BACKGROUND: As a result of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, compliance with isolation measures has become challenging. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the individual workload perception and compliance with isolation measures of nurses working in the emergency service and critical care unit during the COVID-19 outbreak. METHODS: This descriptive correlational study was carried out in the emergency service and critical care unit of a public hospital between April 20 and May 20, 2021. A total of 153 nurses working in the emergency service and critical care unit who agreed to participate in the study were included in the study. RESULTS: Nurses from a state hospital’s emergency department and critical care unit (n = 153) were included in the study sample. The impression of overall individual workload by nurses and compliance with isolation (r = 0.153; p < 0.05) had a positive, weak, and significant relationship. The Isolation Measures Compliance Scale resulted in a mean score of 70.70±5.35. The mean score on the Individual Workload Scale for nurses was moderate (3.22±0.54). CONCLUSION: The low perception of individual workload of nurses working in the emergency service and critical care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic increased the compliance with isolation measures.

It was aimed to examine the studies investigating the effect of listening to music in reducing pain in the postoperative period. The research was conducted on the effect of listening to music in reducing postoperative pain, published between 20.05.2019 and 01.07.2019, in quasi-experimental or experimental design, dealing with adult patient sample, including operations performed under general/regional anesthesia, accessed to a full-text article, published in Turkish and English articles are included. Literature search on the subject was carried out between 20.05.2019 and 01.07.2019 using Cochrane Library, Turkey Citation Index, Ebscohost ASC (Ulakbim, Medline) databases. Key words in the screening were determined as “music, surgery, postoperative pain”. The titles and abstracts of the accessed articles were examined and their suitability for the study was checked. In order to obtain the desired data from the articles suitable for the research, a data collection form in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 checklist was prepared by the researchers and the studies were evaluated. In the study, a total of 1998 articles were reached as a result of the search. It was determined that 15 articles were suitable for inclusion in the study. Background: It is important to know the herbal products and food supplements used by individuals with diabetes in the management of type 2 diabetes. This study aims to examine the use of herbal products/food supplements in glycemic control of individuals with type 2 diabetes.Method and Material: This descriptive study, three government hospitals Diabetes Monitoring and Education Clinic in Turkey, was performed with 118 individuals with type 2 diabetes who volunteered to participate. The data were collected using the Introductory Information Form and the Data Form questioning the use of herbal products / food supplements.Results: It was determined that 28.8% of the participants used herbal products for glycemic control. Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a major surgery that may cause severe surgical stress response (SR). Although the presence of family members in intensive care unit (ICU) is known to benefit intensive care patients socially and emotionally, its effects on surgical SR are unknown. Objectives: To investigate the effect of an informed family member (IFM)’s presence in the awakening process in ICU on patients’ SR after CABG. Methods: A nonrandomized controlled clinical study was completed with a total of 73 patients: 37 patients in the control (CG) and 36 in the intervention group (IG) underwent CABG surgery. In the CG patients, no family members were taken into the ICU during the awakening process and routine care and treatment practices were continued. In the IG patients, besides routine care and treatment practices, an IFM was taken into the ICU during the awakening process in accordance with the research method. Groups were statistically compared in terms of serum cortisol level which is the one of the main indicators of surgical SR, state anxiety, sedative drug requirements, and duration of intubation, sedation, and ICU stay. Violence against nurses working in the emergency department is a serious problem worldwide.This descriptive study used a participant questionnaire and was conducted in-person, using semi-structured interviews with 120 emergency nurses (69 female, 51 male) working in the emergency department between September 1 and November 30, 2017.Overall, 90% of the study participants were exposed to workplace violence at least once while working in the emergency department, and 94.4% experienced verbal abuse, including insults, shouting, threats, and swearing. Most of such workplace violence came from the patients relatives. Most workplace violence incidents occurred during the 4 pm to midnight time slot and in the triage area. The most important perceived reasons for workplace violence were the long waiting period for treatment and care (79.6%) and not being prioritized for treatment (68.5%). The top 3 coping methods used were reporting to the nurse in charge (78.1%), followed by reaching out to the security personnel (72.8%) and filing lawsuits if exposed to physical violence (65.8%).Most emergency nurses had experienced workplace violence. Hospital administration should take more effective security measures, hospitals should provide education and training programs for dealing with workplace violence, and programs to support staff members on encountering workplace violence should be implemented.

