Simple Summary: Canine hip dysplasia is a painful condition common in large dog breeds, leading to joint instability and osteoarthritis. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for guiding breeding decisions to help reduce its prevalence. However, evaluating hip health status can be challenging, as minor positioning changes during X-rays can distort images and hinder proper hip joint assessment. In this study, we developed an artificial intelligence tool for the automatic evaluation of pelvic alignment in X-rays. By detecting subtle asymmetries in bone structure, the tool determines whether a dog's hips are properly aligned. Our findings showed that the artificial intelligence tool performed as accurately as an expert human examiner in detecting misalignment. This automated approach could improve the reliability of canine hip dysplasia screenings, saving veterinarians time and reducing misdiagnosis risks due to human error. Ultimately, this technology has the potential to enhance medical care for dogs and support breeders in making more informed choices, contributing to canine health improvements and reducing canine hip dysplasia incidence in future generations. This study aimed to assess the association between pelvic rotation and asymmetry in obturator foramina areas (AOFAs) and to develop a computer vision model for automated AOFA measurement. In the first part, 203 radiographs were analyzed to examine the relationship between pelvic rotation, assessed through asymmetry in iliac wing and obturator foramina widths (AOFWs), and AOFAs. A significant association was found between pelvic rotation and AOFA, with AOFW showing a stronger correlation (R2 = 0.92, p < 0.01). AOFW rotation values were categorized into minimal (n = 71), moderate (n = 41), marked (n = 37), and extreme (n = 54) groups, corresponding to mean AOFA ± standard deviation values of 33.28 ± 27.25, 54.73 ± 27.98, 85.85 ± 41.31, and 160.68 ± 64.20 mm2, respectively. ANOVA and post hoc testing confirmed significant differences in AOFA across these groups (p < 0.01). In part two, the dataset was expanded to 312 images to develop the automated AOFA model, with 80% allocated for training, 10% for validation, and 10% for testing. On the 32 test images, the model achieved high segmentation accuracy (Dice score = 0.96; Intersection over Union = 0.93), closely aligning with examiner measurements. Paired t-tests indicated no significant differences between the examiner and model's outputs (p > 0.05), though the Bland–Altman analysis identified occasional discrepancies. The model demonstrated excellent reliability (ICC = 0.99) with a standard error of 17.18 mm2. A threshold of 50.46 mm2 enabled effective differentiation between acceptable and excessive pelvic rotation. Abstract Background Canine hip dysplasia is a common orthopedic disease in veterinary practice. The diagnosis is made by radiographic examinations that evaluate bone alterations associated with hip dysplasia. Although radiographic examination is the gold standard for diagnosis, it does not allow a detailed evaluation of soft tissues such as the joint capsule and periarticular muscles. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of B-mode ultrasonography and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography in assessing the joint capsule and periarticular muscles of dogs using the Orthopedic Foundation of Animals (OFA) classification and the distraction index (DI) in the early and late diagnosis of hip dysplasia. This study sought to propose a protocol for the ultrasonographic evaluation of the structures involved in canine hip dysplasia. Methods Radiographic and ultrasonographic evaluations were performed on 108 hip joints of 54 dogs. Thirty dogs were older than 2 years and 24 were aged between 4 and 10 months. Results It was verified that an increase in pectineus muscle stiffness (cutoff value > 2.77 m/s) by elastography in some dysplastic dogs and an increase in the thickness of the joint capsule (cutoff value > 0.9 mm) in B-mode ultrasonography, were associated with a distraction index > 0.5, with both having a positive correlation. In B-mode ultrasonographic evaluation, the presence of signs of degenerative joint disease, such as irregularities of the cranial edge of the acetabulum and femoral head, were associated with a distraction index > 0.5 in canines, with a specificity of 94%. In adult dogs, the findings of degenerative joint disease on ultrasound were associated with a diseased OFA classification (P 1.10 mm was diagnostic for dysplasia in unhealthy dogs by OFA. Conclusions ARFI elastography has shown that the pectineus muscle may experience changes in stiffness in dysplastic animals. Additionally, changes in joint capsule thickness can be identified in B-mode in young and adult dogs with dysplastic joints, which contributes to the diagnosis of hip dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a global disease and an improved diagnostic approach to this orthopedic condition is needed, with an emphasis on inexpensive and minimally invasive techniques. This research aimed to determine the differentiating potential of selected biochemical markers in serum between healthy dogs and dogs with hip dysplasia in a breed-specific study that involved the Tornjak dog population. ANIMALS 99 Tornjak dogs radiographically categorized (Federation Cynologique Internationale procedure and scoring scheme) between December 2019 and April 2021, as having no sign of hip dysplasia or near normal hip joints (nondysplastic group; n = 51) vs mild, moderate, or severe hip dysplasia (dysplastic group; 48). METHODS Serum concentrations and enzyme activity of the biochemical markers hyaluronic acid (HA), procollagen II C-terminal propeptide (PIICP), and metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) were compared among adult dogs with or without radiographic hip dysplasia. Statistical tests used to examine the differentiating potential of biochemical markers in Tornjak dog groups were assessed using the Mann–Whitney U test, logistic regression, and receiving operating characteristics (ROC) analysis. RESULTS