Through the reading of four texts on the history of botany in Brazil, written by intellectuals renowned in their field in the 20th century, this article pursues a double objective: to analyse the selected texts and the contexts in which they were written. Arthur Neiva, Frederico Carlos Hoehne, Fernando de Azevedo and Mario Guimarães Ferri shared a common interest in the history of science and produced synthesis papers in the 20th century, focused on Brazil. This study describes the work of each of them, the context in which they wrote and draws parallels between the approaches of the texts written on the history of botany in Brazil, identifying similarities in terms of the content selected and the form. The divergences are also addressed, and it is possible to identify the debates and disputes held in the name of national science, of the university, of the botanical research and the privileged place in which knowledge should be produced. The research indicates that the narratives were a stage for disputes, marked by the trajectories and actions of their authors, who emphasized chronological markers, notable botanists, and paths of progress according to their conceptions of science and society.