Aim: With increased survival rates after liver transplantation (LT), studies have focused on improving the quality of life in these patients. The purpose of this study is to assess the quality of life levels of recipients after LT. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 103 voluntary patients between January 01-May 15, 2015. The sample of the study consisted of the patients who had liver transplantation and met the inclusion criteria. The data were collected using personal and disease information form and SF-36 health survey. Results: It was found in the study that the mean score of the Physical Component Summary (PCS) was 39.90±8.53 and the mean score of the Mental Component Summary (MCS) was 43.93±9.86. The patients who underwent LT had a moderate quality of life. The MCS score enhanced with increasing level of education. The PCS score is higher in those with men, single patients, cadavers as the source of transplantation, and those without a prolonging post-operative hospitalisation. Another finding of the study indicated that PCS score enhanced as the time elapsed after transplantation increased. In addition, patients with chronic diseases had lower physical health quality of life. Conclusion: Although many complications develop in most of the patients, LT can make the patient more functional in many areas of life compared to their pre-transplantation life. The patients should be referred to other departments regularly to keep chronic diseases under control.

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate nurses’ knowledge of protective precautions and their experiences of various factors during the Covid-19 pandemic. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, the snowball method was selected for sampling to access nurses (n = 392) serving in the fight against the Covid-19 infection nationwide. The online data collection form had two parts: a sociodemographic form and a second part including 25 items on institutional protective measures, personal protective measures, and nursing care. Results: Most of the nurses caring for patients with Covid-19 were well-informed about institutional, personal, and patient protective precautions. The scores of female nurses, married nurses and those with children were higher. Multiple regression analysis revealed that in-service training, working in a clinic, and having colleagues diagnosed with Covid-19 positively affected knowledge, while having 0–5 years of professional experience negatively affected knowledge. Conclusion: This study may enlighten medical authorities and policymakers in their efforts to promote the quality of care delivered to patients with Covid-19 and the quality of working conditions of healthcare providers. © 2022 Central European Journal of Nursing and Midwifery.

Background A long-term diabetic complication, fatigue, which is a direct result of treatment and psychological processes, is a common symptom in diabetic individuals. Aims To determine the reliability and validity of Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Treatment-Fatigue Scale in Turkish patients with type 2 diabetes. Study design A methodological study. Methods The sample consisted of 133 patients with type 2 diabetes who agreed to participate in the study and met the criteria for the study. Data were collected using the descriptive information form prepared by the researcher and the Scale obtained from FACIT System. The research data were collected by face-to-face interviews with the patients. Language and content validity of the Turkish version of the Scale was provided, Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, test–retest analysis and item analysis methods were used as reliability analysis. Results The total Cronbach Alpha coefficient of the scale was found to be 0.92. According to the results of factor analysis, unlike the original scale, two sub-dimensions emerged in the Turkish version of the scale. Conclusions As a result of the validity and reliability analysis of the FACIT-Fatigue Scale, it can be said that it provides psychometric measures that can be used to determine the level of fatigue of type 2 diabetes patients in Turkish society.

