Galaxy Zoo is an online project to classify morphological features in extra-galactic imaging surveys with public voting. In this paper, we compare the classifications made for two different surveys, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) imaging survey and a part of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), in the equatorial fields of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. Our aim is to cross-validate and compare the classifications based on different imaging quality and depth. We find that generally the voting agrees globally but with substantial scatter i.e. substantial differences for individual galaxies. There is a notable higher voting fraction in favor of ``smooth'' galaxies in the DESI+\rev{{\sc zoobot}} classifications, most likely due to the difference between imaging depth. DESI imaging is shallower and slightly lower resolution than KiDS and the Galaxy Zoo images do not reveal details such as disk features \rev{and thus are missed in the {\sc zoobot} training sample}. \rev{We check against expert visual classifications and find good agreement with KiDS-based Galaxy Zoo voting.} We reproduce the results from Porter-Temple+ (2022), on the dependence of stellar mass, star-formation, and specific star-formation on the number of spiral arms. This shows that once corrected for redshift, the DESI Galaxy Zoo and KiDS Galaxy Zoo classifications agree well on population properties. We measure the evolution of the rest-frame $NUV-V$ colors for early-type galaxies in clusters at $03$. The blue UV colors of early-type galaxies at low-intermediate redshifts are likely driven by this sub-population being enriched in helium up to $\sim44\%$. At $z>0.8$ (when the extra UV component has not yet appeared) the data allows us to constrain the star formation histories of galaxies by fitting models to the evolution of their UV colors: we find that the epoch at which the stellar populations formed ranges between $3

We measure the [${\alpha}$/Fe] abundances for 183 quiescent galaxies at z = 0.60 - 0.75 with stellar masses ranging 10.4 \leq log10 10.4 $\leq$ log10 (M$_*$ /M$_\odot$) $\leq$ 11.6 selected from the LEGA-C survey. We estimate [${\alpha}$/Fe] from the ratio of the spectral indices Mgb (${\lambda} \sim 5177$ {\AA}) and Fe4383, compared to predictions of simple stellar population models. We find that 91% of quiescents in our sample have supersolar [${\alpha}$/Fe], with an average value of [${\alpha}$/Fe] = +0.24 $\pm$ 0.01. We find no significant correlation between [${\alpha}$/Fe] and stellar metallicity, mass, velocity dispersion, and average formation time. Galaxies that formed the bulk of their stellar mass on time scales shorter than 1 Gyr follow the same [${\alpha}$/Fe] distribution as those which formed on longer time scales. In comparison to local early-type galaxies and to stacked spectra of quiescent galaxies at z = 0.38 and z = 0.07, we find that the average [${\alpha}$/Fe] has not changed between z = 0.75 and the present time. Our work shows that the vast majority of massive quiescent galaxies at z $\sim$ 0.7 are ${\alpha}$-enhanced, and that no detectable evolution of the average [${\alpha}$/Fe] has taken place over the last $\sim$ 6.5 Gyr., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, 1 appendix

We conduct a comparison of the merging galaxy populations detected by a sample of visual identification of tidal features around galaxies as well as spectroscopically-detected close pairs of galaxies to determine whether our method of selecting merging galaxies biases our understanding of galaxy interactions. Our volume-limited parent sample consists of 852 galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey in the redshift range $0.04 \leq z \leq 0.20$ and stellar mass range $9.50 \leq$ log$_{10}(M_{\star}/\rm{M}_{\odot})\leq 11.0$. We conduct our comparison using images from the Ultradeep layer of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) to visually-classify galaxies with tidal features and compare these to the galaxies in the GAMA spectroscopic close-pair sample. We identify 198 galaxies possessing tidal features, resulting in a tidal feature fraction $f_{\rm{tidal}}$ = 0.23 $\pm$ 0.02. We also identify 80 galaxies involved in close pairs, resulting in a close pair fraction $f_{\rm{pair}}$ = 0.09 $\pm$ 0.01. Upon comparison of our tidal feature and close pair samples we identify 42 galaxies that are present in both samples, yielding a fraction $f_{\rm{both}}$ = 0.05 $\pm$ 0.01. We find evidence to suggest that the sample of close pairs of galaxies is more likely to detect early-stage mergers, where two separate galaxies are still visible, and the tidal feature sample detects later-stage mergers, where only one galaxy nucleus remains visible. The overlap of the close pair and tidal feature samples likely detect intermediate-stage mergers. We explore the properties of galaxies in the proximity (within a $\sim$2 Mpc radius sphere) of Type I quasars at 0.1

