Lymphatic vessels play a crucial role in activating anti-tumor immune surveillance but also contribute to metastasis and systemic tumor progression. Whether distinct lymphatic phenotypes exist that govern the switch between immunity and metastasis remains unclear. Here we reveal that cytotoxic immunity normalizes lymphatic function and uncouples immune and metastatic potential. We find that in mice and humans, intratumoral lymphatic vessel density negatively correlates with productive cytotoxic immune responses and identify IFNγ as an intrinsic inhibitor of lymphangiogenesis. Specific deletion of the Ifngr1 in lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) greatly expanded the intratumoral lymphatic network and drove the emergence of a tip-like endothelial state, promoting lymph node metastasis but not dendritic cell migration. IFNγ inhibits oxidative phosphorylation, which is required for proliferation and acquisition of the pathologic transcriptional state. Our data indicate that IFNγ induces a phenotypic switch in tumor-associated lymphatic vessels to reinforce canonical immune surveillance and block metastasis.

The force produced by a muscle depends on its contractile history, yet human movement simulations typically employ muscle models that define the force-length relationship from measurements of fiber force during isometric contractions. In these muscle models, the total force-length curve can have a negative slope at fiber lengths greater than the fiber length at which peak isometric force is produced. This region of negative stiffness can cause numerical instability in simulations. Experiments have found that the steady-state force in a muscle fiber following active stretching is greater than the force produced during a purely isometric contraction. This behavior is called residual force enhancement. We present a constitutive model that exhibits force enhancement, implemented as a hyperelastic material in the febio finite element software. There is no consensus on the mechanisms responsible for force enhancement; we adopt the assumption that the passive fiber force depends on the sarcomere length at the instant that the muscle is activated above a threshold. We demonstrate the numerical stability of our model using an eigenvalue analysis and by simulating a muscle whose fibers are of different lengths. We then use a three-dimensional muscle geometry to verify the effect of force enhancement on the development of stress and the distribution of fiber lengths. Our proposed muscle material model is one of the few models available that exhibits force enhancement and is suitable for simulations of active lengthening. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) hold promise for cancer therapy. This study aimed to evaluate their impact on tumor and non-tumor cell number, viability, and morphology. Antitumor activity was tested on U-87MG (glioblastoma) and DU-145 (prostate cancer) cell lines. Treatment with AgNPs notably reached a reduction of U-87MG and DU-145 cell growth by 89.30% and 79.74%, respectively, resulting in slower growth rates. AgNPs induced DNA damage, evidenced by reduced nuclear area and DNA content via fluorescent image-based analyses. Conversely, HFF-1 non-tumor cells displayed no significant changes post-AgNPs exposure. Viability assays revealed substantial reductions in U-87MG and DU-145 cells (79% and 63% in MTT assays, 30% and 52.2% in high-content analyses), while HFF-1 cells exhibited lower sensitivity. Tumor cells had notably lower IC 50 values than non-tumor cells, indicating selective susceptibility. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed morphological changes post-AgNPs administration, including increased vacuoles, myelin figures, membrane ghosts, cellular extravasation, and membrane projections. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the cesarean section scars on the mean pulsatility index (PI) of the uterine artery Doppler between 20 and 34 weeks of gestation. A secondary objective was to assess the association between previous cesarean section and adverse maternal/perinatal outcomes., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with pregnant women who had their deliveries between March 2014 and February 2023. PI of the uterine arteries Doppler was performed transvaginally between 20-24 weeks and transabdominally between 28-34 weeks. The following variables were considered adverse perinatal outcomes: birth weight < 10th percentile for gestational age, preeclampsia, premature birth, placental abruption, perinatal death, postpartum hemorrhage, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission., Results: A total of 479 pregnant women were included in the final statistical analysis, being that 70.6% (338/479) had no (Group I) and 29.4% (141/479) had at least one previous cesarean section (Group II). Pregnant women with a previous cesarean had higher median of mean PI (1.06 vs. 0.97, p = 0.044) and median MoM of mean PI uterine arteries Doppler (1.06 vs. 0.98, p = 0.037) than pregnant women without previous cesarean section at ultrasound 20-24 weeks. Pregnant women with a previous cesarean section had higher median of mean PI (0.77 vs. 0.70, p < 0.001) and mean MoM PI uterine arteries Doppler (1.08 vs. 0.99, p < 0.001) than pregnant women without previous cesarean section at ultrasound 28-34 weeks. Pregnant women with ≥ 2 previous cesarean sections had a higher median of mean PI uterine arteries Doppler than those with no previous cesarean sections (1.19 vs. 0.97, p = 0.036). Group II had a lower risk of postpartum hemorrhage (aPR 0.31, 95% CI 0.13-0.75, p = 0.009) and composite neonatal outcome (aPR 0.66, 95% CI 0.49-0.88, p = 0.006). Group II had a higher risk of APGAR score at the 5th minute < 7 (aPR 0.75, 95% CI 1.49-51.29, p = 0.016)., Conclusion: The number of previous cesarean sections had a significant influence on the mean PI uterine arteries Doppler between 20-24 and 28-34 weeks of gestation. Previous cesarean section was an independent predictor of postpartum hemorrhage and APGAR score at the 5th minute < 7. Water contamination with toxic metals causes harmful effects on the environment and to human health. Although cucurbiturils have carboxyl groups in their portal that can interact with metal ions, there is a lack of studies about their use as metal adsorbent. This scenario has motivated conduction of the present study, which addresses the use of cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) for adsorbing Pb and Cr from water samples, in free forms and immobilized in poly(urethane) sponges. The adsorption kinetics revealed that CB[8] leads to faster adsorption compared to CB[6], with equilibrium achieved in 8 h for CB[8] and 48 h for CB[6] for both metals, and achieved up to 80% of decrease in metal concentration. The Langmuir isotherm model provided a better description of adsorption for Cr and Pb in CB[6] and Pb in CB[8] with a maximum concentration adsorbed of 32.47 mg g -1 for Pb in CB[6], while the Dubinin-Radushkevich model was more suitable for Cr adsorption in CB[8]. Sponges containing CB[6] and CB[8] have proven to be efficient for Pb and Cr remediation in tannery effluent samples, reducing Cr and Pb concentration by 42 and 33%, respectively. The results indicate that CB[6] and CB[8], whether used in their pure form or integrated into sponges, exhibit promising potential for efficiently adsorbing metals in aqueous contaminated environments., (© 2024. Objectives: Maternal physical activity may impact behavioral and electrophysiological aspects of brain function, with short- and long-term effects on pre- and postnatal neurodevelopment of the offspring. This study evaluated in the rat the effects of maternal voluntary physical activity (MVPA) on food intake and weight gain in the dams, as well as anxiety-like behavior, short-term memory and the brain excitability-related phenomenon known as cortical spreading depression (CSD) on the mother-pup dyad. Methods: Female Wistar rats (n=33) were individually housed in cages containing a running wheel for a 30-days adaptation period before mating. Rats were classified as inactive (I); active (A) or very active (VA) according to the distance spontaneously travelled daily. During gestation, the dams continued to have access to the running wheel. Mothers and their respective pups (1 pup per mother) were evaluated in the open field test (OFT), object recognition test (ORT), elevated plus maze test (EPMT) and the CSD propagation features. Results: MVPA was directly associated with increased food intake and weight gain during gestation, and maternal anxiolytic-like behavioral responses in the OFT. Pups from VA mothers showed a high discrimination index for shape recognition memory (ORT) and decreased propagation velocities of CSD, when compared with the inactive group. Discussion: The data suggest that MVPA during the gestational period induces neuroplasticity and may modulate the brain functions in the mother-infant dyad in the rat.

