Bonaventura Vulcanius traduttore della Catena in IoannemThe codex Leiden, Universiteitsbibliotheek, ms. Vulc. 9 contains teaching speeches and Greek-into-Latin translations by Bonaventura Vulcanius (1538-1614). Among these materials, the Latin translation of the first chapters of a Catena in Ioannem is an important source for studying Vulcanius as a translator. This paper aims to provide the critical edition of Vulcanius’ trans- lation with the Greek text according to the codex Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, ms. gr. 209, which is identified as the source of the Greek model used by Vulcanius for his translation.

Housman used to say criticus nascitur, non fit. He borrowed the motto from Ruhnken’s Elogium of Hemsterhuys and reused it in his famous essay The Application of Thought, just as he borrowed from the same Elogium the two key qualities for a critic, ἀγχίνοια and εὐστοχία, in the preface of his Manilius. Therefore, it is not by chance that Nisbet called Eustochia the “Muse of Textual Conjecture”, nor that Pasquali said that a palaeographer nascitur et fit.

[ES] El objetivo del trabajo es mostrar un debate filológico sobre una variante del texto de Ovidio (Ov. Ep. XIII, 43). Nos centraremos tanto en las sugerencias que aparecen en la correspondencia, como en las anotaciones de las ediciones de varios filólogos. En estas fuentes, se desvela la comparación en materia de crítica textual griega y latina. Finalmente, contextualizaremos estos datos en el marco de unas discusiones sobre un pasaje de Lucano. [EN] The aim of the work is to show a philological debate on a variant of Ovid’s text (Ov. Ep. XIII, 43). We will focus both on the suggestions that appear in the correspondence and on the annotations of the editions of several philologists. In this cultural context, the comparison in matters of Greek and Latin textual criticism is revealed. Finally, we will explain these comments in the frame of some discussions about a Lucan’s verse.

This dissertation examines the central forms of exegetical authority in early to early medieval China, focusing on the reception history of the Zuo Tradition from Western Han to Western Jin (2nd c. BCE-3rd c. CE). Most modern scholarly works treat the Zuo Tradition as a historical narrative of great literary value about China's Spring and Autumn period (722-468 BCE). My research, however, studies the value and status of this text as an exegetical tradition from the perspective of classicists spanning five centuries. These early scholars on the Zuo Tradition measured its worth according to how well it preserved and explicated the visions of Confucius as lodged in the wording of Annals the Classic. Conceptions about the Zuo Tradition evolved through a series of debates and arguments in expository letters, memorials, and essays, as well as commentaries on the Annals and Zuo Tradition. During the Western Han (206 BCE-9 CE), the Shiji advanced the conception of the Zuo Tradition as a corrective to the divergent interpretations of the Annals. In late Western Han, Liu Xin (46 BCE-23 CE) vied to establish the Zuo Tradition on equal footing with officially sponsored exegetical traditions. But during early Eastern Han (25-220 CE), the Fan Sheng (fl. 28 CE) versus Chen Yuan (fl. 28 CE) debate showed that doubts remained about the authority of the text as an interpretation of Confucius' messages. Implicitly responding to such doubts, Ban Gu's (32-92) writings elaborated on previous accounts about the authorship, transmission, and official precedence of the Zuo Tradition. During the mid-Eastern Han, Jia Kui (30-101) represented the Zuo Tradition as a source of legitimization for the imperial house, while other scholars added to the myths about the Zuo Tradition. The Western Jin (265-317) scholar Du Yu (222-284) worked to further shore up the text's authority by both redefining conceptions about the Annals and privileging the Zuo Tradition as an exclusive system of interpretation of the Classic. In the period under study, successive generations of Zuo Tradition scholars made steps to secure its status in a range of ways, all of them aiming to strengthen the text's relationship to the Classic. These incremental steps enabled the Zuo Tradition to attain definitive authority in the early Tang (7th c. CE), allowing us to observe a process fraught with conflicting ideas about the text. Thus the study of this historical process helps to merge the intellectual horizons of modern scholars with those of classicists.

This chapter shows the relevance of Carlo Sigionio’s reconstruction of Roman colonial practices for the history and theory of settler colonialism. It discusses how Sigonio’s analysis of Roman colonization as a vehicle of social emancipation implicitly criticized Venetian colonial strategies in the Eastern Mediterranean, and sketches its impact on European visions of overseas colonialism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, highlighting English and Dutch examples of settler colonialism between Batavia (Jakarta) and Savannah, Georgia. For Sigonio, the Roman colony could be characterized as a well-ordered agrarian landscape concerned with protecting the property claims and political rights of a clearly defined community of citizen–farmers. With his detailed study of Roman colonial law and practice, Sigonio showed that there was a historical foundation for settler colonialism to work effectively. His reconstruction of the Roman settler colony made it possible to conceive of a colonial utopia as a concrete colonial practice.

Thomas Mann and the historian of the Late Empire Otto Seeck corresponded from 1911 until at least 1917. While all of Seeck’s letters to Mann appear to have been lost, there are five surviving letters from Mann to Seeck, four of which are being published here for the first time. Between 1911 and 1917, Mann generally professed conservative political ideas, and during the First World War he enthusiastically supported his country’s war efforts. A similar conservative and nationalistic trait can be found in Seeck’s popularising works at the time. Thus, before Mann turned to a republican allegiance, he had had an affinity with Seeck, and mentioned the writing of his conservative essay "Betrachtungen eines Un­politischen" in two letters to him. On 24 January 1911, Mann thanked Seeck for his hospitality on a visit to Münster and sent an autograph for one of Seeck’s daughters. In a letter dated 9 April 1916, Mann outlined the qualities and weak­nesses of his own essay on Frederick the Great, mentioned its reception among scholars and the wider public, and gave his opinion on historical fiction. On 16 February 1917, he thanked Seeck for sending him one of his essays, and, just over a month later (24 March 1917), for sending him a new essay, and men­tioned his own forthcoming book, "Aufzeichnungen eines Unpolitischen" (not yet entitled "Betrachtungen").