We derived stellar ages and metallicities [Z/H] for $\sim$70 passive early type galaxies (ETGs) selected from VANDELS survey over the redshift range 1.0$<$$z$$<$1.4 and stellar mass range 10$<$log(M$_*$/M$_\odot$)$<$11.6. We find significant systematics in their estimates depending on models and wavelength ranges considered. Using the full-spectrum fitting technique, we find that both [Z/H] and age increase with mass as for local ETGs. Age and metallicity sensitive spectral indices independently confirm these trends. According to EMILES models, for 67 per cent of the galaxies we find [Z/H]$>$0.0, a percentage which rises to $\sim$90 per cent for log(M$_*$/M$_\odot$)$>$11 where the mean metallicity is [Z/H]=0.17$\pm$0.1. A comparison with homogeneous measurements at similar and lower redshift does not show any metallicity evolution over the redshift range 0.0$11.0 host stellar populations with [Z/H]>0.05, formed over short timescales ($\Delta{t50}$$<$1 Gyr) at early epochs (t$_{form}$$<$2 Gyr), implying high star formation rates (SFR$>$100 M$_\odot$/yr) in high mass density regions (log($\Sigma_{1kpc}$)$>$10 M$_\odot$/kpc$^2$). This sharp picture tends to blur at lower masses: log(M$_*$/M$_\odot$)$\sim$10.6 galaxies can host either old stars with [Z/H]$<$0.0 or younger stars with [Z/H]$>$0.0, depending on the duration ($\Delta{t50}$) of the SF. The relations between galaxy mass, age and metallicities are therefore largely set up ab initio as part of the galaxy formation process. In Galaxy And Mass Assembly Data Release 4 (GAMA DR4), we make available our full spectroscopic redshift sample. This includes 248682 galaxy spectra, and, in combination with earlier surveys, results in 330542 redshifts across five sky regions covering ~250deg^2. The redshift density, is the highest available over such a sustained area, has exceptionally high completeness (95 per cent to r_KIDS=19.65mag), and is well suited for the study of galaxy mergers, galaxy groups, and the low redshift (z<0.25) galaxy population. DR4 includes 32 value-added tables or Data Management Units (DMUs) that provide a number of measured and derived data products including GALEX, ESO KiDS, ESO VIKING, WISE and Herschel Space Observatory imaging. Within this release, we provide visual morphologies for 15330 galaxies to z<0.08, photometric redshift estimates for all 18million objects to r_KIDS~25mag, and stellar velocity dispersions for 111830 galaxies. We conclude by deriving the total galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) and its sub-division by morphological class (elliptical, compact-bulge and disc, diffuse-bulge and disc, and disc only). This extends our previous measurement of the total GSMF down to 10^6.75 M_sol h^-2_70 and we find a total stellar mass density of rho_*=(2.97+/-0.04)x10^8 M_sol h_70 Mpc^-3 or Omega_*=(2.17+/-0.03)x10^-3 h^-1_70. We conclude that at z<0.1, the Universe has converted 4.9+/-0.1 per cent of the baryonic mass implied by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis into stars that are gravitationally bound within the galaxy population., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Understanding the connection between nuclear activity and galaxy environment remains critical in constraining models of galaxy evolution. By exploiting extensive catalogued data from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, we identify a representative sample of 205 quasars at 0.1 < z < 0.35 and establish a comparison sample of galaxies, closely matched to the quasar sample in terms of both stellar mass and redshift. On scales <1 Mpc, the galaxy number counts and group membership of quasars appear entirely consistent with those of the matched galaxy sample. Despite this, we find that quasars are ~1.5 times more likely to be classified as the group center, indicating a potential link between quasar activity and cold gas flows or galaxy interactions associated with rich group environments. On scales of ~a few Mpc, the clustering strength of both samples are statistically consistent and beyond 10 Mpc we find no evidence that quasars trace large scale structures any more than the galaxy control sample. Both populations are found to prefer intermediate-density sheets and filaments to either very high- or very low- density environments. This weak dependence of quasar activity on galaxy environment supports a paradigm in which quasars represent a phase in the lifetime of all massive galaxies and in which secular processes and a group-centric location are the dominant trigger of quasars at low redshift., Comment: 26 pages, 20 figures, accepted to ApJ

Matter distribution models of the Milky Way galaxy are usually stationary, although there are known to be wave-like perturbations in the disc at $\sim10\%$ level of the total density. Modelling of the overall acceleration field by allowing non-equilibrium is a complicated task. We must learn to distinguish whether density enhancements are persistent or not by their nature. In the present paper, we elaborate our orbital arc method to include the effects of massless perturbations and non-stationarities in the modelling. The method is tested by modelling of simulation data and shown to be valid. We apply the method to the Gaia DR 2 data within a region of $\sim 0.5$ kpc from the Sun and confirm that acceleration field in the Solar Neighbourhood has a perturbed nature -- the phase space density along the orbits of stars grow in the order of $h\lesssim 5\%$ per Myr due to non-stationarity. This result is a temporally local value and can be used only within the timeframe of a few Myrs. An attempt to pinpoint the origin of the perturbation shows that the stars having larger absolute angular momentum are the main carriers of the local perturbation. As they are faster than the average thin disc star, they are either originating further away and are close in their pericentre or they are perturbed locally by a fast co-moving perturber, such as gas disc inhomogenities., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, resubmitted after addressing the referees comments

Galaxies can be classified as passive ellipticals or star-forming discs. Ellipticals dominate at the high end of the mass range, and therefore there must be a mechanism responsible for the quenching of star-forming galaxies. This could either be due to the secular processes linked to the mass and star formation of galaxies or to external processes linked to the surrounding environment. In this paper, we analytically model the processes that govern galaxy evolution and quantify their contribution. We have specifically studied the effects of mass quenching, gas stripping, and mergers on galaxy quenching. To achieve this, we first assumed a set of differential equations that describe the processes that shape galaxy evolution. We then modelled the parameters of these equations by maximising likelihood. These equations describe the evolution of galaxies individually, but the parameters of the equations are constrained by matching the extrapolated intermediate-redshift galaxies with the low-redshift galaxy population. In this study, we modelled the processes that change star formation and stellar mass in massive galaxies from the GAMA survey between z~0.4 and the present. We identified and quantified the contributions from mass quenching, gas stripping, and mergers to galaxy quenching. The quenching timescale is on average 1.2 Gyr and a closer look reveals support for the slow-then-rapid quenching scenario. The major merging rate of galaxies is about once per 10~Gyr, while the rate of ram pressure stripping is significantly higher. In galaxies with decreasing star formation, we show that star formation is lost to fast quenching mechanisms such as ram pressure stripping and is countered by mergers, at a rate of about 41% Gyr$^{-1}$ and to mass quenching 49% Gyr$^{-1}$. We explore the persistence of the alignment of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) with their local environment. We find that a significant fraction of BCGs do not coincide with the centroid of the X-ray gas distribution and/or show peculiar velocities (they are not at rest with respect to the cluster mean). Despite this, we find that BCGs are generally aligned with the cluster mass distribution even when they have significant offsets from the X-ray centre and significant peculiar velocities. The large offsets are not consistent with simple theoretical models. To account for these observations BCGs must undergo mergers preferentially along their major axis, the main infall direction. Such BCGs may be oscillating within the cluster potential after having been displaced by mergers or collisions, or the dark matter halo itself may not yet be relaxed., Comment: In press, MNRAS