Habitat loss and fragmentation are drivers of biodiversity loss, such as Euglossini bees in continental regions. Knowledge about these effects on this group of pollinators in coastal regions is still incipient and needs to be further investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of landscape structure on the abundance, richness, diversity and species composition of Euglossini bees on the coast of the Brazilian Amazon. We mapped the surrounding landscape around 48 sampling points in the east of the island of Marajó, Pará, Brazil where we collected bees using chemical baits. We used Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) to evaluate the effects of landscape structure (composition and configuration) on the abundance, richness, diversity and composition of Euglossini bees. We collected a total of 1017 males belonging to four genera and 22 species. Forest cover (%) and landscape heterogeneity were the best predictors of the bee community. Increased forest cover positively affected the abundance, richness and diversity of bees at a local scale. On the other hand, abundance, richness and diversity decreased with increasing landscape heterogeneity, also at a local scale. The hypothesis that the amount of habitat favors Euglossini communities was corroborated by our results. Based on our conclusions, landscapes with greater forest cover can effectively contribute to the conservation of these bees and their pollination services along the Amazon coast., (© 2023. Objective: To develop and update evidence-based and consensus-based guidelines on laparoscopic and robotic pancreatic surgery., Summary Background Data: Minimally invasive pancreatic surgery (MIPS), including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, is complex and technically demanding. Minimizing the risk for patients requires stringent, evidence-based guidelines. Since the International Miami Guidelines on MIPS in 2019, new developments and key publications have been reported, necessitating an update., Methods: Evidence-based guidelines on 22 topics in 8 domains were proposed: terminology, indications, patients, procedures, surgical techniques and instrumentation, assessment tools, implementation and training, and artificial intelligence. The Brescia Internationally Validated European Guidelines on Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Surgery (EGUMIPS, September 2022) used the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) methodology to assess the evidence and develop guideline recommendations, the Delphi method to establish consensus on the recommendations among the Expert Committee, and the AGREE II-GRS tool for guideline quality assessment and external validation by a Validation Committee., Results: Overall, 27 European experts, 6 international experts, 22 international Validation Committee members, 11 Jury Committee members, 18 Research Committee members, and 121 registered attendees of the 2-day meeting were involved in the development and validation of the guidelines. In total, 98 recommendations were developed, including 33 on laparoscopic, 34 on robotic, and 31 on general MIPS, covering 22 topics in 8 domains. Out of 98 recommendations, 97 reached at least 80% consensus among the experts and congress attendees, and all recommendations were externally validated by the Validation Committee., Conclusions: The EGUMIPS evidence-based guidelines on laparoscopic and robotic MIPS can be applied in current clinical practice to provide guidance to patients, surgeons, policy-makers, and medical societies., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). Intermittent fasting (IF) and physical exercise (PE) have beneficial psychological and physiological effects, improving memory and anxiety-like behavior. However, the impact of this combination on brain electrophysiological patterns is unknown. We aimed to evaluate the behavior and parameters of a brain excitability-related phenomenon named cortical spreading depression (CSD) in young rats (31-87 days of life) submitted to IF and treadmill PE for eight weeks. Sixty-four male and female Wistar rats aged 24 days were randomized into control, IF, PE, and IF+PE groups. Behavioral tests (open field (OF), object recognition, and elevated plus maze (EPM)) were performed, and the CSD propagation features were recorded. IF caused behavioral responses indicative of anxiety (lower number of entries and time spent in the OF center and EPM open arms). IF also reduced the discrimination index for object recognition memory tests and increased the propagation velocity of CSD. PE rats displayed more entries into the OF center and lowered CSD propagation speed. Data suggest that IF worsens anxiety-like behavior and memory and accelerates CSD in young rats. In contrast, PE reverted the unfavorable effects of IF. The brain effects of IF and PE at younger ages are recommended for study.

