Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a widely accepted technique for detecting trace asbestos content in solid samples. However, accurately quantifying asbestos concentrations below 0.5 wt% presents significant challenges with XRD alone. To address this limitation, we conducted a meticulous quantitative analysis using XRD on synthetic samples of talc-based powder spiked with varying amounts of natural tremolite and anthophyllite asbestos. At concentrations exceeding 0.5 wt%, both tremolite and anthophyllite displayed distinct XRD peaks. Yet, at lower concentrations (0.1 wt% and 0.05 wt%), the diffraction peaks of the contaminants became less prominent. To improve detection sensitivity, we explored different protocols of heavy liquid separation utilizing sodium polytungstate (SPT) to concentrate asbestos relative to the other mineral components. The optimized protocol, employing SPT with a density of 2.89 g/cm3, effectively separated amphibole asbestos from lighter, commonly associated minerals, like talc, clinochlore, and mica. Subsequent powder XRD analysis of the heavy fraction confirmed the successful removal of non-target materials, enhancing the diffraction peaks of tremolite and anthophyllite. Tremolite exhibited comparatively less weight loss than anthophyllite during this separation process. This study establishes the theoretical and practical viability of employing centrifugation in a heavy liquid to separate tremolite and anthophyllite from talc, providing valuable insights for asbestos detection and quantification in challenging scenarios. Asbestos ore was sampled from a historical anthophyllite mine in Staten Island, New York. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) was used to image the structure of nineteen fibers of the anthophyllite asbestos. The anthophyllite was characterized by a high level of chain width disorder, involving wide chain multiplicity faults (CMFs) that were frequent in fibers, randomly spaced, and ranged from one to eight chains in width. This chain width disorder was manifest by streaking of electron diffraction rows of chain width. The anthophyllite asbestos fibers were found to be produced by longitudinal splitting rather than crystal growth. Such splitting is a function of cleavage along CMFs rather than crystal boundaries. The morphology of the fibers is consistent with anthophyllite asbestos mined in Finland associated with lung cancer and mesothelioma. These findings may have regulatory implications. Background: Asbestos is the primary known cause of malignant mesothelioma. Some cosmetic talc products have been shown to contain asbestos. Recently, repeated exposures to cosmetic talc have been implicated as a cause of mesothelioma. Methods: Seventy‐five individuals (64 females; 11 males) with malignant mesothelioma, whose only known exposure to asbestos was repeated exposures to cosmetic talcum powders, were reviewed in medical‐legal consultation. Out of the 75 cases, 11 were examined for asbestiform fibers. Results: All subjects had pathologically confirmed malignant mesothelioma. The mean age at diagnosis was 61 ± 17 years. The mean latency from exposure to diagnosis was 50 ± 13 years. The mean exposure duration was 33 ± 16 years. Four mesotheliomas (5%) occurred in individuals working as barbers/cosmetologists, or in a family member who swept the barber shop. Twelve (16%) occurred in individuals less than 45 years old (10 females; 2 males). Forty‐eight mesotheliomas were pleural (40 females; 8 males), 23 were peritoneal (21 females; 2 males). Two presented with concomitant pleural and peritoneal disease. There was one pericardial, and one testicular mesothelioma. The majority (51) were of the epithelioid histological subtype, followed by 13 biphasic, 8 sarcomatoid, 2 lymphohistiocytoid, and 1 poorly differentiated. Of the 11 individuals whose nontumorous tissues were analyzed for the presence of asbestiform fibers, all showed the presence of anthophyllite and/or tremolite asbestos. Conclusions: Mesotheliomas can develop following exposures to cosmetic talcum powders. The onset of malignant mesothelioma (MM) is linked to exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestos fibers are classified as serpentine (chrysotile) or amphibole, which includes the crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite types. Although few studies have been undertaken, anthophyllite has been shown to be associated with mesothelioma, and tremolite, a contaminant in talc and chrysotile, is a risk factor for carcinogenicity. Here, after characterizing the length and width of these fibers by scanning electron microscopy, we explored the cytotoxicity induced by tremolite and anthophyllite in cells from an immortalized human mesothelial cell line (MeT5A), murine macrophages (RAW264.7), and in a rat model. Tremolite and short anthophyllite fibers were phagocytosed and localized to vacuoles, whereas the long anthophyllite fibers were caught on the pseudopod of the MeT5A and Raw 264.7 cells, according to transmission electron microscopy. The results from a 2‐day time‐lapse study revealed that tremolite was engulfed and damaged the MeT5A and RAW264.7 cells, but anthophyllite was not cytotoxic to these cells. Intraperitoneal injection of tremolite in rats induced diffuse serosal thickening, whereas anthophyllite formed focal fibrosis and granulomas on peritoneal serosal surfaces. Furthermore, the loss of Cdkn2a/2b, which are the most frequently lost foci in human MM, were observed in 8 cases of rat MM (homozygous deletion [5/8] and loss of heterozygosity [3/8]) by array‐based comparative genomic hybridization techniques. These results indicate that tremolite initiates mesothelial injury and persistently frustrates phagocytes, causing subsequent peritoneal fibrosis and MM. A metasomatic zone formed between the contact of a 2940 ± 5 Ma intrusive trondhjemite sheet in the Archean dunite of the Seqi Ultramafic Complex, SW Greenland, consists of three distinct mineral zones dominated by (1) talc, (2) anthophyllite, and (3) phlogopite. These zones supposedly resulted from a process of dissolution of olivine by silica rich fluid residual from the trondhjemite magma, with crystallization of secondary minerals along a compositional gradient in the fluid phase. A zircon crystal inclusion in a large (4 cm) olivine porphyroblast was dated in situ via LA-ICP-MS U-Pb isotope analysis, yielding a weighted mean 207Pb/ 206Pb age of 2963 ± 1 Ma, which coincides with granulite facies metamorphism and potential dehydration. Considering phase relations appropriate for the dunite composition, we deduced the talc forming conditions to be at temperatures of 600-650 °C and at a pressure below 1 GPa. This is supported by oxygen isotope data for talc, anthophyllite and phlogopite in the metasomatic zone, which suggests formation in the temperature range of 600-700 °C from fluids that had a Δ 18O of ~8% and a Δ'17O0.528 of about -40 ppm, i.e., from fluids that could have been derived from the late stage trondhjemite sheet. Objective: To evaluate the frequency and severity of pleuropulmonary alterations in anthophyllite‐exposed former workers in Itapira, São Paulo, Brazil. The amphibole anthophyllite, a magnesium‐iron silicate, had its mining, marketing, and use forbidden in Brazil in 1995. Methods: Former workers were followed from 1999 to 2011. All completed chest X‐ray interpreted using the International Labour Office (ILO) classification. High‐resolution computed tomography was used at the final evaluation. Spirometry assessed forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), and FEV1/FVC throughout the follow‐up period. Samples from the mined ore were analyzed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS). Results: XRD and SEM‐EDS confirmed the presence in ore of anthophyllite at a concentration of 75%, in addition to tremolite and other amphiboles in lower concentrations. Twenty‐eight subjects were evaluated. Median time of exposure was 3 years (minimum = 1; maximum  = 18; interquartile interval = 1‐4). Twenty cases of pleural abnormalities were diagnosed in 26 evaluated (77%). The average latency time was 25.6 ± 7.4 years. Two individuals (7.7%) showed progressive worsening of diffuse pleural thickening (DPT) and exhibited an annual FVC decrease of 85 mL and 150 mL, respectively. Conclusion: This small sample showed a very high index of nonmalignant pleural abnormalities in anthophyllite‐exposed workers compared with workers exposed to other kinds of fibers. Rapidly progressive DPT, defined by the severity of pleural compromise, was possibly secondary to the presence of other amphibole types in the inhaled dust. No significant loss of FVC was found in the studied group as a whole. No cases of asbestosis, lung carcinoma, and mesothelioma were diagnosed in this cohort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the western East European Craton (EEC), southern Lithuania, a suite of fine-grained, thinly bedded rocks of unusual composition has been shown to have originally comprised intermediate and felsic volcanic rocks. They extruded at ca. 1.83 Ga and were hydrothermally altered prior to metamorphism, which converted them into garnet-, gedrite-, anthophyllite-, staurolite- and cordierite-bearing schists. After the rocks have experienced a 630°C and 7 kbar metamorphism, they were uplifted to 15 km (5 kbar) probably at ca. 1.73 Ga. They were reheated to 640°C at ca. 1.50 Ga (monazite age). The monazite age of ca. 1.50 Ga is coeval with the emplacement of the neighboring 1.50 Ga Anorthosite-Mangerite-Charnockite-Granite (AMCG) Mazury complex. The ca. 1.83 Ga volcanic suites in Lithuania and northern Poland, together with the Oskarshamn-Jönköping belt (OJB) in south-central Sweden, may belong to the same chain of volcanic island arcs, and thus provide information on the evolution of the entire western EEC. The ca. 1.50 Ga metamorphic reworking and the replacement of the Mazury AMCG suite may have been triggered by the Danopolonian orogeny further