To properly understand the evolution of high-redshift galaxy clusters, both passive and star-forming galaxies have to be considered. Here we study the clustering environment of 21 radio galaxies and quasars at 1 1.6, red overdensities at 1.2

The Blanco Dark Energy Camera (DECam) Bulge survey is a Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST) pathfinder imaging survey, spanning $\sim 200$ sq. deg. of the Southern Galactic bulge, $-2^\circ <$b$< -13^\circ$ and $-11^\circ <$l$ < +11^\circ$. We have employed the CTIO-4m telescope and the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to image a contiguous $\sim 200$ sq. deg. region of the relatively less reddened Southern Galactic bulge, in SDSS $u$ + Pan-STARRS$grizy$. Optical photometry with its large colour baseline will be used to investigate the age and metallicity distributions of the major structures of the bulge. Included in the survey footprint are 26 globular clusters imaged in all passbands. Over much of the bulge, we have Gaia DR2 matching astrometry to $i\sim 18$, deep enough to reach the faint end of the red clump. This paper provides the background, scientific case, and description of the survey. We present an array of new reddening-corrected colour-magnitude diagrams that span the extent of Southern Galactic bulge. We argue that a population of massive stars in the blue loop evolutionary phase, proposed to lie in the bulge, are instead at $\sim 2$ kpc from the Sun and likely red clump giants in the old disk. A bright red clump near $(l,b)=(+8^\circ,-4^\circ)$ may be a feature in the foreground disk, or related to the long bar reported in earlier work. A galaxy moving through a background of dark matter particles, induces an overdensity of these particles or a wake behind it. The back reaction of this wake on the galaxy is a force field that can be decomposed into an effective deceleration (called dynamical friction) and a tidal field. In this paper we determine the tidal forces, thus generated on the galaxy, and the resulting observables, which are shown to be warps, lopsidedness and/or kinematic-photometric position angle misalignments. We estimate the magnitude of the tidal-like effects needed to reproduce the observed warp and lopsidedness on the isolated galaxy IC 2487. Within a realistic range of dark matter distribution properties the observed warped and lopsided kinematical properties of IC 2487 is possible to reproduce (the background medium of dark matter particles has a velocity dispersion of $\lesssim 80\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ and the density $10^4-10^5~{\rm M_\odot\,kpc^{-3}}$, more likely at the lower end). We conclude that the proposed mechanism can generate warps, lopsidedness and misalignments observed in isolated galaxies or galaxies in loose groups. Contradictory results have been reported on the time evolution of the alignment between clusters and their Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG). We study this topic by analyzing cosmological hydro-simulations of 24 massive clusters with $M_{200}|_{z=0} \gtrsim 10^{15}\, M_\odot$, plus 5 less massive with $1 \times 10^{14} \lesssim M_{200}|_{z=0} \lesssim 7 \times 10^{14}\, M_\odot$, which have already proven to produce realistic BCG masses. We compute the BCG alignment with both the distribution of cluster galaxies and the dark matter (DM) halo. At redshift $z=0$, the major axes of the simulated BCGs and their host cluster galaxy distributions are aligned on average within 20$^\circ$. The BCG alignment with the DM halo is even tighter. The alignment persists up to $z\lesssim2$ with no evident evolution. This result continues, although with a weaker signal, when considering the projected alignment. The cluster alignment with the surrounding distribution of matter ($3R_{200}$) is already in place at $z\sim4$ with a typical angle of $35^\circ$, before the BCG-Cluster alignment develops. The BCG turns out to be also aligned with the same matter distribution, albeit always to a lesser extent. These results taken together might imply that the BCG-Cluster alignment occurs in an outside-in fashion. Depending on their frequency and geometry, mergers can promote, destroy or weaken the alignments. Clusters that do not experience recent major mergers are typically more relaxed and aligned with their BCG. In turn, accretions closer to the cluster elongation axis tend to improve the alignment as opposed to accretions closer to the cluster minor axis., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. MNRAS accepted. Radial velocities of 2768 fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) toward the Southern Galactic bulge are presented, spanning the southern bulge from -8 < l < +8 and -3 < b <-6. Distances derived from the pulsation properties of the RRLs are combined with Gaia proper motions to give constraints on the orbital motions of 1389 RRLs. The majority (~75%) of the bulge RRLs have orbits consistent with these stars being permanently bound to <3.5 kpc from the Galactic Center, similar to the bar. However, unlike the bulge giants, the RRLs exhibit slower rotation and a higher velocity dispersion. The higher velocity dispersion arises almost exclusively from halo interlopers passing through the inner Galaxy. We present 82 stars with space velocities > 500 km/s and find that the majority of these high-velocity stars are halo interlopers; it is unclear if a sub-sample of these stars with similar space velocities have a common origin. Once the 25% of the sample represented by halo interlopers is cleaned, we can clearly discern two populations of bulge RRLs in the inner Galaxy. One population of RRLs is not as tightly bound to the Galaxy (but is still confined to the inner ~3.5 kpc), and is both spatially and kinematically consistent with the barred bulge. The second population is more centrally concentrated and does not trace the bar. One possible interpretation is that this population was born prior to bar formation, as its spatial location, kinematics and pulsation properties suggest, possibly from an accretion event at high redshift., Comment: accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We explore the dependence of UV upturn colours in early type cluster galaxies on the properties of their parent clusters (such as velocity dispersion and X-ray luminosity) and on the positions and kinematics of galaxies within them. We use a sample of 24 nearby clusters with highly complete spectroscopy and optical/infrared data to select a suitable sample of red sequence galaxies, whose FUV and NUV magnitudes we measure from archival GALEX data. Our results show that the UV upturn colour has no dependence on cluster properties and has the same range in all clusters. There is also no dependence on the projected position within clusters or on line-of-sight velocity. Therefore, our conclusion is that the UV upturn phenomenon is an intrinsic feature of cluster early type galaxies, irrespective of their cluster environment., Comment: 8 pages. We derive NUV luminosity functions for 6471 NUV detected galaxies in 28 $0.02 < z < 0.08$ clusters and consider their dependence on cluster properties. We consider optically red and blue galaxies and explore how their NUV LFs vary in several cluster subsamples, selected to best show the influence of environment. Our composite LF is well fit by the Schechter form with $M^*_{NUV}=-18.98 \pm 0.07$ and $\alpha=-1.87 \pm 0.03$ in good agreement with values for the Coma centre and the Shapley supercluster, but with a steeper slope and brighter $L^*$ than in Virgo. The steep slope is due to the contribution of massive quiescent galaxies that are faint in the NUV. There are significant differences in the NUV LFs for clusters having low and high X-ray luminosities and for sparse and dense clusters, though none are particularly well fitted by the Schechter form, making a physical interpretation of the parameters difficult. When splitting clusters into two subsamples by X-ray luminosity, the ratio of low to high NUV luminosity galaxies is higher in the high X-ray luminosity subsample (i.e the luminosity function is steeper across the sampled luminosity range). In subsamples split by surface density, when characterised by Schechter functions the dense clusters have an $M^*$ about a magnitude fainter than that of the sparse clusters and $\alpha$ is steeper ($-1.9$ vs. $-1.6$ respectively). The differences in the data appear to be driven by changes in the LF of blue (star-forming) galaxies. We have analysed the strength of the UV upturn in red sequence galaxies with luminosities reaching to below the $L^*$ point within four clusters at $z$ = 0.3, 0.55 \& 0.7. We find that the incidence and strength of the upturn remains constant up to $z=0.55$. In comparison, the prevalence and strength of the UV upturn is significantly diminished in the $z=0.7$ cluster, implying that the stellar population responsible for the upturn in a typical red sequence galaxy is only just developing at this redshift and is essentially fully-developed by $\sim 1$ Gyr later. Of all the mainstream models that seek to explain the UV upturn phenomenon, it is those that generate the upturn through the presence of a Helium-enhanced stellar subpopulation on the (hot) horizontal branch that are most consistent with this behaviour. The epoch ($z=0.7$) where the stars responsible for the upturn first evolve from the red giant branch places constraints on their age and chemical abundances. By comparing our results with the prediction made by the YEPS Helium-enhanced spectrophotometic models, we find that a solar metallicity sub-population that displays a consistent upturn between $0