Objective: To develop a protocol for the defatting of steatotic liver grafts during long-term ex situ normothermic machine perfusion., Background: Despite the alarming increase in donor organ shortage, the highly prevalent fatty liver grafts are often discarded due to the risk of primary nonfunction. Effective strategies preventing such outcomes are currently lacking. An exciting new avenue is the introduction of ex situ normothermic machine perfusion (NMP), enabling a liver to remain fully functional for up to 2 weeks and providing a unique window of opportunity for defatting before transplantation., Methods: Over a 5-year period, 23 discarded liver grafts and 28 partial livers from our resection program were tested during ex situ normothermic machine perfusion. The steatosis degree was determined on serial biopsies by expert pathologists, and triglyceride contents were measured simultaneously., Results: Of 51 liver grafts, 20 were steatotic, with up to 85% macrovesicular steatosis, and were perfused for up to 12 days. Ten livers displayed marked (5 of which almost complete) loss of fat, while the other 10 did not respond to long-term perfusion. Successful defatting was related to prolonged perfusion, automated glucose control, circadian nutrition, and L-carnitine/fenofibrate supplementation. Pseudopeliotic steatosis and the associated activation of Kupffer/stellate cells were unexpected processes that might contribute to defatting. Synthetic and metabolic functions remained preserved for most grafts until perfusion ended., Conclusion: Ex situ long-term perfusion effectively reduces steatosis while preserving organ viability and may in the future allow transplantation of primarily unusable high-risk grafts, significantly increasing the number of organs available for transplantation., (Copyright © 2023 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Objective: This study aims at establishing benchmark values for best achievable outcomes following open major anatomic hepatectomy for liver tumors of all dignities., Background: Outcomes after open major hepatectomies vary widely lacking reference values for comparisons among centers, indications, types of resections, and minimally invasive procedures., Methods: A standard benchmark methodology was used covering consecutive patients, who underwent open major anatomic hepatectomy from 44 high-volume liver centers from 5 continents over a 5-year period (2016-2020). Benchmark cases were low-risk non-cirrhotic patients without significant comorbidities treated in high-volume centers (≥30 major liver resections/year). Benchmark values were set at the 75th percentile of median values of all centers. Minimum follow-up period was 1 year in each patient., Results: Of 8044 patients, 2908 (36%) qualified as benchmark (low-risk) cases. Benchmark cutoffs for all indications include R0 resection ≥78%; liver failure (grade B/C) ≤10%; bile leak (grade B/C) ≤18%; complications ≥grade 3 and CCI ® ≤46% and ≤9 at 3 months, respectively. Benchmark values differed significantly between malignant and benign conditions so that reference values must be adjusted accordingly. Extended right hepatectomy (H1, 4-8 or H4-8) disclosed a higher cutoff for liver failure, while extended left (H1-5,8 or H2-5,8) were associated with higher cutoffs for bile leaks, but had superior oncologic outcomes, when compared to formal left hepatectomy (H1-4 or H2-4). Introduction: Melatonin (MLT) reportedly has beneficial effects in neurological disorders involving brain excitability (e.g., Epilepsy and Migraine) and behavioral patterns (e.g., Anxiety and Depression). This study was performed to investigate, in the developing rat brain, the effect of early-in-life administration of two different doses of exogenous MLT on behavioral (anxiety and memory) and electrophysiological (CSD analysis) aspects of brain function. Additionally, brain levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), both cellular indicators of redox balance status, were evaluated. We hypothesize that MLT differentially affects the behavioral and CSD parameters as a function of the MLT dose., Materials and Methods: Male Wistar rats received, from the 7th to the 27th postnatal day (PND), on alternate days, vehicle solution, or 10 mg/kg/or 40 mg/kg MLT (MLT-10 and MLT-40 groups), or no treatment (intact group). To perform behavioral and cognition analysis, from PND30 to PND32, they were tested in the open field apparatus, first for anxiety (PND30) and then for object recognition memory tasks: spatial position recognition (PND31) and shape recognition (PND32). On PND34, they were tested in the elevated plus maze. From PND36 to 42, the excitability-related phenomenon known as cortical spreading depression (CSD) was recorded, and its features were analyzed., Results: Treatment with MLT did not change the animals' body weight or blood glucose levels. The MLT-10 treatment, but not the MLT-40 treatment, was associated with behaviors that suggest less anxiety and improved memory. MLT-10 and MLT-40 treatments, respectively, decelerated and accelerated CSD propagation (speed of 2.86 ± 0.14 mm/min and 3.96 ± 0.16 mm/min), compared with the control groups (3.3 ± 0.10 mm/min and 3.25 ± 0.11 mm/min, for the intact and vehicle groups, respectively; p < 0.01). Identifying human leukocyte antigen (HLA) haplotype-homozygous donors for the generation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines permits the construction of biobanks immunologically compatible with significant numbers of individuals for use in therapy. However, two questions must be addressed to create such a bank: how many cell lines are necessary to match most of the recipient population and how many people should be tested to find these donors? In Japan and the UK, 50 and 100 distinct HLA-A, -B, and -DRB1 triple-homozygous haplotypes would cover 90% of those populations, respectively. Using data from the Brazilian National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors (REDOME), encompassing 4,017,239 individuals, we identified 1,906 distinct triple-homozygous HLA haplotypes. In Brazil, 559 triple-homozygous cell lines cover 95% of the population, and 3.8 million people would have to be screened. Hyperprolactinemia is a pathological condition resulting from increased prolactin that directly affects reproduction, as this condition inhibits the release of LH, FSH and gonadal steroidogenesis, bringing several negative clinical associations in reproduction. In contrast, melatonin (MEL) plays an important role in the regulation of steroidogenesis and modulates damages to the process of spermatogenesis. The objective was to analyze the protective effects of exogenous melatonin on the testis of hyperprolactinemic adult rats. Forty-eight male rats were used, divided into two treatment periods: 30 and 60 days, each treatment was subdivided into three groups: Control, Hyper (hyperprolactinemia), and Hyper+MEL (hyperprolactinemia and melatonin). Treatment with melatonin was 200 μg/100 g, subcutaneously. Induction of hyperprolactinemia was obtained with a dose of 4 mg/kg of domperidone, subcutaneously. The results of the histopathology demonstrated that the animals in the Hyper group presented degeneration of germ cells when compared to the control. In addition, the degenerations were presented in smaller quantities in the Hyper+MEL, in both treatment periods, evidencing the benefits of