Tornjak dogs with radiographic CHD had significantly lower serum concentrations of HA and higher concentrations of PIICP and MMP9 activity compared to dogs with radiographically normal hips (P < .05). Selected biochemical markers could distinguish dogs with radiographic CHD from those without CHD with high sensitivity and specificity. A study was conducted to assess the prevalence of canine hip dysplasia (CHD) among dog population during a period of one year from January 2021 to December 2021. Canine hip dysplasia was confirmed by clinical orthopedic and radiographic examinations. Of the 231 dogs presented with lameness suspected to be originating from hip joint, 140 animals had dysplastic hips. The incidence was more in large breeds of dogs in an age group of 6 months to 12 months. Thirty five percent of the animals showed unilateral affection while in the remaining 65 percent it was bilateral. Females were more affected with this condition as per the findings of this study. Other than hip dysplasia, traumatic hip dislocation and osteoarthritis contributed to lameness originating from hip joints.

Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a progressive and disabling disorder in large dog breeds, such as the German Shepherd dog. Breeding sires and dams free of dysplasia is the only way to reduce its incidence. Several diagnostic methods have been developed based on radiographic examination, on the basis of which dogs are selected for breeding. CHD has a polygenic hereditary basis and environmental influence, with a median to low heritability (ca. 0,20 to 0,40), so the progress in phenotypic selection has been slow. In Argentina, the prevalence of dysplasia in German Shepherd dogs remains high (> 25%) and it is impossible to predict its incidence in the offspring of the breeding stock. Some countries have implemented a selection based on the estimated breeding value, obtaining an important advance. Genome-wide association studies have revealed numerous CHD-associated markers and several candidate genes have been found that point to the possibility of implementing genomic selection in the near future.

The main objective of this work was to describe a femoral neck thickness index to quantify femoral neck width and to study its association with the degree of canine hip dysplasia using the Fédération Cynologique Internationale scoring scheme. A total of 53 dogs (106 hips) were randomly selected for this study. Two examiners performed femoral neck thickness index estimation to study intra- and inter-examiner reliability and agreement. Statistical analysis tests showed excellent agreement and reliability between the measurements of the two examiners and the examiners' sessions. All joints were scored in five categories by an experienced examiner according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale criteria, and the results from examiner 1 were compared between these categories. The comparison of mean femoral neck thickness index between hip dysplasia categories using the analysis of variance test showed significant differences between groups. These results show that femoral neck thickness index is a parameter capable of evaluating proximal femur bone modeling and that it has the potential to enrich conventional canine hip dysplasia scoring criteria if incorporated into a computer-aided diagnosis software. Background and Aim: Passive hip laxity (PHL) is considered the primary risk factor for canine hip dysplasia (HD) and is estimated, in stress hip radiographs, using the distraction index (DI). The study aimed to associate the early PHL using the hip Distractor of University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (DisUTAD) and the late HD grades. Materials and Methods: A total of 41 dogs (82 hips) were submitted to a follow-up study. First, between 4 and 12 months of age, dogs were radiographed using the DisUTAD hip distractor and were determined the DI for each hip joint. Then, after 12 months of age, dogs were reevaluated for HD using the conventional hip ventrodorsal projection and hips were evaluated for HD using the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) scoring system. Results: Hips of dogs' in the second examination with FCI grades of A (n=28), B (n=11), C (n=22), and D and E (n=21) had an early DI of 0.32±0.1, 0.38±0.08, 0.50±0.12, and 0.64±0.11, respectively. Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a common orthopedic disease. Owing to the importance of CHD in affected dogs, both clinically and for their use in breeding or work, increasing attention is being given to early diagnosis. Therefore, early clinical and radiological examination of young animals is increasingly in demand, whereas common CHD screening according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) is usually performed at the age of 12 months or even older in Europe. One way to objectively evaluate gait pattern is to measure the ground reaction forces (GRFs) and center of pressure (COP). In this study, we used a pressure plate to evaluate the GRF and COP parameters for 32 Labrador Retrievers and 17 Golden Retrievers at 4, 8, and 12 months of age. The dogs also underwent radiological examination of the hip joints following the FCI rules at the age of at least 12 months, which were grouped as sound (FCI grade A or B) and diseased (FCI grade C or worse). The results revealed significantly higher COP values in both breeds in the diseased limb groups at any measurement point during walking, with the most pronounced results obtained at 8 months of age. Furthermore, COP values during walking were significantly higher at 4 months than at 8 and 12 months in both the sound and diseased limb groups, indicating an increased stability of the gait pattern. Except for COP-Speed, the values of all COP parameters were higher during walking than during trotting at 4 months of age (i.e., COP-Speed was higher when trotting), indicating that the 4-beat gait in walk is more difficult to control for puppies than the 2-beat gait in trot. Overall, our results support the early evaluation of CHD in growing animals using non-invasive methods.