We have measured the strength of the UV upturn for red sequence galaxies in the Abell~1689 cluster at $z=0.18$, reaching to or below the $L^*$ level and therefore probing the general evolution of the upturn phenomenon. We find that the range of UV upturn strengths in the population as a whole has not declined over the past 2.2 Gyrs. This is consistent with a model where hot horizontal branch stars, produced by a Helium-enriched population, provide the required UV flux. Based on local counterparts, this interpretation of the result implies Helium abundances of at least 1.5 times the primordial value for this HB population, along with high formation and assembly redshifts for the galaxies and at least a subset of their stellar populations., Comment: MNRAS, in press

Using a sample of 472 local Universe (z<0.06) galaxies in the stellar mass range 10.25 < log M*/M_sun < 10.75, we explore the variation in galaxy structure as a function of morphology and galaxy colour. Our sample of galaxies is sub-divided into red, green and blue colour groups and into elliptical and non-elliptical (disk-type) morphologies. Using KiDS and VIKING derived postage stamp images, a group of eight volunteers visually classified bars, rings, morphological lenses, tidal streams, shells and signs of merger activity for all systems. We find a significant surplus of rings ($2.3\sigma$) and lenses ($2.9\sigma$) in disk-type galaxies as they transition across the green valley. Combined, this implies a joint ring/lens green valley surplus significance of $3.3\sigma$ relative to equivalent disk-types within either the blue cloud or the red sequence. We recover a bar fraction of ~44% which remains flat with colour, however, we find that the presence of a bar acts to modulate the incidence of rings and (to a lesser extent) lenses, with rings in barred disk-type galaxies more common by ~20-30 percentage points relative to their unbarred counterparts, regardless of colour. Additionally, green valley disk-type galaxies with a bar exhibit a significant $3.0\sigma$ surplus of lenses relative to their blue/red analogues. The existence of such structures rules out violent transformative events as the primary end-of-life evolutionary mechanism, with a more passive scenario the favoured candidate for the majority of galaxies rapidly transitioning across the green valley., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Galaxy clusters play a crucial role in constraining cosmological parameters. Cluster detection and characterization have therefore become an important field of modern cosmology. In this work, we aim at constructing reasonably representative composite luminosity function of cluster members in the WISE survey that can be used in the future as an input in matching algorithms for cluster detection. We use a sample of massive clusters from the redMaPPer catalog to match the positions of the WISE sources. We build the composite luminosity function of the WISE members in different redshift bins. We find that galaxy cluster members have a characteristic composite luminosity function, with a clear change in the slope at a given magnitude apparent $M^{*}$, which becomes fainter with increasing redshift. The best-fit bright-end slope $\beta$ is compatible with a constant value of $3.54$ with no clear trend with redshift, while the faint-end slope $\alpha$ is remarkably different, ranging from $2$ to $3$. A galaxy's orientation is one of its most basic observable properties. Astronomers once assumed that galaxies are randomly oriented in space, however it is now clear that some have preferred orientations with respect to their surroundings. Chief among these are giant elliptical galaxies found in the centers of rich galaxy clusters. Numerous studies have shown that the major axes of these galaxies often share the same orientation as the surrounding matter distribution on larger scales. Using Hubble Space Telescope observations of 65 distant galaxy clusters, we show for the first time that similar alignments are seen at earlier epochs when the universe was only one-third its current age. These results suggest that the brightest galaxies in clusters are the product of a special formation history, one influenced by development of the cosmic web over billions of years., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures. We present F775W-F850LP (rest-frame UV-U) and F850LP-F160W (rest-frame U-R) colour gradients for a sample of 17 elliptical galaxies morphologically selected in the cluster XMMU J2235.3-2557 at $z$=1.39. We detected significant negative (redder inwards) U-R colour gradients in $\sim$70 per cent of the galaxies and flat gradients for the remaining ones. On the other hand, the UV-U gradients are significant positive (bluer inwards) for $\sim$80 per cent of the galaxies and flat for the remaining ones. Using stellar population synthesis models, we found that the behaviour of the two colour gradients cannot be simultaneously explained by a radial variation of age, metallicity and/or dust. The observed U-R gradients are consistent with a metallicity gradient (mean value $\nabla_{Z} =-0.4$) in agreement with the one observed in the local elliptical galaxies. The positive UV-U gradients cannot be explained with age or metallicity variations and imply an excess of UV emission towards the galaxies' central regions.This excess calls into question mechanisms able to efficiently produce UV emission. The data require either steady weak star formation (< 1 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) or an He-rich population in the cores of these galaxies in order to simultaneously reproduce both the colour gradients. On the contrary, the presence of a QSO cannot account for the observed UV excess on its own. Galaxies arrive on the red sequences of clusters at high redshift ($z>1$) once their star formation is quenched and evolve passively thereafter. However, we have previously found that cluster red sequence galaxies (CRSGs) undergo significant morphological evolution subsequent to the cessation of star formation, at some point in the past 9-10~Gyr. Through a detailed study of a large sample of cluster red sequence galaxies spanning $0.2