International audience; Résumé du congrès : Hermeneutics of Sources in Renaissance Antiquarianism In Renaissance antiquarian studies, the source began to take on a central role in the entire intellectual system and became the key aspect to consider when searching for knowledge about the past, thereby exerting an influence on the hermeneutical approach. Beyond specific objects of study, antiquarian techniques generally converged on a dual scheme to approach sources, which included a cataloguing phase and an interpretative phase. Many records had to be compiled (both directly and indirectly) to create a solid foundation; the records were then divided into different categories and studied in a multidisciplinary perspective. The aim of this session is to unveil ramifications of this cultural pathway, which influenced the way the past was interpreted between the fourteenth and seventeenth century. Focus will be devoted to the explanation of its methodology, strongly linked to the perception of time, which contributed shaping a renewed historical consciousness. This article offers the first comprehensive investigation of the history of scholarship related to epigraphic forgeries. Fake inscriptions were already produced in Antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages, but their number began to rise dramatically from the Renaissance onwards. By the mid-1500s, scholars became attentive of the risks of using fake sources for antiquarian purposes, while in the 17th and 18th centuries they started isolating forged or suspect texts within specific sections of their new epigraphic corpora. Tentative sets of criteria for isolating non-genuine inscriptions were first identified by Scipione Maffei around 1720, but an actual epistemology for epigraphic criticism was only developed by Theodor Mommsen and his collaborators in the mid-1800s. Since then, most corpora and critical editions have, often implicitly, followed their scientific principles. Current scholars should be well aware of them, because they can present both considerable rewards and serious shortcomings.

Avec le dépouillement du contenu érudit des cinq livres De Asse et partibus eius (1515 ; septième éd., 1541), qui s’ajoutent à celui des quelque vingt mille citations formant les Commentarii linguæ Græcæ (1529 ; éd. définitive, 1548), il est possible d’enrichir sensiblement la liste de livres de la bibliothèque intellectuelle de Guillaume Budé (1468-1540), dont une partie seulement est matériellement identifiée. Il en ressort un vaste tableau, certes à mettre à jour dès que le contenu des deux éditions d’Annotationes in Pandectas (1508 et 1526 ; éd. définitive, 1535) sera précisément connu, mais signalant déjà Budé comme un lecteur aussi vorace qu’encyclopédique, bon connaisseur des classiques mais surtout grand explorateur des textes ardus des grammairiens, des théologiens, des juristes, des agronomes et d’autres auteurs dits techniques. Thanks to the counting of the contents of the five books De Asse and partibus eius (1515; seventh edition, 1541), which are added to some twenty-thousand quotations forming the Commentarii linguæ Græcæ (1529; final edition, 1548), it is now possible to substantially enrich the list of Guillaume Budé’s (1468-1540) intellectual library, only a part of which is physically identified. It turns out to be a vast array, certainly to be better known later, when the contents of the two editions of Annotationes in Pandectas (1508 and 1526; final edition, 1535) will be fully studied, but already signaling Budé as a reader as voracious as encyclopedic, a good connoisseur of the classics, but above all a great explorer of the difficult texts of grammarians, theologians, jurists, agronomists and other authors, the so-called technici.

This article presents 27 hitherto unpublished letters (1951-1977) sent by one of the foremost classicists of the 20th century, Harold F. Cherniss (1904-1987), to Mario Untersteiner (1899-1981). Such a a wide, complete, and chronologically extended collection of letters casts light on personal relationships inside the community of classical scholarship in the central decades of the 20th century, but also provides valuable clues on personality features, research and methodo­­logy. The Paduan scholar Lorenzo Pignoria, in a letter to his friend Francesco Pola (July 1st, 1615), put in an ordered list several ancient rare texts discovered by Italian humanists in the XIV and XV centuries, someway anticipating the achievements of later scholars (e.g. Remigio Sabbadini, whose researches partly concerned the same subject). The paper discusses this valuable example of early-modern scholarship and provides an annotated edition of the letter., FuturoClassico FCl, No 2 (2016)

Discussions of classical scholarship and of the Anglican church in Victorian England have both at times identified an ‘age of the Greek-play bishop’ during which there was a close relationship between classical distinction and episcopal promotion. Closer investigation reveals few prelates fitting the description. This article explains this paradox by tracing the idea of the ‘Greek-play bishop’ across a variety of nineteenth-century literatures, in the process suggesting the significance more generally of the migration of ideas between overlapping Victorian print cultures. The article demonstrates how the concept originated in the radical critique of Old Corruption around 1830, before in the 1840s and 1850s satirists (notably Sydney Smith) adopted it in ad personam assaults on two bishops, J. H. Monk and C. J. Blomfield. In the 1860s, the concept became a less polemical category in the context of more wide-ranging analyses of the composition of the episcopate, gradually acquiring an elegiac aspect as new intellectual challenges arose to Victorian Christianity. By 1900, the ‘Greek-play bishop’ had begun to find the place in the conceptual armoury of historians of the nineteenth-century church that it would hold for much of the twentieth century, its polemical origins long forgotten.