Background: This study aims to investigate the factors affecting food intake in perioperative period of patients who undergo open heart surgery and the effects of body weight, albumin and hemoglobin values, nausea, vomiting and constipation on food intake.Methods: This cross -sectional study was conducted between 4 February 2015 and 4 May 2015 in a cardiovascular surgery clinic. A questionnaire including 25 questions was applied to a total of 86 volunteer participants (62 males, 24 females; mean age 61.310.8 years; range 38 to 82 years).Results: Patients consumed 38% of the food one day before the surgery and 51% one day after, 47% three days after, and 52% five days after the surgery. Factors affecting food intake were the procedure of discontinuing food intake for pre-surgery anesthesia preparation (84.9%), nausea (31.4%) one day after surgery, and constipation three (26.5%) and five (33.7%) days after surgery. Albumin levels decreased significantly in days after surgery compared to the day before surgery (p0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between food intake rates and albumin levels on the first, third and fifth days after surgery (r0.354, r0.353, and r0.521, respectively; p0.05).Conclusion: Patients’ body weight and albumin levels decreased in accordance with their nourishment status after surgery. Food intake was insufficient in the perioperative period. Amaç: Bu çalışmada açık kalp cerrahisi uygulanan hastaların perioperatif dönemde besin alımını etkileyen faktörler ve vücut ağırlığı, albümin ve hemoglobin değerleri, mide bulantısı, kusma ve kabızlığın besin alımı üzerindeki etkileri araştırıldı.Çalışma planı: Bu kesitsel çalışma 4 Şubat 2015-4 Mayıs 2015 tarihleri arasında bir kalp damar cerrahisi kliniğinde gerçekleştirildi. Toplam 86 gönüllü katılımcıya (62 erkek, 24 kadın; ort. yaş 61.2510.77 yıl; dağılım 38-82 yıl) 25 sorudan oluşan bir anket formu uygulandı.Bulgular: Hastalar cerrahiden bir gün önce besinin %38’ini, cerrahiden bir gün sonra %51’ini, üç gün sonra %47’sini ve beş gün sonra %52’sini tüketti. Besin alımını kesintiye uğratan faktörler cerrahi öncesi anestezi hazırlığında besin alımını durdurma prosedürü (%84.9), cerrahiden bir gün sonra bulantı (%31.4) ve cerrahiden üç (%26.5) ve beş (%33.7) gün sonra kabızlık idi. Albümin düzeyleri cerrahiden sonraki günlerde cerrahiden önceki bir güne kıyasla anlamlı olarak azaldı (p0.05). Cerrahi sonrası birinci, üçüncü ve beşinci günlerde besin alımı oranları ile albümin düzeyleri arasında anlamlı bir pozitif ilişki vardı (sırasıyla r0.354, r0.353 ve r0.521; p0.05).Sonuç: Cerrahi sonrası hastaların beslenme durumlarına göre vücut ağırlıkları ve albümin düzeyleri azaldı. Amaç: Bu çalışmada bir vakıf üniversitesinin öğrencilerinin organ bağışına yönelik bilgi ve düşüncelerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.Gereç ve Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipte olan araştırmanın evrenini 15-30 Ocak 2013 tarihleri arasında üniversitede öğrenim gören 950, örneklemini ise araştırmaya katılmaya gönüllü olan 504 öğrenci oluşturmuştur. Çalışma verileri araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen soru formu aracılığıyla ve öğrencilerle yüz-yüze görüşme yöntemiyle toplanmıştır. Tanımlayıcı istatistik olarak sayı, yüzde, ortalama±standart sapma ve karşılaştırmalarda Ki-kare analizi yapılmıştır. İstatistiksel anlamlılık için p0.05). Öğrencilerin sadece %3.6’sı herhangi bir organını bağışladığını, %30.1’i bağışlamayı düşündüğünü belirtmiştir. En çok bağışlamayı istedikleri organlar; böbrek, kalp, kemik iliği ve karaciğer olmuştur. “Organ bağışı konusunda toplum bilinçli mi?” sorusuna öğrencilerin %84.9’ü “hayır” yanıtı vermiş, %70.2’i organ bağışı konusunda bilgi almak istediğini belirtmiştir. Sonuç: Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin organ bağısı konusunda önemli ölçüde bilgi eksiği olduğu; çok azının organlarını bağışladığı ve çoğunun bu konuda bilgi edinmek istediği belirlenmiştir. Üniversite öğrencilerine yönelik organ bağışı konusunda bilgi verici ve özendirici etkinliklerin düzenlenmesinin yararlı olacağı kanısına varılmıştır.

Background: This study aims to investigate relatives' thoughts and expectations on visitation of patients who are in terminal phase and being treated in cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit. Methods: This study was conducted in a cardiovascular surgery-intensive care unit between May 2014 and August 2014 using a qualitative and phenomenological study design. Eighteen volunteer relatives were included in the study. Data were collected using an introductory information questionnaire and a semi-structured interview questionnaire. Individual and face-to-face interviews were carried out and tapes were recorded. Results: The mean age of the patients was 67.1 +/- 11.5, 61.1% were males, and 66.7% were hospitalized in the intensive care unit due to heart failure. The mean intensive care unit duration was 11.0 +/- 5.8 days. The majority of the relatives were females (72.2%), 38.9% were in the 31-50 age group, 61.1% were elementary school graduates, most (61.1%) were unemployed, and 55.6% were sons or daughters of the patients. Content analysis of the relatives' statements revealed two themes; "barriers" and "expectations", and four categories including two categories for each theme. These categories were defined as "restriction of visits", "visitation hours and frequency", "information and communication" and "religious and traditional needs". Most participants reported that they encountered various restrictions on visitation, they were not informed sufficiently, and they were not fully allowed for their religious and traditional practices for their patients. Conclusion: Relatives experience various restrictions during the intensive care unit stay of their patients in terminal phase. We conclude that it is beneficial to consider relatives' expectations in the regulation of visitation.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of preoperative fasting and fluid limitation in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Although traditional long-term fasting is not recommended in current preoperative guidelines, this is still a common intervention. Visual analogue scale was used to assess hunger, thirst, sleepiness, exhaustion, nausea and pain; State and Trait Anxiety Inventory was used to assess the preoperative anxiety of 99 patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Mean time of preoperative fasting and fluid limitation were, respectively, 14.70 ± 3.14 and 11.25 ± 3.74 h. Preoperatively, 58.60% of the patients experienced moderate anxiety. Patients fasting 12 h or longer had higher hunger, thirst, nausea and pain scores. The mean trait anxiety score of patients fasting 12 h or longer was statistically significantly higher. Receiving nothing by mouth after midnight preoperatively is a persisted intervention and results in discomfort of patients. Clinical protocols should be revised and nurses should be trained in current fasting protocols.