We evaluate the dry merger activity in the Coma cluster, using a spectroscopically complete sample of 70 red-sequence (RS) galaxies, most of which (~75%) are located within 0.2R200 (~0.5 Mpc) from the cluster center, with data from the Coma Treasury Survey obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The fraction of close galaxy pairs in the sample is the proxy employed for the estimation of the merger activity. We identify 5 pairs and 1 triplet, enclosing a total of 13 galaxies, based on limits on projected separation and line-of-sight velocity difference. Of these systems, none show signs of ongoing interaction, and therefore we do not find any true mergers in our sample. This negative result sets a 1{\sigma} upper limit of 1.5% per Gyr for the major dry merger rate, consistent with the low rates expected in present-day clusters. Detailed examination of the images of all the RS galaxies in the sample reveals only one with low surface brightness features identifiable as the remnant of a past merger or interaction, implying a post-merger fraction below 2%., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We present the GAMA Panchromatic Data Release (PDR) constituting over 230deg$^2$ of imaging with photometry in 21 bands extending from the far-UV to the far-IR. These data complement our spectroscopic campaign of over 300k galaxies, and are compiled from observations with a variety of facilities including: GALEX, SDSS, VISTA, WISE, and Herschel, with the GAMA regions currently being surveyed by VST and scheduled for observations by ASKAP. These data are processed to a common astrometric solution, from which photometry is derived for 221,373 galaxies with r<19.8 mag. Online tools are provided to access and download data cutouts, or the full mosaics of the GAMA regions in each band. We focus, in particular, on the reduction and analysis of the VISTA VIKING data, and compare to earlier datasets (i.e., 2MASS and UKIDSS) before combining the data and examining its integrity. Having derived the 21-band photometric catalogue we proceed to fit the data using the energy balance code MAGPHYS. These measurements are then used to obtain the first fully empirical measurement of the 0.1-500$\mu$m energy output of the Universe. Exploring the Cosmic Spectral Energy Distribution (CSED) across three time-intervals (0.3-1.1Gyr, 1.1-1.8~Gyr and 1.8---2.4~Gyr), we find that the Universe is currently generating $(1.5 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{35}$ h$_{70}$ W Mpc$^{-3}$, down from $(2.5 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{35}$ h$_{70}$ W Mpc$^{-3}$ 2.3~Gyr ago. More importantly, we identify significant and smooth evolution in the integrated photon escape fraction at all wavelengths, with the UV escape fraction increasing from 27(18)% at z=0.18 in NUV(FUV) to 34(23)% at z=0.06. The GAMA PDR will allow for detailed studies of the energy production and outputs of individual systems, sub-populations, and representative galaxy samples at $z<0.5$. The merger of two spiral galaxies is believed to be one of the main channels for the production of elliptical and early-type galaxies. In the process, the system becomes an (ultra) luminous infrared galaxy, or (U)LIRG, that morphs to a quasar, to a K+A galaxy, and finally to an early-type galaxy. The time scales for this metamorphosis are only loosely constrained by observations. In particular, the K+A phase should follow immediately after the QSO phase during which the dust and gas remaining from the (U)LIRG phase are expelled by the AGN. An intermediate class of QSOs with K+A spectral signatures, the post-starburst QSOs or PSQ, may represent the transitional phase between QSOs and K+As. We have compiled a sample of 72 {bona fide} $z<0.5$ PSQ from the SDSS DR7 QSO catalogue. We find the intermediate age populations in this sample to be on average significantly weaker and metal poorer than their putative descendants, the K+A galaxies. The typical spectral energy distribution of PSQ is well fitted by three components: starlight; an obscured power-law; and a hot dust component required to reproduce the mid-IR fluxes. From the slope and bolometric luminosity of the power-law component we estimate typical masses and accretion rates of the AGN, but we find little evidence of powerful radio-loud or strong X-ray emitters in our sample. This may indicate that the power-law component originates in a nuclear starburst rather than in an AGN, as expected if the bulk of their young stars are still being formed, or that the AGN is still heavily enshrouded in dust and gas. We find that both alternatives are problematic and that more and better optical, X-ray, and mm-wave observations are needed to elucidate the evolutionary history of PSQ., Comment: A&A accepted