west and, at a larger scale, accretion of the continental margin of Columbia. Rare exposures of orthoamphibole mafic (Oam) gneiss of Mesoproterozoic age in the north-central Appalachians are confined to the northwestern New Jersey Highlands where they form thin lens-shaped bodies composed of gedrite and sparse anthophyllite, oligoclase (An 13 –An 20 ), biotite, magnetite, and local fluorapatite, rutile, and ilmenite. The gneiss is penetratively foliated and has sharp, conformable contacts against enclosing supracrustal paragneiss and marble. Orthoamphibole mafic gneiss is characterized by low SiO 2 (48 ± 2.5 wt%), CaO (1.9 ± 1.3 wt%), and high Al 2 O 3 (18 ± 1.2 wt%), Fe 2 O 3 (10.5 ± 1.6 wt%), and MgO (12 ± 2.3 wt%). Trace element abundances overlap those of unaltered amphibolites in the study area and, coupled with δ 18 O values of 9.45 ± 0.6‰ (VSMOW) from gedrite separates, support an origin from a basalt protolith. The geochemical and isotopic data are consistent with the formation of Oam gneiss through sea floor hydrothermal alteration of basalt at low temperature of 150–200 °C. Mass-balance calculations indicate gains during alteration mainly in MgO and Al 2 O 3 and losses in CaO, Sr, and light rare earth elements. Our results are compatible with the pre-metamorphic alteration of the basalt protoliths through chloritization and plagioclase dissolution that produced a Mg-rich and Ca-poor rock. Subsequent metamorphism of this chlorite-rich rock to the current mineral assemblage of Oam gneiss took place at ca. 1045 Ma, during the Ottawan phase of the Grenvillian Orogeny. The close spatial association in the study area of Oam gneiss bodies and sulfide occurrences suggests an affinity to the style of mineralization associated with volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS)-type deposits. Talc has been used for over a century in a variety of cosmetic products. While pure cosmetic talc (free of asbestos) is not considered a risk factor for mesothelioma, it has been recently suggested that inhalation of cosmetic talc containing trace levels of asbestos is a risk factor for mesothelioma. Bulk analyses of cosmetic talcum products were performed in the 1960s and 1970s, however, the analytical methods used at that time were incapable of determining whether asbestos minerals were present in the asbestiform versus non-asbestiform habit. The distinction between these two mineral habits is critical, as non-asbestiform amphibole minerals do not present an asbestos-related cancer risk via inhalation. As such, we evaluated six historical talcum powders using modern-era analytical methods to determine if asbestos is present, and if so, to identify the mineral habit (asbestiform versus non-asbestiform) of the asbestos. Based on their labels, the products were produced by four manufacturers and sold between 1940 and 1977. The products were analyzed in duplicate by two laboratories using standard protocols. Laboratory A analyzed samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarized light microscopy (PLM), and Laboratory B analyzed samples using PLM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). No asbestiform minerals were found in any of the products. Nonetheless, even if some historical cosmetic talcum products contained trace amounts (≤0.1%) of asbestiform minerals, any resulting asbestos exposure would be expected to be exceedingly low, and comparable to exposures from breathing ambient air. The paper presents data on the thermochemical study (high-temperature melt calorimetry in a Tian-Calvet microcalorometer) of two natural Mg-Fe amphiboles: anthophyllite Mg(MgFe )[SiO](OH) from Kukh-i-Lal, southwestern Pamirs, Tajikistan, and gedrite NaMg(MgFe Al)[SiAlO](OH) from the Kola Peninsula, Russia. The enthalpy of formation from elements is obtained as-12021 ± 20 kJ/mol for anthophyllite and as-11545 ± 12 kJ/mol for gedrite. The recently discovered Palokas gold deposit is part of the larger Rompas-Rajapalot gold-mineralized system located in the Paleoproterozoic Peräpohja Belt, northern Finland. Tourmaline is an important gangue mineral in the Palokas gold mineralization. It occurs as tourmalinite veins and as tourmaline crystals in sulfide-rich metasomatized gold-bearing rocks. In order to understand the origin of tourmaline in the gold-mineralized rocks, we have investigated the major element chemistry and boron isotope composition of tourmaline from three areas: (1) the Palokas gold mineralization, (2) a pegmatitic tourmaline granite, and (3) the evaporitic Petäjäskoski Formation. Based on textural evidence, tourmaline in gold mineralization is divided into two different types. Type 1 is located within the host rock and is cut by rock-forming anthophyllite crystals. Type 2 occurs in late veins and/or breccia zones consisting of approximately 80% tourmaline and 20% sulfides, commonly adjacent to quartz veins. All the studied tourmaline samples belong to the alkali-group tourmaline and can be classified as dravite and schorl. The δB