Background: Despite the growing awareness on pain management, mild and severe pain is still common among hospitalized patients. Inadequate treatment has been mostly linked to health care workers' failure to assess patients’ pain and to intervene appropriately.Objective: To determine the pain management knowledge and attitudes of the nurses working in training and research hospital in Turkey and their relationship to demographic and educational factors. Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study design was used. The Nurses’ Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (NKASRP) was used to determine the pain-related knowledge and attitude of the nurses. Results: A total of 246 nurses were included in the study. The percentage working at a surgical unit was 48.8% and 77.2% were staff nurses. Only 11.8% had taken a pain management course and 31.7% had read a book or journal on pain. The rate of correct responses to the NKASRP scale was 39.65% while the mean number of correct answers to all questions was 15.86±7.33 with a range of 0 to 37. Transthoracic cardioversion (TTC) is widely used in emergency departments and daily clinical practice. TTC may cause skin lesions on the application of apical and sternal paddle areas. The lesions are characterised by redness, erythema and blister(s), and can be defined as first degree burns locally causing pain and increased sensitivity.To evaluate the effectiveness of local cold application on reducing the incidence, severity and pain/sensitivity of skin burns in patients who underwent TTC.The study was conducted in the intensive care unit of the cardiovascular surgery department. The patients were assigned to study (n=24) and control groups (n=24). Local cold application was performed for a 1 hour period on patients in the study group, whereas only clinical procedures were applied in the control group following TTC. Incidence and severity of burn was evaluated 2 h after TTC, and pain/sensitivity scores were evaluated at 2, 4 and 24 h after TTC. Results The incidence of burn was significantly lower in the study group (3/24) compared to the control group (21/24) (12.5% vs 83.3%, p0.001). Pain/sensitivity scores were significantly lower in the study group compared to the control group (p0.05).Local cold application following TTC is an effective means of reducing the incidence and severity of burns and pain/sensitivity. It is cost-effective and can easily be applied by nurses in medical/surgical units and emergency departments.

The objective of the study was to determine the perceptions of a group of patients on intensive care units' (ICUs) stressors and the perceptions of nurses on ICU patients' stressors in Turkey, and compare the differences in patients' and nurses' perception of the stressors in ICUs. In this descriptive study, 155 patients who were admitted to medical or surgical ICUs and 152 nurses who are employed in the same units of two training and research hospitals in Turkey were enrolled in this study. The ICU Environmental Stressor Scale (ICUESS) was used to determine intensive care stressors. According to total ICUESS mean scores, patients (91.41 ± 34.91) perceived significantly less stress than the ICU nurses (133.23 ± 32.20) perceived them to have. Both patients and nurses ranked 'fear of death' as the greatest stressor. Physiological stressors were identified as the most important stressors by both patients and nurses. Patients and nurses in medical ICUs were more affected by stressors than their counterparts in surgical ICUs. Patients with unplanned or emergency admissions perceived higher stress than that of patients with planned admissions. Several factors could help reduce these stressors, such as having familiar arrangements, humane ICU environment, individual patient assessments and appropriate nursing interventions.