We report on the RR Lyrae variable star, MACHO 176.18833.411, located toward the Galactic bulge and observed within the data from the ongoing Bulge RR Lyrae Radial Velocity Assay (BRAVA-RR), which has the unusual radial velocity of -372 +- 8 km/s and true space velocity of -482 +- 22 km/s relative to the Galactic rest frame. Located less than 1 kpc from the Galactic center and toward a field at (l,b)=(3,-2.5), this pulsating star has properties suggesting it belongs to the bulge RR Lyrae star population yet a velocity indicating it is abnormal, at least with respect to bulge giants and red clump stars. We show that this star is most likely a halo interloper and therefore suggest that halo contamination is not insignificant when studying metal-poor stars found within the bulge area, even for stars within 1 kpc of the Galactic center. We discuss the possibility that MACHO 176.18833.411 is on the extreme edge of the bulge RR Lyrae radial velocity distribution, and also consider a more exotic scenario in which it is a runaway star moving through the Galaxy., Comment: accepted to ApJ Letters

We use the HB morphology of 48 Galactic GCs to study the radial distributions of the different stellar populations known to exist in globular clusters. Assuming that the (extremely) blue HB stars correspond to stars enriched in Helium and light elements, we compare the radial distributions of stars selected according to colour on the HB to trace the distribution of the secondary stellar populations in globular clusters. Unlike other cases, our data show that the populations are well mixed in 80% of the cases studied. This provides some constraints on the mechanisms proposed to pollute the interstellar medium in young globular clusters., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. We use our Galactic Globular Cluster Catalog (G2C2) photometry for 111 Galactic globular clusters (GC) in g and z, as well as r and i photometry for a subset of 60 GCs and u photometry for 22 GCs, to determine the structural parameters assuming King (1962) models. In general, the resulting core radii are in good comparison with the current literature values. However, our half-light radii are slightly lower than the literature. The concentrations (and therefore also the tidal radii) are poorly constrained mostly because of the limited radial extent of our imaging. Therefore, we extensively discuss the effects of a limited field-of-view on the derived parameters using mosaicked SDSS data, which do not suffer from this restriction. We also illustrate how red giant branch (RGB) stars in cluster cores can stochastically induce artificial peaks in the surface brightness profiles. The issues related to these bright stars are scrutinised based on both our photometry and simulated clusters. We also examine colour gradients and find that the strongest central colour gradients are caused by central RGB stars and thus not representative for the cluster light or colour distribution. We recover the known relation between the half-light radius and the Galactocentric distance in the g-band, but find a lower slope for redder filters. We did not find a correlation between the scatter on this relation and other cluster properties. We find tentative evidence for a correlation between the half-light radii and the [Fe/H], with metal-poor GCs being larger than metal-rich GCs. However, we conclude that this trend is caused by the position of the clusters in the Galaxy, with metal-rich clusters being more centrally located., Comment: 17 pages, 23 figures, 3 tables. In a previous paper we compared the SEDs of a sample of 808 K+A galaxies from the FUV to the MIR to the predictions of the spectrum synthesis models explicitly using AGB components. Here we use the new AGB-light models from C. Maraston (including less fuel for the later stages of stellar evolution and improved calibrations) to address the discrepancies between our observations and the AGB-heavy models used in our previous paper, which over-predict the infrared fluxes of post-starburst galaxies by an order of magnitude. The new models yield a much better fit to the data, especially in the near-IR, compared to previous realizations where AGB stars caused a large excess in the H and K bands. We { also compare the predictions of the M2013 models to those with BC03 and find that both reproduce the observations equally well. } We still find a significant discrepancy with { both sets of models} in the Y and J bands, which however is probably due to the spectral features of AGB stars. We also find that { both the M2013 and the BC03 models} still over-predict the observed fluxes in the UV bands, even invoking extinction laws that are stronger in these bands. While there may be some simple explanations for this discrepancy, we find that further progress requires new observations and better modelling. Excess mid-infrared emission longward of 5$\mu$m is well modelled by a $T_{dust}=300^oK$ Black-Body, which may arise from dust emission from the circumstellar envelopes of Oxygen rich M stars (expected for a metal-rich population of AGB stars)., Comment: A&A accepted

We derive the close pair fractions and volume merger rates as a function of luminosity and morphology for galaxies in the GAMA survey with -23 < M(r) < -17 at 0.01 < z < 0.22. The merger fraction is about 0.015 at all luminosities (assuming 1/2 of pairs merge) and the volume merger rate is about 0.00035 per cubic Mpc per Gyr. Dry mergers (between red or spheroidal galaxies) are uncommon and decrease with decreasing luminosity. Fainter mergers are wet, between blue or disky galaxies. Damp mergers (one of each type) follow the average of dry and wet mergers. In the brighter luminosity bin (-23 < M(r) < -20) the merger rate evolution is flat, irrespective of colour or morphology. The makeup of the merging population does not change since z = 0.2. Major mergers and dry mergers appear comparatively unimportant in the buildup of the red sequence over the past 2 Gyr. We compare the colour, morphology, environmental density and degree of activity of galaxies in pairs to those of more isolated objects in the same volume. Galaxies in close pairs tend to be both redder and slightly more spheroid-dominated. This may be due to "harassment" in multiple previous passes prior to the current interaction. Galaxy pairs do not appear to prefer significantly denser environments. We consider the morphology, stellar populations, structure and AGN activity of 10 post-starburst (K+A) galaxies with HST observations, full spectral coverage in the optical, spectral energy distributions from 0.2 to 160 $\mu$m, X-ray and radio data. Our results show that the PSG phenomenon is related to mergers and interactions, and that star formation was likely triggered during close passes prior to final coalescence. We performed a detailed qualitative analysis of the observed light distribution, including low-surface brightness tidal features and color profiles, in high-resolution multi-band imaging with HST. We find evidence that star formation was centrally concentrated and that quenching took place from the inside-out, consistent with the occurrence of a feedback episode. Most of our PSGs contain massive bulges and therefore should host supermassive black holes. We search for AGN activity in spectra (line ratios), optical variability, X-ray emission at 0.5--7.0 KeV and radio emission at 20cm: all four lines of evidence show there is no active AGN accreting at more than 0.1\% of the Eddington luminosity. We conclude that mergers may be a necessary, but not a sufficient condition, for AGN activity and that they are not likely to be important in our objects. We present $g^\prime$ and $z^\prime$ aperture photometry for 96 Galactic Globular Clusters, making this the largest homogeneous catalog of photometry for these objects in the SDSS filter system. For a subset of 56 clusters we also provide photometry in $r^\prime$ and $i^\prime$. We carry out comparisons with previous photometry as well as with the SDSS dataset. The data will be useful for a series of applications in Galactic and extragalactic astrophysics. Future papers will analyse the colour-metallicity relation, colour-magnitude diagrams, and structural parameters. We use our integrated SDSS photometry for 96 globular clusters in $g$ and $z$, as well as $r$ and $i$ photometry for a subset of 56 clusters, to derive the integrated colour-metallicity relation (CMR) for Galactic globular clusters. We compare this relation to previous work, including extragalactic clusters, and examine the influence of age, present-day mass function variations, structural parameters and the morphology of the horizontal branch on the relation. Moreover, we scrutinise the scatter introduced by foreground extinction (including differential reddening) and show that the scatter in the colour-metallicity relation can be significantly reduced combining two reddening laws from the literature. In all CMRs we find some low-reddening young GCs that are offset to the CMR. Most of these outliers are associated with the Sagittarius system. Simulations show that this is due less to age than to a different enrichment history. Finally, we introduce colour-metallicity relations based on the infrared Calcium triplet, which are clearly non-linear when compared to $(g^\prime-i^\prime)$ and $(g^\prime-z^\prime)$ colours., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages, 18 figures