the melatonin in gonadal regeneration. The Hyper group of both treatment periods showed a decrease in tubular diameter, epithelium height, and tubular area, in addition to a decrease in Sertoli cells, when compared to the control and the Hyper+MEL group. Background: An unbalance in the renin-angiotensin (Ang) system (RAS) between the Ang II/AT1 and Ang-(1-7)/Mas axis appears to be involved in preeclampsia (PE), in which a reduction in Ang-(1-7) was observed. Here, we tested whether the reduction in the activity of the Ang-(1-7)/Mas axis could be a contributing factor for the development of PE, using Mas-deficient (Mas-/-) mice., Methods and Results: Cardiovascular parameters were evaluated by telemetry before, during pregnancy and 4 days postpartum in 20-week-old Mas-/- and wild-type (WT) female mice. Mas-/- mice presented reduced arterial blood pressure (BP) at baseline (91.3 ± 0.8 in Mas-/- vs. 94.0 ± 0.9 mmHg in WT, Diastolic, P<0.05). However, after the 13th day of gestation, BP in Mas-/- mice started to increase, time-dependently, and at day 19 of pregnancy, these animals presented a higher BP in comparison with WT group (90.5 ± 0.7 in Mas-/- vs. 80.3 ± 3.5 mmHg in WT, Diastolic D19, P<0.0001). Moreover, pregnant Mas-/- mice presented fetal growth restriction, increase in urinary protein excretion as compared with nonpregnant Mas-/-, oliguria, increase in cytokines, endothelial dysfunction and reduced ACE, AT1R, ACE2, ET-1A, and eNOS placental mRNA, similar to some of the clinical manifestations found in the development of PE., Conclusions: These results show that Mas-deletion produces a PE-like state in FVB/N mice., (© 2023 The Author(s). High-throughput sequencing of two lettuces showing virus-like symptoms in France provided evidence of infection by members of the family Secoviridae . One plant (JG1) had a complex mixed infection that involved, among others, a novel waikavirus (lettuce waikavirus 1) and two isolates of a sequivirus related to lettuce mottle virus (LeMoV). The second lettuce plant (JG2) was singly infected by LeMoV. Complete genomic sequences were obtained for all four isolates and, in addition, near complete genome sequences were obtained for other LeMoV or LeMoV-related isolates (from French cultivated and wild lettuces and from a Brazilian cultivated lettuce) and for two isolates of another family Asteraceae -infecting sequivirus, dandelion yellow mosaic virus (DaYMV). Analysis of these genomic sequences allows the proposal of tentative genome organization for the various viruses and clarification of their phylogenetic relationships. Sequence and host range comparisons point to significant differences between the two sequivirus isolates identified in the JG1 plant and LeMoV isolates from France and Brazil, suggesting they belong to a novel species for which the name lettuce star mosaic virus is proposed., Competing Interests: The author(s) declare no conflict of interest.

Sophisticated muscle material models are required to perform detailed finite element simulations of soft tissue; however, state-of-the-art muscle models are not among the built-in materials in popular commercial finite element software packages. Implementing user-defined muscle material models is challenging for two reasons: deriving the tangent modulus tensor for a material with a complex strain energy function is tedious and programing the algorithm to compute it is error-prone. These challenges hinder widespread use of such models in software that employs implicit, nonlinear, Newton-type finite element methods. We implement a muscle material model in Ansys using an approximation of the tangent modulus, which simplifies its derivation and implementation. Three test models were constructed by revolving a rectangle (RR), a right trapezoid (RTR), and a generic obtuse trapezoid (RTO) around the muscle's centerline. A displacement was applied to one end of each muscle, holding the other end fixed. The results were validated against analogous simulations in FEBio, which uses the same muscle model but with the exact tangent modulus. Overall, good agreement was found between our Ansys and FEBio simulations, though some noticeable discrepancies were observed. For the elements along the muscle's centerline, the root-mean-square-percentage error in the Von Mises stress was 0.00%, 3.03%, and 6.75% for the RR, RTR, and RTO models, respectively; similar errors in longitudinal strain were observed. Objective: To evaluate the performance of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ( 18 F-FDG PET/CT) radiomic features to predict overall survival (OS) in patients with locally advanced uterine cervical carcinoma., Methods: Longitudinal and retrospective study that evaluated 50 patients with cervical epidermoid carcinoma (clinical stage IB2 to IVA according to FIGO). Segmentation of the 18F-FDG PET/CT tumors was performed using the LIFEx software, generating the radiomic features. We used the Mann-Whitney test to select radiomic features associated with the clinical outcome (death), excluding the features highly correlated with each other with Spearman correlation. Subsequently, ROC curves and a Kaplan-Meier analysis were performed. A p -value < 0.05 were considered significant., Results: The median follow-up was 23.5 months and longer than 24 months in all surviving patients. Independent predictors for OS were found-SUVpeak with an AUC of 0.74, sensitivity of 77.8%, and specificity of 72.7% ( p = 0.006); and the textural feature gray-level run-length matrix GLRLM&#95;LRLGE, with AUC of 0.74, sensitivity of 72.2%, and specificity of 81.8% ( p = 0.005). When we used the derived cut-off points from these ROC curves (12.76 for SUVpeak and 0.001 for GLRLM&#95;LRLGE) in a Kaplan-Meier analysis, we can see two different groups (one with an overall survival probability of approximately 90% and the other with 30%). Objective: To define benchmark values for liver transplantation (LT) in patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHC) enabling unbiased comparisons., Background: Transplantation for PHC is used with reluctance in many centers and even contraindicated in several countries. Although benchmark values for LT are available, there is a lack of specific data on LT performed for PHC., Methods: PHC patients considered for LT after Mayo-like protocol were analyzed in 17 reference centers in 2 continents over the recent 5-year period (2014-2018). The minimum follow-up was 1 year. Benchmark patients were defined as operated at high-volume centers (≥50 overall LT/year) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, with a tumor diameter <3 cm, negative lymph nodes, and with the absence of relevant comorbidities. Benchmark cutoff values were derived from the 75th to 25th percentiles of the median values of all benchmark centers., Results: One hundred thirty-four consecutive patients underwent LT after completion of the neoadjuvant treatment. Of those, 89.6% qualified as benchmark cases. Benchmark cutoffs were 90-day mortality ≤5.2%; comprehensive complication index at 1 year of ≤33.7; grade ≥3 complication rates ≤66.7%. These values were better than benchmark values for other indications of LT. Five-year disease-free survival was largely superior compared with a matched group of nodal negative patients undergoing curative liver resection (n=106) (62% vs 32%, P <0.001)., Conclusion: This multicenter benchmark study demonstrates that LT offers excellent outcomes with superior oncological results in early stage PHC patients, even in candidates for surgery. The spatio-temporal assessment of water and carbon fluxes in Brazil's Northeast region (NEB) allows for a better understanding of these surface flux patterns in areas with different vegetation physiognomies. The NEB is divided into four biomes: Amazon, Cerrado, Caatinga, and Atlantic Forest. Land degradation is a growing problem, particularly in susceptible areas of the Caatinga biome, such as the seasonally dry tropical forest. Furthermore, this region has experienced climatic impacts, such as severe droughts. Due to increasing human pressure, the Caatinga's natural land cover undergoes drastic changes, making it a region particularly vulnerable to desertification. In this study, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) and gross primary production (GPP) were validated in two contrasting areas, dense Caatinga and sparse Caatinga, using eddy covariance (EC) data and then investigated their behavior over 21 years (2000-2021) for the NEB. MODIS products explained around 60% of the variations in ET and GPP, showing higher accuracy in dense Caatinga, while areas of sparse Caatinga presented the lowest GPP, indicating that land degradation has reduced the photosynthetic activity of the vegetation in this area. Based on the analysis of ET and GPP over 21 years, we observed a greater dependence of the sparse Caatinga on climate variability, demonstrating a stronger resilience of dense Caatinga to climate effects. In comparison with the other biomes of the NEB region, we found lower rates of ET and GPP in the Caatinga biome, with averages similar to the Sparse Caatinga. In comparison with the other biomes in the NEB region, we found the lowest averages of ET and GPP in the Caatinga biome, similar to values found in the sparse Caatinga. Most of the energy consumed worldwide comes from non-renewable sources, such as oil derivatives, making it necessary to search for renewable, clean energy sources, with emphasis on biomass from agricultural and industrial waste. Coconut shell pellets (CSPs) and cashew nut shell pellets (CNSPs) were manufactured and subsequently subjected to chemical, thermal and exhaust gas analyses of their combustion. Mean temperature results in the combustion area were 366.44 ± 84.79°C (CSPs) and 295.00 ± 89.47°C (CNSPs). The exhaust gas combustion values were 19.43 ± 0.57% (CSPs) and 18.75 ± 0.77% (CNSPs) of O 2 , 2348 ± 1241 ppm (CSPs) and 2901 ± 499 ppm (CNSPs) of CO, 14.92 ± 5.06 ppm (CSPs) and 39.83 ± 10.91 ppm (CNSPs) of NO x , and 441.25 ± 130.41 ppm (CSPs) and 2841.50 ± 765.26 ppm (CNSPs) of CH 4 . In conclusion, the combustion process of CSPs proved to be less polluting and more energy efficient when compared with CNSPs. The analyses of the exhaust gases from the combustion of these biomasses can serve as a basis for the creation of safety parameters and public policies to regulate the use of biomass for energy purposes.

Objective: To present an updated and evidence-based guideline for the use of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to assess body composition in clinical practice., Materials and Methods: This Official Position was developed by the Scientific Committee of the Brazilian Association of Bone Assessment and Metabolism (Associação Brasileira de Avaliação Óssea e Osteometabolismo, ABRASSO) and experts in the field who were invited to contribute to the preparation of this document. The Neotropical bee genus Tetragona Lepeletier Serville, 1828 is characterized among stingless bees by having a yellow pigmented maculation on body, especially on the clypeus, lower region of the paraocular area and mesosome, velvety genal area, a long and slender mesotibial spur and a glabrous propodeal triangle. The T. clavipes species-group is mainly characterized by having workers with elongated setae on T6, with about 2x the length of setae on T5 and hyaline wings. This group is composed of five species, two of which are described here as new: T. clavipes (Fabricius, 1804), T. perangulata (Cockerell, 1917), T. quadrangula (Lepeletier, 1936), T. mourei sp. nov. and T. korotaii sp. nov.). In this study, we synonymize T. dissecta Moure, 2000 and T. elongata Lepeletier Serville, 1828 under T. clavipes and we provide an identification key for the workers to the species in T. clavipes species-group.

Background: The use of insoles, which is increasingly widespread, can promote changes in biomechanics during running., Research Question: Can the use of insoles with various patterns of infracapital support influence factors related to the dynamic stability of the lower limbs during running on a treadmill in recreational runners?, Methods: This is controlled single-blind repeated measures. Static baropodometric data were collected, as well as kinematic data for the lower limbs and electromyographic data for the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius muscles, for twelve recreational runners on a treadmill using four models of insoles (neutral and with forefoot elements - infracapital bar)., Results: Neutral insoles were able to reduce laterolateral displacement, increase the displacement of the mass to the posterior, and increase the lateral rotation of the left knee and medial rotation of the right hip. Insoles with a 2 mm total infracapital bar were able to move the mass to the posterior, increase laterolateral displacement and activate the gluteus medius. Insoles with a 2 mm medial infracapital bar were able to increase the displacement of the mass to the posterior, increase the adduction of left hip and the medial rotation of right hip, and activate the gluteus medius. We analyzed Cryptosporidium spp. in fecal samples of wild cervids (Ozotoceros bezoarticus, Blastocerus dichotomus, Mazama nana, Mazama americana, and Mazama bororo) from many Brazilian regions, a fact unprecedented in the literature. Sniffer dogs were used to collect 936 fecal samples of cervids from 14 Brazilian localities. Cervids species were identified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) performed from genomic DNA extracted from 563 fecal samples of Ozotoceros bezoarticus, Blastocerus dichotomus, Mazama nana, Mazama americana, and Mazama bororo. Cryptosporidium spp. oocyst screening was performed using malachite green negative staining. Nested PCR (nPCR) protocols targeting the 18S rRNA and GP60 genes followed by genetic sequencing were performed for Cryptosporidium spp. detection and Cryptosporidium parvum subtyping, respectively. Nested PCR targeting actin gene and genetic sequencing were performed in samples with non-identified Cryptosporidium species by 18S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The association between the occurrence of Cryptosporidium and the presence of bovines in the same locality was evaluated using Fisher's exact test. The positivity rates of diagnostic methods were compared by McNemar test and the Kappa correlation coefficient. The prevalence rates of Cryptosporidium spp. in cervids were 1.42% (8/563) and 0.36% (2/563) by nPCR and malachite green negative staining, respectively. C. parvum IIaA16G3R1 isolate was identified in three fecal samples from M. americana, two from M. nana and one from B. dichotomus. Cryptosporidium ryanae were found in one sample from B. dichotomus. Objective: The aim of this study was to maintain long-term full function and viability of partial livers perfused ex situ for sufficient duration to enable ex situ treatment, repair, and regeneration., Background: Organ shortage remains the single most important factor limiting the success of transplantation. Autotransplantation in patients with nonresectable liver tumors is rarely feasible due to insufficient tumor-free remnant tissue. This limitation could be solved by the availability of long-term preservation of partial livers that enables functional regeneration and subsequent transplantation., Methods: Partial swine livers were perfused with autologous blood after being procured from healthy pigs following 70% in-vivo resection, leaving only the right lateral lobe. Partial human livers were recovered from patients undergoing anatomic right or left hepatectomies and perfused with a blood based perfusate together with various medical additives. Assessment of physiologic function during perfusion was based on markers of hepatocyte, cholangiocyte, vascular and immune compartments, as well as histology., Results: Following the development phase with partial swine livers, 21 partial human livers (14 right and 7 left hemi-livers) were perfused, eventually reaching the targeted perfusion duration of 1 week with the final protocol. Objective: The aim of this study was to define robust benchmark values for the surgical treatment of perihilar cholangiocarcinomas (PHC) to enable unbiased comparisons., Background: Despite ongoing efforts, postoperative mortality and morbidity remains high after complex liver surgery for PHC. Benchmark data of best achievable results in surgical PHC treatment are however still lacking., Methods: This study analyzed consecutive patients undergoing major liver surgery for PHC in 24 high-volume centers in 3 continents over the recent 5-year period (2014-2018) with a minimum follow-up of 1 year in each patient. Benchmark patients were those operated at high-volume centers (≥50 cases during the study period) without the need for vascular reconstruction due to tumor invasion, or the presence of significant co-morbidities such as severe obesity (body mass index ≥35), diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases. Benchmark cutoff values were derived from the 75th or 25th percentile of the median values of all benchmark centers., Results: Seven hundred eight (39%) of a total of 1829 consecutive patients qualified as benchmark cases. Benchmark cut-offs included: R0 resection ≥57%, postoperative liver failure (International Study Group of Liver Surgery): ≤35%; in-hospital and 3-month mortality rates ≤8% and ≤13%, respectively; 3-month grade 3 complications and the CCI: ≤70% and ≤30.5, respectively; bile leak-rate: ≤47% and 5-year overall survival of ≥39.7%. Centers operating mostly on complex cases disclosed better outcome including lower post-operative liver failure rates (4% vs 13%; P = 0.002). The Brazilian semiarid region presents a physical water scarcity and high seasonal and interannual irregularities of precipitation, known as a region with periodic droughts. This region is mainly covered by the Caatinga biome, recognized as a Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest (SDTF). Soil water availability directly impacts the ecosystem's functioning, characterized by low fertility and sparse vegetation cover during the dry season, making it a fragile ecosystem vulnerable to climatic variations. Additionally, this region has been suffering from several issues due to human activities over the centuries, which has resulted in extensive areas being severely degraded, which aggravates the impacts from climatic variations and the susceptibility to desertification. Thus, studying the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum in this region can help better understand the seasonal and annual behavior of the water and carbon fluxes. This study investigated the dynamics of water and carbon fluxes during four years (2013-2016) by using eddy covariance (EC) measurements within two areas of Caatinga (dense Caatinga (DC) and sparse Caatinga (SC)) that suffered anthropic pressures. The two study areas showed similar behavior in relation to physical parameters (air temperature, incoming radiation, vapor pressure deficit, and relative humidity), except for soil temperature. The SC area presented a surface temperature of 3 °C higher than the DC, related to their vegetation cover differences. The SC area had higher annual evapotranspiration, representing 74% of the precipitation for the DC area and 90% for the SC area. The two areas acted as a carbon sink during the study period, with the SC area showing a lower CO 2 absorption capacity. Introduction: This study evaluated the performance of the metal artifact reduction (MAR) tool in cone-beam computed tomographic scans using different fields of view (FOVs) in the detection of a root isthmus in mandibular molars with intraradicular posts., Methods: Twenty-eight teeth were scanned by micro-computed tomographic imaging (gold standard images). Thereafter, specimens were allocated into the following groups: gutta-percha (teeth without posts, n = 10), a prefabricated metal post (n = 9), and a fiberglass post (n = 9). Cone-beam computed tomographic scans were taken using 8 acquisition protocols, varying the size of the FOV (10 × 5.5 cm and 5 × 5.5 cm) and the MAR tool (disabled, low, normal, and high modes). A root isthmus was evaluated considering a 5-point scale. Data were analyzed considering a 5% significance level., Results: Intra- and interexaminer agreement varied from moderate to substantial. The frequency of correct diagnosis varied significantly in all groups regardless of the image acquisition protocol selected (P < .05). In the gutta-percha group, there was no difference in the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity values between the tested protocols. In the metal and fiberglass post groups, the accuracy values were higher with the "disabled" and "low" modes of the MAR tool regardless of the FOV size. This was also observed for the sensitivity values in the metal post group (P < .05)., Conclusions: The size of the FOV did not affect the performance of the MAR tool in the diagnosis of a root isthmus in molars with intraradicular posts. A multiclass analytical method to determine pesticides and mycotoxins in beer-related matrices based on the dilute and shoot approach was optimized and validated according to the European guidelines SANTE/12682/2019 and EC/401/2006. Extraction used acidified acetonitrile at 1% (v/v) acetic acid, followed by horizontal shaking homogenization, centrifugation, freeze-out step for cleanup, another centrifugation, and injection into a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry system. Linearity, detection and quantification limits, accuracy, and measurement uncertainty were evaluated, and 201, 184, and 176 analytes were validated for malt, beer, and brewers' spent grain, respectively. The limits of quantification ranged between 1 and 200 μg kg -1 and between 5 and 1000 μg kg -1 for beer and malt, respectively, and expanded uncertainties ranged between 9.7 and 50%, meeting the legislation requirements. A total of 40 samples have been analyzed thus far, and 36 of them exhibited the presence of some of the analyzed substances. The validated method is reliable and easy to apply for mycotoxin and pesticide determination in complex matrices.

In March 2013 it was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) the first cases of human infections with avian influenza virus A (H7N9). From 2013 to December 2019, 1568 cases have been reported with 616 deaths. H7N9 infection has been associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, and vaccination is currently the most effective way to prevent infections and consequently flu-related severe illness. Developing and producing vaccines against pandemic influenza viruses is the main strategy for a response to a possible pandemic. This study aims to present the production of three industrial lots under current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) of the active antigen used to produce the pandemic influenza vaccine candidate against A(H7N9). These batches were characterized and evaluated for quality standards and tested for immunogenicity in mice. The average yield was 173.50 ± 7.88 μg/mL of hemagglutinin and all the preparations met all the required specifications. The formulated H7N9 vaccine is poorly immunogenic and needs to be adjuvanted with an oil in water emulsion adjuvant (IB160) to achieve a best immune response, in a prime and in a boost scheme. This research had as objective to evaluate the occurrence and to characterize genetically the infections by Cryptosporidium in Mazama gouazoubira. By a non-invasive harvest methodology using trained sniffer dogs to locate fecal samples of cervids, 642 fecal samples were obtained from six Brazilian localities. The cervids species responsible for the excretion of each fecal sample were identified by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), using the mitochondrial cytochrome b target gene (cyst b) and the restriction enzymes Sspl, AflIII and BstN. From this identification, 437 fecal samples of M. gouazoubira were selected for research of Cryptosporidium spp. performed through negative staining with malachite green and polymerase chain reaction (nPCR), with the subunit of 18S rRNA gene, followed by sequencing the amplified products. In the samples that were diagnosed the presence of parasite species with zoonotic potential, genotyping was also performed using nPCR with the subunit of GP60 gene. Statistical analysis consisted of the Fisher exact test to verify the association of the presence of the enteroparasite in relation to the presence of cattle in each locality, and the McNemar tests and Kappa correlation coefficient used to compare the results obtained between the two diagnostic techniques. In the fecal samples of M. gouazoubira the occurrences of Cryptosporidium were diagnosed in 1.6% (7/437) and 1.1% (5/437), respectively, through nPCR and microscopy. Cryptosporidium. parvum was diagnosed in 100% (7/7) of the samples submitted to sequencing (18S gene). The IIaA16G3R1 subtype was diagnosed in five of the C. parvum samples submitted to genotyping (GP60 gene). Malignant liver tumours include a wide range of primary and secondary tumours. Although surgery remains the mainstay of curative treatment, modern therapies integrate a variety of neoadjuvant and adjuvant strategies and have achieved dramatic improvements in survival. Extensive tumour loads, which have traditionally been considered unresectable, are now amenable to curative treatment through systemic conversion chemotherapies followed by a variety of interventions such as augmentation of the healthy liver through portal vein occlusion, staged surgeries or ablation modalities. Liver transplantation is established in selected patients with hepatocellular carcinoma but is now emerging as a promising option in many other types of tumour such as perihilar cholangiocarcinomas, neuroendocrine or colorectal liver metastases. In this Review, we summarize the available therapies for the treatment of malignant liver tumours, with an emphasis on surgical and ablative approaches and how they align with other therapies such as modern anticancer drugs or radiotherapy. In addition, we describe three complex case studies of patients with malignant liver tumours. Finally, we discuss the outlook for future treatment, including personalized approaches based on molecular tumour subtyping, response to targeted drugs, novel biomarkers and precision surgery adapted to the specific tumour.

The bee genus Nogueirapis Moure is redescribed with the addition of new characters deriving from two new species from the Amazon rainforest. Nogueirapis batistai sp. nov. and N. rosariae sp. nov. are described and included in an identification key that covers all species of the genus. Occurrence records are updated for all species.

The present study examined 8 weeks of resistance training and its effects on muscle quality measures, plantar flexor muscle strength, muscle thickness and functional capacity in older women. Moreover, we tested if changes in muscle quality were associated with functional capacity. Twenty-four older women (66.3 ± 5.8 years; 69.0 ± 3.0 kg; 25.3 ± 1.4 kg·m -2 ) were recruited to the study. After completion of the baseline assessment, participants were randomly assigned to either the resistance training (RET, n = 12) or an active control group (CTR, n = 12). Muscle quality was evaluated through muscle echo intensity (MQ EI ) and specific tension (MQ ST ). Muscle thickness, unilateral plantar flexor muscle strength and functional tests were evaluated at baseline and after the training period. After 8 weeks, both MQ EI and MQ ST did not respond to the intervention. Furthermore, significant changes in stair climb performance (P < 0.05) were not associated with plantar flexor-derived muscle quality (P > 0.05). Finally, significant gains in muscle hypertrophy were observed in the RET group (P < 0.01), while muscle strength failed to change significantly (P > 0.05). Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Pequi fruit are obtained from the pequi tree (Caryocar coriaceum), from which the pulp and nut are used in order to extract an oil that is commonly used in popular medicine as an antiinflammatory agent, particularly for the treatment of colds, bronchitis and bronchopulmonary infections. Making use of the fixed oil of Caryocar coriaceum (FOCC), an attractive alternative for the treatment of diseases caused by exposure to environmental tobacco smoke., Aim of the Study: To evaluate whether oral intake FOCC provides beneficial effects in the respiratory system of rats submitted to a short-term secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure model., Materials and Methods: The experiments were performed on Wistar rats divided into 4 groups; in the SHS + O and SHS + T groups, the animals were pretreated orally with 0.5 mL of FOCC (SHS + O) or vehicle (Tween-80 [1%] solution) (SHS + T). Immediately after pretreatment, the animals were submitted to the SHS exposure protocol, for a total period of 14 days. Exposures were performed 6 times per day, with a duration of 40 min per exposure (5 cigarettes per exposure), followed by a 1-h interval between subsequent exposures. In the AA + O and AA + T groups, animals were submitted to daily oral pretreatment with 0.5 mL of FOCC (AA + O) or vehicle (AA + T). These animals were then subjected to the aforementioned exposure protocol, but using ambient air. After the exposure period, we investigated the effects of FOCC in respiratory mechanics in vivo (Newtonian resistance -R N , tissue elastance -H, tissue resistance -G, static compliance -C ST , inspiratory capacity -IC, PV loop area) histopathology and lung parenchymal morphometry in vitro (polymorphonuclear cells -PMN, mean alveolar diameter -L m , bronchoconstriction index -BCI), temporal evolution of subjects' masses, and percent composition of the FOCC., Results: Regarding the body mass of the animals, the results demonstrated an average body mass gain of 10.5 g for the animals in the AA + T group, and 15.5 g for those in the AA + O group. On the other hand, the body mass of animals in the SHS + T and SHS + O suffered an average loss of 14.4 and 4.75 g, respectively. Regarding respiratory system analyzes, our results demonstrated significant changes in all respiratory mechanics variables and lung parenchyma morphometry analyzed for the SHS + T group when compared to the AA + T group (p < 0,05), confirming the establishment of pulmonary injury induced by SHS exposure. Objective: To estimate the cost attributable to arterial hypertension, diabetes and obesity in the Unified Health System of Brazil in 2018., Method: The study estimated the cost attributable to non-communicable chronic diseases based on relative risk and population prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, considering the cost of hospitalizations, outpatient procedures, and medications distributed by the SUS to treat these diseases. Cost data were obtained from SUS information systems. The analysis explored the cost of disease according to sex and age in the adult populatio n ., Results: The total cost of hypertension, diabetes, and obesity in the SUS reached R$ 3.45 billion (95%CI: 3.15-3.75) in 2018, that is, more than US$ 890 million. Of this amount, 59% referred to the treatment of hypertension, 30% to diabetes, and 11% to obesity. The age group from 30 to 69 years accounted for 72% of the total costs, and women accounted for 56%. When obesity was considered separately as a risk factor for hypertension and diabetes, the cost attributable to this diseases reached R$ 1.42 billion (95%CI: 0.98-1.87), i.e., 41% of the total cost., Conclusions: The estimates of costs attributable to the main chronic diseases associated with inadequate diet revealed a heavy economic burden of these disorders for the SUS. The data show the need to prioritize integrated and intersectoral policies for the prevention and control of hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, and may support the advocacy for interventions such as fiscal and regulatory measures to ensure that the objectives of the United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition are met., Competing Interests: Conflitos de interesse. Background & Aims: In a variety of animal models, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (Ω3-FAs) conferred strong protective effects, alleviating hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury and steatosis, as well as enhancing regeneration after major tissue loss. Given these benefits along with its safety profile, we hypothesized that perioperative administration of Ω3-FAs in patients undergoing liver surgery may ameliorate the postoperative course. The aim of this study was to investigate the perioperative use of Ω3-FAs to reduce postoperative complications after liver surgery., Methods: Between July 2013 and July 2018, we carried out a multicentric, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial designed to test whether 2 single intravenous infusions of Omegaven® (Ω3-FAs) vs. placebo may decrease morbidity. The primary endpoints were postoperative complications by severity (Clavien-Dindo classification) integrated within the comprehensive complication index (CCI)., Results: A total of 261 patients (132 in the Omegaven and 129 in the placebo groups) from 3 centers were included in the trial. Most cases (87%, n = 227) underwent open liver surgery and 56% (n = 105) were major resections (≥3 segments). In an intention-to-treat analysis including the dropout cases, the mortality rate was 4% and 2% in the Omegaven and placebo groups (odds ratio0.40;95% CI 0.04-2.51; p = 0.447), respectively. Any complications and major complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3b) occurred in 46% vs. 43% (p = 0.709) and 12% vs. 10% (p = 0.69) in the Omegaven and placebo groups, respectively. The mean CCI was 17 (±23) vs.14 (±20) (p = 0.417). An analysis excluding the dropouts provided similar results., Conclusions: The routine perioperative use of 2 single doses of intravenous Ω3-FAs (100 ml Omegaven) cannot be recommended in patients undergoing liver surgery (Grade A recommendation)., Lay Summary: Despite strong evidence of omega-3 fatty acids having liver-directed, anti-inflammatory and pro-regenerative action in various rodent models, 2 single omega-3 fatty acid infusions given to patients before and during liver surgery failed to reduce complications. Scaura Schwarz is a small, widely distributed Neotropical genus of stingless bees whose workers and males have the metabasitarsus as broad as or wider than the metatibia. The genus currently includes four valid species. A species complex composed of three additional species are described here as new (S. amazonica sp. n., S. aspera sp. n. and S. cearensis sp. n.). In addition to the descriptions and redescriptions of the species of Scaura, an illustrated identification key is presented, as well as updated geographical records.

Obesity is a serious public health problem whose increase has been associated with the growing consumption of ultra-processed foods in several world regions, including Latin America. Food guides are official guidelines used to promote healthy eating habits and may serve as a tool to prevent obesity. Brazil was the first country to adopt the level of processing to categorize food items and make recommendations based on these categories in its food guides. Thus, the objective of the present article is to share the Brazilian experience with incorporating processed food recommendations as official guidelines and with the development of food guides. In the development of Brazilian food guides, the Ministry of Health emphasized a collective construction, with participation and discussion of contents by strategic stakeholders. The process was refined in the Food Guide for Brazilian Children below 2 Years of Age, with establishment of a management committee and a political monitoring committee, public call for participation by researchers and health care professionals, and input workshops with key stakeholders to define scope. The validation process relied on additional input workshops with key stakeholders, in addition to workshops held in all Brazilian states for debate and mobilization for online public consultation. The present article aims to describe and discuss the actions implemented from 2014 to 2018 at the federal level in the context of the Intersectoral Strategy to Prevent and Control Obesity issued by the Brazilian federal government. The goal of the Intersectoral Strategy is to prevent and control obesity based on six action plans: 1) availability and access to adequate and healthy foods; 2) education, communication, and information; 3) promotion of healthy lifestyles in specific environments/territories; 4) food and nutrition surveillance; 5) comprehensive care for individuals presenting obesity in the health care network; and 6) regulation and control of the quality and harmlessness of food. To gather information, semi-structured questionnaires were submitted to representatives from the ministries of Education, Health, Planning, Citizenship, and Agrarian Development. The actions implemented in the period were described in terms of the six action plans. Positive results were achieved through the shared management model adopted, even though many challenges still remain. The agenda for action proposed in the Intersectoral Strategy is attuned to the Brazilian context, and intersectoral management was still in place until the writing of the present article., Competing Interests: Conflitos de interesse. Xenarthrans-anteaters, sloths, and armadillos-have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n = 5,941), and Cyclopes sp. have the fewest (n = 240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n = 11,588), and the fewest data are recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n = 33). With regard to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n = 962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n = 12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become available very soon (i.e., Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans data set.