The aim of this study was to determine nurses' perceptions of the barriers to and facilitators of research utilization in Turkey. Barriers Scale was utilized in the research, and the population was 631 nurses. According to the research results, the first three important barriers were inadequate authority (63.6%), lack of time (54.0%), and insufficient facilities (52.8%). Nurses have perceived the organizational management support as the most important easing factor in their applications (n = 156). It is highly recommended that nurses be trained in research methods and evidence-based practice, that research articles be written more clearly, and that Research and Development centers where nurses could get consultation services be established.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determine the life experiences and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients living with a urostomy. DESIGN: Cross-sectional descriptive study. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: This prospective and descriptive study was carried out in a research and training hospital in Gaziantep, Turkey; data were collected from May 2009 to September 2011. Twenty-four participants had undergone a urostomy operation at least 4 months before study participation. METHODS: A form querying pertinent demographic and clinical information, combined with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QoL Q-C30) was used for data collection. To determine the effect of nursing guide application developed for the present study and to evaluate the Early Warning Scoring System (EWSS) in post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU).The study was carried out as a randomised-controlled experimental study. The study sample comprised of 123 adult patients having thoracic and abdominal surgery between January 2011 and April 2011 in the Anaesthesiology and Reanimation Department of a training and research hospital. Patients were randomised during the pre-operative period; the patients who were followed-up according to the EWSS and a nursing guide constituted the study group (SG=63) and the patients whose EWSS score was calculated but routine follow-up in PACU was not intervened constituted the control group (CG=60).During the PACU, complications developed in in 34.92% of SG patients and in 30.00% of CG patients. Of the SG patients, 95.45% developing complications and of the CG patients, 22.22% developing complications were treated in the first 10 minutes, and it was determined that in 61.12% of CG patients, complications were not treated. There was a significant difference between the SG and CG patients in terms of treatment duration against complications (p0.05).The EWSS and nurse's guide provides early determination and treatment of patients developing complications. Thus, it is recommended to use the EWSS and a nursing guide in PACU.

Aim. To determine the effect of preoperative skin preparation procedures performed by nurses on postoperative surgical siteinfection in abdominal surgery.Background. Despite all interventions, postoperative SSIs still greatly affect mortality and morbidity.Design. This is an experimental study.Methods. Procedures developed for nurse application of preoperative skin preparations were tested on a control group (n = 39)and study group (n = 43).Results. Only clinical routines for preoperative skin preparation were performed on the control group patients. Control groupmembers’ skins were mostly prepared by shaving with a razor blade (41%). For the study group members, the researchers usedthe preoperative skin preparation procedure. Clippers were used to prepare 55AE8% of study group members while 44AE2% ofthem were not treated with the clipper because their wounds were clean. As a requirement of the procedure, all members of thestudy group had a chlorhexidine bath at least twice after being hospitalised and at least once a night before the operation undercontrolled conditions. In the group where chlorhexidine bath was not applied, the infection risk was found to be 4AE76 times(95%CI = 1AE20–18AE83) greater even after corrections for age and gender had been made. The difference between control groupand study group with respect to surgical site infections was also statistically significant (p < 0AE05).Conclusion. Preoperative skin preparation using clipper on the nights before an operation and a 50 ml chlorhexidine bathexcluding head area taken twice in the pre-operative period are useful to reduce SSI during postoperative period.Relevance to clinical practice. Kidney transplantation is one of the best treatment methods for significantly improving the quality of life for patients suffering from kidney disease. Transplantation patients expose to many stress because of operation and hospital environment. Patients who had kidney transplantation, concern about emerging of rejection risk and health status of donor. It was determined that patients with whom had good communication, given information before the surgery and care needs fulfilled, were willing to participate in their care and care management after discharging. This case presentation includes implementations and evaluations of a nursing care plan which improved for caring for a patient who had kidney transplantation from his wife/husband and being hospitalized at a university hospital. Our case presentation aims to prepare standard care plan for donor and recipient, to increase patient care quality and, to reduce the nurse’s work load with the systematic approach.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the views and the level of information regarding patient safety of the senior nursing students in a school of nursing. A descriptive design was used, with a convenience sample of 81 students at a university of military nursing in Turkey. Data were collected by using a questionnaire descriptive characteristics of the participants, their knowledge and views about patient safety. The first three topics included in the concept of patient safety from the students’ views are provision of medicine safety (87.65 %), avoiding/following up infection in hospitals (87.65 %), avoiding patients’ falling down (86.41 %). The views of the participants about the reporting of an adverse event it is found that that they mostly will inform about it to the authorized nurse in the hospital. These findings show that the participants have a positive attitude towards informing about adverse events to others. This study underlines the importance of education and the need for implementing the patient safety in the nursing education. In order to establish safe environments for health-care and to have lasting effects, the students’ awareness about patient safety should be improved.