We present new X-ray and optical spectra of the old nova CP Pup (nova Pup 1942) obtained with Chandra and the CTIO 4m telescope. The X-ray spectrum reveals a multi-temperature optically thin plasma reaching a maximum temperature of 36$^{+19}_{-16}$ keV absorbed by local complex neutral material. The time resolved optical spectroscopy confirms the presence of the $\sim$1.47 hr period, with cycle-to-cycle amplitude changes, as well as of an additional long term modulation which is suggestive either of a longer period or of non-Keplerian velocities in the emission line regions. These new observational facts add further support to CP Pup as a magnetic cataclysmic variable (mCV). We compare the mCV and the non-mCV scenarios and while we cannot conclude whether CP Pup is a long period system, all observational evidences point at an intermediate polar (IP) type CV., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS. 10 pages and 5 figures

We present radial velocities and chemical abundance ratios of [Fe/H], [O/Fe], [Si/Fe], and [Ca/Fe] for 264 red giant branch (RGB) stars in three Galactic bulge off-axis fields located near (l,b)=(-5.5,-7), (-4,-9), and (+8.5,+9). The results are based on equivalent width and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution (R~18,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N~75-300) spectra obtained with the Hydra spectrographs on the Blanco 4m and WIYN 3.5m telescopes. The targets were selected from the blue side of the giant branch to avoid cool stars that would be strongly affected by CN and TiO; however, a comparison of the color-metallicity distribution in literature samples suggests our selection of bluer targets should not present a significant bias against metal-rich stars. We find a full range in metallicity that spans [Fe/H]\approx-1.5 to +0.5, and that, in accordance with the previously observed minor-axis vertical metallicity gradient, the median [Fe/H] also declines with increasing Galactic latitude in off-axis fields. The off-axis vertical [Fe/H] gradient in the southern bulge is estimated to be ~0.4 dex/kpc. The (+8.5,+9) field exhibits a higher than expected metallicity, with a median [Fe/H]=-0.23, that might be related to a stronger presence of the X--shaped bulge structure along that line-of-sight. All fields exhibit an identical, strong decrease in velocity dispersion with increasing metallicity that is consistent with observations in similar minor-axis outer bulge fields. Additionally, the [O/Fe], [Si/Fe], and [Ca/Fe] versus [Fe/H] trends are identical among our three fields, and are in good agreement with past bulge studies. The RR Lyrae instability strip (IS) in NGC 1851 is investigated, and a model is presented which reproduces the pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae population. In our model, a stellar component within the IS that displays minor helium variations (Y~0.248-0.270) is able to reproduce the observed periods and amplitudes of the RR Lyrae variables, as well as the frequency of fundamental and first-overtone RR Lyrae variables. The RR Lyrae variables therefore may belong to an He-enriched second generation of stars. The RR Lyrae variables with a slightly enhanced helium (Y~0.270-0.280) have longer periods at a given amplitude, as is seen with Oosterhoff II (OoII) RR Lyrae variables, whereas the RR Lyrae variables with Y~0.248-0.270 have shorter periods, exhibiting properties of Oosterhoff I (OoI) variables., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. We use the pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster NGC 1851 to obtain detailed constraints of the various sub-stellar populations present along its horizontal branch. On the basis of detailed synthetic horizontal branch modeling, we find that minor helium variations (Y~0.248-0.280) are able to reproduce the observed periods and amplitudes of the RR Lyrae variables, as well as the frequency of fundamental and first-overtone RR Lyrae stars. Comparison of number ratios amongst the blue and red horizontal branch components and the two observed subgiant branches also suggest that the RR Lyrae variables originated from the progeny of the bright subgiant branch. The RR Lyrae variables with a slightly enhanced helium (Y~0.270-0.280) have longer periods at a given amplitude, as is seen with Oosterhoff II (OoII) RR Lyrae variables, whereas the RR Lyrae variables with Y~0.248-0.270 have shorter periods, exhibiting properties of Oosterhoff I (OoI) variables. This correlation does suggest that the pulsational properties of RR Lyrae stars can be very useful for tracing the various sub-populations and can provide suitable constraints on the multiple population phenomenon. We present new radial velocity measurements from the Bulge Radial Velocity Assay (BRAVA), a large scale spectroscopic survey of M-type giants in the Galactic bulge/bar region. The sample of ~4500 new radial velocities, mostly in the region -10 deg < l < +10 deg and b ~ -6 deg more than doubles the existent published data set. Our new data extend our rotation curve and velocity dispersion profile to +20 deg, which is ~2.8 kpc from the Galactic Center. The new data confirm the cylindrical rotation observed at -6 deg and -8 deg, and are an excellent fit to the Shen et al. (2010) N-body bar model. We measure the strength of the TiO molecular band as a first step towards a metallicity ranking of the stellar sample, from which we confirm the presence of a vertical abundance gradient. Our survey finds no strong evidence of previously unknown kinematic streams. We derive the stacked 1.4 GHz flux from FIRST (Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters) survey for 811 K+A galaxies selected from the SDSS DR7. For these objects we find a mean flux density of $56\pm 9$ $\mu$Jy. A similar stack of radio-quiet white dwarfs yields an upper limit of 43 $\mu$Jy at a 5$\sigma$ significance to the flux in blank regions of the sky. This implies an average star formation rate of 1.6 $\pm$ 0.3 M$_{\odot}$ year$^{-1}$ for K+A galaxies. However the majority of the signal comes from $\sim$4% of K+A fields that have aperture fluxes above the $5\sigma$ noise level of the FIRST survey. A stack of the remaining galaxies shows little residual flux consistent with an upper limit on star formation of 1.3 M$_{\odot}$ year$^{-1}$. Even for a subset of 456 `young' (spectral ages $<$ 250 Myr) K+A galaxies we find that the stacked 1.4 GHz flux is consistent with no current star formation. Our data suggest that the original starburst has been terminated in the majority of K+A galaxies, but that this may represent part of a duty cycle where a fraction of these galaxies may be active at a given moment with dusty starbursts and AGNs being present., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

