3. Dairy cooperatives at the crossroads.

- Abstract
Purpose – The business environment of the EU dairy sector has altered drastically because of changes in EU agricultural and trade policy, consumer demand, and innovations since the turn of the millennium. This created new market income opportunities for dairy processors, but also fostered the necessity for investments to access these markets. A literature review sees cooperatives to be disadvantaged at this point, because their organisational structure hinders their access to external financial resources. Confronted with these equity constraints, the purpose of this paper is to investigate how German dairy marketing cooperatives adapted to the new business environment and have been performing from 2000 to 2012. Design/methodology/approach – An approach combining descriptive data from public sources and financial ratio analysis was used to test hypotheses, derived from Transaction Cost Theory. Findings – Contrary to assumptions, cooperatives gained market shares on the German dairy market. However, dairy cooperatives managed to overcome the internal equity constraints only partially via mergers, which intensified structural change. Focusing on cost leadership, German cooperatives were not able to successfully diversify their product portfolio and still operate mainly in the fluid, low margins dairy market segments. Frustrated by their diminishing influence on the decision making process in the vastly grown cooperatives, a majority of farmers cancelled their cooperative membership. Practical implications – Until today an absolute turning point for the cooperative organisational form has not yet occurred, but if cooperatives do not find the means to invest more heavily in the new markets, a slow decline of cooperatives is expected. Originality/value – The paper contributes to the existing literature on marketing cooperatives by providing insights on the performance of cooperatives through combination of from theory derived assumptions with qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. This research aims to examine the characteristics, requirements, benefits, barriers and applicability of various collaborative relationships. Research papers from various sources have been perused as secondary source of data. From these papers, a conceptual framework of various collaborative strategies has been developed. Three types of collaborative approaches (collaborative transaction management; collaborative event management; and collaborative process management) are proposed. The three collaborative approaches are compared and contrasted. Benefits and limitations associated with each type of collaboration are discussed. Managers can use these approaches to assess current collaborations and seek ways to improve current collaborative efforts. Managers can also use the approaches to develop collaborative strategies across a broad spectrum of relationships in order to determine which type of collaboration best its each individual business relationship. This research extends previous relationship typologies by focusing speciacally on collaborative relationships. The research examines various types of collaborative relationships in order to categorize collaborative approaches in a manner useful to academicians and practitioners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Co-operative marketing groups are common in tourism, particularly in the case of destination marketing. Destination tourism marketing groups offer a diverse range of tourism products and experiences which complement each other and are delineated by a specific geographical parameter. Tourism product marketing groups offer similar tourism products or services and through a co-operative approach focus on an identified target markets. Co-operative marketing can make greater impact in terms of market presence and can be more cost effective. Members need to see the value in their membership in order to remain involved. Many tourism product providers are SMTE’s (Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises) and as tourism is recognised as a fragmented business, peripherality may play a role in isolating some providers. Co-operative marketing and evolving relationships can help to create a common group identity and a sense of belonging. Socio cultural issues, evaluation of product vision, perceived value as well as many of the constructs associated with the concepts of co-operative marketing, networking and relationship marketing, are explored with a view to understanding a more effective and efficient method of product marketing.

In 1994 Milk Marketing Boards in the UK were disbanded, their role as milk purchasers was taken by more than 100 licensed organisations. It is shown that this change resulted in an increase in the variation between producers' milk price. The majority of dairy farmers sold milk through the Milk Marketing Boards designated successor; a farmer owned co-operative called Milk Marque. In doing so they accepted a 1.5 ppl milk price penalty. It is shown farmers who adopted this strategy did so because of the perceived financial security of Milk Marque, goodwill and support for the principle of co-operative marketing and in an attempt to protect the milk price over the longer-term. The marketing environment changed once again in 2000 when Milk Marque was disbanded. Deductions drawn from the analyses of farmers' behaviour following the 1994 deregulation are used to inform consideration of possible developments in the marketing of milk in England and Wales.