The present paper is a bibliographical research on canine hip dysplasia using imaging and molecular genetics techniques. Ever since the first description in 1935 made by Schnelle, canine hip dysplasia has remained one of the most diagnosed orthopedic conditions present in the dog breeds. The gold standard method of diagnosis of hip dysplasia is the radiological examination in hip-extended position. While the radiological examination focuses mainly on the individual for the diagnosis of this condition, methods of diagnosis of an entire population are sought, and these methods are represented by molecular genetics techniques. Naming the etiology of canine hip dysplasia and finding out the latest methods of genetically and radiologically diagnosis of canine hip dysplasia and the best alternatives of treatment for this disease. Canine hip dysplasia continues to be a major problem for owners, breeders and veterinarians. Currently, there are five standardized systems worldwide that deal with the grading of canine hip dysplasia. In addition to digital radiology, CT and ultrasonographic examination are feasible diagnosis methods. Even if the standard method of diagnosis remains the radiological examination in the present, the near future provides to be of the molecular genetic techniques.

Simple Summary: Canine hip dysplasia is an important orthopedic disorder in veterinary medicine. In addition to body weight, fat intake, rapid growth, and hormonal changes, heredity is one of its underlying factors. Diagnosis of hip dysplasia under one year of age would help veterinarians to plan proper preventive/therapeutic methods and exclude dysplastic dogs from breeding programs to reduce the incidence of the disease in future generations. Therefore, having an accurate method for the early diagnosis of dysplastic dogs is an important subject, and a limited number of screening methods are used globally. Assessment of the accuracy of these methods can be examined with intra- and inter-observer studies. In this study, we aimed to assess the inter-observer agreements of the eight radiographic parameters from four different radiographic projections between five experienced observers (two of them certified scrutineers for canine hip dysplasia) to evaluate the reproducibility of the protocols. In our study, high inter-observer agreements were recorded for measurable values such as angle measurements, whereas the results of the subjective grading were low. Thus, it can be deduced that quantitative parameters are reliable values and a combination of these values with other screening programs such as clinical examinations might increase the accuracy of the examinations. The goal of our study was to assess the inter-observer reliability of eight radiographic parameters in four-month-old Rottweilers. Radiographs of the 28 Rottweilers were investigated by five experienced observers. The radiographs were taken in ventrodorsal view with extended legs, frog-leg ventrodorsal view, distraction view, and dorsal acetabular rim view. Four quantitative parameters such as Norberg angle (NA), distraction index (DI), dorsal acetabular rim slope (DARS), and center edge angle (CEA) and four qualitative parameters such as sclerosis of the cranial acetabular rim (SCAR), location of the center of the femoral head (LCFH), grading of the degenerative joint disease (GDJD), and grading of the dorsal acetabular rim (GDAR) were evaluated. High inter-observer agreements were recorded for quantitative values, whereas the inter-observer agreement of the qualitative parameters was low. It can be deduced that the evaluated quantitative parameters are reliable, and a combination of these methods with clinical examinations might increase the accuracy of the examinations. Canine hip dysplasia is characterized by joint instability, subluxation, or even luxation of the femoral head, which causes a deformation of the joint with the early production of coxarthrosis. The main purpose of the paper was to determine the incidence of canine hip dysplasia from October 2019 until June 2021 in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Cluj-Napoca. A total of 173 X-rays on the canine hips were taken between October 2019 and June 2021 in the Radiology Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine from Cluj-Napoca. X-rays were taken with the Roentgen TEMCO Grx machine, then imported into the RadiAnt DICOM™ program, and interpreted according to the FCI grading scheme. A total number of 88 X-rays were excluded due to different causes, thus our study presents 85 X-ray images of the hip from different breeds of dogs. From a total of 85 dogs presented in this study, 38 dogs were graded A, 10 dogs were graded B, 22 dogs were classified with grade C, with grade D were classified 6 dogs and with grade E were diagnosed 9 dogs. ABSTRACT: Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a common condition observed in the surgical clinics for small animals. Among the surgical techniques for management of CHD, triple pelvic osteotomy and sacroiliac wedge promote acetabular lateral axial rotation (ventroversion), increasing acetabular coverage and joint stability. The present study aimed to evaluate radiographically, by measuring the Norberg angle (NA) and the acetabular coverage percentage (ACP), the acetabular ventroversion induced by the sacroiliac wedge technique, with or without pelvic osteotomies; we also checked the feasibility of wedges made of polyamide with an angulation of 20° and 30°. The software used to measure NA and ACP was AutoCAD® 2009. Pelves from 10 canine corpses were evaluated radiographically at four time-points: M0 (Control Group), M1 (wedges of 20° and 30°), M2 and M3 (wedges associated with bilateral pubis and ischium osteotomies, respectively). There was no significant increase in the acetabular ventroversion at M1, M2, and M3. The polyamide sacroiliac wedge technique proved to be feasible, stable, and easy to apply. Further, the software proved to be efficient and easy to use for NA and ACP measurements. In the present study, even in the cases of non-dysplasic adult canine corpses, it was concluded that the sacroiliac wedge technique does not require to be accompanied by pubis and ischial osteotomies because they did not significantly increase the NA and ACP.

Hip dysplasia (HD) is an important hereditary orthopedic disease in the dog associated with osteoarthritis and inadequate welfare for affected animals. The radiographic ventrodorsal hip extended (VDHE) view is used worldwide to select the better animals for breeding. This view normally is performed with manual restraining of the dog to obtain radiographs with acceptable technical quality. The veterinarian exposition to ionizing radiation is inevitable. In this study, the technical quality of VDHE radiographs and hip measurements was compared in 65 dogs radiographed twice, one with the common veterinarian manual restraining and the other obtained using a hind limb holder device, without the veterinarian within the X-ray room. The variables studied were pelvic tilting, patella displacement index, Norberg angle (NA), and subluxation hip category. The results showed a random distribution of right and left pelvic tilting, patella lateral or medial displacement, and hip subluxation categories in both samples (P > 0.05). The holder device positioning showed a better pelvic symmetry (P < 0.05) and a similar patellar displacement (P > 0.05). The mean ± standard deviation of NA was 101.1° ± 6.2° and 100.9° ± 6.1° in the manual and holder device hind limb restraining, respectively (P > 0.05), and the lower limit of 95% confidence interval of intraclass correlation coefficient was >0.75. These results showed statistical reproducibility of NA measurements by the hind limb holder device, and the examiner was protected from exposure to ionizing radiation within the X-ray room.

The present paper is a bibliographical research on canine hip dysplasia using imaging and molecular genetics techniques. Ever since the first description in 1935 made by Schnelle, canine hip dysplasia has remained one of the most diagnosed orthopedic conditions present in the dog breeds. The gold standard method of diagnosis of hip dysplasia is the radiological examination in hip-extended position. While the radiological examination focuses mainly on the individual for the diagnosis of this condition, methods of diagnosis of an entire population are sought, and these methods are represented by molecular genetics techniques. Naming the etiology of canine hip dysplasia and finding out the latest methods of genetically and radiologically diagnosis of canine hip dysplasia and the best alternatives of treatment for this disease. Canine hip dysplasia continues to be a major problem for owners, breeders and veterinarians. Currently, there are five standardized systems worldwide that deal with the grading of canine hip dysplasia. In addition to digital radiology, CT and ultrasonographic examination are feasible diagnosis methods. The aim of this study was to investigate the variability of the slope of the pelvis in different dog breeds and the correlation between pelvic slope and femoral subluxation. The sacrum–pelvis angle (SPA), the angulation between the sacrum and the axis of the ilium was created to represent the differences in the slope of the pelvis on lateral pelvic radiographs. The Norberg angle (NA) was used to quantify the femoral subluxation on hip-extended radiographs. Archived standard ventrodorsal hip radiographs and lateral lumbosacral radiographs of the same dogs were retrieved and a single observer measured the SPA and the NA in each case. A total of 180 dogs from six different breeds were sampled. The SPA varied between 40° and 71.5° and the NA between 71.2° and 113.9°. The findings indicated that there are significant individual and interbreed variations in the slope of the pelvis. Aim: To develop a new cephalometric measurement to evaluate the sagittal relationship between the maxilla and mandible. Material and Methods: Seventy-five pretreatment lateral cephalograms (25 each of Class I, II, and III) were subdivided based on ANB, Wits appraisal, and Beta angle into skeletal Class I, II, and III. The same cephalograms were again classified into skeletal Class I, II, and III based purely on Beta angle. The new measurement is based on the landmarks S, M (midpoint of the anterior maxilla), and G (center at the bottom of the symphysis), which form the YEN angle measured at M. Results: The mean and standard deviation for the YEN angle were calculated in all three skeletal groups. After using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Newman Keuls test, receiver-operating characteristic curves were obtained for the YEN angle in both types of classifications. The results showed that a patient with a YEN angle from 117 to 123 degrees could be considered to have a Class I skeletal relationship. Conclusions: The YEN angle was developed to assess more reliably the sagittal relationship between both jaws. Subjects with a YEN angle between 117 and 123 degrees have a skeletal Class I pattern. With an angle less than 117 degrees, patients are considered to have a skeletal Class II relationship, and with an angle greater than 123 degrees, patients have a skeletal Class III. Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a genetic disease, modulated by epigenetic and environmental factors. To decrease the prevalence of CHD, the hip joints of many pure breed dogs are radiographed to identify dysplastic dogs not qualified for breeding. It has been shown that both, prevalence and severity of CHD may be reduced on the basis of phenotypic i.e., radiographic selection of breeding animals. The method has been used in many countries for over 50 years. In the present study, severity and prevalence of CHD in five common large breeds in Switzerland were evaluated since 1995. Both, prevalence and severity of CHD dropped in each breed between the periods 1995–1999 and 2010–2016. The prevalence decreased in Golden Retrievers from 25 to 9% and in Labrador Retrievers from 16 to 3%, respectively. In the Flat-Coated Retriever, prevalence in general was low, decreasing from 6 to 3%. In the Bernese mountain dog and the German shepherd dog, a decrease from 21 to 12% and from 46 to 18%, respectively, was observed. However, the rather low overall rate of radiographed dogs (Retrievers: 11 to 18%, Bernese Mountain dogs: 23% and German Shepherd dogs: 31%) does not allow to draw reliable conclusions regarding the true prevalence of CHD for the entire population of these breeds in Switzerland.

OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of 3 walkway cover types on temporospatial and ground reaction force measurements of dogs during gait analysis with a pressure-sensitive walkway (PSW). ANIMALS 35 client- and staff-owned dogs (25 nonlame and 10 lame). PROCEDURES In a crossover study design, all dogs were evaluated at a comfortable walk on a PSW to which 3 cover types (a 0.32-cm-thick corrugated vinyl mat or a 0.32- o r 0.64-cm-thick polyvinyl chloride yoga mat) were applied in random order. Temporospatial and ground reaction force measurements were obtained and compared among cover types within the nonlame and lame dog groups. RESULTS Several variables, including maximum peak pressure, maximum force (absolute and normalized as a percentage of body weight), and vertical impulse (absolute and normalized) differed significantly in most comparisons among cover types for both nonlame and lame dogs. There was no significant difference in maximum force values between the 0.32-cm-thick corrugated vinyl and 0.64-cm-thick polyvinyl chloride cover types fo r both nonlame and lame dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE To the authors' knowledge, the cover type used during data collection with a PSW is rarely provided in published reports on this topic. The findings in this study suggested that to ensure that PSW data for dogs are collected in a standardized manner, the same cover type should be used during followup visits to evaluate clinical outcomes, fo r the duration of research studies, and at all locations for multi-institutional studies. Canine hip dysplasia is a multifactorial disorder characterized by hip laxity and osteoarthritis. The early diagnosis of hip laxity is an important topic in small animal orthopedics. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between clinical orthopedic examinations and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) scoring method. Thirty purebred Rottweilers were examined at approximately four (20 ± 2 weeks), eight (35 ± 2 weeks), and twelve months of age (54 ± 1 weeks), respectively. The Ortolani, Barlow, and Bardens tests and reduction/subluxation angle measurements were performed at each time. FCI scoring was conducted at the third examination time. Positive correlations were recorded between the reduction angle and Ortolani test, reduction angle and FCI score, and Ortolani test and FCI score for the second and third examination dates. No correlation was observed between the subluxation angle and other methods. Despite previous studies reporting 16–20 weeks as the earliest age for diagnosing hip laxity in dogs, in our study, early diagnosis was possible from the age of 35 ± 2 weeks. This difference might originate from the small sample size, low number of the dogs with severe grades of laxity, and breed differences.

Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a common disease representing an important problem for many dog breeds worldwide. The screening for CHD and breeding programs have been ongoing for many decades but the incidence of disease have failed to be reduced to the expected level. The early diagnosis of CHD is paramount in order to facilitate the early management strategies and to prevent the breeding of the affected individuals. Generally in this area, the emphasis is placed on the radiographic evaluation process, however this is partly a subjective process suggested to be influenced by the experience of the observers. This study was designed to evaluate the interobserver agreement in CHD evaluation based on the Federation Cynologique International system (FCI system). Ten original radiographs were sent to five different groups of observers, from students to certified veterinarians. They were asked to evaluate the ventro-dorsal radiographs according to the FCI system which is the most common system used in Europe to give the final grades (A, B, C, D, E). The grades were converted to numbers and the data were analysed using a one-way ANOVA test. The results showed that only in 20% of the cases, the interobserver agreement was statistically higher in the group of the most experienced observers when compared to the less experienced group of observers. This means that the level of experience does not always lead to a higher agreement. This could be a problem of widespread objective evaluations of CHD. In addition, there are several different systems of evaluation used in various countries. It is necessary to understand the intention of dog owners, who when buying a dog may be planning its first breeding. Therefore, the “correct” or “incorrect” assessment of the CHD radiographs may not always result in the elimination of affected individuals. We do not know exactly the situation of the development of the hip in some breeds, because scrutineers are receiving only “negative radiographs” for evaluation. Many owners are very educated about hip and elbow dysplasia. It is a time to tell the scientific truth.

Canine hip dysplasia, a debilitating orthopedic disorder that leads to osteoarthritis and cartilage degeneration, is common in several large-sized dog breeds and shows moderate heritability suggesting that selection can reduce prevalence. Estimating genomic breeding values require large reference populations, which are expensive to genotype for development of genomic prediction tools. Combining datasets from different countries could be an option to help build larger reference datasets without incurring extra genotyping costs. Our objective was to evaluate genomic prediction based on a combination of UK and US datasets of genotyped dogs with records of Norberg angle scores, related to canine hip dysplasia. Prediction accuracies using a single population were 0.179 and 0.290 for 1,179 and 242 UK and US Labrador Retrievers, respectively. Prediction accuracies changed to 0.189 and 0.260, with an increased bias of genomic breeding values when using a joint training set (biased upwards for the US population and downwards for the UK population). Our results show that in this study of canine hip dysplasia, little or no benefit was gained from using a joint training set as compared to using a single population as training set. We attribute this to differences in the genetic background of the two populations as well as the small sample size of the US dataset.

Summary: Canine hip dysplasia is characterized by poor hip joint conformation and laxity. The disease is a complex trait influenced by both genetics and environment. Diagnosis and quantification of hip dysplasia are performed by radiographic examination of the hip joint and the diagnosis is used for making breeding decisions in many breeds. A prognostic genetic test (the Dysgen test) based on seven associated SNPs has been developed in a study based on Spanish Labrador Retrievers. In our study this test has been evaluated in 39 Danish Labrador Retrievers with known radiographic hip score: 14 with hip dysplasia (grade D or E) and 25 without hip dysplasia (grade A or B). There was no significant correlation between the Dysgen test results and the radiographic hip status (P = 0.3203) in these dogs, indicating that Dysgen test results obtained for Danish Labrador Retrievers have no prognostic value. The aim of this study was to get precise normal values of the femoral neck angle (FNA) in support of developing an optimally functioning total hip prosthesis for medium and large dog breeds. Accordingly, two- and three-dimensional computed tomographic images of the anatomical structures of the proximal femora of 58, hip-dysplasia-free, mature dogs of medium and large breeds were studied. Based on the length of their femora the dogs were allocated to Group I (from 145 to 195 mm) and Group II (from 196 to 240 mm). The FNA was measured on each femur using multi-slice spiral computed tomography (CT). The two- and three-dimensional image data were processed as multi-planar and threedimensional reconstructions using Advantage Workstation software. The CT measurements revealed that Group I had an average femoral neck angle of 147.59° (min. 144.05°, max. 153.35°), while in Group II the average FNA was 147.46° (min. 141°, max. 154.35°). There was no significant correlation between the length of the femur and the FNA in either group. The optimal FNA for a total hip prosthesis is 147.5° for medium and large dog breeds. Osteoarthritis in the dog is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders that has become a medical and financial problem for the owners. A big problem is treating of the dogs suffering from the side effects that arise as a consequence of OA pain therapy. In the present study, 19 dogs of different races with definite diagnoses of osteoarthritis (OA) and / or hip dysplasia (DSC) were included. In pursuit of the condition of healing / amelioration of osteoarthritis conditions in dogs, two objectives were followed: a) the chronic pain monitoring of acupuncture dogs, via a well-established questionnaire, a multifactorial descriptive scale; b) Influence of acupuncture on blood parameters in chronic pain in the dogs. Dogs grouping was based on the previous use of analgesics and on the Helsinki Chronic Pain Index (HCPI). The dogs were randomly divided into two lots: a group that received acupuncture and antalgic treatments and a placebo (control) not treated. Initially the animals in the study were subjected to exploratory radiographs, and blood samples were collected to determine prolactin and serotonin values. The results revealed that both serotonin and prolactin did not undergo significant quantitative changes during the study in both dogs groups, receiving acupuncture and those in the control group. The questionnaire used is a valid tool for assessing chronic locomotor pain in dogs and we recommend it for the clinical trials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIM: To obtain provisional estimates of the heritability (h2 ) of passive laxity of the coxofemoral joints of a breeding colony of German Shepherd dogs, measured using the PennHIP distraction index (DI). METHODS: Records were obtained of the PennHIP DI of right and left hips of 195 German Shepherd dogs (377 DI records) from the dog breeding colony of the New Zealand Police Dog Breeding Centre between 2003 and 2016, as well as pedigree records of 884 animals over four generations. Estimates of h2 and variance components for the log transformed DI data were obtained using restricted maximum likelihood procedures with a single trait sire model. Four DI traits for each dog were analysed: left hip, right hip, mean and worse-hip DI. The model included the fixed effects of sex and year of birth, with the age at scoring as a covariable, the random sire effect and residual error for each observation. RESULTS: The h2 of the DI of the left hip (0.81, SE 0.40) was higher than the h2 of the DI of the right hip (0.35, SE 0.36). The h2 for the worse-hip DI (0.15, SE 0.28) in each dog was lower than the h2 of the individual hip DI, or the h2 for the mean of the two hips (0.53, SE 0.36) in each dog. The low number of generations prevented a meaningful analysis of the genetic trend. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The h2 estimates for the left, right and mean DI traits were moderate to high, whereas the h2 estimates for the worse-hip DI (as used by the PennHIP programme for ranking of dogs) was low, but all estimates had large SE due to the small sample size. This provisional estimate of the h2 of four distraction index traits suggests that the mean DI could be useful as a selection tool against canine hip dysplasia in German Shepherd dogs, whereas the worse-hip DI may be less effective. Heritability estimates from a population with a greater number of DI measures is needed to validate this finding given the large SE in our study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LTV) has become the topic of discussions of veterinarians, breeders and owners of the dogs, especially in connection with genetics and its possible impact on canine hip joint dysplasia (HD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of LTV in dogs examined for HD at one clinic during the years 2016 and 2017. We assessed the possible connection between these two diseases in two hunting breeds: Bavarian Mountain Dog and Hanoverian Mountain Dog. There is only little evidence, when compared to some other large breed dogs, on occurrence of the LTV in mentioned hunting breeds. These two breeds are the most common among hunting dogs undergoing HD screening in Slovakia, in addition, they are unlikely affected with clinical signs of the cauda equina entrapment. The Cauda equina syndrome is the common clinical manifestation of lumbosacral transitional vertebra and this can have negative impact on the mobility and quality of life. In this study, the incidence of lumbosacral transitional vertebra in the investigated group of 169 dogs was 66.86%. The LTV type 1 was present in 36.09% of dogs, LTV type 2 was present in 18.34% of dogs and LTV type 3 in 12.43% of dogs. The direct relationship between occurrence of LTV and HD was not confirmed. Understanding morphological features that characterize normal hip joint is critical and necessary for a more comprehensive definition of pathological presentations, such as femoroacetabular impingement and hip dysplasia. Based on anatomical observations that articular surfaces of synovial joints are better represented by ovoidal shapes than by spheres, the aim of this study is to computationally test this morphological classification for the femoral head and acetabular cavity of asymptomatic, dysplastic and impinged hips by comparing spherical, ellipsoidal and ovoidal shapes. An image-based surface fitting framework was used to assess the goodness-of-fit of spherical, ellipsoidal and tapered ellipsoidal (i.e., egg-like) shapes. The framework involved image segmentation with active contour methods, mesh smoothing and decimation, and surface fitting to point clouds performed with genetic algorithms. Image data of the hip region was obtained from computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans. Shape analyses were performed upon image data from 20 asymptomatic, 20 dysplastic and 20 impinged (cam, pincer, and mixed) hips of patients with ages ranging between 18 and 45 years old (28 male and 32 women). Tapered ellipsoids presented the lowest fitting errors (i.e., more oval), followed by ellipsoids and spheres which had the worst goodness-of-fit. Ovoidal geometries are also more representative of cam, pincer, mixed impinged hips when compared to spherical or ellipsoidal shapes. The statistical analysis of the surface fitting errors reveal that ovoidal shapes better represent both articular surfaces of the hip joint, revealing a greater approximation to the overall features of asymptomatic, dysplastic and impinged cases. ABSTRACT: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in humans is a common condition that is associated with hip pain, functional limitations, and secondary osteoarthritis (OA). Surgical treatment of DDH has improved in the last decade, allowing excellent outcomes at short‐ and mid‐term follow‐up. Still, the etiology, mechanobiology, and pathology underlying this disease are not well understood. A pre‐clinical animal model of DDH could help advance the field with a deeper understanding of specific pathways that initiate hip joint degeneration secondary to abnormal biomechanics. An animal model would also facilitate different interventional treatments that could be tested in a rigorous and controlled environment. The dog model exhibits several important characteristics that make it valuable as a pre‐clinical animal model for human DDH. Dogs are naturally prone to develop canine hip dysplasia (CHD), which is treated in a similar manner as in humans. Comparable to human DDH, CHD is considered a pre‐OA disease; if left untreated it will progress to OA. However, progression to OA is significantly faster in dogs than humans, with progression to OA within 1–2 years of age, associated with their shorter life span compared to humans. Animal studies could potentially reveal the underlying biochemical pathway(s), which can inform refined treatment modalities and provide opportunities for new treatment and prevention targets. Background: Double chambered right ventricle (DCRV) is a congenital heart anomaly where the right ventricle is divided into two chambers. We describe, for the first time, an unusual combination of DCRV combined with some other congenital heart defects. Case presentation: A 1.2-year-old Golden Retriever was presented with lethargy, exercise intolerance and ascites. Physical examination revealed an irregularly irregular pulse and a grade V/VI, systolic, right cranial murmur. Electrocardiography revealed widened and splintered QRS complexes with a right bundle-branch block pattern. Radiography demonstrated right-sided cardiomegaly. Two-dimensional echocardiography identified a DCRV with tricuspid valve dysplasia. The patient died despite abdominocentesis and 4 days of oral pharmacotherapy, and necropsy revealed an anomalous fibromuscular structure that divided the right ventricle into two compartments. Another finding was tricuspid valve dysplasia with hypoplasia of the posterior and septal leaflets. The anterior leaflet was prominent, being part of the anomalous structure that divided the right ventricle. Necropsy also identified a perimembranous ventricular septal defect and mild subaortic stenosis. Histopathological examination of the fibromuscular band that separated the right ventricle identified longitudinally oriented layers of dense fibrous connective tissue and myocardial cells arranged in a plexiform pattern. The muscular component was well represented at the ventral area of the fibromuscular band, and was absent in the central zone. Superficially, the endocardium presented areas of nodular hyperplasia covering mainly the fibrous part of the abnormal structure. The nodules were sharply demarcated and were composed by loosely arranged connective tissue with myxoid appearance, covered by discrete hyperplastic endocardium. Conclusions: Concomitant cardiac malformations involving DCRV, tricuspid valve dysplasia, perimembranous ventricular septal defect and mild subaortic stenosis have not been previously described in veterinary medicine, and are reported here for the first time. Moreover, this is the first report of a canine patient with tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD) and DCRV where the anterior leaflet is part of an anomalous structure dividing the right ventricle (RV) into two separate compartments.