NGC 2808 is a unique globular cluster with not only a bimodal-horizontal branch (HB) but also with gaps on the blue horizontal branch. Adequate interpretation of the nature of the detected peculiarities in "bimodal" and "gap" clusters is of paramount importance for understanding the nature of the second parameter phenomenon and scenarios for the formation of the Galaxy. Although RR Lyrae variables are HB stars that can provide powerful constraints to models on the origin of bimodal HBs, unfortunately, until recently, only one RR Lyrae variable was known in this cluster. Here we present the first calibrated time-series CCD photometry for newly discovered fundamental mode RR Lyrae variables in NGC 2808, with observations over a range of twenty years. Investigations of RR Lyrae variable stars in this peculiar, bimodal-horizontal branch globular cluster are carried out to account for its formation, and the effects of helium enrichment and differential reddening. The Oosterhoff classification of NGC$\,$2808, which has recently been associated with a previously unknown dwarf galaxy in Canis Major, is also discussed., Comment: To appear in the Carnegie Observatories Astrophysics Series, Volume 5

We have used the AAOMEGA spectrograph to obtain R $\sim 1500$ spectra of 714 stars that are members of two red clumps in the Plaut Window Galactic bulge field $(l,b)=0^{\circ},-8^{\circ}$. We discern no difference between the clump populations based on radial velocities or abundances measured from the Mg$b$ index. The velocity dispersion has a strong trend with Mg$b$-index metallicity, in the sense of a declining velocity dispersion at higher metallicity. We also find a strong trend in mean radial velocity with abundance. Our red clump sample shows distinctly different kinematics for stars with [Fe/H] $<-1$, which may plausibly be attributable to a minority classical bulge or inner halo population. The transition between the two groups is smooth. The chemo-dynamical properties of our sample are reminiscent of those of the Milky Way globular cluster system. If correct, this argues for no bulge/halo dichotomy and a relatively rapid star formation history. The degree of influence that environment and mass have on the stellar populations of early-type galaxies is uncertain. In this paper we present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of the stellar populations of early-type galaxies aimed at addressing this question. The sample of galaxies is drawn from four clusters, with =0.04, and their surrounding structure extending to ~10R_{vir}. We find that the distributions of the absorption-line strengths and the stellar population parameters age, metallicity and alpha-element abundance ratio do not differ significantly between the clusters and their outskirts, but the tight correlations found between these quantities and velocity dispersion within the clusters are weaker in their outskirts. All three stellar population parameters of cluster galaxies are positively correlated with velocity dispersion. Galaxies in clusters form a homogeneous class of objects that have similar distributions of line-strengths and stellar population parameters, and follow similar scaling relations regardless of cluster richness or morphology. We estimate the intrinsic scatter of the Gaussian distribution of metallicities to be 0.3 dex, while that of the alpha-element abundance ratio is 0.07 dex. The e-folding time of the exponential distribution of galaxy ages is estimated to be 900 Myr. The intrinsic scatters of the metallicity and alpha-element abundance ratio distributions can almost entirely be accounted for by the correlations with velocity dispersion and the intrinsic scatter about these relations. We present period change rates (dP/dt) for 42 RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster IC$\,$4499. Despite clear evidence of these period increases or decreases, the observed period change rates are an order of magnitude larger than predicted from theoretical models of this cluster. We find there is a preference for increasing periods, a phenomenon observed in most RR Lyrae stars in Milky Way globular clusters. The period-change rates as a function of position in the period-amplitude plane are used to examine possible evolutionary effects in OoI clusters, OoII clusters, field RR Lyrae stars and the mixed-population cluster $\omega$~ Centauri. It is found that there is no correlation between the period change rate and the typical definition of Oosterhoff groups. If the RR Lyrae period changes correspond with evolutionary effects, this would be in contrast to the hypothesis that RR Lyrae variables in OoII systems are evolved HB stars that spent their ZAHB phase on the blue side of the instability strip. We present a deep and wide $I$ luminosity function for galaxies in Abell 1689 ($z=0.183$) from a mosaic of HST WFPC2 images covering $10'$ on the side. The main result of this work is the detection of a steep upturn in the dwarf galaxy LF, with $\alpha \sim -2$. The dwarf to giant ratio appears to increase outwards, but this is because giant galaxies are missing in the cluster outskirts, indicating luminosity segregation. The red sequence LF has the same parameters, within errors, as the total LF, showing that the faint end upturn consists of red quiescent galaxies. We speculate that the upturn is connected to the `filling-in' of the red sequence at $z < 0.4$ and may represent the latest installment of `downsizing' as the least massive galaxies are being quenched at the present epoch., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters
