were present. Objective: Bibliometric analysis is a valuable method for assessing the scientific landscape of a given field. In this study, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of dissertation research in Azerbaijan was given to highlight the chronological trends of academic scientific achievements in the country, aiming to provide a broad overview of the research output and trends in the country's academic community. Methods: Based on various academic databases (HAC) and the collections of the National Library of Azerbaijan, the main repository of the country, a significant collection of existing dissertations has been assembled. With the help of bibliometric methods, the growth dynamics of these dissertations by decades and distribution by scientific fields were studied. Results: The results obtained reflect the interest in academic research in the country and indicate a noticeable increase in the productivity of dissertation research in Azerbaijan over the years. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis is a chronological overview of dissertation research in Azerbaijan, offering valuable information to both the public and scholars and researchers. As Azerbaijan continues to evolve as a knowledge-based society, this study can serve as a valuable resource for advancing academic excellence and developing research in the country. In 2023, Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University – the first higher technical educational institution in Russia – turns 250 years. Any significant anniversary is an occasion to look back, analyze and evaluate the way traveled. The article analyzes the main achievements of the Mining University on the basis of statistical material from the moment of the foundation of the Mining School to the present day: educational and pedagogical experience in the education and training of mining specialists, scientific and technical intelligentsia; the outstanding contribution of its scientists, graduates to the establishment and development of the mineral resource complex of Russia, in strengthening the country's defense power, the creation of scientific schools. The first part of the article provides data on the number of graduates for different periods of the history of the university, shows the dynamics of their number growth, the peculiarities of learning. According to the authors, over 250 years, about 99 thousand engineers and mining specialists have been prepared in the university. The second part of the article is devoted to the characteristics of the teaching staff, in which a special place is occupied by his favorites, who have become outstanding scientists, academicians and corresponding members of the Academies of Sciences. Those of them who have devoted more than a dozen years of their lives to teaching within the walls of the university are noted. The final part shows the main scientific achievements of the university: the organization of scientific societies, the development of scientific schools, research institutes, etc. About 200 graduates of the Mining University have been awarded State Prizes for their contribution to the development of science and technology. The work of dissertation councils was noted, in which more than 5 thousand dissertations have been defended since 1943.

A bibliometric analysis was conducted over the bibliographies of chemistry and physics doctoral dissertations between 1970 and 2020 to ascertain what types of documents are cited, average ages of cited references and overall changes of dissertation references that have occurred with the advent of electronic resources. The study reviewed 50 dissertations for each discipline with 10 dissertations from each decade (n = 100). Results measured 12,065 total references and found that the median age of journals increased in both chemistry and physics, doubling from 2010 to 2020. Only a few dissertation studies have been done on a longitudinal base to evaluate changes in publication trends. Similarities between the two disciplines with increases in the percentages of journal articles and declines in the number of books, other dissertations, and material types are calculated. The Council on Higher Education (CHE)'s report on the doctoral programme review states that offering postgraduate programmes seems to be a challenge to some South African universities. Amongst others, the report expresses that postgraduate supervision at universities suffers from many challenges, some of which result in students being delayed or not completing their studies. Underpinned by Archer's (1998) theory of the interplay between structure, culture, and agency (support programmes), the study seeks to examine factors that hinder postgraduate students' completion of their dissertations and theses. The study adopted narrative research where the qualitative design was used. Postgraduate students (Master and Doctoral) who have registered for these programmes repeatedly in the university served as participants in the study. The purposive sample was used to sample eight postgraduate students who have frequently registered for more than the required residency period. Semi-structured questions were formulated to guide data collection. Data was collected through a focus group of eight Master and Doctoral students. Collected data were analysed using the content analysis method. Summary: There has been substantial discussion aimed at investigating the extent to which academic researchers can or should "use" large language models, such as ChatGPT and Bard, in their research papers. However, there seems to have been limited attention given to the extent to which students can use these tools for the development of theses, proposals and dissertations. This paper pushes the arguments from focusing on academic researchers, journal papers, and technical meetings to considering those theses and dissertations, raising several questions and concerns. Ultimately, university policies need to address these issues, but if publisher and editor responses and alternative business uses are a signal of that direction, consensus may be difficult to achieve. The purpose of this paper is to identify the ethical challenges of dissertations/theses supervision in Iran and to provide the codes of ethics for supervisors according to the challenges. The process of achieving this goal has consisted of four steps: determining ethical principles for supervision as a profession, identifying ethical challenges, examining the relationship between the challenges and the Iranian academic context, and codifying the ethical duties of supervisors. Accordingly, in the first step, a set of ethical principles that can be an ethical basis for research supervision as profession is justified. In the second step, research supervision challenges are extracted from the literature-researches as well as the regulations of various universities and institutes. In the third step, surveying a number of faculty members and graduated/graduate students we asked them how many of the challenges occur in the Iranian academic context, and also what other challenges can be added to our list of the challenges. The results of this step indicated the high relevance of the challenges to Iranian academic context. Due to the fact that both groups of supervisors and students participated in this research, it was possible to compare their ethical perspectives as well. In some cases, students and faculty members had divergent views on the importance and occurrence of some of the challenges. Finally, in the fourth step, based on the obtained challenges and in accordance to their instances, 36 independent codes were provided, and their relevance and comprehensiveness was evaluated in a focus group.

An overview of domestic publications on conflictology in the field of linguistics is provided in the article. A quantitative analysis of linguistic works on the problem of conflict from 1990 to 2022 is carried out. The linguistic features of the study of conflict in dissertations, monographs, articles and textbooks are evaluated. Leading research methods: bibliometric analysis, publication method, classification method. The relevance of the study is related to the objective need to understand conflicts in different areas of scientific knowledge, as well as the need to study the contribution of the philological sciences to the development of modern conflictology. Monitoring of linguistic works on conflict shows that linguistics is beginning to take a strong place in the theory of conflictology. The analysis of bibliographic information allows us to characterize the main directions of the problem of conflict study in linguistics: contradictions in language and speech, conflict of language norms, conceptual essence of the conflict phenomenon, verbalization of the concept CONFLICT, objectification of reality conflicts in texts, language markers of conflict potential, destructive practices of conflict, ways of communication optimization, legal dimension of linguistic conflict, linguistic ways of conflict prevention. The author’s diversification of linguistic works by types of conflict is presented in the article.

Documentary research in education can often be overlooked as an approach to exploring policy and practice issues, particularly for dissertation research projects. However, a range of documents can offer valuable data. In particular, school inspection documentation can be an illuminating and accessible source. Building on my recent research and teaching experiences, this paper provides a guide to utilising school inspection documentation from the Scottish context as primary sources for research dissertations in education and other disciplines. The intention is to support students and researchers undertaking research projects to navigate these sources confidently and to enable them to develop insightful analyses and discussions. The aim of this study is to reveal the dissertations written in the Music Education Teaching Departments of the Institute of Educational Sciences, Fine Arts Education between 2014-2021 in Turkey. The study was planned as a qualitative method research and a case study was adopted. The data of the study were collected from the YOK National Thesis Center and a total of 132 dissertations were reached. The aforementioned data were analyzed by content analysis and interpreted by considering the themes of 'year, university, subjects, method, design and sample group'. The findings of the study showed that the majority of these theses were written in 2019; at Gazi University; on instrument education (violin education), adopted quantitative method and experimental design, and studied with pre-service music teachers. Doctoral education is a key feature of university systems, as well as a basic foundation of scientific practice. That period culminates in a dissertation and examination of the candidate that has been studied from several points of view. This paper reports the results of an analysis on the evolution and characteristics of gender imbalance of a complete doctoral system for a wide period of time. Data from the database Teseo was used in order to identify the individuals involved in the process, the scientific fields in which the dissertations where classified, and the institutions in which the examination took place. Results: the Spanish system shows a clear evolution towards gender balance, but also some concerning trends that are worth tracking. Seemingly, STEM disciplines look to be evolving more slowly than other branches of science in several aspects. A leaky pipeline is characterized in this system around the roles of supervisors, candidates, members and chairs of the dissertation committees. We conducted a content analysis of generic qualitative counseling dissertations (GQR; N = 70), examining their methodological justifications, coherence, and trustworthiness. Dissertations authors often presented vague methodological justifications. Findings have implications for constructing methodological justifications, integrating relevant literature, and awareness of how GQR compares to other qualitative methodologies. This study is a citation analysis of serials in postgraduate Theses and dissertations of library and information science of public universities in Southeast Nigeria submitted from 2013 to 2021. The study was guide by five research questions in line with the objectives of the study. The study employed a descriptive survey design with a sampled population of 296 derived through census method from four public universities offering library and information science. The principle instruments used in collecting data for this study were self-designed checklists. With the checklists, 12455 serials citations were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mode, mean and range and data presented in tables, charts and graphs using frequencies and percentile. The study found that the most cited serials types were journals with 76.5% citations followed by conference proceedings/reports with 20% and the least cited being government publication with only .5 citations. This affirms other citation analysis, which found that journals are the most frequently used type. It was further discovered that serials used were either in print or electronic form. The study also revealed that multi authorship is the most frequently cited author pattern in library graduates theses and dissertations, while annual serials citations range from 1034 to 2205. The study indicated that the average age of serials used was 0 - 20. The study recommended among other things that there should be documentation librarian in each university library whose duty should be tracking down research reports, ensuring proper documentations and upward delivery to the university library circulation unit. Our study compares journal citations from dissertations granted at three universities (Penn State, Cornell, and Auburn) using a novel bibliometric approach: text mining. We first tested the validity of text mining as a method for collecting journal title mentions by comparing text mining results with human-tallied results on a set of dissertations. We then text mined a group of dissertations using a preexisting list of journal titles in order to count journal title mentions in combination with the number of dissertations citing each title. The combination of journal title mentions and number of citing dissertations created a ranking for comparison across institutions. Our study presents text mining as a reliable and less time-intensive option for certain types of bibliometric analyses and also shows the utility of a ranked score approach (CD rank) for making cross-institutional citation comparisons. Over the last ten years, the rate of valorisation of theses in general medicine (GM) has increased, particularly thanks to the creation of departments of GM. In Saint-Étienne, students are asked to write their thesis in article format and to submit it to a scientific journal. This study questioned the point of view of post-graduate MG students on this valorisation. They describe the valorisation as an added value of their work, which is acquired in the form of personal experience or by the dissemination of their writing to a more or less large audience depending on the subject. These ideas are often acquired in the course of the thesis work. The article format is well received, as it is reassuring with its already familiar writing codes. However, the editorial constraints it requires can sometimes be a source of difficulty. The importance of the thesis supervisor is also emphasised by the students. The study aims to answer the question “how has the interest in organizations followed a course over the years in the field of sociology in Turkey?". For this purpose, open access doctorate dissertations under the sociology department in the National Thesis Center of the Council of Higher Education were examined. The findings, contrary to the trend in the west, show an increasing interest in organizational sociology, especially after the 2000s. In fact, within this period, it seems possible to mention the existence of a stable interest, which is dominated by a critical perspective at a rate close to half.

In 2008 Meier and Conkling first tested Google Scholar's coverage of the engineering literature against citations gathered from the Compendex database. Since that time, other studies have used the same methodology and found improvement in Google Scholar's coverage. This study uses engineering dissertations from Proquest Dissertations & Theses to create a data set of citations for the comparison of fee-based databases, Compendex and Scopus, against Google Scholar. From 1950 to 2017 Google Scholar outperformed both Compendex and Scopus in discoverability of citations in nine engineering subjects. The metadata of theses and dissertations are inserted in the repositories automatically or manually, in Dublin Core format, different from the one used by the libraries, generating duplicity of work. The objective is to compare the procedures of thematic treatment of theses and dissertations existing in the online catalogue and in the repository, through the analysis of subject metadata. An exploratory study was carried out with a case study on the use of vocabulary control in theses and dissertations metadata, with the institutional repository of São Paulo State University and the Athena online catalog of the same institution. The exploratory study had two stages: documentary study of the historical trajectory of treatment of theses and dissertations at university and analysis of procedures of thematic treatment of theses and dissertations in databases, by authors and catalogers. The analysis of thematic treatment procedures employed observation of functioning and of routines and patterns, for evaluation of vocabulary control in the analysis of subject metadata. The results obtained revealed that the vocabulary control is not done in the search interfaces for information retrieval and neither in the alphabetical list of keywords, which means lack of guidance to authors, regarding the assignment of descriptors. The analyses showed two thematic treatments, which results in different subject representations, in natural language, in the repository, and in controlled language, in the catalogue. Two proposals were elaborated for the thematic treatment in subject metadata of theses and dissertations in repositories and library catalogues. It is concluded that the proposals may be assisted by the elaboration of an indexing policy of the repository that foresees the sharing of data resulting from self-archiving of theses and dissertations with the catalogue and that can accept the attribution of controlled vocabulary descriptors, besides the attribution of keywords. Many young scientists are trained in research groups, yet little is known about how individual doctoral dissertations are carved out of collaborative research projects. This question is particularly pronounced in high-energy physics, where thousands of physicists share an experiment’s apparatus, data, and the authorship of publications. Based on qualitative interviews with researchers working at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, this paper analyses what makes a PhD dissertation ‘doable’ in this context. Describing the levels of work organisation, the challenges, and the actors involved in constructing ‘doable’ dissertations in collaborative research, I argue that doctoral dissertations are the emergent product of alignment work performed throughout the PhD. Individualisation is achieved by temporally, qualitatively and formally distinguishing dissertations from work on collective publications. I discuss how these processes shape the roles of students and advisors, and the content and value of dissertations in collaborative research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