values of the three localities lie in the same range, from 0 to −4‰. Tourmaline from the Au mineralization and from the Petäjäskoski Formation has similar compositional trends. Mg is the major substituent for Al; inferred low Fe/Fe ratios and Na values (<0.8 atoms per formula unit (apfu)) of all tourmaline samples suggest that they precipitated from reduced, low-salinity fluids. Based on the similar chemical and boron isotope composition and the Re-Os age of molybdenite related to the tourmaline-sulfide-quartz veins, we propose that the tourmaline-forming process is a result of a single magmatic-hydrothermal event related to the extensive granite magmatism at around 1.79-1.77 Ga. Tourmaline was crystallized throughout the hydrothermal process, which resulted in the paragenetic variation between type 1 and type 2. Anthophyllite is an amphibole form of asbestos historically used in only a limited number of products. No published resource currently exists that offers a complete overview of anthophyllite toxicity or of its effects on exposed human populations. We performed a review focusing on how anthophyllite toxicity was understood over time by conducting a comprehensive search of publicly available documents that discussed the use, mining, properties, toxicity, exposure and potential health effects of anthophyllite. Over 200 documents were identified; 114 contained relevant and useful information which we present chronologically in this assessment. Our analysis confirms that anthophyllite toxicity has not been well studied compared to other asbestos types. We found that toxicology studies in animals from the 1970s onward have indicated that, at sufficient doses, anthophyllite can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Studies of Finnish anthophyllite miners, conducted in the 1970s, found an increased incidence of asbestosis and lung cancer, but not mesothelioma. Not until the mid-1990s was an epidemiological link with mesothelioma in humans observed. Its presence in talc has been of recent significance in relation to potential asbestos exposure through the use of talc-containing products. Characterizing the health risks of anthophyllite is difficult, and distinguishing between its asbestiform and non-asbestiform mineral form is essential from both a toxicological and regulatory perspective. Anthophyllite toxicity has generally been assumed to be similar to other amphiboles from a regulatory standpoint, but some notable exceptions exist. The six commercial asbestos minerals (chrysotile, fibrous actinolite, crocidolite, amosite, fibrous tremolite, and fibrous anthophyllite) are classified by the IARC as carcinogenic to humans. There are currently several lines of research dealing with the inertisation of asbestos minerals among which the dry grinding process has received considerable interest. The effects of dry grinding on tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos in eccentric vibration mills have not yet been investigated. Along the research line of the mechanical treatment of asbestos, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dry grinding in eccentric vibration mills on the structure, temperature stability, and fibre dimensions of tremolite asbestos from Val d’Ala, (Italy) and UICC standard anthophyllite asbestos from Paakkila mine (Finland) by varying the grinding time (30 s, 5 min, and 10 min). After grinding for 30 s to 10 min, tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos showed a decrease in dehydroxylation and breakdown temperatures due to the increase in lattice strain and the decrease in crystallinity. Moreover, after grinding up to 10 min, tremolite and anthophyllite fibres were all below the limits defining a countable fibre according to WHO.

Both occupational and environmental exposure to asbestos-mineral fibres can be associated with lung diseases. The pathogenic effects are related to the dimension, biopersistence and chemical composition of the fibres. In addition to the major mineral elements, mineral fibres contain trace elements and their content may play a role in fibre toxicity. To shed light on the role of trace elements in asbestos carcinogenesis, knowledge on their concentration in asbestos-mineral fibres is mandatory. It is possible that trace elements play a synergetic factor in the pathogenesis of diseases caused by the inhalation of mineral fibres. In this paper, the concentration levels of trace elements from three chrysotile samples, four amphibole asbestos samples (UICC amosite, UICC anthophyllite, UICC crocidolite and tremolite) and fibrous erionite from Jersey, Nevada (USA) were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). For all samples, the following trace elements were measured: Li, Be, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Pb, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Th, U. Their distribution in the various mineral species is thoroughly discussed. The obtained results indicate that the amount of trace metals such as Mn, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn is higher in anthophyllite and chrysotile samples, whereas the amount of rare earth elements (REE) is higher in erionite and tremolite samples. The results of this work can be useful to the pathologists and biochemists who use asbestos minerals and fibrous erionite in-vitro studies as positive cyto- and geno-toxic standard references. The Songshugou ultramafic massif is located in the eastern segment of the Qinling orogenic belt, central China. It is a large spinel peridotite body dominated by coarse-grained, porphyroclastic, and fine-grained dunite with minor harzburgite, olivine clinopyroxenite, and banded/podiform chromitite. The compositions of the bulk-rock dunite and harzburgite, and the constituent olivine and spinel, together with the textures and chemical characteristics of multiphase mineral inclusions, point to the highly refractory nature of these rocks with complex histories of high-temperature boninite melt generation and boninitic melt–rock reaction, probably in a young, warm, and volatile-rich forearc lithospheric mantle setting. Additionally, a subsequent low-temperature fluid–rock reaction is also recorded by TiO 2 -rich spinel with Ti solubility/mobility enhanced by chloride- or fluoride-rich subduction-zone fluids as advocated by Rapp et al. (2010). The olivine clinopyroxenite, on the other hand, was likely crystallized from a residual boninitic melt that had reacted with harzburgitic residues. The ubiquitous occurrences of hydrous minerals, such as anthophyllite, tremolite, Cr-chlorite, and serpentine (stable at lower P–T crustal conditions) in the matrix, suggest that further low-temperature fluid–rock reaction (or retrograde metamorphism) has affected the original volatile-poor peridotites either in a mature and cool subduction zone, or in a continental crust during their exhumation into the Qinling collisional orogeny at early Paleozoic era, or both. The prolonged and intense ductile/brittle deformation can decrease the mineral grain size through dynamic recrystallization and fracturing, and thus aid the fluid–rock reaction or retrograde metamorphism and mineral chemical re-equilibration processes. Therefore, the Songshugou peridotites present a good example for understanding the petrogenesis and evolution of the mantle wedge, with the emphasis on the complex partial melting and melt/fluid–rock interactions in the forearc setting. The oxygen (δO) and hydrogen (δD) isotopic composition of HO-bearing minerals was studied for the ore-bearing amphibole metaultramafic rocks, which are the products of the early regional (435 ± 44 Ma) and late local (260 ± 6 Ma) silicic metasomatose in the Sysert metamorphic complex. The gold-sulfide mineralization of the Karas'evogorskoe deposit and anthophyllite-asbestos bodies of the Tersut deposit are related to the regional and local metasomatose combined with plagiogranitization and potassium granitization, respectively. The HO-bearing minerals of metasomatites (anthophyllite, tremolite, talc) of the Karas'evogorskoe and Tersut deposits are characterized by heavier δO (9.8 to 12.2 and 7.6 to 9.4‰, respectively) and lighter ·D (87 to −91 and −56 to −67‰, respectively) values. The calculated isotopic composition of the fluid in equilibrium with these minerals indicates a heterogeneous source of water for the fluids related to the formation of metasomatites and the metamorphic origin of fluids. During the regional metasomatose, this fluid was a result of equilibrium of the deep fluid with volcanosedimentary rocks enriched in the heavy oxygen isotope. The effect of pH on the kinetics of tremolite and anthophyllite dissolution was investigated at 25 °C in batch reactors over the pH range of 1–13.5, in inorganic buffered solutions. Dissolution rates were obtained based on the release of Si and Mg. Results obtained in this study show different behaviors for both minerals. For tremolite, dissolution rates show a noticeable dependence on pH between 1 and 8, decreasing as pH increases and reaching a minimum around neutral conditions. At basic pH this dependence becomes even stronger, but dissolution takes place together with collateral effects of saturation and carbonation. A preferential release of Ca and Mg is observed in acid media, lowering the Mg/Si ratio to the extent that Mg solubility decreases with pH. For anthophyllite, dissolution rates also show a strong dependence on pH, between 1 and 9.5. At the same pH, anthophyllite dissolves up to 8 times faster than tremolite. For pH > 9.5 this dependence is smooth, and it is probably associated with effects of saturation and carbonation. Dissolution is also non-stoichiometric with a faster release of Mg with respect to Si in acid media. SEM observations show differences in the breakage mechanism of the fibers. The anthophyllite particle breakage during dissolution consists of the splitting of bundle fibers parallel to the fiber longitudinal direction. Background The United States is second only to the People's Republic of China in annual talc production . U.S. talc is used in the production of ceramics, paint, paper, plastics, roofing, rubber, cosmetics, flooring, caulking, and agricultural applications. A number of U.S. talc deposits consistently contain talc intergrown with amphiboles such as tremolite and/or anthophyllite. It has long been recognized that miners and millers of talc deposits are at risk for pneumoconiosis and it has recently been reported that it is prudent, on the balance of probabilities, to conclude that dusts from New York State talc ores are capable of causing mesothelioma in exposed workers. This is a report of the diagnosis of pneumoconiosis and mesothelioma in a husband and wife who operated a small metal casting business that used industrial talc from New York as a parting agent. Methods Case reports, including medical records and exposure histories, were provided by an attorney who had also commissioned laboratory investigation of the industrial talc product used in the factory. Results Mrs X was diagnosed with pneumoconiosis characterized by interstitial fibrosis and heavily calcified pleural plaques. Mr X had calcified pleural plaques and developed a fatal pleural mesothelioma. Samples of the industrial talc contained fibrous tremolite and anthophyllite. Conclusions The author concludes that end users of industrial talc from New York State may be at risk of pneumoconiosis and malignant disease. End users of talcs from other regions of the United States, where talc formation arose from processes driven by regional metamorphism, might also be at risk. Am. J. Ind. The Land's End and Tregonning-Godolphin granites of the >250 km-long Permian Cornubian Batholith are heterogeneous medium- to coarse-grained peraluminous biotite-, tourmaline-, and lithium-mica granites traditionally thought to be emplaced as massive magmatic diapirs. Although S-type characteristics are dominant (quartz + biotite + muscovite + tourmaline ± topaz ± lithium-micas in the melt, numerous greisen and pegmatite veins, Sn-W mineralization), some characteristics of evolved I-type granites are also exhibited (hornblende-bearing enclaves, elevated Nd, Cu mineralization, batholithic dimensions). Here, we present an investigation focusing on the contact metamorphism and deformation of the aureole rocks adjacent to the Land's End and Tregonning granites as an approach to better determine the method of granite emplacement and the depth at which it occurred. New 1:5000- scale geological maps are presented for ~15 km of coastal exposure of the granites and their aureoles. We propose that the granites were emplaced non-diapirically by intrusion of sills that amalgamated to form a sheeted laccolith-type body. Granite contacts cleanly truncate all faults, folds, and cleavages generated during both Variscan convergence and subsequent latest Carboniferous-Early Permian (end-Variscan) extension, and it is likely that granite was emplaced during continuation of this extensional episode. There is evidence for stoping of the country rocks by an outward-migrated sill and dyke network, and uplift and doming of the host rocks can be partially attributed to laccolith inflation. Host meta-siltstones of the Devonian Mylor Slate Formation formed a contact aureole of cordierite + biotite + chlorite ± andalusite "spotted slates." Several interspersed pillow basalts and dolerites, previously affected by hydrothermal alteration, underwent isochemical contact metamorphism to form cordierite- and orthoamphibole-bearing hornfels, including cordierite-anthophyllite rocks that are present in Kenidjack cliff, NW Land's End aureole. THERMOCALC P-T modeling and pseudosection construction for these rocks in the large Na2O-CaOK 2O-FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O-TiO2-Fe2O3 (NCKFMASHTO) chemical system indicates contact metamorphism occurred at 1.5 ± 1.0 kbar and 615 ± 50 °C. This ultra-low pressure metamorphism equates to a likely emplacement depth of 5-6 km for the adjacent granite sheets. The Cornubian Batholith is highly composite and likely comprises an amalgamation of discrete shallow-seated sheeted laccoliths that are dyke-fed from a common lower-crustal/upper-mantle melt region to result in the batholith's mixed S-type/I-type character. Background There is controversy about the potential for dust from the talc mines and mills of New York State to cause mesothelioma. Honda et al. published a study of mortality among New York talc workers and concluded that it was unlikely that the two deaths from mesothelioma were caused by talc ore dust. However, fibers of tremolite and anthophyllite have been found in the lungs of talc workers and Hull concluded that 'New York talc exposure is associated with mesothelioma, and deserves further public health attention.' Methods Data concerning additional cases of mesothelioma in the cohort have been posted by NIOSH. I used information from the NIOSH website and the Honda report to analyze the incidence of mesothelioma during the years 1990-2007. Results There were at least five new cases of mesothelioma in the cohort and mesothelioma incidence rates were at least five (1.6-11.7) times the rate in the general population ( P < 0.01). Conclusions I conclude that: (1) mesothelioma has been diagnosed among members of the cohort at a rate in excess of that in the general population; (2) fibers of tremolite and anthophyllite have been detected in dust and the lungs of talc workers; and (3) these fibers are known causes of mesothelioma. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of a sample of natural gedrite from North Carolina, USA, with the crystal-chemical formula ANa0.47B(Na0.03Mg0.97Fe2+0.94Mn0.02Ca0.04)C(Mg3.52Fe2+0.28Al1.15Ti4+0.05)T(Si6.31Al1.69)O22W(OH)2, up to a maximum pressure of 7 GPa, revealed the following bulk and axial moduli and their pressure derivatives: K0T= 91.2(6) GPa [K0T' = 6.3(2)]; K0T(a) = 60.5(6) GPa [K0T(a)' = 6.1(2)]; K0T(b) = 122.8(2.6) GPa [K0T(b)' = 5.7(8)]; K0T(c) = 119.7(1.5) GPa [K0T(c)' = 5.1(5)]. Gedrite has a much higher bulk modulus than anthophyllite (66 GPa) and proto-amphibole (64 GPa). All of the three axial moduli of gedrite are higher than those of these two other orthoamphiboles. The greater stiffness of gedrite along [100] is due to its high ANa content, which is almost zero in anthophyllite and proto-amphibole. The much greater stiffness parallel to the (100) plane of gedrite compared with the two other amphiboles is probably due to its high CAl content. A comparison is made with published data available for orthorhombic B(Mg, Mn, Fe) and monoclinic BCa amphiboles to identify correlations between crystal-chemistry and compressibility in amphiboles. The Hongtoushan Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide Deposit (VMSD) occurs in the Hunbei granite-greenstone terrane, Liaoning Province, NE China. Rocks in the mining area have been metamorphosed around 3.0-2.8 Ga to upper amphibolite facies at temperatures between 600°C and 650°C. Cordierite-anthophyllite gneiss (CAG) in the Hongtoushan mining area, which occurs hundreds of meters below the ore horizon, corresponds to the metamorphosed semi-conformable alteration zone of the VMSD hydrothermal system, whereas the one immediately below the main ore layer represents the metamorphosed pipe-like alteration zone. Whole-rock oxygen isotope signatures were well preserved in both types of CAGs, although the mineral components have been entirely changed during regional metamorphism. Therefore, whole-rock oxygen isotopes can be used to estimate the formation temperature of both types of alteration zone. Calculations show that the semi-conformable and pipelike alteration zones for the Hongtoushan submarine hydrothermal system were formed at 290-360°C and 285-320°C, respectively, whereas estimates for the former were slightly higher than that of the latter, indicating that the semi-conformable alteration zone represents the deep part of the Hongtoushan seafloor hydrothermal system, while the pipe-like alteration zone represents the discharge conduits for metal-rich fluids, which is closer to the seafloor. Anthophyllite or another species of Mg-amphibole commonly occurs in an intervening zone between the higher grade orthopyroxene zone and lower grade talc zone in progressively metamorphosed peridotites. However, the anthophyllite zone is absent in some of the thermally metamorphosed peridotite complexes in SW Japan despite the existence of the other zones. A comparative study presented here reveals similarities in rock composition and metamorphic pressure-temperature conditions at high-grade zones between the metaperidotite complexes, and differences in the following respects. The metaperidotite complex that contains an anthophyllite zone has less abundant magnetite and olivine that is more homogeneous than the complex where the anthophyllite zone is absent. It is likely that the degree of cation diffusion in olivine crystals depends on duration of heat retention in metaperidotites during thermal metamorphism, which is supported by the variation in mineralogy of intrusive rocks and pelitic hornfelses surrounding the metaperidotites, and by calculations based on a simplified model of thermal conduction. The long duration of heat retention looks to be a necessary condition for the formation of anthophyllite crystals, which have a sluggish nucleation rate. In addition, the circulation of reducing fluids during prolonged metamorphism likely promoted the decomposition of magnetite and the growth of anthophyllite, into which iron is preferentially distributed. The thermoelastic behaviour of anthophyllite has been determined for a natural crystal with crystal-chemical formula Na(MgMnCaNa) (MgFeAl) (Si)O(OH) using single-crystal X-ray diffraction to 973 K. The best model for fitting the thermal expansion data is that of Berman (J Petrol 29:445-522, ) in which the coefficient of volume thermal expansion varies linearly with T as α = a + 2 a ( T − T): α = a = 3.40(6) × 10 K, a = 5.1(1.0) × 10 K. The corresponding axial thermal expansion coefficients for this linear model are: α, = 1.21(2) × 10 K, a = 5.2(4) × 10 K; α, = 9.2(1) × 10 K, a = 7(2) × 10 K. α, = 1.26(3) × 10 K, a = 1.3(6) × 10 K. The thermoelastic behaviour of anthophyllite differs from that of most monoclinic ( C2/ m) amphiboles: (a) the ε − ε plane of the unit-strain ellipsoid, which is normal to b in anthophyllite but usually at a high angle to c in monoclinic amphiboles; (b) the strain components are ε ≫ ε > ε in anthophyllite, but ε ~ ε ≫ ε in monoclinic amphiboles. The strain behaviour of anthophyllite is similar to that of synthetic C2/ mNa (LiMg) MgSi O(OH), suggesting that high contents of small cations at the B-site may be primarily responsible for the much higher thermal expansion ⊥(100). Refined values for site-scattering at M4 decrease from 31.64 epfu at 298 K to 30.81 epfu at 973 K, which couples with similar increases of those of M1 and M2 sites. These changes in site scattering are interpreted in terms of Mn ↔ Mg exchange involving M1,2 ↔ M4, which was first detected at 673 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high-pressure behavior of a natural Mg-rich anthophyllite (space group Pnma) from Talcville, New York, U.S.A., with empirical formula ANa0.04B(Mg1.30 Mn0.57Ca0.09Na0.04) C(Mg4.96Fe0.02Al0.02) T(Si7.99Al0.01)O22 W(OH)2 has been studied to 7 GPa. Bulk and axial moduli determined by fitting a third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation-of-state to lattice parameters are: KT0 = 66(2) GPa, K' = 11(1), KT0 (a) = 41(3) GPa, K'(a) = 11(2), KT0 (b) = 97(5) GPa, K'(b) = 6(2), KT0(c) = 83(7) GPa, and K'(c) = 12(4). Structure refinements were also obtained at 0.0001, 1.98(2), 4.57(2), and 6.13(4) GPa. A comparison with the recent study of Fe-rich proto-amphibole, space group Pnmn, by Zanazzi et al. (2010) allows the effects of symmetry and composition upon high-P behavior of amphibole to be evaluated. The effects of composition have been identified and the central role of the ribbon of M1,2,3 octahedra in the compression of amphibole is discussed. The only significant differences between the elastic properties of anthophyllite and proto-amphibole are the greater stiffness of anthophyllite along [100] and the much higher-pressure derivatives K'(b) and K'(c) of anthophyllite. It is proposed that a high Mg content of the M1,2,3 ribbon stiffens the amphibole structure considerably on compression, compared with an Fe-rich ribbon. The amphibole asbestos, anthophyllite, is associated with asbestos-related disease in humans, along with mesothelioma in animal models. In humans, however, there are only three cases of histologically proven malignant mesothelioma of the pleura associated with anthophyllite that have been documented in the English-language literature. A fourth case is presented in a man who lived in South Africa and had anthophyllite in his lung. Anthophyllite was never commercially mined in South Africa. Using scanning electron microscopy, his lung fibre burden was calculated to be 358 000 fibres and 31 000 asbestos bodies per gram of dry weight of lung tissue. The mean aspect ratio of the anthophyllite fibres in the lung was 41.2 (SD = 28.8). No other types of asbestos were detected in the lung. His exposure was almost certainly occupational. Abstract  The photoluminescence (PL) spectra, optical excitation spectra and PL decay curves of anthophyllite from Canada were obtained at 300 and 10 K. The MnO content in the sample, determined using an electron probe microanalyzer, was high at 5.77 wt%. In the PL spectra obtained under 410-nm excitation, bright red bands with peaks at 651 and 659 nm were observed at 300 and 10 K, respectively. The origin of the red luminescence was ascribed to Mn2 in anthophyllite from the analysis of the excitation spectra and PL decay times of 6.1–6.6 ms. In the PL spectra obtained under 240-nm excitation at 300 K, a small violet band with a peak at 398 nm was observed. On the violet band at 10 K, a vibronic structure was observed. Cordierite–orthoamphibole gneisses and rocks of similar composition commonly contain low-variance mineral assemblages that can provide useful information about the metamorphic evolution of a terrane. New calculated petrogenetic grids and pseudosections are presented in the FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O (FMASH), Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O (NCKFMASH) and Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–Fe2O3 (NCKFMASHTO) chemical systems to investigate quantitatively the phase relations in these rocks. Although the bulk compositions of cordierite–orthoamphibole gneisses are close to FMASH, calculations in this system do not adequately account for the observed range of mineral assemblages. Calculations in NCKFMASH and NCKFMASHTO highlight the role of minor constituents such as Ca, Na and Fe3+ in the mineral assemblage evolution of such rocks and these systems are more appropriate for interpreting the evolution of natural examples.
