Background and Study Aim. The progressive aging of the global population presents significant challenges, particularly in maintaining the functional reserves of vital systems. The respiratory system is crucial for sustaining physical performance. However, it is especially vulnerable to age-related decline. This study aims to assess the impact of structured physical activity on the respiratory function of sports-active veteran track-and-field athletes aged 50–59 and 60–75 years. Material and methods. A total of 93 men were examined, including 54 in the reference group (30 men with an average age of 53.67±0.25 years and 24 with an average age of 67.08±0.35 years). These men were involved in athletics in the past but did not participate in veteran sports. The study group included 29 athletics veterans. Among them, 18 individuals had an average age of 52.27±0.18 years, and 11 had an average age of 65.64±0.16 years. These athletes engage in specifically organized physical activity 2–4 times a week and have participated in athletics competitions over the last five years. Anthropometric measurements included the assessment of chest circumference at rest, maximal inspiration, maximal exhalation, and diaphragmatic excursion (DE). The functional state of the respiratory system was assessed using the SpiroCom diagnostic complex (HAI). The data were processed using the SPSS Statistics 17.0 software. Results. Sports veterans aged 50–59 years and those over 60 years exhibit statistically significant differences compared to their peers in several indicators. These include diaphragmatic excursion, tidal volume, minute volume, respiratory rate, tidal volume maximal, respiratory rate maximal, and maximal voluntary ventilation. The respiratory reserve indicator showed a lower degree of respiratory function tension during physical exertion. Statistically significantly higher values of external respiration indicators were found in veteran athletes compared to men with no regular activity (NRA). These indicators include expiratory time, forced expiratory volume in 1 second, and forced expiratory volume maximal. Additionally, veteran athletes showed higher values in the modified Tiffeneau-Pinelli index, peak expiratory flow, and forced expiratory flow at 25%, 50%, 75%, and forced mid-expiratory flow. As a result, sports veterans with high regular activity (RA) exhibited the lowest rates of regressive-destructive changes in the respiratory system indicators overall, with the exception of HOD and BH. In contrast, men with low RA are characterized by an accelerated rate of aging in the respiratory system. Conclusions. The results of the study identified indicators that can serve as spirographic criteria for selecting functional types. These types include individuals with low, medium, and high regular activity (RA). It has been proven that systematic exercises involving specially organized cyclic motor activity form a rational, physiologically optimal type of breathing. Additionally, these exercises inhibit age-related degenerative-dystrophic processes in the human respiratory system.

Therefore, players were expected to jump and regain their balance, challenging their dynamic balance (DB). Nonetheless, range of motion (ROM) is closely related to balance. Hence, this study aimed to compare recreational ST players' ankle ROM and DB differences with and without ankle injuries. Material and Methods. Objectives: the goal of the study was to identify the relationship between horizontal and vertical jumping tests with the incidence of lower limb musculoskeletal injuries in soccer players of a professional league club in Colombia. Materials and methods: an analytical, prospective study was carried out on 30 players from the professional roster of Club Deportivo Atlético Junior F.C. At the beginning of the season the anthropometric characteristics and body composition were evaluated, as well as jumping and functional asymmetries of the lower extremities through vertical (CMJ and CMJs) and horizontal (3-Hop-Test) jumping tests. The analysis consisted in comparing the records of the variables studied between the players with (injured n=11) and without injury (not-injured n=19) during the first semester of the 2019 season. Results: no statistical differences were found between the groups in the biological, anthropometric and body composition characteristics (p> 0.05). Derived from the vertical jumping findings, no significant differences were observed in the asymmetries between groups (p> 0.05), however, significant asymmetries were found in the horizontal jumping tests between injured and uninjured players (p <0.01). Conclusion: from this study we can conclude that unlike uninjured professional soccer players, there were significantly greater functional asymmetries identified through the horizontal jumping test in athletes with injuries. Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo con una muestra de 71 boxeadores a los cuales se les examinaron las estructuras de referencia mediante oftalmoscopia directa y biomicroscopia ocular, antes de las 6 horas posteriores al término de sus peleas; donde se obtuvo como resultado que los anexos afectados fueron los párpados con 5 hematomas, 4 edemas y 1 excoriación; y la conjuntiva con 4 hiperemias y 8 hemorragias. En el segmento anterior del ojo sólo se afectó la córnea con 13 lesiones en total, divididas en 10 excoriaciones superficiales y 3 profundas. Las lesiones traumáticas predominantes en los anexos del ojo son las de los párpados y las de la conjuntiva y las del segmento anterior del ojo, las de la córnea. El ojo más afectado fue el izquierdo y las lesiones más frecuentes fueron en las categorías de 13 y 14, 17 y 18 y 19 y 34 años las corneales, las conjuntivales y la de los párpados, respectivamente.A retrospective study was carried out with a sample of 71 fighters, whose reference structures were examined by direct ophthalmoscopy and ocular biomicroscopy within the 6 hours following their fights. As a result, it was observed that the affected adnexa were the eyelids with 5 hematomas, 4 edemas and 1 excoriation; and the conjunctiva with 4 hyperemias and 8 hemorrhages. In the anteriro segment, only the cornea was affected with 13 lesions in all, divided into 10 superficial and 3 deep excoriations.The traumatic lesions prevailing in the adnexa of the eye are those of the eyelids and the conjunctiva, whereas the predominating traumatic lesions of the anterior segment of the eye are those of the cornea. The left eye was the most affected and the most frequent lesions were in the categories 13 and 14, 17 and 18 and 19 and 34 years old in the cornea, the conjunctiva and the eyelids, respectively.

Background: Although guidelines based on expert opinions have been developed for the immediate management and return to play of athletes after a concussion, data are lacking on this issue., Objectives: Evaluate a standardized management of brain concussion among rugby players to prevent the recurrence., Patients and Methods: A prospective study was performed from September 2009 to June 2012. All rugby players who had a concussion when playing rugby were included. Patients were managed by a specialized hospital team with a specific protocol developed in collaboration with the medical staff of the rugby clubs included in the study. The series included 35 rugby players, with 23 professionals and 12 high-level players, 30 men and 5 women, mean age 23.1 ± 5.5 years old. The median number of previous concussions was 2 (0-30) episodes. According to the Cantu concussion severity classification, 3 athletes were grade 1, 12 were grade 2 and 20 were grade 3. None of the injured athletes was lost to follow-up. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of a new concussion within 3 months after the first in patients who returned to rugby., Results: Thirty-three patients returned to rugby after a mean 22.1 ± 10 days. The recurrence rate within 3 months was 2/33 (6.1%). The median delay before returning to rugby was 21 (7-45) days. Factors associated with a delayed return to play were young age, initial loss of consciousness, severity Cantu grade 3 and post-concussive syndrome of more than 5 days. Analysis of two failures showed that the initial injury was grade 3 and that both were professional athletes and had a history of concussion., Conclusions: This prospective study validated the study protocol for the management of concussion in rugby players.
